RESUMEN

The aim of this study is to determine to what extent the addition of chitinase to black soldier fly (BSF) larval meal enriched or not with long-chain PUFA (LC-PUFA) could improve growth, protein digestion processes and gut microbial composition in Nile tilapia. Two different types of BSF meal were produced, in which larvae were reared on substrates formulated with vegetable culture substrate (VGS) or marine fish offal substrate (FOS). The BSF raised on VGS was enriched in α-linolenic acid (ALA), while that raised on FOS was enriched in ALA + EPA + DHA. Six BSF-based diets, enriched or not with chitinase, were formulated and compared with a control diet based on fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO). Two doses (D) of chitinase from Aspergillus niger (2 g and 5 g/kg feed) were added to the BSF larval diets (VGD0 and FOD0) to obtain four additional diets: VGD2, VGD5, FOD2 and FOD5. After 53 d of feeding, results showed that the BSF/FOS-based diets induced feed utilisation, protein efficiency and digestibility, as well as growth comparable to the FMFO control diet, but better than the BSF/VGS-based diets. The supplementation of chitinase to BSF/FOS increased in fish intestine the relative abundance of beneficial microbiota such as those of the Bacillaceae family. The results showed that LC-PUFA-enriched BSF meal associated with chitinase could be used as an effective alternative to fishmeal in order to improve protein digestion processes, beneficial microbiota and ultimately fish growth rate.

BACKGROUND: There is a global need to develop new therapies to treat infectious diseases and tackle the rise in antimicrobial resistance. To date, the larvae of the Black Solider Fly, Hermetia illucens, have the largest repertoire of antimicrobial peptides derived from insects. Antimicrobial peptides are of particular interest in the exploration of alternative antimicrobials due to their potent action and reduced propensity to induce resistance compared with more traditional antibiotics. RESULTS: The predicted attacin from H. illucens, Hill_BB_C10074, was first identified in the transcriptome of H. illucens populations that had been fed a plant-oil based diet. In this study, recombinant Hill_BB_C10074 (500 µg/mL), was found to possess potent antimicrobial activity against the serious Gram-negative pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Sequence and structural homology modelling predicted that Hill_BB_C10074 formed a homotrimeric complex that may form pores in the Gram-negative bacterial outer membrane. In vitro experiments defined the antimicrobial action of Hill_BB_C10074 against P. aeruginosa and transmission electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed the outer membrane disruptive power of Hill_BB_C10074 which was greater than the clinically relevant antibiotic, polymyxin B. CONCLUSIONS: Combining predictive tools with in vitro approaches, we have characterised Hill_BB_C10074 as an important insect antimicrobial peptide and promising candidate for the future development of clinical antimicrobials.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can severely affect humans and animals and is difficult to treat. Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens; Hi) larvae (BSFL) are a sustainable source of protein. However, no studies exist on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions of BSFL or fermented BSFL with respect to IBD. In this study, riboflavin-producing Lactobacillus plantarum KCCM12757P was isolated from a fish farm tank, and in conjunction with hot water-extracted Hi (HeHi) (termed HeHi_Lp), was used to determine optimal fermentation conditions to increase vitamin B2 concentration. This in vivo study investigated the therapeutic effects and mechanistic role of HeHi_Lp in chronic colitis-induced murine models. Histological changes, inflammatory cytokine levels, and intestinal barrier function were explored. Gut microbial communities and gene expression in the nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling pathway were also studied. HeHi_Lp remarkably reduced the disease activity index, inflammatory cytokine (inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase 2, tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin (IL-6 and IL-1ß) levels, and increased body weight and colon length. HeHi_Lp administration significantly raised zonula occludens 1, occludin and claudin 1 and improved the composition of the gut microbiota and beneficial intestinal bacteria. These results suggest that HeHi_Lp can be used as a dietary supplement in pet food to alleviate colitis.

The aim was to study whether provitamin A (proVA), which can bioaccumulate in black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), is bioavailable and can restore VA status in mammals. A model for studying the metabolism of this vitamin, the gerbil, was either fed a standard diet (C+ group), a diet without VA (C-), a diet in which VA was provided by ß-carotene (ß-C) from sweet potatoes (SP), or a diet in which VA was provided by ß-C from BSFL that had been fed sweet potatoes (BSFL). The animals were killed at the end of the supplementation period and ß-C, retinol and retinyl esters were measured in plasma and liver. As expected ß-C was not detected in plasma and liver of the C+ and C- groups. ß-C concentrations were lower (p < 0.05) in plasma and liver of the BSFL group as compared to the SP group. Liver retinol and retinyl ester concentrations were lower in the C- group than in all the other groups (p < 0.05). These concentrations were not significantly different in the C+ and SP groups while they were lower in the BSFL group (p < 0.05 for retinyl oleate and retinyl linoleate). In total, the liver stock of retinol equivalent was almost twice lower in the BSFL group than in the SP group. Thus, ß-C present in the BSFL matrix is bioavailable and capable of improving VA status, but this matrix decreases its effectiveness by a factor of around two compared to the sweet potato matrix.

Replacement of soybean oil by insect fat from Hermetia illucens (HI) has been reported to increase the proportions of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and decrease those of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in total lipids of breast and thigh meat in broilers. Since the susceptibility of meat to oxidation is strongly dependent on its PUFA content, the present study hypothesised that replacement of soybean oil by HI larvae fat in broiler diets reduces the formation of lipid oxidation products, including oxidation products of cholesterol and phytosterols, in heat-processed breast muscle of broilers. To test this hypothesis, 100 male, 1-day-old Cobb 500 broilers were assigned to three groups and fed three different nutrient adequate diets, which varied only in the fat source (group HI-0: 0% HI larvae fat and 5% soybean oil; group HI-2.5: 2.5% HI larvae fat and 2.5% soybean oil; group HI-5.0: 5.0% HI larvae fat and 0% soybean oil), in a three-phase feeding system for 35 days. While the growth performance of the broilers was not different, the absolute and relative breast muscle weights were higher in group HI-5.0 than in group HI-0 (p < 0.05). The proportions of C12:0, C14:0, C14:1, C16:0, C16:1 and total SFA were higher and those of C18:1, C18:2 n-6, C18:3 n-3 and total PUFA were lower in breast muscle total lipids of group HI-5.0 than in groups HI-2.5 and HI-0 (p < 0.05). Lipidomic analysis of breast muscle revealed that the concentration of triacylglycerols was 46% and 53% lower in groups HI-2.5 and HI-5.0, respectively, than in group HI-0 (p < 0.05), whereas all other lipid classes detected did not differ among groups. Concentrations of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, 7α-hydroxycholesterol, 7ß-hydroxycholesterol and total cholesterol oxidation products in heat-processed breast muscle were lower in group HI-5.0 than in group HI-0 (p < 0.05). Concentrations of oxidation products of phytosterols in heat-processed breast muscle were generally much lower than those of cholesterol oxidation products and did not differ between the three groups of broilers. In conclusion, complete replacement of soybean oil with HI larvae fat in broiler diets strongly alters the fatty acid composition of breast muscle total lipids and reduce lipid oxidation of the breast muscle during heat-processing.

Larvae of black soldier flies, Hermetia illucens, are increasingly used for biological conversion of animal and plant wastes into ingredients of animal feeds on an industrial scale. The presence of pathogenic microorganisms in harvested larvae may be a serious problem for wide-scale adoption of this technology. Fortunately, black soldier fly larvae may have some antimicrobial properties. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium associated with various environments that can be pathogenic to humans and farmed animals. We tested whether black soldier fly larvae suppress MRSA on potato substrate. Autoclaved potatoes containing black soldier fly larvae (P+BSFL), potatoes inoculated with MRSA and containing black soldier fly larvae (P+MRSA+BSFL), and potatoes inoculated with MRSA (P+MRSA) were incubated in glass jars. Substrate samples were taken after 3 and 7 days of incubation and plated on Trypticase soy agar (TSA) and Staphylococcus medium 110 agar (SA) to quantify total bacteria and MRSA, respectively. DNA was extracted from potato substrates on both days and sequenced to assess bacterial and fungal diversity using 515F/806R and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1/2 primers, respectively, and QIIME 2.0 software. Both total bacterial and MRSA-specific CFU were reduced in the presence of black soldier fly larvae, with a larger reduction for the latter. Twenty-five bacterial genera and 3 fungal genera were detected. Twenty bacterial genera were shared among the treatments and the days, but their relative abundances often varied. Among the most abundant genera, only Enterococcus and Lactococcus were universally present. Our findings confirm antimicrobial properties of black soldier fly larvae. IMPORTANCE Larvae of black soldier flies, Hermetia illucens, may be used to provide an environmentally sustainable and economically viable method for biological conversion of animal and plant wastes into ingredients of animal feeds on an industrial scale. However, contamination of harvested larvae by pathogenic microorganisms inhabiting decaying substrates may be a serious problem for wide-scale adoption of this technology. Fortunately, black soldier fly larvae may have some antimicrobial properties, including suppression of several common pathogens. Our study showed that such a suppression applies to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which is a ubiquitous bacterium pathogenic to animals (including humans).

This study aimed to determine to what extend the addition of chitinase to black soldier fly larvae (BSF) meals enriched with either PUFA or LC-PUFA could improve the gut health of Nile tilapia and increase its immune status. Two types of BSF meals enriched with either α-linolenic acid (ALA) or ALA + eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were produced using BSF larvae cultured on vegetable substrates (VGS) or fish offal substrates (FOS), respectively. Seven diets were formulated: a control FMFO diet and two other control diets VGD0 vs FOD0 containing the meals of each type of BSF meal as total replacement for fishmeal (FM) and fish oil (FO), as well as four diets supplemented with chitinase. Two doses of commercial chitinase from Aspergillus niger (2 g/kg and 5 g/kg of feed) were supplemented to the other diets VGD0 and FOD0 to formulate VGD2, VGD5, FOD2 and FOD5. After 53 days of feeding, FOD5 diet induced a similar growth performance as the FMFO control diet, while a significant decrease of growth was observed for the other BSF larval-based diets. BSF/FOS meal led to higher SGR of fish than BSF/VGS, as for the FOD5 compared to VGD5. At day 53, lysozyme values showed an increasing trend in fish fed all the BSF-based diets, especially those fed the VGD5. After the Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection (day 54), the same increasing trend was observed in lysozyme activity, and modulation was observed only in the VGD5 fish. ACH50 activity was reduced by the BSF-based diets except for the FOD5 diet at day 53, and LPS modulation was only observed for the VGS-chitinase-based diets at day 54. Peroxidase activity and total immunoglobulin (Igs) blood level were not affected by substrate, chitinase dose or LPS injection. At day 53, the low or high dose of chitinase increased the expressions of tlr2, il-1ß and il-6 genes in the head kidney of fish fed the BSF/VGS diets compared to those fed the VGD0 or FMFO control diets. At day 54 after LPS injection, the high dose of chitinase decreased the expressions of tlr5 gene in the spleen and mhcII-α gene in the head kidney of fish fed FOD5 diets compared to those fed FOD0 diets. BSF/VGS but not BSF/FOS based diets increased fish sub-epithelial mucosa (SM) and lamina propria (LP) thickness and the number of goblet cells (GC) in fish, but dietary chitinase seemed to prevent some of these effects, especially at low dose. Results showed that chitinase supplementation of 5 g/kg of chitinase to a BSF-based diet enriched with LC-PUFA improved growth, prevented histological changes in the proximal intestine and enhanced some innate immune functions of Nile tilapia without any clear booster effect after challenge with E. coli LPS.

1. Due to the increasing global demand for more sustainably produced animal protein, there is an intensive search for feeds to replace soybeans. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) appear to have great potential for replacing soybeans in poultry diets. The main objective of this study was to determine if the nutritional value of BSFL is superior to soybeans when feeding organic broilers, since smaller amounts of BSFL could replace the soybean content in the feed, thus saving even more resources.2. Eighty Hubbard S757, a slow growing organic broiler type, were fattened for 63 d, spending the last 49 d on one of five diets. Two soybean cake- and soybean oil-based diets (SS, SS-) were compared with three diets based on partially defatted BSFL meal and BSFL fat from two origins (AA-, AB-, BB-). Different from diet SS, diets SS-, AA-, AB-and BB- were designed with approximately 20% less lysine and methionine. Growth (n = 16), metabolisability, body nitrogen retention, carcase and meat quality (n = 8) were evaluated.3. Broilers of the insect-based feeding groups, AA- and AB-, grew similarly well compared to those of group SS. They also retained more nitrogen in the body than those fed BB- and SS-. Breast meat yield was higher with AA- and AB- than with BB- and SS-, but still lower than with SS. Dietary variations in physicochemical meat quality were of low practical relevance. Diet BB- resulted in a more yellow skin and meat. The fatty acid profile of the breast meat lipids reflected the high lauric acid proportion of the BSFL lipids, resulting in up to 80 times higher proportions than when feeding the soybean-based diets.4. The results indicate that high-quality BSFL, depending on their origin, may indeed be superior to soybean protein, but that the meat lipids from BSFL-fed broilers can contain significant amounts of lauric acid, which, from a human nutrition perspective, could have a negative impact on meat quality.

Inadequately treated biodegradable waste is considered an environmental, social and economic threat worldwide, which call for great attention. Waste treatment with larvae of the black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) complies with the concepts of circular economy, as it enables the transformation of these wastes into marketable products, closing loops and promoting circularity. The processing residues of the treatment (frass) is constantly generated in waste management facilities in large volumes, and this product can be used as an organic fertilizer in agriculture, stimulating a transition to a circular economy. However, many aspects related to frass are still unknown, such as its varying composition of nutrients, microorganisms and bioactive compounds, its post-processing requirements for improved biological stabilization, its behavior in the soil and action in the plants' metabolism, among other aspects. In this review article, we highlight the potential of frass from BSF larvae treatment of biodegradable waste in the world market regarding its possible use as a fertilizer, summarize recent results with this novel product and point towards future research perspectives.

Black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) larvae are considered as insects with a high potential to convert organic waste into high-value products. The objective of this study was to investigate the growth performance, waste reduction efficiency, and nutritional composition of BSF reared on different ratios of coconut endosperm (C) and soybean curd residue (S), with or without supplementation, compared to standard diets (Gainesville: G and starter chicken diet: CK). Seven-day-old larvae were randomly divided into eight experimental groups (G, CK, and three different ratios of C and S with or without supplementation) with three replicates with an equal weight of larvae. The supplement contained calcium, phosphorus, amino acids, and a mineral-vitamin premix which was formulated to correlate with CK. Each replicate was terminated, measured, and evaluated when 40% of larvae had reached prepupal stage. The highest larval weight gain was presented in BSF fed CK, followed by those fed coconut endosperm and soybean curd residue at a ratio of 20:80 (C20S80), and coconut endosperm and soybean curd residue at a ratio of 50:50 (C50S50) without supplementation (numbers after C and S represent their percentage in the formulation; p < 0.001). Harvesting was delayed in the BSF fed C80S20 with and without supplementation (p < 0.001). The number of total larvae and prepupae was not significantly different between groups (p > 0.05). The greatest waste reduction efficiency was observed in the G, C50S50, and C20S80 groups without supplementation (p < 0.001). All groups with supplementation had a higher proportion of ash in both larvae and prepupae compared to non-supplemented groups (p < 0.001), but lower growth performance. The highest percentage of crude protein in larvae was presented in the Gainesville and C20S80 groups followed by the CK and C50S50 groups (p < 0.001). Equal proportions of C and S without supplementation are suggested as a rearing substrate. However, growth performance was lower than for CK; therefore, further studies could investigate cost-efficient techniques to promote this parameter.

Hermetia illucens larvae are among the most promising insects for use as food or feed ingredients due to their ability to convert organic waste into biomass with high-quality proteins. In this novel food or feed source, the absence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their antibiotic resistance (AR) genes, which could be horizontally transferred to animal or human pathogens through the food chain, must be guaranteed. This study was conducted to enhance the extremely scarce knowledge on the occurrence of AR genes conferring resistance to the main classes of antibiotics in a rearing chain of H. illucens larvae and how they were affected by rearing substrates based on coffee silverskin supplemented with increasing percentages of Schizochytrium limacinum or Isochrysis galbana microalgae. Overall, the PCR and nested PCR assays showed a high prevalence of tetracycline resistance genes. No significant effect of rearing substrates on the distribution of the AR genes in the H. illucens larvae was observed. In contrast, the frass samples were characterized by a significant accumulation of AR genes, and this phenomenon was particularly evident for the samples collected after rearing H. illucens larvae on substrates supplemented with high percentages (>20%) of I. galbana. The latter finding indicates potential safety concerns in reusing frass in agriculture.

Hermetia illucens larvae meal (HILM) are rich in proteins and chitin, and represent an innovative feed ingredient for animals. However, little is known about the intestinal bacteria and immune homeostasis response of HILM as a fishmeal replacement on weanling piglets. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the changes in specific ileal and cecal bacterial populations and their metabolic profiles, and ileal immune indexes in weanling piglets fed with a diet containing HILM. A total of 128 weanling piglets were fed either a basal diet or 1 of 3 diets with 1%, 2%, and 4% HILM (HI0, HI1, HI2, and HI4, respectively). Each group consisted of 8 pens (replicates), with 4 pigs per pen. After 28 d of feeding, 8 barrows per treatment were euthanized, the ileal and cecal digesta, and ileal mucosa were collected for analyzing bacterial population and metabolic profiles, and immune indexes, respectively. Results showed that HILM increased (P < 0.05, maximum in HI2) the number of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in the ileum and cecum, but quadratically decreased (P < 0.05, minimum in HI2) the number of Escherichia coli. In the cecum, the number of Firmicutes, Ruminococcus, Clostridium cluster IV, and Prevotella showed a quadratic response to increasing (P < 0.05, maximum in HI2) HILM levels. Lactate and butyrate concentrations in the ileum and cecum were quadratically increased (P < 0.05, maximum in HI2) with increasing HILM levels. In the cecum, the amines, phenol, and indole compounds concentrations were quadratically decreased (P < 0.05, minimum in HI2) with increasing HILM levels, while total short-chain fatty acids and acetate concentrations were quadratically increased (P < 0.05, maximum in HI2). In the ileum, the TLR4, NF-κB, MyD88, and TNF-α mRNA expressions were quadratically decreased (P < 0.05, minimum in HI2) with increasing HILM levels, while the mRNA expression of IL-10, barrier function (MUC1, ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin-2), and development-related genes (IGF-1, GLP-2, and EGF) was quadratically increased (P < 0.05, maximum in HI2). Furthermore, the changes in the mucosal gene expression were associated with changes in the bacterial populations and their metabolites. Collectively, these results showed that a diet supplemented with 2% HILM affected specific bacterial populations and metabolic profiles, and maintained ileal immune status. These findings provide new insights into the use of insect meal as a suitable alternative protein source for swine feeding.

Edible insects are advocated as sustainable and healthy food and feed. However, commercially produced insects are often low in n-3 fatty acids and have suboptimal n-6/n-3 ratios. A certain amount and proportion of these FAs is required to optimize human health. Flaxseed oil consists primarily (57%) out of alpha-linolenic acid. An experiment was conducted to quantify the effect of flaxseed oil provision on fatty acid composition and to determine the quantity needed to attain a beneficial n-6/n-3 ratio. Three species were used in the experiment: house crickets (Acheta domesticus [L.]), lesser mealworms (Alphitobius diaperinus [Pfanzer]) and black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens [L.]). These were provided with either a control diet or a diet enriched with 1%, 2%, or 4% flaxseed oil during their larval/nymphal stage. Fatty acid profiles of diets and insects were determined via GC-MS. The three species had distinct fatty acid profiles on all four diets, but responded similarly to flaxseed oil addition. For each percent added to the diet, the alpha-linolenic acid content of the insects increased by 2.3%-2.7%. Four percent addition increased the n-3 fatty acid content 10-20 fold in the three species and thereby strongly decreased n-6/n-3 ratios from 18-36 to 0.8-2.4. A ratio below 5 is considered optimal for human health and was achieved by 2% flaxseed oil inclusion for house crickets and lesser mealworms, and at 1% inclusion for black soldier flies. Adding a source of n-3 fatty acids to insect diets can thus improve the nutritional quality of insects.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of partial or total replacement of finisher diet soybean oil with black soldier fly (Hermethia illucens L.; HI) larva fat on the growth performance, carcass traits, blood parameters, intestinal morphology and histological features of broiler chickens. At 21 days of age, a total of 120 male broiler chickens (Ross 308) were randomly allocated to three experimental groups (five replicates and eight birds/pen). To a basal control diet (C; 68.7 g/kg as fed of soybean oil), either 50% or 100% of the soybean oil was replaced with HI larva fat (HI50 and HI100 group, respectively). Growth performance was evaluated throughout the trial. At day 48, 15 birds (three birds/pen) per group were slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. Carcass yield and proportions of carcass elements were recorded. Blood samples were taken from each slaughtered chicken for haematochemical index determination. Morphometric analyses were performed on the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Samples of liver, spleen, thymus, bursa of fabricius, kidney and heart were submitted to histological investigations. Growth performance, carcass traits, haematochemical parameters and gut morphometric indexes were not influenced by the dietary inclusion of HI larva fat. Histopathological alterations developed in the spleen, thymus, bursa of fabricius and liver and were identified in all of the experimental groups, but HI larva fat inclusion did not significantly affect (P>0.05) the severity of the histopathological findings. The present study suggests that 50% or 100% replacement of soybean oil with HI larva fat in broiler chickens diets has no adverse effects on growth performance or blood parameters and had no beneficial effect on gut health.

The black soldier fly Hermetia illucens is used for the bioconversion of organic waste into feed for livestock and aquaculture, and is economically among the most important farmed insects in the world. The larvae can be fed on agricultural waste and even liquid manure, resulting in highly unpredictable pathogen levels and dietary conditions. Here we show that H. illucens larvae express a remarkably expanded spectrum of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), many of which are induced by feeding on a diet containing high bacterial loads. The addition of sulfonated lignin, cellulose, chitin, brewer's grains or sunflower oil revealed the diet-dependent expression profiles of AMPs in the larvae. The highest number of AMPs and the highest levels of AMP expression were induced by feeding larvae on diets supplemented with protein or sunflower oil. Strikingly, the diet-dependent expression of AMPs translated into diet-dependent profiles of inhibitory activities against a spectrum of bacteria, providing an intriguing example for the emerging field of nutritional immunology. We postulate that the fine-tuned expression of the expanded AMP repertoire mediates the adaptation of the gut microbiota to the digestion of unusual diets, and this feature could facilitate the use of H. illucens for the bioconversion of organic waste.

INTRODUCCIÓN: Hermetia illucens, díptero de la familia Stratiomyidae es una especie reportada para Cuba relativamente frecuente en todo el territorio nacional. Ha sido incriminada como productora de miasis en humanos y animales. OBJETIVO: reportar por primera vez en Cuba una miasis entérica producida por esta especie. MÉTODOS: la paciente, una mujer blanca de 26 años presentó un cuadro de deyecciones líquidas posprandiales con cólicos abdominales. Al ingerir una infusión de plantas medicinales a partir de incienso (Artemisa abrotanum L.), hierba buena (Mentha nemorosa Willd.) y manzanilla (Matricaria chamomilla L.) expulsó 5 larvas (2 grandes y 3 pequeñas). Se decidió su ingreso durante una semana pero no se obtuvieron nuevas larvas, una gastroscopia realizada mostró gastritis antral crónica con focos de agudización; se determinaron otras parasitosis por lo que se le indicó mebendazol. RESULTADOS: de las larvas expulsadas una fue llevada al Departamento de Entomología Médica del Instituto de Medicina Tropical Pedro Kourí, donde fue determinada taxonómicamente como Hermetia illucens. CONCLUSIONES: este reporte junto a lo conocido en la literatura mundial muestra la posibilidad de que miasis por esta especie ocurran con cierta frecuencia, sobre todo en los meses de verano al ingerir frutas muy maduras y sin lavar; se deberá alertar a los médicos de esta posible miasis a ocurrir, promocionar las medidas higiénicas a ser tomadas al ingerir frutas y valorar el estudio de las propiedades antiparasitarias de la especie Artemisa abrotanum L(AU)

OBJECTIVE: to report for the first time in Cuba, the occurrence of intestinal myiasis caused by this species. METHODS: the patient, a white woman aged 26 years presented with a picture of postprandial fluid discharges accompanied by abdominal pain. When the patient took an infusion of medicinal plants such as incense (Artemisa abrotanum L.), mint (Mentha nemorosa Wild) and camomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.), five larvae were ejected (2 large and 3 small). It was decided to admit the patient to the hospital for a week, but not more larvae were ejected. A gastroscopy showed antral chronic gastritis with acute foci and also other types of parasitosis, so Mebendazol was prescribed. RESULTS: one of the ejected larvae was taken to the Medical Entomology Department of Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine where it was taxonomically identified as Hermetia illucens. CONCLUSIONS: this report together with the pieces of knowledge provided by the world literature show the possibility that myasis caused by this species may occur in summer months when ripe unwashed fruits are consumed; physicians should be warned about this possible myiasis, hygienic measures should be applied when taking fruits and the study of antiparasitic properties of Artemisa abrotanum L. must be assessed(AU)
