RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of rhubarb extract on acute pancreatitis. Ninety-six healthy Sprague Dawley rats, weighing 301±5.12 g were randomly divided into 4 groups: sham surgery (group A), acute pancreatitis model (group B), acute pancreatitis with normal saline (group C), and acute pancreatitis model with rhubarb (group D). The levels of serum amylase (AMY) and TNF-α were measured at 1st, 6th, 12th and 24th hour after modeling, and the pancreatic tissue were used to observe the pathologic changes. Compared to the sham group, the serum AMY and serum tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) levels were significantly increased in the other groups (p <0.05). Compared to the model group and the saline group, the serum AMY, serum TNF-α level and pathological changes of rats in the rhubarb group were significantly lower (p <0.05). The serum AMY and TNF-α levels increased in acute pancreatitis. The rhubarb reduced the serum AMY and TNF-α level in rats with acute pancreatitis and reduced the pathological changes of pancreas and other tissues.

RESUMEN

Crop and animal production in China has increased significantly during the last decades, but at the cost of large increases in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) losses, which contribute to ecosystem degradation and human health effects. This information is largely based on scattered field experiments, surveys and national statistics. As a consequence, there is as yet no comprehensive understanding of the changes in N and P cycling and losses at regional and national scales. Here, we present the results of an integrated assessment of the N and P use efficiencies (NUE and PUE) and N and P losses in the chain of crop and animal production, food processing and retail, and food consumption at regional scale in 1980 and 2005, using a uniform approach and databases. Our results show that the N and P costs of food production-consumption almost doubled between 1980 and 2005, but with large regional variation. The NUE and PUE of crop production decreased dramatically, while NUE and PUE in animal production increased. Interestingly, NUE and PUE of the food processing sector decreased from about 75% to 50%. Intake of N and P per capita increased, but again with large regional variation. Losses of N and P from agriculture to atmosphere and water bodies increased in most regions, especially in the east and south of the country. Highest losses were estimated for the Beijing and Tianjin metropolitan regions (North China), Pearl River Delta (South China) and Yangzi River Delta (East China). In conclusion, the changes and regional variations in NUE and PUE in the food chain of China are large and complex. Changes occurred in the whole crop and animal production, food processing and consumption chain, and were largest in the most populous areas between 1980 and 2005.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of tetrahydroberberine (THB) on the peripheral vascular dopamine DA1 and DA2 receptors. METHOD: Using isolated vascular rings method. RESULT: THB(0.1-10 mumol.L-1) shifted the dose-response curves to the right in a nonparallel fashion and decreased the maximal response (Emax) of both the fenoldopam(FODA, a selective DA1 agonist)-induced and the propyl-butyl-dopamine(PBDA, a selective DA2 agonist)-induced vasorelaxation, showing a non-competitive antagonistic action. The pD'2 values of THB for FODA in the renal, pulmonary and mesenteric arteries were 5.29, 5.37 and 5.46, respectively, while for PBDA in the mesenteric and femoral arteries were 5.53 and 5.48, respectively. The potencies of this antagonistic action were weaker than those of SCH23390, a selective DA1 antagonist, domperidone, a selective DA2 antagonist and l-SPD, a mixed DA1/DA2 antagonist, domperidone, a selective DA2 antagonist and l-SPD, a mixed DA1/DA2 antagonist. CONCLUSION: THB is a mixed peripheral DA, and DA2 receptor antagonist similar to l-SPD.

RESUMEN

The creation of an experimental animal model of traumatic chylothorax was verified by 131I labelled fat (peanut oil). 15 dogs of 3 groups were administered 131I labelled oil via a gastric tube. The results were compared between the two experimental groups and a control group with nonchylous pleural effusion. Dynamic radioactive studies on the blood and pleural fluid showed that the absorption curve of the dog's blood and chyle to 131I labelled oil was identical regardless of different attitudes, and was also similar to that of the human blood because the peak appeared 4 hours after the administration of 131I labelled oil, at which the radioactivity of chyle reached its maximum, more powerful than that of the blood collected at the same time (P less than 0.01). The 99% confidence limitation of radioactivity of the pleural fluid, and the radioactivity ratio of the pleural fluid to blood in the experimental groups were 1.8-10.5 and 493-2340 cpm respectively. The specific characteristics of chyle was then determined qualitatively according to the quantitative norms. We conclude that the technique is parallel with the normal physiological pattern and seems to be more simple and reliable than the conventional methods for detection of intraoperative injury of the thoracic duct and early diagnosis of postoperative chylothorax.
