Algal blooms in lakes have been a challenging environmental issue globally under the dual influence of human activity and climate change. Considerable progress has been made in the study of phytoplankton dynamics in lakes; The long-term in situ evolution of dominant bloom-forming cyanobacteria in meso-eutrophic plateau lakes, however, lacks systematic research. Here, the monthly parameters from 12 sampling sites during the period of 1997-2022 were utilized to investigate the underlying mechanisms driving the superiority of bloom-forming cyanobacteria in Erhai, a representative meso-eutrophic plateau lake. The findings indicate that global warming will intensify the risk of cynaobacteria blooms, prolong Microcystis blooms in autumn to winter or even into the following year, and increase the superiority of filamentous Planktothrix and Cylindrospermum in summer and autumn. High RUETN (1.52 Biomass/TN, 0.95-3.04 times higher than other species) under N limitation (TN < 0.5 mg/L, TN/TP < 22.6) in the meso-eutrophic Lake Erhai facilitates the superiority of Dolichospermum. High RUETP (43.8 Biomass/TP, 2.1-10.2 times higher than others) in TP of 0.03-0.05 mg/L promotes the superiority of Planktothrix and Cylindrospermum. We provided a novel insight into the formation of Planktothrix and Cylindrospermum superiority in meso-eutrophic plateau lake with low TP (0.005-0.07 mg/L), which is mainly influenced by warming, high RUETP and their vertical migration characteristics. Therefore, we posit that although the obvious improvement of lake water quality is not directly proportional to the control efficacy of cyanobacterial blooms, the evolutionary shift in cyanobacteria population structure from Microcystis, which thrives under high nitrogen and phosphorus conditions, to filamentous cyanobacteria adapted to low nitrogen and phosphorus levels may serve as a significant indicator of water quality amelioration. Therefore, we suggest that the risk of filamentous cyanobacteria blooms in the meso-eutrophic plateau lake should be given attention, particularly in light of improving water quality and global warming, to ensure drinking water safety.

Objective: To explore the application of four-dimensional pelvic floor ultrasound in the diagnosis of postpartum pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) and evaluation of curative effect. Methods: A total of 100 patients with postpartum PFD undergoing vaginal delivery in the hospital were enrolled as the research objects between January 2020 and January 2023. A total of 100 postpartum women with good pelvic floor muscle function during the same period were enrolled as a control group. Both groups underwent four-dimensional pelvic floor ultrasound detection. The bladder neck descent (BND), retrovesical angle (RVA), urethral tilt angle (UTA), urethral rotation angle (ROT), levator ani thickness under rest state (LATr), levator ani thickness under Valsalva state (LATs), levator ani hiatus area under rest state (LHAr) and levator ani hiatus area under Valsalva state (LHAs) in both groups were compared. The patients in the study group were given Kegel training for pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation exercise and bio-feedback electrical stimulation. According to the clinical curative effect, patients in the study group were divided into a recovery group (n=87) and a non-recovery group (n=13). The value of four-dimensional pelvic floor ultrasound in the diagnosis of PFD and evaluation of curative effect was analyzed. Results: In the observation group, BND, RVA, UTA, ROT, LHAr, and LHAs were higher, while LATr and LATs were lower compared to the control group. (P < .05). The results of ROC curves analysis showed that the AUC of BND combined with RVA, UTA, ROT, LATr, LATs, LHAr, and LHAs in the diagnosis of PFD was 0.818, greater than that of the single index (0.728, 0.705, 0.680, 0.715, 0.677, 0.696, 0.719, 0.654; P < .05). BND, RVA, UTA, ROT, LHAr, and LHAs in the non-recovery group were higher than those in the recovery group, while LATr and LATs were lower than those in the recovery group (P < .05). The results of ROC curves analysis showed that the Area Under the Curve (AUC)of BND combined with RVA, UTA, ROT, LATr, LATs, LHAr, and LHAs for predicting the curative effect were 0.804, greater than that of a single index (0.725, 0.653, 0.651, 0.744, 0.733, 0.720, 0.661, 0.718; P < .05). Conclusion: Four-dimensional pelvic floor ultrasound can be applied to intuitively evaluate the structure and function of postpartum pelvic floor tissues, which can provide a reliable basis for the diagnosis of postpartum PFD and evaluation of curative effect.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular remodeling after acute anterior wall ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (AAMI) is an important factor in occurrence of heart failure which additionally results in poor prognosis. Therefore, the treatment of ventricular remodeling needs to be further optimized. Compound Danshen Dripping Pills (CDDP), a traditional Chinese medicine, exerts a protective effect on microcirculatory disturbance caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury and attenuates ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction. OBJECTIVE: This study is designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CDDP in improving ventricular remodeling and cardiac function after AAMI on a larger scale. METHODS: This study is a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial. The total of 268 patients with AAMI after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) will be randomly assigned 1:1 to the CDDP group (n=134) and control group (n=134) with a follow-up of 48 weeks. Both groups will be treated with standard therapy of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), with the CDDP group administrating 20 tablets of CDDP before pPCI and 10 tablets 3 times daily after pPCI, and the control group treated with a placebo simultaneously. The primary endpoint is 48-week echocardiographic outcomes including left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular end-diastolic volume index (LVEDVI), and left ventricular end-systolic volume index (LVESVI). The secondary endpoint includes the change in N terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level, arrhythmias, and cardiovascular events (death, cardiac arrest, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, rehospitalization due to heart failure or angina pectoris, deterioration of cardiac function, and stroke). Investigators and patients are both blinded to the allocated treatment. DISCUSSION: This prospective study will investigate the efficacy and safety of CDDP in improving ventricular remodeling and cardiac function in patients undergoing pPCI for a first AAMI. Patients in the CDDP group will be compared with those in the control group. If certified to be effective, CDDP treatment in AAMI will probably be advised on a larger scale. Effects of climate change and nutrient load caused by human activities on lake phytoplankton blooms have attracted much attention globally. However, their roles and synergistic effects on phytoplankton biomass and community historical succession are not well understood, especially for meso-eutrophic plateau lakes. In this study, a multi-year (1997-2022) monthly dataset including hydro-chemical and meteorological indicators of the meso-eutrophic plateau lake Erhai in China, was used to explore the contributions of climate change and nutrients on phytoplankton biomass variation and community succession. Phytoplankton biomass increased from 1997 to 2006, slowly decreased from 2006 to 2015, then increased again from 2015 to 2022, according to a generalised additive model (GAM). Alongside warming, nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter are key drivers of long-term interannual variation in phytoplankton biomass and historical succession of the phytoplankton community. The extensive blooms in recent years were strongly associated with both organic matter accumulation and global warming. Phytoplankton biomass in northern and southern districts was greater than in central areas, with Cyanophyta and Pyrrophyta dominating in the north and Chlorophyta prevalent in the south. Since 2015, phytoplankton diversity has increased significantly, and biomass has declined in the southern district but increased markedly in the northern district. Spatial heterogeneity was caused by the spatial distribution of nutrients and the buoyancy regulation capacity of cyanobacteria. The results demonstrate that bloom mitigation responds strongly to nitrogen and phosphorus control in meso-eutrophic lakes, therefore preventing and controlling blooms through nitrogen and phosphorus reduction is still an effective measure. Given the accumulation of organic matter in recent years, synergistic control of organic matter and total nitrogen and phosphorus could effectively reduce the risk of cyanobacterial and dinoflagellate blooms.

Polydopamine (PDA)-based Fenton agents attract increasing attention in tumor photothermal-enhanced chemodynamic therapy (CDT) due to their good biocompatibility and excellent loading capacity. However, PDA tends to eliminate the Fenton reaction-generated hydroxyl radical (∙OH) by its strong reducibility, which is an intractable hinder to the efficacy of CDT that need to be solved. Herein, a kind of mesoporous PDA-gold-manganese dioxide (MPDA-Au-MnO2, MPAM) nanoplatform was constructed for photothermal-enhanced CDT against tumor through the reducibility weakening strategy. The reducibility of original MPDA is effectively weakened by the oxidation role of HAuCl4 and KMnO4 during the preparation process, reducing the ∙OH scavenging ability of MPDA and benefiting the production of ∙OH. The MnO2 shell could react with GSH to release Mn2+, acting as the Fenton-like agent to generate ∙OH. The exposed Au NPs can further deplete GSH through the Au-S bond interaction. MPDA acts as the photothermal agent to generate hyperthermia under laser irradiation. MPAM shows excellent intracellular GSH scavenging ability and enhanced ∙OH production ability. After intravenous injection, MPAM can significantly suppress the growth of tumors under laser irradiation, meanwhile showing good biosafety. The developed MPDA-based nanoplatform can not only display good potential in further tumor treatments but also provide meaningful enlightenment for developing high-performance PDA or MPDA-based nanoplatforms in CDT-related applications.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is a promising hydroxyl radical (•OH)-mediated tumor therapeutic method with desirable tumor specificity and minimal side effects. However, the efficiency of CDT is restricted by the pH condition, insufficient H2O2 level, and overexpressed reductive glutathione (GSH), making it challenging to solve these problems simultaneously to improve the efficacy of CDT. Herein, a kind of polyvinylpyrrolidone-stabilized, sorafenib-loaded copper peroxide (CuO2-PVP-SRF) nanoparticle (NPs) was designed and developed for enhanced CDT against tumor cells through the synergetic pH-independent Fenton-like, H2O2 self-supplying, and GSH depletion strategy. The prepared CuO2-PVP-SRF NPs can be uptaken by 4T1 cells to specifically release Cu2+, H2O2, and SRF under acidic conditions. The intracellular GSH can be depleted by SRF-induced system xc- dysfunction and Cu2+-participated redox reaction, causing the inactivation of GPX4 and generating Cu+. A great amount of •OH was produced in this reducing capacity-disrupted condition by the Cu+-mediated Fenton-like reaction, causing cell apoptosis and lipid hydroperoxide accumulation-induced ferroptosis. They display an excellent 4T1 cell killing outcome through the improved •OH production capacity. The CuO2-PVP-SRF NPs display elevated therapeutic efficiency of CDT and show good promise in further tumor treatment applications.

Herbal/botanical monograph, first emerging abroad, includes the scientific conclusions on safety and effectiveness of herbal medicine/botanical medicine, as it is often compiled by drug regulatory authorities. It is designed to unify the related technologies in this field and evaluation standards for review. Thus, herbal/botanical monograph is vital for the internationalization of Chinese medicine and being inscribed into the herbal/botanical monograph of target country is the first step for drug registration there. At the moment, there are few domestic studies on international herbal/botanical monographs, let alone the importance of the monographs in international registration of Chinese medicine preparations. This study first described international monographs on herbal/botanical medicine, then discussed the similarities and differences between international monographs and Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and finally analyzed the significance and value of the monographs in the international registration of Chinese medicine. On this basis, this study underscored the research on herbal/botanical monographs of key candidate countries for Chinese medicine registration, with a view to enhancing international recognition and laying the foundation for international registration and related policy formulation.

A series of pleuromutilin analogs with a substituted 1,2,4-triazole were designed, synthesized and assessed for their in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity. Initially, the MIC of the synthesized derivatives against five strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA ATCC 43300, S. aureus ATCC 29213, clinical isolation of S. aureus AD3, S. aureus 144 and S. aureus SA17) were tested by the broth dilution method. Compounds 30a, 31b and 32a were the most active antibacterial agents in vitro against MRSA (MIC = 0.0625 µg/mL). The results of the time-kill curves showed that compounds 30a and 32a could reduce the amount of MRSA in vitro quickly (-7.70 log10 CFU/mL and -7.10 log10 CFU/mL reduction). In the experiment to further evaluate the in vivo antibacterial activity of compound 30a against MRSA, compound 30a (-1.71 log10 CFU/g) was effective in reducing MRSA load in thigh infected mice. Compound 30a (survival rate was 50%) displayed superior in vivo efficacy to that of tiamulin (survival rate was 30%) in the mouse systemic model. The results of further pharmacokinetic studies on compound 30a showed that the half-life (t1/2), clearance rate (Cl) and the area under the plasma concentration time curve (AUC0→∞) of compound 30a were 0.37 h, 5.43 L/h/kg and 1.84 µg h/mL, respectively. After affinity measurement by surface plasmon resonance (SPR), compound 30a exhibited high affinity with the 50S ribosome, with KD value of 1.95 × 10-6 M. Furthermore, the results of molecular docking studies revealed that compound 30a was successfully localized inside the binding pocket of 50S ribosomal subunit (ΔGb = -9.40 kcal/mol). Meanwhile, most of these compounds had no significant inhibitory effect on RAW 264.7 cells and 16HBE cells at the concentration of 8 µg/mL. The obtained outcomes showed that compound 30a could be utilized as an encouraging perspective in the development of a new therapeutic candidate for bacterial infection.

Most plane warts are recalcitrant to treatment. Both cryotherapy and local hyperthermia have been applied to treat plane warts. However, no direct comparative study on their respective efficacy and safety has ever been performed. To assess the efficacy and safety of local hyperthermia at 43 ± 1°C versus liquid nitrogen cryotherapy for plane warts. Sequential patients with plane warts entered the study, either receiving cryotherapy or local hyperthermia therapy at the discretion of the patients and the recommendations of consultants. Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen was delivered in two sessions 2 weeks apart, while local hyperthermia was delivered on three consecutive days, plus two similar treatments 10 ± 3 days later. The temperature over the treated skin surface was set at 43 ± 1°C for 30 min in each session. The primary outcome was the clearance rates of the lesions 6 months after treatment. Among the 194 participants enrolled, 183 were included in the analysis at 6 months. Local hyperthermia and cryotherapy achieved clearance rates of 35.56% (48/135) and 31.25% (15/48), respectively (p = 0.724); recurrence rates of 16.67% (8/48) and 53.33% (8/15) (p = 0.01); and adverse events rates of 20.74% (28/135) and 83.33% (40/48), respectively (p < 0.001). Cryotherapy had a higher pain score (p < 0.001) and a longer healing time (p < 0.001). Local hyperthermia at 43°C and cryotherapy had similar efficacy for plane warts. Local hyperthermia had a safer profile than cryotherapy but it required more treatment visits during a treatment course. More patients preferred local hyperthermia due to its treatment friendly nature.

Here, the effect of high-pressure conditions (0.1-400 MPa) on the water-loss, texture, gel strength, color, dynamic rheological property, and water migration of pork batters containing 0.1% (W/W) Artemisia sphaerocephala krasch gum (PB-AG) is studied. Results indicated that the cooking yield, water-holding capacity, texture, gel strength, L* values, and G' values increased with the increase in pressure (0.1-300 MPa) (p < 0.05). Dynamic rheological results (G') revealed that the thermal gelling ability of the PB-AG gel gradually increased with pressure (0.1-300 MPa). The minimum of T22 content was observed and the proportion of immobilized water decreased at 300 MPa by low-filed nuclear magnetic resonance. However, excessive high-pressure processing treatments (400 MPa) resulted in lower gel strength, WHC, texture, and G'. The scanning electron microscopy results shown that a denser network structure with small cavities was observed at 300 MPa. Therefore, moderate pressure treatment (≤300 MPa) may improve gelation properties of PB-AG gel, while excessive pressure treatment (400 MPa) may weaken the gelation properties. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: High-pressure processing combining Artemisia sphaerocephala krasch gum could enhance the gelation properties of pork batters. To do so, establishing knowledge on gelation properties of pork batters with Artemisia sphaerocephala krasch gum at different pressure levels treatment would be of paramount importance, because this contributes furnishing engineering data pertinent to the technical progress for the processing of emulsion-type meat with high quality.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new infectious disease associated with high mortality, and traditional Chinese medicine decoctions (TCMDs) have been widely used for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 in China; however, the impact of these decoctions on severe and critical COVID-19-related mortality has not been evaluated. Therefore, we aimed to address this gap. In this retrospective cohort study, we included inpatients diagnosed with severe/critical COVID-19 at the Tongren Hospital of Wuhan University and grouped them depending on the recipience of TCMDs (TCMD and non-TCMD groups). We conducted a propensity score-matched analysis to adjust the imbalanced variables and treatments and used logistic regression methods to explore the risk factors associated with in-hospital death. Among 282 patients with COVID-19 who were discharged or died, 186 patients (66.0%) received TCMD treatment (TCMD cohort) and 96 (34.0%) did not (non-TCMD cohort). After propensity score matching at a 1:1 ratio, 94 TCMD users were matched to 94 non-users, and there were no significant differences in baseline clinical variables between the two groups of patients. The all-cause mortality was significantly lower in the TCMD group than in the non-TCMD group, and this trend remained valid even after matching (21.3% [20/94] vs. 39.4% [37/94]). Multivariable logistic regression model showed that disease severity (odds ratio: 0.010; 95% CI: 0.003, 0.037; [Formula: see text]¡ 0.001) was associated with increased odds of death and that TCMD treatment significantly decreased the odds of in-hospital death (odds ratio: 0.115; 95% CI: 0.035, 0.383; [Formula: see text]¡ 0.001), which was related to the duration of TCMD treatment. Our findings show that TCMD treatment may reduce the mortality in patients with severe/critical COVID-19.

PURPOSE: To investigate the role of P2X7 receptor (P2X7r) in osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs). METHODS: hPDLSCs were isolated from the premolars collected in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guiyang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and divided into four groups. Group A was cultured in conventional medium, group B was cultured in osteogenic induction medium, group C was cultured in osteogenic induction medium + 100 nmol/L adenosine triphosphate (ATP) solution, and group D was cultured in osteogenic induction medium + 100 nmol/L P2X7 receptor specific antagonist KN-62. After 7 days, alizarin red staining was used to observe the osteogenic effect of hPDLSCs in each group. The mRNA expression of osteocalcin (OCN), RUNX2 and P2X7r in hPDLSCs was detected by real-time PCR reaction (RT-PCR). The data were processed by SPSS 22.0 software package. RESULTS: Alisarin red staining showed that the morphology of hPDLSCs cells in group B and group C was significantly changed. The pale calcified nodules in group C were significantly more than those in group B, while very few calcified nodules were found in group A and group D. The mRNA expression of OCN, RUNX2 and P2X7r in hPDLSCs were the highest in group C, followed by group B(P<0.05), and no difference was found between group A and group D(P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: P2X7 receptor can promote osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells after being activated by ATP, which may provide a new direction for clinical treatment of periodontitis.

Tea is an economically important plant characterized by a large genome, high heterozygosity, and high species diversity. In this study, we assemble a 3.26-Gb high-quality chromosome-scale genome for the 'Longjing 43' cultivar of Camellia sinensis var. sinensis. Genomic resequencing of 139 tea accessions from around the world is used to investigate the evolution and phylogenetic relationships of tea accessions. We find that hybridization has increased the heterozygosity and wide-ranging gene flow among tea populations with the spread of tea cultivation. Population genetic and transcriptomic analyses reveal that during domestication, selection for disease resistance and flavor in C. sinensis var. sinensis populations has been stronger than that in C. sinensis var. assamica populations. This study provides resources for marker-assisted breeding of tea and sets the foundation for further research on tea genetics and evolution.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of liraglutide on the body weight set point (BWSP) in diet-induced obese rats and to determine the relationship between BWSP and hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) microglial activation. METHODS: Diet-induced obesity (DIO) rats were divided into three groups: continuous high-fat diet (HFD) plus saline, HFD with liraglutide, and HFD with liraglutide pair feeding. Body weight, BWSP, inflammatory cytokines, suppressor of cytokine signaling 3, orexigenic/anorexigenic proteins, apoptosis, and microglia in the ARC were assessed. The effect of liraglutide on the Notch-1 signaling pathway and its relationships with  nuclear factor-κB and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase were also investigated in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced microglia activation model. RESULTS: Liraglutide reduced BWSP; reversed adverse changes in hypothalamic inflammation, suppressor of cytokine signaling 3, and apoptosis; and diminished microgliosis in DIO rats. The BWSP showed a linear correlation with ARC microglial density. Liraglutide inhibited LPS-induced M1 microglial polarization and promoted microglial polarization to the M2 phenotype, diminishing inflammatory cytokine expression. Liraglutide inhibited Notch-1 signaling pathway activation and decreased nuclear factor-κB and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway activation in LPS-stimulated microglia. CONCLUSIONS: Liraglutide can reduce BWSP in DIO rats. There is a linear correlation between hypothalamic microgliosis and BWSP. Liraglutide reduces excessive microglial activation and inflammation, which may contribute to BWSP reduction.

Plumbagin (PLB), an alkaloid obtained from the roots of the plants of Plumbago genus, is an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4). This study aimed to investigate the beneficial effect of PLB against oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGDR)-induced neuroinjury in human SH-SY5Y neuronal cultures. Our results showed that OGD/R stimulated NOX4 protein expression and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in SH-SY5Y cells, whereas increased 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) and malondialdehyde (MDA) production, resulting in the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. And PLB pretreatment reduced the ROS production by regulating the expression of NOX4 and downregulated NF-κB signaling which was induced by OGDR. Furthermore, PLB inhibited OGDR induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation but not PARP1. Overall, PLB improved OGDR induced neuroinjury by inhibiting NOX4-derived ROS-activated NLRP3 inflammasome.

For the treatment of diseases, especially chronic diseases, traditional natural drugs have more effective therapeutic advantages because of their multi-target and multi-channel characteristics. Among many traditional natural medicines, resins frankincense and myrrh have been proven to be effective in the treatment of inflammation and cancer. In the West, frankincense and myrrh have been used as incense in religious and cultural ceremonies since ancient times; in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, they are used mainly for the treatment of chronic diseases. The main chemical constituents of frankincense and myrrh are terpenoids and essential oils. Their common pharmacological effects are anti-inflammatory and anticancer. More interestingly, in traditional Chinese medicine, frankincense and myrrh have been combined as drug pairs in the same prescription for thousands of years, and their combination has a better therapeutic effect on diseases than a single drug. After the combination of frankincense and myrrh forms a blend, a series of changes take place in their chemical composition, such as the increase or decrease of the main active ingredients, the disappearance of native chemical components, and the emergence of new chemical components. At the same time, the pharmacological effects of the combination seem magically powerful, such as synergistic anti-inflammation, synergistic anticancer, synergistic analgesic, synergistic antibacterial, synergistic blood-activation, and so on. In this review, we summarize the latest research on the main chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of these two natural resins, along with chemical and pharmacological studies on the combination of the two.

The effect of ammonia-nitrogen in water on phosphorus removal by magnesium modified biochar (MBC) was developed to increase the utilization of wetland plants. The crystal structures were measured by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). MBC was prepared using reed as the biomass feedstock, which was modified with magnesium chloride. The raw biochar (BC) was prepared as a control. The removal of phosphate from solution using four different methods, i.e. MBC, BC, BC, and MgCl2 solutions (BC+Mg2+) and MgCl2 solutions (Mg2+), under different nitrogen to phosphorus molar ratios and initial phosphorus concentrations was investigated in batch experiments. The results demonstrated that the phosphorus removal efficiency of the four treatment methods, which followed the order of MBC>>BC+Mg2+≈Mg2+>BC. NH4+ in the solution, promoted phosphorus removal by MBC. In addition, the larger the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus and the higher the initial phosphorus concentration, the stronger the phosphorus removal capacity of MBC was. In the three treatments with MBC, BC+Mg2+, and Mg2+, the XRD analysis showed that NH4+ reacted with Mg2+ and PO43- in the solution to form MgNH4PO4·6H2O at N:P=5 or 10, promoting the removal of phosphorus. For recycling purposes, waste biomass from constructed wetlands could be used to produce MBC and treat polluted water rich in ammonium and phosphate. Moreover, the ammonium-nitrogen promotes the phosphate removal by MBC. The results from this study provide a new theoretical basis and data support for the treatment of water eutrophication.

Development of effective antimicrobial agents continues to be a great challenge, particularly due to the increasing resistance of superbugs and frequent hospital breakouts. There is an urgent need for more potent and safer antibiotics with novel scaffolds. As historically many commercial drugs were derived from natural products, discovery of antimicrobial agents from complex natural product structures still holds a great promise. Herein, we report the total synthesis of natural albomycins δ1 (1a), δ2 (1b), and ε (1c), which validates the structures of these peptidylnucleoside compounds and allows for synthetic access to bioactive albomycin analogs. The efficient synthesis of albomycins enables extensive evaluations of these natural products against model bacteria and clinical pathogens. Albomycin δ2 has the potential to be developed into an antibacterial drug to treat Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus infections.

Triphala is a well-known prescription in Indian Ayurveda and TCM medicine for its great effect on gingivitis and hyperlipidemia. However, its solution is unstable for the containing of excessive polyphenol, leading to the production of sediment in the short term and the decrease of efficacy. Based on the analysis of sediment formation, a novel control strategy is proposed. To conduct the analysis, the sediment formation was recorded for a consecutive five days. The changes in the composition of the supernatant and the sediment were studied by the HPLC profile analysis. The main components of the sediment were identified as corilagin, ellagic acid and gallic acid, and the amount of ellagic acid sediment increased with the storage time. Then, with a series of pH status adjustments of the Triphala solution, the physical and chemical stabilities were acquired by Turbiscan and HPLC respectively. The results showed that as the pH value increased, so did the physical stability, but the particle size and TSI of the association decreased. While the fingerprint of chemical profile similarity decreased, so did the chemical stability. Combining physical and chemical stability parameters, an equilibrium point was found out. When the pH value was adjusted to 5.0, both the physical and chemical stabilities were better: the verification test showed that the sedimentation inhibition rates on the 3rd, 5th,10th and15th days were 41%, 55%, 41%, and 23%, respectively. This manuscript provided a new control strategy that will pique pharmaceutical and food development engineers' interest and trigger research ideas controlling the quality of decoction.

The fruit (aril) of the endangered genus Taxus plants is an abandoned herbal resource. Traditionally, people enthusiastically focus on its bark, its renewable, tremendous arils fall into the soil with seeds after they are mature. The present research investigated the fruit of two species from the genus Taxus, Taxus chinensis var. mairei, and Taxus media, with regards to their antioxidant and antihyperglycaemic activities, safety, and bioactive constituents. Results showed that T. chinensis var. mairei and T. media both had certain biological activities with T. chinensis var. mairei better in antioxidant activity and T. media better in antihyperglycaemic activity. Correlation analysis revealed that the differences in bioactivities depended on content of their mainly chemical components. The mice acute oral toxicity test indicated that the methanol extracts of the two biotypes of Taxus were safe. And nineteen compounds were tentatively assigned from the two varieties, via tandem mass spectrometry using a LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS instrument, which included phenols, flavonoids, and terpenes. These results indicate a possible application of Taxus fruit extracts in various fields like in food industry, however, this still needs further investigations.
