BACKGROUND: Lack of standardized assessments that explicitly quantify performance during prosthetic grip selection poses difficulty determining whether efforts to improve the design of multi-grip hands and their control approaches are successful. In this study, we developed and validated a novel assessment of multi-grip prosthetic performance: The Coffee Task. METHODS: Individuals without limb loss completed the Box and Block Test and two versions of the Coffee Task - Continuous and Segmented - with a myoelectric prosthetic emulator. On different days, participants selected prosthetic grips using pattern recognition and trigger control. Outcomes of the Continuous and Segmented Coffee Task were completion time and number of errors, respectively. Two independent raters assessed outcomes of the Coffee Task using video recordings to determine inter-rater reliability. Known-group validity was assessed by comparing outcomes with the emulator to those with an intact limb. Convergent validity was assessed through the correlation of the Coffee Task outcomes and those of the Box and Blocks Test. Responsiveness to changes with practice and control approach were assessed using the standardized response mean (SRM). RESULTS: Inter-rater reliability was high for both versions of the Coffee Task (Intra-class coefficient > 0.981). Coffee Task outcomes were moderately correlated with the Box and Blocks outcomes (|r| ≥ 0.412, p ≤ 0.007). Participants completed the Coffee Task faster with their intact limb than with the emulator (p < 0.001). Both versions of the Coffee Task were responsive to changes with training (SRM ≥ 0.81) but not control approach (SRM ≤ 0.12). CONCLUSIONS: The Coffee Task is reliable, has good known-group and convergent validity, and is responsive to changes due to practice. Future work should assess whether the Coffee Task is feasible and reliable for people with upper limb loss who use multi-grip prostheses.

PURPOSE: To determine the characteristics of dental implant transmucosal surfaces that influence soft tissue attachment and marginal bone loss (MBL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library electronic databases were searched based on predefined PICO eligibility criteria. Data from animal studies that compared junctional epithelium and connective tissue attachment and MBL from 4 days to 72 weeks were analyzed. The risk of bias was performed with the Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory Animal Experimentation tool. A rank analysis evaluation of data was performed, and the most frequently appearing materials/surfaces for each tissue compartment were identified. RESULTS: The search identified 3,549 studies, 28 of which were eligible for analysis, with an average risk of bias of 28% ± 10%. Machined, polished, etched, sandblasted, or coated titanium and zirconia materials/surfaces were most frequently examined. Several studies investigated lithium disilicate, polyether ether ketone (PEEK) or polyether ketone ketone (PEKK), aluminum oxide, and gold. Based on ranking and frequency of use at different time points, titanium grade IV (Ti-4) microthreads with a polished neck area most frequently supported natural tooth-like junctional epithelial attachment (≤ 1.5 mm), while machined Ti-4 and machined titanium grade V (Ti-5) most frequently supported connective tissue attachment (≤ 1.25 mm) and led to the least MBL (≤ 0.75 mm). CONCLUSIONS: Analyzed data suggest that Ti-4 microthreads with a polished neck area and machined Ti-4 and Ti-5 were the materials/surfaces of choice for the transmucosal part of implants. However, the extensive heterogeneity in reported studies precludes solid identification of the best materials/surfaces.

This systematic review evaluates the impact of Vitamin D levels on dental implant osseointegration, hypothesizing that optimal Vitamin D enhances success rates, and aims to synthesize data on its relationship with clinical outcomes in implantology. A comprehensive search across PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases included seven peer-reviewed articles meeting the criteria for the review. These studies, conducted between 2008 and 2021, included human subjects and explicitly correlated serum Vitamin D levels with dental implant outcomes, following PRISMA guidelines. The selected studies involved 1462 participants and examined 4450 dental implants. Key findings included a varied implant loss rate ranging from 3.9% to 11.4% across the studies. One study reported a 9.8% implant loss rate, yet found no significant association between Vitamin D receptor polymorphism and implant success. Another study indicated successful implantation following Vitamin D3 supplementation, even in severe deficiency cases. The highest implant loss rate (11.1%) was observed in severely Vitamin D-deficient patients, particularly when compounded by risk factors such as smoking and periodontal disease. Additionally, one study noted significantly improved bone density following post-surgical Vitamin D supplementation for up to 12 weeks. The review supports a link between sufficient Vitamin D levels and successful dental implant osseointegration, suggesting Vitamin D deficiency as a potential risk factor for increased failure and advocating for Vitamin D evaluations in pre-surgical planning to potentially enhance implantology outcomes.

PURPOSE: Past decade has seen a renewed interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques (MISTs) for management of enlarged prostate. This narrative review aims to explore newer MIST for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which are not yet integrated into established societal guidelines. METHODS: We conducted a literature search across PubMed, Google Scholar, and FDA ClinicalTrials.gov databases on June 1st, 2023, to identify studies published within the past decade exploring various MISTs for BPH. Additionally, we gathered insights from abstracts presented in meetings of professional associations and corporate websites. We broadly classified these procedures into three distinct categories: energy-based, balloon dilation, and implant/stent treatments. We collected detail information about the device, procedure details, its inclusion and exclusion criteria, and outcome. RESULTS: Our review reveals that newer energy-based MISTs include Transperineal Laser Ablation, Transurethral Ultrasound Ablation, and High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. In the sphere of balloon dilation, Transurethral Columnar Balloon Dilation and the Optilume BPH Catheter System were gaining momentum. The noteworthy implants/stents that are on horizon include Butterfly Prostatic Retraction Device, Urocross Expander System, Zenflow Spring System, and ProVee Urethral Expander System. CONCLUSION: The exploration of various MISTs reflects ongoing efforts to enhance patient care and address limitations of existing treatments. This review provides a bird-eye view and valuable insights for urologists and researchers seeking to navigate the dynamic landscape of MISTs in the quest for effective and minimally invasive solutions for enlarged prostates.

PURPOSE: Ozone is a potent antioxidant agent which presents an important antimicrobial action and many other biological effects. Although ozone therapy has been widely described and summarized in several other Dentistry areas recently, the studies concerning Dental Implantology have not been systematically compiled and evaluated. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ozone therapy in dental implant procedures. METHODS: MEDLINE (via PUBMED), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and OpenGrey databases were searched (up to, and including, January 23, 2023) for studies in the English language. In addition, the reference lists of the articles were manually examined. Only interventional studies (controlled clinical trials, randomized or not) were considered eligible for inclusion. The risk of bias in each included study was assessed using the Cochrane tool for assessing risk of bias in randomized trials - version 2. RESULTS: 71 potentially eligible records were retrieved but only 5 articles were evaluated and considered eligible for inclusion. Among the studies, 2 addressed clinical situations related to implant insertion, and 3 involved pathological conditions affecting implants in function. Furthermore, only one randomized clinical trial was categorized as low risk of bias. CONCLUSION: The adjuvant use of ozone therapy may positively affect some outcomes in Implant Dentistry, both in treating pathological conditions and conducting rehabilitation (implant installation, secondary implant stability). However, as most studies have a high risk of bias and high heterogeneity, a definitive conclusion cannot be drawn.

In vitro tests using bone cells to evaluate the osteogenic potential of biomaterials usually employ the osteogenic medium (OM). The lack of correlation frequently reported between in vitro and in vivo studies in bone biomaterials, makes necessary the evaluation of the impact of osteogenic supplements on these results. This study analysed the proteomic profiles of human osteoblasts (HOb) cultured in the media with and without osteogenic agents (ascorbic acid and ß-glycerol phosphate). The cells were incubated for 1 and 7 days, on their own or in contact with Ti. The comparative Perseus analysis identified 2544 proteins whose expression was affected by osteogenic agents. We observed that the OM strongly alters protein expression profiles with a complex impact on multiple pathways associated with adhesion, immunity, oxidative stress, coagulation, angiogenesis and osteogenesis. OM-triggered changes in the HOb intracellular energy production mechanisms, with key roles in osteoblast maturation. HOb cultured with and without Ti showed enrichment in the skeletal system development function due to the OM. However, differentially expressed proteins with key regenerative functions were associated with a synergistic effect of OM and Ti. This synergy, caused by the Ti-OM interaction, could complicate the interpretation of in vitro results, highlighting the need to analyse this phenomenon in biomaterial testing.

Abstract Objective the aim of this study was to analyze the influence of ozone therapy (OZN) on peri-implant bone repair in critical bones by installing osseointegrated implants in the tibia of ovariectomized rats. Methodology ovariectomy was performed on 30 Wistar rats, aged six months (Rattus novergicus), and, after 90 days, osseointegrated implants were installed in each tibial metaphysis. The study groups were divided into the animals that received intraperitoneal ozone at a concentration of 700 mcg/kg — OZ Group (n=15) — and a control group that received an intraperitoneal saline solution and, for this reason, was named the SAL group (n=15). The applications for both groups occurred during the immediate post-operative period on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th day post-surgery. At various stages (14, 42, and 60 days), the animals were euthanized, and tests were performed on their tibiae. These tests include histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses, computerized microtomography, sampling in light-cured resin for calcified sections, and confocal microscopy. The obtained data were then analyzed using One-way ANOVA and the Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, and student t-tests (P<0.05). Results our findings indicate that the OZ group (3.26±0.20 mm) showed better cellular organization and bone neoformation at 14 days (SAL group, 0.90±1.42 mm) (P=0.001). Immunohistochemistry revealed that osteocalcin labeling was moderate in the OZ group and mild in the SAL group at 14 and 42 days post-surgery. The data from the analysis of calcified tissues (microtomography, histometric, and bone dynamism analysis) at 60 days showed no statistically significant differences between the groups (P=0.32). Conclusion it was concluded that ozone therapy anticipated the initial phases of the peri-implant bone repair process.

Immediate implants have been gaining popularity in recent times. There are many adjuvant techniques that are followed before implant placement, which have recently shown hopeful results. For this reason, the current comparative study analyzes the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and photofunctionalization (PF) at a tertiary care dental hospital. In the current clinical trial, 30 subjects were grouped equally to receive immediate dental implants, with one group in which pretreatment of the extraction site was done with the auto-PRP and PF, while the control group received no pretreatment. For 12 months after the placement of the implant, the subjects were observed for alterations in the parameters. The variables analyzed were survival, esthetics, biological integration, and finally the success of the implants in each group. Values were noted and compared using the appropriate statistical tools, while keeping the level of significance at P < 0.05. For the variables of esthetics and survival, no substantial differences were observed in the PRP and PF groups. There was no difference between these experimental groups and the control group. However, there were significant differences for the biological variable as there was more marginal bone loss in the experimental groups. On the whole, the success was greater for the experimental groups than the control group, though not significant. The pretreatment protocols using PRP and PF have shown to improve some characteristics of the immediate implants in the anterior regions. However, further studies are suggested.

INTRODUCTION: In esthetic surgery, the use of silicone implants is a topic of hot discussion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An analysis of 119 esthetic surgical interventions on the mammary gland was performed. A study of the immune and endocrine parameters after mammoplasty was carried out. RESULTS: The phenomenon of an increase in the levels of autoantibodies to the TSH receptor was revealed. The phenomenon of pre-operative growth of prolactin and TSH levels has been confirmed. An increase in thyroid autoimmunity after silicone mammoplasty is interpreted as a result of a silicone adjuvant action. An increase in the incidence of ASIA syndrome in patients who underwent breast surgery was registered. However, it was observed in both patients with silicone and non-silicone breast surgeries and therefore could not be solely explained by the use of silicone. Within 12 months following silicone mammoplasty, the patients with an increase of anti-TSH receptor autoimmunity nevertheless did not show any clinical and laboratory signs of overt thyroid disease, thus staying in a pre-nosological state. PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Based on these results, we recommend the following for esthetic surgery: (a) all patients planned for silicone implant surgery should be examined for autoantibodies to the TSH receptor and (b) patients who have undergone breast endoprosthesis, starting 6 months after the operation, need long-term follow-up for thyroid status with mandatory testing for the level of these autoantibodies.

This prospective cohort study aimed to assess long-term safety, dental implant survival, and clinical and radiological outcomes after maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE; lateral window technique) using freshly isolated autologous stromal vascular fraction (SVF) combined with calcium phosphate ceramics. All 10 patients previously participating in a phase I trial were included in a 10-year follow-up. They received either ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP; n = 5) or biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP; n = 5) with SVF-supplementation on one side (study). Bilaterally treated patients (6 of 10; 3 ß-TCP, 3 BCP) received only calcium phosphate on the opposite side (control). Clinical and radiological assessments were performed on 44 dental implants at 1-month pre-MSFE, and 0.5- to 10-year post-MSFE. Implants were placed 6 months post-MSFE. No adverse events or pathology was reported during a 10-year follow-up. Forty-three dental implants (98%) remained functional. Control and study sides showed similar peri-implant soft-tissue quality, sulcus bleeding index, probing depth, plaque index, keratinized mucosa width, as well as marginal bone loss (0-6 mm), graft height loss (0-6 mm), and graft volume reduction. Peri-implantitis was observed around 6 implants (control: 4; study: 2) in 3 patients. This study is the first to demonstrate the 10-year safety of SVF-supplementation in MSFE for jawbone reconstruction. SVF-supplementation showed enhanced bone regeneration in the short term (previous study) and led to no abnormalities clinically and radiologically in the long term.

Direct deposition of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) on silicon-based complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) chips has enabled self-emissive microdisplays with high resolution and fill-factor. Emerging applications of OLEDs in augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) displays and in biomedical applications, e.g., as brain implants for cell-specific light delivery in optogenetics, require light intensities orders of magnitude above those found in traditional displays. Further requirements often include a microscopic device footprint, a specific shape and ultrastable passivation, e.g., to ensure biocompatibility and minimal invasiveness of OLED-based implants. In this work, up to 1024 ultrabright, microscopic OLEDs are deposited directly on needle-shaped CMOS chips. Transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy are performed on the foundry-provided aluminum contact pads of the CMOS chips to guide a systematic optimization of the contacts. Plasma treatment and implementation of silver interlayers lead to ohmic contact conditions and thus facilitate direct vacuum deposition of orange- and blue-emitting OLED stacks leading to micrometer-sized pixels on the chips. The electronics in each needle allow each pixel to switch individually. The OLED pixels generate a mean optical power density of 0.25 mW mm-2 , corresponding to >40 000 cd m-2 , well above the requirement for daylight AR applications and optogenetic single-unit activation in the brain.

BACKGROUND: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a viable non-invasive technique for functional neuroimaging in the cochlear implant (CI) population; however, the effects of acoustic stimulus features on the fNIRS signal have not been thoroughly examined. This study examined the effect of stimulus level on fNIRS responses in adults with normal hearing or bilateral CIs. We hypothesized that fNIRS responses would correlate with both stimulus level and subjective loudness ratings, but that the correlation would be weaker with CIs due to the compression of acoustic input to electric output. METHODS: Thirteen adults with bilateral CIs and 16 with normal hearing (NH) completed the study. Signal-correlated noise, a speech-shaped noise modulated by the temporal envelope of speech stimuli, was used to determine the effect of stimulus level in an unintelligible speech-like stimulus between the range of soft to loud speech. Cortical activity in the left hemisphere was recorded. RESULTS: Results indicated a positive correlation of cortical activation in the left superior temporal gyrus with stimulus level in both NH and CI listeners with an additional correlation between cortical activity and perceived loudness for the CI group. The results are consistent with the literature and our hypothesis. CONCLUSIONS: These results support the potential of fNIRS to examine auditory stimulus level effects at a group level and the importance of controlling for stimulus level and loudness in speech recognition studies. Further research is needed to better understand cortical activation patterns for speech recognition as a function of both stimulus presentation level and perceived loudness.

INTRODUCTION: Capsular contracture remains the most common complication following device-based breast reconstruction, occurring in up to 50% of women who also undergo adjuvant radiotherapy either before or after device-based reconstruction. While certain risk factors for capsular contracture have been identified, there remains no clinically effective method of prevention. The purpose of the present study is to determine the effect of coating the implant with the novel small molecule Met-Z2-Y12, with and without delayed, targeted radiotherapy, on capsule thickness and morphologic change around smooth silicone implants placed under the latissimus dorsi in a rodent model. METHODS: Twenty-four female Sprague Dawley rats each had 2 mL smooth round silicone breast implants implanted bilaterally under the latissimus dorsi muscle. Twelve received uncoated implants and twelve received implants coated with Met-Z2-Y12. Half of the animals from each group received targeted radiotherapy (20 Gray) on postoperative day ten. At three and 6 months after implantation, the tissue surrounding the implants was harvested for analysis of capsular histology including capsule thickness. Additionally, microCT scans were qualitatively analyzed for morphologic change. RESULTS: Capsules surrounding Met-Z2-Y12-coated implants were significantly thinner (P = 0.006). The greatest difference in capsule thickness was seen in the irradiated 6-month groups, where mean capsule thickness was 79.1 ± 27.3 µm for uncoated versus 50.9 ± 9.6 µm for Met-Z2-Y12-coated implants (P = 0.038). At the time of explant, there were no capsular morphologic differences between the groups either grossly or per microCT. CONCLUSIONS: Met-Z2-Y12 coating of smooth silicone breast implants significantly reduces capsule thickness in a rodent model of submuscular breast reconstruction with delayed radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: The aim of this systematic review was to compare treatment outcomes in terms of implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) between narrow-diameter implants and regular-diameter implants (RDIs) for mandibular implant overdentures (MIOs). METHODS: This study was based on the methodology adapted as per Cochrane. Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for pertinent studies published by July 22, 2022. Outcome parameters included in this meta-analysis were implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, visual analogue scale score for patient satisfaction, and value of oral health impact profile. RESULTS: A total of 782 non-duplicate articles and 83 clinical study registrations were identified from database and hand searches, of which 26 were eligible for full-text searches. Finally, 12 publications reporting on 8 independent studies were included in this review. In the meta-analysis, implant survival rate and marginal bone loss did not significantly differ between narrow-diameter implants and RDIs. Regarding RDIs, narrow-diameter implants were associated with significantly better outcomes in general patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life than RDIs for mandibular overdentures. CONCLUSIONS: Narrow-diameter implants have competitive treatment outcomes compared to RDIs in terms of implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, and PROMs. [Correction added on July 21, 2023, after first online publication: The abbreviation RDIs was changed to PROMs in the preceding sentence.] Thus, narrow-diameter implants might be an alternative treatment option for MIOs in situations with limited alveolar bone volume.

Health specialists currently suggest low-cholesterol diets, suggesting that cholesterol in the form of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) reduces the risk of chronic atherosclerosis. The large volume of literature describes the biological roles of vitamin E and its application to preventing disease and improving the health and productive performances of farm animals. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of vitamin E (Alpha-tocopherol acetate) supplementation and melatonin implants on biochemical blood, lipid profile and muscle vitamin E content of Awassi male lambs fed by a high and normal diet in Iraq. The lambs were divided into teen groups as control normal energy diet T1 (NED) T2 (HED) concentrated lamb fattening feed. Two levels of melatonin (18 and 36 mg implant) were applied to T3, T4, T5, and T6 treatment and 2 levels of Vitamin E (Alpha-tocopherol acetate) diet 200 mg/kg, 400 mg/kg to T7. T8. T9 and T10, respectively. Results from the present study indicate that Vitamin E 200, 400 mg/lamb/day and melatonin implantation 18 mg, 36 mg/lamb/day significantly (P<0.05) increased total protein in serum while decreasing globulin level, glucose concentration in serum, melatonin implantation 36 mg/lamb and vitamin E 400 mg/lamb/day recorded significantly (P<0.05). The same effect on decreasing cholesterol concentration in serum 42.6mg\dl, 40.5 mg\dl, respectively, compared to non-treated groups. Vitamin E 200 mg/kg/lamb recorded the lowest AST level in serum, 43.3. Lambs implanted with Melatonin 36 mg/lamb and fed a high-energy diet (T8) resulted in a significant decrease of serum ALT activity (P<0.05) in comparison to other treated groups 12.7 U/L was achieved. Lambs fed a normal energy diet with vitamin E 200 mg/kg/lamb (T4) exceeded other treated groups, decreasing ALT serum levels by 9.35 U/L. Interestingly, muscle vitamin E concentrations for lambs received 200, 400 mg/lamb/day on the 2nd, 7th and 14th days of the storage period, and fed high energy diet (T10) or normal energy diet (T5) were significantly higher compared to control group (T1, T6).

This study utilized directed energy deposition (DED) as a metal additive manufacturing (AM) technique to create ceramic-reinforced composites of Ti6Al4V (Ti64) with hydroxyapatite (HA), alumina (Al2O3), and silicon nitride (Si3N4). The resulting composites had tailored microstructures designed to improve bio-tribological and antibacterial properties simultaneously. A total of 5-wt % ceramic reinforcement were used in Ti64 in four different composites - (1) only Si3N4 (5S), (2) only Al2O3 (5A), (3) 3 wt % Si3N4 and 2 wt% HA (32SH) and (4) 3 wt % Al2O3 and 2 wt% HA (32AH). Microstructural observations revealed that martensite transformation between α and ß-Ti in composites resulted in compressive residual stress at the matrix. Coherency is observed between the ceramic particles and Ti64 matrix, preventing cracking, debonding, or porosity. Vicker's hardness of the composite samples increases by 50% over the Ti64 matrix. Various strengthening mechanisms are discussed in detail, representing the reason behind the reduction of compound wear in 5S and 5A composites. Si3N4-added composites demonstrated an antibacterial response against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. The multifunctional performance of ceramic-reinforced Ti64 composites makes them suitable for articulating biomedical devices such as femoral heads in hip implants.

INTRODUCTION: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) encompasses all forms of unaided and aided modes of communication, but typically excludes codified language such as spoken words or American Sign Language (ASL). In pediatric patients with a documented additional disability (population of interest), deficits in communication may pose a barrier to language development. While forms of AAC are frequently mentioned in the literature, recent innovations have permitted the use of high-tech AAC in the rehabilitation process. Our objective was to review the implementation of AAC in pediatric cochlear implant recipients with a documented additional disability. METHODS: A scoping review of existing literature examining the use of AAC in pediatric CI recipients was conducted in the PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase databases. Studies with pediatric cochlear implant recipients with a concomitant diagnosis requiring additional therapeutic intervention outside the scope of standard post-CI follow-up care and rehabilitation from 1985 to 2021 met inclusion criteria (population of interest). Studies limited to spoken or formal sign language (e.g., American Sign Language, ASL) as communication modalities were excluded. RESULTS: Four hundred twenty studies were screened of which 29 were included. 13 were prospective, 10 were retrospective, 1 was cross-sectional, and 5 were case reports. Of these 29 studies, 378 patients met the inclusion criteria (age <18, CI user, additional disability, utilized AAC). Fewer studies (n = 7) utilized AAC as the primary intervention for investigation. Autism spectrum disorder, learning disorder, and cognitive delay were frequently mentioned as additional disabilities in conjunction with AAC. Unaided forms of AAC included gesture/behavior, informal sign, and signed exact English, while aided AAC included a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCA), and touchscreen programs such as TouchChat® HD. Various audiometric and language development outcome measures were mentioned, most commonly the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) (n = 4) and the Preschool Language Scale, Fourth Edition (PLS-4) (n = 4). CONCLUSION: There is a gap in the literature regarding the use of aided and high-tech AAC in pediatric CI users with a documented additional disability. Given the use of multiple different outcome measures, additional exploration of the intervention of AAC is warranted.

Bacteria Acinetobacter baumannii is a persistent issue in hospital-acquired infections due to its fast and potent development of multi-drug resistance. To address this urgent challenge, a novel biomaterial using silver (Ag+) ions within the hydroxyapatite (HAp) lattice has been developed to prevent infections in orthopedic surgery and bone regeneration applications without relying on antibiotics. The aim of the study was to examine the antibacterial activity of mono-substituted HAp with Ag+ ions and a mixture of mono-substituted HAps with Sr2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, SeO32- and Ag+ ions against the A. baumannii. The samples were prepared in the form of powder and disc and analyzed by disc diffusion, broth microdilution method, and scanning electron microscopy. The results from the disc-diffusion method have shown a strong antibacterial efficacy of the Ag-substituted and mixture of mono-substituted HAps (Sr, Zn, Se, Mg, Ag) toward several clinical isolates. The Minimal Inhibitory Concentrations for the powdered HAp samples ranged from 32 to 42 mg/L (Ag+ substituted) and 83-167 mg/L (mixture of mono-substituted), while the Minimal Bactericidal Concentrations after 24 h of contact ranged from 62.5 (Ag+) to 187.5-292 mg/L (ion mixture). The lower substitution level of Ag+ ions in a mixture of mono-substituted HAps was the cause of lower antibacterial effects measured in suspension. However, the inhibition zones and bacterial adhesion on the biomaterial surface were comparable. Overall, the clinical isolates of A. baumannii were effectively inhibited by substituted HAp samples, probably in the same amount as by other commercially available silver-doped materials, and such materials may provide a promising alternative or supplementation to antibiotic treatment in the prevention of infections associated with bone regeneration. The antibacterial activity of prepared samples toward A. baumannii was time-dependent and should be considered in potential applications.

Adjuvant-induced autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome leads to capsular contracture and fibrosis from the oxidation that takes place in silicone. Anaplastic large cell lymphoma occurs through the development of a seroma, with the formation of a periprosthetic effusion, or through the infiltration of the condition itself. To analyze these conditions, a review of the literature was carried out on the symptoms and pathophysiology of the autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma, searched using the terms "ASIA breast silicone," "Lymphoma," "Adjuvants" "Immunologic" " Breast Implants" on the PubMed platform. Analyzing the data obtained, it was noted that the symptoms of the autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants are nonspecific, such as fatigue, myalgia, arthralgia, morning stiffness, and night sweats, and therefore need attention. Anaplastic large cell lymphoma presents with breast pain, periprosthetic effusion, and palpable mass, among other characteristics. Because of these aspects, it is concluded that a good investigation should be carried out when nonspecific symptoms appear, regardless of the time the surgery was performed since these complications can occur years later.


A síndrome autoimune/inflamatória induzida por adjuvantes leva à contratura capsular e fibrose pela oxidação que acontece no silicone. O linfoma anaplásico de grandes células ocorre através do desenvolvimento de um seroma, com a formação de derrame periprotético ou por uma infiltração da própria afecção. Para análise destes acometimentos, foi realizada uma revisão da literatura acerca da sintomatologia e fisiopatologia da síndrome autoimune/inflamatória induzida por adjuvantes e linfoma anaplásico de grandes células, pesquisada através dos termos "ASIA breast silicone" "Lymphoma" "Adjuvants" "Immunologic" "Breast Implants" na plataforma PubMed. Analisando os dados obtidos, notou-se que os sintomas da síndrome autoimune/inflamatória induzida por adjuvantes são inespecíficos, como fadiga, mialgia, artralgia, rigidez matinal e suores noturnos, e, portanto, necessitam de atenção. Já o linfoma anaplásico de grandes células se apresenta com dor mamária, derrame periprotético, massa palpável, dentre outras características. Em vista destes aspectos, conclui-se que uma boa investigação deve ser realizada ao surgirem sintomas inespecíficos, independentemente do tempo que a cirurgia foi realizada, uma vez que estas complicações podem ocorrer anos após a cirurgia.

Background: Implants are preferred for replacement of missing teeth by the clinicians as well as the patients. Lesser alveolar bone density doesn't preclude any individual for choosing this option but warrants for extra caution. Preclinical studies have explored the osteoinductive potential of statins, but results should be analyzed vigorously before implementing them in humans. There is no meta-analysis to document effect of statins on bone formation around implants in osteoporotic animals. Methods and material: PubMed, Embase and Cochrane were searched for studies investigating the effect of statins on bone implant contact (BIC %), bone mineral density (BMD %) and bone volume (BV %) around implants at 2, 4 and 12 weeks. Meta-analysis was performed on subgroups with osteoporotic animals which were administered statins through different routes. Results: Quantitative data from 12 studies showed favorable effect of statins on bone around implants. Positive difference was observed at 4 weeks in BIC (parenteral [SMD = 4.33 (2.89, 5.77); I 2 = 3%)], BMD (local [SMD = 1.33 (0.51, 2.15); I 2 = 0%] and BV (local [SMD = 1.58 (0.76, 2.40); I 2 = 0%]. BIC [SMD = 1.40 (0.89, 1.90); I 2 = 0%] and BV [SMD = 3.91 (2.33, 5.50); I 2 = 43%] were higher in experimental group after 12 weeks of oral administration. Conclusions: Statins can be investigated as potential bone graft materials to increase the predictability of osseointegration especially in osteoporotic individuals. Future research should focus to reproduce homogeneous data and conclusive recommendations which can be applied in clinical trials.
