Rapeseed, an important oil crop, relies on robust seedling emergence for optimal yields. Seedling emergence in the field is vulnerable to various factors, among which inadequate self-supply of energy is crucial to limiting seedling growth in early stage. SUGAR-DEPENDENT1 (SDP1) initiates triacylglycerol (TAG) degradation, yet its detailed function has not been determined in B. napus. Here, we focused on the effects of plant growth during whole growth stages and energy mobilization during seedling establishment by mutation in BnSDP1. Protein sequence alignment and haplotypic analysis revealed the conservation of SDP1 among species, with a favorable haplotype enhancing oil content. Investigation of agronomic traits indicated bnsdp1 had a minor impact on vegetative growth and no obvious developmental defects when compared with wild type (WT) across growth stages. The seed oil content was improved by 2.0-2.37% in bnsdp1 lines, with slight reductions in silique length and seed number per silique. Furthermore, bnsdp1 resulted in lower seedling emergence, characterized by a shrunken hypocotyl and poor photosynthetic capacity in the early stages. Additionally, impaired seedling growth, especially in yellow seedlings, was not fully rescued in medium supplemented with exogenous sucrose. The limited lipid turnover in bnsdp1 was accompanied by induced amino acid degradation and PPDK-dependent gluconeogenesis pathway. Analysis of the metabolites in cotyledons revealed active amino acid metabolism and suppressed lipid degradation, consistent with the RNA-seq results. Finally, we proposed strategies for applying BnSDP1 in molecular breeding. Our study provides theoretical guidance for understanding trade-off between oil accumulation and seedling energy mobilization in B. napus.

PROBLEM: Emergence delirium (ED) in children post-general anesthesia has been persistently underestimated, impacting the well-being of children, nurses, and even parents. This study employs integrated analysis to establish a comprehensive understanding of ED, including its occurrence and related risk factors, emphasizing the imperative for enhanced awareness and comprehension among pediatric nursing care providers. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using four electronic databases, namely PubMed, CINAHL via EBSCOhost, Embase via Elsevier, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. RESULTS: This meta-analysis included 16 studies involving 9598 children who underwent general anesthesia. The pooled prevalence of ED was 19.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.12 to 0.29), with younger patients exhibiting a higher prevalence of ED. ED research is scant in Africa and is mostly limited to the Asia Pacific region and Northern Europe. Neck and head surgery (odds ratio [OR] = 2.34, 95% CI = 1.29 to 4.27) were significantly associated with ED risk. CONCLUSIONS: ED should be monitored in children who receive general anesthesia. In this study, ED had a prevalence rate of 19.2%, and head and neck surgery were significantly associated with ED risk. Therefore, healthcare professionals should carefully manage and prevent ED in children undergoing general anesthesia. IMPLICATIONS: A comprehensive understanding of ED's prevalence and risk factors is crucial for enhancing nursing care. Adopting a family-centered care approach can empower parents with information to collaboratively care for their children, promoting a holistic approach to pediatric healthcare.

The engagement between markets and cultural hegemonies is shaped by the politics that promote or deny the emergence of fresh legitimations in response to the opportunities offered to consumers by new commodities. In the case of Islam and the assisted reproductive technology (ART) market, core cultural values concerning procreation, family and lineage come into direct conflict with the potential consumer demand generated by new ART technologies. Shaped by the character of multiple Islamic modernities and the authority structures of religion and state, it is the Shi'a-Sunni divide which most illuminates the politics of emergence driving the different Islamic responses to those cultural tensions. In Sunni states the hegemonic challenge of the ART commodity market is contained by the senior clerics, the traditional intellectuals of Islamic authority, often acting in concert with the state apparatus. In contrast, in Shi'a states the flexibility of its religious authority structures underpinned by the principles of ijtihad allows the formation of an alliance between traditional and medical organic intellectuals which facilitates the consumer choice of both ART commodities and legitimating values. However, what remains unresolved is the long-term impact of that trasformismo on the stability of the social structures which the Shi'a moral economy serves.

BACKGROUND: Delayed emergence from general anaesthesia poses a significant perioperative safety hazard. Subanaesthetic doses of ketamine not only deepen anaesthesia but also accelerate recovery from isoflurane anaesthesia; however, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain elusive. Esketamine exhibits a more potent receptor affinity and fewer adverse effects than ketamine and exhibits shorter recovery times after brief periods of anaesthesia. As the paraventricular thalamus (PVT) plays a pivotal role in regulating wakefulness, we studied its role in the emergence process during combined esketamine and isoflurane anaesthesia. METHODS: The righting reflex and cortical electroencephalography were used as measures of consciousness in mice during isoflurane anaesthesia with coadministration of esketamine. The expression of c-Fos was used to determine neuronal activity changes in PVT neurones after esketamine administration. The effect of esketamine combined with isoflurane anaesthesia on PVT glutamatergic (PVTGlu) neuronal activity was monitored by fibre photometry, and chemogenetic technology was used to manipulate PVTGlu neuronal activity. RESULTS: A low dose of esketamine (5 mg kg-1) accelerated emergence from isoflurane general anaesthesia (474 [30] s vs 544 [39] s, P=0.001). Esketamine (5 mg kg-1) increased PVT c-Fos expression (508 [198] vs 258 [87], P=0.009) and enhanced the population activity of PVTGlu neurones (0.03 [1.7]% vs 6.9 [3.4]%, P=0.002) during isoflurane anaesthesia (1.9 [5.7]% vs -5.1 [5.3]%, P=0.016) and emergence (6.1 [6.2]% vs -1.1 [5.0]%, P=0.022). Chemogenetic suppression of PVTGlu neurones abolished the arousal-promoting effects of esketamine (459 [33] s vs 596 [33] s, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that esketamine promotes recovery from isoflurane anaesthesia by activating PVTGlu neurones. This mechanism could explain the rapid arousability exhibited upon treatment with a low dose of esketamine.

Sevoflurane, commonly administered to children as anesthesia, often leads to emergence delirium (ED). Currently, a consensus is lacking among clinicians regarding pharmacological interventions to improve recovery. To determine an effective approach, we compared the effects of several drugs in lowering the incidence of ED after sevoflurane anesthesia in children.We searched online databases for relevant randomized controlled trials (59 studies selected; 5199 NMA-eligible participants) and performed a frequentist network meta-analysis (NMA). This study was registered on PROSPERO (number CRD: 42022329939).All included studies had a low to moderate risk of overall bias. The incidence of ED after sevoflurane anesthesia in children differed according to other drugs administered, and were ranked from high to low according to the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA).Sufentanil (91.2%) and dexmedetomidine (77.6%) were more likely to reduce the incidence (SUCRA value) of ED, whereas the placebo (6.5%), ramelteon (11.1%), and magnesium (18%) were less likely to reduce the incidence of ED. Remifentanil (89.3%) ranked first in shortening emergence time, followed by placebo (82.4%) and ketamine (69.7%). Placebo shortened extubation time, followed by remifentanil (66.5%) and alfentanil (61.4%).Sufentanil and remifentanil lowered sevoflurane-induced ED incidences among children and shortened the emergence time more effectively than other drugs. Most adjuvant drugs that are combined with sevoflurane either do not change or may even prolong extubation time. Further research and clinical trials are required to support and update these conclusions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Some plant species suppress competitors through release of chemical compounds into the environment. As the production of allelochemicals may be costly, it would be beneficial if their production would only be induced when plants experience competition. We tested whether two plant species that frequently co-occur show evidence for induced allelopathy in response to intra- and interspecific competition. METHODS: We used the annual forb Crepidiastrum sonchifolium and the perennial forb Achyranthes bidentata, which are native to China and predominantly occur in ruderal communities, as focal species. We first grew the species without competition, with intraspecific competition and in competition with each other. We chemically analysed aqueous extracts made from these plants to test for evidence that the competition treatments affected the metabolomic profiles of the species. We then tested the effects of the aqueous extracts on seed germination and seedling growth of both plant species. KEY RESULTS: Metabolomic analysis revealed that competition treatments modified the chemical profiles of the two study species. The root lengths of A. bidentata and C. sonchifolium seedlings were reduced by the aqueous plant extracts. For seedling root length of A. bidentata, heterospecific allelopathy was more negative than conspecific allelopathy, but for germination of C. sonchifolium seeds, the reverse was true. Moreover, conspecific allelopathic effects on germination of A. bidentata seeds and on seedling root length of both species were most negative when the aqueous extracts were made from plants that had experienced competition. In the case of seedling root length of A. bidentata, this effect was most negative when the plants had experienced interspecific instead of intraspecific competition. CONCLUSIONS: We showed that plants change their metabolomic profiles in response to competition, and that this correlated with allelopathic inhibition of conspecific seed germination and seedling growth. We suggest that autoallelopathy for seed germination could function as a mechanism to avoid strong competition by keeping the seeds in a dormant state.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated that the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT) is a key wakefulness-controlling nucleus in the thalamus. Therefore, PVT may also be involved in the process of general anesthesia. This study intends to explore the role of PVT in isoflurane anesthesia. METHODS: In the present study, we used the expression of c-Fos to observe the neuronal activity of PVT neurons under isoflurane anesthesia. We further recorded the effect of isoflurane anesthesia on the calcium signal of PVT glutamatergic neurons in real time with the help of calcium fiber photometry. We finally used chemogenetic technology to specifically regulate PVT glutamatergic neurons, and observed its effect on isoflurane anesthesia and cortical electroencephalography (EEG) in mice. RESULTS: We found that glutamatergic neurons of PVT exhibited high activity during wakefulness and low activity during isoflurane anesthesia. Activation of PVT glutamatergic neuronal caused an acceleration in emergence from isoflurane anesthesia accompanied with a decrease in EEG delta power (1-4 Hz). Whereas suppression of PVT glutamatergic neurons induced a delay recovery of isoflurane anesthesia, without affecting anesthesia induction. CONCLUSIONS: Assuming a pharmacokinetic explanation for results can be excluded, these results demonstrate that the PVT is involved in regulating anesthesia emergence.

Colistin is one of the last-resort options for carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infections if novel antibiotics are unavailable, where the development of colistin resistance during treatment represents a major challenge for clinicians. We aimed to investigate the risk factors associated with the development of colistin resistance in patients with CRKP infections following colistin treatment. We conducted a retrospective case-control study of patients with CRKP strains available before and after colistin treatment at a medical center in Taiwan, between October 2016 and November 2020. Cases (n = 35) included patients with an initial colistin-susceptible CRKP (ColS-CRKP) strain and a subsequent colistin-resistant CRKP (ColR-CRKP) strain. Controls (n = 18) included patients with ColS-CRKP as both the initial and subsequent strains. The 30-day mortality rate after the subsequent CRKP isolation was not different between cases and controls (12/35 [34%] versus 5/18 [28%] [P = 0.631]). blaKPC (n = 38) and blaOXA-48 (n = 11) accounted for the major mechanisms of carbapenem resistance. Alterations in mgrB were found in 18/35 (51%) ColR-CRKP strains, and mcr-1 was not detected in any of the strains. More patients received combination therapy in the control group than in the case group (17/18 versus 21/35 [P = 0.008]). The logistic regression model indicated that combination therapy with tigecycline was protective against the acquisition of colistin resistance (odds ratio, 0.17; 95% confidence interval, 0.05 to 0.62 [P = 0.008]). We observed that the inclusion of tigecycline in colistin treatment mitigated the risk of acquiring colistin resistance. These results offer insight into using the combination of tigecycline and colistin for the treatment of CRKP infections in antimicrobial stewardship. IMPORTANCE Treatment of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infections is challenging due to the limited options of antibiotics. Colistin is one of the last-resort antibiotics if novel antimicrobial agents are not available. It is crucial to identify modifiable clinical factors associated with the emergence of resistance during colistin treatment. Here, we found that the addition of tigecycline to colistin treatment prevented the acquisition of colistin resistance. Colistin-tigecycline combination therapy is therefore considered a hopeful option in antimicrobial stewardship to treat CRKP infections.

<b>Background and Objective:</b> <i>Alphitobius diaperinus</i> (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is the major pest in chicken farms. The control of pests using synthetic insecticides is not recommended. Besides its expensive, synthetic insecticides are proved harmful to poultry health, farmworkers and polluting the environment. To explore the sources of bioinsecticides that are cheap and eco-friendly, this study was conducted to evaluate the insecticidal effect of weeds extracts (<i>Chromolaena odorata</i>, <i>Ageratum conyzoides</i> and <i>Tithonia diversifolia</i>) against post-embryonic survival of <i>A. diaperinus</i>. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> The experimental study using a completely randomized design of 2 factors, i.e., 3 types of weeds extract and 6 levels of concentration. The insecticidal effect was observed based on the post-embryonic survival. The post-embryonic survival of larvae was evaluated for 4 weeks by measuring the number of Larvae Released (LR) from the eggs, as well as the number of Adults Emergence (AE). Data were analyzed using Variance Analysis (ANOVA) and continued with the least significant different tests (α<u><</u>0.5). <b>Results:</b> The statistical analysis showed that the differences in extract concentration contributed significant influence (α<u><</u>0.05) on the total number of larvae released and adult emergence. The lowest LR and AE occurred at the 40% concentration level, i.e., on the extract of <i>T. diversifolia</i>, while the highest LR and AE were found in the treatment of <i>C. odorata</i> extract. <b>Conclusion:</b> In this study, all types of extracts have an insecticidal effect on the post-embryonic survival of <i>A. diaperinus</i> but the strongest effect was found in the extract of <i>T. diversifolia</i> in 40% concentration. At last, these findings inform people that the weeds extract, especially <i>T. diversifolia</i> is possible to be developed as bioinsecticides for <i>A. diaperinus</i>.

Objective:To explore the effects of fast-track surgery (FTS) combined with acupuncture at Neiguan acupoint on stress indicators and recovery quality in patients during anesthesia of craniocerebral surgery.Methods:According to block randomization method, 120 patients with craniocerebral trauma meeting inclusion criteria in the hospital were divided into three groups between January 2018 and December 2020, 40 in each group. The control group was given routine awakening intervention, intervention 1 group was given routine awakening intervention and acupuncture at Neiguan acupoint, and intervention 2 group was given FTS and treatment of intervention 1 group. At 10 min after entering the room, immediately after tracheal intubation and immediately after extubation, level of serum cortisol (COR) was detected by electrochemical luminescence apparatus. The level of serum dopamine was detected by ELISA. The blood pressure and heart rates were recorded. The recovery quality during anesthesia was compared, including recovery time, recovery time of spontaneous breathing, extubation time and recovery time of orientation. The cognitive function of patients was evaluated by Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination (NSCE). The incidence of intestinal paralysis, nausea and vomiting, and hospitalization time were observed and recorded during treatment.Results:Immediately after tracheal intubation and extubation, systolic blood pressure in intervention 2 group, intervention 1 group and control group were significantly decreased ( F=12.03, 13.96), levels of serum COR ( F=91.40, 53.76), and dopamine ( F=29.72, 69.39) were significantly decreased ( P<0.01). The recovery time of orientation during anesthesia [(39.09±3.12)min vs. (41.57±3.54)min, (43.84±3.28)min, F=34.65] in intervention 2 group was significantly shorter than that of the intervention 1 group and control group ( P<0.01), and hospitalization time [(9.36±1.78)d vs. (10.92±1.81)d, (12.10±1.95)d, F=1.44] was significantly shorter than that of the intervention 1 group and control group ( P<0.05). Conclusion:The FTS combined with acupuncture at Neiguan acupoint can reduce stress level during anesthesia, improve recovery quality and relieve postoperative cognitive dysfunction in patients undergoing craniocerebral surgery.

BACKGROUND: Emergence delirium (ED) is common in pediatric anesthesia. This dissociative state in which the patient is confused from their surroundings and flailing can be self-injurious and traumatic for parents. Treatment is by administration of sedatives which can prolong recovery. The aim of this study was to determine if exposure to monochromatic blue light (MBL) in the immediate phase of recovery could reduce the overall incidence of emergence delirium in children following general inhalational anesthesia. METHODS: This double blinded randomized controlled study included patients ages 2-6 undergoing adenotonsillectomy. Postoperatively, 104 patients were randomization (52 in each group) for exposure to sham blue or MBL during the first phase (initial 30 min) of recovery. The primary outcome was the incidence of emergence delirium during the first phase. We also examined Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) scores throughout the first phase. RESULTS: Emergence Delirium was reported in 5.9% of MBL patients versus 33.3% in the sham group, p = 0.001. Using logistic regression adjusting for age, weight, gender, ASA classification and PAED scores provided an adjusted relative risk ratio of 0.18; 95% CI (0.06, 0.54); p = 0.001 for patients in the MBL group. 23.5% of MBL patients versus 52.9% of sham patients had either ED or PAED scores of 12 or more throughout the first phase of recovery, p = 0.002. This produced an adjusted relative risk of 0.46, 95% CI (0.29, 0.75), p = 0.001. CONCLUSIONS: Monochromatic blue light represents a non-pharmacologic method to reduce the incidence of emergence delirium and PAED scores in children. Tea plantations in Sri Lanka cover the central hills of the island, where spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsial infection is common. In most cases, the history of tick bite is obscure and eschars are not present. A 45-y-old female experienced massive tick bites while working in her tea plantation. She developed fever 2 d after exposure, but the diagnosis of SFG infection was not considered until a skin rash appeared on the eighth day. She had a very high titer of antirickettsial antibodies detected by immunofluorescence assay and responded to doxycycline. Here, we highlight the high risk of exposure to ticks and tick bites within tea estates and its causal relationship to SFG infection, which is increasing in Sri Lanka. Active case detection, notification, surveillance, and community awareness are imperative. Possible preventative measures for tick bites have to be introduced. There is a need to explore the effectiveness of local remedies currently in use.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can cause chronic lung infections in patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). One option for managing them is the use of linezolid. We hereby report the in-host emergence of linezolid resistance (LR) in MRSA in CF siblings via a population analysis. A collection of 171 MRSA strains from 68 samples were characterized by determining their linezolid Minimal Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs), analyzing the locus of staphylococcal protein A (spa) and whole genome sequencing. Courses of linezolid were retraced. Strains belonged to three spa types (t002, t045, t127) and two sequence types (ST1, ST5). Emergence of LR occurred under treatment, one year apart in both siblings, in the CC5-MRSA-I Geraldine clone harboring the toxic shock syndrome toxin-1-encoding gene. Resistance was related to a G2576T substitution present in a variable number of 23S rRNA gene copies. Susceptible and resistant strains were co-isolated within samples. Single Nucleotide Polymorphism-based analysis revealed complex colonizations by highly diversified, clonally related populations. LR remains rare in MRSA and there are very few longitudinal analyses documenting its emergence. Analyzing a large MRSA collection revealed new aspects of LR emergence: it emerges in specific subclonal lineages resulting from adaptive diversification of MRSA in the CF lung and this heterogeneity of intra-sample resistance may contribute to compromising antibiotic management.

Large quantities of spent coffee grounds (SCG) are generated the last decades, and their recycling is of research interest challenge. In the present study, SCG was tested to substitute peat (P) in substrate mixtures for the production of Brassica seedlings. Seeds of cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage were placed in substrate mixtures containing 0-2.5-5-10% SCG. The mixture of SCG with peat affected several physicochemical characteristics of the growing media, providing also considerable amount of mineral elements for the seedling growth needs. Seed emergence was stimulated in 2.5-5% of SCG for cauliflower and at 2.5% of SCG for cabbage, while 10% of SCG decreased the percentage and increased the mean emergence time of the examined species. Plant biomass and leaf number were increased at 2.5% SCG for broccoli and cabbage but maintained at cauliflower when compared with control. The SCG at 10% decreased stomatal conductance of broccoli and cabbage (including 2.5-5% SCG in cauliflower) while chlorophyll content was increased at 10% of SCG media. The incorporation of SCG impacted the mineral content accumulated in plants with increases in nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus and decreases in magnesium and iron content. Total phenolics and antioxidant activity (DPPH, FRAP) decreased at ≥ 5% SCG at cauliflower and cabbage or unchanged for broccoli when compared with the control. The cabbage seedlings grown in 10% SCG media subjected to stress with increases in the production of hydrogen peroxides and lipid peroxidation, and reflected changes in the antioxidant enzymatic metabolism (catalase, superoxide dismutase). The present study demonstrates that SCG (up to 5%) can be used for seed germination biostimulants and/or partially substitute the peat for Brassica seedling production.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dopamine is well-known to contribute to emergence from anesthesia. Previous studies have demonstrated that the paraventricular thalamus (PVT) in the midline nuclei is crucial for wakefulness. Moreover, the PVT receives dopaminergic projections from the brainstem. Therefore, we hypothesize that the dopaminergic signaling in the PVT plays a role in emergence from isoflurane anesthesia. METHODS: We used c-Fos immunohistochemistry to reveal the activity of PVT neurons in three groups: The first group (iso+ EM- ) underwent the anesthesia protocol and was sacrificed before emergence. The second group (iso+ EM+ ) underwent passive emergence from the same anesthesia protocol. The last group (oxy+ ) received oxygen. D2-like agonist quinpirole (2 or 4 mM) or D2-like antagonist raclopride (2 or 5 mM) was microinjected into the PVT, and their effects on emergence and induction time were analyzed. Surface cortical electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings were used to explore the effects of quinpirole injection into the PVT on cortical excitability during isoflurane anesthesia. The activity of PVT neurons after quinpirole injection was assessed by c-Fos immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The number of c-Fos-positive nuclei for the iso+ EM+ group was significantly higher than the oxy+ and iso+ EM- groups. Application of quinpirole (4 mM) into the PVT shortened emergence time compared with the saline group (p < .01). In contrast, administration of raclopride (2 mM) delayed emergence time (p < .05). Neither quinpirole nor raclopride exerted an effect on induction time. EEG analyses showed that quinpirole (4 mM) decreased the burst suppression ratio during isoflurane anesthesia (p < .01). The number of c-Fos-positive nuclei for the quinpirole (4 mM) group was significantly higher than saline group (p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the activity of PVT neurons is enhanced after emergence from anesthesia, and the dopaminergic signaling in the PVT may facilitate emergence from isoflurane anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of intraoperative magnesium supplementation have been reported. In this prospective, randomized study, the effects of magnesium supplementation during general anaesthesia on emergence delirium and postoperative pain in children were evaluated. METHODS: A total of 66 children aged 2 to 5 years who underwent strabismus surgery were assigned to the magnesium or to the control group. Preoperative anxiety was assessed using the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale. After anaesthesia induction, the magnesium group received an initial loading dose of 30 mg/kg magnesium sulphate over 10 min and, then, continuous infusion of 10 mg/kg per h until 10 min before the end of the surgery. The control group received an equal volume of normal saline via the same regimen. The Paediatric Anaesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) score, pain score, and respiratory events were assessed at the postanaesthetic care unit. RESULTS: Data obtained from 65 children were analyzed. The PAED and pain scores of the two groups did not differ significantly. There were 26 of 33 (78.8%) and 27 of 32 (84.4%) children with emergence delirium in the control and the magnesium groups, respectively (odds ratio 0.69, 95% CI 0.19-2.44; p = 0.561). The preoperative anxiety score was not significantly correlated with the PAED score. The incidence of respiratory events during the emergence period did not differ significantly between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Magnesium supplementation during anaesthesia had no significant effects on the incidence of emergence delirium or postoperative pain in children undergoing strabismus surgery. Seed priming is a promising approach to improve germination, emergence, and seedling growth by triggering pre-germinative metabolism and enhancing seedling vigor. Recently, nanopriming gained importance in seed improvement as a result of the small size and unique physicochemical characteristics of nanomaterials. In the present study, silver and gold nanoparticles were synthesized using onion extracts as the reducing agent. Similarly, the agro-food industrial byproducts citrus seed oil and curcumin-removed turmeric oleoresin were used for the preparation of nanoemulsions. For seed priming, these green-synthesized nanomaterials were incubated with seeds of two onion (Allium cepa L.) cultivars (Legend and 50147) for 72 h, and then the plants were grown in a greenhouse for 3 weeks. Seed priming with these nanomaterials increased seed germination and seedling emergence. One-dimensional 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry metabolomics studies showed that different nanopriming treatments distinctly altered the metabolome of onion seedlings. Seed priming treatments significantly inhibited plant hormones and growth regulators, such as abscisic acid and cis-(+)-12-oxo-phytodienoic acid, and enhanced germination stimulators, such as γ-aminobutyric acid and zeatin, in onion seeds and seedlings. Therefore, these priming treatments have positive impact on improving seed performance and plant growth.

There is increasing interest in effects of radionuclides on non-human species, but methods for studying such effects are not well developed. The aims of the current study were to investigate the effects of uranium mine-affected sediments on non-biting midge Chironomus riparius and to compare sensitivity of different endpoints. The midge larvae were exposed in controlled laboratory conditions to sediments from two ponds downstream from an abandoned uranium mine and a reference pond not receiving water from the mining site. Quartz sand was used as an additional control. Developmental effects were assessed by evaluating emergence of adult midges, body mass, and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in the length of wing upper vein. FA has been suggested to be a sensitive indicator of developmental instability, but the results of previous studies are inconsistent. In the present study, no difference in FA was observed between the treatment groups, but time to emergence was significantly delayed in the contaminated sediments. The approach used in this study (laboratory experiments with sediments from a contaminated site) avoids confounding due to uncontrolled environmental variables and adaptation to long-term contamination, which may mask effects on natural populations. Using this approach, we found no effects on FA of wing length. Time to emergence, in contrast, was found to be a more sensitive endpoint.

In the search of sustainable and environmentally friendly methods for weed control, there is increasing interest in essential oils (EOs) as an approach to reduce synthetic herbicide use. The phytotoxicity of Thymbra capitata, Mentha piperita, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, and Santolina chamaecyparissus EOs against the noxious weed Erigeron bonariensis were evaluated in pre- and post-emergence assays in greenhouse conditions. The EOs were applied at 2, 4, and 8 µL/mL, with Fitoil used as emulsifier. In post-emergence, two ways of application were tested, irrigation and spraying. Several germination parameters (germination %, mean germination time, and synchrony of the germination process) were evaluated in pre-emergence tests, and the phytotoxicity level was assessed in post-emergence. In pre-emergence, all EOs significantly reduced seed germination as compared to the controls, ranking: T. capitata > E. camaldulensis > S. chamaecyparissus > M. piperita. The effectiveness of all EOs varied with the tested dose, always following the rank 2 µL < 4 µL < 8 µL, with T. capitata EO showing full effectiveness even at the lowest dose. In post-emergence, T. capitata was the most effective EO, inducing a rather complete inhibition of plantlet growth at the highest two doses. These EOs demonstrated to have good potential for the formulation of natural herbicides.

Interoception, the ability to feel the body's internal sensations, is an essential aspect of emotional experience. There is mounting evidence that interoception is impaired in common mental health disorders and that poor interoceptive awareness is a major contributor to emotional reactivity, calling for clinical interventions to address this deficit. The manuscript presents a comprehensive theoretical review, drawing on multidisciplinary findings to propose a metatheory of reinforcement mechanisms applicable across a wide range of disorders. We present a reconsideration of operant conditioning through the co-emergence model of reinforcement, which is a neurophenomenological account of the interaction between cognition and interoception, and its consequences on behavior. The model suggests that during memory processing, the retrieval of autobiographical memory (including maladaptive cognition) is dependent upon its co-emerging interoceptive cues occurring at the encoding, consolidation and reconsolidation stages. Accordingly, "interoceptive reinforcement" during emotional distress is a common factor to all emotional disorders and a major cause for relapse. We propose that interoceptive desensitization has transdiagnostic benefits, readily achievable through the cultivation of equanimity during mindfulness training and can be integrated in cognitive and behavioral interventions to permit a transdiagnostic applicability. We summarize the contributions of this approach into 10 specific and testable propositions.
