ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The rhizome of Kaempferia galanga L., a medicinal and edible Plant, was widely distributed in many Asian and African counties. It has been traditionally used to treat gastroenteritis, hypertension, rheumatism and asthma. However, there is a lack of modern pharmacology studies regarding its anti-gastric ulcer activity. AIM OF THE STUDY: The objective of this study is to investigate the protective effects of an extract from K. galanga L. rhizome (Kge) and its active components kaempferol and luteolin on ethanol-induced gastric ulcer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The kge was prepared by ultrasonic-assisted extraction, and the contents of kaempferol and luteolin were determined by HPLC. The mice were randomly divided into seven groups: blank control (0.5 % CMC-Na; 0.1 mL/10 g), untreatment (0.5 % CMC-Na; 0.1 mL/10 g), Kge (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg), kaempferol (100 mg/kg) and luteolin (100 mg/kg) groups. The mice were treated intragastrically once daily for 7 days. At 1 h post the last administration, the mice in all groups except the blank control group were intragastrically administrated with anhydrous alcohol (0.1 mL/10 g) once to induce gastric ulcer. Then, fasting was continued for 1 h, followed by sample collection for evaluation by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay. RESULTS: The contents of kaempferol and luteolin in Kge were determined as 3713 µg/g and 2510 µg/g, respectively. Alcohol induced severely damages with edema, inflammatory cell infiltration and bleeding, and the ulcer index was 17.63 %. After pre-treatment with Kge (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg), kaempferol and luteolin, the pathological lesions were obviously alleviated and ulcer indices were reduced to 13.42 %, 11.65 %, 6.54 %, 3.58 % and 3.85 %, respectively. In untreated group, the contents of Ca2+, myeloperoxidase, malondialdehyde, NO, cyclic adenosine monophosphate and histamine were significantly increased, while the contents of hexosamine, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and prostaglandin E2 were significantly decreased; the transcriptional levels of IL-1α, IL-1ß, IL-6, calcitonin gene related peptide, substance P, M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor, histamine H2 receptor, cholecystokinin 2 receptor and H+/K+ ATPase were significantly increased when compared with the blank control group. After pre-treatment, all of these changes were alleviated, even returned to normal levels. Kge exhibited anti-gastric ulcer activity and the high dose of Kge (400 mg/kg) exhibited comparable activity to that of kaempferol and luteolin. CONCLUSION: The study showed that K. galanga L., kaempferol, and luteolin have protective effects against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers. This is achieved by regulating the mucosal barrier, oxidative stress, and gastric regulatory mediators, as well as inhibiting the TRPV1 signaling pathway and gastric acid secretion, ultimately reducing the gastric ulcer index.

Context: Early intervention and treatment are key measures for tuberculosis (TB) prevention and control, making early, rapid, and accurate diagnostic methods crucial. The Liquid-solid (Biphasic) rapid cultures is a novel tool for the differential diagnosis of tuberculosis. Objective: The study intended to evaluate the value of the biphasic cultures by comparing it to the acid-fast staining and liquid cultures, which have been the traditional gold-standard technology, to determine its value in the diagnosis of TB. Design: The research team conducted an experimental study. Setting: The study took place at the Affiliated Wuxi Fifth Hospital of Jiangnan University in Wuxi, China. Participants: Participants were 221 patients with suspected pulmonary tuberculosis who had been admitted to the hospital between July 2020 and December 2021. Outcome Measures: Using three methods-liquid-solid (biphasic) culture, acid-fast staining, and mycobacterial growth indicator tube (MGIT) 960 liquid culture, the research team tested participants' sputum samples: (1) for sensitivity; (2) for time to positive culture results, and (3) for differential diagnosis. Results: The biphasic culture's sensitivity was significantly higher than that of acid-fast staining, (P = .0003), and no significant difference existed between it and the MGIT 960 liquid cultures. The biphasic cultures's mean time to positivity was significantly shorter than that of the MGIT 960 liquid culture at the intervals 11-20 d (P < .0001) and 21-35 days (P = .0001). Moreover, the biphasic cultures could preliminarily differentiate nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) from mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), which is a significant advantage in tuberculosis diagnosis. Conclusions: This study highlights the potential of a biphasic culture as a reliable tool for the rapid differential diagnosis of tuberculosis, with a faster detection cycle and a higher sensitivity than conventional methods. The biphasic cultures is a valuable addition to the tuberculosis diagnostic armamentarium and can help improve patients' outcomes by enabling earlier diagnosis and treatments.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and degree centrality (DC) values before and after acupuncture in young women with non-menstrual migraine without aura (MWoA) through rest blood-oxygen-level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD fMRI). METHODS: Patients with non-menstrual MWoA (Group 1, n = 50) and healthy controls (Group 2, n = 50) were recruited. fMRI was performed in Group 1 at 2 time points: before acupuncture (time point 1, TP1); and after the end of all acupuncture sessions (time point 2, TP2), and performed in Group 2 as a one-time scan. Patients in Group 1 were assessed with the Migraine Disability Assessment Questionnaire (MIDAS) and the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ) at TP1 and TP2 after fMRI was performed. The ALFF and DC values were compared within Group 1 at two time points and between Group 1 and Group2. The correlation between ALFF and DC values with the statistical differences and the clinical scales scores were analyzed. RESULTS: Brain activities increased in the left fusiform gyrus and right angular gyrus, left middle occipital gyrus, and bilateral prefrontal cortex and decreased in left inferior parietal lobule in Group 1, which had different ALFF values compared with Group 2 at TP1. The bilateral fusiform gyrus, bilateral inferior temporal gyrus and right middle temporal gyrus increased and right angular gyrus, right superior marginal gyrus, right inferior parietal lobule, right middle occipital gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, right anterior central gyrus, and right supplementary motor area decreased in activity in Group 1 had different DC values compared with Group 2 at TP1. ALFF and DC values of right inferior temporal gyrus, right fusiform gyrus and right middle temporal gyrus were decreased in Group1 at TP1 compared with TP2. ALFF values in the left middle occipital area were positively correlated with the pain degree at TP1 in Group1 (correlation coefficient r, r = 0.827, r = 0.343; P < 0.01, P = 0.015). The DC values of the right inferior temporal area were positively correlated with the pain degree at TP1 in Group 1 (r = 0.371; P = 0.008). CONCLUSION: Spontaneous brain activity and network changes in young women with non-menstrual MwoA were altered by acupuncture. The right temporal area may be an important target for acupuncture modulated brain function in young women with non-menstrual MwoA.

AIM: Mindfulness has been widely used with all kinds of people, such as students, educators or patients. However, there have been no studies explicitly targeting ward nurses. The aim of this study is to explore the concept analysis of mindfulness in ward nurses. DESIGN: A concept analysis. METHODS: An electronic literature search of MEDLINE, Google Scholar, PubMed, Cambridge Online Dictionary and EBSCO on mindfulness was conducted over a ten-year period of Peer-reviewed scholarly articles published in English. The Walker and Avant's framework was used for this paper. RESULTS: Eleven articles in total were included in this study. Three attributes of mindfulness in ward nurses were identified as in the present moment, paying attention and being receptive. The consequence of mindfulness in ward nurses lead to positive changes, which included improving well-being, decreased burnout, anxiety and depression. An exploration of mindfulness in ward nurses was developed. The findings of this paper can be used in ward nurses, research and administration.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a significant global health concern that can lead to depression in affected patients. Liquiritin apioside (LA) possesses anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its anti-inflammatory mechanism in IBD has not been extensively studied. PURPOSE: This study elucidates the pivotal role of LA in alleviating inflammation by regulating gut metabiota-derived metabolites and evaluating its regulative effects on promoting a balance of Th17/Treg cells in colitis mice. METHODS: To evaluate the effect of LA on IBD,16S rRNA gene sequencing and UPLC-QTOF-MS analysis were used to identify the changes of intestinal bacteria and their metabolites. Cytokines levels were determined by ELISA and qPCR, while immune cell ratios were evaluated via flow cytometry. RESULTS: Our findings revealed that LA treatment ameliorated general states of DSS-induced colitis mice and their accompanying depressive behaviors. Moreover, LA restricted the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and revised the imbalanced Treg/Th17 differentiation, while promoting SCFAs production in inflamed colon tissues. Fecal microbiota transplantation from LA-fed mice also corrected the imbalanced Treg/Th17 differentiation, indicating that LA-mediated restoration of the colonic Treg/Th17 balance mainly depends on the changes in gut metabolites. CONCLUSION: These results provide scientific evidence explaining the apparent paradox of low bioavailability and high bioactivity in polyphenols, and suggesting that LA could be used as a potential dietary supplement for the prevention and improvement of IBD.

Currently, Chinese herbal feed additives (CHFA) are commonly utilized in domestic pig farms. However, their impact on the sperm quality and reproductive capacity of imported breeding boars has yet to be thoroughly explored. In this study, the effect of CHFA on the sperm quality and reproductive capacity of the imported Duroc boars was investigated. Sixteen boars were randomly divided into control group and experimental (CHFA treated) group and fed normal or CHFA-levels containing diets, respectively. The sperm quality and reproductive hormone levels were periodically tested, and the reproductive capacity with breeding sows were evaluated. The results showed that the CHFA treated group boars significantly improved sperm volume, sperm concentration, and motility and reduced the sperm abnormalities. Furthermore, the serum levels of reproductive hormone such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone (T) in the CHFA treated group were significantly higher than those in the control group. Although there was no significant difference in the initial birth weight of piglets between the two groups, the CHFA treated group had a significantly higher average number of piglets born, the average number of piglets born alive, the number of piglets weaned at 28 days, and the weaning weight compared to the control group. These findings suggest that CHFA can significantly improve the sperm quality of breeding boars and enhance their reproductive hormone levels as well as the reproductive capacity, providing direct evidence for the further application of CHFA in the management of breeding boars in China.

OBJECTIVES: Ischemia-reperfusion injury is a complicated pathologic process that involves multiple factors including oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, calcium overload, inflammatory response, disturbances in energy metabolism, apoptosis, and some newly-described forms of programmed cell death (e.g., necroptosis, autophagy, pyroptosis, patanatos, and ferroptosis). Chinese herbal monomers (CHMs) have long been applied to treat ischemia-reperfusion injury based on a solid research foundation. This paper objectively reviews in vitro and in vivo studies on the use of CHMs to protect against ischemia-reperfusion injury. METHODS: We reviewed 31 CHMs that have been shown to be effective for treating ischemia-reperfusion injury models of the heart, brain, and kidney. According to the mechanism of action, these CHMs were divided into three categories: protecting damaged histocytes, inhibiting inflammatory cells, and promoting the proliferation of damaged histocytes. Some CHMs were found to have more than one mechanism at the same time. RESULTS: Of the 31 CHMs, 28 protect damaged histocytes, 13 inhibit inflammatory cells, and three promote the proliferation of damaged histocytes. CONCLUSIONS: CHMs show promise for treating ischemia-reperfusion injury. The eexisting treatment experiences for ischemia-reperfusion injury can be used as a reference.

Drought is one of the major environmental stresses, resulting in serious yield reductions in wheat production. Silicon (Si) has been considered beneficial to enhancing wheat resistance to drought stress. However, few studies have explored the mediated effects of foliar supplementation of Si on drought stress imposed at different wheat growth stages. Therefore, a field experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of Si supplementation on the physiological and biochemical responses of wheat to drought stress imposed at the jointing (D-jointing), anthesis (D-anthesis) and filling (D-filling) stages. Our results showed that a moderate water deficit markedly decreased the dry matter accumulation, leaf relative water content (LRWC), photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Sc), transpiration rate (Tr) and antioxidant activity [peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)]. On the contrary, it remarkably increased the content of osmolytes (proline, soluble sugar, soluble protein) and lipid peroxidation. The grain yields of D-jointing, D-anthesis and D-filling treatments were 9.59%, 13.9% and 18.9% lower, respectively, compared to the control treatment (CK). However, foliar supplementation of Si at the anthesis and filling stages significantly improved plant growth under drought stress due to the increased Si content. Consequently, the improvement in antioxidant activity and soluble sugar, and the reduction in the content of ROS, increased the LRWC, chlorophyll content, Pn, Sc and Tr, and ultimately boosted wheat yield by 5.71% and 8.9%, respectively, in comparison with the non-Si-treated plants subjected to water stress at the anthesis and filling stages. However, the mitigating effect of Si application was not significant at the jointing stage. It was concluded that foliar supplementation of Si, especially at the reproductive stage, was effective in alleviating drought-induced yield reduction.

INTRODUCTION: Drug delivery systems (DDSs) formed by natural active compounds be instrumental in developing new green excipients and novel DDS from natural active compounds (NACs). 'Unification of medicines and excipients'(UME), the special inherent nature of the natural active compounds, provides the inspiration and conduction to achieve this goal. AREAS COVERED: This review summarizes the typical types of NACs from herbal medicine, such as saponins, flavonoids, polysaccharides, etc. that act as excipients and their main application in DDS. The comparison of the drug delivery systems formed by NACs and common materials and the primary formation mechanisms of these NACs are also introduced to provide a deepened understanding of their performance in DDS. EXPERT OPINION: Many natural bioactive compounds, such as saponins, polysaccharides, etc. have been used in DDS. Diversity of structure and pharmacological effects of NACs turn out the unique advantages in improving the performance of DDSs like targeting ability, adhesion, encapsulation efficiency(EE), etc. and enhancing the bioavailability of loaded drugs.

Ablative procedures such as anterior capsulotomy are potentially effective in refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Converging evidence suggests the ventral internal capsule white matter tracts traversing the rostral cingulate and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex and thalamus is the optimal target for clinical efficacy across multiple deep brain stimulation targets for OCD. Here we ask which prefrontal regions and underlying cognitive processes might be implicated in the effects of capsulotomy by using both task fMRI and neuropsychological tests assessing OCD-relevant cognitive mechanisms known to map across prefrontal regions connected to the tracts targeted in capsulotomy. We tested OCD patients at least 6 months post-capsulotomy (n = 27), OCD controls (n = 33) and healthy controls (n = 34). We used a modified aversive monetary incentive delay paradigm with negative imagery and a within session extinction trial. Post-capsulotomy OCD subjects showed improved OCD symptoms, disability and quality of life with no differences in mood or anxiety or cognitive task performance on executive, inhibition, memory and learning tasks. Task fMRI revealed post-capsulotomy decreases in the nucleus accumbens during negative anticipation, and in the left rostral cingulate and left inferior frontal cortex during negative feedback. Post-capsulotomy patients showed attenuated accumbens-rostral cingulate functional connectivity. Rostral cingulate activity mediated capsulotomy improvement on obsessions. These regions overlap with optimal white matter tracts observed across multiple stimulation targets for OCD and might provide insights into further optimizing neuromodulation approaches. Our findings also suggest that aversive processing theoretical mechanisms may link ablative, stimulation and psychological interventions.

Pollen development is critical to plant reproduction, but the underlying regulatory molecular mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. The Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) EFR3 OF PLANT 3 (EFOP3) and EFR3 OF PLANT 4 (EFOP4) genes encode members of the Armadillo (ARM) repeat superfamily that play key roles in pollen development. Herein, we demonstrate that EFOP3 and EFOP4 are co-expressed in pollen at anther stages 10-12, but loss-of-function of both EFOP3 and EFOP4 leads to male gametophyte sterility, irregular intine, and shriveled pollen grains at anther stage 12. We further established that full-length EFOP3 and EFOP4 specifically localize to the plasma membrane, and the integrity of these proteins is essential for pollen development. We observed uneven intine, less organized cellulose and reduced pectin content in mutant pollen compared with the wild-type. These, together with the misexpression of several genes related to cell wall metabolism in efop3-/- efop4+/- mutants, suggest that EFOP3 and EFOP4 may indirectly regulate the expression of these genes to affect intine formation, thus controlling Arabidopsis pollen fertility in a functionally redundant manner. Moreover, transcriptome analysis showed that the absence of EFOP3 and EFOP4 function affects multiple pollen development pathways. These results enhance our understanding of EFOPs proteins and their role in pollen development.

Introduction: Asthma is primarily divided into two categories: type 2 (T2-high) and non-type 2 (T2-low). A relationship between asthma severity and vitamin D deficiency has been identified, but its impact on each asthma endotype remains unknown. Methods: We clinically examined the influence of vitamin D on patients with T2-high (n = 60) or T2-low asthma (n = 36) compared with controls (n = 40). Serum 25(OH)D levels, inflammatory cytokines and spirometry were measured. Mouse models were then used to further analyze the effects of vitamin D on both asthmatic endotypes. BALB/c mice were fed with vitamin D-deficient (LVD), -sufficient (NVD), or -supplemented diets (HVD) throughout lactation and offspring followed the same diet after weaning. Offspring were sensitized/challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) to establish "T2-high" asthma or OVA combined with ozone exposure (OVA + ozone) to induce "T2-low" asthma. Spirometry and serum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and lung tissues were analyzed. Results: Serum 25(OH)D levels were decreased in asthmatic patients compared with controls. Patients with vitamin D deficiency (Lo) had varying degrees of elevation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-5, IL-6, and IL-17A, decreased expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, and altered forced expiratory volume in the first second as a percentage of predicted value (FEV1%pred) in both asthmatic endotypes. Vitamin D status had a stronger correlation with FEV1%pred in T2-low asthma than T2-high asthma, and 25(OH)D level was only positively linked to maximal mid-expiratory flow as a percentage of predicted value (MMEF%pred) in the T2-low group. Inflammation, hyperresponsiveness, and airway resistance (RL) was increased in both asthma models compared with controls while vitamin D deficiency further increased airway inflammation and airway obstruction. These findings were particularly prominent in T2-low asthma. Discussion: The potential function and mechanisms of vitamin D and both asthma endotypes should be studied individually, and further analysis of the potential signaling pathways involved with vitamin D on T2-low asthma is warranted.

Observational study indicated that folic acid (FA) supplementation may protect against tuberculosis-drug-induced liver injury (TBLI). The aim is to investigate the effect and mechanism of FA on TBLI in rats. Liver injury was induced by a daily gavage of isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RIF) in the model and FA groups. Rats in the FA group were also treated with 2.5 mg/kg body weight FA. Rats in the control group were not treated. Eight rats were used in each group. The severity of liver injury was measured by the serum levels of hepatic enzymes and histological score. The metabolites in serum and liver tissues were analyzed by HPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS. FA treatment significantly reduced alanine aminotransferase and liver necrosis. Seventy-nine differential metabolites in the serum and liver tissues were identified among the three groups. N-acylethanolamines, INH and RIF metabolites, phosphatidylcholines, lysophosphatidylcholines, monoglycerides, diglycerides and bile acids were regulated by FA treatment, involving key metabolic pathways, such as N-acylethanolamine metabolism, INH and RIF metabolism, liver regeneration, inflammation alleviation and bile acid metabolism. RT-PCR and western blotting results confirmed the altered N-acylethanolamine metabolism and improved drug metabolism by FA. In conclusion, FA was protective against TBLI, which may be related to the regulation of N-acylethanolamine metabolism and drug detoxification by FA.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal tumors are a major cause of cancer-related deaths and have become a major public health problem. This study aims to provide a scientific basis for improving clinical treatment effects, quality of life, and prognosis of patients with gastrointestinal tumors. AIM: To explore the clinical effect of the multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment (MDT) nutrition intervention model on patients with gastrointestinal tumors. METHODS: This was a case control study which included patients with gastrointestinal tumors who received radiotherapy at the Department of Oncology between January 2021 and January 2023. Using a random number table, 120 patients were randomly divided into MDT and control groups with 60 patients in each group. To analyze the effect of MDT on the nutritional status and quality of life of the patients, the nutritional status and quality of life scores of the patients were measured before and after the treatment. RESULTS: Albumin (ALB), transferrin (TRF), hemoglobin (Hb), and total protein (TP) levels significantly decreased after the treatment. The control group had significantly lower ALB, TRF, Hb, and TP levels than the MDT group, and the differences in these levels between the two groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). After the treatment, the MDT group had significantly more well-nourished patients than the control group (P < 0.05). The quality of life total score, somatic functioning, role functioning, and emotional functioning were higher in the MDT group than in the control group. By contrast, pain, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting scores were lower in the MDT group than in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: MDT nutritional intervention model effectively improves the nutritional status and quality of life of the patients. The study provides a rigorous theoretical basis for improving the prognosis of cancer patients. In the future, we intend to provide additional treatment methods for improving the quality of life of patients with cancer.

Purpose: Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common bone cancer with a high risk of metastasis, high growth rate, and poor prognosis. Honokiol (HNK) is a general ingredient of traditional Chinese medicine, with a potential anti-tumor effect. However, HNK is insoluble in water and lacks drug targeting, which limits its clinical application. To improve the OS therapeutic effect of HNK, we used HNK-loaded liposomes modified with hyaluronic acid-phospholipid conjugates (HA-DOPE) to treat OS based on the HA interaction with CD44. Methods: The HNK-loaded liposomes were prepared via thin-film hydration and sonication. HA-DOPE was used to combine the HNK-loaded liposomes (HA-DOPE@Lips/HNK) via sonication and co-extrusion. HA-DOPE@Lips/HNK were characterized with respect to size, zeta potential, polymer dispersity index (PDI), and stability, and transmission electron microscopy was performed. Cellular uptake, cell viability, cell apoptosis, cell cycle, and mitochondrial activity were utilized to evaluate the antitumor effect in vitro. The biodistribution, xenograft tumor growth inhibition, and safety of HA-DOPE@Lips/HNK were evaluated in 143B OS xenograft mice in vivo. Results: The particle size, PDI, and zeta potential of HA-DOPE@Lips/HNK were 146.20±0.26 nm, 0.20±0.01, and -38.45±0.98 mV, respectively. The encapsulation rate and drug loading were 80.14±0.32% and 3.78±0.09%, respectively. HA-DOPE@Lips/HNK could inhibit cell proliferation, cause apoptosis, block the cell cycle and disrupt mitochondrial activity. HA-DOPE@Lips/HNK specially delivered the drug into the tumor and inhibited tumor growth, and showed no obvious toxicity to normal tissues. Conclusion: HA-DOPE@Lips/HNK could deliver HNK into the tumor site and had a good antitumor ability in vitro and in vivo. In addition, HA-DOPE@Lips/HNK increased the antitumor effects of HNK. Thus, it provides a promising nanocarrier to improve drug delivery in OS therapy.

BACKGROUND: Overactive bladder is a common, long-term symptom complex, which includes frequency of micturition, urgency with or without associated incontinence and nocturia. Around 11% of the population have symptoms, with this figure increasing with age. Symptoms can be linked to social anxiety and adaptive behavioural change. The cost of treating overactive bladder is considerable, with current treatments varying in effectiveness and being associated with side effects. Acupuncture has been suggested as an alternative treatment. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of acupuncture for treating overactive bladder in adults, and to summarise the principal findings of relevant economic evaluations. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Specialised Register, which contains trials identified from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE (including In-Process, Epub Ahead of Print, Daily), ClinicalTrials.gov and WHO ICTRP (searched 14 May 2022). We also searched the Allied and Complementary Medicine database (AMED) and bibliographic databases where knowledge of the Chinese language was necessary: China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI); Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database (VIP) and WANFANG (China Online Journals), as well as the reference lists of relevant articles.  SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-RCTs and cross-over RCTs assessing the effects of acupuncture for treating overactive bladder in adults. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Four review authors formed pairs to assess study eligibility and extract data. Both pairs used Covidence software to perform screening and data extraction. We assessed risk of bias using Cochrane's risk of bias tool and assessed heterogeneity using the Chi2 testand I2 statistic generated within the meta-analyses. We used a fixed-effect model within the meta-analyses unless there was a moderate or high level of heterogeneity, where we employed a random-effects model. We used the GRADE approach to assess the certainty of evidence. MAIN RESULTS: We included 15 studies involving 1395 participants in this review (14 RCTs and one quasi-RCT). All included studies raised some concerns regarding risk of bias. Blinding of participants to treatment group was only achieved in 20% of studies, we considered blinding of outcome assessors and allocation concealment to be low risk in only 25% of the studies, and random sequence generation to be either unclear or high risk in more than 50% of the studies. Acupuncture versus no treatment One study compared acupuncture to no treatment. The evidence is very uncertain regarding the effect of acupuncture compared to no treatment in curing or improving overactive bladder symptoms and on the number of minor adverse events (both very low-certainty evidence). The study report explicitly stated that no major adverse events occurred. The study did not report on the presence or absence of urinary urgency, episodes of urinary incontinence, daytime urinary frequency or episodes of nocturia. Acupuncture versus sham acupuncture Five studies compared acupuncture with sham acupuncture. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of acupuncture on curing or improving overactive bladder symptoms compared to sham acupuncture (standardised mean difference (SMD) -0.36, 95% confidence interval (CI) -1.03 to 0.31; 3 studies; 151 participants; I2 = 65%; very low-certainty evidence). All five studies explicitly stated that there were no major adverse events observed during the study. Moderate-certainty evidence suggests that acupuncture probably makes no difference to the incidence of minor adverse events compared to sham acupuncture (risk ratio (RR) 1.28, 95% CI 0.30 to 5.36; 4 studies; 222 participants; I² = 0%). Only one small study reported data for the presence or absence of urgency and for episodes of nocturia. The evidence is of very low certainty for both of these outcomes and in both cases the lower confidence interval is implausible. Moderate-certainty evidence suggests there is probably little or no difference in episodes of urinary incontinence between acupuncture and sham acupuncture (mean difference (MD) 0.55, 95% CI -1.51 to 2.60; 2 studies; 121 participants; I2 = 57%). Two studies recorded data regarding daytime urinary frequency but we could not combine them in a meta-analysis due to differences in methodologies (very low-certainty evidence). Acupuncture versus medication Eleven studies compared acupuncture with medication. Low-certainty evidence suggests that acupuncture may slightly increase how many people's overactive bladder symptoms are cured or improved compared to medication (RR 1.25, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.43; 5 studies; 258 participants; I2 = 19%). Low-certainty evidence suggests that acupuncture may reduce the incidence of minor adverse events when compared to medication (RR 0.34, 95% CI 0.26 to 0.45; 8 studies; 1004 participants; I² = 51%). The evidence is uncertain regarding the effect of acupuncture on the presence or absence of urinary urgency (MD -0.40, 95% CI -0.56 to -0.24; 2 studies; 80 participants; I2 = 0%; very low-certainty evidence) and episodes of urinary incontinence (MD -0.33, 95% CI -2.75 to 2.09; 1 study; 20 participants; very low-certainty evidence) compared to medication. Low-certainty evidence suggests there may be little to no effect of acupuncture compared to medication in terms of daytime urinary frequency (MD 0.73, 95% CI -0.39 to 1.85; 4 studies; 360 participants; I2 = 28%). Acupuncture may slightly reduce the number of nocturia episodes compared to medication (MD -0.50, 95% CI -0.65 to -0.36; 2 studies; 80 participants; I2 = 0%, low-certainty evidence). There were no incidences of major adverse events in any of the included studies. However, major adverse events are rare in acupuncture trials and the numbers included in this review may be insufficient to detect these events. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: The evidence is very uncertain about the effect acupuncture has on cure or improvement of overactive bladder symptoms compared to no treatment. It is uncertain if there is any difference between acupuncture and sham acupuncture in cure or improvement of overactive bladder symptoms. This review provides low-certainty evidence that acupuncture may result in a slight increase in cure or improvement of overactive bladder symptoms when compared with medication and may reduce the incidence of minor adverse events. These conclusions must remain tentative until the completion of larger, higher-quality studies that use relevant, comparable outcomes. Timing and frequency of treatment, point selection, application and long-term follow-up are other areas relevant for research.

An efficient copper-iodine cocatalyzed intermolecular C-H aminocyanation of indoles with a broad substrate scope has been developed for the first time. This method enables highly step-economic access to 2-amino-3-cyanoindoles in moderate to good yields and provides a complementary strategy for the regioselective difunctionalization of carbon═carbon double bonds of interest in organic synthesis and related areas. Mechanistic studies suggest that these transformations are initiated by iodine-mediated C2-H amination with azoles, followed by copper-catalyzed C3-H cyanation with ethyl cyanoformate.

The present study was designed to evaluate the chemical extraction, chemical composition, and antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the total flavonoids in Willow Buds (TFW). We investigated the optimal extraction of TFW using response surface methodology (RSM). Chemical compounds were analyzed using Q-Orbitrap LC-MS/MS. The DPPH radical scavenging capacity, hydroxy radical inhibitory ability, and superoxide anion radical inhibitory ability were explored to determine the antioxidant properties of flavonoid extractions. The antibacterial effect was assessed via minimal inhibitory concentration. The results demonstrated that the optimal extraction conditions were an ethanol concentration of 50%, a time of 35 min, and a liquid/material ratio of 70:1 mL/g. Under these conditions, the yield of TFW was 7.57%. Eight flavonoids, a phenolic glycoside, and an alkaloid were enriched in the Willow Buds. The TFW exhibited significant antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 0.18-0.24 mg/mL and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. TFW may be explored as potential and natural compounds in food and pharmacological applications.

Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) infection causes "blood flesh" symptoms in watermelon fruits, which severely reduces yield and edibleness. However, the growth of watermelon fruits is strongly associated with boron (B), a trace element for improving fruit quality. In this study, B-gradient hydroponic experiments (B concentration: 0, 2.86, and 5.72 mg·L-1 H3BO3) and foliar-spray experiments (B concentration: 30 and 300 mg·L-1 H3BO3) were performed. We found that the B-supplement could inhibit CGMMV infection and especially relieve "blood flesh" symptoms in watermelon fruits. The nutrient element, soluble sugar, and cell wall polysaccharide contents and their metabolism- and transport-related gene expressions were determined in leaves and fruits of the watermelons in B-gradient hydroponic and foliar-spray experiments. We found that the accumulation and metabolism of nutrients and carbohydrates in cells were disrupted by CGMMV infection; however, the B-supplement could restore and maintain their homeostasis. Additionally, we uncovered that NIP5;1 and SWEET4, induced by B-application with CGMMV infection, could majorly contribute to the resistance to CGMMV infection by regulating nutrient elements and carbohydrate homeostasis. These results provided a novel insight into the molecular mechanism of B-mediated CGMMV suppression and an efficient method of B-application for the improvement of watermelon quality after CGMMV infection.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) usually causes hyperthermia and damages healthy tissues. Developing a PTT platform with enhanced therapeutic effects and reduced side effects to normal tissues attracts increasing attention. Herein, we developed a multifunctional theranostic nanoplatform using poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) loaded with near-infrared (NIR) photothermal agent (new indocyanine green IR820), fluorescence imaging agent (ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots, QDs) and autophagy inhibitor (chloroquine, CQ). These PLGA/IR820/Fluorescence imaging agent/CQ co-loading nanoparticles (termed PIFC NPs) displayed photothermal effects, enhanced the stability of IR820 in vivo, and enabled QDs to have stable fluorescent signals in vitro and in vivo. The PIFC NPs with particle size around 240 nm aggregated to tumor sites through the high permeability and retention effects of solid tumors. The intracellular delivery of CQ molecules through PIFC NPs significantly attenuated the degradation of autophagic lysosomes in tumor cells and effectively inhibited the autophagy mediated repair of photothermal damaged cells. Under milder NIR irradiation conditions, PIFC NPs exhibited high antitumor effect. By regulating autophagy, PTT can be effectively sensitized, which will provide a new idea for future cancer treatment research.
