BACKGROUND: Kaixinsan (KXS) decoction is a traditional Chinese herbal formulation commonly used to treat depression. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of KXS, which is widely used, alone and in combination with other therapies, for the treatment of depression. The main objective was to assess the efficacy and safety of KXS in the treatment of depression as a single agent or in combination with other methods. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials of KXS in the treatment of depression were systematically searched from several Chinese and English databases with no language restriction. Patients in these studies met the relevant diagnostic criteria for depression. Data on HAMD, SDS, practical situations, and occurrence of side effects in the studies were extracted. Finally, the methodological quality and risk of bias of the included studies were assessed using the Jadad scale and Cochrane bias evaluation tool. RESULTS: Twelve studies with 1034 patients were included after screening. The Jadad scale and Cochrane bias evaluation tool indicated that the quality of the studies ranged from fair to good, with 41.7% categorized as good and 58.3% as poor. Egger test and funnel plots showed that the publication bias remain low. CONCLUSION: The results showed that the frequency of side effects in the control group was higher than that in the treatment group, and there was a statistically significant difference. KXS was comparable or superior to antidepressants in treating depression and has fewer side effects. The data analysis showed that effectiveness and other indicators differed significantly by geographic area and dosage form, which has implications for future clinical work.

DNA demethylase (DML) is involved in plant development and responses to biotic and abiotic stresses; however, its role in plant-herbivore interaction remains elusive. Here, we found that herbivory by the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella, rapidly induced the genome-wide DNA methylation and accumulation of DML gene transcripts in potato plants. Herbivory induction of DML transcripts was suppressed in jasmonate-deficient plants, whereas exogenous application of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) improved DML transcripts, indicating that the induction of DML transcripts by herbivory is associated with jasmonate signaling. Moreover, P. operculella larvae grew heavier on DML gene (StDML2) knockdown plants than on wild-type plants, and the decreased biosynthesis of jasmonates in the former may be responsible for this difference, since the larvae feeding on these two genotypes supplemented with MeJA showed similar growth. In addition, P. operculella adult moths preferred to oviposit on StDML2 knockdown plants than on wild-type plants, which was associated with the reduced emission of ß-caryophyllene in the former. In addition, supplementing ß-caryophyllene to these two genotypes further disrupted moths' oviposit choice preference for them. Interestingly, in StDML2 knockdown plants, hypermethylation was found at the promoter regions for the key genes StAOS and StAOC in the jasmonate biosynthetic pathway, as well as for the key gene StTPS12 in ß-caryophyllene production. Our findings suggest that knocking down StDML2 can affect herbivore defense via jasmonate signaling and defense compound production in potato plants.

OBJECTIVE: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture-related therapy in the treatment of herpes zoster (HZ) and to provide a reference for the clinical treatment of herpes zoster. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, CNKI, VIP database, Wanfang Database, and SinoMED Chinese and English databases were systematically searched for RCTs on acupuncture-related therapy for HZ until February 2023. Literature screening, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were performed independently by 2 researchers. R4.2.1 and Stata15.1 software were used for data analysis. RESULTS: A total of 26 RCTs involving 1929 HZ patients were included, and the network meta-analysis results showed that acupotomy appeared to be most effective in terms of improving VAS scores and the time of incrustation; SUCRA cumulative probability ranking showed the best efficacy of bloodletting in improving efficiency and the time of ceasing new blisters, acupuncture in improving the time of decrustation, and moxibustion in reducing the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). CONCLUSIONS: Through a comprehensive comparison of 9 different acupuncture therapies, acupotomy was the optimal treatment to improve VAS pain scores and the time of incrustation; bloodletting, acupuncture, fire needle, and moxibustion could be effective intervention measures to improve the time of ceasing new blisters and decrustation and reduce the incidence of PHN; Western medicine was closely related to adverse reactions. The conclusions need to be further verified due to the limitations of the study.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is extremely carcinogenic and can cause liver cancer in humans and animals with continued ingestion. As a natural compound, curcumin (Cur) exhibits excellent anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties with few side effects. In this study, a total of 60 male mice (6-week-olds, 15 per group). After one week of acclimatization feeding, the mice were divided into control group (Con), AFB1 group, curcumin group (Cur), and AF+Cur group. The mice were gavaged with curcumin (Cur, 100 mg/kg) and/or AFB1 (0.75 mg/kg). To identify a new therapeutic target for AFB1-induced pyroptosis, we performed proteomic profiling for curcumin alleviating liver injury caused by AFB1 to further validate the targets through volcano plot analysis, Venn analysis, heatmap analysis, correlation, cluster analysis, GO and KEGG enrichment. AFB1 exposure resulted in the loss of hepatocyte membrane, swelling of the endoplasmic reticulum, and a significant increase in transaminase (ALT and AST) contents, while curcumin greatly improved these changes. We found that differentially expressed proteins are enriched in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane and identified ITPR2 as a target of curcumin that alleviates AFB1-induced liver injury by proteomics. Furthermore, ITPR2 expression was detected by immunofluorescence, and qRT-PCR for mRNA expression of genes downstream of ITPR2 (calpain1, calpain2, caspase-12, caspase-3). ITPR2-activated endoplasmic reticulum stress-related proteins (calpain1, calpaini2, bcl-2, BAX, cl-caspase-12, cl-caspase-3), apoptosis (PARP) and pyroptosis (DFNA5) related proteins were examined by western blotting. The analysis showed that it effectively prevents AFB1-induced pyroptosis by lowering endoplasmic reticulum stress via interfering with ITPR2 and its downstream proteins (calpain1, calpain2, bcl-2, Bax) and inhibiting caspase-12/caspase-3 pathway. Conclusively, this study applied proteomic profiling to elucidate ITPR2 as a new target, which might give a new perspective on the mechanism of curcumin alleviating AFB1-induced pyroptosis.

CONTEXT: Danggui Buxue Decoction (DBD) is an effective complementary medicine in alleviating myelosuppression after chemotherapy (MAC). However, its mechanism of action is elusive. OBJECTIVE: To illustrate that regulating ß-hydroxybutyric acid (ß-OHB) metabolism and suppressing oxidative stress could be a potential mechanism of action for DBD in alleviating MAC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After HPLC quantification and dose testing (3, 6 and 10 g/kg, gavage) of DBD, Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into control, cyclophosphamide (CTX) (30 mg/kg CTX for 5 days, intraperitoneal administration) and CTX + DBD groups (6 g/kg DBD for 14 days, gavage). Blood cell counts, thigh bone histological examination, ß-OHB levels, oxidative stress indices and HDAC1 activity were tested. The biological function of ß-OHB was verified in vitro (hBMSC cells were incubated in culture mediums that contained 40 µM CTX and ß-OHB in 0, 1, 2.5, 5, 10 mM) and in vivo (MAC rat model, 3 g/kg ß-OHB for 14 days, gavage). RESULTS: Rats in the CTX + DBD group showed upregulated blood cell counts (118-243%), ß-OHB levels (495 nmol/mL in blood, 122 nmol/mg in marrow supernatant) and downregulated HDAC1 activity (59%), and oxidative stress indices (60-85%). In vitro, 5 mM ß-OHB improved hBMSC cell migration (123%) and proliferation (131%). In vivo, rats treated with 3 g/kg ß-OHB showed upregulated blood cell counts (121-182%) and downregulated HDAC1 activity (64%) and oxidative stress indices (65-83%). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: DBD, a traditional Chinese medicine, alleviates MAC by intervening in ß-OHB metabolism and oxidative stress.

OBJECTIVES: Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is one of the most common bacteria in the hospital-acquired central nervous system (CNS) infections. Central nervous system infections caused by carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRKP) are associated with significant mortality rates and high hospital costs due to limited antibiotic treatment options. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) for the treatment of CNS infections caused by CRKP. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with hospital-acquired CNS infections caused by CRKP who received treatment with CZA for ≥ 72 hours were enrolled. The primary outcome was to assess the clinical and microbiology efficacy of CZA for the treatment of CNS infections caused by CRKP. RESULTS: A high burden of comorbidity was discovered in 20 of 21 patients (95.2%). Most patients had a history of craniocerebral surgery and 17 (81.0%) of the patients were in the intensive care unit with a median APACHE II score of 16 (IQR 9-20) and SOFA score of 6 (IQR 3-7). Eighteen cases were treated by CZA-based combination therapies, while the remaining three cases were treated with CZA alone. At the end of the treatment, the overall clinical efficacy was 76.2% (16 of 21) with a bacterial clearance rate of 81.0% (17 of 21) and all-cause mortality of 23.8% (five of 21). CONCLUSION: This study showed that CZA-based combination therapy is an effective treatment option for CNS infections caused by CRKP.

Ischemia/hypoxia (I/H)-induced myocardial injury has a large burden worldwide. Hesperetin (HSP) has a cardioprotective effect, but the molecular mechanism underlying this is not clearly established. Here, we focused on the protective mechanisms of HSP against I/H-induced myocardium injury. H9c2 cardiomyocytes were challenged with CoCl2 for 22 h to imitate hypoxia after treatment groups received HSP for 4 h. The viability of H9c2 cardiomyocytes was evaluated, and cardiac function indices, reactive oxygen species, apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+ ]i ) were measured. L-type Ca2+ current (ICa-L ), myocardial contraction, and Ca2+ transients in isolated ventricular myocytes were also recorded. We found that HSP significantly increased the cell viability, and MMP while significantly decreasing cardiac impairment, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and [Ca2+ ]i caused by CoCl2 . Furthermore, HSP markedly attenuated ICa-L , myocardial contraction, and Ca2+ transients in a concentration-dependent manner. Our findings suggest a protective mechanism of HSP on I/H-induced myocardium injury by restoring oxidative balance, inhibiting apoptosis, improving mitochondrial function, and reducing Ca2+ influx via L-type Ca2+ channels (LTCCs). These data provide a new direction for HSP applied research as a LTCC inhibitor against I/H-induced myocardium injury.

Cantharidin (CTD) is a principal bioactive component of traditional Chinese medicine Mylabris used in cancer treatment. However, CTD clinical application is limited due to nephrotoxicity, and the mechanism is unknown. The present study used widely-targeted metabolomics, network pharmacology, and cell experiments to investigate the nephrotoxicity mechanism after CTD exposure. In mice exposed to CTD, serum creatinine and urea nitrogen levels increased with renal injury. Then, 74 differential metabolites were detected, including 51 up-regulated and 23 down-regulated metabolites classified as amino acids, small peptides, fatty acyl, arachidonic acid metabolite, organic acid, and nucleotides. Sixteen metabolic pathways including tyrosine, sulfur, and pyrimidine metabolism were all disrupted in the kidney. Furthermore, network pharmacology revealed that 258 metabolic targets, and pathway enrichment indicated that CTD could activate oxidative phosphorylation and oxidative stress (OS). Subsequently, HK-2 cell experiments demonstrated that CTD could reduce superoxide dismutase while increasing malondialdehyde levels. In conclusion, after CTD exposure, biometabolic processes may be disrupted with renal injury in mice, resulting in oxidative phosphorylation and OS.

Epimedium pubescens is a species of the family Berberidaceae in the basal eudicot lineage, and a main plant source for the traditional Chinese medicine "Herba Epimedii". The current study achieved a chromosome-level genome assembly of E. pubescens with the genome size of 3.34 Gb, and the genome guided discovery of a key prenyltransferase (PT) in E. pubescens. Our comparative genomic analyses confirmed the absence of Whole Genome Triplication (WGT-γ) event shared in core eudicots and further revealed the occurrence of an ancient Whole Genome Duplication (WGD) event approximately between 66 and 81 Million Years Ago (MYA). In addition, whole genome search approach was successfully applied to identify 19 potential flavonoid PT genes and an important flavonoid PT (EpPT8) was proven to be an enzyme for the biosynthesis of medicinal compounds, icaritin and its derivatives in E. pubescens. Therefore, our results not only provide a good reference genome to conduct further molecular biological studies in Epimedium genus, but also give important clues for synthetic biology and industrial production of related prenylated flavonoids in future.

In this study, we examined the protective effects of curcumin against the AFB1-induced immune response of and pathological changes in broilers. Histopathology examinations showed that at day 28, AFB1 (5 mg/kg) exposure leads to severe histological changes in the spleen, thymus and bursa of Fabricius with a decrease in the number and karyoplasmic area ratio of plasma cells. Curcumin alleviated the AFB1-induced immune organs' damage as well as the changes in plasma cells in a dose-dependent manner. RT-PCR data showed that AFB1 significantly downregulated the IL-2 and IFN-γ mRNA expression levels in the thymus, spleen and bursa of Fabricius. However, curcumin supplementation improved the AFB1-induced immune organs' damage via upregulated cytokines' expression. Intriguingly, similar trends were noticed in abnormal morphological changes and the immune response at day 35 after the withdrawal of AFB1 and curcumin from the diet, suggesting the protective effects and immunomodulatory function against AFB1 in broilers. The current study provides a scientific experimental basis for the application of curcumin as a therapeutic drug or additive in animal husbandry productive practice.

The anticancer treatment is largely affected by the microenvironment of the tumors, which not only resists the tumors to the thermo/chemo-therapy, but also promotes their growth and invasion. In this work, the angiogenesis factor is balanced by combining with the breathing hyperoxygen, for regulating the tumor microenvironment and also for relieving hypoxia and high tissue interstitial pressure, which promote drug delivery to tumor tissues by increasing the in vivo perfusion and reversing the immunosuppressive tumor. In addition, the designed multifunctional nanoparticles have a great potential for applications to the tumor dual-mode imaging including magnetic resonance (MR) and photoacoustic (PA) imaging. This work proposes a promising strategy to enhance the thermo/chemo-therapy efficacy by remodeling the tumor microenvironment, which would provide an alternative to prolong the lifetime of tumor patients.

Lipid metabolism disorders are a prominent characteristic in the pathological development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Danshen zexie decoction (DZD) is a Chinese herbal medicine that is based on zexie decoction and has an effect of regulating lipid mechanism. However, the anti-NAFLD effect and mechanism of DZD remain unclear. In this study, we observed the therapeutic effect of DZD on NAFLD rats and investigated its possible mechanisms. Sixty Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to six groups: control group, model group, Yishanfu (polyene phosphatidylcholine) group, and low, medium and high-dose DZD groups. High-fat diet (HFD) was fed to the rats to establish an NAFLD model, and each treatment group was given corresponding drugs at the same time for eight consecutive weeks. The results revealed that the obvious lipid metabolism disorder and liver injury induced by HFD were alleviated by treatment with DZD, which was verified by decreased serum TC, TG, ALT, AST, liver TC, TG, and FFA, as well as the alleviation of hepatic steatosis. The production of ROS in rats was reduced after treatment with DZD. The SOD activity and GSH content were increased with DZD treatment, while the MDA level was decreased. The administration of DZD could decrease serum IL-1ß and IL-18 contents. Moreover, DZD upregulated the expressions of Nrf2, HO-1, GCLC, and GCLM, while it suppressed the expressions of NLRP3, caspase-1, GSDMD, and GSDMD-N. In conclusion, the data showed that DZD can reduce lipid accumulation, alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation, and inhibit pyroptosis in NAFLD rats, which might be ascribed to suppression of the ROS/NLRP3/IL-1ß signaling pathway by activation of Nrf2. Overall, these results indicated that DZD is expected to be a therapeutic drug for NAFLD.

Tic disorders are neurological disorders that are prone to fluctuation and recurrence. It is important to study the factors related to disease recurrence and to subsequently provide suggestions for clinical treatment. A retrospective study was conducted to assess patients with recurrent and non-recurring tic disorders diagnosed in the Pediatric Tic Disorder Clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China, and to extract various factors-such as fetal status; medication, allergy, and family history; social and psychological factors; blood lead content; electroencephalogram (EEG); disease duration; type of tics; and disease severity-and identify factors associated with recurrence. The recurrence rate of tic disorders was approximately 45.10% in this study. The childbirth conditions, surgery/trauma, respiratory tract infection, allergy, stress, consumption of tiapride, and severity of tic disorders were factors related to and affected disease recurrence.

Liquiritigenin (Lq) offers cytoprotective effects against various cardiac injuries, but its beneficial effects on myocardial ischemic (MI) injury and the related mechanisms remain unclear. In the in vivo study, an animal model of MI was induced by intraperitoneal injection of isoproterenol (Iso, 85 mg/kg). ECG, heart rate, serum levels of CK and CK-MB, histopathological changes, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were all measured. In vitro, H9c2 cells were divided into four groups and treated for 24 hr with liquiritigenin (30 µmol/L and 100 µmol/L) followed with CoCl2 (800 µmol/L) for another 24 hr. Cell viability, apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential, and intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+ ]i ) were then assessed. The L-type Ca2+ current (ICa-L ) was detected using a patch clamp technique on isolated rat ventricular myocytes. The myocyte contraction and Ca2+ transients were measured using an IonOptix detection system. The remarkable cardiac injury and generation of intracellular ROS induced by Iso were alleviated via treatment with Lq. CoCl2 administration induced cell apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and Ca2+ overload in H9c2; Lq reduces these deleterious effects of CoCl2 . Meanwhile, Lq blocked ICa-L in a dose-dependent manner. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration of Lq was 110.87 µmol/L. Lq reversibly reduced the amplitude of cell contraction as well as the Ca2+ transients. The results show that Lq protects against MI injury by antioxidation, antiapoptosis, counteraction mitochondrial dysfunction, and inhibition of ICa-L , thus damping intracellular Ca2+ .

RATIONALE: Bear bile powder (BBP) is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and bile acids (BAs) are the main active components in BBP. Due to the scarcity of BBP resources, adulterations often occur in the market. Conventional methods to distinguish them are usually complicated and time-consuming. To enhance effectiveness and accuracy, a rapid and rough analytical method is desperately needed. METHODS: In this study, a rapid strategy using chip-based nano-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (nano-ESI-MS/MS) was established to distinguish BBP from other sources of bile powder (BP). In addition, the results were further verified by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS). RESULTS: The precision of the chip-based nano-ESI-MS/MS method was validated to be acceptable with relative standard deviation (RSD) <15%. The distinction between BBP and other sources of BP, including common adulterants of pig bile powder (PBP), cattle bile powder (CBP), sheep bile powder (SBP), and chicken bile powder (CkBP), can be observed in the spectra. By using orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), more potential m/z markers were investigated. A BAs-related m/z marker of 498.3 was discovered as a typical differential molecular ion peak and was identified as tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) and taurochenodeoxycholic acid (TCDCA) in BBP. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed strategy has simple sample pretreatment steps and significantly shortened analysis time. As an emerging technology, chip-based nano-ESI-MS not only provides a reference for the rapid distinction of adulterated Chinese medicines, but also provides some insights into the identification of other chemicals and foods.

Hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (HSOS) via exposure to pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) is with high mortality and there is no effective treatment in clinics. Bear bile powder (BBP) is a famous traditional animal drug for curing a variety of hepatobiliary diseases such as cholestasis, inflammation, and fibrosis. Here, we aim to evaluate the protective effect of BBP against HSOS induced by senecionine, a highly hepatotoxic PA compound. Our results showed that BBP treatment protected mice from senecionine-induced HSOS dose-dependently, which was evident by improved liver histology including reduced infiltration of inflammatory cells and collagen positive cells, alleviated intrahepatic hemorrhage and hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells, as well as decreased conventional serum liver function indicators. In addition, BBP treatment lowered matrix metalloproteinase 9 and pyrrole-protein adducts, two well-known markers positively associated with the severity of PA-induced HSOS. Further investigation showed that BBP treatment prevents the development of liver fibrosis by decreasing transforming growth factor beta and downstream fibrotic molecules. BBP treatment also alleviated senecionine-induced liver inflammation and lowered the pro-inflammatory cytokines, in which tauroursodeoxycholic acid played an important role. What's more, BBP treatment also decreased the accumulation of hydrophobic bile acids, such as cholic acid, taurocholic acid, glycocholic acid, as well. We concluded that BBP attenuates senecionine-induced HSOS in mice by repairing the bile acids homeostasis, preventing liver fibrosis, and alleviating liver inflammation. Our present study helps to pave the way to therapeutic approaches of the treatment of PA-induced liver injury in clinics.

Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is a rare demyelinating condition of the corpus callosum and subcortical white matter that is most commonly seen in alcoholic patients. The course of the disease varies with symptoms that range from dementia to complete coma; severe intermittent sympathetic storming with abnormal posturing is often reported in literature. It is presumably secondary to a deficiency of B complex vitamins, specifically thiamine and many patients have clinical improvement after repletion of B vitamins. We present a case of a 35-year-old man who developed MBD secondary to polysubstance misuse without history of alcohol use. His clinical course was complicated by persistent comatose state with autonomic dysfunction. After the administration of high-dose thiamine and vitamin C and E, the patient regained consciousness and was able to follow commands within 48 hours. Furthermore, this case showed recognising brain MRI findings for MBD is a crucial step in disease identification.

The coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) from the entrained-flow coal gasification unit faces the challenge of safe disposal and clean utilization in the Ningdong region, China. This study aims to provide complete and thorough understanding of the distribution features, chemical speciation, environmental impact, and leaching behavior of typical heavy metals (i.e., V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ba, and Pb) in the CGFS with different size fractions. The results show that the distribution of selected heavy metals in the CGFS has evident particle size dependence. Except for Zn, the other heavy metals in different size fractions mainly exist in chemical speciation of residual form with the ratio of 50.11-86.69 wt%. Moreover, it is found that the heavy metals in the different-sized CGFS show different RAC (risk assessment code) environmental risk levels and TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) leaching concentrations. Especially, Zn in SGFS-C and SGFS-D posed a high-risk level to the environment, while the heavy metal elements of Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, and Ba in other size fractions are classified as a medium environmental risk. In addition, the TCLP test results indicate that the leaching concentration of Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Ba, and Pb exceeds the groundwater-related regulatory limit in China. The pH-dependent leaching experiments suggest that Pb shows the amphoteric behavior, while the leaching mode of other heavy metals seems to be the cationic pattern. Furthermore, the leachability of the selected heavy metals in small-size fractions of the CGFS should be given more consideration at both acid and alkaline pH ranges. The leaching kinetic results demonstrate that the most effective mechanism to describe the leaching process of Cr, Ni, Zn, and Pb in different CGFS size fractions is the diffusion-controlled theory, which is supported by the different morphological traits of spherical mineral particles and carbon particles in the CGFS.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) are usually used as feed supplements directly or bacterial inoculants in biological feeds for animals. However, few research have reported the effects of BA and BS on fermentation characteristics and bacterial community successions of whole-plant corn silage during ensiling. If the BA and BS inoculants have positive effects on silages, then they could not only improve fermentation characteristics, but also deliver BA or BS viable cells to ruminants, which would play its probiotic effect. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of BA and BS on the fermentation, chemical characteristics, bacterial community and their metabolic pathway of whole-plant corn silage. RESULTS: Freshly chopped whole-plant corn was inoculated without or with BA and BS, respectively, and ensiled for 1, 3, 7, 14 and 60 d. Results showed that BA and BS inoculations increased lactic acid concentrations of whole-plant corn silages compared with control, and BA inoculation decreased acetic acid concentrations, whereas BS inoculation decreased fiber contents and increased crude protein (CP) content. Higher water-soluble carbohydrate contents and lower starch contents were observed in BA- and BS-inoculated silages compared with that in control. The decreased CP content and increased non-protein nitrogen content were observed in BA-inoculated silage, which was consistent with the higher amino acid metabolism abundances observed in BA-inoculated silage. In addition, it was noteworthy that BA and BS inoculations increased the metabolism of cofactors and vitamins, and decreased the relative abundances of drug resistance: antimicrobial pathways. We also found that the bacterial metabolism pathways were clearly separated into three clusters based on the ensiling times of whole-plant corn silage in the present study. There were no significant differences in bacterial community compositions among the three groups during ensiling. However, BA and BS inoculations decreased the relative abundances of undesirable bacteria such as Acetobacter and Acinetobacter. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggested that the BS strain was more suitable as silage inoculants than the BA strain in whole-plant corn silage in this study.

Background: Gynecological cancer-related lymphedema (GCRL) is a devastating condition that adversely influences function, health, and quality of life. We conducted a randomized-controlled clinical study as well as in vitro experiments to investigate the efficacy and safety of far infrared radiation (FIR) to treat lymphedema in patients having previously undergone surgery for gynecological tumors. Materials and Methods: Seventy-four women with GCRL, cancer free for 5 years or more, were randomly allocated into two treatment groups: standard of care with bandage treatment and treatment with FIR plus bandage. Variations of fluid, circumference of lymphedematous limbs, serum tumor markers (cancer antigen 125 [CA125]), inguinal-pelvic lymph nodes, vagina, lungs, and adverse reactions were assessed after 1 year. In vitro experiments examined the effects on cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis, and the cell cycle of fibroblast, A2780, SKOV-3, HELA, and Ishikawa cells. Results: The FIR+bandage group showed significantly decreased tissue fluid and reduced limb circumference (p < 0.05) in comparison with the control group at 1 year. There was no increase of serum CA125 in both groups, and no recurrence of neoplasia or lymphadenopathy was detected. No adverse reactions were recorded. In addition, no changes were detected after FIR treatment for fibroblast, A2780, SKOV-3, HELA, and Ishikawa cells in cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle. Conclusion: FIR can be used to treat patients with GCRL following gynecological cancer treatment. Following clinical and experimental studies, we confirm that FIR is an oncologically safe treatment for lymphedema in gynecological tumor patients.
