RESUMEN

Blood stasis syndrome (BSS) has persistent health risks; however, its pathogenesis remains elusive. This obscurity may result in missed opportunities for early intervention, increased susceptibility to chronic diseases, and reduced accuracy and efficacy of treatments. Metabolomics, employing the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) strategy, presents distinct advantages in biomarker discovery and unraveling molecular mechanisms. Nonetheless, the challenge is to develop efficient matrices for high-sensitivity and high-throughput analysis of diverse potential biomarkers in complex biosamples. This work utilized nitrogen-doped porous transition metal carbides and nitrides (NP-MXene) as a MALDI matrix to delve into the molecular mechanisms underlying BSS pathogenesis. Structural optimization yielded heightened peak sensitivity (by 1.49-fold) and increased peak numbers (by 1.16-fold) in clinical biosamples. Validation with animal models and clinical serum biosamples revealed significant differences in metabolic fingerprints between BSS and control groups, achieving an overall diagnostic efficacy of 0.905 (95% CI, 0.76-0.979). Prostaglandin F2α was identified as a potential biomarker (diagnostics efficiency of 0.711, specificity = 0.7, sensitivity = 0.6), and pathway enrichment analysis disclosed disruptions in arachidonic acid metabolism in BSS. This innovative approach not only advances comprehension of BSS pathogenesis, but also provides valuable insights for personalized treatment and diagnostic precision.

This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of Yunkang Oral Solution on the improvement of spleen deficiency and pregnancy outcomes in pregnant mice with spleen deficiency syndrome induced by irregular diet and over consumption of cold and bitter foods. To simulate human irregular diet and over consumption of cold and bitter foods leading to spleen deficiency, the pregnant mice with spleen deficiency syndrome were prepared using an alternate-day fasting and high-fat diet combined with oral administration of Sennae Folium. During the experiment, spleen deficiency-related indicators and diarrhea-related parameters were measured. Gastric and intestinal motility(gastric emptying rate and intestinal propulsion rate) were evaluated. The levels of serum ghrelin, growth hormone(GH), gastrin(Gas), total cholesterol(TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-c), chorionic gonadotropin ß(ß-CG), progesterone(P), and estradiol(E_2) were measured. Intestinal barrier function in pregnant mice with spleen deficiency syndrome was assessed. Conception rate, ovarian coefficient, litter-bearing uterine coefficient, number of live fetuses, average fetal weight, and fetal length were calculated. The results showed that Yunkang Oral Solution significantly improved spleen deficiency-related indicators and diarrhea in pregnant mice with spleen deficiency syndrome, increased gastric emptying rate and intestinal propulsion rate, elevated the levels of gastrointestinal hormones(ghrelin, GH, and Gas) in the serum, and reduced lipid levels(TC and LDL-c), thereby improving lipid metabolism disorders. It also improved colonic tissue morphology, increased the number of goblet cells, and promoted the mRNA and protein expression of occludin and claudin-1 in colonic tissues, thereby alleviating intestinal barrier damage. Yunkang Oral Solution also regulated the levels of pregnancy hormones(ß-CG, P, and E_2) in the serum of pregnant mice with spleen deficiency syndrome. Moreover, it increased the conception rate, ovarian coefficient, litter-bearing uterine coefficient, number of live fetuses, average fetal weight, and fetal length. These findings suggest that Yunkang Oral Solution can improve spleen deficiency-related symptoms in pregnant mice before and during pregnancy, regulate pregnancy-related hormones, and improve pregnancy outcomes.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Aging is related to many factors, such as genes, oxidative damage, metabolic abnormalities, immune regulation and sex hormones. This article reviews the pharmacological mechanism of Epimedium on slow aging from six aspects: gene regulation, antioxidant, the regulation of metabolism, the modulation of the immune system, the regulation of sex hormone, and clinical efficacy.Aim of the studyThrough literature review, to discover the potential pharmacological mechanism of Epimedium for slow aging. Materials and methods: We reviewed the literature on the applications of Epimedium in multiple systems and the potential underlying mechanisms with systematic and comprehensive illustrations. The review includes the following aspects: gene regulation, antioxidant, the regulation of metabolism, the modulation of the immune system, the regulation of sex hormone, clinical efficacy and safety. Results: The slow aging active components of Epimedium may be flavonoids, such as Epimedins A, B, C and icariin The slow aging effect of Epimedium may be related to gene regulation, antioxidant, the regulation of metabolism, the modulation of the immune system, and the regulation of sex hormone. No severe adverse reaction has been reported. Conclusions: Epimedium has potential slow aging effect and been widely used in the clinic for aging-related diseases in the real world in China; however, large-scale studies are still needed.

BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) is given to assist in the treatment of MS, which is an effective therapeutic method. However, the therapy mechanism of EA related to stem cells in the treatment of MS is not yet known. In this study, we used a classic animal model of multiple sclerosis: experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) to evaluate the therapeutic effect of EA at Zusanli (ST36) acupoint in EAE and shed light on its potential roles in the effects of stem cells in vivo. METHODS: The EAE animal models were established. From the first day after immunization, EAE model mice received EA at ST36 acupoint, named the EA group. The weight and clinical score of the three groups were recorded for 28 days. The demyelination, inflammatory cell infiltration, and markers of neural stem cells (NSCs), hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were compared. RESULTS: We showed that EAE mice treated with EA at ST36 acupoint, were suppressed in demyelination and inflammatory cell infiltration, and thus decreased clinical score and weight loss and mitigated the development of EAE when compared with the EAE group. Moreover, our data revealed that the proportions of NSCs, HSCs, and MSCs increased in the EA group compared with the EAE group. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested that EA at ST36 acupoint was an effective nonpharmacological therapeutic protocol that not only reduced the CNS demyelination and inflammatory cell infiltration in EAE disease but also increased the proportions of various stem cells. Further study is necessary to better understand how EA at the ST36 acupoint affects EAE.

Although increasing evidence suggests potential iatrogenic injury from supplemental oxygen therapy, significant exposure to hyperoxia in critically ill patients is inevitable. This study shows that hyperoxia causes lung injury in a time- and dose-dependent manner. In addition, prolonged inspiration of oxygen at concentrations higher than 80% is found to cause redox imbalance and impair alveolar microvascular structure. Knockout of C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 1 (Cxcr1) inhibits the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from neutrophils and synergistically enhances the ability of endothelial cells to eliminate ROS. We also combine transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome analysis and find that CXCR1 knockdown promotes glutamine metabolism and leads to reduced glutathione by upregulating the expression of malic enzyme 1. This preclinical evidence suggests that a conservative oxygen strategy should be recommended and indicates that targeting CXCR1 has the potential to restore redox homeostasis by reducing oxygen toxicity when inspiratory hyperoxia treatment is necessary.

Dissimilatory sulfate reduction (DSR) is the key sulfur cycle that transforms sulfate to sulfide. This process leads to odour issues in wastewater treatment. However, few studies have focused on DSR during treating food processing wastewater with high sulfate. This study investigated DSR microbial population and functional genes in an anaerobic biofilm reactor (ABR) treating tofu processing wastewater. The tofu processing wastewater is a common food processing wastewater in Asia. The full-scale ABR was operated for over 120 days in a tofu and tofu-related products manufacturing factory. Mass balance calculations based on the reactor performance indicated that 79.6-85.1 % of the sulfate was transformed into sulfide irrelevant to dissolved oxygen supplementation. Metagenomic analysis revealed 21 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) containing enzymes encoding DSR. The biofilm contained the complete functional genes of DSR pathway in the full-scale ABR, indicating that biofilm could process DSR independently. Comamonadaceae, Thiobacillus, Nitrosomonadales, Desulfatirhabdium butyrativorans, Desulfomonile tiedjei were the dominant DSR species in the ABR biofilm community. Dissolved oxygen supplementation directly inhibited DSR and mitigated HS- production. It was also found that Thiobacillus contained all the function genes encoding every necessary enzyme in DSR, and thus Thiobacillus distribution directly correlated to DSR and the ABR performance.

A photoacoustic imaging (Au@PDA-WL NPs) probe was successfully prepared for monitoring the early degeneration of articular cartilage. WYRGRL immobilized on the surface of Au@PDA NPs could target the collagen II peptide, which is expressed on chondrocytes in vivo and in vitro, and the enrichment of this nano-probe on cartilage tissue further resulted in the localized plasmon resonance coupling effect, inducing an enhancement in photothermal conversion capacity after the formation of aggregates. Besides, the catechol structure in the PDA shell could eliminate ROS to effectively delay the development of osteoarthrosis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The roots of Achyranthes bidentata Blume are one of the regularly used herbal drugs in Chinese medicine, and has been applied for strengthening the muscle and bone for a long time. However, its effect on muscle remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This paper aims to explore the anti-muscle atrophy effect of A. bidentata, and to clarify the possible signaling pathways involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The saponin extract of the roots of A. bidentata (ABSE) was prepared and analyzed, and its activity on myoblast differentiation was assayed with C2C12 cell culture. ABSE was then orally administered at dosage of 35, 70 and 140 mg/kg/day to disuse-induced muscle atrophy mice. The studies on mice body weight and muscle quality were conducted, and Western blot was used for exploring the possible signaling pathways involved in the muscle protective action aided with transcriptome analysis. RESULTS: The total saponin content of ABSE was 59.1%. ABSE promoted the C2C12 cells differentiation to myotube in C2C12 differentiation assay. Further study with disuse-induced muscle atrophy mice model demonstrated that ABSE significantly increased muscle fiber diameter as well as the proportion of slow muscle fibers. Possible mechanism study aided with transcriptome analysis revealed that ABSE alleviated muscle atrophy at least through activation of PI3K/Akt pathway in vivo & vitro. CONCLUSIONS: The saponin extract of the root of A. bidentata (ABSE) has a protective effect on muscle atrophy, and showed a considerable potential in prevention and treatment of muscle atrophy.

Excessive or insufficient supplementation of trace elements (TEs) limits the progression of anaerobic digestion. The main reason for this is the lack of sufficient understanding of digestion substrate characteristics, which significantly affects the demand for TEs. In this review, the relationship between TEs requirements and substrate characteristics is discussed. We mainly focus on three aspects. 1) The basis for TE optimization and existing problems: The optimization of TEs often based on the total solids (TS) or volatile solids (VS) of substrates, does not fully consider substrate characteristics. 2) TE deficiency mechanisms for different types of substrates: nitrogen-rich, sulfur-rich, TE-poor, and easily hydrolyzed substrates are the four main types of substrates. The mechanisms underlying TEs deficiency in the different substrates are investigated. 3) Regulation of TE bioavailability: characteristics of substrates affect digestion parameters, which disturb the bioavailability TE. Therefore, methods for regulating bioavailability of TEs are discussed.

Background: Digoxin is one of the most widely and commonly used cardiac drug, which plays an irreplaceable role in treating heart failure and arrhythmia. The 2010 Edition of Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China stipulates that the effective range of digoxin plasma concentration is 0.5-2.0 ng/mL and it is toxic at plasma concentration >2 ng/mL. Its effective plasma drug concentration is close to the toxic concentration, and large individual differences in the effects of the drug have been observed. It is often used in combination with other drugs, but drug interactions have a great impact on the plasma concentration of digoxin and lead to adverse reactions (ADRs), such as poisoning. Most of the reported drug interactions are with Western drugs. However, there are many combinations of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western drugs, TCM interacting with digoxin comprises monomer components, single medicines, and Chinese patent medicines. Aim of the study: We aimed i) to provide an overview of the TCM formulations affecting the pharmacology of digoxin and their mechanisms of action and ii) to provide a theoretical reference for the safe and rational use of digoxin in combination with TCM in clinical practice and to avoid ADRs. Methods: A literature search of electronic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and WANFANG Data, was performed to search for articles published between 1 January 1960, and 1 August 2022. Search terms used included "digoxin," "traditional Chinese medicine," "Chinese patent medicine," and "adverse reactions" and their combinations. Results: A total of 49 articles were obtained, including clinical reports, pharmacological experiments and in vitro experiments. The mechanisms of action affecting the pharmacology of digoxin are complex. TCM formulations may affect the pharmacology of digoxin in vivo by influencing gastrointestinal motility or gastric juice pH, regulating P-glycoprotein levels, exerting cumulative pharmacological effects, and enhancing the sensitivity of the heart to digoxin. Although studies have shown that some TCM formulations interact with digoxin, they may be influenced by the complexity of the composition and the pharmacological effects of the TCM, the sensitivity of digoxin concentration determination methods, etc. The results of existing studies are controversial and further in-depth studies are required. Conclusion: Combinations of digoxin and TCM formulations are commonly used. This article serves as a reference to understand the interactions between TCM formulations and digoxin to avoid the occurrence of ADRs and improve the efficacy and safety of digoxin.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Gliomas are common malignant intracranial tumors that have worse prognosis and pose a serious threat to human health. The Kangliu pill (KLP) is an innovative herbal compound from Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University that has been clinically used for the treatment of gliomas for more than 40 years, and is one of the few drugs for primary treatment of this disorder. But the fundamental molecular mechanisms and pathways of KLP are not clear. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the therapeutic mechanism of KLP in the treatment of gliomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An in situ xenograft model of red fluorescent protein-labeled human glioma cell line (U87-RFP) in BALB/c-nu mouse was established, and the therapeutic effect of KLP on gliomas was assessed by tumor weights and fluorescence areas. A quantitative proteomics approach using tandem mass tags combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was performed to explore differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in glioma tissues, and bioinformatics analyses including Gene Ontology analysis, pathway analysis, and network analysis were performed to analyze the proteins involved in the network therapeutic mechanisms responsible for key metabolic pathways. Cytological experiments corroborated the above analysis results. RESULTS: Network pharmacology approach screened 246 bioactive compounds contained in KLP, targeting 724 proteins and 173 potential targets of KLP for glioma treatment. The important targets obtained after visualizing the PPI network were AKT1, INS, GAPDH, SRC, TP53, etc. The KEGG enrichment results showed that 9 proteins were related to cancer, including Pathways in cancer, PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, etc. KLP had antitumor activity in gliomas, which reduced tumor weights and fluorescence areas. A number of DEPs possibly associated with gliomas were identified through quantitative proteomic techniques. Among these DEPs, 50 (25 upregulated and 25 downregulated) were identified that might be associated with KLP action. Bioinformatics showed that these 50 DEPs were mainly focused on focal adhesion, extracellular matrix (ECM)-receptor interactions, and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. Cytological experiments revealed that KLP significantly inhibited the proliferation and promoted apoptosis of U87-MG human glioma cells, and its mechanism was through the inhibition of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: Therapeutic effect of KLP was regulation of multiple pathways in the treatment of gliomas. In specific, it interacts through the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. This work may contribute proteomic insights for further research on the medical treatment of glioma using KLP.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Depression is a major mental disorder and it is currently recognized as the second-leading cause of disability worldwide. However, the therapeutic effect of antidepressants remains unsatisfactory. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely used for centuries, including commonly-used complementary and alternative medical therapies for depression. Recent clinical trials have been carried out to assess the efficacy and safety of TCM, and to explore the mechanisms of action in relation to the treatment of depression. AIM OF THE STUDY: To summarize frequently used TCM decoctions and Chinese patent medicines (CPM) for treating depression, review their clinical therapeutic effects in treating depressive disorders, consider their possible mechanisms, and characterize the relationships between their efficacy and mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a computerized literature search using the electronic databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases, with the keywords "depression", "traditional Chinese medicine decoction", "Chinese patent medicine", "application", "mechanism", and their combinations, from January 1, 2000 to August 8, 2022 (inclusive). RESULTS: A total of 51 papers were identified. We reviewed studies on six each TCM decoctions and CPMs, which demonstrated their significant clinical efficacy for treating depression and examined their mechanisms of action. The anti-depressive effects were related to: 1) increased monoamine neurotransmitter levels, 2) inhibiting hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, 3) regulating hippocampal neurons and neurotrophic factors, 4) regulating immune cytokines, 5) counteracting excitatory amino acid toxicity, and 6) regulating microbe-gut-brain axis function. CONCLUSION: TCM plays an increasingly important role in the management of depression by enhancing the therapeutic effects and alleviating the side effects of antidepressant chemicals.

BACKGROUND: Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is widely used to treat myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). Damp-clearing and pain-reducing paste (DPP) comprises medical herbs and has been a traditional method of reducing myofascial pain in China for a long time, and it is usually administered with heating. However, the synergistic effect of PEMF therapy on heating-DPP in patients with MPS is unclear. AIM: To investigate the synergistic effect of PEMF therapy plus heating-DPP in lumbar MPS. METHODS: This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted on 120 patients with lumbar MPS who were randomly divided into an experimental group (EG, n = 60) and a control group (CG, n = 60). Patients in both groups were treated with heating-DPP combined with PEMF therapy; however, the electromagnetic function of the therapeutic apparatus used in the CG was disabled. Each treatment lasted for 20 min and was applied five times a week for two weeks. The short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire was applied at five time points: pretest, end of the first and second weeks of treatment, and end of the first and fourth week after completing treatment. Visual analog scale (VAS), present pain intensity index (PPI), and pain rating index (PRI; total, affective pain, and sensory pain scores) scores were then analyzed. RESULTS: Compared with the CG, the VAS, PPI and PRI scores (total, affective pain and sensory pain scores) in the EG were significantly lower after treatment and during follow-up. CONCLUSION: PEMF therapy combined with heating-DPP showed better efficacy than heating-DPP alone in reducing the overall intensity of pain and sensory and affective pain.

Preventing tumor recurrence is the most important target for cancer treatment. However, the current effective and advanced technology relies on the use of near-infrared region (NIR), and the equipment of NIR-I and NIR-II fluorescence imaging technique-based fluorescent-guided surgery is expensive and complicated to operate. Here, we report a safe and effective strategy of an organic-inorganic hybrid gold nanoparticle-based novel smart probe (Au@PDA-ss-PEGm NPs) which is appropriate for photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT) of tumors in vivo. After intravenous injection, the probe would be transported to the tumor to penetrate the cellular membrane. Then the disulfide bond on the probe surface would be broken with the help of a high concentration of glutathione in the tumor cell. The remaining Au@PDA NPs would aggregate to form plasmonic nanoclusters and exhibit a notable plasmon coupling enhanced photothermal (PCEPT) effect. Besides, the results further proved its good biosafety and pharmacokinetic characteristics in vivo and, more important, a short time exposure under 808 nm laser after surgical removal of the tumor, which would be effective to prevent tumor recurrence and bring dawn to the high-efficiency treatment of tumors.

Background: Warfarin is a commonly used oral anticoagulant. It has a narrow therapeutic window and wide variation in individualized dosing, and is used clinically for the treatment of thromboembolic diseases. Due to the widespread use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in China and the complex composition and diverse mechanisms of action of TCM, the combination of TCM and warfarin in patients has led to fluctuations in the international normalized ratio of warfarin or bleeding. To ensure rational clinical use, we summarize the TCMs with which warfarin interacts and the possible mechanisms, with a view to providing a clinical reference. Aim of the study: To summarize the mechanisms by which Chinese herbal medicines affect the enhancement or weakening of the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, to provide theoretical references for clinicians and pharmacists to use warfarin safely and rationally, and to avoid the adverse effects associated with the combination of Chinese herbal medicines and warfarin. Methods: A computerized literature search of electronic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science (WOS), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and WANFANG Data was performed. Key words used in the literature search were "warfarin", "Chinese medicine", "traditional Chinese medicine", "Chinese patent medicine" etc. and their combinations in a time limit from January 1, 1990 to May 1, 2021. A total of 64 articles were obtained following the selection process, including clinical reports, pharmacological experiments and in vitro experiments which were reviewed to determine the mechanism of the anticoagulant effect of herbal medicine on warfarin. Results: The mechanisms affecting the anticoagulant effect of warfarin are complex, and herbal medicines may enhance and diminish the anticoagulant effect of warfarin through a variety of mechanisms; thus, clinical use needs to be cautious. Some herbal medicines have shown inconsistent results in both in vivo and ex vivo experiments, pharmacology and clinical studies, and should be the focus of future research. Conclusion: With the widespread use of TCM, the combination of warfarin and TCM is more common. This article will promote clinicians' knowledge and understanding of the TCMs which interact with warfarin, in order to avoid the occurrence of adverse clinical treatment processes, and improve the efficacy and safety.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma is the most common type of brain tumor and is invariably fatal, with a mean survival time of 8-15 mo for recently diagnosed tumors, and a 5-year survival rate of only 7.2%. The standard treatment for newly diagnosed glioblastoma includes surgery followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy and further adjuvant temozolomide. However, the prognosis remains poor and long-term survival is rare. This report aimed to demonstrate a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of glioblastoma. CASE SUMMARY: A patient was referred to the Department of Neurosurgery with an intracranial space-occupying lesion with a maximum diameter of approximately 5 cm. The tumor was compressing functional areas, and the patient accordingly underwent partial resection and concurrent chemoradiotherapy. The imaging and pathological findings were consistent with a diagnosis of glioblastoma with oligodendroglioma differentiation (World Health Organization IV). The patient was finally diagnosed with glioblastoma. However, the patient discontinued treatment due to intolerable side effects, and was prescribed Kangliu pill (KLP) 7.5 g three times/d, which he has continued to date. Significant shrinkage of the tumor (maximum diameter reduced from about 3.5 to about 2 cm) was found after 3 mo of KLP therapy, and the tumor was further reduced to about 1 cm after 3 years. The patient's symptoms of headache, limb weakness, and left hemiplegia were relieved, with no side effects. CONCLUSION: KLP has been a successful intervention for glioblastoma, and the current case indicates that traditional Chinese medicine may offer effective alternative therapies for glioblastoma.

Given that the biomechanical theory cannot well explain the therapeutic effect of fan-ashi point (a special site that may relieve pain by pressing), the skeletal muscle tension is adopted and it is attempted to interpret the mechanism of the curative effect and the effect onset of fan-ashi point. It is viewed that the longitudinal tension conduction and transverse tension conduction pathways of skeletal muscle are the material basis of the effect onset of fan-ashi point. Hence, acupuncture at fan-ashi point may alter the longitudinal or transverse tension conduction of skeletal muscle to relieve muscle and tendon pain.

Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammation are two key pathogeneses of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), which leads to outer hair cell (OHC) damage and hearing loss. In this work, we successfully developed ROS-responsive nanoparticles as berberine (BBR) carriers (PL-PPS/BBR) for OHC-targeted therapy of NIHL: Prestin-targeting peptide 2 (PrTP2)-modified nanoparticles (PL-PPS/BBR), which effectively accumulated in OHC areas, and poly(propylene sulfide)120 (PPS120), which scavenged ROS and converted to poly(propylene sulfoxide)120 in a ROS environment to disintegrate and provoke the rapid release of BBR with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In this study, satisfactory anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of PL-PPS/BBR were confirmed. Immunofluorescence and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that PL-PPS/BBR effectively accumulated in OHCs and protected the morphological integrity of OHCs. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) results demonstrated that PL-PPS/BBR significantly improved hearing in NIHL guinea pigs after noise exposure. This work suggested that PL-PPS/BBR may be a new potential treatment for noise-associated injury with clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging and rapidly evolving disease, with no recommended effective anti-coronavirus drug treatment. Traditional Chinese Patent Medicines (CPMs) have, however, been widely used to treat COVID-19 in China, and a number of clinical practice results have shown them to have a significant role in its treatment. Consequently, numerous guidelines and expert consensus have recommended the use of CPMs to treat COVID-19. AIM OF THE STUDY: The objectives of this review are to provide up-to-date information on the pharmacology and clinical research on CPMs in the treatment of COVID-19, discuss the research findings, and to better guide clinical application and scientific research on CPMs in the treatment of COVID-19. METHODS: The frequencies of CPM recommendations by guidelines and expert consensus for treatment of COVID-19 in China were ranked. This report identifies the top 10 CPMs, which include Huoxiang Zhengqi capsule (HXZQC), Lianhua Qingwen capsule (LHQWC), Jinhua Qinggan granule (JHQGG), Shufeng Jiedu capsule (SFJDC), Tanreqing injection (TRQI), Xiyanping injection (XYPI), Xuebijing injection (XBJI), Shenfu injection (SFI), Shengmai injection (SMI), and Angong Niuhuang pill (AGNHP). Relevant studies from 2000 to 2020 on these top 10 CPMs, covering usage, dosage, mechanism, curative effect, and precautions, were collected from pharmacopoeia, reports, and theses via library and digital databases (including PubMed, CNKI, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Elsevier). RESULTS: The properties of the top 10 CPMs included antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic, anti-acute lung injury, anti-shock, immune regulation, and enhancement of pulmonary function. In addition, clinical research results and Chinese treatment data showed that the CPMs had good therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of COVID-19, and adverse reactions were minimal. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of the characteristics of the top 10 CPMs and precautions that should be taken may help clinicians to rationally improve therapeutic efficacy, and promote the role of Chinese Medicine in the control of the COVID-19 global epidemic.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic intestinal disease, which was commonly found in westerners whereas is increasingly prevalent in Asia because of the changing eating habits. In previous research, we found that a water-soluble polysaccharide isolated from Auricularia auricular-judae (Bull.)-a kind of edible mushroom (Aap)-is composed of ß-1,3 glycosidic bonds, which is regarded as therapeutic or protective substance in enteritis. We therefore aimed to find the preventing effect of Aap on IBD. Here, we reported that pre-administration of Aap not only ameliorated weight loss, colon damage, and mucosal inflammation in colitis mice, but also prevented the damage of intestinal barrier by reducing the D-lactic acid and diamine oxidase level in plasma. Through high-throughput sequencing, we found that Aap changed gut microbiota composition. Furthermore, the preventing effect was transmissible via horizontal feces transfer from Aap-treated mice to normal mice. Our results indicated that oral administration of Aap is a promising protective substance of IBD. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Our study proved that Auricularia auricula polysaccharide had substantial preventing effect on DSS-induced colitis in mice. This research might lay the theoretical foundation and technical support for the development of related functional foods. People could also enhance their gut immunity by eating Auricularia auricular in their daily life. Auricularia auricular as a highly nutritious agricultural product showed the broad significance in nutrition and food function.
