RESUMEN

RATIONALE: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease with multifactorial etiology. Vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, has protective effects on inflammatory response in various systemic conditions. The clinical features of vitamin D deficiency include growth failure, hypotonia, pathologic fractures, rachitic rosary, tetany and so on. Here we present a case of 12-year-old girl affected by early-onset periodontitis accompanied with vitamin D deficiency. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 12-year-old girl with gingival redness, bleeding associated with tooth brushing, and mandibular anterior teeth movement, with difficulty in mastication for the past 2 months. There is no relevant family history or special systemic disease history. The serological microelement test showed vitamin D levels were significantly lower than normal range. Immunological test showed abnormal CD4+/CD8+(CD3+CD4+/CD3+CD8+) ratio as well. DIAGNOSES: Based on the clinical and serological findings, this patient was ultimately diagnosed with early-onset periodontitis accompanied with vitamin D deficiency. INTERVENTIONS: The main treatments for this patient were 3-fold: periodontal therapy, vitamin D supplement and oral hygiene instructions. OUTCOMES: Following 1-year therapy, periodontal conditions recovered and became stable. And serological vitamin D levels returned to normal range. LESSONS: The case of interest serves as an important reminder to clinicians, that the early-onset periodontitis may be associated with micronutrients abnormalities, and early-diagnosis and treatment could avoid the body heathy disorders.

RESUMEN

Objective: Curcumin has been used as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment. However, the efficacy of curcumin in the periodontal therapy remained controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory efficacy of curcumin as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment (NPT) by systematic review. Methods: Databases including Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched to identify relevant RCTs on the use of curcumin as an adjunct to NPT for the treatment of periodontal disease from inception to July 21, 2021. Two reviewers independently screened literature, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies. Meta-analysis was then performed using Review Manager 5.3 software. Results: A total of 18 RCTs involving 846 patients/sites were included in this meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis revealed that as compared to NPT alone, curcumin as an adjunct to NPT resulted in significant reduction in gingival index (GI) at the 1-week (mean differences (MD) = -0.15, 95% confidence intervals (CI) -0.26 to -0.05, p = 0.005), 2-week (MD = -0.51, 95%CI -0.74 to -0.28, p < 0.0001), 3-week (MD = -0.34, 95%CI -0.66 to -0.02, p = 0.03), 4-week (MD = -0.25, 95%CI -0.48 to -0.02, p = 0.04) or 6-week (MD = -0.33, 95%CI -0.58 to -0.08, p = 0.01) follow-ups. Similar significant reductions were also observed for sulcus bleeding index (SBI) at 1, 2, 4, and 12 weeks. However, there were no statistically significant differences in reducing bleeding on probing (BOP) between curcumin as an adjunct and NPT alone at 4, 12, and 24 weeks. Conclusion: Based on the current evidence, curcumin demonstrates anti-inflammatory efficacies in terms of reducing GI and SBI compared with NPT alone. Moreover, curcumin is a natural herbal medicine with few side effects, and it is a good candidate as an adjunct treatment for periodontal disease.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. is an important medicinal species from China that has been used for thousands of years for its special pharmacological antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antithrombotic, antiviral, and anticarcinogenic activities. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to develop an efficient droplet-vitrification protocol for A. macrocephala shoot tips which could be used as a strategy for long-term conservation within gene banks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The duration of preculture, loading, and PVS2 steps, as well as the recovery medium formulation, were optimized to achieve high levels of survival and regrowth for A. macrocephala shoot tips after liquid nitrogen exposure. RESULTS: Survival and regrowth levels after cryopreservation in the cultivar 'Baizhu' were as high as 76% and 62%, respectively. Thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry suggested that the PVS2 treatment plays a critical role for successful cryopreservation. CONCLUSION: The droplet-vitrification method established in this study could be used to cryopreserve A. macrocephala.

RESUMEN

An on-line high performance liquid chromatography-free radical scavenging detection (HPLC-FRSD) system was developed for rapidly evaluating the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of Citrus fruits. With the system, all samples can be analyzed within 5 min. The on-line HPLC-FRSD system has low limits of detection (0.001-0.010 mg mL(-1)) and quantification (0.005-0.020 mg mL(-1)), excellent recovery rate (90.44-115.72%), stability (RSD < 15.80%), reproducibility (RSD < 2%), and precision (RSD < 2%). Using a guard column instead of an analytic column, this new on-line HPLC-FRSD system performed better than the existing on-line HPLC methods in the analysis of the TAC of Citrus. Compared with the conventional off-line 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiozoline-6)-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging methods, our newly developed system is faster and more robust. The methodology can be a good alternative for analysis TACs of Citrus fruits and potentially for other plants and plant-based products.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of common allergens responsible for cases with allergic rhinitis in Tianjin district. METHOD: A total of 676 cases who are diagnosed with allergic rhinitis in Tianjin district, underwent a skin prick tests with 23 kinds of inhaling allergens and 20 kinds of ingestive ones. The samples were stratified on four age group. Then, an analysis was made to determine the distributive characteristics of allergens responsible for difference groups. RESULT: Among the surveyed local 676 cases with allergic rhinitis, higher positive rates was all inhaling group of allergens. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the mostly responsible common allergens for attacks of allergic rhinitis among local cases in Tianjin district are mites, flowers pollen in inhaling group of allergens.

RESUMEN

The aim of the study was to investigate the sesquiterpene constituents from the rhizomes of Curcuma wenyujin Y. H. Chen et C. Ling. The isolation and purification of the constituents from the 50% EtOH extracts of the rhizomes were performed with repeated column chromatography over sillica gel and macroporous resin. Eight sesquiterpenes were obtained and identified as wenyujinlactone A (1), neolitamone A (2), zedoarondiol (3), isozedoarondiol (4), aerugidiol (5), curcumol (6), curdione (7) and (1R, 10R)-epoxy-(-)-1, 10-dihydrocurdine (8) by means of spectral analysis. Among them, compound 1 was found to be a new eudesmane sesquiterpene lactone, whilst compounds 2-5 were obtained from this plant for the first time.
