BACKGROUND: Doxorubicin (DOX) is widely used for the treatment of a variety of cancers. However, its clinical application is limited by dose-dependent cardiotoxicity. Recent findings demonstrated that autophagy inhibition and apoptosis of cardiomyocytes induced by oxidative stress dominate the pathophysiology of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC), however, there are no potential molecules targeting on these. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore whether aucubin (AU) acting on inimitable crosstalk between NRF2 and HIPK2 mediated the autophagy, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in DIC, and provide a new and alternative strategy for the treatment of DIC. METHODS AND RESULTS: We first demonstrated the protection of AU on cardiac structure and function in DIC mice manifested by increased EF and FS values, decreased serum CK-MB and LDH contents and well-aligned cardiac tissue in HE staining. Furthermore, AU alleviated DOX-induced myocardial oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, apoptosis, and autophagy flux dysregulation in mice, as measured by decreased ROS, 8-OHdG, and TUNEL-positive cells in myocardial tissue, increased SOD and decreased MDA in serum, aligned mitochondria with reduced vacuoles, and increased autophagosomes. In vitro, AU alleviated DOX-induced oxidative stress, autophagy inhibition, and apoptosis by promoting NRF2 and HIPK2 expression. We also identified crosstalk between NRF2 and HIPK2 in DIC as documented by overexpression of NRF2 or HIPK2 reversed cellular oxidative stress, autophagy blocking, and apoptosis aggravated by HIPK2 or NRF2 siRNA, respectively. Simultaneously, AU promoted the expression and nuclear localization of NRF2 protein, which was reversed by HIPK2 siRNA, and AU raised the expression of HIPK2 protein as well, which was reversed by NRF2 siRNA. Crucially, AU did not affect the antitumor activity of DOX against MCF-7 and HepG2 cells, which made up for the shortcomings of previous anti-DIC drugs. CONCLUSION: These collective results innovatively documented that AU regulated the unique crosstalk between NRF2 and HIPK2 to coordinate oxidative stress, autophagy, and apoptosis against DIC without compromising the anti-tumor effect of DOX in vitro.

In industrial-scale cultivation of microalgae, salinity stress often stimulates high-value metabolites production but decreases biomass yield. In this research, we present an extraordinary response of Arthrospira platensis to salinity stress. Specifically, we observed a significant increase in both biomass production (2.58 g L-1) and phycocyanin (PC) content (22.31%), which were enhanced by 1.26-fold and 2.62-fold, respectively, compared to the control, upon exposure to exogenous glycine betaine (GB). The biochemical analysis reveals a significant enhancement in carbonic anhydrase activity and chlorophyll a level, concurrent with reductions in carbohydrate content and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Further, transcriptomic profiling indicates a downregulation of genes associated with the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and an upregulation of genes linked to nitrogen assimilation, hinting at a rebalanced carbon/nitrogen metabolism favoring PC accumulation. This work thus presents a promising strategy for simultaneous enhancement of biomass production and PC content in A. platensis and expands our understanding of PC biosynthesis and salinity stress responses in A. platensis.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is an innovative treatment for neurological and psychological conditions. Complex IV of the mitochondrial respiratory chain can be stimulated by red light, which increases ATP synthesis. In addition, the ion channels' light absorption causes the release of Ca2+, which activates transcription factors and changes gene expression. Neuronal metabolism is improved by brain PBM therapy, which also promotes synaptogenesis and neurogenesis as well as anti-inflammatory. Its depression-treating potential is attracting attention for other conditions, including Parkinson's disease and dementia. Giving enough dosage for optimum stimulation using the transcranial PBM technique is challenging because of the rapidly increasing attenuation of light transmission in tissue. Different strategies like intranasal and intracranial light delivery systems have been proposed to overcome this restriction. The most recent preclinical and clinical data on the effectiveness of brain PBM therapy are studied in this review article.

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical neck pain (MNP) is defined as pain in the area of the neck and/or neck-shoulder provoked by body mechanics and which adversely affects physical, psychological and social function. The treatments for MNP are limited. Previous studies and clinical experience have indicated that myofascial acupuncture might be a better treatment option for MNP, but the efficacy is controversial. Therefore, our aim is to compare the efficacy of myofascial acupuncture and routine acupuncture for MNP. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study is a multicentre, prospective randomised clinical trial. Patients will be recruited from four tertiary hospitals in China. A total of 438 participants with MNP will be randomly assigned into two groups, namely the 'Sancai-Tianbu' myofascial acupuncture group and the routine acupuncture group, at a ratio of 1:1. Each group will receive the acupuncture treatment twice a week for 21 days, totalling six sessions. The primary outcome will be the Visual Analogue Scale score. The secondary outcomes will be the Neck Disability Index, the cervical range of motion and the MOS 36-Item Short Form Health Survey. The assessments will be performed at baseline (immediately after allocation), pretreatment (5 min before every treatment), post-treatment (within 10 min after every treatment), postcourse (within 1 day after the course), and at 1, 3 and 6 months after the course. All patients will be included in the intent-to-treat analysis. Repeated-measure analysis of covariance will be used to determine the effects of the intervention on the outcome measures. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval was obtained from China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation 731 Hospital, with permission number 2022-0204-01. Written informed consent will be obtained from the enrolled patients. Trial results will be disseminated in peer-reviewed publications. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2200061453.

The nervous system is the necessary condition for inducing the curative effect of acupuncture. Both the sympathetic and vagal nerve systems are widely distributed throughout the body and organically connect various systems and organs of the human body. In maintaining the coordination and unity of human physiological activities, it is in line with the holistic view and bidirectional regulation of acupuncture, and fits in with the meridian theory of "internally belonging to the Zang-fu organs and externally connecting with the limbs and joints". Acupuncture, one of the body surface stimulation therapies, can inhibit the inflammatory response via activating sympathetic/vagus nerve mediated anti-inflammatory pathways. The peripheral nerve innervating diffe-rent acupoints determines the different anti-inflammatory pathways of the autonomic nerve, and different acupuncture methods (stimulation form and stimulation amount) are important factors affecting the anti-inflammatory mechanism of the autonomic nerve. In the future, we should analyze the central integration mechanism between sympathetic nerve and vagus nerve regulated by acupuncture at the level of brain neural circuits, and clarify the "multi-target" advantage of acupuncture, so as to provide inspiration and reference for the study of neuroimmunological effects of acupuncture.

Evidence concerning PM1 exposure, maternal blood pressure (BP), and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is sparse. We evaluated the associations using 105,063 participants from a nationwide cohort. PM1 concentrations were evaluated using generalized additive model. BP was measured according to the American Heart Association recommendations. Generalized linear mixed models were used to assess the PM1-BP/HDP associations. Each 10 µg/m3 higher first-trimester PM1 was significantly associated with 1.696 mmHg and 1.056 mmHg higher first-trimester SBP and DBP, and with 11.4% higher odds for HDP, respectively. The above associations were stronger among older participants (> 35 years) or those educated longer than 17 years or those with higher household annual income (> 400,000 CNY). To conclude, first-trimester PM1 were positively associated with BP/HDP, which may be modified by maternal age, education level, and household annual income. Further research is warranted to provide more information for both health management of HDP and environmental policies enactment.

BACKGROUND: Five-phase music therapy was reported to be effective in the treatment and rehabilitation of several diseases. This study explored the effect of phase I cardiac rehabilitation combined with 5-phase music in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients after emergency percutaneous coronary intervention. METHODS: This prospective pilot study enrolled AMI patients who received percutaneous coronary intervention from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital from July 2018 to December 2019. The participants were randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio to the control, cardiac rehabilitation, and rehabilitation-music groups. The primary endpoint was the hospital anxiety and depression scale. The secondary endpoints were the myocardial infarction dimensional assessment scale, self-rating sleep status, 6-minute walk test, and left ventricular ejection fraction. RESULTS: The study included 150 AMI patients (n = 50/group). Hospital anxiety and depression scale showed significant time effects for both anxiety and depression (both P < .05), a treatment effect for depression (P = .02), and an interaction effect for anxiety (P = .02). A time effect was also observed for diet, sleep disorders, 6-minute walk test, and left ventricular ejection fraction (all P < .001). A difference among groups was observed for emotional reaction (P = .001). Interactions effects were observed for diet (P = .01) and sleep disorders (P = .03). CONCLUSION: Phase I cardiac rehabilitation combined with 5-phase music could alleviate anxiety and depression and improve sleep quality.

Five Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile actinobacterial strains designated as CPCC 205763T, CPCC 203386T, CPCC 205716T, CPCC 203406T, and CPCC 203407 were obtained from different ecosystems associated with four kinds of Chinese traditional medicinal plants. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of these five strains showed closely related to members of the genus Herbiconiux of the family Microbacteriaceae, with the highest similarities of 97.4-99.7% to the four validly named species of Herbiconiux. In the phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and the core genome, these isolates clustered into the clade of the genus Herbiconiux within the lineage of the family Microbacteriaceae. The overall genome relatedness indexes (values of ANI and dDDH) and the phenotypic properties (morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics) of these isolates, readily supported to affiliate them to the genus Herbiconiux, representing four novel species, with the isolates CPCC 203406T and CPCC 203407 being classified in the same species. For which the names Herbiconiux aconitum sp. nov. (type strain CPCC 205763T = I19A-01430T = CGMCC 1.60067T), Herbiconiux daphne sp. nov. (type strain CPCC 203386T = I10A-01569T = DSM 24546T = KCTC 19839T), Herbiconiux gentiana sp. nov. (type strain CPCC 205716T = I21A-01427T = CGMCC 1.60064T), and Herbiconiux oxytropis sp. nov. (type strain CPCC 203406T = I10A-02268T = DSM 24549T = KCTC 19840T) were proposed, respectively. In the genomes of these five strains, the putative encoding genes for amidase, endoglucanase, phosphatase, and superoxidative dismutase were retrieved, which were classified as biosynthetic genes/gene-clusters regarding plant growth-promotion (PGP) functions. The positive results from IAA-producing, cellulose-degrading and anti-oxidation experiments further approved their potential PGP bio-functions. Pangenome analysis of the genus Herbiconiux supported the polyphasic taxonomy results and confirmed their bio-function potential.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disease with limited therapeutic options. Pseudognaphalium affine (D. Don) Anderb. is a medicinal and edible plant used to treat cough, asthma, and COPD for a long time in folk medicine. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of Pseudognaphalium affine (D. Don) Anderb. extract (GAE) and investigate the possible underlying mechanism in vivo and in vitro. In vivo, the administration of GAE in a rat COPD model could significantly ameliorate lung damage and pulmonary function by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Western blot and real-time PCR results showed that GAE could suppress nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), which indicated that GAE down-regulated the NF-κB pathway. Moreover, GAE protected against tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α induced inflammatory response in BEAS-2B and inhibited the NF-κB pathway. All data suggested that GAE exhibited its anti-COPD effect by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines, which may be associated with the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Pien-Tze-Huang (PZH)-a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound-has been employed to treat various liver inflammation and tumors for over 10 decades. Interestingly, most of the pharmacological effects had been validated and explored toward liver ailment along with pro-inflammatory conditions and cancer at the cellular and molecular level to date. Aim of the study: The present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of PZH on autophagy and TGF-ß1 signaling pathways in rats with liver fibrosis and hepatic stellate cell line (HSC). Materials and methods: Male SD rats with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis were used as the animal model. Next, PZH treatment was given for 8 weeks. Afterward, the therapeutic effects of PZH were analyzed through a hepatic tissue structure by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E), Van Gieson (VG) staining, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), activity of ALT and AST by enzyme-associated immunosorbent assay as well. Subsequently, mRNA and protein expression were examined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Then, the cell vitality of PZH-treated HSC and the expression of key molecules prevailing to autophagy were studied in vitro. Meanwhile, SM16 (a novel small molecular inhibitor which inhibits TGFß-induced Smad2 phosphorylation) was employed to confirm PZH's effects on the proliferation and autophagy of HSC. Results: PZH pharmacologically exerted anti-hepatic fibrosis effects as demonstrated by protecting hepatocytes and improving hepatic function. The results revealed the reduced production of extracellular collagen by adjusting the balance of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 2, MMP9, and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP1) in PZH-treated CCl4-induced liver fibrosis. Interestingly, PZH inhibited the activation of HSC by down-regulating TGF-ß1 and phosphorylating Smad2. Furthermore, PZH down-regulated yeast Atg6 (Beclin-1) and microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3) toward suppressing HSC autophagy, and PZH exhibited similar effects to that of SM16. Conclusion: To conclude, PZH alleviated CCl4-induced liver fibrosis to reduce the production of extracellular collagen and inhibiting the activation of HSC. In addition, their pharmacological mechanisms related to autophagy and TGF-ß1/Smad2 signaling pathways were revealed for the first time.

Arctium lappa L. is one of the medicinal and food homologous plants in China, which is rich in nutrients and medicinal ingredients. The use of plant growth-promoting (PGP) endophytic bacteria is an alternative to reducing chemical fertilizers in agricultural production. The aim of this study was to analyze the diversity of endophytic bacteria in different cultivars of A. lappa L. collected from two geographical locations in China and evaluate PGP traits of the isolates and their potential PGP ability in greenhouse condition. Endophytic bacterial community was investigated by culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. Isolates were screened and investigated for multiple PGP traits, and representative strains were inoculated host seedlings to evaluate the growth promoting effect. A total of 348 endophytic bacteria were obtained and they were distributed into 4 phyla and 30 genera. In addition, high throughput sequencing revealed more abundant bacterial community, including 17 bacterial phyla and 207 genera. A high proportion of PGP traits were detected, including production of indole acetic acid, siderophore, ammonia and phosphate solubilization. Four representative strains with multiple PGP traits of the most dominant genera (Bacillus, Pantoea, Microbacterium and Pseudomonas) were further selected for host inoculation and growth promoting evaluation, and they significantly increase seedlings length, root length and fresh weight. This study demonstrated that A. lappa L. harbors abundant endophytic bacteria, and some endophytic bacteria showed good potential for the development of microbial fertilizer in the future.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) coupled with microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) were applied to extract total flavonoid compounds from spent sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) leaves. In this study, ten different NADESs were successfully synthesized for the MAE. Based on single-factor experiments, the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied, and the microwave power, extraction temperature, extraction time, and solid−liquid ratio were further evaluated in order to optimize the yields of total flavonoid compounds. Besides, the extracts were recovered by macroporous resin for the biological activity detection of flavonoid compounds. As a result, NADES-2, synthesized by choline chloride and malic acid (molar ratio 1:2), exhibited the highest extraction yield. After that, the NADES-2-based MAE process was optimized and the optimal conditions were as follows: microwave power of 470 W, extraction temperature of 54 °C, extraction time of 21 min, and solid−liquid ratio of 70 mg/mL. The extraction yield (40.21 ± 0.23 mg rutin equivalents/g sweet potato leaves) of the model validation experiment was demonstrated to be in accordance with the predicted value (40.49 mg rutin equivalents/g sweet potato leaves). In addition, flavonoid compounds were efficiently recovered from NADES-extracts with a high recovery yield (>85%) using AB-8 macroporous resin. The bioactivity experiments in vitro confirmed that total flavonoid compounds had good DPPH and O2−· radical-scavenging activity, as well as inhibitory effects on E. coli, S. aureus, E. carotovora, and B. subtilis. In conclusion, this study provides a green and efficient method to extract flavonoid compounds from spent sweet potato leaves, providing technical support for the development and utilization of sweet potato leaves' waste.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronically relapsing inflammatory disease in the intestinal tract. Current unsatisfactory treatments prompt people to seek for alternative therapies and drug candidates. Cryptotanshinone (CTS), a diterpene quinoneextractedfromthe roots ofSalviamiltiorrhiza, has recently been shown to inhibit acute colitis by reducing pro-inflammatory mediators. However, whether CTS can protect against chronic UC and its effect on T lymphocytes remain unknown. In this study, CTS (20, 60 mg/kg) showed potent inhibitory activity against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute UC, as determined by weight loss, disease activity, colon length and histology. Similarly, in a model of DSS-induced chronic colitis, the administration of CTS prevented the disease progression with longer colon length, lower histological scores, and less expression of fibrosis-related collagen and α-smooth muscle actin in the colon. CTS also reduced the proportion of CD4+IL-17A+ Th17 cells in spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes of mice with acute or chronic colitis. However, CTS at 20 mg/kg had no effect on regulatory T cells (Tregs). In addition, CTS reduced the phosphorylation of signal transduction and transcription activator 3 (STAT3) in DSS-treated colon tissue. Further study showed that CTS concentration-dependently suppressed the differentiation of naïve CD4+ T cells into Th17 cells. CTS could not inhibit the activation and proliferation of T lymphocytes or attenuate the secretion of cytokines including IL-10, IL-2, IL-6 and IFN-γ, but could inhibit the production of IL-17A and TNF-α in Con A-stimulated splenocytes. CTS suppressed IL-6-induced phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of STAT3. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that CTS alleviated acute and chronic UC by suppressing STAT3 activation and Th17 cell differentiation, suggesting that it may be a promising candidate drug for the treatment of UC.

The shortcomings are presented when the acupoints are explained in accordance with the flowing route of meridians in classroom teaching of Science of Meridians and Acupoints. Hence, it is proposed that the acupoint names should be interpreted specially for the acupoints distributed on the same meridians or adjacent ones. It is suggested to emphasize the correlation of each acupoint with its adjacent ones from the perspective of the cultural connotation of acupoint names, and then, the differences and similarities in their clinical indications can be analyzed. Eventually, a new approach to the classroom teaching of Science of Meridians and Acupoints may be provided to guide the excavation of traditional cultural connotation and establish the cultural self-confidence and professional identity.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a non-specific chronic intestinal inflammatory disease, often presenting with abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody stool, anorexia, and body loss. It is difficult to cure completely and a promising treatment is urgently needed. Natural compounds can offer promising chemical agents for treatment of diseases. Polydatin is a natural ingredient extracted from the dried rhizome of Polygonum cuspidatum, which has anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and dementia protection activities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of polydatin on IBD and explore its possible mechanism. We found that polydatin could effectively suppress the differentiation of Th17 cells in vitro, but had no effect on the differentiation of Treg cells. Polydatin significantly alleviated colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) in mice, and dramatically decreased the proportion of Th17 cells in spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes. Mechanism investigations revealed that polydatin specifically inhibited signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) phosphorylation by directly binding to STAT3, leading to Th17 cell reduction and thereby alleviating colitis. These findings provide novel insights into the anti-colitis effect of polydatin, which may be a promising drug candidate for the treatment of IBD.

Sympathetic nerve remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI) has an indispensable role in cardiac remodeling. Numerous works have shown that sympathetic nerve remodeling can be delayed by inhibition of inflammatory response. Earlier studies have shown improvement in ventricular remodeling and inhibited chronic stage neural remodeling by Yiqi Huoxue decoction (YQHX). Therefore, the current study looked at the inhibitory effect of YQHX prescription on proinflammatory mediators and macrophages and the effect on neural remodeling at 3 and 7 days after MI. YQHX inhibited the expression of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) proteins and macrophage infiltration within 7 days after myocardial infarction. YQHX could decrease Th-positive nerve fiber density in the area around infarction and reduce the expression of growth-associated protein 43 (GAP43), nerve growth factor (NGF), and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) proteins, which was associated with the remodeling of sympathetic nerves. Thus, the nerve remodeling inhibition after MI due to YQHX may be through its anti-inflammatory action. These data provide direct evidence for the potential application of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the remodeling of sympathetic nerves after MI.

Stenotrophomonas spp. have primarily been reported as non-pathogenic, plant-probiotic bacteria, despite the presence of some opportunistic human pathogens in the genus. Here, three Gram-stain negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria, designated as strains CPCC 101365T, CPCC 101269T, and CPCC 101426 were isolated from surface-sterilized medicinal plant roots of a mulberry plant in Chuxiong of the Yunnan Province, freshwater from Erhai Lake in the Yunnan Province, and sandy soils in the Badain Jaran desert in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, respectively. The 16S rRNA gene sequences analysis of these isolates in comparison with sequences from the GenBank database indicated that they belong to the genus Stenotrophomonas, with nucleotide similarities of 96.52-99.92% to identified Stenotrophomonas members. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene and genome sequences confirmed that the isolates are members of the genus Stenotrophomonas. Values for genomic average nucleotide identity (ANI; <95%) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH; < 70%) indicated that strains CPCC 101365T and CPCC 101269T were well-differentiated from validly described Stenotrophomonas species, while strain CPCC 101426 shared high ANI (97.7%) and dDDH (78.3%) identity with its closest phylogenetic neighbor, Stenotrophomonas koreensis JCM 13256T. The three genomes were approximately 3.1-4.0 Mbp in size and their G + C content ranged in 66.2-70.2%, with values slightly differing between CPCC 101365T (3.4 Mbp; 70.2%), CPCC 101269T (4.0 Mbp; 66.4%), and CPCC 101426 (3.1 Mbp; 66.2%). Genes encoding enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and siderophores were identified in the genomes of the three isolates, suggesting that these strains might serve roles as plant-growth promoting microorganisms. The polar lipid fractions of the three isolates primarily comprised diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). The predominant cellular fatty acid was iso-C15: 0, with moderate amounts of antesio-C15: 0, iso-C11: 0, iso C17: 1 É·9c/C16: 0 10-methyl, iso-C14: 0, and C16: 1 É·7c/C16: 1 É·6c. These results indicated that polyphasic characteristics of strains CPCC 101365T and CPCC 101269T differed from other identified Stenotrophomonas species and that strain CPCC 101426 was affiliated with the species Stenotrophomonas koreensis. Accordingly, two novel species of the genus Stenotrophomonas were consequently proposed, corresponding to Stenotrophomonas mori sp. nov. (type strain CPCC 101365T = DY006T = KCTC 82900T) and Stenotrophomonas lacuserhaii sp. nov. (type strain CPCC 101269T = K32T = KCTC 82901T). Highlights: Members of the genus Stenotrophomonas, and particularly Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, are opportunistic human pathogens, but not enough research has evaluated the identification of environmental Stenotrophomonas spp. However, most Stenotrophomonas spp. serves as plant-probiotic bacteria.In this study, we obtained and characterized three Stenotrophomonas strains from different ecosystems. Based on phenotypic differences, chemotaxonomic properties, ANI and dDDH identity values, and phylogenetic analyses, two novel Stenotrophomonas species are proposed for the strains identified here. The encoding genes related to plant-growth promotion in the genomes of the newly recovered Stenotrophomonas spp. were retrieved. Follow-on experiments confirmed that these strains produced the important plant hormone IAA. Thus, these Stenotrophomonas spp. could considerably contribute to shaping and maintaining ecological stability in plant-associated environments, particularly while acting as plant-probiotic microorganisms.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative paralytic ileus prolongs hospitalization duration, increases medical expenses, and is even associated with postoperative mortality; however, effective prevention of postoperative paralytic ileus is not yet available. This trial aimed to assess the preventative effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation applied in the lower limbs on postoperative paralytic ileus incidence after colorectal surgery. METHODS: After ethics approval and written informed consent, 610 patients from 10 hospitals who were scheduled for colorectal surgery between May 2018 and September 2019 were enrolled. Patients were randomly allocated into the transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (stimulated on bilateral Zusanli, Shangjuxu, and Sanyinjiao acupoints in lower limbs for 30 minutes each time, total 4 times) or sham (without currents delivered) group with 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome was postoperative paralytic ileus incidence, defined as no flatus for >72 hours after surgery. RESULTS: Compared to the sham treatment, transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation lowered the postoperative paralytic ileus incidence by 8.7% (32.3% vs 41.0%, P = .026) and decreased the risk of postoperative paralytic ileus by 32% (OR, 0.68; P = .029). Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation also shortened the recovery time to flatus, defecation, normal diet, and bowel sounds. Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation treatment significantly increased median serum acetylcholine by 55% (P = .007) and interleukin-10 by 88% (P < .001), but decreased interleukin-6 by 47% (P < .001) and inducible nitric oxide synthase by 42% (P = .002) at 72 hours postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation attenuated the postoperative paralytic ileus incidence and enhanced gastrointestinal functional recovery, which may be associated with increasing parasympathetic nerve tone and its anti-inflammatory actions.

Myocardial infarction can lead to ventricular remodeling and arrhythmia, which is closely related to nerve remodeling. Our previous study found that Yiqi Huoxue decoction (YQHX) can improve ventricular remodeling and reduce myocardial damage. Therefore, in this study, we observed the effect of YQHX on cardiac neural remodeling and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and its possible mechanism. This research is composed of two parts: animal and H9c2 cells experiments. The animal model of acute myocardial infarction was established by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. H9c2 cells were placed in 94% N2, 5% CO2, and 1% O2 hypoxic environment for 12 hours to replicate the hypoglycemic hypoxia model. The experimental results showed that, compared with the MI group, YQHX can significantly improve heart function after myocardial infarction and reduce nerve remodeling and myocardial hypertrophy. Pathological structure observation demonstrated reducing myocardial tissue damage and decreasing of cell cross-sectional area, diameter, and circumference. The positive rate of TH declined apparently, and the sympathetic nerve density was lower than that of the MI group. After YQHX was given for 28 days, the proneural remodeling factors TH, NGF, and GAP43 in the marginal zone of infarction and stellate ganglion decreased obviously while the inhibitory nerve remodeling factor Sema-3A increased. The myocardial hypertrophic protein ANP and ß-MHC were also significantly inhibited with p-ERK1/2 protein expression level prominently reduced. There was no difference between the YQHX group and the Meto group. After myocardial infarction, nerve remodeling was seen in the marginal area of infarction and stellate ganglion, and the neuropeptides released by which promoted myocardial hypertrophy. The mechanism may be related to the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. YQHX could regulate the ERK1/2 signaling pathway, inhibit the release of nerve remodeling factors and myocardial hypertrophy protein to reduce nerve remodeling, and relieve myocardial hypertrophy.
