ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Leonurus japonicus Houtt. (Labiatae), commonly known as Chinese motherwort, is a herbaceous flowering plant that is native to Asia. It is widely acknowledged in traditional medicine for its diuretic, hypoglycemic, antiepileptic properties and neuroprotection. Currently, Leonurus japonicus (Leo) is included in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recognizes Leo for its myriad pharmacological attributes, but its efficacy against ICH-induced neuronal apoptosis is unclear. AIMS OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to identify the potential targets and regulatory mechanisms of Leo in alleviating neuronal apoptosis after ICH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study employed network pharmacology, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS technique, molecular docking, pharmacodynamic studies, western blotting, and immunofluorescence techniques to explore its potential mechanisms. RESULTS: Leo was found to assist hematoma absorption, thus improving the neurological outlook in an ICH mouse model. Importantly, molecular docking highlighted JAK as Leo's potential therapeutic target in ICH scenarios. Further experimental evidence demonstrated that Leo adjusts JAK1 and STAT1 phosphorylation, curbing Bax while augmenting Bcl-2 expression. CONCLUSION: Leo showcases potential in mitigating neuronal apoptosis post-ICH, predominantly via the JAK/STAT mechanism.

Angelica dahurica (A. dahurica) has a wide range of pharmacological effects, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects. In this study, we investigated the effect of A. dahurica extract (AD) and its effective component bergapten (BG) on hepatic fibrosis and potential mechanisms. Hepatic fibrosis was induced by intraperitoneal injection with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) for 1 week, and mice were administrated with AD or BG by gavage for 1 week before CCl4 injection. Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) were stimulated by transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) and cultured with AD, BG, GW4064 (FXR agonist) or Guggulsterone (FXR inhibitor). In CCl4-induced mice, AD significantly decreased serum aminotransferase, reduced excess accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM), inhibited caspase-1 and IL-1ß, and increased FXR expressions. In activated HSCs, AD suppressed the expressions of α-SMA, collagen I, and TIMP-1/MMP-13 ratio and inflammatory factors, functioning as FXR agonist. In CCl4-induced mice, BG significantly improved serum transaminase and histopathological changes, reduced ECM excessive deposition, inflammatory response, and activated FXR expression. BG increased FXR expression and inhibited α-SMA and IL-1ß expressions in activated HSCs, functioning as GW4064. FXR deficiency significantly attenuated the decreasing effect of BG on α-SMA and IL-1ß expressions in LX-2 cells. In conclusion, AD could regulate hepatic fibrosis by regulating ECM excessive deposition and inflammation. Activating FXR signaling by BG might be the potential mechanism of AD against hepatic fibrosis.

Phosphonate used as scale inhibitor is a non-negligible eutrophic contaminant in corresponding polluted waters. Besides, its conversion to orthophosphate (ortho-P) is a precondition for realizing bioavailable phosphorus recovery. Due to the feeble degradation efficiency with less than 30 % from classical Fenton commonly used in industrial wastewater treatment and itself vulnerable to strong inhibition interference of matrix chloride ions, we proposed an electrochemical approach to transform the native salt in the solution into oxidizing substances, sort of achieving beneficial utilization of matrix waste, and enhanced the ortho-P conversion rate of 1-Hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) to 89.2 % (± 3.6 %). In electrochlorination system, it was found that HEDP rapidly complexed with Fe(II) and then coordinated in-situ Fe(III) to release free HEDP via intramolecular metal-ligand electron transfer reaction. The subsequent degradation mainly rooted in the oxidation of pivotal reactive species HClO, FeIVO2+ and 1O2, causing C-P and CC bonds to fracture in sequence. Eventually the organically bound phosphorus of HEDP was recovered as ortho-P. This study acquainted the audiences with the rare mechanism of chloridion-triggered HEDP degradation under electrochemical way, as well as offered a feasible technology for synchronous transformation of organically bound phosphorus to ortho-P and elimination from phosphonates.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sprayers have emerged as valuable tools for pesticide application across various crops. Despite their increasing usage, the impact of several factors on spray performance and control efficacy in paddy fields warrants further investigation. This study examines atomization characteristics using a UAV spray test platform. Our evaluation of field spraying performance considers three UAV models, two nozzle types, two flight velocities, and adding methylated vegetable oil adjuvant (MVOA), in comparison with the electrical knapsack sprayer (EKS). RESULTS: Atomization characteristics demonstrated consistency within the downwash airflow field, but were influenced by spray solution, nozzle type, and spray pressure. The eight-rotor UAV sprayer excelled over the quad-rotor model in terms of spray deposition across both upper and lower rice canopies. The six-rotor UAV exhibited enhanced spray deposition, droplet density, and coverage at a flight velocity of 4 m s-1 . The choice of nozzle was pivotal; the flat fan nozzle produced finer droplets with desirable deposition and coverage, whereas the air-induction nozzle created larger droplets with consistent coverage at various flight velocities. Adding MVOA improved the physicochemical properties of the spray and its performance, yielding a more uniform distribution. When compared with the EKS, UAVs showed lower deposition but comparable spray penetration. Control efficacy with the UAV sprayer was less effective against Mythimna separata but achieved 81% efficacy against Laodelphax striatellus within 7 days. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that UAV sprayers, particularly when combined with tank-mix adjuvants and nozzle types, can be highly effective for controlling rice pests. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have promising applications in enhanced phototherapy. However, COFs that can sustainably play a role in phototherapy without continuous irradiation are extremely scarce. Herein, we report the fabrication of porphyrin-anthracene multifunctional COFs (Por-DPA) for sustainable photosterilization and bacterial-infected wound healing. A porphyrin photosensitizer, as one of the monomers, was used to provide photothermal and photodynamic activities under irradiation. An anthracene derivative, a good chemical source of singlet oxygen (1O2), was selected as another monomer to capture 1O2 and release it continuously via cycloreversion in the dark. The prepared Por-DPA COF prevents the self-aggregation quenching of the photosensitizer and thermal damage caused by continuous exposure to external light sources. Besides, Por-DPA exhibits good photothermal conversion performance and efficient 1O2 production capacity through dual pathways of photosensitization and cycloreversion. The developed sustainable photosterilization platform not only has good bactericidal effects on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, but also promotes wound healing without obvious side effects, and is expected to be a novel efficient bactericide.

Current protein or glucose based biomemristors have low resistance-switching performance and require complex structural designs, significantly hindering the development of implantable memristor devices. It is imperative to discover novel candidate materials for biomemristor with high durability and excellent biosafety for implantable health monitoring. Herein, we initially demonstrate the resistance switching characteristics of a nonvolatile memristor in a configuration of Pt/AlOOH/ITO consisting of biocompatible AlOOH nanosheets sandwiched between a Indium Tin Oxides (ITO) electrode and a platinum (Pt) counter-electrode. The hydrothermally synthesized AlOOH nanosheets have excellent biocompatibility as confirmed through the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) tests. Four discrete resistance levels are achieved in this assembled device in responsible to different compliance currents (ICC) for the set process, where the emerging multilevel states show high durability over 103 cycles, outperforming the protein-based biomemristors under similar conditions. The excellent performance of the Pt/AlOOH/ITO memristor is attributed to the significant role of hydrogen proton with pipe effect, as confirmed by both experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) analyses. The present results indicate the nonvolatile memristors with great potential as the next generation implantable multilevel resistive memories for long-term human health monitoring.

Eutrophication is a severe worldwide concern caused by excessive phosphorus release. Thus, significant efforts have been made to develop phosphorus removal techniques, particularly by nanomaterial adsorption. However, because of the limitations associated with nanoparticles including easy agglomeration, and separation challenges, a novel nanocomposite adsorbent with great adsorption performance is urgently required. A sponge adsorbent (MS-CMC@La) was developed in this study to remove phosphorus using melamine sponge (MS), LaCl3, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The results of SEM/EDS, FTIR, and XPS demonstrated that La was well-dispersed on MS-CMC@La. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics met with the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.981) and the pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.989), respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of MS-CMC@La was found to be 15.28 mg/g; the material exhibited excellent selectivity toward phosphorus in the presence of coexisting anion except of F-; the adsorption behavior was greatly impacted by pH. Furthermore, the electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange and inner-sphere coordination regulate the phosphate adsorption mechanism, with inner-sphere coordination dominating. In summary, the nano-enriched materials developed in this study are capable of facilitating the application of functionalized sponges in the field of wastewater.

Background: Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common endocrine malignancy worldwide. The treatment of PTC has attracted extensive attention and discussion from the public and scholars. However, no article has systematically assessed the related literature. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric and knowledge map analysis to reveal the dynamic scientific developments in the PTC therapy field. Methods: We retrieved publications related to PTC therapy from the Web of Scientific Core Collection (WoSCC) on May 1, 2023. The bibliometric package in R software, VOSviewer and CiteSpace software were used to analyze countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords. Then, we systematized and summarized the research landscape, global trends and hot topics of research. Results: This bibliometric analysis spanned from 2012 to 2022 and involved 18,501 authors affiliated with 3,426 institutions across 87 countries/regions, resulting in the publication of 3,954 papers in 860 academic journals. Notably, the number of publications and citations related to PTC therapy research has exhibited a steady increase over the past decade. China and the United States have emerged as leading contributors in terms of publication count, with the United States also being the most cited country. Furthermore, among the top 10 institutions with the highest number of published papers, half were located in China. Among the journals, Thyroid is ranked first in terms of total publications and citations. The most productive individual author was Miyauchi Akira. While previous research primarily focused on surgery and radioactive iodine therapy, the increasing emphasis on health awareness and advancements in medical technology have led to the emergence of active surveillance, thermal ablation, and genomic analysis as prominent areas of research. Conclusion: In conclusion, this comprehensive and quantitative bibliometric analysis elucidates the research trends and hotspots within PTC therapy, drawing from a substantial body of publications. This study provides valuable insights into the historical and current landscape of PTC therapy research while also offering guidance for future research directions. This study serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners seeking new avenues of exploration in the field.

Mariculture algae may present a crucial part of ocean-based solutions for climate change, with the ability to sequester carbon and remove nutrients. However, the expansion of mariculture algae faces multiple challenges. Here, we measure the changes in algae derived carbon sinks and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal between 2010 and 2020 in Shandong Province, China. We further identify the key driving factors, namely area, algal species proportion, and yield, that influence the changes. The results show that algae derived carbon sinks and nutrient removal growth rates in Shandong Province have slowed significantly since 2014, mainly due to area limitations, laver-oriented species change, and unstable yields. Artificial upwelling (AU) has the potential to enhance the yield and subsequently offset the loss of carbon sinks and nutrient removal caused by negative driving factors. Scenario analysis indicates that a complete deployment of AU by 2030 will offset up to a 44.52 % decrease in the mariculture algae area, or a 72.57 % increase in the laver share of the algal species combination compared to 2020. Similar conclusions are reached regarding the role of AU in N and P removal. This study also identifies ancillary challenges such as low energy efficiency and high costs faced by applying AU.

Context: Sepsis is a systemic, comprehensive inflammatory response that can induce serious complications for patients. No uniform definition and diagnostic criteria exist internationally for sepsis related to myocardial injury. Studying factors affecting prognosis for sepsis patients with myocardial injury can be helpful in providing a theoretical basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Objective: The study intended to explore the predictors of the short-term prognosis for septic patients with myocardial injury and to provide a theoretical basis for improving that prognosis. Design: The research team performed a retrospective study. Setting: The study took place at the Renmin Hospital at Hubei University of Medicine in Shiyan, Hubei, China. Participants: Participants were 138 patients with sepsis and myocardial injury at the hospital between January 2018 and February 2021. Groups: The research team divided participants into a survival group with 114 patients and a mortality group with 24 patients, based on their survival status at six months after being in the hospital. Outcome Measures: The research team collected and analyzed the following data: (1) demographic and clinical characteristics, such as age, gender, underlying disease, and disease severity; (2) echocardiographic indicators, including left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), stroke volume (SV), left ventricular end systolic dimension (LVESD), and left ventricular end diastolic dimension (LVEDD); and (3) myocardial injury markers and inflammatory factors, including white blood cell (WBC) count and levels of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), creatine kinase (CK), C-reactive protein (CRP), and procalcitonin (PCT). Results: The six-month mortality rate for patients with sepsis with myocardial injury was 17.39%. Compared to the survival group at participants' initial visits to the hospital, the mortality group had a significantly greater age (P = .046), sepsis severity (P < .001), heart rate (P < .001), APACHE II score (P < .001), SOFA score (P < .001), and use of vasoactive drugs (P = .002), and its length of hospital stay was significantly shorter (P < .001). The mortality group's LVEF was significantly lower than that of the survival group (P < .001). The mortality group's levels of WBC, cTnI, NT-proBNP, CK, CRP, and PCT were significantly higher than those in survival group (all P < .001). The univariate analysis found that an age>64 years (P < .001), a high APACHE II score (P < .001), an elevated cTnI (P = .017), an elevated NT-proBNP (P = .029), an elevated CK (P < .001), an elevated CRP (P = .031), and an elevated PCT (P < .001) were risk factors for a poor prognosis for patients. Multifactor logistic regression analysis showed that the risk factors for death were an age > 64 years (P < .001), a high APACHE II score (P < .001), and elevated levels of cTnI (P = .013), NT-proBNP (P < .001), CK (P < .001), CRP (P < .001), and PCT (P = .009). Conclusion: In summary, risk factors for poor prognosis in septic patients with myocardial injury included age>64 years, high APACHE II, elevated cTnI, elevated NT-proBNP, elevated CK, elevated CRP, and elevated PCT.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Psoralea corylifolia Linn. (BGZ) is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of kidney-yang deficiency syndrome (Yangsyn) with good curative effect and security. However, BGZ was also reported to induce liver injury in recent years. According to TCM theory, taking BGZ may induce a series of adverse reactions in patients with kidney-yin deficiency syndrome (Yinsyn), which suggests that BGZ-induced liver damage may be related to its unreasonable clinical use. AIM OF THE STUDY: Liver injury caused by TCM is a rare but potentially serious adverse drug reaction, and the identification of predisposed individuals for drug-induced liver injury (DILI) remains challenging. The study aimed to investigate the differential responses to BGZ in Yangsyn and Yinsyn rat models and identify the corresponding characteristic biomarkers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The corresponding animal models of Yangsyn and Yinsyn were induced by hydrocortisone and thyroxine + reserpine respectively. Body weight, organ index, serum biochemistry, and Hematoxylin and Eosin (HE) staining were used to evaluate the liver toxicity effect of BGZ on rats with Yangsyn and Yinsyn. Transcriptomics and metabonomics were used to screen the representative biomarkers (including metabolites and differentially expressed genes (DEGs)) changed by BGZ in Yangsyn and Yinsyn rats, respectively. RESULTS: The level changes of liver organ index, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), suggested that BGZ has liver-protective and liver-damaging effects on Yangsyn and Yinsyn rats, respectively, and the results also were confirmed by the pathological changes of liver tissue. The results showed that 102 DEGs and 27 metabolites were significantly regulated related to BGZ's protective effect on Yangsyn, which is mainly associated with the glycerophospholipid metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, pantothenate, and coenzyme A (CoA) biosynthesis pathways. While 28 DEGs and 31 metabolites, related to the pathway of pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, were significantly regulated for the BGZ-induced liver injury in Yinsyn. Furthermore, 4 DEGs (aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family member B1 (Aldh1b1), solute carrier family 25 member 25 (Slc25a25), Pim-3 proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase (Pim3), out at first homolog (Oaf)) and 4 metabolites (phosphatidate, phosphatidylcholine, N-Acetylleucine, biliverdin) in the Yangsyn group and 1 DEG [galectin 5 (Lgals5)] and 1 metabolite (5-amino-1-(5-phospho-D-ribosyl)imidazole-4-carboxylate) in Yinsyn group were significantly correlated to the ALT and AST levels of BGZ treated and untreated groups (receiver operating characteristic (ROC) ≥ 0.9). CONCLUSIONS: Yinsyn and Yangsyn are the predisposed syndromes for BGZ to exert liver damage and liver protection respectively, which are mainly related to the regulation of amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism, energy metabolism, and metabolism of cofactors and vitamins. The results further suggest that attention should be paid to the selection of predisposed populations when using drugs related to the regulation of energy metabolism, and the Yinsyn/Yangsyn animal models based on the theory of TCM syndromes may be a feasible method for identifying the susceptible population to receive TCM.

Cancer patients commonly suffer from loneliness, poor spiritual status, and fear of death; however, these evaluations are rarely revealed in urological cancer patients. Thus, this study aimed to assess the loneliness, spiritual well-being, and death perception, as well as their risk factors in urological cancer patients. A total of 324 urological (including renal, bladder, and prostate) cancer patients and 100 healthy controls were included. The University of California and Los Angeles loneliness scale (UCLA-LS), functional assessment of chronic illness therapy-spiritual well-being (FACIT-Sp), and death attitude profile-revised (DAP-R) scores were evaluated. The results showed that the UCLA-LS score was higher, but the FACIT-Sp score was lower in urological cancer patients than in healthy controls. According to the DAP-R score, fear of death, death avoidance, and approaching death acceptance were elevated, but neutral acceptance was lower in urological cancer patients than in healthy controls. Among urological cancer patients, the UCLA-LS score was highest but the FACIT-Sp score was lowest in bladder cancer patients; regarding the DAP-R score, fear of death and death avoidance were highest, but approaching death acceptance was lowest in bladder cancer patients. Interestingly, single/divorced/widowed status, bladder cancer diagnosis, higher pathological grade, surgery, systemic treatment, and local treatment were independent factors for higher UCLA-LS score or lower FACIT-Sp score. In conclusion, urological cancer (especially bladder cancer) patients bear increased loneliness and reduced spiritual well-being; they also carry higher fear of death, death avoidance, and approaching death acceptance but lower neutral acceptance of death.

LncRNAs play a critical role in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) progression. However, the function and detailed molecular mechanism of most lncRNAs in OSCC are not fully understood. Here, a novel nuclear-localized lncRNA, DUXAP9 (DUXAP9), that is highly expressed in OSCC is identified. A high level of DUXAP9 is positively associated with lymph node metastasis, poor pathological differentiation, advanced clinical stage, worse overall survival, and worse disease-specific survival in OSCC patients. Overexpression of DUXAP9 significantly promotes OSCC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and xenograft tumor growth and metastasis, and upregulates N-cadherin, Vimentin, Ki67, PCNA, and EZH2 expression and downregulates E-cadherin in vitro and in vivo, whereas knockdown of DUXAP9 remarkably suppresses OSCC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and xenograft tumor growth in vitro and in vivo in an EZH2-dependent manner. Yin Yang 1 (YY1) is found to activate the transcriptional expression of DUXAP9 in OSCC. Furthermore, DUXAP9 physically interacts with EZH2 and inhibits EZH2 degradation via the suppression of EZH2 phosphorylation, thereby blocking EZH2 translocation from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. Thus, DUXAP9 can serve as a promising target for OSCC therapy.

RESUMEN

Profound changes have taken place in human disease spectrum, constitution spectrum, and drug use behavior, and the safety of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) faces new trends and problems. In particular, serious adverse reactions/events such as liver injury and kidney injury caused by non-toxic TCM have been frequently reported, overturning people's understanding of TCM safety, and even shaking the public's confidence in the development of TCM. In the new era of globalization, correctly understanding the situation and problems of TCM safety and addressing the dilemmas in safety evaluation and risk prevention of TCM are the key missions to be undertaken by TCM practitioners. This paper suggests that the situation and problems of TCM safety should be viewed objectively and dialectically, and the use standard of TCM should be advanced with the times. Furthermore, this paper puts forward the new conception and methodology of TCM safety(including one innovative understanding, two types of evaluation modes, tri-elements injury hypothesis; four-quadrant risk decision processes, and five-grade safety evidence body) for the first time, hoping to provide new theories, new strategies, new methods and successful examples for solving the safety problems of TCM.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Anethum graveolens L. (dill), which has been used as a medicine, spice and aromatic plant since ancient times, is not only a traditional Chinese medicines but also an important medicinal and functional food in Europe and Central and South Asia. In ethnomedicine, dill reportedly exerts a protective effect on the liver and has been widely used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of jaundice in the liver and spleen and inflammatory gout diseases in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, studies have found that dill can regulate the NAT2 enzyme, and this plant was thus selected to study its alleviating effect on isoniazid liver injury. AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of dill on alleviating liver injury induced by hydrazine compounds represented by isoniazid through the use of network pharmacology combined with in vivo and in vitro experimental verifications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, we screened the key targets of dill in the treatment of liver injury through the use of network pharmacology; we then performed GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses using the DAVID database. We also verified the alleviative and anti-inflammatory effects of dill on isoniazid liver injury in rats by animal experiments. We further investigated the modulating effect of dill on the enzymatic activity of NAT2, a common metabolizing enzyme of hydrazine compounds. RESULTS: A total of 111 key targets were screened through network pharmacology. In vivo experiments showed that dill reduced the amount of inflammatory factors produced by isoniazid, such as IL-10, IL-1ß, TNF-α and IL-6, restored the levels of ALT, AST, r-GT, AKP and TBA in vivo, and attenuated isoniazid liver injury. Both in vivo and vitro results indicated that dill could regulate the expression of NAT2 enzymes. CONCLUSIONS: The results tentatively demonstrate that dill can alleviate isoniazid liver injury through multiple components, targets and pathways and exerts a regulatory effect on the NAT2 enzyme, and these findings thus provide new ideas for subsequent studies on hydrazide liver injury--reducing the risk of hydrazide-induced liver injury through anti-inflammation and regulation of NAT2 enzymes.

Objective: This study sought to determine the mean prognostic usefulness of seleniumphosphate synthase (SEPHS1) by investigating its expression in 33 human malignancies and its relationship to tumor immunity.Methods: The expression of selenophosphate synthase 1 (SEPHS1) in 33 human malignant tumors was examined using the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx), Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), and TIMER databases. Furthermore, the TCGA cohort was used to investigate relationships between SEPHS1 and immunological checkpoint genes (ICGs), tumor mutation burden (TMB), microsatellite instability (MSI), and DNA mismatch repair genes (MMRs). To establish independent risk factors and calculate survival probabilities for liver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC) and brain lower-grade glioma (LGG), Cox regression models and Kaplan-Meier curves were utilized. Eventually, the Genomics of Cancer Drug Sensitivity (GDSC) database was used to evaluate the drug sensitivity in LGG and LIHC patients with high SEPHS1 expression.Results: Overall, in numerous tumor tissues, SEPHS1 was highly expressed, and it significantly linked with the prognosis of LGG, ACC, and LIHC (P < .05). Furthermore, in numerous cancers, SEPHS1 expression was linked to tumor-infiltrating immune cells (TIICs), TMB, MSI, and MMRs. According to univariate and multivariate Cox analyses, SEPHS1 expression was significant for patients with LGG and LIHC.Conclusion: High SEPHS1 expression has a better prognosis for LGG, while low SEPHS1 expression has a better prognosis for LIHC. Chemotherapy was advised for LGG patients, particularly for those with high SEPHS1 expression because it can predict how responsive patients will be to 5-Fluorouracil and Temozolomide. This interaction between SEPHS1 and chemoradiotherapy has a positive clinical impact and may be used as evidence for chemotherapy for LGG and LIHC patients.

We investigated the priming effect of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) on carbon sink and iron uptake, and the possible mediation by AMF (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, Funneliformis mosseae) in semiarid agricultural soils. Maize seed dressings comprised of three nZVI concentrations of 0, 1, 2 g·kg-1 and was tested with and without AMF inoculation under high and low soil moistures, respectively. The ICP-OES observations indicated that both low dose of nZVI (1 g·kg-1) and high dose of nZVI (2 g·kg-1) significantly increased the iron concentrations in roots (L: 54.5-109.8 %; H: 119.1-245.4 %) and shoots (L: 40.8-78.9 %; H: 81.1-99.4 %). Importantly, the absorption and translocation rate of iron were substantially improved by AMF inoculation under the low-dose nZVI. Yet, the excess nanoparticles as a stress were efficiently relieved by rhizosphere hyphae, and the iron concentration in leaves and stems can maintain as high as about 300 mg·kg-1 while the iron translocation efficiency was reduced. Moreover, next-generation sequencing confirmed that appropriate amount of nZVI clearly improved the rhizosphere colonization of Funneliformis mosseae (p < 0.001) and the development of soil fungal community. Soil observations further showed that the hyphae development and GRSP (glomalin-related soil protein) secretion were significantly promoted (p < 0.05), with the increased R0.25 (< 0.25 mm) by 35.97-41.16 %. As a return, AMF and host plant turned to input more organic matter into soils for microbial growth and Fe uptake, and such interactions became more pronounced under drought stress. In contrast, high dose of nZVI (2 g·kg-1) tended to agglomerate on the surface of hyphae and spores, causing severe deformation and inactivation of AMF symbionts. Therefore, the priming effects of nZVI on carbon sequestration and Fe uptake in agricultural soils were positively mediated by AMF via the feedback loop of the plant-soil-microbe system for enhanced adaptation to global climate change.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect on facial acupoint temperature between acupuncture at Houxi (SI 3) and Dazhui (GV 14) so as to verify "Houxi (SI 3) communicating the governor vessel" based on the infrared thermal imaging technology. METHODS: Thirty-five healthy subjects (5 cases dropped off) were collected and before-after study in the same subject was adopted. The subjects were successively assigned into a sham-acupuncture group, a Houxi group, a Wangu group and a Dazhui group. Sham-acupuncture at Houxi (SI 3) on the left, acupuncture at Houxi (SI 3) on the left, Wangu (SI 4) on the left and Dazhui (GV 14) were given respectively. One intervention was given and the needles were retained for 30 min in each group. 30 min before and after acupuncture, the infrared thermal images of the face were collected, and the facial temperature was compared among the following 5 acupoints, i.e. Yintang (GV 24+), Suliao (GV 25), Shuigou (GV 26), Duiduan (GV 27) and Chengjiang (CV 24). RESULTS: After acupuncture, the facial temperature at Yintang (GV 24+) and Chengjiang (CV 24) was increased compared before acupuncture in the sham-acupuncture group (P<0.01, P<0.05). The facial temperature at Suliao (GV 25) in the Houxi group was reduced after acupuncture (P<0.05). In the Wangu group, the temperature at Yintang (GV 24+) was increased compared before acupuncture (P<0.01). The facial temperature was increased at Duiduan (GV 27) and Chengjiang (CV 24) compared before acupuncture in the Dazhui group (P<0.01, P<0.05). The differences of facial temperature at Chengjiang (CV 24) and Suliao (GV 25) after acupuncture were larger than before acupuncture in the Houxi group and the Dazhui group (P<0.01). In comparison with the temperature at Suliao (GV 25) of the same group, the differences of facial temperature before and after acupuncture at Yintang (GV 24+), Shuigou (GV 26), Duiduan (GV 27) and Chengjiang (CV 24) were increased in the Houxi group (P<0.01, P<0.05); while, the increase was also obtained at Yintang (GV 24+), Shuigou (GV 26), Duiduan (GV 27) and Chengjiang (CV 24) in the Dazhui group (P<0.05, P<0.01). The difference of facial temperature at Yintang (GV 24+) before and after acupuncture was increased compared with Suliao (GV 25) in the Wangu group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture at Houxi (SI 3) generates a similar thermal effect as Dazhui (GV 14). It regulates and dissipates the core temperature to "govern the yang qi of the whole body".

Excessive drinking has been listed by the World Health Organization as the fifth major risk factor; especially the liver, as the core organ of alcohol metabolism, is prone to organic lesions. Probiotics have received attention due to their bioactivity for liver protection. The beneficial effects of probiotics on hosts are related to their physiological functions. Therefore, based on the concept of second-generation synbiotes, this study explored the protective effects of four dietary polyphenols on the stress tolerance, hydrophobicity, adhesion, and digestive characteristics of L. rhamnosus 1.0320. L. rhamnosus 1.0320 had the best synergistic effect with dihydromyricetin (DMY). Therefore, this combination was selected as a synbiotic supplement to explore the protective effect on acute alcohol exposure-induced hepatic impairment. The results showed that L. rhamnosus 1.0320 combined with DMY restored the intestinal barrier by upregulating short-chain fatty acid levels and activated the adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase-mediated lipid metabolism pathway to inhibit oxidative stress, inflammation, and lipid accumulation in the liver. Furthermore, 109 CFU/mouse/d L. rhamnosus 1.0320 and 50 mg/kg/d DMY by gavage were identified as the optimal doses for protection against acute alcohol expose-induced hepatic impairment. This study provides new insights into alleviating acute alcoholic hepatic impairment by targeting intestinal metabolites through the gut-liver axis.

Milk thistle is a traditional medicinal herb. Silybin is a medicinal component found in the seed coat of milk thistle, which has liver-protective and anti-cancer properties. Conventional studies have focused on the extraction of silybin with organic reagents, which was inapplicable to the food industry. This study aims to develop a fermented milk containing silybin and protein from the milk thistle seeds. A three step procedure was developed, comprising homogenization of milk thistle seeds, NaHCO3 heat treatment, and microbial fermentation. The silybin was characterized by high performance liquid chromatography, and the protein was quantified and electrophorized. It was found that the homogenization step was essential for the preparation of protein, and the NaHCO3 heat treatment was the crucial step in obtaining silybin. The optimal NaHCO3 treatment settings were 1% NaHCO3, 60°C, and 3 h, and the optimal strains for microbial fermentation were L131 (Rummeliibacillus stabekisii) and RS72 (Lactobacillus plantarum). The silybin yield in the fermented milk reached 11.24-12.14 mg/g seeds, accounting for 72.6-78.4% of the total silybin in the milk thistle seeds, and the protein yield reached 121.8-129.6 mg/g seeds. The fermented milk had a slightly sweet yoghurt-like flavor and could be used as a dietary supplement for silybin and protein.
