BACKGROUND: In recent years, sleep problems have emerged as a significant factor in the development of diseases that influence cognitive function. The inflammatory response may have a role in the neurobiological processes of sleep deprivation, resulting in impairment of memory and learning. Shenghui Decoction (SHD) is a classic formula in Chinese medicine used to treat forgetfulness and insomnia. However, it remains unclear whether the anti-inflammatory effects of SHD are specifically linked to the inhibition of P2X7R and p38MAPK. METHODS: Analysis of chemical constituents of Shenghui Decoction based on UPLC-Q-TOF-MS / MS. The learning and memory competency of the mice was assessed using the new object recognition and Morris water maze tests. The morphology of hippocampus neurons was observed using HE staining, and the expression of inflammatory factors was measured using ELISA and immunofluorescence. The expression of P2X7R and p38MAPK in the hippocampus was analyzed via real-time PCR and Western blotting. Additionally, the components absorbed into the bloodstream of SHD were analyzed. RESULTS: The study found that SHD contains 47 chemical constituents, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, iridoids, and triterpenoids. In addition, it was observed that SHD significantly improved the learning and memory abilities of the mice. SHD also improved the morphology of hippocampus neurons. The expression of inflammatory factors was decreased in the SHD-treated mice. Additionally, the expression of P2X7R and p38MAPK was decreased in the hippocampus of the SHD-treated mice. Fifteen prototype chemical constituents were detected in blood. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests that SHD could be a viable treatment for cognitive impairments associated with brain inflammation. The therapeutic effects of SHD are likely due to its chemical components, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, iridoids, and triterpenoids. SHD can improve learning and memory impairment caused by sleep deprivation through the P2X7R/p38MAPK inflammatory signaling pathways.

(1) Background: the development of new antibiotic substitutes to promote pig growth and health has become an important way to solve the current dilemma and promote the pig industry. (2) Methods: to assess the effects of a fermented Chinese herbal (FCH) formula on the growth and immunity of growing pigs, 100 Duroc × Landrace × Yorshire three-way crossed growing pigs were randomly divided into control and treatment groups that were fed a basal diet, and a basal diet with 1% (group A), 2% (group B), and 3% (group C) FCH formulas, respectively. A sixty-day formal experiment was conducted, and their growth and serum indices, colonic microbiota, and metabolites were analyzed. (3) Results: the daily gain of growing pigs in groups A, B, and C increased by 7.93%, 17.68%, and 19.61%, respectively, and the feed-to-gain ratios decreased by 8.33%, 15.00%, and 14.58%, respectively. Serum immunity and antioxidant activities were significantly increased in all treatment groups. Particularly, adding a 2% FCH formula significantly changed the colon's microbial structure; the Proteobacteria significantly increased and Firmicutes significantly decreased, and the metabolite composition in the colon's contents significantly changed. (4) Conclusions: these results indicate that the FCH formula is a good feed additive for growing pigs, and the recommended addition ratio was 3%.

Cough-variant asthma (CVA) has been recognized as the initial stage or pre-asthmatic state of classic asthma, which characterized by cough as the primary clinical presentation. Inhaled glucocorticoids, oral leukotriene receptor antagonists and antihistamines are the clinical treatments, but their efficacy is not satisfactory. Some traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been reported to have certain advantages in the treatment of CVA, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are still unclear. Recent research has indicated that Anacyclus pyerhrurm (L) DC. is commonly used in the treatment of human diseases. The aim of our study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative mechanism of the ethanol extract of Anacyclus pyrethrum (L) DC. root (EEAP) in a model of CVA. In our study, we indicated that EEAP ameliorated CVA by reducing cough frequency and inflammatory effect and oxidative stress in an in vivo rat model of CVA. In addition, EEAP ameliorated LPS-induced cell apoptosis and regulated inflammatory effect and oxidative stress in vitro. Mechanistically, EEAP exerted anti-inflammatory effects through regulating the TLR4/NF-κB pathway and Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, and overexpressing TLR4 or activating the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway by SKL2001 reversed EEAP-exerted effects in LPS-exposed BEAS-2B and 16-HBE cells. In conclusion, EEAP attenuated cell apoptosis, inflammation and oxidative stress through restraining the TLR4/NF-κB pathway and Wnt/ß-catenin pathway in CVA, which shown that EEAP might be a promising therapeutic agent for CVA and may provide a theoretical basis for clinical treatment with CVA patients.

Herein, a cost-effective method for improving the anaerobic fermentation performance of sewage sludge (SS) is proposed. The highest volatile fatty acids (VFAs) reached up to 5550 mg COD/L with the supplementation of 0.2 g urea/g total suspended solids (TSS). Intensive exploration showed that SS decomposition was profoundly triggered by urea and the free ammonia generated due to the hydrolysis of urea, providing adequately bioaccessible substrates for acidogenic reactions and thus contributing to VFAs formation. Microbial composition analysis indicated that functional bacteria (i.e., Tissierella and Clostridium) associated with VFAs generation were enriched. Moreover, the metabolic activities of functional flora (i.e., membrane transport and fatty acid synthesis) were up-regulated due to the stimulation of urea. In general, the increase in bioavailable organic matter and functional microbes, and thus the increased microbial metabolic activities, improved the efficient production of VFAs. This study could provide a cost-effective approach for resource recovery from SS.

The investigation of interaction mechanism of U(VI) selective removal on amidoxime-functionalized metal organic framework (i.e., UiO-66(Zr)-AO) derived from macromolecular carbohydrate is conducive to apply metal organic frameworks in actual environmental remediation. The batch experiments showed that UiO-66(Zr)-AO displayed the fast removal rate (equilibrium time of 0.5 h), high adsorption capacity (384.6 mg/g), excellent regeneration performance (<10 % decrease after three cycles) towards U(VI) removal due to the unprecedented chemical stability, large surface area and simple fabrication. U(VI) removal at different pH can be satisfactorily fitted by diffuse layer modeling with cation exchange at low pH and an inner-sphere surface complexation at high pH. The inner-sphere surface complexation was further demonstrated by X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. These findings revealed that UiO-66(Zr)-AO can be an effective adsorbent to remove the radionuclides from aqueous solution, which is crucial for recycling of uranium resource and decreasing the uranium harm to the environment.

RESUMEN

Two new (1 and 2) meroterpenoids were isolated from the bark of Cinnamomum cassia. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analyses and chemical methods. Antioxidant activities of 1 and 2 were evaluated by the ORAC and DPPH radical scavenging assays, and the results revealed that compound 2 displayed oxygen radical absorbance capacity. The discovery of compounds 1 and 2 added new members of this kind of natural product.

Postoperative adhesion (PA) is currently one of the most unpleasant complications following surgical procedures. Researchers have developed several new strategies to alleviate the formation of PA to a great extent, but so far, no single measure or treatment can meet the expectations and requirements of clinical patients needing complete PA prevention. Chinese medicine (CM) has been widely used for thousands of years based on its remarkable efficacy and indispensable advantages CM treatments are gradually being accepted by modern medicine. Therefore, this review summarizes the formating process of PA and the efficacy and action mechanism of CM treatments, including their pharmacological effects, therapeutic mechanisms and advantages in PA prevention. We aim to improve the understanding of clinicians and researchers on CM prevention in the development of PA and promote the in-depth development and industrialization process of related drugs.

This study tested the hypothesis that glycine improves intestinal barrier function through regulating oxidative stress in broilers exposed to heat stress. A total of 300 twenty-one-day-old female Arbor Acres broilers (600 ± 2.5g) was randomly allocated to 5 treatments (6 replicate of 10 birds each). The 5 treatments were as follows: the control group (CON) was kept under thermoneutral condition (24 ± 1°C) and was fed a basal diet. Broilers fed a basal diet and reared under high ambient temperature (HT) were considered as the HT group (34 ± 1°C for 8 h/d). Broilers fed a basal diet supplemented with 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% glycine and exposed to HT were regarded as the HT + glycine treatments. The results exhibited that heat stress reduced growth performance, serum total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and glutathione (GSH) concentration (P < 0.05); increased activity of serum catalase (CAT) and the contents of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (P < 0.05). HT exposure led to downregulating the mRNA expression of NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 (NQO1), Occludin, and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) (P < 0.05); enhanced the mRNA levels of Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), CAT, glutathione synthetase (GSS), and glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit (GCLM) (P < 0.05); impaired the intestinal morphology (P < 0.05); and altered the diversity and community of gut microbiota (P < 0.05). The final body weight (FBW), ADFI, ADG, and gain-to-feed ratio (G: F) increased linearly or quadratically, and the antioxidant capacity was improved (P < 0.05) with glycine supplementation. Glycine treatment increased the villus height (VH), and villus height to crypt depth ratio (V/C) of the duodenum linearly or quadratically, and linearly increased the VH of jejunum and ileum. The mRNA expression of Occludin, and ZO-1 were increased linearly in the ileum mucosa of broilers subjected to HT. Collectively, these results demonstrated that glycine supplementation alleviates heat stress-induced dysfunction of antioxidant status and intestinal barrier in broilers.

BACKGROUND: We designed a new surgical procedure to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH). In order to verify its effectiveness and safety, we constructed this randomized controlled trial to compare the efficacy of our innovative enucleation technique- photoselective sharp enucleation of the prostate (PSEP), with a front-firing 532-nm laser and the traditional technique-photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) in the treatment of BPH. METHODS: A total of 154 consecutive patients diagnosed with bladder outlet obstruction secondary to BPH in our center from June 2018 to April 2019 were randomly divided into the PSEP group (n = 77) and the PVP group (n = 77) and were treated surgically with either PSEP or PVP. All patients were assessed preoperatively and followed up at 1, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. The international prostate symptom score,quality-of-life score, postvoid residual urine volume, maximum urine flow rate, prostate volume, prostate-specific antigen, and adverse events were compared. RESULTS: The lower urinary tract symptoms in both groups were significantly improved compared with the baseline at 1, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. The PSEP and PVP groups had an equivalent International Prostate Symptom Score, quality-of-life score, postvoid residual urine volume, maximum urine flow rate, prostate-specific antigen at each follow-up (P > 0.05). The median operative time in the PSEP group was significantly shorter than that in the PVP group (35 min vs. 47 min, P < 0.001). At 6 and 12 months after surgery, the median PV in the PSEP group was smaller than that in the PVP group (P < 0.05). Complication rates were comparable between the groups. CONCLUSION: Both PSEP and PVP can achieve good efficacy and safety in the treatment of BPH. PSEP can remove more tissue than PVP and is associated with higher efficiency. In addition, PSEP eliminates the problem of lack of tissue samples associated with PVP. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, identifie:ChiCTR1800015867, date:25/04/2018.

A total of 8 bHLH transcription factors were cloned from Panax quinquefolius and the response of them to methyl jasmonate(MeJA) was studied.To be specific, based on the preliminary transcriptome screening, 8 bHLH transcription factors were cloned with seedlings which had been cultured for 3 weeks.The content of ginsenosides Rg_1, Re, and Rb_1, and total saponins in the adventitious roots of P.quinquefolius was determined at different time of MeJA treatment by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and spectrophotometry.Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(PCR) was used to detect the relative expression of 8 transcription factors after MeJA treatment.The correlation between the relative expression of the 8 transcription factors and the saponin content after MeJA treatment was checked by Pearson's correlation analysis.The results showed that the PCR products(Pq-bHLH21-Pq-bHLH28) of the 8 bHLH transcription factors were 762-2 013 bp in length.They were submitted to NCBI to obtain the Genbank access numbers.The proteins yielded from Pq-bHLH21-Pq-bHLH28 showed amino acid sequence identity of 24.90%, and each amino acid sequence had the bHLH(Basic Helix-loop-helix) conserved domain and belonged to the bHLH family.The 5 amino acid sequences of Pq-bHLH22 and Pq-bHLH24-Pq-bHLH27 contained the bHLH-MYC N domain, which belonged to the MYC transcription factors.Pq-bHLH21-Pq-bHLH28 responded to MeJA within 48 h of treatment.At 72 h, the expression of Pq-bHLH24 reached 106.53 folds the highest in the treatment group.Pq-bHLH25, Pq-bHLH27, and Pq-bHLH28 showed synergic expression.Pq-bHLH21 may re-gulate the biosynthetic pathway of ginsenoside Rb_1, while Pq-bHLH22, Pq-bHLH25, and Pq-bHLH28 were in significantly positive correlation with the biosynthetic pathway of ginsenoside Re.The result lays a foundation for further verifying the regulation of ginsenoside biosynthesis by bHLH transcription factors.

Folic acid, served as dietary supplement, is closely linked to one-carbon metabolism and methionine metabolism. Previous clinical evidence indicated that folic acid supplementation displays dual effect on cancer development, promoting or suppressing tumor formation and progression. However, the underlying mechanism remains to be uncovered. Here, we report that high-folate diet significantly promotes cancer development in mice with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) induced by DEN/high-fat diet (HFD), simultaneously with increased expression of methionine adenosyltransferase 2A (gene name, MAT2A; protein name, MATIIα), the key enzyme in methionine metabolism, and acceleration of methionine cycle in cancer tissues. In contrast, folate-free diet reduces MATIIα expression and impedes HFD-induced HCC development. Notably, methionine metabolism is dynamically reprogrammed with valosin-containing protein p97/p47 complex-interacting protein (VCIP135) which functions as a deubiquitylating enzyme to bind and stabilize MATIIα in response to folic acid signal. Consistently, upregulation of MATIIα expression is positively correlated with increased VCIP135 protein level in human HCC tissues compared to adjacent tissues. Furthermore, liver-specific knockout of Mat2a remarkably abolishes the advocating effect of folic acid on HFD-induced HCC, demonstrating that the effect of high or free folate-diet on HFD-induced HCC relies on Mat2a. Moreover, folate and multiple intermediate metabolites in one-carbon metabolism are significantly decreased in vivo and in vitro upon Mat2a deletion. Together, folate promotes the integration of methionine and one-carbon metabolism, contributing to HCC development via hijacking MATIIα metabolic pathway. This study provides insight into folate-promoted cancer development, strongly recommending the tailor-made folate supplement guideline for both sub-healthy populations and patients with cancer expressing high level of MATIIα expression.

The accumulating evidence revealed that gut microbiota plays an important role in pathological process of disease including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, heart failure, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Polysaccharides extracted from Chinese medicine (CM) can not only alleviate pathological status but also promote health by anti-inflammatory, regulating immunity, lowering blood glucose and lipids, anti-cancer, and anti-oxidation. The alterations of gut microbiota composition and metabolism pathways are the potential mechanisms of CM polysaccharides treatment. In addition, they exert functions through gut-organ axis or play an indirect role by synergistic actions with other drugs or components mediated by gut microbiota. This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms of CM polysaccharides interacted with intestinal microbial inhabitants as potential prebiotics for promoting health.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of tryptophan (Trp) supplementation on rectal temperature, hormone, and cytokine levels in broilers subjected to acute heat stress. A total of 300 18-day-old female Arbor Acres broilers were randomly allocated to five dietary treatment groups with six replicates per treatment group and ten birds per replicate. Broilers were fed a basal diet and in the thermoneutral conditions (TN, 23 ± 1 °C) was considered as the TN group. Broilers were fed a basal diet and exposed to acute heat stress (HS, 34 ± 1 °C) was regarded as the HS group, and other broilers exposed to acute heat stress (34 ± 1°C) were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0.09%, 0.18%, and 0.27% Trp. Results indicated that acute heat stress increased the rectal temperature (P < 0.05), enhanced the concentrations of corticosterone (CORT), dopamine (DA), adrenaline (Adr), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in serum (P < 0.05), and elevated the levels of serum tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH)1, tryptophan 2, 3-dioxygenase (TDO), indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase (IDO), and kynurenic acid (P < 0.05), compared with the TN group. Meanwhile, acute heat stress increased the levels of serum Trp, hypothalamic Trp, 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HT), and interleukin-22 (P < 0.05) relative to the TN group. However, compared with the heat stress group, Trp supplementation decreased the rectal temperature of heat-stressed broilers and dietary 0.09% Trp supplementation decreased the levels of serum CRH and TDO (P < 0.05), increased the levels of serum Trp and IL-22 (P < 0.05) in heat-stressed broilers. In addition, dietary supplemented with 0.18% Trp reduced the levels of serum DA, Adr, noradrenaline (NA), CRH, TDO, IDO, kynurenic acid, IL-1ß, and hypothalamic 5-HIAA/5-HT (P < 0.05), increased the levels of serum Trp, 5-HT, and IL-22, and upregulated the concentrations of hypothalamic Trp and 5-HT in heat-stressed broilers (P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary 0.27% Trp supplementation decreased the levels of serum DA, CRH, TDO, and hypothalamic 5-HIAA/5-HT (P < 0.05), and upregulated the levels of serum Trp, 5-HT, IL-22, hypothalamic Trp and 5-HT in heat-stressed broilers (P < 0.05). Taken together, dietary 0.18% Trp supplementation may be the optimal level for broilers reared under acute heat stress.

RESUMEN

The petrochemical industry is one of the major emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the current studies have mostly focused on the identification of the chemical characteristics of non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) VOCs species from the petroleum refining sub-sector. Research on the characteristics of VOCs components in oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) species and other important sub-sectors is still lacking. Therefore, eight enterprises at a petrochemical industrial park in the Pearl River Delta region were carefully selected to represent three major subsectors, namely petroleum refining, synthetic materials, and organic chemicals, for the petrochemical industry. The VOCs (including 22 OVOCs species) from stack emissions and fugitive emissions, as well as nearby sensitive sites, were sampled, and the source reactivity (SR), the thresholds of malodor, and the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were assessed. The main results were as follows:① the VOCs concentrations of the stack emissions from the petrochemical industrial park were between 0.2-46.3 mg·m-3. The VOCs species were greatly affected by the type of after-treatment technology. A major VOC species emitted from the combustion-based after treatments was formaldehyde, whereas the species emitted from the non-combustion-based equipment were acetone, 1,3-butadiene, acrylic, and isobutane. ② The fugitive VOCs emissions from the petroleum storage tank area were dominated by alkanes, whereas the other fugitive emission sites and the sensitive sites were dominated by OVOCs such as acetone, formaldehyde, and ethyl acetate. ③ The SRs were mainly contributed by OVOCs, aromatics, and olefins, with average proportions of 43.1%, 24.2%, and 21.1%, respectively, with the major species being formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, m/p-xylene, ethylene, and toluene. ④ The malodor appeared both in fugitive emission areas and the sensitive sites. The main odor components were OVOCs such as n-butyraldehyde, propionaldehyde, hexanal, and valeraldehyde. ⑤ The non-carcinogenic risks occurred in the fugitive emission areas and the sensitive sites of resin, alcohol, and aldehyde production, which were mainly caused by OVOCs such as free acetaldehyde, acrolein, and propionaldehyde. No carcinogenic risk was found in any of the sampled sites. This research can provide scientific support for the formulation of priority VOCs species-based precise control strategies in petrochemical industrial parks.

The efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibition in inducing death of cancer cells is affected by the immunosuppressive "cold" tumor microenvironment, which results in a poor response by the patient's antitumor immune system. However, the immunomodulatory effects of immunogenic cell death in response to irritation by heat energy and reactive oxygen species (ROS) can switch the tumor microenvironment from "cold" to "hot." This study has developed a nanoadjuvant for immune therapy using iron tungsten oxide (FeWOx)-based nanosheets with surface PEGylation (FeWOx-PEG). This FeWOx-PEG nanoadjuvant serves as a chemodynamic reagent via the Fenton reaction and acts as a photosensitizer for photodynamic and photothermal therapy under near-infrared II laser irradiation; however, it could also be used to augment tumor-infiltrating T-cells and provoke a systemic antitumor immune response by combining the immunogenic cell death triggered by ROS and photothermal therapy with the immune checkpoint blockade. This research demonstrates that application of the FeWOx-PEG nanoadjuvant under the guidance of magnetic resonance/computed tomography/photoacoustic imaging can eliminate the primary tumor and suppress the growth of distant tumors.

This study aims to explore the molecular mechanism of Ganoderma against gastric cancer based on network pharmacology, molecular docking, and cell experiment. The active components and targets of Ganoderma were retrieved from Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform(TCMSP), and gastric cancer-related targets from GeneCards and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man(OMIM). The protein-protein interaction(PPI) network of the common targets was constructed with STRING, followed by Gene Ontology(GO) term enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis of the common genes based on Bioconductor and R language. The medicinal-disease-component-target network and medicinal-disease-component-target-pathway network were established by Cytoscape. Molecular docking was performed between ß-sitosterol(the key component in Ganoderma) and the top 15 targets in the PPI network. Cell experiment was performed to verify the findings. A total of 14 active components and 28 targets of Ganoderma were retrieved, and the medicinal and the disease shared 25 targets, including caspase-3(CASP3), caspase-8(CASP8), caspase-9(CASP9), and B-cell lymphoma-2(BCL2). The common targets involved 72 signaling pathways and apoptosis and p53 signaling pathway may play a crucial role in the effect of Ganoderma against gastric cancer. ß-sitosterol had strong binding activity to the top 15 targets in the PPI network. The in vitro cell experiment demonstrated that ß-sitosterol inhibited gastric cancer AGS cell proliferation by inducing cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in the S phase, which might be related to the regulation of the p53 pathway. This study shows the multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway characteristics of Ganoderma against gastric cancer, which lays a scientific basis for further research on the molecular mechanism.

A new multi-point inflow pre-anoxic/oxic/anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A1/O2/A3/A4/O5) sludge-membrane coupling process and pilot plant were developed and designed to solve the problem of nitrogen and phosphorus removal of low carbon and nitrogen (C/N) ratio domestic sewage in southern China. The removal effect and transformation rule of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the system were studied by changing the distribution ratio of multi-point influent. The average C/N ratio of the influent was 2.09 and the influent distribution ratio was 1:1. When the temperature was 16-25 °C, the average concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+- N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) in the effluent were 21.31 (±2.65), 0.60 (±0.24), 12.76 (±1.09), and 0.34 (±0.05) mg/L, respectively, and their average removals are 87.3 (±1.2)%, 98.7 (±0.4)%, 74.1 (±1.3)%, and 88.1 (±0.4)% respectively. When the low temperature was 12-15 °C, the average removals were 78.6 (±1.1)%, 90.5 (±1.3)%, 73.7 (±1.13)%, and 86.6 (±1.7)%, respectively. Compared with the traditional anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A2O) process under the same conditions, the TN removal was increased by 15.4%, and the TP removal was increased by 22.2%. This system has obvious advantages in treating wastewater with low C/N ratio, thereby solving the problem wherein the effluent of biological phosphorus removal from low C/N ratio domestic sewage was difficult when it was lower than 0.5 mg/L.

Developing new sources of organic selenium (Se) has potential benefits for animal production and human nutrition via animal-based foods enriched with Se. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Se-enriched insect protein (SEIP) in comparison with other sources, such as sodium selenite (SS) and selenium-enriched yeast (SEY), on performance, egg quality, selenium concentration in eggs, serum biochemical indices, immune capacity, and intestinal morphology of laying hens. Four hundred and fifty 24-week-old Hy-Line Brown laying hens with 94.0 ± 1.5% laying rate were randomly allocated to five groups with six replicates of 15 hens each. The control diet was prepared without adding exogenous selenium (calculated basal Se content of 0.08 mg/kg). The normal group was fed basal diets supplemented with 0.3 mg/kg of Se provided by sodium selenite. Three treatment groups (SS, SEY, and SEIP, respectively) were fed basal diets supplemented with 2 mg/kg of Se provided by sodium selenite, Se-enriched yeast, and SEIP, respectively. The feeding trial lasted for 12 weeks. Results revealed that dietary supplementation of 2 mg/kg of Se increased egg weight, decreased feed conversion ratio, and enhanced the antioxidant capacity of eggs in laying hens relative to the control group, whereas no significant differences were observed among SS, SEY, and SEIP treatment groups for the same. The organic source of Se provided by SEY or SEIP showed higher bio efficiency, as indicated by higher selenium content in eggs of SEY and SEIP compared with SS, although higher content was observed in SEY compared with SEIP. Also, the organic Se source significantly improved antioxidant capacity and immune functions of laying hens than the inorganic Se source. Diets supplemented with SEIP and SS significantly improved jejunal morphology of the laying hens compared with SEY, whereas SEIP was more effective than SEY to improve the oviduct health of laying hens. The results of this work evidently points the additive effect and nontoxicity of SEIP. Thus, SEIP could be used as another organic source of Se in the diet of laying hens and production of selenium-enriched eggs for humans.
