RESUMEN

Tibetan medicinal materials play a significant role in Tibetan culture. However, some types of Tibetan medicinal materials share similar shapes and colors, but possess different medicinal properties and functions. The incorrect use of such medicinal materials may lead to poisoning, delayed treatment, and potentially severe consequences for patients. Historically, the identification of ellipsoid-like herbaceous Tibetan medicinal materials has relied on manual identification methods, including observation, touching, tasting, and nasal smell, which heavily rely on the technicians' accumulated experience and are prone to errors. In this paper, we propose an image-recognition method for ellipsoid-like herbaceous Tibetan medicinal materials that combines texture feature extraction and a deep-learning network. We created an image dataset consisting of 3200 images of 18 types of ellipsoid-like Tibetan medicinal materials. Due to the complex background and high similarity in the shape and color of the ellipsoid-like herbaceous Tibetan medicinal materials in the images, we conducted a multi-feature fusion experiment on the shape, color, and texture features of these materials. To leverage the importance of texture features, we utilized an improved LBP (local binary pattern) algorithm to encode the texture features extracted by the Gabor algorithm. We inputted the final features into the DenseNet network to recognize the images of the ellipsoid-like herbaceous Tibetan medicinal materials. Our approach focuses on extracting important texture information while ignoring irrelevant information such as background clutter to eliminate interference and improve recognition performance. The experimental results show that our proposed method achieved a recognition accuracy of 93.67% on the original dataset and 95.11% on the augmented dataset. In conclusion, our proposed method could aid in the identification and authentication of ellipsoid-like herbaceous Tibetan medicinal materials, reducing errors and ensuring the safe use of Tibetan medicinal materials in healthcare.

RESUMEN

Objective:To investigate the expression level of serum 25-(OH) D and its correlation in patients with vestibular neuritis(VN). Methods:30 acute VN patients and 50 age-and sex-matched healthy controls who attended the Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Department of the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from October 2020 to October 2021 were selected. The demographic and clinical data of all subjects were recorded, the levels of serum 25-(OH) D and inflammatory markers were measured and compared, and the changes of serum 25-(OH) D levels in convalescent patients with VN were followed up. Results:The serum level of 25-(OH) D in the acute phase VN group was significantly lower than that in healthy controls[(10.14±2.92) ng/mL vs (20.61±4.70) ng/mL, P<0.01], and the deficiency rate of 100.0%(30/30) was significantly higher than 54.0%(27/50). Moreover, the serum level of 25-(OH) D in the recovery period(3 months later) was significantly higher[(10.14±2.92) ng/mL vs (15.94±4.88) ng/mL, P<0.01], and the deficiency rate was significantly decreased by 76.7%(23/30). However, the serum 25-(OH) D level was significantly lower in both the VN group than that in both the acute period and the recovery group, and the deficiency rate was significantly higher than that in the control group. Multivariate binary Logistic regression model analysis showed that low-level serum 25-(OH) D was associated with the onset of VN, with an OR value of 0.193(95%CI=0.043-0.861, P=0.031). In addition, the results of this study showed that peripheral blood leukocyte(WBC) and neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio(NLR) levels in the acute VN group were significantly higher than in healthy controls[(7.65±3.02) ×108/L vs (5.50±2.50) ×108/L, P<0.01; (2.46±2.95) ×100% vs(1.67±0.92) ×100%, P<0.01 ], and there was no significant difference in Platelet / lymphocyte ratio(PLR) and and average platelet volume(MPV) levels in the two groups(P>0.05). There were no significant differences in age distribution, sex ratio, body mass index, persistent health problems, or lifestyle groups(P>0.05). Conclusion:This study is the first to detect serum 25-(OH) D level and inflammation index level, and dynamically assess the serum 25-(OH) D level in different stages, found that low serum 25-(OH) D is associated with the onset of VN, physiological concentration of serum 25-(OH) D is a protective factor of VN, vitamin D supplementation therapy may be a new target of VN treatment.

RESUMEN

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different patterns and sources of Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Se on performance, mineral deposition (liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen, pectorals muscle, and tibia), and excretion of laying hens, then to find an optimal dietary supplemental pattern of trace elements in laying hens. A total of 864 healthy laying hens with similar laying rate (Roman, 26-week-old) were randomly divided into nine treatments, with six replications of 16 birds per replication, including a control treatment and four patterns with different element sources (inorganic or organic): (1) Control treatment (basic diet without added extra trace minerals, CT); pattern 1, NRC (1994) recommended level (NRC-L): (2) inorganic minerals of NRC-L pattern (IN), (3) organic minerals of NRC-L pattern (ON); pattern 2, NY/T 33-2004 recommended level (NY/T-L): (4) inorganic minerals of NY/T-L pattern (IY), (5) organic minerals of NY/T-L pattern (OY); pattern 3, 50% NRC (1994) recommended level (50% NRC-L): (6) inorganic minerals of 50% NRC-L pattern (IHN), (7) organic minerals of 50% NRC-L pattern (OHN); pattern 4, the ratio of minerals in blood of laying hens was taken as the supplement proportion of trace elements, and Zn was supplemented depended on NRC recommended level (TLB): (8) inorganic minerals of TLB pattern (IB), (9) organic minerals of TLB pattern (OB). Two weeks were allowed for adjustment to the conditions and then measurements were made over eight weeks. Supplementation of trace elements led to increased daily egg weight (p < 0.05). Patterns of minerals in diets affected the content of liver Mn, pancreas Mn, tibia Mn, and the tissues Se (p < 0.05). Sources of minerals had positive effects on daily egg weight (p < 0.05), the concentrations of liver Fe, kidney Cu, tissues Se (except spleen), and fecal Se (p < 0.05). In conclusion, diet supplemented with the organic trace minerals of 50% NRC-L pattern (OHN) in laying hens promoted optimum laying performance, mineral deposition, and reduced mineral excretion.

RESUMEN

Motivation: The rapid development of next-generation sequencing technology provides an opportunity to study genome-wide DNA methylation at single-base resolution. However, depletion of unmethylated cytosines brings challenges for aligning bisulfite-converted sequencing reads to a large reference. Software tools for aligning methylation reads have not yet been comprehensively evaluated, especially for the widely used reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) that involves enrichment for CpG islands (CGIs). Results: We specially developed a simulator, RRBSsim, for benchmarking analysis of RRBS data. We performed extensive comparison of seven mapping algorithms for methylation analysis in both real and simulated RRBS data. Eighteen lung tumors and matched adjacent tissues were sequenced by the RRBS protocols. Our empirical evaluation found that methylation results were less consistent between software tools for CpG sites with low sequencing depth, medium methylation level, on CGI shores or gene body. These observations were further confirmed by simulations that indicated software tools generally had lower recall of detecting these vulnerable CpG sites and lower precision of estimating methylation levels in these CpG sites. Among the software tools tested, bwa-meth and BS-Seeker2 (bowtie2) are currently our preferred aligners for RRBS data in terms of recall, precision and speed. Existing aligners cannot efficiently handle moderately methylated CpG sites and those CpG sites on CGI shores or gene body. Interpretation of methylation results from these vulnerable CpG sites should be treated with caution. Our study reveals several important features inherent in methylation data, and RRBSsim provides guidance to advance sequence-based methylation data analysis and methodological development. Availability and implementation: RRBSsim is a simulator for benchmarking analysis of RRBS data and its source code is available at https://github.com/xwBio/RRBSsim or https://github.com/xwBio/Docker-RRBSsim. Supplementary information: Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

RESUMEN

Polysaccharides from edible fungi usually exhibit many bioactivities. Our previous studies found that polysaccharide TLH-3 extracted from Tricholoma lobayense possessed noticeable antioxidant activity. To further explore its biological activities, the antioxidant and anti-aging activities of TLH-3 were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The results of antioxidant activity in vitro showed that TLH-3 could enhance the cell viability, reduce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibit oxidative damage induced by tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BHP) in human embryonic lung fibroblasts (HELF) cells. The anti-aging capability was measured in d-galactose (d-gal)-induced aged mice model, and the experimental data showed that TLH-3 significantly inhibited the formation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and raised the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in mice liver and serum (p<0.05). This study suggested that TLH-3 possessed apparent antioxidant and anti-aging activities and could be exploited as a potent dietary supplement to attenuate aging and prevent age-related diseases in humans.
