Biological treatment that utilizes microalgae technology has demonstrated outstanding efficacy in the wastewater purification and nutrients recovery. However, the high turbidity of the digested piggery wastewater (DPW) leads to serious light attenuation and the culture mode of suspended microalgae results in a huge landing area. Thus, to overcome light attenuation in DPW, a non-immersed titled zigzag microalgae biofilm was constructed by attaching it onto a porous cotton cloth. As a result, the light could directly irradiate microalgae biofilm that attached on both sides of the cotton cloth, and the microalgal biofilm area was up to 6 m2 per bioreactor landing area. When the non-immersed zigzag microalgae biofilm bioreactor (N-Z-MBP) was used to treat wastewater with an ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration of 362 mg L-1, the NH4+-N was completely removed in just 5 days and the maximum growth rate of microalgae biofilm reached 7.02 g m-2 d-1. After 21 days of long-term sequencing batch operation for the N-Z-MBP, the biomass density of the biofilm reached 52 g m-2 and remained at this high value for the next 14 days. Most importantly, during the 35 days' running, the NH4+ -N maximum removal rate of single batch reached up to 65 mg L-1 d-1 and its concentration in the effluent was always below the discharge standard value (80 mg L-1 form GB18596-2001 of China) and total phosphorus was completely removed in each batch. Furthermore, the biomass concentration of microalgae cells in the effluent of the N-Z-MBP was almost zero, indicating that the non-submerged biofilm achieved in situ separation of microalgae from the wastewater. This work suggests that the N-Z-MBP can effectively purify DPW over a long period, providing a possible strategy to treat wastewater with high ammonia nitrogen and high turbidity.

The lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) is the largest aquatic vegetable in Asia. The lotus seedpod (LS) is an inedible part of the mature flower receptacle of the lotus plant. However, the polysaccharide isolated from the receptacle has been less studied. The purification of LS resulted in two polysaccharides (LSP-1 and LSP-2). Both polysaccharides were found to be medium-sized HG pectin, with a Mw of 74 kDa. Their structures were elucidated via GC-MS and NMR spectrum and proposed as the repeating sugar units of GalA connected via α-1,4-glycosidic linkage, with LSP-1 having a higher degree of esterification. They have certain content of antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities. The esterification of HG pectin would have an adverse effect on these activities. Furthermore, the degradation pattern and kinetics of LSPs by pectinase conformed to the Michaelis-Menten model. There is a large amount of LS, resulting from the by-product of locus seed production, and thus a promising source for the isolation of the polysaccharide. The findings of the structure, bioactivities, and degradation property provide the chemical basis for their applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

The development of microalgae-bacteria symbiosis for treating wastewater is flourishing owing to its high biomass productivity and exceptional ability to purify contaminants. A nature-selected microalgae-bacteria symbiosis, mainly consisting of Dictyosphaerium and Pseudomonas, was used to treat oxytetracycline (OTC), ofloxacin (OFLX), and antibiotic-containing swine wastewater. Increased antibiotic concentration gradually reduced biomass productivity and intricately changed symbiosis composition, while 1 mg/L OTC accelerated the growth of symbiosis. The symbiosis biomass productivity reached 3.4-3.5 g/L (5.7-15.3 % protein, 18.4-39.3 % carbohydrate, and 2.1-3.9 % chlorophyll) when cultured in antibiotic-containing swine wastewater. The symbiosis displayed an excellent capacity to remove 76.3-83.4 % chemical oxygen demand, 53.5-62.4 % total ammonia nitrogen, 97.5-100.0 % total phosphorus, 96.3-100.0 % OTC, and 32.8-60.1 % OFLX in swine wastewater. The microbial community analysis revealed that the existence of OTC/OFLX increased the richness and evenness of microalgae but reduced bacteria species in microalgae-bacteria, and the toxicity of OFLX to bacteria was stronger than that of OTC.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension patients often suffered from insomnia problems which lowered the quality of life. Studies have shown that acupuncture is effective to treat perimenopausal and cancer-related insomnia. However, there is a lack of randomized controlled trials to support the effectiveness of acupuncture on insomnia of hypertension patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study is a randomized, double-blind (patients and evaluators), and placebo-controlled clinical trial to investigate the effect of acupuncture in hypertension patients' insomnia management. We will recruit 158 hypertension patients suffering from insomnia in Bao'an People's Hospital, Shenzhen and randomly assign them into treatment group (antihypertensive drugsâ+âacupuncture) and control group (antihypertensive drugsâ+âsham acupuncture) in a 1:1 ratio. The patients will receive acupuncture 3 times a week for 12âweeks, and then a 6-months follow-up will be conducted after the treatment. The primary outcome is the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The secondary outcomes include sleep parameters, blood pressure dropping, sleeping pill dosage, Rating Depression Scale score, and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale score. The primary outcome will be evaluated at baseline, 4, 8, and 12âweeks, and 1, 3, and 6âmonths following the end of treatment. The secondary outcomes will be assessed at baseline and 12âweeks of the treatment period.

Condensed deposition favors biochemical analysis, bioassays, and clinical diagnosis, but the existing strategies may suffer from low resolution, inaccurate control, cross-contamination, or miscellaneous apparatus. Herein, we propose a noncontact light strategy to enable the condensed deposition for droplet evaporative crystallization, in which the photothermal effect of a focused infrared laser is employed to induce intense evaporation. Due to the localized heating effect, not only can the droplet evaporative crystallization on the hydrophobic substrate be promoted, but also the resultant intensified Marangoni flow enables the movement of the early-formed crystals, preventing the pinning of the triple-phase contact line. Synergy of the Marangoni flow and nonuniform evaporation makes the solutes tend to accumulate near the focused light beam region, which facilitates the condensed deposition. More importantly, this light strategy not only enables condensed deposition on the hydrophobic surface with low hysteresis, but also works successfully on the hydrophilic substrate with high hysteresis via adjusting input laser power. It is demonstrated that the light strategy proposed in the present study has great potential for relevant applications.

The anaerobic digestion of wastewater rich in volatile fatty acids (VFAs) provides a sustainable approach for methane production whilst reducing environmental pollution. However, the anaerobic digestion of VFAs may not be stable during long-term operation under a short hydraulic retention time. In this study, conductive carbon cloth was supplemented to investigate the impacts on the anaerobic digestion of VFAs in wastewater sourced from dark fermentation. The results demonstrated that the failure of anaerobic digestion could be avoided when carbon cloth was supplemented. In the stable stage, the methane production rate with carbon cloth supplementation was improved by 200-260%, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was significantly enhanced compared with that in the control without carbon cloth. The relative abundance of potential exoelectrogens on the carbon cloth was increased by up to 8-fold compared with that in the suspension. Electrotrophic methanogens on the carbon cloth were enriched by 4.2-17.2% compared with those in the suspension. The genera Ercella and Petrimonas along with the methanogenic archaea Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina on the carbon cloth may facilitate direct interspecies electron transfer, thereby enhancing methane production.

Natural soundscapes have beneficial effects on the perceived restorativeness of an environment. This study examines the effect of birdsong, a common natural soundscape, on perceived restorativeness in Harbin Sun Island Park in China. Eight sites were selected and a series of questionnaire surveys on perceived restorativeness soundscape scale (PRSS) of four birdsong types were conducted during summer and winter. Two-hundred and forty respondents participated in this survey. Analysis of the survey results shows that different types of birdsong have different perceived restorativeness effects in different seasons. Crow birdsong has the worst effect on the perceived restorativeness in both summer and winter. Moreover, sound comfort and preference are significantly associated with the perceived restorativeness. The perceived restorativeness soundscape is best when birdsong is at a height of 4 m rather than 0.5 m or 2 m. The demographic/social factors of age, education, and stress level are all correlated with perceived restorativeness. There are suggestions for urban park design, especially with constructed natural elements. Creating a suitable habitat for multiple species of birds will improve perceived restorativeness. Moreover, appropriate activities should be provided in city parks to ensure restorativeness environments, especially for subjects with high levels of education and stress.

Green spaces in cities and urban parks serve as central areas for mental restoration and relieving pressure, and attention to soundscapes for their mental health benefits has become more prevalent. Birdsongs are perceived to enhance the restorative benefits of urban parks. This study examines Harbin Sun Island Park, the main bird habitat in the city of Harbin with numerous types of landscapes. We used space syntax to select the appropriate path space as a carrier and the pixel grid method to quantify path space shapes. A correlation analysis of field data was also used to explore the perceived restorative effects of birdsongs heard in urban parks using scales detailing the perceived restorative effects of various visual and auditory stimuli. The results show that soundscapes can significantly improve perceived recovery benefits, and that hearing birdsongs can significantly improve the perceived restorative benefits of wetland paths; the sky index of a tour path showed a significantly negative correlation with each feature (i.e., the four featured dimensions of "charm", "escape", "ductility" and "compatibility" included in the recovery scale), and the soft/hard ratio showed a significantly negative correlation with each studied feature. When the sky index ranged from 13-36%, tree coverage of the vertical coverage range was 30.28-38.6%, and when the soft/hard ratio ranged from 5-21, the perceived recovery benefit was strongest.

The objective of this short communication was the relationship between vitamin D and precocious puberty (PP). In this study, a comprehensive search of multiple databases was performed to identify studies focused on the association between vitamin D deficiency and PP. Studies that compared serum vitamin D levels between patients with PP and controls were selected for the systematic meta-analysis. The main outcome was the mean difference in serum vitamin D levels between PP and controls. Vitamin D-deficient subjects were more likely to develop PP. Our findings suggest that PP may be linked to vitamin D deficiency. Thus, providing supplements of vitamin D to PP patients may improve their nutritional status and prevent diseases. But, the amount of vitamin D required is uncertain, so it is important to be careful when taking vitamin D supplements.

In the course of our ongoing studies to discover bioactive chemical constituents from plants in the genus Isodon, two new diterpenes, kunminolide A (1) and rabdokunmin F (2) were isolated from the leaves of the medicinal plant Isodon interruptus. Kunminolide A (1) is a novel abietane-like diterpene with a novel skeleton, herein designated as 9, 10-seco-neoabietane. Rabdokunmin F (2) is an ent-kaurene diterpene with C-18 oxidized to a carboxylic acid group. The structures were determined by spectroscopic means including analysis of 1D- and 2D-NMR spectral data. Crystals of 1 obtained from methanol were suitable for X-ray analysis, which confirmed the chemical structure. Kunminolide A (1) demonstrated chemopreventive potential by inducing QR1 activity with a CD value of 14.3 µM, and rabdokunmin F (2) was found to have cytotoxic activities with IC50 values in the range of 1.1-3.0 µM.

A novel self-adaptive microalgae photobioreactor using anion exchange membranes (AEM-PBR) for continuous supply of nutrients was proposed to improve microalgae biomass production. The introduction of anion exchange membranes to the PBR can realize continuous supply of nutrients at desired rates, which is beneficial to the growth of microalgae. The results showed that the maximum biomass concentration obtained in the AEM-PBR under continuous supply of nitrogen at an average rate of 19.0mgN/L/d was 2.98g/L, which was 129.2% higher than that (1.30g/L) in a PBR with all the nitrogen supplied in batch at initial. In addition, the feeding rates of nitrogen and phosphorus were optimized in the AEM-PBR to maximize biomass production. The maximum biomass concentration of 4.38g/L was obtained under synergistic regulation of nitrogen and phosphorus feeding rates at 19.0mgN/L/d and 4.2mgP/L/d. The AEM-PBR demonstrates a promising approach for high-density cultivation of microalgae.

BACKGROUND: The 3D structure and functions of ENPP4, a protein expressed on the surface of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)-activated macrophages, are unknown. In this study, we analyzed the 3D structure of ENPP4 and determined its tumoricidal effects on MCA207 cells. RESULTS: Homology modeling showed that Arg305, Tyr341, Asn291, and Asn295 are important residues in substrate, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), binding. A molecular dynamics study was also carried out to study the stability of ENPP4 (including zinc atoms) as well as its ligand-enzyme complex. BCG increased ENPP4 expression in macrophages, and specific blocking of ENPP4 in BCG-activated macrophages (BAMs) significantly reduced their cytotoxicity against MCA207 cells. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that zinc remains inside the ENPP4 protein, a BCG activated tumoricidal macrophage protein, throughout the simulation. Important information for the design of new inhibitors was obtained.

Although established adult smokers with long histories of nicotine dependence have lower neural tissue volume than non-smokers, it is not clear if lower regional brain volume is also observed in younger, less established smokers. The primary goal of this study was to investigate neural tissue volume in a large group of smokers and non-smokers, with a secondary goal of measuring the impact of age on these effects. We used voxel-based morphometry to compare regional gray matter volume in 118 individuals (59 smokers, 59 age- and gender-matched non-smokers). Younger smokers had significantly lower gray matter volume in the left thalamus and the left amygdala than their non-smoking peers (family-wise error-corrected clusters, P < 0.05). There was no correlation between smoking use variables and tissue volume among younger smokers. Established smokers had significantly lower gray matter volume than age-matched non-smokers in the insula, parahippocampal gyrus and pallidum. Medial prefrontal cortex gray matter volume was negatively correlated with pack-years of smoking among the established smokers, but not the younger smokers. These data reveal that regional tissue volume differences are not limited exclusively to established smokers. Deficits in young adults indicate that cigarette smoking may either be deleterious to the thalamus and amygdala at an earlier age than previously reported, or that pre-existing differences in these areas may predispose individuals to the development of nicotine dependence.

A new benzodiazepine alkaloid containing terminal cyano group has been isolated from a mangrove endophytic fungus, Penicillium 299#. Structure elucidation was determined by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and the absolute configuration was determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD). The new compound showed no cytotoxic activities in vitro against human cancer lines MDA-MB-435, HepG2, HCT-116, and Calu-3.

The monetary incentive delay (MID) task is a widely used probe for isolating neural circuitry in the human brain associated with incentive motivation. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, 82 young adults, characterized along dimensions of impulsive sensation seeking, completed a MID task. fMRI and behavioral incentive functions were decomposed into incentive valence and magnitude parameters, which were used as predictors in linear regression to determine whether mesolimbic response is associated with problem drinking and recent alcohol use. Alcohol use was best explained by higher fMRI response to anticipation of losses and feedback on high gains in the thalamus. In contrast, problem drinking was best explained by reduced sensitivity to large incentive values in mesolimbic regions in the anticipation phase and increased sensitivity to small incentive values in the dorsal caudate nucleus in the feedback phase. Altered fMRI responses to monetary incentives in mesolimbic circuitry, particularly those alterations associated with problem drinking, may serve as potential early indicators of substance abuse trajectories.

Three new metabolites (compounds 1-2 and 6), one azaphilone, and two meroterpenes, together with eleven known compounds have been isolated from a mangrove endophytic fungus, Penicillium 303#. Structure elucidation was achieved by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD). Cytotoxic activities of new compounds 1-2 and 6 and compound 7were evaluated in vitro against human cancer lines MDA-MB-435, HepG2, HCT-116, and A549. Those compounds showed weak to moderate cytotoxic activities.

Diabetes and obesity are complex diseases associated with insulin resistance and fatty liver. The latter is characterized by dysregulation of the Akt, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and IGF-I pathways and expression of microRNAs (miRNAs). In China, multicomponent traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used to treat diabetes for centuries. In this study, we used a three-herb, berberine-containing TCM to treat male Zucker diabetic fatty rats. TCM showed sustained glucose-lowering effects for 1 week after a single-dose treatment. Two-week treatment attenuated insulin resistance and fatty degeneration, with hepatocyte regeneration lasting for 1 month posttreatment. These beneficial effects persisted for 1 year after 1-month treatment. Two-week treatment with TCM was associated with activation of AMPK, Akt, and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein (IGFBP)1 pathways, with downregulation of miR29-b and expression of a gene network implicated in cell cycle, intermediary, and NADPH metabolism with normalization of CYP7a1 and IGFBP1 expression. These concerted changes in mRNA, miRNA, and proteins may explain the sustained effects of TCM in favor of cell survival, increased glucose uptake, and lipid oxidation/catabolism with improved insulin sensitivity and liver regeneration. These novel findings suggest that multicomponent TCM may be a useful tool to unravel genome regulation and expression in complex diseases.

In an earlier study, we found PBP inhibited the progress of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA). This study was aimed at evaluating the inhibitory effects of PBP in terms of NF-κB activation by using immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent technique in vitro and in vivo. IL-1ß and TNF-α in serum were detected by method of ELISA. Immunofluorescent results showed that PBP inhibited NF-κB p65 translocation into nucleus. In vivo imaging showed that treatment with PBP decreased the enzyme labeling signal of NF-κB p65. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that PBP suppressed production of NF-κB p65 subunit in the joints and attenuated the productions of IL-1ß and TNF-α in serum from AA. Moreover, NF-κB p65 nucleus translocation was prevented by simultaneous incubation with PBP and PGE2 was decreased by PBP through a feedback cycle. We report the first confirmation of the mimotope of PGE2 receptor EP4 modulatory action.

OBJECTIVE: To study the chemical constituents from Fructus Toosendan. METHODS: Column chromatographic techniques were used for isolation and purification of chemical constituents of the plant and the structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis. RESULTS: Seven compounds were obtained and identified extract form Fructus Toosendan, and their structures were elucidated as ferulic acid (1), vanillic acid (2), caffeic acid (3), protocatechuic acid (4), kaempferol (5), daidzein (6), clematine (7). CONCLUSION: Compounds 3-7 are isolated from the genus and compound 2 is obtained from this plant for the first time.

OBJECTIVE: To probe into eliminating action of mild moxibustion combined with cupping therapy on athletic fatigue. METHODS: Observe changes of serum creatine kinase activity in gym-athletes with once great intensity training or periodic great intensity training, and the interfering effect of mild moxibustion combined with cupping therapy. RESULTS: The mild moxibustion combined with cupping therapy has a significant promoting action on recovery of the increased serum creatine kinase activity induced by once great intensity training or periodic great intensity training in gym-athletes. CONCLUSION: The method has a better action of eliminating athletic fatigue.
