RESUMEN

Magnetic phosphorous biochar (MPBC) was prepared from Camellia oleifera shells using phosphoric acid activation and iron co-deposition. The materials were characterized and analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), specific surface area and pore size analysis (BET), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). MPBC had a high surface area (1 139.28 m2·g-1) and abundant surface functional groups, and it could achieve fast solid-liquid separation under the action of an external magnetic field. The adsorption behavior and influencing factors of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in water were investigated. The adsorbent showed excellent adsorption properties for SMX under acidic and neutral conditions, and alkaline conditions and the presence of CO32- had obvious inhibition on adsorption. The adsorption process conformed to the quasi-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. The adsorption rate was fast, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 356.49 mg·g-1. The adsorption process was a spontaneous exothermic reaction, and low temperature was beneficial to the adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was mainly the chemisorption of pyrophosphate surface functional groups (C-O-P bond) between the SMX molecule and MPBC and also included hydrogen bonding, π-π electron donor-acceptor (π-πEDA) interaction, and a pore filling effect. The development of MPBC adsorbent provides an effective way for resource utilization of waste Camellia oleifera shells and treatment of sulfamethoxazole wastewater.

RESUMEN

The mutual coupling of spin and lattice degrees of freedom is ubiquitous in magnetic materials and potentially creates exotic magnetic states in response to the external magnetic field. Particularly, geometrically frustrated magnets serve as a fertile playground for realizing magnetic superstructure phases. Here, we observe an unconventional two-step magnetostructural transition prior to a half-magnetization plateau in a breathing pyrochlore chromium spinel by means of state-of-the-art magnetization and magnetostriction measurements in ultrahigh magnetic fields available up to 600 T. Considering a microscopic magnetoelastic theory, the intermediate-field phase can be assigned to a magnetic superstructure with a three-dimensional periodic array of 3-up-1-down and canted 2-up-2-down spin molecules. We attribute the emergence of the magnetic superstructure to a unique combination of the strong spin-lattice coupling and large breathing anisotropy.

RESUMEN

Objective: Magnetism has been known for >4,000 years. Recently static multipolar magnets have demonstrated analgesic clinical usefulness. Local application of magnets may be beneficial in reducing musculoskeletal pain, particularly when other modalities have failed. A recent series of clinical cases demonstrates how multipolar magnets may be incorporated as an effective adjunctive treatment in an acupuncture clinic. Materials and Methods: PubMed database was searched using the key words: magnets, medical magnets, magnets and pain management, therapeutic magnets, multipolar magnets, and history of magnet therapy. In addition, clinical cases were submitted by 4 different medical acupuncturists as examples of how the use of multipolar magnets is incorporated into an acupuncture clinic. Results: Over the past 20 years, 143 articles fulfilled the search criteria and unfortunately demonstrated considerable variability in research methodology. Magnetic tapes, needles, and beads of various magnetic strengths constituted the stimulating apparatus with durations ranging from minutes to years. This article highlights 10 cases, 9 of which reflected situations in which the use of 1 or more multipolar magnets provided an enhanced analgesic effect, often when traditional acupuncture had either failed to produce a satisfactory response or when the application of acupuncture needles needed to be limited. Conclusion: Despite the variability of the literature review, it appears that magnetism is related to pain reduction, and when properly employed, it can be an effective and safe modality as demonstrated by a recent series of cases submitted from the practices of 4 different medical acupuncturists. A clinical trial incorporating the latest technology of multipolar magnets with steep field gradients should be initiated for the more formal investigation of magnet-induced analgesia.

RESUMEN

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a powerful mycotoxin present in a variety of food products, and its detection is important for human health. Here, a fluorescent aptasensor is reported for sensitive OTA determination. Specifically, the surface of bio-inspired passion fruit-like dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres-enriched quantum dots (MSNQs-apt) was first modified with the OTA aptamer as the recognition unit and fluorescence emitter, while the aptamer-complementary DNA (MNPs-cDNA) was linked with the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as the separation element. In the range of 2.56 pg/mL to 8 ng/mL, the proposed aptasensor exhibited satisfactory linearity and a detection limit of 1.402 pg/mL. The developed aptasensor achieved recoveries of 90.98-103.20% and 94.33-107.57 % in red wine and wheat flour samples, respectively. By simply replacing the aptamer, this aptasensor can be easily extended to detection of other analytes, suggesting its potential as a universal detection platform for mycotoxins in food products.

RESUMEN

Magnetic field (MF) effects have been reported in plants' growth, seed germination, gene expression, and water consumption. Accordingly, magnetic treatments have been proposed as a sustainable alternative to improve yields. Nevertheless, a comprehensive quantitative assessment is needed to understand whether their effects are general, species-specific, or dependent on the experimental setting. We conducted a multilevel meta-analysis of 45 articles that studied 29 different plant species. A positive and neutral effect of a nonuniform MF was found on fresh weight and germination rate, respectively. A significant association was found between a uniform MF and germination. These results suggest that MFs improve plant growth. However, the effects are highly dependent on the experimental setting. This opens exciting questions about the biophysical mechanisms underlying the perception and transduction of this environmental cue and about the possible translation to agricultural practices. © 2023 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

RESUMEN

Medicinal plants are important sources of biochemical compounds affecting human health. However, because large areas of the world are subjected to different stresses including salinity, it is important to find methods, which may control the growth and biochemical properties of medicinal plants in such conditions. Another aspect of cropping medicinal plants in saline soils is the alteration of their biochemical properties by stress. Due to the significance of planting medicinal plants in saline soils, the objective of the present review article is to investigate and analyze the physicochemical approaches including soil leaching, organic fertilization, mineral nutrition, ozonated water, magnetism, superabsorbent polymers, and zeolite, which may control the effects of salinity stress on the growth and biochemical properties (production of secondary metabolites) of medicinal plants. In our just-published review article, we investigated the biological approaches, which may affect the growth and biochemical properties of medicinal properties in saline soils. Although salinity stress may induce the production of biochemical products in medicinal plants, the use of physicochemical approaches is also recommendable for the improved growth and biochemical properties of medicinal plants in saline soils. More has yet to be indicated on the use of the physicochemical approaches, which may affect the growth and biochemical properties of medicinal plants in salt stress conditions. KEY POINTS: • Growth and physiological alteration of medicinal plants in salt stress conditions. • The physicochemical approaches of such alteration have been reviewed. • More has yet to be indicated on the approaches, which may affect such properties.

RESUMEN

The improvement of the growth and quality of medicinal plants under stress is of significance, worldwide. The hypothesis was to alleviate salinity stress in Mentha piperita by enhancing nutrient uptake using magnetically treated water, which to our knowledge has not been previously investigated. The objective was to test the effects of magnetized water (using alternating magnetic fields) (main plots, M1-M4 representing control, 100, 200, and 300 mT, respectively), salinity (subplots, S1-S4 representing control, 40, 80, and 120 mM NaCl, respectively), and growth medium (sub-subplots, X1-X4 representing coco peat, palm, coco peat + perlite, and palm + perlite, respectively) on M. piperita nutrient uptake in the greenhouse. The M treatments, especially the 100 and 200 mT levels, significantly increased plant N (1.08%, S3M4X1), P (0.89%, S3M3X1), K (3.23%, S3M3X1), Ca (53.6 mg/kg, S4M4X4), and Mg (39.63 mg/kg, S3M3X2) concentrations (compared with control at 0.71, 0.49, 2.4, 26.63, 1.63) even at the highest level of salinity. Magnetically treated water also significantly enhanced plant Fe and Zn concentration to a maximum of 750 µg/kg (M4S3X1) and 94.67 µg/kg (S4M4X3), under salinity stress, respectively. The single and the combined use of organic and mineral media significantly affected plant nutrient uptake, especially when used with the proper rate of M treatment. If combined with the proper growth medium, the magnetized water may be more effective on the alleviation of salt stress in Mentha piperita by enhancing nutrient uptake.

RESUMEN

Combined with the material characteristics of acupuncture needle, new connection technology and injection moulding technology, and through mechanical test, a new type of magnetic joint for electroacupuncture instrument, with regular appearance and simple manufacturing process, is developed, which can be connected with acupuncture needle in close range. This joint is composed of the inner magnet joint and the outer joint protective sleeve. The new conductive adhesive is used to simplify the manufacturing process. Its advantages include connection with acupuncture needle by magnetic force, being convenient to store when idle and easy to switch to the working state, and quick disconnection in case of emergency. This joint is connected safely and firmly with acupuncture needle by magnetic force, which shortens the operation time, improves the working efficiency, and effectively solves the problems existing in the crocodile clip connector.

RESUMEN

To benefit from the diverse functionalities of perovskite oxides in silicon-based complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, integrating oxides into a silicon platform has become one of the major tasks for oxide research. Using the deposition of LaMnO3/SrTiO3 (STO) superlattices (SLs) as a case study, we demonstrate that (001) single oriented oxide SLs can be integrated on Si using various template techniques, including a single-layer buffer of STO prepared by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and pulsed laser deposition, a multilayer buffer of Y-stabilized zirconia/CeO2/LaNiO3/STO, and STO-coated two-dimensional nanosheets of Ca2Nb3O10 (CNO) and reduced graphene oxide. The textured SL grown on STO-coated CNO nanosheets shows the highest crystallinity, owing to the small lattice mismatch between CNO and STO as well as less clamping from a Si substrate. The epitaxial SL grown on STO buffer prepared by MBE suffers the largest thermal strain, giving rise to a strongly suppressed saturation magnetization but an enhanced coercive field, as compared to the reference SL grown on an STO single crystal. These optional template techniques used for integrating oxides on Si are of significance to fulfill practical applications of oxide films in different fields.

Abstract In mid-nineteenth century Portugal, alternative and complementary medical systems and medicine were discussed with relative intensity in the specialized press and in some mainstream newspapers. One of these medical systems, which gained ground during Portugal's romantic era, seems to have sparked particular debate: animal magnetism. A comparative approach is taken to review the historical scope of this healing system, analyzing popular and specialized curiosity regarding this therapy. Finally, the literary and institutional disagreements that animal magnetism unleashed during the period are contextualized.

RESUMEN

The aim of the study was to evaluate if gold-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (AuSPION) magnetic-targeted to the arthritic articulation of collagen induced arthritis (CIA) rats are able to ameliorate rheumatoid arthritis without producing significant biological adverse effects in comparison to colloidal Au nanoparticles (AuC) and metotrexate (MTX). Male Wistar rats were divided into control; arthritic; AuSPION (150 µg kg-1); AuC (150 µg kg-1) and MTX (2.5 µg kg-1). Treatments were administered thrice every other day by the intraperitoneal route 15 min after all groups had a neodymium magnet coupled to the right ankle joint (kept for 1 h). Paw edema and body weight were measured weekly. Joint sections were evaluated by Haematoxylin & Eosin and immunohistochemistry (TNF-α, IL-1ß). Biomarkers of oxidative stress were used to evaluate toxicity. Among the evaluated treatments, AuSPION led to significant clinical improvements (decreased edema and infiltration by leukocytes as well as less positively immunostained cells for both TNF-α and IL-1ß in synovium) accompanied by a lack of toxicity as indicated by redox state and genotoxicity assays. Our results clearly indicate that the magnetic targeting of AuSPION suppresses joint edema and inflammation, cytokine expression as well as the redox imbalance, thereby contributing to an amelioration of arthritis severity in CIA rats. The results demonstrate for the first time the potentiality of AuSPION administration under a magnetic field as an attractive alternative for future treatments of rheumatic diseases.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use increases in cancer patients, including adult patients with diffuse gliomas. METHODS: Questionnaires addressing CAM use were distributed to adult patients with gliomas of WHO grades II-IV and ECOG performance score of 0-2 during hospital visits and filled in anonymously. The study was conducted in nine centers in France from May 2017 to May 2018. Descriptive cohort analyses and comparative analyses according to gender, age, WHO grade, and recurrent versus newly diagnosed disease were conducted. RESULTS: Two hundred twenty-seven questionnaires were collected; 135 patients (59%) were male. Median age was 48 years, 105 patients (46%) declared having glioblastoma, 99 patients (43%) declared having recurrent disease. Hundred-three patients (45%) had modified their alimentary habits after the glioma diagnosis. At the time of the questionnaire, 100 patients (44%) were on complementary treatment, mainly vitamins and food supplements, and 73 patients (32%) used alternative medicine approaches, mainly magnetism and acupuncture. In total, 154 patients (68%) declared using at least one of these approaches. Expenditures exceeding 100 € per month were reported by users in 14% for modification of alimentary habits, in 25% for complementary treatment, and in 18% for alternative medicines. All approaches were commonly considered as improving quality of life and experienced as efficient, notably those associated with more expenditures. CONCLUSIONS: CAM are frequently used by glioma patients in France. Underlying needs and expectations, as well as potential interactions with tumor-specific treatments, and financial and quality of life burden, should be discussed with patients and caregivers.

RESUMEN

Four cyanide-bridged FeIII-MnIII complexes {[Fe(qxcq)(CN)3][Mn(L1)(H2O)]}[Mn(L1)(H2O)(CH3OH)](ClO4)·1.5MeOH·0.5H2O (L1 = N,N'-bis(3-methoxy-5-bromosalicylideneiminate) (2), {[Fe(qxcq)(CN)3][Mn(L2)]}2·0.5H2O (L2 = N,N'-ethylene-bis(3-ethoxysalicylideneiminate)) (3), [Fe(qxcq)(CN)3][Mn(L3)] (L3 = bis(acetylacetonato)ethylenediimine) (4), [Fe(qxcq)(CN)3][Mn(L4)]·1.5MeOH·0.5CH3CN·0.25H2O (L4 = N,N'-(1,1,2,2-tetramethylethylene)bis(salicylideneiminate)) (5), were prepared by assembling a new structurally characterized mer-tricyanoiron(III) molecular precursor (Ph4P)[Fe(qxcq)(CN)3]·0.5H2O (qxcq- = 8-(2-quinoxaline-2-carboxamido)quinoline anion) (1) and the corresponding manganese(III) Schiff base compound. Complexes 2and 3containa cyanide-bridged heterobimetallic dinuclear entity, which can be further dimerized by self-complementary H-bond interactions through the coordinated water molecule from one complex and the free O4unit from the adjacent complex. Complexes 4 and 5 area one-dimensional coordination polymer (CP) comprised of the repeated [Mn(Schiffbase)-Fe(qxcq)(CN)3] units. Complex 4 shows a linear-chain conformation with two trans-located cyano groups bridgingthe neighboring Mn units, while complex 5 is a zigzag-like 1D CP, where the two cyano groups in cis configurationfunction as bridges. In bothcomplexes 4 and 5, the inter-chain π-πstack interactions within the aromaticrings of cyanide precursor extend the 1D chain into the supermolecular 2D networks. The magnetic property has been experimentally studied and theoretically fitted over the four Fe(III)-Mn(III) complexes, revealing the antiferromagnetic interaction in complexes 2 and 4 and the unusual ferromagnetic coupling in complexes 3 and 5 between the Fe(III) ion and the Mn(III) ion bridged by the cyano group. Furthermore, the different magnetic coupling nature has been analyzed on the basis of the magneto-structure correlation of the mer-tricyanometallate-based Fe(III)-Mn(III) magnetic system.

RESUMEN

In the mesmeric movement, one of the phenomena cited to defend the existence of magnetic and nervous forces was the visual perception of them in the form of luminous emanations from people, or effluvia. This Classic Text is an 1892 article by French neurologist, Jules Bernard Luys (1828-97), about the observation of such effluvia by hypnotized individuals. Interestingly, the luminous phenomena perceived from mentally diseased individuals and from healthy ones had particular properties. Luys's interest in this and other unorthodox phenomena were consistent with ideas of animal magnetism in the late neo-mesmeric movement, as well as with some physicalistic conceptions of hypnosis and the nervous system held at the time.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tamra Bhasma is derived from metallic copper that is recommended for different ailments of liver and spleen, dropsy, abdominal pain, heart disease, colitis, tumors, anemia, loss of appetite, tuberculosis, as well as eye problems. OBJECTIVES: The knowledge of crystallite size and active ingredients in Bhasma materials is limited restricting its use as nanomedicine in the modern era. Also, the 2015 Nobel prize in medicine has motivated many researchers towards traditional medicines. Therefore, the different chemical and physical properties of prepared Tamra Bhasma has been studied by modern experimental tools (XRD, VSM, SEM, FTIR and PL spectrometer) and the preliminary testing of Tamra Bhasma nanoparticles was examined on bacteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bhasma is prepared by metals and minerals using three step procedures e.g. Shodhana, Bhavana and Marana. In the present work, for the preparation of Tamra Bhasma, pulverized copper wire was used and prepared by the principle of Puta (incineration) in an Electrical Muffle Furnace (EMF). RESULTS: X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy results revealed that the crystallite size of Bhasma powder was less than 100 nm and nanocrystallites of aglomerated size in micrometer. Magnetometer measurement supports its medicinal value. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of nanocrystalline Bhasma powder was investigated in UV-NIR region and shows luminescence in visible region. The antimicrobial study of Tamra Bhasma shows effectiveness on bacteria and, may be useful to control the bacterial infection disease. CONCLUSION: Scientific data obtained using modern scientific tools and evidence would support in utilizing the ancient Indian wisdom of Ayurveda for the development of newer drugs as a modern nanomedicine and in other possible technological applications.

The aim of this paper is to analyze a remarkable character of Buenos Aires cultural and scientific scenario during the end of the century, the producer of the Revista Magnetológica (Magazine of magnetism) Ovidio Rebaudi (1860-1931), a well-known chemist and follower of magnetism and spiritualism. The life and work of this chemist, native of Paraguay and resident of Argentina, seem useful to understand how scientific actors held and protect hypnotic and magnetic practices. In fact, Rebaudi dedicated a great part of his life to the study and conceptualization of supernatural phenomena, performing magnetic healings and diverse spiritualist experiments, enduing their practices with scientific attributes. This paper intends to analyze this end-of-the-century character, who pleaded for scientific practices on the one hand, and for supernatural studies on the other. We understand that this analysis could enlighten some mixture zones and interweaved soils between the scientific and the magnetic grounds.

RESUMEN

Magnetite in mixture with metallic iron in indoor dust samples was examined using several magnetic analyses, thermomagnetic curves of the magnetic susceptibility and the induced magnetization vs. temperature, hysteresis loops, and first-order reversal curves. The study of the magnetic properties was supplemented by the analysis of chemical elements and electron microscopic observation. The metallic iron in the mixture affects the values of hysteresis parameters, decreasing coercivity (Bc) and increasing saturation magnetization (Ms), and it is responsible for the magnetic enhancement of magnetic susceptibility. The thermomagnetic curves show several distinct features: the first Curie temperature of magnetite, the second one (∼764 °C) of iron, and the rapid decrease on the heating curves (between 600 and 750 °C) caused by the oxidation of iron to magnetite. Two magnetochemical processes appear during the thermal treatment of indoor dust: the oxidation of iron to magnetite and the neo-formation of magnetite as a result of chemical transformation of non-magnetic minerals. The shift of the hysteresis parameter ratios from the multi-domain (MD) region towards the single-domain (SD) region on the Day-Dunlop plot is controlled by the oxidation of iron in the thermally induced process and the grain size of the new formed magnetite. The magnetic properties of indoor dust are a potential indicator of indoor air pollution. Elemental iron plays an important role in the development of inflammation in humans via oxidative stress, so that the presence of metallic Fe in indoor dust can affect human health.

The aim of this article is to analyze a source that has not been deeply studied yet: the Magnetologic Magazine (Revista Magnetológica)published by a society mainly composed of adherents of spiritualism and theosophy in Buenos Aires. The content of the magazine offers valuable evidence about the way in which social actors -who were foreign to the medical traditional field- theoretically and practically approached hypnosis and magnetism at the end of the century. In fact, magnetists from Buenos Aires not only developed complex conceptualizations of these phenomena, but also implemented magnetic cures which details were spread throughout the pages of the magazine. Our task is to analyze some specific aspects of this publication: on the one hand, how the magnetists were placed in relation to the doctors of the city, and on the other, their strategies of self-legitimation.

RESUMEN

Suggestion in hypnosis has been applied to the treatment of functional neurologic symptoms since the earliest descriptions of hypnosis in the 19th century. Suggestion in this sense refers to an intentional communication of beliefs or ideas, whether verbally or nonverbally, to produce subjectively convincing changes in experience and behavior. The recognition of suggestion as a psychologic process with therapeutic applications was closely linked to the derivation of hypnosis from earlier healing practices. Animal magnetism, the immediate precursor of hypnosis, arrived at a psychologic concept of suggestion along with other ideas and practices which were then incorporated into hypnosis. Before then, other forms of magnetism and ritual healing practices such as exorcism involved unintentionally suggestive verbal and nonverbal stimuli. We consider the derivation of hypnosis from these practices not only to illustrate the range of suggestive processes, but also the consistency with which suggestion has been applied to the production and removal of dissociative and functional neurologic symptoms over many centuries. Nineteenth-century practitioners treated functional symptoms with induction of hypnosis per se; imperative suggestions, or commands for specific effects; "medical clairvoyance" in hypnotic trance, in which patients diagnosed their own condition and predicted the time and manner of their recovery; and suggestion without prior hypnosis, known as "fascination" or "psychotherapeutics." Modern treatments largely involve different types of imperative suggestion with or without hypnosis. However, the therapeutic application of suggestion in hypnosis to functional and other symptoms waned in the first half of the 20th century under the separate pressures of behaviorism and psychoanalysis. In recent decades suggestion in hypnosis has been more widely applied to treating functional neurologic symptoms. Suggestion is typically applied within the context of other treatment approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral, rehabilitative, or psychodynamic therapy. Suggestions are generally symptom-focused (designed to resolve a symptom) or exploratory (using methods such as revivification or age regression to explore experiences associated with symptom onset). The evidence base is dominated by case studies and series, with a paucity of randomized controlled trials. Future evaluation studies should allow for the fact that suggestion with or without hypnosis is a component of broader treatment interventions adapted to a wide range of symptoms and presentations. An important role of the concept of suggestion in the management of functional neurologic symptoms is to raise awareness of how interactions with clinicians and wider clinical contexts can alter expectancies and beliefs of patients in ways that influence the onset, course, and remission of symptoms.
