RESUMEN

Chicoric acid is the major active ingredient of the world-popular medicinal plant purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea (L.) Menoch). It is recognized as the quality index of commercial hot-selling Echinacea products. While the biosynthetic pathway of chicoric acid in purple coneflower has been elucidated recently, its regulatory network remains elusive. Through co-expression and phylogenetic analysis, we found EpMYB2, a typical R2R3-type MYB transcription factor (TF) responsive to methyl jasmonate (MeJA) simulation, is a positive regulator of chicoric acid biosynthesis. In addition to directly regulating chicoric acid biosynthetic genes, EpMYB2 positively regulates genes of the upstream shikimate pathway. We also found that EpMYC2 could activate the expression of EpMYB2 by binding to its G-box site, and the EpMYC2-EpMYB2 module is involved in the MeJA-induced chicoric acid biosynthesis. Overall, we identified an MYB TF that positively regulates the biosynthesis of chicoric acid by activating both primary and specialized metabolic genes. EpMYB2 links the gap between the JA signaling pathway and chicoric acid biosynthesis. This work opens a new direction toward engineering purple coneflower with higher medicinal qualities.

Ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) was employed to investigate the impacts of Pruni Semen processed with different methods(raw and fried) on the liver and spleen metabolism in mice. A total of 24 male mice were randomly assigned to three groups: raw Pruni Semen group, fried Pruni Semen group, and control(deionized water) group. Mice in the three groups were orally administrated with 0.01 g·mL~(-1) Pruni Semen decoction or deionized water for one week. After that, the liver and spleen tissues were collected, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC-MS)-based metabolomic analysis was carried out to investigate the impact of Pruni Semen on the liver and spleen metabolism in mice. Compared with thte control group, the raw Pruni Semen group showed up-regulation of 11 metabolites and down-regulation of 57 metabolites in the spleen(P<0.05), as well as up-regulation of 15 metabolites and down-regulation of 58 metabolites in the liver(P<0.05). The fried Pruni Semen group showed up-regulation of 31 metabolites and down-regulation of 10 metabolites in the spleen(P<0.05), along with up-regulation of 26 metabolites and down-regulation of 61 metabolites in the liver(P<0.05). The differential metabolites identified in the raw Pruni Semen group were primarily associated with alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, purine metabolism, amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, and D-glutamine and D-glutamate metabolism. The differential metabolites identified in the fried Pruni Semen group predominantly involved riboflavin metabolism, amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, purine metabolism, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, D-glutamine and D-glutamate metabolism, and glutathione metabolism. The findings suggest that both raw and fried Pruni Semen have the potential to modulate the metabolism of the liver and spleen in mice by influencing the glutamine and glutamate metabolism.

This study aims to investigate the regulatory effect of the Spatholobi Caulis extract from ethyl acetate(SEA) on natural killer(NK) cells under physiological conditions and elucidate the underlying mechanism. The C57BL/6 mice were randomized into NC and SEA groups, and NK-92 cells were respectively treated with 0, 25, 50, and 100 µg·mL~(-1) SEA. The body weight and immune organ index of the mice were compared between groups. The lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) assay was employed to examine the cytotoxicity of NK-92 cells treated with SEA and the killing activity of mouse NK cells against YAC-1 cells. The cell-counting kit-8(CCK-8) was used to examine the impact of SEA on the proliferation of NK-92 cells. Flow cytometry was employed to measure the number of NK cells in the peripheral blood as well as the expression levels of natural killer group 2 member A(NKG2A) and natural killer group 2 member D(NKG2D). The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was performed to determine the interferon(IFN)-γ secretion in the serum. Semi-quantitative PCR was conducted to determine the mRNA levels of NKG2A, NKG2D, and IFN-γ in spleen cells. Western blot was employed to investigate the involvement of phosphoinositide 3-kinase(PI3K)/extracellular regulated protein kinase 1(ERK1) signaling pathway. The results showed that SEA exhibited no adverse effects on the body, while significantly enhance the number of NK cells and augment the cytotoxicity of NK-92 cells against YAC-1 cells. Moreover, it suppressed the expression of NKG2A, enhanced the expression of NKG2D, promoted IFN-γ secretion, and upregulated the protein levels of PI3K and ERK. The findings suggest that SEA has the potential to enhance the immune recognition and effector function of NK cells by increasing the cell number, modulating the expression of functional receptors, and promoting IFN-γ secretion via the PI3K/ERK signaling pathway.

Artemisinin, a traditional Chinese medicine with remarkable antimalarial activity. In recent years, studies demonstrated that artemisinin and its derivatives (ARTs) showed anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory effects. ARTs have been developed and gradually applied to treat autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. However, their role in the treament of patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases in particular is less well recognized. This review will briefly describe the history of ARTs use in patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, the theorized mechanisms of action of the agents ARTs, their efficacy in patients with autoinmmune and inflammatory diseases. Overall, ARTs have numerous beneficial effects in patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, and have a good safety profile.

Selenylation modification has been widely developed to improve the biological effects of natural polysaccharides. In this study, a purified new polysaccharide (MSP-4) was isolated from Morchella Sextelata, and selenized into SeMSP-4 using the HNO3-Na2SeO3 method. The selenium (Se) content of SeMSP-4 was 101.81 ± 9.90 mg/kg, and the molecular weight of SeMSP-4 was 1.23 × 105 Da. The FT-IR, XRD and AFM results showed that MSP-4 was successfully combined with the Se element. The structure characters of SeMSP-4 were analyzed by methylation analysis combined with 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. And, the radical scavenging test revealed that SeMSP-4 exhibited higher antioxidant capacities in vitro than MSP-4. The cytotoxicity analysis indicated that SeMSP-4 could dose-dependently inhibit the proliferation of HepG2 and HeLa cells, but did not show a cytotoxic effect on normal cells (HEK293). Furthermore, SeMSP-4 stimulation significantly increased the macrophage viability and enhanced NO production in macrophage cells. This study suggested that SeMSP-4 could be utilized as a potential selenium source with antioxidant, antitumor, and immunostimulatory activities.

Background: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is a worldwide disease. VDD is also associated with an increased risk of HIV-related comorbidities and mortality, and patients have a tendency to develop active tuberculosis compared to those with latent tuberculosis infection. Vitamin D supplementation may modulate HIV replication, improve TB inflammation and reduce progression of HIV-TB co-infection. Methods: We meta-analyzed individual participant data from cohort studies, cross-sectional study, and RCTs of vitamin D in HIV group, TB group, and HIV-TB group. The primary outcomes were differences in vitamin D level and VDD prevalence between three groups, the secondary outcomes were CD4 count, HIV viral load, time to sputum smear conversion, time to culture conversion, relapse, morality, and TB score. Results: For vitamin D levels, the overall mean difference (MD) between HIV group and TB group was -0.21 (95% CI, -20.80-20.38; p = 0.9, I2 = 84%), HIV group and HIV-TB group was 0.87 (95% CI, -11.45-13.20; p = 0.89, I2 = 87%), and TB group and HIV-TB group was 1.17 (95% CI, -5.21-7.55; p = 0.72, I2 = 85%). For vitamin D deficiency prevalence, the overall odds ratio (OR) for HIV group versus TB group was 1.23 (95% CI, 0.46-3.31; p = 0.68; I2 = 70%), HIV group versus HIV-TB group was 1.53 (95% CI, 1.03-2.29; p = 0.04; I2 = 0%), and TB group versus HIV-TB group was 0.85 (95% CI, 0.61-1.20; p = 0.36; I2 = 22%). In HIV-TB group, the overall OR for vitamin D group versus placebo group was 0.78 (95% CI, 0.34-1.67; p = 0.52; I2 = 60%). Conclusion: Our findings indicated that there were no variations in vitamin D levels between three groups. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was higher in the HIV-TB group than in the HIV group. Additionally, the administration of vitamin D supplements did not have obvious impact on CD4 count and viral load. Likewise, vitamin D had no effect on time to sputum smear conversion, time to culture conversion, relapse, 12-month morality, and TB score.

Phyllanthus emblica Linn is not only an edible fruit with high nutritional value, but also a medicinal plant with multiple bioactivities. It is widely used in clinical practice with functions of clearing heat, cooling blood, digesting food, strengthening stomach, promoting fluid production, and relieving cough. This review summarized a wide variety of phytonutrients, including nutritional components (mineral elements, amino acids, vitamins, polysaccharides, unsaturated free fatty acids) and functional components (phenolic acids (1-34), tannins (35-98), flavonoids (99-141), sterols (142-159), triterpenoids (160-175), lignans (176-183), alkaloids (184-197), alkanes (198-212), aromatic micromolecules (213-222), other compounds (223-239)). The isolated compounds and the various extracts of P. emblica Linn presented a diverse spectrum of biological activities such as anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, anti-atherosclerosis, neuroprotective, enhancing immunity, anti-fatigue, anti-myocardial fibrosis. The quality markers of P. emblica Linn were predicted and analyzed based on traditional medicinal properties, traditional efficacy, plant genealogy and chemical component characteristics, biogenic pathway of chemical components, measurability of chemical components, transformation characteristics of polyphenolic components, homologous characteristics of medicine and food, compound compatibility environment, and clinical applications. This review also summarized and prospected applications of P. emblica Linn in beverages, preserved fruits, fermented foods, etc. However, the contents of mechanism, structure-activity relationship, quality control, toxicity, extraction, processing of P. emblica Linn are not clear, and are worth further studies in the future.

The Hibiscus manihot L. (HML) Medic, an edible hibiscus of the Malvaceae family, is abundant with flavonoids. The study investigated how Rhizopus-arrhizus-31-assisted pretreatment affects the extraction and bioactivity of flavonoids from HML. The fiber structure of the fermented flavonoid sample (RFF) appears looser, more porous, and more disordered than the unfermented flavonoid sample (RUF). RFF demonstrates milder conditions and yields higher extraction rates. According to the Box-Behnken response surface optimization experiment, the optimal conditions for RFF include a material-liquid ratio of 1:41 g/mL, a 2 h extraction time, a 57% ethanol concentration, and an extraction temperature of 800 °C, resulting in a 3.69% extraction yield, which is 39.25% higher than that of RUF. Additionally, RFF exhibits greater activity than RUF in the radical-scavenging system. The IC50 values for DPPH, OH, and ABTS radicals are 83.43 µg/mL and 82.62 µg/mL, 208.38 µg/mL and 175.99 µg/mL, and 108.59 µg/mL and 75.39 µg/mL for RUF and RFF, respectively. UPLC-QTOF-MS analysis of the active components in the HML flavonoid sample revealed significant differences in the chromatograms of RUF and RFF, indicating that biofermentation led to substantial changes in composition and content from HML.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used to treat triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a breast cancer subtype with poor prognosis. Clinical studies have verified that the Sanyingfang formula (SYF), a TCM prescription, has obvious effects on inhibiting breast cancer recurrence and metastasis, prolonging patient survival, and reducing clinical symptoms. However, its active ingredients and molecular mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, the active ingredients of each herbal medicine composing SYF and their target proteins are obtained from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology database. Breast cancer-related genes are obtained from the GeneCards database. Major targets and pathways related to SYF treatment in breast cancer are identified by analyzing the above data. By conducting molecular docking analysis, we find that the active ingredients quercetin and luteolin bind well to the key targets KDR1, PPARG, SOD1, and VCAM1. In vitro experiments verify that SYF can reduce the proliferation, migration, and invasion ability of TNBC cells. Using a TNBC xenograft mouse model, we show that SYF could delay tumor growth and effectively inhibit the occurrence of breast cancer lung metastasis in vivo. PPARG, SOD1, KDR1, and VCAM1 are all regulated by SYF and may play important roles in SYF-mediated inhibition of TNBC recurrence and metastasis.

BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia often face challenges such as lower psychological resilience, reduced self-worth, and increased social stigma, hindering their recovery. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) has shown promise in boosting psychological resilience and self-esteem while diminishing stigma. However, MBCT demands professional involvement and substantial expenses, adding to the workload of professionals and the financial strain on patients. Mixed-mode Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (M-MBCT) integrates both "face-to-face" and "self-help" approaches to minimize staff effort and costs. This study aims to assess the impact of M-MBCT on the psychological resilience, self-esteem, and stigma in schizophrenia patients. METHODS: This randomized, controlled, parallel-group, assessor-blinded clinical trial enrolled 174 inpatients with schizophrenia. Participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. The experimental group underwent an 8-week M-MBCT intervention, while the control group received standard treatment. Data collection employed the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale (ISMI), and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) before and after the intervention. Post-intervention, significant differences in ISMI, CD-RISC, and RSES scores were observed between the experimental and control groups. RESULTS: In the experimental group, ISMI scores notably decreased, while CD-RISC and RSES scores significantly increased (P < 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis identified age, education, and family history of mental illness as significant factors related to stigma (P < 0.05). Additionally, correlation analysis indicated a significant negative relationship between the reduction in CD-RISC scores and the reduction in ISMI scores (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: M-MBCT effectively enhanced psychological resilience and self-esteem while diminishing stigma in individuals with schizophrenia. M-MBCT emerges as a promising treatment option for schizophrenia sufferers. Physical exercise is known to reduce anxiety, but the underlying brain mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we explore a hypothalamo-cerebello-amygdalar circuit that may mediate motor-dependent alleviation of anxiety. This three-neuron loop, in which the cerebellar dentate nucleus takes center stage, bridges the motor system with the emotional system. Subjecting animals to a constant rotarod engages glutamatergic cerebellar dentate neurons that drive PKCδ+ amygdalar neurons to elicit an anxiolytic effect. Moreover, challenging animals on an accelerated rather than a constant rotarod engages hypothalamic neurons that provide a superimposed anxiolytic effect via an orexinergic projection to the dentate neurons that activate the amygdala. Our findings reveal a cerebello-limbic pathway that may contribute to motor-triggered alleviation of anxiety and that may be optimally exploited during challenging physical exercise.

Carbon monoxide (CO) gas therapy has shown great potential as a very promising approach in the ongoing fight against tumors. However, delivering unstable CO to the tumor site and safely releasing it for maximum efficacy still have unsatisfactory outcomes. In this study, we've developed nanotheranostics (IN-DPPCO NPs) based on conjugated polymer IN-DPP and carbon monoxide (CO) carrier polymer mPEG(CO) for photothermal augmented gas therapy. The IN-DPPCO NPs can release CO with the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) overexpressed in the tumor microenvironment. Meanwhile, IN-DPPCO NPs exhibit strong absorption in the near-infrared window, showing a high photothermal conversion efficiency of up to 41.5% under 808 nm laser irradiation. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that these nanotheranostics exhibit good biocompatibility. Furthermore, the synergistic CO/photothermal therapy shows enhanced therapeutic efficacy compared to gas therapy alone. This work highlights the great promise of conjugated polymer nanoparticles as versatile nanocarriers for spatiotemporally controlled and on-demand delivery of gaseous messengers to achieve precision cancer theranostics.

In contaminated water and soil, little is known about the role and mechanism of the biometabolic molecule siderophore desferrioxamine-B (DFO) in the biogeochemical cycle of uranium due to complicated coordination and reaction networks. Here, a joint experimental and quantum chemical investigation is carried out to probe the biomineralization of uranyl (UO22+, referred to as U(VI) hereafter) induced by Shewanella putrefaciens (abbreviated as S. putrefaciens) in the presence of DFO and Fe3+ ion. The results show that the production of mineralized solids {hydrogen-uranium mica [H2(UO2)2(PO4)2·8H2O]} via S. putrefaciens binding with UO22+ is inhibited by DFO, which can both chelate preferentially UO22+ to form a U(VI)-DFO complex in solution and seize it from U(VI)-biominerals upon solvation. However, with Fe3+ ion introduced, the strong specificity of DFO binding with Fe3+ causes re-emergence of biomineralization of UO22+ {bassetite [Fe(UO2)2(PO4)2·8(H2O)]} by S. putrefaciens, owing to competitive complexation between Fe3+ and UO22+ for DFO. As DFO possesses three hydroxamic functional groups, it forms hexadentate coordination with Fe3+ and UO22+ ions via these functional groups. The stability of the Fe3+-DFO complex is much higher than that of U(VI)-DFO, resulting in some DFO-released UO22+ to be remobilized by S. putrefaciens. Our finding not only adds to the understanding of the fate of toxic U(VI)-containing substances in the environment and biogeochemical cycles in the future but also suggests the promising potential of utilizing functionalized DFO ligands for uranium processing.

This study established an HPLC fingerprint and multi-component content determination method for salt-fired Eucommiae Cortex, and evaluated the quality of salt-fired Eucommiae Cortex from different sources using fingerprint similarity evaluation, cluster analysis(CA), principal component analysis(PCA), and orthogonal partial least square discriminate analysis(OPLS-DA). HPLC was launched on a Cosmosil 5C_(18)-MS-Ⅱ column(4.6 mm×250 mm, 5 µm) by gradient elution with a mobile phase of methanol-0.2% phosphoric acid aqueous solution at a flow rate of 1.0 mL·min~(-1), detection wavelength of 238 nm, column temperature of 30 ℃, and an injection volume of 10 µL. The results of fingerprint similarity evaluation for 20 batches of salt-fired Eucommiae Cortex indicated that, except for batch S3 with a similarity of 0.893, the similarity of the other 19 batches was of ≥ 0.919, suggesting good similarity. Fourteen common peaks were calibrated and seven common peaks were identified including geniposidic acid. The mass fractions of geniposidic acid, chlorogenic acid, geniposide, genipin, pinoresinol diglucoside, liriodendrin, and pinoresinol-4-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside were 0.062 0%-0.426 9%, 0.024 9%-0.116 5%, 0.009 5%-0.052 9%, 0.005 5%-0.034 8%, 0.115 9%-0.317 8%, 0.016 4%-0.108 8%, and 0.026 4%-0.039 8%, respectively. Using CA, PCA, and OPLS-DA, the 20 batches of salt-fired Eucommiae Cortex were classified into three categories. Additionally, through the analysis of variable importance in projection(VIP) under OPLS-DA, two differential quality markers, geniposidic acid and chlorogenic acid, were identified. Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) stands as a degenerative ailment with a substantial and escalating prevalence. The practice of traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapy has become a prevalent complementary and adjunctive approach. A mounting body of evidence suggests its efficacy in addressing KOA. Recent investigations have delved into its underlying mechanism, yielding some headway. Consequently, this comprehensive analysis seeks to encapsulate the clinical application and molecular mechanism of traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapy in KOA treatment. The review reveals that various therapies, such as acupuncture, electroacupuncture, warm needle acupuncture, tuina, and acupotomy, primarily target localized knee components like cartilage, subchondral bone, and synovium. Moreover, their impact extends to the central nervous system and intestinal flora. More perfect experimental design and more comprehensive research remain a promising avenue in the future.

Colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related mortalities worldwide. While artemisinin (ART), a key active compound from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Artemisia annua, has been recognized for its antiproliferative activity against colon cancer cells, its underlying molecular underpinnings remain elusive. Whereas promiscuity of heme-dependent alkylating of macromolecules, mainly proteins, has been seen pivotal as a universal and primary mode of action of ART in cancer cells, accumulating evidence suggests the existence of unique targets and mechanisms of actions contingent on cell or tissue specificities. Here, we employed photoaffinity probes to identify the specific targets responsible for ART's anti-colon cancer actions. Upon validation, microsomal prostaglandins synthase-2 emerged as a specific and reversible target of ART in HCT116 colorectal cancer cells, whose inhibition resulted in reduced cellular prostaglandin E2 biosynthesis and cell growth. Our discovery opens new opportunities for pharmacological treatment of colon cancer.

Recently, the underlying mechanisms of acupuncture on the effects of Alzheimer's disease (AD) treatment have not been fully elucidated. Defects in ALP (autophagy-lysosomal pathway) and TFEB (transcription factor EB) play critical roles in AD. Our previous studies have demonstrated that electroacupuncture (EA) can ameliorate both ß-amyloid (Aß) pathology and cognitive function in APP/PS1 mice. However, the effects of EA on the expression of ALP and TFEB and their potential mechanisms require further investigation. Twenty-eight male APP/PS1 mice were randomly divided into Tg and Tg + EA groups, and 14 C57BL/6 mice served as the wild-type (WT) group. After 1 week of adaptation to the living environment, mice in the Tg + EA group were restrained in mouse bags and received manual acupuncture at Baihui (GV20) acupoint and EA stimulation at bilateral Yongquan (KI1) acupoints, using the same restraint method for WT and Tg groups. The intervention was applied for 15 min each time, every other day, lasting for six weeks. After intervention, the spatial learning and memory of the mice was assessed using the Morris water maze test. Hippocampal Aß expression was detected by immunohistochemistry and ELISA. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to observe autophagic vacuoles and autolysosomes in the hippocampus. Immunofluorescence method was applied to examine the expression of TFEB in CA1 region of the hippocampus and the co-localization of CTSD or LAMP1 with Aß. Western blot analysis was performed to evaluate the changes of LC3, p62, CTSD, LAMP1, TFEB and n-TFEB (nuclear TFEB) in the hippocampus. The findings of behavioral assessment indicated that EA alleviated the cognitive impairment of APP/PS1 mice. Compared with the WT group, the Tg group showed significant cognitive decline and abnormalities in ALP and TFEB function (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). However, these abnormal changes were alleviated in the Tg + EA group (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). The Tg group also showed more senile plaques and ALP dysfunction features, compared with the WT group, and these changes were alleviated by EA. In conclusion, this study highlights that EA ameliorated Aß pathology-related cognitive impairments in the APP/PS1 model associated with ALP and TFEB dysfunction.

Context: Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a form of persistent heart failure. If a patient develops depression, it can worsen the severity of heart failure and can lead to adverse outcomes. No researchers have studied the effects of tonic heart qi soup for patients with CHF and depression. Objective: The study intended to evaluate the clinical efficacy of tonic heart qi soup in the treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF) for patients with comorbid depression. Design: The research team performed a prospective randomized controlled trial. Setting: The study took place in the Department of Chinese Medicine at Cangzhou Central Hospital in Cangzhou, Hebei Province, China. Participants: Participants were 120 patients with CHF at the hospital as inpatients or outpatients between January 2016 and January 2019. Intervention: The research team divided participants into two groups, with 60 patients each: (1) an intervention group, which received conventional Western medical treatment combined with treatment with a commercial tonic heart qi soup and (2) a control group, which received conventional Western medical treatment only. Outcome Measures: The research team measured: (1) treatment efficacy, (2) cardiac function, (3) adverse reactions, (4) B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and Ghrelin, and (5) depression. Results: In the intervention group, 55 participants showed significant improvement in the degree of heart failure, for a total effectiveness rate of 91.67%, which was significantly higher than that of the control group (P = .000). The intervention group had 10 participants in class II, 18 in class III, and 22 in class IV. Among them, 28 participants improved, indicating significantly better outcomes than those of the control group. The intervention group's BNP levels, at 1031.58 ± 118.83 pg/ml, and ghrelin levels, at 481.46 ± 57.53%, were significantly lower than those of the control group. No liver- or renal-function damage, insomnia, or significant adverse reactions occurred for either group. The intervention group's total incidence rate for adverse reactions, at 1.67%, was significantly lower than that of the control group, at 11.67% (P = .000) and also had a higher total effective rate in reducing depression, at 86.67%, compared to that of the control group, at 43.33%. Conclusions: Heart Qi Tonic Tang, as an adjunctive therapy, significantly improved outcomes for CHF patients with depression. It effectively reduced heart failure symptoms, with minimal adverse reactions and increased patient comfort and compliance.

Loving-kindness and compassion meditation (LKCM) have been well applied among employees to improve their health and well-being. Existing studies on LKCM have also provided supportive evidence of its benefits and effectiveness under organizational contexts. The current meta-analytical study aimed to systematically summarise the effects of LKCM in the workplace and to outline directions for future research and practice. Among 327 empirical studies on LKCM published until March 2022, 21 trials focussed on employees and provided sufficient information, which were included in the following meta-analysis. The results showed that LKCM benefited eight categories of workplace outcomes. Specifically, LKCM effectively decreased employees' burnout (g = 0.395, k = 10) and stress (g = 0.544, k = 10) and facilitated their mindfulness (g = 0.558, k = 14), self-compassion (g = 0.646, k = 12), personal mental health (g = 0.308, k = 13), job attitudes (g = 0.283, k = 4), interpersonal relationships (g = 0.381, k = 12), and psychological resources (g = 0.406, k = 6). The results of moderation analyses further indicated that the participants' job type, gender, and the focus of LKCM might differentially fluctuate the magnitude of LKCM effects. To advance research and best practice, we finally pointed out several issues that deserve attention, such as long-term effects, underlying mechanisms, potential moderators, and outcomes or influential factors at the organizational level.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common and serious neuropsychiatric syndrome among older patients, and lacks effective therapies. Omega-3 fatty acids, possessing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, have shown potent neuroprotective effects in several diseases. The present study investigated whether omega-3 fatty acids could exert a neuroprotective role against POD in aged mice. A mouse model of POD was established to explore the role of omega-3 fatty acids in laparotomy-induced delirium-like behavior by evaluating systemic inflammatory changes, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and behavior at different time points in aged mice. Oral gavage with omega-3 fatty acids (300 mg/kg) for 3 weeks before surgery significantly attenuated anesthesia/surgery-induced POD-like behavior and the accumulation of proinflammatory cytokines from the peripheral blood in aged mice. Moreover, it also remarkably mitigated neuroinflammation and the oxidative stress response (malondialdehyde [MDA] and superoxide dismutase [SOD]) in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of surgical mice. Our findings provided evidence that pretreatment with omega-3 fatty acids may play a vital role in the treatment of POD through mechanisms involving its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which may be a promising prevention strategy for POD in aged patients.
