Background: Although the level of medical care has been improved in recent years, the probability of patients contracting pathogens has increased greatly, with a rising incidence of invasive fungal infections. Deep-seated fungi have become common pathogens of nosocomial infections. Objective: This study aims to systematically assess the effectiveness, mortality, survival rate, and adverse reactions (ARs) of high-dose (HD) liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB) for human diseases. Methods: Ten articles (1661 patients) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs; whether randomized, single-blind, or double-blind) from January 1, 1960, to December 31, 2020, of HD-L-AMB treatment of diseases were retrieved from the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases. The primary outcome measure was the overall therapeutic effect, and the secondary outcome measures were mortality, ≥10-week survival, and ARs. Data were meta-analyzed using RevMan 5.3. Results: Ten RCTs involving 1661 patients were included. HD-L-AMB did not show a significant therapeutic advantage in anti-infection treatment. In addition, HD-L-AMB treatment of invasive Aspergillus infection led to high mortality and low survival (≥10 weeks, OR = 0.57, 95%CI 0.34-0.94, P = .03). According to subgroup analysis, the incidence of ARs and the incidence of renal dysfunction associated with invasive fungal infection treatment were higher with HD-L-AMB than with regular-dose L-AMB. Conclusion: HD-L-AMB had no obvious advantage for the treatment of diseases and was accompanied by increased mortality, reduced long-term survival, and increased ARs (including renal insufficiency). Therefore, the use of HD-L-AMB to control infections is recommended with caution only when the preferred treatment is contraindicated.

Swietenia macrophylla King, belongs to the Meliaceae family, is a valuable medicinal plant and its fruits have been processed commercially to a variety of health foods. The seeds have long been known for their ethnomedicinal significance against these diseases. Swietenine (Swi) was isolated from S. macrophylla and could ameliorate inflammation and oxidative stress. In this study, HepG2 cells induced by H2 O2 were used to construct oxidative stress model in vitro. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of Swi on H2 O2 induced oxidative injury in HepG2 cells and its molecular mechanism, and to explore the effect of Swi on liver injury in db/db mice and its possible mechanism. The results showed that Swi significantly inhibited HepG2 cells viability and reduced oxidative damage in a dose-dependent manner as evidenced by a range of biochemical analysis and immunoblotting study. Moreover, it induced the protein and mRNA expression of HO-1 together with its upstream mediator Nrf2 and activated the phosphorylation of AKT in HepG2 cells. LY294002, a PI3K/AKT inhibitor, significantly suppressed the Nrf2 nuclear translocation and HO-1 expression in H2 O2 induced HepG2 cells treated with Swi. In addition, RNA interference with Nrf2 significantly reduced the expression level of Nrf2 and HO-1 in the nucleus. Swi has a significant protective effect on cell damage in H2 O2 induced HepG2 cells by increasing the antioxidant capacity which is achieved through the AKT/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Additionally, in vivo, Swi could protect the liver of type 2 diabetic mice by improving lipid deposition in liver tissue and inhibiting oxidative stress. These findings indicated that Swi can be a promising dietary agent to improve type 2 diabetes.

Importance: Acupoint hot compress during the early postpartum period may benefit patients after a vaginal delivery, but the evidence of this effect is limited. Objective: To assess whether acupoint hot compress involving the abdominal, lumbosacral, and plantar regions could reduce the incidence of postpartum urinary retention, relieve postpartum uterine contraction pain, prevent emotional disorders, and promote lactation. Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter randomized clinical trial was conducted at 12 hospitals in China. Pregnant patients were screened for eligibility (n = 13 949) and enrolled after vaginal delivery (n = 1200) between January 17 and August 15, 2021; data collection was completed on August 18, 2021. After vaginal delivery, these participants were randomized 1:1 to either the intervention group or control group. Statistical analysis was based on per-protocol population. Interventions: Participants in the control group received routine postpartum care. Participants in the intervention group received routine postpartum care plus 3 sessions of a 4-hour acupoint hot compress involving the abdominal, lumbosacral, and plantar regions within 30 minutes, 24 hours, and 48 hours after delivery. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was the incidence of postpartum urinary retention, defined as the first urination occurring more than 6.5 hours after delivery and/or use of an indwelling catheter within 72 hours after delivery. The secondary outcomes were postpartum uterine contraction pain intensity (assessed with the visual analog scale [VAS]), depressive symptoms (assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale), and lactation conditions (including lactation initiation time, breastfeeding milk volume, feeding mood and times, and newborn weight). Results: Of the 1200 participants randomized, 1085 completed the study (537 in the intervention group and 548 in the control group, with a median [IQR] age of 26.0 [24.0-29.0] years). Participants in the intervention group compared with the control group had significantly decreased incidence of postpartum urinary retention (relative risk [RR], 0.58; 95% CI, 0.35-0.98; P = .03); improved postpartum uterine contraction pain when measured at 6.5 hours (median [IQR] VAS score, 1 [1-2] vs 2 [1-2]; P < .001), 28.5 hours (median [IQR] VAS score, 1 [0-1] vs 1 [1-2]; P < .001), 52.5 hours (median [IQR] VAS score, 1 [0-1] vs 1 [0-1]; P < .001), and 76.5 hours (median [IQR] VAS score, 0 [0-1] vs 0 [0-1]; P = .01) after delivery; reduced depressive symptoms (RR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.54-0.98; P = .01); and increased breastfeeding milk volume measured at 28.5, 52.5, and 76.5 hours after delivery. No adverse events occurred in either of the 2 groups. Conclusions and Relevance: Results of this trial showed that acupoint hot compress after vaginal delivery decreased postpartum urinary retention, uterine contraction pain, and depressive symptoms and increased breastfeeding milk volume. Acupoint hot compress may be considered as an adjunctive intervention in postnatal care that meets patient self-care needs. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture (IDSA), simple combination therapy (SCT), and traditional scalp acupuncture (TSA) on motor function and gait of the lower limbs in post-stroke hemiplegia patients. METHODS: A total of 231 patients with post-stroke hemiplegia was randomly divided into IDSA (78 cases), SCT (78 cases), and TSA (75 cases) groups by a random number table. Scalp acupuncture (SA) and lower-limb robot training (LLRT) were both performed in the IDSA and SCT groups. The patients in the TSA group underwent SA and did not receive LLRT. The treatment was administered once daily and 6 times weekly for 8 continuous weeks, each session lasted for 30 min. The primary outcome measures included Fugl-Meyer assessment of the lower extremity (FMA-LE), berg balance scale (BBS), modified barthel index (MBI), and 6-min walking test (6MWT). The secondary outcome measures included stride frequency (SF), stride length (SL), stride width (SW), affected side foot angle (ASFA), passive range of motion (PROM) of the affected hip (PROM-H), knee (PROM-K) and ankle (PROM-A) joints. The patients were evaluated before treatment, at 1- and 2-month treatment, and 1-, and 2-month follow-up visits, respectively. Adverse events during 2-month treatment were observed. RESULTS: Nineteen patients withdrew from the trial, with 8 in the IDSA and 5 in the SCT groups, 6 in the TSA group. The FMA-LE, BBS, 6MWT and MBI scores in the IDSA group were significantly increased after 8-week treatment and 2 follow-up visits compared with the SCT and TSA groups (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Compared with pre-treatment, the grade distribution of BBS and MBI scores in the 3 groups were significantly improved at 1, 2-month treatment and 2 follow-up visits (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The SF, PROM-H, PROM-K and PROM-A in the IDSA group was significantly increased compared with the SCT and TSA groups after 8-week of treatment (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Compared with the SCT group, ASFA of the IDSA group was significantly reduced after 8-week of treatment (P<0.05). SF, SL, PROM-K and PROM-A were significantly increased at the 2nd follow-up visit whereas the ASFA was significantly reduced in the IDSA group compared with the SCT groups at 1st follow-up visit (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The SF was significantly increased in the SCT group compared with the TSA group after 8-week treatment (P<0.05). Compared with the TSA group, PROM-K, PROM-A were significantly increased at the 2nd follow-up visit (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The effects of IDSA on lower-limb motor function and walking ability of post-stroke patients were superior to SCT and TSA. The SCT was comparable to TSA treatment, and appeared to be superior in improving the motion range of the lower extremities. (Registration No. ChiCTR1900027206).

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effects of interactive dynamic scalp acupuncture (IDSA), simple combination therapy (SCT), and traditional scalp acupuncture (TSA) on cognitive function, depression and anxiety in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment. METHODS: A total of 660 patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment who were admitted to 3 hospitals in Shenzhen City between May 2017 and May 2020 were recruited and randomly assigned to the IDSA (218 cases), SCT (222 cases) and TSA groups (220 cases) according to a random number table. All the patients received conventional drug therapy for cerebral stroke and exercise rehabilitation training. Scalp acupuncture and computer-based cognitive training (CBCT) were performed simultaneously in the IDSA group, but separately in the morning and in the afternoon in the SCT group. The patients in the TSA group underwent scalp acupuncture only. The course of treatment was 8 weeks. Before treatment (M0), 1 (M1) and 2 months (M2) after treatment, as well as follow-up at 1 (M3) and 2 months (M4), the cognitive function of patients was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA) Scales; depression, anxiety, sleep quality, and self-care ability of patients were assessed using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Modified Barthel Index (MBI), respectively. During this trial, all adverse events (AEs) were accurately recorded. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the MMSE, MoCA, HAMD, HAMA, PSQI, and MBI scores among the 3 groups at M0 (all P>0.05). In the IDSA group, the MMSE, MoCA and MBI scores from M2 to M4 were significantly higher than those in the SCT and TSA groups, while the HAMD, HAMA and PSQI scores were significantly reduced (all P<0.01). The changes of all above scores (M2-M0, M4-M0) were significantly superior to those in the SCT and TSA groups (all P<0.01, except M4-M0 of HAMD). At M2, the severity of MMSE, HAMD, HAMA, PSQI and MBI in the IDSA group was significantly lower than that in the SCT and TSA groups (all P<0.01). There was no serious AE during this trial. CONCLUSIONS: IDSA can not only significantly improve cognitive function, but also reduce depression, anxiety, which finally improves the patient's self-care ability. The effect of IDSA was significantly better than SCT and TSA. (Trial registration No. ChiCTR1900027206).

Hypericum patulum has been used as a folk medicine for its varied therapeutic effects including antifungal, wound-healing, spasmolytic, stimulant, hypotensive activities. The water decoction is drank as tea could treat cold, infantile malnutrition. The present study aims to isolate the constituents of the plant and investigate their effects on the glucose consumption in insulin-resistant HepG2 cells, furthermore, lipid metabolism in oleic acid (OA)-treated HepG2 cells was also studied. The phytochemical investigation of the plant led to the isolation of eleven compounds, and their structures were identified by spectroscopic analysis as n-dotriacontanol (1), shikimic acid (2), 1-O-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (3), 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (4), 5-O-coumaroylquinic acid methyl ester (5), 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid butyl ester (6), quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnoside (7), quercetin (8), quercetin-3-O-(4×´-methoxy)-α-L-rahmnopyranosyl (9), hyperoside (10), and rutin (11). The results revealed that compounds 7, 9, and 10 could enhance glucose consumption significantly in hyperglycemia induced HepG2 cells and insulin-resistant HepG2 cells. In addition, the western blotting analysis result exhibited that compounds 7, 9, and 10 in high concentration (5 µM, H) group could dramatically upregulate the expression of PPARγ protein, and even the effect of them had no significant difference compared with that of rosiglitazone. Furthermore, compounds 9 and 10 in middle concentration (2.5 µM, M) group and H group could dramatically promote triglyceride metabolism and decrease TG content in OA-treated HepG2 cells, and even in H group, reactive oxygen species (ROS) level were significantly decreased compared with model group. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Hypericum patulum is a well-known plant of the genera Hypericum for its varied preventive and therapeutic potential activities. To study the chemical constituents and their effects on glucose and lipid metabolism in vitro, we detected glucose consumption in insulin-resistant HepG2 cells, triglyceride content and reactive oxygen species level in OA-treated HepG2 cells. In addition, PPARγ protein was also detected by western blotting analysis in the study. Compounds 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11 were isolated from the plant for the first time. Quercetin-3-O-(4"-methoxy)-α-L-rahmnopyranosyl (9) and hyperoside (10) had potential therapeutic benefit against glucose and lipid metabolic disease. Therefore, this study might have certain guiding significance for further research and development of H. patulum.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of interactive scalp acupuncture, scalp acupuncture alone and scalp acupuncture plus cognitive training for cognitive dysfunction after stroke. METHODS: A total of 660 patients with cognitive dysfunction after stroke were randomly divided into an interactive scalp acupuncture group (218 cases, 18 cases dropped off), a scalp acupuncture group (220 cases, 20 cases dropped off) and a scalp acupuncture plus cognitive training group (222 cases, 22 cases dropped off). All the patients were treated with routine medication and exercise rehabilitation training. The interactive scalp acupuncture group was treated with scalp acupuncture on the parietal midline, and contralateral anterior parietal temporal oblique line and posterior parietal temporal oblique line at the same time of cognitive training; the scalp acupuncture group was treated with scalp acupuncture alone, and the scalp acupuncture plus cognitive training group was treated with scalp acupuncture and cognitive training in the morning and afternoon respectively. All the treatments were given once a day, 6 times a week for 8 weeks. Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) scale score was used to evaluate the cognitive function before treatment, 4 weeks and 8 weeks into treatment. RESULTS: Compared before treatment, the total score of MoCA was increased after 4-week treatment and 8-week treatment in the three groups (P<0.01), and the score in the interactive scalp acupuncture group was higher than that in the scalp acupuncture group and the scalp acupuncture plus cognitive training group (P<0.05, P<0.01). Compared before treatment, each item score of MoCA was increased after 8-week treatment in the three groups (P<0.01), and the score in the interactive scalp acupuncture group was higher than that in the scalp acupuncture group and the scalp acupuncture plus cognitive training group (P<0.01). Except for the attention, the remaining items scores of MoCA in the scalp acupuncture plus cognitive training group were higher than those in the scalp acupuncture group (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The interactive scalp acupuncture could significantly improve the cognitive function in patients with cognitive dysfunction after stroke, and the efficacy is superior to scalp acupuncture alone and scalp acupuncture plus cognitive training.

Nonconvulsive electrotherapy (NET) defined as electrical brain stimulation administered like standard electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), but below seizure threshold, could be effective for patients with treatment-refractory depression (TRD) with fewer adverse neurocognitive outcomes. However, there is a lack of studies in Chinese patients with TRD. Thus, this study was conducted to examine the efficacy and safety of adjunctive NET for Chinese patients with TRD. Twenty TRD patients were enrolled and underwent six NET treatments. Depressive symptoms, response, and remission were assessed with the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) at baseline and after 1, 3, and 6 NET treatments. Neurocognitive function was assessed by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) at baseline and after the completion of six NET treatments. Mean HAMD-17 scores declined significantly from 26.2 to 10.4 (p < 0.001) after post-NET. The rates of response and remission were 60.0% (95% CI: 36.5-83.5) and 10.0% (95% CI: 0-24.4), respectively. Neurocognitive performance improved following a course of NET. No significant association was found between changes in depressive symptoms and baseline neurocognitive function. Adjunctive NET appeared to be effective for patients with TRD, without adverse neurocognitive effects. Randomized controlled studies were warranted to confirm these findings.

OBJECTIVE: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression and in the antidepressant response. This study examined whether changes in serum BDNF levels are associated with the antidepressant effects of nonconvulsive electrotherapy (NET). METHODS: For BDNF analyses, serum samples were collected from 20 patients with treatment-refractory depression (TRD) and from 20 healthy controls. Serum samples were also collected from patients following a course of NET. RESULTS: Although significantly lower baseline serum BDNF levels were observed in TRD patients than in healthy controls, no changes in serum BDNF levels were found in TRD patients after a course of NET compared to baseline. No significant association was found between serum BDNF levels and depression severity. CONCLUSION: Serum BDNF levels appear to have no clinical utility in the prediction of the antidepressant effects of NET in patients with TRD. Future studies of higher quality and with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.

Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are highly prevalent around the world. Elevated concentrations of free fatty acids (FFAs) are closely related to insulin resistance and T2DM. P2X7 receptor is an ion channel gated by ATP, which is implicated in various scenarios including immune response, pain, and inflammation. In this study, we have explored whether P2X7 receptor is involved in pathological changes in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) induced by high FFA treatment, and the potential beneficial effects of evodiamine. Evodiamine could effectively suppress the enhanced expression of P2X7 receptor caused by high FFAs at both mRNA and protein levels. In addition, high FFA-induced cytotoxicity, the upregulated release of ATP, and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) could be ameliorated by evodiamine in HUVECs. Evodiamine could also reverse the decreased NO formation and the increased adhesive events of immune cells at high FFAs. Moreover, evodiamine inhibited P2X7-dependent TNF-α expression and ERK 1/2 phosphorylation due to high FFAs. All these results indicated that evodiamine could correct the upregulated expression of P2X7 receptor induced under high FFA condition in HUVECs, and consequently suppressed oxidative stress and inflammatory responses.

HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Glycoprotein 120, gp120) can directly stimulate primary sensory afferent neurons and cause chronic neuropathic pain. The P2X3 receptor in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) is associated with the transmission of neuropathic pain. Curcumin isolated from the herb Curcuma rhizome has anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects. The water solubility, targeting and bioavailability of curcumin can be improved by nanoparticle encapsulation. In this study, we sought to explore the effects of nanoparticle-encapsulated curcumin (nano curcumin) on HIV-gp120-induced neuropathic pain mediated by the P2X3 receptor in DRG neurons. The results showed that mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia in rats treated with gp120 were increased compared to those in the control group. The expression levels of P2X3 mRNA and protein in rats treated with gp120 were higher than those in the control group. Nano curcumin treatment decreased mechanical hyperalgesia and thermal hyperalgesia and upregulated the expression levels of P2X3 mRNA and protein in rats treated with gp120. Nano curcumin treatment also reduced the ERK1/2 phosphorylation levels in gp120-treated rat DRG. In addition, P2X3 agonist α,ß-methylene ATP (α,ß-meATP)-induced currents in DRG neurons cultured with gp120 significantly decreased after co-treatment with nano curcumin. Cerebral ischemia and following reperfusion affects many people worldwide. To discover efficient therapeutic approaches, numerous natural products have been investigated. The current study investigated the protective effects of thevetiaflavone, a natural flavonoid obtained from Wikstroemia indica, and the associated mechanisms using PC12 cells induced by oxygen and glucose deprivation. As a result, thevetiaflavone improves cell viability and suppresses the leakage of lactate dehydrogenase from the cytoplasm. Further investigation of the mechanisms demonstrated that thevetiaflavone decreases overproduction of ROS and ameliorates ROS­mediated mitochondrial dysfunction, including collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening. Thevetiaflavone reduces the intracellular Ca2+ level, which is closely associated with mitochondrial function and interplays with ROS. Furthermore, thevetiaflavone inhibits apoptosis in PC12 cells through upregulating the expression of Bcl­2 and downregulating that of Bax and caspase­3 in addition to increasing the activity of caspase­3. These results further indicate the protective effects of thevetiaflavone in vivo and its application in the clinic.

Neuropathic pain is a type of chronic pain caused by nervous system damage and dysfunction. The pathogenesis of chronic pain is complicated, and there are no effective therapies for neuropathic pain. Studies show that the P2X4 receptor expressed in the satellite glial cells (SGCs) of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) is related to neuropathic pain. Artemisinin is a monomeric component extracted from traditional Chinese medicine and has a variety of important pharmacological effects and potential applications. This study observed the effect of artemisinin on neuropathic pain and delineated its possible mechanism. The chronic constriction injury (CCI) rat model was used in this study. The results demonstrated that artemisinin relieved pain behaviors in the CCI rats, inhibited the expression of P2X4 receptor in the DRG, and decreased the ATP-activated currents in HEK293 cells transfected with P2X4 plasmid. Dual-labeling immunofluorescence showed that the coexpression of P2X4 receptor and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the DRG of CCI rats was increased compared to control rats. After CCI rats were treated with artemisinin, the coexpression of P2X4 receptor and GFAP in the DRG was significantly decreased compared to the CCI group. This finding suggested that artemisinin could inhibit the nociceptive transmission mediated by P2X4 receptor in the DRG SGCs and thus relieve pain behaviors in the CCI rats.

BACKGROUND: Soil salinity, one of the major abiotic stresses affecting germination, crop growth, and productivity, is a common adverse environmental factor. The possibility of enhancing the salinity stress tolerance of Cassia obtusifolia L. seeds and seedlings by the exogenous application of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) was investigated. RESULT: To improve the salinity tolerance of seeds, ALA was applied in various concentrations (5, 10, 15, and 20 mg/L). To improve the salinity tolerance of seedlings, ALA was applied in various concentrations (10, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L). After 10 mg/L ALA treatment, physiological indices of seed germination (i.e., germination vigor, germination rate, germination index, and vigor index) significantly improved. At 25 mg/L ALA, there was a significant protection against salinity stress compared with non-ALA-treated seedlings. Chlorophyll content, total soluble sugars, free proline, and soluble protein contents were significantly enhanced. Increased thiobarbituric acid reactive species and membrane permeability levels were also inhibited with the ALA treatment. With the treatments of ALA, the levels of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, i.e., the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), photochemical efficiency (Fv'/Fm'), PSII actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII), and photochemical quench coefficient (qP), all significantly increased. In contrast, the non-photochemical quenching coefficient (NPQ) decreased. ALA treatment also enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase in seedling leaves. The highest salinity tolerance was obtained at 25 mg/L ALA treatment. CONCLUSION: The plant growth regulator ALA could be effectively used to protect C. obtusifolia seeds and seedlings from the damaging effects of salinity stress without adversely affecting plant growth.

OBJECTIVE: In order to get the method to improve the salt resistance of seeds and seedlings for Cassia obtusbifolia under NaCl stress, seed germination and physiological characteristics of C. obtusifolia seedlings were studied. METHOD: Several physiological indexes of C. obtusifolia seeds treated with exogenous carbon monoxide donor hematin under NaCl stress like the germination vigor, germination rate, germination index and vigor index were measured. And other indexes like the relative water content, the contents of photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, the contents of soluble sugar, protein and proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), the activities of superoxide (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) were also measured. RESULT: The germination indexes of C. obtusifolia seeds under NaCl stress had been inhibited obviously. But after the treatment of hematin, every germination indexes were all increased. The result showed that the treatment of exogenous CO donor hematin obviously improved the germination vigor, germination rate, germination index and vigor index, increased the content of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, improved the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), photochemical efficiency (Fv'/Fm'), PS II actual photochemical efficiency (phiPS II), photochemical quench coefficient (qP), decreased non-photochemical quenching coefficient (NPQ) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) , increased the relative water content of leaves and the content of soluble surge, protein and proline. Meanwhile, the results also indicated that CO improved the activities of superoxide (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT). The effects of CO could be reversed when CO scavenger Hb is added. CONCLUSION: Exogenous CO donor hematin with appropriate concentration could significantly alleviate the damages to the seeds and seedlings of C. obtusifolia under NaCl stress and promote the salt resistance of the seeds and seedlings through improving the germination indexes, the photochemical efficiency and the antioxidase activities of the seedlings.

OBJECTIVE: To study the influences of enhanced UV-B radiation and drought stress on the biomass accumulation and allocation of Fagopyrum dibotrys, and so as to provide a theoretical basis for the cultivation, the protection and use of F. dibotrys. METHOD: By experiment of potted plant, the biomass accumulation and allocation of F. dibotrys were measured under different drought stresses and UV-B radiations. RESULT: In conditions of adequate water, enhanced UV-B radiation significantly reduced biomass accumulation to root, biomass accumulation to leaves, total biomass accumulation and biomass allocation to root in F. dibotrys, while it could increase biomass allocation to stem. In conditions of moderate drought stress, enhanced UV-B radiation increased biomass accumulation to root, biomass accumulation to stem and biomass accumulation to root. In the conditions of severe drought stress, enhanced UV-B radiation increased biomass accumulation to root, it also could lead in a certain increase to biomass accumulation to stem. Biomass allocation to root, stem and leaves was not sensitive to enhanced UV-B radiation. CONCLUSION: The influences of enhanced UV-B radiation in simulation and drought stress on the biomass accumulation and allocation of F. dibotrys were determined by water conditions and different apparatus. Overall, we verified that enhanced UV-B radiation would reduce the influences of biomass accumulation of F. dibotrys by drought.

Refractive index of biotissue is a useful optical parameter in the biomedical field. An extended differential total reflection method is introduced to determine the complex refractive index. The real part is directly determined by differential of the reflectance curve, and the imaginary part is obtained from nonlinear fitting. The method is verified by a series of tissue-mimicking phantoms, porcine muscle and porcine adipose.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of different fertilizer applications on the yield of Fagopyrum cymosum and explore the hese scheme for getting the maximum yield on purple soil in the Chongqing-west. METHODS: Experiment with implementing plan of "3414"; The quality Assessment by the contents of bipoly-chrysanthemin; The data process program under the Excel 2003, SPSS 13.0, MatlaB 7.0, Word 2003 environments. RESULTS: Various fertilizer combinations had different transformation efficiency which the N3P2K2 combination was the maximum 97.09% and the NOP2K2 combination was the minimum 4.32%; The NOP2K2 combination had the lowest yield except of the bland group which was 186 kg/667 m2; When the N fertilizer Rate was controlled in the level of 15 kg/667 m2 The yied had no obvious change as the increase of another two kinds fertilizer rate; Three kinds of function could better reflect the relationships between fertilizer and yields, which all of the R2 value were above 0.88; The best one was N K function with the maximum R2; The blank group had maximum content 8.67% of bipoly-chrysanthemin and the content had a little decrease as the increase of N or K, but all higher than 7.14% which were planted in Bei Jing area. CONCLUSIONS: Various fertilizer combinations influenced the transformation efficiency of N, P, K;N is the key fertilizer on purple soil; Reconmentation funtion was N,K function which could be as the guiding function; F; Fertilizer would not influence the quality of Fagopyrum cymosum.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the method for improving the aging resistance of seeds and seedlings of Perilla frutescens through study on seed germination and physiological characteristics of P. frutescens seedlings. METHOD: Several physiological indexes of P. frutescens seeds treated by different concentrations of ZnSO4 and PEG were measured. And other indexes like the activities of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) were also determined. RESULT: The germination indexes of P. frutescens aging seeds treated by different concentrations of ZnSO4 and PEG were all increased. And the seeds that treated by ZnSO4 (600 mg x L(-1)) and PEG (20%) showed the most significantly increase in every index. The germination vigor were 64.7% and 66.8%, the germination rate were 78.7% and 79.4%, the germination index were 11.8 and 12.2, the vigor index were 0.091 1 and 0.0939 respectively. The content of MDA was decreased under different treatment. The activities of three enzymes include SOD, POD and CAT were increased by different treatment of ZnSO4 (0.28, 4.71, 3.82 U x mg(-1) respectively) and PEG (0.29, 4.93, 4.18 U x mg(-1) respectively). CONCLUSION: ZnSO4 with concentration of 600 mg x L(-1) and PEG with concentration of 20% could significantly alleviate the damages to the seeds and seedlings of P. frutescens by aging and promote the aging resistance of the seeds and seedlings.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the genetic diversity of Coptis omeiensis. METHOD: The genetic diversity of 110 individuals from 10 populations was analyzed by RAPD. RESULT: 14 primers were selected to produce highly reproducible RAPD bands. Among 132 amplified bands, 98 showed polymorphism, the percentage of polymorphic bands reached to 74.24%. Nei's gene diversity index (H) was 0.2863, Shannon's information index (I) was 0.3624, G(st) was 0.2305. The genetic distance coefficient and the similarity were 0.1931-0.5245 and 0.5016-0.8843, respectively. CONCLUSION: There exists a held high genetic diversity in C. omeiensis and the majority of genetic variation occurs in the populations. By cluster analysis, the geographical distribution is very obvious. The RAPD marker can be used for the analysis of the genetic diversity and genetic variation of C. omeiensis.
