Different nutraceuticals are often considered by parents of infants and children with abdominal pain and disorders of the gut-brain interaction. Herb extracts and natural compounds have long been used in traditional medicine, but clinical pediatric trials are very limited. This narrative review based on relevant studies identified through a search of the literature in Pubmed and Medline updated to October 2023 focused on the effect of nutraceuticals in infantile colic, functional abdominal pain, and irritable bowel syndrome in children and adolescents. Significant reductions in colic episodes and crying time were reported in two studies on fennel (seeds oil or tea), in three studies on different multiple herbal extracts (all including fennel), in one study on Mentha piperita, and in at least two double-blind randomized controlled studies on Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 and Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12 (108 CFU/day for at least 21 days) in breast-fed infants. Compared to a placebo, in children with functional abdominal pain or irritable bowel syndrome, a significant reduction in pain was reported in two studies supplementing peppermint oil capsules or psyllium fibers, and in one study on corn fiber cookies, partial hydrolyzed guar gum, a specific multiple herbal extract (STW-5), or vitamin D supplementation. To date, there is moderate-certainty evidence with a weak grade of recommendation on Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 (108 CFU/day) in reducing pain intensity in children with functional abdominal pain and for Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (1-3 × 109 CFU twice daily) in reducing pain frequency and intensity in children with IBS. Further large and well-designed pediatric studies are needed to prove the efficacy and safety of different herbal extracts and prolonged use of studied products in infants and children with pain disorders of the gut-brain interaction.

Background: The integration of acupuncture with intramuscular injection of diclofenac sodium can expedite the onset of analgesia in treating acute renal colic caused by urolithiasis. However, it remains unclear whether acupuncture can accelerate pain relief constantly until complete remission. This study aimed to explore the extent to which acupuncture can expedite the onset time of response or complete pain relief in treating acute renal colic, and the predictive value of patient characteristics for treatment efficacy. Methods: This secondary analysis utilized data from a prior randomized controlled trial. Eighty patients with acute renal colic were randomly assigned 1:1 to the acupuncture group or the sham acupuncture group. After intramuscular injection of diclofenac sodium, acupuncture or sham acupuncture was delivered to patients. The outcomes included time to response (at least a 50 % reduction in pain) and complete pain relief. Between-group comparison under the 2 events was estimated by Kaplan-Meier methodology. Subgroup analysis was performed utilizing the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: The median response time and complete pain relief time in the acupuncture group were lower than those in the sham acupuncture group (5 vs 30 min, Log Rank P < 0.001; 20 min vs not observed, Log Rank P < 0.001, respectively). Hazard Ratios (HRs) for response across all subgroups favored the acupuncture group. All HRs for complete pain relief favored acupuncture, expect large stone and moderate pain at baseline. No interaction was found in either event. Conclusion: Acupuncture can accelerate the response time and complete pain relief time for patients with acute renal colic, with the efficacy universally. OBJECTIVE: There is a growing consensus that the risks of current pharmacologic analgesics warrant consideration of alternative modalities for acute and chronic pain control. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in adult emergency department (ED) patients presenting with abdominal pain. METHODS: We conducted a patient and observer blinded randomized controlled trial comparing TENS to sham TENS. The study was conducted at a large suburban academic ED. Patients with abdominal pain and a verbal numeric pain scale (VNS) of 5 or greater were randomized to TENS or sham TENS applied via 4 skin pads, one in each abdominal quadrant for 30 min. The primary outcome was change in pain scores 30 min after the intervention. Our study had 80% power to detect a between group difference of 1.5 points on the VNS. RESULTS: 81 patients were randomized to TENS (n = 41) or sham TENS (n = 40). Groups were similar in baseline characteristics. The mean (SD) reductions in pain scores were 1.9 (2.1) and 1.7 (2.6) in patients treated with TENS and sham TENS respectively (P = 0.81). Use of rescue medications in patients with treated with TENS and sham TENS was similar (49 vs 55% respectively, P = 0.66). CONCLUSIONS: Application of TENS to the abdominal wall did not result in more effective pain relief than sham TENS in adult ED patients with abdominal pain.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Infantile colic has a multifactorial etiology. Recent studies have suggested that probiotics may be effective in its management. OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the Actiregularis strain (5×106 cfu/ml) included in maternal nutrition on gastrointestinal problems, growth development, and breastfeeding outcomes in infantile colic. DESIGN AND SETTING: The study was a randomized controlled trial conducted in the neonatal outpatient clinic of a training and research hospital in Turkey. METHODS: A probiotic drink containing the Actiregularis (5×106 cfu/ml) strain was added to the diet of mothers in the probiotics group once daily for 15 consecutive days. Data were collected for each infant's 0th (birth), 1st, 4th, and 6th months. RESULTS: Infants whose mothers were administered Actiregularis for 15 days had decreased crying intensity (P = 0.000). When the difference in breastfeeding rates between the groups was significant at the 4th and 6th months (P = 0.044; P = 0.035). There was no difference in anthropometric values except the babies' weights at the 6th month. (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Infants treated with Actiregularis, which was added to their mothers' diet for 15 days, showed a decrease in the frequency of crying, and the difference in breastfeeding rates between the groups was significant at the 4th and 6th months. BACKGROUND: Infant colic is a multifactorial syndrome for which various therapeutic strategies have been proposed. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of osteopathic manual therapy in treating symptoms related to infant colic. METHOD: A prospective, randomised, blinded clinical trial was conducted of patients diagnosed with infant colic. The treatment group were given osteopathic manual therapy, and their parents received two sessions of counselling. The control group received no such therapy, but their parents attended the same counselling sessions. The non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was applied to determine whether there were significant differences between the groups for the numerical variables considered. For the qualitative variables, Fisher's exact test was used. The threshold assumed for statistical significance was 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 42 babies were assigned to each group. Those in the experimental group presented less severe infant colic with a trend towards statistical significance after the first session (p = 0.09). In sucking, excretion, eructation and gas there were no significant differences between the groups. Crying was a statistically significant dimension both after the first intervention (p = 0.03) and two weeks after (p = 0.04). Regurgitation values were significantly lower in the experimental group during the three weeks of follow-up (p = 0.05). Values for sleep were lower in the experimental group, but the differences were not statistically significant. In both groups, colic severity decreased over time, with no side effects. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with osteopathic manual therapy alleviates the symptoms of infant colic and could be recommended for this purpose from the onset of the condition.

BACKGROUND: Omega-3 fatty acid and alpha-tocopherol supplementation reduces gastric ulcer formation in humans and rodents; however, efficacy of prevention in horses is unknown. Equine Omega Complete (EOC) is an oral supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids and alpha-tocopherol. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVE: Determine if EOC supplementation prevents gastric ulcers and increases serum alpha-tocopherol concentrations in healthy horses. ANIMALS: Nine thoroughbred geldings; 5-13 years old. METHODS: Prospective randomized block design, repeated in crossover model. Horses were administered EOC, omeprazole, or water PO for 28 days. Horses underwent an established gastric ulcer induction protocol from days 21-28 via intermittent feed deprivation. Gastroscopies were performed on days 0, 21, and 28. Serum alpha-tocopherol concentrations were measured on days 0 and 28. The effects of treatment and time on ulcer grades were assessed with ordinal logistic regression, with significance at P-value <.05. RESULTS: Ulcer grades increased during ulcer induction in control and EOC but not omeprazole groups (P = .02). Grades increased in EOC-treated horses after ulcer induction from a median of 1 [95% confidence interval 0-2.5] (day 0) to 2.5 [1.5-3.5] (day 28) and were similar to the control group (P = .54). Serum alpha-tocopherol increased in EOC-treated horses from day 0 to day 28 (mean 2.2 ± 0.43 µg/mL to 2.96 ± 0.89 µg/mL; P < .001) with high individual variation; this increase was not different from omeprazole or control groups. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Supplementation with EOC for 28 days did not prevent gastric ulcer formation nor increase alpha-tocopherol concentrations relative to the control group.

BACKGROUND: Urological calculi often cause renal colic, which is characterized by paroxysmal or persistent severe pain in the upper abdomen or lumbar region. Development of methods to quickly relieve these pain symptoms has garnered clinical attention. Wrist-ankle acupuncture is a type of floating acupuncture therapy administered at selected points in the carpal and ankle areas, and it has good pain-relieving effects. We used wrist-ankle acupuncture combined with pain nursing for pain intervention in patients with renal calculi to confirm its application and safety. AIM: To study the effect of wrist-ankle acupuncture combined with pain nursing in the treatment of urinary calculi with acute pain. METHODS: Eighty-two patients with urinary calculi with acute pain as the first symptom followed at our hospital from November 2019 to June 2021 were enrolled in the study and classified into two groups according to the odd and even numbers of the visit sequences, each with 41 cases. The control group received a routine nursing intervention and intramuscular injection of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, whereas the observation group received pain management nursing and wrist-ankle acupuncture. Subsequently, the pain-relieving effect was compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The score on the visual analog scale (VAS) at 24, 48, and 72 h postintervention was decreased in both groups compared with the baseline data; moreover, the observation group scored significantly lower than the control group on the VAS at each time point after the intervention (P < 0.05). The clinical efficacy at 24 h postintervention was not significantly different between the two groups (P > 0.05). In turn, the pain recurrence rate at 72 h postintervention was lower in the observation group compared with the control group (P < 0.05). Finally, the nursing satisfaction rate in the observation group was significantly higher than that observed in the control group (P < 0.05). No serious adverse reactions occurred during the treatment and the safety of treatment was high in both groups. CONCLUSION: Wrist-ankle acupuncture combined with pain nursing for treating urolithiasis with acute pain effectively alleviated the degree of pain and reduced the recurrence rate, which was worthy of clinical application.

Chinese star anise is an anise-scented star-shaped fruit of the evergreen Illicium verum tree. It is generally used as a spice and folk medicine for treating digestive illness. Chinese star anise may be adulterated with Japanese star anise (fruit of Illicium anisatum tree with similar morphology to the former), containing high content of toxic anisatin leading to severe physical disorders. In this work, a UHPLC-MS/MS method has been developed to determine three quality markers (quercetin, kaempferol, and luteolin) and toxicity marker (anisatin) of star anise using quercetin-d3, an exogenous heavy isotopic compound, as internal standard. Chromatographic separation of quality and toxicity marker compounds was achieved using a T3 column within two minutes. The method was successfully developed, validated, and used to quantify the multiple marker compounds in both botanical reference materials and star anise samples. This method can be used for quality control and assessment of Chinese star anise products.

BACKGROUND: Biliary colic (BC) is a frequent hepatobiliary disorder encountered in emergency departments. Acupuncture may be effective as an alternative and complementary medicine for BC. Nonetheless, rigorous trials investigating its efficacy are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study protocol is to determine whether acupuncture provides immediate relief of pain and associated symptoms in BC patients. METHOD: Eighty-six participants who aged from 18 to 60 years with BC will be recruited in the First People's Hospital of Longquanyi District, Chengdu (West China Longquan Hospital Sichuan University). All participants will be allocated into two treatment groups including acupuncture group and sham acupuncture group using a 1:1 ratio. Each group will only receive a single 30-min needle treatment while waiting for their test results after completing the routine examination for BC. The primary outcome of the study is to assess the change in pain intensity after the 30-min acupuncture treatment. The secondary outcomes of the study include the change in pain intensity at various time points, the degree of gastrointestinal symptoms at different time points, the level of anxiety experienced during pain episodes at different time points, the score of Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale-20 (PASS-20), the score of Fear of Pain Questionnaire-III (FPQ-III), and the score of Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), among others. DISCUSSION: The results of this research will provide substantial evidence regarding the efficacy of acupuncture in alleviating symptoms associated with BC. AIM: Osteopathy and chiropractic techniques are used for babies for different reasons, but it is unclear how effective they are. The aim of this study was to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing crying time and increasing sleeping time in babies with infantile colic. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted on infantile colic studies that used complementary and alternative medicine techniques as interventions. The outcome measures were hours spent crying and/or sleeping. We used the PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Osteopathic Medicine Digital Database and Google Scholar databases from inception to 11 November 2022. RESULTS: The methodological quality of the randomised control trials ranged from fair to high. We focused on five studies with 422 babies. Complementary treatments failed to decrease the crying time (mean difference -1.08, 95% CI: -2.17 to 0.01, I2 = 92%) and to increase sleeping time (mean difference 1.11, 95% CI: -0.20 to 2.41; I2 : 91%), compared with no intervention. The quality of the evidence was rated as very low for both outcome measures. CONCLUSION: Osteopathy and chiropractic treatment failed to reduce the crying time and increase sleeping time in babies with infantile colic, compared with no additional intervention.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage) at points on abdomen and back meridians in the treatment of infantile colic.Methods: A total of 120 infants with intestinal colic were randomly divided into a control group and an observation group, with 60 cases in each group. In the control group, the parents of the infants were given soothing and health education. In addition to the intervention used in the control group, the observation group was treated with Tuina at points on abdomen and back meridians once a day for 5 consecutive days as a course of treatment. The pain scale score and clinical symptoms of the two groups were recorded before and after treatment. Results: After treatment, the total effective rate of the observation group was higher than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The pain scale score of the observation group was lower than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). In the 24 h behavior diary indicators, the daily attack duration, the daily attack times, and the weekly attack days in the observation group were lower than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Tuina at points on abdomen and back meridians is effective and safe in the treatment of infantile colic.

Objectives: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess and compare the effectiveness of manual therapy in alleviating infant crying, a common symptom of nocturnal crying (NC) and infantile colic (IC). Methods: Total effective rate, crying time and adverse events were used as outcome indicators. To assess the quality, the risk of bias was determined for each study by two authors, using the Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool. RevMan 5.0 was used for data analysis. A total of 98 articles were identified from 6 electronic databases. Results: Among them, twenty-seven studies which included 13 NC and 14 IC were included. Meta-analysis showed favorable effects tuina therapy on total effective rate (TER) of NC (RR 1.20 [95% CI 1.05 to 1.37], p = 0.007), chiropractic therapy on crying time change of IC (SMD -0.83 [95% CI -1.61 to -0.06], p = 0.04) and massage on total crying time of IC (SMD -0.86 [95% CI -1.09 to -0.63], p < 0.00001). This systematic review compares different manual therapies for the treatment of NC and IC. While tuina, chiropractic, and massage show results in alleviating symptoms, the overall evidence remains limited due to the low quality and heterogeneity of the included studies. Conclusion: Therefore, further high-quality research with unified control groups is needed to establish manual therapy as a recommended treatment option for NC and IC. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the short-term and long-term efficacy of magnetotherapy and pediatric massage in the treatment of infantile colic. METHODS: A total of 120 neonates with sudden onset crying, bloating, and breast refusal who met the diagnostic criteria for colic were retrospectively enrolled from September 2019 to September 2021. They were divided into a combination group, a magnetotherapy group, a pediatric massage group, and a control group based on different treatment methods (n=30 in each group). All cases were provided with conventional nursing. RESULTS: The short-term efficacy of the combination group was significantly better than that of the control group. The difference was not statistically significant among combination, magnetotherapy, and pediatric massage groups (P>0.05). In the long-term efficacy assessment, the total effective rate was 96.67% in the combination group, 93.33% in the magnetotherapy group, 86.67% in the pediatric massage group, and 93.33% in the control group. There was no significant difference among the groups (P>0.05). Neonates in the combination group had the shortest crying relief time and the longest sleep duration after relief. This was followed by the magnetotherapy and the pediatric massage groups (P<0.05). Neonates in the control group had longer crying relief time and shorter sleep duration after relief than those in the combination group (P<0.05). From day 2 to day 7 of intervention, the pain level of the combination group was decreased significantly. This was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Magnetotherapy combined with pediatric massage can improve neonatal colic, relieve crying and pain symptoms, and improve sleep quality.

Background and aim: The prevalence of infant functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) varies across different areas but is largely unknown in southern Fujian. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of infant FGIDs in southern Fujian according to Rome IV diagnostic criteria. Methods: A cross-sectional prospective questionnaire-based survey was conducted among healthy infants between 0 and 3 months of age in southern Fujian. A total of 1,006 infants who received a physical examination from October 2017 to October 2018 were recruited in this study. Parents or caregivers provided demographic information and completed the questionnaire on gastrointestinal symptoms for infants. Infants with FGIDs were diagnosed using the Rome IV criteria. Results: Based on the Rome IV criteria, the prevalence of having a FGID in infants is 58.3% (586/1,006). The most common FGIDs in infants were regurgitation (45.7%, 460/1,006), followed by difficult defecation (3.6%, 36/1,006), functional constipation (3.2%, 32/1,006), and colic (2.4%, 24/1,006). No infants fulfilled diagnostic criteria for rumination syndrome and cyclic vomiting syndrome. Among the infants with FGIDs, 457 cases (78.0%, 457/586) were found with single FGID. Combined FGIDs were diagnosed in 129 (22.0%, 129/586) infants; of whom, 21.2% (124/586) had double disorders and 0.9% (5/586) had triple disorders. The most common combined FGIDs were regurgitation and difficult defecation (12.8%), followed by regurgitation and colic (2.4%). Risk factor analysis revealed that younger paternal age (B = 0.424, P = 0.004), paternal history of FGIDs (B = 0.821, P = 0.000), maternal history of FGIDs (B = 0.427, P = 0.012), and probiotics received in infant (B = 0.324, P = 0.032) were associated with an increased risk of infant FGIDs, whereas vitamin D supplementation after birth (B = -0.690, P = 0.000) can reduce the risk of developing FGIDs. Conclusion: FGIDs are common in infants living in southern Fujian according to Rome IV diagnostic criteria. The most common FGIDs in infants were regurgitation, difficult defecation, and functional constipation. Factors including younger paternal age, parental history of FGIDs, and the probiotic supplementation in infant showed a significant association with infant FGIDs. Whereas, vitamin D supplementation in infant was found to be a protective factor against FGIDs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the number of craniosacral therapy sessions that can be helpful to obtain a resolution of the symptoms of infantile colic and to observe if there are any differences in the evolution obtained by the groups that received a different number of Craniosacral Therapy sessions at 24 days of treatment, compared with the control group which did not received any treatment. METHODS: Fifty-eight infants with colic were randomized into two groups of which 29 babies in the control group received no treatment and those in the experimental group received 1-3 sessions of craniosacral therapy (CST) until symptoms were resolved. Evaluations were performed until day 24 of the study. In this study crying hours served as primary outcome. The secondary outcome were the hours of sleep and the severity, measured by an Infantile Colic Severity Questionnaire (ICSQ). RESULTS: Significant statistical differences were observed in favor of experimental group compared to the control group on day 24 in crying hours (mean difference = 2.94, at 95 %CI = 2.30-3.58; p < 0.001) primary outcome, and also in hours of sleep (mean difference = 2.80; at 95 %CI = - 3.85 to - 1.73; p < 0.001) and colic severity (mean difference = 17.24; at 95 %CI = 14.42-20.05; p < 0.001) secondary outcomes. Also, the differences between the groups ≤ 2 CST sessions (n = 19), 3 CST sessions (n = 10) and control (n = 25) were statistically significant on day 24 of the treatment for crying, sleep and colic severity outcomes (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Babies with infantile colic may obtain a complete resolution of symptoms on day 24 by receiving 2 or 3 CST sessions compared to the control group, which did not receive any treatment.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the analgesic efficacy of TENS treatment in patients with renal colic in the emergency department (ED). METHODS: This double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted in a tertiary care ED. Patients with a definitive diagnosis of renal colic were assigned (1:1) as randomized to receive the real TENS with frequency 100 Hz, pulse width 200 microseconds, voltage 2 mA, or placebo with sham TENS. Pain intensity was measured using visual analog scales (VAS) at baseline, after 15 and 30th minutes. RESULTS: A total of 100 patients were included in the final analysis: 50 patients treated with real TENS and 50 patients treated with sham TENS. VAS scores in both groups were similar at baseline. The mean reduction in VAS score at 15 min was 33.3 ± 17.6 (95% Confidence interval (CI): 28.3 to 38.3) for the real TENS group and 14.9 ± 11.6 (95% CI 11.6 to 18.2) for the sham TENS group (mean difference: 18.4 (95% CI: 12.5 to 24.4, P < 0.0001). The mean reduction in VAS score at 30 min was 63.7 ± 21.1 (95% CI: 57.7 to 69.7) for the real TENS group and 14.9 ± 16.2 (95% CI: 19.5 to 10.3) for the sham TENS group (mean difference: 48.8, 95% CI: 41.4 to 56.3, P < 0.0001). Four patients (8%) in the real TENS group and 24 patients (48%) in the sham TENS group required the rescue medication after 30th minutes. CONCLUSIONS: TENS is effective for acute pain treatment in renal colic patients in the ED. TENS therapy could be a treatment option for renal colic.

RESUMEN

The ethyl acetate fraction, the stem bark and the residual methanolic extracts from the leaves of Cola heterophylla (Sterculiaceae) led to the isolation of two new compounds: Heterophynone (1) and methyl ester of Colic acid (6), along with four known triterpenes: betulinic acid (2), oleanolic acid (3), ursolic acid (4) and chletric acid (5). Structures of compounds were established by different spectroscopic methods that included 1D and 2D NMR experiment. The antimicrobial activity of isolated compounds was evaluated against two yeasts, Candida Albicans NR 29456 and Candida Krusei 1415; and five Gram-positive bacterial, Salmonella enteric Serovar Muenchem, Salmonella enteric Serovar Thyphimurium, Staphylococcus aureus NR 46003, Staphylococcus aureus NR46374 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa HM 601). Among tested compounds, Heterophynone was found to be the most active with significant antimicrobial activity against Salmonella enteric Serovar Thyphimurium (MIC = 7.82 µg/mL and MBC = 62.5 µg/mL) and good activity against Candida Albicans NR 29456 (MIC = 62.5 µg/mL).

Background: Here provides a complementary treatment, acupressure at the Qiu acupoint, a novel acupoint, which potentially alleviates renal colic. Materials and methods: 90 patients were included in this study. Acupressure-group patients (n = 46) were administered acupressure at the Qiu acupoint following a preset protocol. Parecoxib sodium-group patients (n = 44) were administered parecoxib sodium (40 mg) (via the direct intravenous route). The visual analog scale (VAS) was used to evaluate pain intensity at baseline and at 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 120 min after initiating the intervention. Linear mixed effects model was performed to detect the rate of decrease of VAS per time and their covariant effect on the efficacy of acupressure. Results: No significant statistical differences in baseline data and VAS scores were observed. The acupressure group obtained lower VAS scores at the 1st, 5th, 10th, and 20th minute than the parecoxib sodium group after initiating the intervention (mean: 4.33 vs. 7.61, mean difference (MD): 3.29, 95% CI: 0.23, 2.84; mean: 2.65 vs. 7.61, MD: 4.96, 95% CI: 4.44, 5.49; mean: 1.63 vs. 6.59, MD: 4.96, 95% CI: 4.48, 5.44; mean: 1.26 vs. 3.64 MD: 2.38, 95% CI: 1.87, 2.88; P < 0.05). The markedly effective rate was similar between the two groups. The linear mixed effects model demonstrated that acupressure at the Qiu point was significantly faster than parecoxib sodium in decreasing VAS scores with an estimate of -2.05 (95% CI: -2.51, -1.59, p = 0.000), especially within 10 minutes with an estimate of 0.18 (95% CI: 0.12, 0.25, p = 0.000). Conclusion: Acupressure at the Qiu acupoint is significantly faster than parecoxib sodium in decreasing VAS scores within 10 minutes. Background: This meta-analysis aimed at investigating the efficacy of acupuncture for relieving renal colic and reducing the risk of analgesic-related complications. Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of acupuncture (acupuncture group) with conventional interventions (control group) were screened from MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane library databases, China Knowledge Network (CNKI), and Airiti Library till July 15, 2022. The primary outcome was the rate of effective pain relief (response rate), while secondary outcomes included the time of onset of pain relief, visual analog scale (VAS) at 30-60 min and risk of side effects. Results: Thirteen eligible studies involving 1,212 participants published between 1992 and 2021 were analyzed. Compared with the control group, patients receiving acupuncture had a higher overall response rate [risk ratio (RR) = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.05-1.19, p = 0.0002, I 2 = 41%, 1,136 patients] (primary outcome) and a faster pain relief [MD = -10.74 min, 95% CI: -12.65 to -8.82, p < 0.00001, I 2 = 87%, 839 patients]. Patients receiving acupuncture had a lower pain score [MD = -0.65, 95% CI: -1.09 to -0.21, p = 0.21, I 2 = 55%, 327 patients] and risk of side effects (RR = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.04-0.26, p < 0.00001, I 2 = 0, 314 patients) compared to those receiving conventional interventions. Results from trial sequence analysis revealed sufficient evidence supporting the beneficial effects of acupuncture on response rate, time to pain relief, and pain score at 30-60 min. Conclusion: Compared with conventional analgesic-based interventions, acupuncture can more efficiently relieve renal colic with fewer adverse effects. The limited number and quality of included studies warrant more clinical RCTs to support our findings. Background: Too much crying is a self-limiting problem and disappears within a few weeks. However, it can lead to maternal depression and parental stress. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of lavender oil inhalation on the duration of night crying within a week of intervention among infants with infantile colic. Methods: In this double-blind randomized clinical trial, the inclusion criteria for infants were being healthy, not taking any medications for colic, having an episode of crying two hours a day, and having a healthy mother. The intervention group received lavender oil inhalation and the control group received sweet almond oil inhalation for seven days. The data pertaining to the duration of crying were collected four times a day (morning, afternoon, evening, and night) via telephone contact. Mothers' mood scores were also assessed at the beginning of the study and on the seventh day of the intervention. Results: At first, the two groups were not different in terms of the duration of crying. After the intervention, however, a significant difference was observed in this regard on all seven days of the study (P < 0.001). Based on the results of the repeated measures analysis, the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The results showed that inhalation of lavender oil at low concentrations could reduce colic symptoms and improve maternal mood.
