Vitamin A, also known as retinol, is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays crucial role in various physiological functions In vivo. However, factors such as light, oxygen, and others may impact the stability of VA. To enhance its stability. This study microencapsulated VA, Gelatin, carboxymethyl cellulose, and salt were mixed in a ratio of 5:1:0.1 as the shell material. Additionally, 12% TG and 3.5% sucrose ester were added with core-shell ratio of 1:8. The experimental results indicated that VA microcapsules exhibited an encapsulation efficiency of 81.12%, after 9 weeks of storage this rate decreased to 75.38%, and the encapsulated VA oil did not exhibit extravasation. The addition of an appropriate amount of salt to the shell material enhanced the mechanical properties of the shell material, compared to the shell material without added salt, the leakage of VA in the salt-added sample decreased by 5.8% for 30 min and 14.5% for 60 min. In vitro release experiments showed that after 3 h of incubation in simulated gastric fluid, the microcapsules had an 18.52% release rate. In simulated intestinal fluid, this increased to 66.58%, indicating strong enteric solubility. RESUMEN

Cathepsin B (CTSB) is a key lysosomal protease that plays a crucial role in the development of cancer. This article elucidates the relationship between CTSB and cancer from the perspectives of its structure, function, and role in tumor growth, migration, invasion, metastasis, angiogenesis and autophagy. Further, we summarized the research progress of cancer treatment related drugs targeting CTSB, as well as the potential and advantages of Traditional Chinese medicine in treating tumors by regulating the expression of CTSB.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal activation of astrocytes in the amygdala contributes to anxiety after hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HSR). Nuclear factor κ-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB)-associated epigenetic reprogramming of astrocytic activation is crucial to anxiety. A bioactive monomer derived from Epimedium icariin (ICA) has been reported to modulate NF-κB signaling and astrocytic activation. PURPOSE: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of ICA on post-HSR anxiety disorders and its potential mechanism of action. METHODS: We first induced HSR in mice through a bleeding and re-transfusion model and selectively inhibited and activated astrocytes in the amygdala using chemogenetics. Then, ICA (40 mg/kg) was administered by oral gavage once daily for 21 days. Behavioral, electrophysiological, and pathological changes were assessed after HSR using the light-dark transition test, elevated plus maze, recording of local field potential (LFP), and immunofluorescence assays. RESULTS: Exposure to HSR reduced the duration of the light chamber and attenuated open-arm entries. Moreover, HSR exposure increased the theta oscillation power in the amygdala and upregulated NF-κB p65, H3K27ac, and H3K4me3 expression. Contrarily, chemogenetic inhibition of astrocytes significantly reversed these changes. Chemogenetic inhibition in astrocytes was simulated by ICA, but chemogenetic activation of astrocytes blocked the neuroprotective effects of ICA. CONCLUSION: ICA mitigated anxiety-like behaviors induced by HSR in mice via inhibiting astrocytic activation, which is possibly associated with NF-κB-induced epigenetic reprogramming.

KEY MESSAGE: Integrated phenomics, ionomics, genomics, transcriptomics, and functional analyses present novel insights into the role of pectin demethylation-mediated cell wall Na+ retention in positively regulating salt tolerance in oilseed rape. Genetic variations in salt stress tolerance identified in rapeseed genotypes highlight the complicated regulatory mechanisms. Westar is ubiquitously used as a transgenic receptor cultivar, while ZS11 is widely grown as a high-production and good-quality cultivar. In this study, Westar was found to outperform ZS11 under salt stress. Through cell component isolation, non-invasive micro-test, X-ray energy spectrum analysis, and ionomic profile characterization, pectin demethylation-mediated cell wall Na+ retention was proposed to be a major regulator responsible for differential salt tolerance between Westar and ZS11. Integrated analyses of genome-wide DNA variations, differential expression profiling, and gene co-expression networks identified BnaC9.PME47, encoding a pectin methylesterase, as a positive regulator conferring salt tolerance in rapeseed. BnaC9.PME47, located in two reported QTL regions for salt tolerance, was strongly induced by salt stress and localized on the cell wall. Natural variation of the promoter regions conferred higher expression of BnaC9.PME47 in Westar than in several salt-sensitive rapeseed genotypes. Loss of function of AtPME47 resulted in the hypersensitivity of Arabidopsis plants to salt stress. The integrated multiomics analyses revealed novel insights into pectin demethylation-mediated cell wall Na+ retention in regulating differential salt tolerance in allotetraploid rapeseed genotypes. Furthermore, these analyses have provided key information regarding the rapid dissection of quantitative trait genes responsible for nutrient stress tolerance in plant species with complex genomes.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Whether a combination of exercise and branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation was more beneficial than those given alone in sarcopenia related to liver cirrhosis (LC) is unknown. Widely used smartphone applications provide continuous and easily expandable management of chronic liver disease (CLD). This study is to investigate the effects of unsupervised walking exercise using WeChat combined with BCAA supplementation on skeletal muscle mass and strength in LC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 127 LC patients of Child-Pugh A/B were assigned to group A (BCAA supplements, n=42), group B (walking exercise, n=43) and group C (walking exercise plus BCAA supplements, n=42). Laboratory data, average daily steps, serum BCAA, skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and grip strength were analyzed pre- and 3 months after interventions. RESULTS: Of the 124 patients who completed interventions, albumin and daily steps were significantly increased in all groups (p=0.0001). Post-intervention BCAA were significantly elevated in group A (A vs B, p=0.001) and C (C vs B, p=0.012;). While post-intervention daily steps in group B (B vs A, p=0.0001) and C (C vs A, p=0.0001) were higher. Grip strength (C vs A, p=0.020; C vs B, p=0.036) and SMI (C vs A, p=0.035; C vs B, p=0.012) were increased in group C. Prevalence of sarcopenia was significantly decreased in group C (p=0.015). CONCLUSIONS: A combination of unsupervised walking exercise using smartphone applications and BCAA supplementation might be an effective and safe treatment for cirrhosis patients with Child-Pugh A/B to improve skeletal muscle mass and strength or to prevent progress of sarcopenia.

Although photobiomodulation (PBM) and gamma visual stimulatqion (GVS) have been overwhelmingly explored in the recent time as a possible light stimulation (LS) means of Alzheimer's disease (AD) therapy, their effects have not been assessed at once. In our research, the AD mouse model was stimulated using light with various parameters [continuous wave (PBM) or 40 Hz pulsed visible LED (GVS) or 40 Hz pulsed 808 nm LED (PBM and GVS treatment)]]. The brain slices collected from the LS treated AD model mice were evaluated using (i) fluorescence microscopy to image thioflavine-S labeled amy-loid-ß (Aß) plaques (the main hallmark of AD), or (ii) two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) imaging of unlabeled Aß plaques, showing that the amount of Aß plaques was reduced after LS treatment. The imaging results correlated well with the results of Morris water maze (MWM) test, which demonstrated that the spatial learning and memory abilities of LS treated mice were noticeably higher than those of untreated mice. The LS effect was also assessed by in vivo nonlinear optical imaging, revealing that the cerebral amyloid angiopathy decreased spe-cifically as a result of 40 Hz pulsed 808 nm irradiation, on the contrary, the angiopathy reversed after visible 40 Hz pulsed light treatment. The obtained results provide useful reference for further optimization of the LS (PBM or GVS) parameters to achieve efficient phototherapy of AD.

Intragastric administration of the total sesterterpenoid extract (TSE) of medicinal plant Leucosceptrum canum at 2.5 g/kg dose protected mice from LPS-induced sepsis. Phytochemical investigation led to the isolation and identification of 47 leucosceptrane sesterterpenoids (1-47) including 30 new compounds (1-30) with complicated oxygenation patterns. Biological screening indicated their immunosuppressive activity via inhibiting IFN-γ secretion and/or proliferation of T cells with different potencies. Mechanism study of compounds 9, 25, and 32 revealed that they inhibited the activations of AKT-mTOR, JNK, p38 MAPK or ERK pathway in T cells and macrophages. In addition, compounds 9 and 25 induced G0/G1 cell arrest of T cells. The major component, leucosceptroid N (32), significantly lowered the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in peripheral blood serum, and ameliorated the multiorgan damages of LPS-induced sepsis mice at 25 mg/kg dose. These findings suggest that leucosceptrane sesterterpenoids are a new type of potential immunosuppressive agents for sepsis treatment.

This study explored the flower visiting behaviors and pollination abilities of mason bees (Osmia excavata Alfken (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae)), bumble bees (Bombus terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758) (Hymenoptera: Apidae)), and Italian honey bees (Apis mellifera ligustica Spinola (Hymenoptera: Apidae)) in apple orchards in early spring in Jinan (located in the central region of Shandong) and Yantai (located in the Peninsula of Shandong). We compared the pollen collection patterns, flower visiting behavior, flying speed, and effects on apple pollination of the 3 types of bees. The frequencies of flower visits were significantly higher for mason bees (12.89/min in Jinan and 10.63/min in Yantai) than bumble bees and Italian honey bees in the 2 regions. The single flower residence times were significantly higher for Italian honey bees (8.22 s in Jinan and 9.43 s in Yantai), but Italian honey bees were most affected by the climate. The 3 bees differed significantly in terms of the amount of apple pollen collected and their effects on the fruit setting rate in apples (mason bees > bumble bees > Italian honey bees). The results showed that the mason bee was the most suitable pollinating species for spring apple orchards; Bumble bees were more suitable as alternative pollinators during cloudy and low temperatures; Italian honey bees were able to take advantage of their large number of worker bees in sunny and warm weather. Compared to individual bee species, a combination of 2 or 3 species of bees might be more advantageous in dealing with complex and variable weather conditions.

Rosa roxburghii Tratt is a traditional Chinese plant that has been used to treat different inflammatory diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of action of Rosa roxburghii Tratt extract (RRTE) against ulcerative colitis (UC) using network pharmacology and experimental validation. HPLC-Q/Orbitrap MS was used to rapidly identify the substances contained in RRTE after extracting the active components from the fruit. Then, network pharmacology combined with molecular docking was used to explore the critical target and potential mechanism of RRTE against UC using the active ingredients in RRTE as the research object. Data are presented in a visual manner. Finally, the pharmacological effects of RRTE in alleviating UC were further verified using a DSS-induced UC model of NCM460. The results showed that 25 components in RRTE were identified. A total of 250 targets of the active components and 5376 targets associated with UC were collected. Furthermore, a systematic analysis of the Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) networks suggests that epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), phosphoinositide-3-kinase regulatory subunit 1 (PIK3R1), and serine/threonine kinase 1 (AKT1) are critical targets for RRTE in the treatment of UC. A comprehensive regulatory network analysis showed that RRTE alleviated UC through the EGFR-mediated PI3K/Akt pathway, and molecular docking showed that active components could strongly bind to EGFR, PIK3R1, and AKT1. In addition, RRTE alleviated dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS)-induced cell injury and significantly decreased the protein expression levels of EGFR, PIK3R1, and p-AKT in NCM460 cells in vitro. Furthermore, RRTE significantly regulated the expression of the apoptosis-related proteins Apoptotic protease-activating factor 1 (Apaf1), cleaved caspase-3, B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl2), and Bcl2 associated X protein (Bax). In conclusion, the components of RRTE are complex, and RRTE can relieve UC through the EGFR-mediated PI3K/Akt pathway.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) can affect health and growth performance of pigs, resulting in significant economic losses in swine production. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of glycyrrhizic acid combined with compound probiotics, i.e. Enterococcus faecalis plus Saccharomyces cerevisiae (GAP) on improving growth performance, intestinal health and its fecal microbiota composition change of piglets challenged with DON. A total of 160 42-day-old weaned piglets (Landrace × Large White) were used and the experimental period was 28 d. The results showed that supplementing GAP in the diet significantly improved the growth performance of piglets challenged with DON and alleviate DON-induced intestinal damage by reducing ALT, AST and LDH concentrations in serum, increasing the morphological parameters of jejunum, and decreasing DON residues in serum, liver and feces. Moreover, GAP could significantly decrease the expressions of inflammation and apoptosis genes and proteins (IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, COX-2, Bax, Bcl-2 and Caspase 3), and increase the expressions of tight-junction proteins and nutrient transport factor genes and proteins (ZO-1, Occludin, Claudin-1, ASCT2 and PePT1). In addition, it was also found that GAP supplementation could significantly increase the diversity of gut microbiota, maintain microbial flora balance and promote piglet growth by significantly increasing the abundance of beneficial bacterium such as Lactobacillus and reducing the abundance of harmful bacterium such as Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1. In conclusion, GAP addition to piglet diets contaminated with DON could significantly promote the health and growth performance of piglets though alleviating DON-induced hazards. This study provided a theoretical basis for the application of GAP to alleviate DON toxicity for animals.

Radiotherapy is the major treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The radioresistance and toxicity are the main obstacles that leading to therapeutic failure and poor prognosis. Oncogenic mutation, cancer stem cells (CSCs), tumor hypoxia, DNA damage repair, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and tumor microenvironment (TME) may dominate the occurrence of radioresistance at different stages of radiotherapy. Chemotherapy drugs, targeted drugs, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are combined with radiotherapy to treat NSCLC to improve the efficacy. This article reviews the potential mechanism of radioresistance in NSCLC, and discusses the current drug research to overcome radioresistance and the advantages of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in improving the efficacy and reducing the toxicity of radiotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of shuanggu yitong acupuncture therapy (the therapy for both replenishment and unblocking) combined with domperidone on diabetic gastroparesis (DGP) of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency pattern and explore its effect mechanism. METHODS: DGP patients differentiated as liver stagnation and spleen deficiency pattern were divided into a control group (n=42) and an observation group (n=42) according to the random number table. The patients in the control group took domperidone tablets orally, 10 mg each time, 3 times a day for 28 days. In the observation group, on the base of the treatment as the control group, shuanggu yitong acupuncture therapy was applied to Baihui (GV20), Shenting (GV24), Zhongwan (CV12), bilateral Zusanli (ST36), Hegu (LI4)and Taichong (LR3), stimulated for 30 min in each treatment. Acupuncture was given once daily, 3 times a weeks for 28 days consecutively. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), 2-hour postprandial blood glucose (2 h PBG) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were detected before and after treatment in the patients of two groups separately. The score of symptom severity index of gastroparesis (GCSI), traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome score and gastric emptying rate were assessed in the patients of two groups. Using ELISA, radioimmunoassay and colorimentry methods, the contents of motilin in plasma, gastrin, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interferon-gamma (INF-γ) in serum, as well as the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the serum were determined in the two groups. The clinical curative effect was evaluated. RESULTS: After treatment, the levels of FBG, 2 h PBG and HbA1c, the scores of GCSI and TCM syndrome, the contents of motilin in plasma, gastrin, TNF-α and MDA, as well as the activity of ROS in serum were all reduced when compared with those before treatment in each group (P<0.05, P<0.01), while gastric emptying rate and SOD activity in the serum were higher than those before treatment (P<0.05, P<0.01). After treatment, the serological content of INF-γ was lower than that before treatment in the control group (P<0.05), and the contents of IL-6 and IL-1ß were reduced than those before treatment in the observation group (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the levels of FBG, 2 h PBG and HbA1c, the scores of GCSI and TCM symptoms, the contents of motilin in plasma, gastrin, TNF-α, MDA, IL-6 and IL-1ß, and the activity of ROS in serum in the observation group were all lower significantly (P<0.05, P<0.01), while the SOD activity and gastric emptying rate in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05, P<0.01). The total effective rate was 90.5% (38/42) in the observation group, better than the control group (73.8%, 31/42, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Shuanggu yitong acupuncture therapy combined with domperidone remarkably relieves the clinical symptoms and improves the gastric emptying rate, effectively reduces motilin and gastrin and regulates oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in the patients with DGP of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency.

Currently, Mikania micrantha (M. micrantha) has invaded Guangdong, Guangxi and other provinces in China, causing serious harm to the forests of southeastern China. Soil microorganisms play an important role in the establishment of M. micrantha invasion, affecting plant productivity, community dynamics, and ecosystem function. However, at present, how M. micrantha invasion affects soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus phase functional genes and the environmental factors that cause gene expression changes remain unclear, especially in subtropical forest ecosystems. This study was conducted in Xiangtoushan National Forest Park in Guangdong Province to compare the changes in soil nutrients and microorganisms after M. micrantha invasion of a forest. The microbial community composition and metabolic function were explored by metagenome sequencing. Our results showed that after M. micrantha invasion, the soil was more suitable for the growth of gram-positive bacteria (Gemmatimonadetes). In addition, the soil microbial community structure and enzyme activity increased significantly after M. micrantha invasion. Correlation analysis and Mantel test results suggested that total phosphorus (TP), nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), and soil dissolved organic matter (DOM; DOC and DON), were the strong correlates of soil microbial nitrogen functional genes, while soil organic matter (SOM), soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and available phosphorus (Soil-AP) were strongly correlated with the expression of soil microbial phosphorus functional gene. Mikania micrantha invasion alters soil nutrients, microbial community composition and metabolic function in subtropical forests, creates a more favorable growth environment, and may form a positive feedback process conducive to M. micrantha invasion.

RESUMEN

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Zhi-zi-chi decoction (ZZCD), from "Treatise on Febrile Diseases", is a typical traditional Chinese medicine herb pair, which consists of Gardeniae Fructus (GF) and Semen Sojae Praeparatu (SSP). In clinical research, ZZCD was widely used to fight depression, remove annoyance. Many studies have reported that gut microbiota is critical target for the influence of depress through gut-brain axis, and our previously studies have found that ZZCD exhibiting antidepressant effect was through the gut-brain axis. However, the specific mechanism by which gut microbiota mediates the pharmacokinetics parameters of active compounds from ZZCD during the process of depression treatment has not yet been studied. AIM OF THE STUDY: To explore the differences in pharmacokinetics characters of bioactive iridoids from ZZCD and study the changes of gut microbiota at different stages of depression with the personalized medicine of ZZCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A new strategy exploring the relationship among disease phenotypes (D), intestinal microbiota (I), enzymes (E) and traits of metabolism (T) named as "DIET" was established. Firstly, a fast, selective and sensitive ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS/MS) was established and validated to quality the main bioactive compounds from ZZCD and compare the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of different iridoids prototypes and metabolites from ZZCD between normal and chronic unpredictable mild stress rats. Subsequently, the activity of corresponding metabolic enzymes of anti-depressive compounds, ß-glucosidases and sulfotransferases, were analyzed by ρ-nitrophenyl-ß -D-glucopyranoside and sulfotransferases ELISA kits, respectively. Finally, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was adopt to analyze intestinal bacteria composition for the treatment of depression by ZZCD. RESULTS: The antidepressant effect of ZZCD was promoted due to the increased exposures and reduced eliminations of anti-depressive compounds, especially geniposide and genipin 1-gentiobioside, under the depression state. With the ZZCD treatment, the depression was improved, but the exposures of anti-depressive compounds from ZZCD gradually decreased. Meanwhile, there were the corresponding decreased trends on the activity of ß-glucosidases and sulfotransferases. With the consumption of ZZDC and the improvement of depression, the exposures of anti-depressive iridoid glycosides decreased and the activity of metabolism enzymes restored. Meanwhile, the dysbiosis of pathogenic bacteria (Bacteroidota) induced by depression was ameliorated and the probiotics (Firmicutes) at the phylum and genus level raised, the two phyla are closely related to the production of ß-glucosidase and sulfotransferases. CONCLUSIONS: It is the first proposed that ZZCD could personalized to treat depression at different stages targeting gut microbiota and gut microbiome could emerged as a potential diagnostic and therapeutic biomarker in depression.

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effectiveness of compound feed additive (CFA) to replace antibiotics for broiler production. A total of 350 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into 7 groups, 5 replications in each group and 10 broilers in each replication. Group A was the control; group B was supplemented with 75 mg/kg chlortetracycline; groups C, D, and E were supplemented with 0.03, 0.06, and 0.09% CFA including glucose oxidase, curcumin, and Lactobacillus acidophilus; group F was supplemented with 0.03% CFA plus 0.50% glucose; group G was supplemented with 0.50% glucose. The feeding period was divided into the early (1-21 d) and later stages (22-42 d). The results showed that average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion rate (F/G) in group F in later stage were significantly better than those in the control and antibiotic groups; the diarrhea rates in the groups containing CFA in both stages was significantly lower than that in the control and antibiotic groups, indicating that CFA was better than antibiotics to improve growth and decrease diarrhea rate for broilers. Pathogenic E. coli challenge significantly increased diarrhea rates and decreased ADG for broilers; however, CFA addition could alleviate the above negative responses by increasing gut Lactobacillus abundance and decreasing Shigella abundance. It can be concluded that CFA can replace antibiotics to regulate intestinal microbiota, reduce diarrhea rate, and improve broiler growth.

The effects of interactions between the toxic and essential metal mixtures on cognitive function are poorly understood. This study aims to identify the joint association of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) with cognitive function in older adults and the moderating role of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) in this association. This study included 1000 community-dwelling older adults. Cognitive function was assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Blood concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Se, Zn, and Cu were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Linear regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were applied to assess the individual and joint associations of As, Cd, and Pb with cognitive function and to examine whether Se, Zn, and Cu (individually and as a mixture) modified these associations. In the adjusted single-metal models, both Cd (ß = - 0.37, 95% CI: - 0.73 to - 0.01) and Pb (ß = - 0.44, 95% CI: - 0.86 to - 0.02) were associated with MMSE scores, while Se (ß = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.30 to 1.13) exhibited a positive relationship with MMSE scores. Univariate exposure-response functions from BKMR models showed similar results. Moreover, the toxic metal mixture (As, Cd, and Pb) exhibited a significant negative association with MMSE scores in a dose-response pattern, with Pb being the greatest contributor within the mixture. The negative association of Pb alone or the toxic metal mixture with MMSE scores became weaker at higher concentrations of Se within its normal range, especially when Se levels were greater than the median (89.18 µg/L). Our findings support that Se can attenuate the negative associations of exposure to single Pb or the As, Cd, and Pb mixtures with cognitive function. Future prospective studies are needed to replicate our findings.

RESUMEN

Systematic phytochemical investigation on the Mongolian medicinal herb Lomatogonium carinthiacum led to the isolation of 12 monoterpenoids including three new secoiridoids (1, 2 and 4) and one new iridoid glycoside (13), one new monoterpenoid alkaloid (3), and three new sesquiterpenoids (14-16). Comprehensive spectroscopic analysis (including 1D and 2D NMR, and HRESIMS) and quantum chemistry computations (including ECD and NMR calculations) were applied to elucidate their structures. Weak immunosuppressive activities were observed for the new isolates via inhibiting T cell proliferation and cytokine IFN-γ secretion in vitro.

The past decades have witnessed the rational design of novel functional nanomaterials and the potential to revolutionize many applications. With the increasing focus on electronic biological processes, novel photovoltaic nanomaterials are highly expectable for empowering new therapeutic strategies such as establishing a link between endogenous electric field (EEF) and electrotherapy. Compared to traditional invasive stimulation, the light-initiating strategy has the advantages of non-invasion, non-power supply, and precise controllability. Whereas, common photoactivated materials require short-wavelength light excitation accompanied by poor tissue penetration and biohazard. Herein, by the construction of p-n heterostructured Bi2 S3 /TiO2 /rGO (BTG) nanoparticles, broadener light absorption and higher light conversion than regular UV excitation are realized. Simultaneously, the photoelectric performance of BTG heterostructure, as well as the synergistic effect of Bi2 S3 morphology, are revealed. Besides, the rationally designed biomimetic hydrogel matrix consisting of collagen and hyaluronic acid provides appropriate bioactivity, interface adhesion, mechanical matching, and electron transfer. Therefore, the photovoltaic BTG-loaded matrix provides a platform of light-driven electrical stimulation, coupling the EEF to modulate the electrophysiological and regeneration microenvironment. The implementation of photoelectric stimulation holds broad prospects for non-drug therapy and electrical-related biological process modulation including osseointegration, nerve regeneration, electronic skin, and wound healing.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a widespread mycotoxin that affects the intestinal health of animals and humans. In the present study, we performed RNA-sequencing and 16S rRNA sequencing in piglets after DON and glycyrrhizic acid and compound probiotics (GAP) supplementation to determine the changes in intestinal transcriptome and microbiota. Transcriptome results indicated that DON exposure altered intestinal gene expression involved in nutrient transport and metabolism. Genes related to lipid metabolism, such as PLIN1, PLIN4, ADIPOQ, and FABP4 in the intestine, were significantly decreased by DON exposure, while their expressions were significantly increased after GAP supplementation. KEGG enrichment analysis showed that GAP supplementation promoted intestinal digestion and absorption of proteins, fats, vitamins, and other nutrients. Results of gut microbiota composition showed that GAP supplementation significantly improved the diversity of gut microbiota. DON exposure significantly increased Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacillus abundances and decreased Firmicutes, Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus abundances; however, dietary supplementation with GAP observably recovered their abundances to normal. In addition, predictive functions by PICRUSt analysis showed that DON exposure decreased lipid metabolism, whereas GAP supplementation increased immune system. This result demonstrated that dietary exposure to DON altered the intestinal gene expressions related to nutrient metabolism and induced disturbances of intestinal microbiota, while supplementing GAP to DON-contaminated diets could improve intestinal health for piglets.
