RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women. Approximately 50% of breast cancers are discovered at an early stage in patients for whom conservative surgery is indicated. Intraoperative localization of non-palpable breast lesions is generally accomplished using a hook wire to mark the area of concern under ultrasound or stereotactic localization. But this technique has several drawbacks (painful, stressful ). We propose the use of a wire-free breast lesion system using miniature radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags. This technique could improve patient comfort and surgical comfort for surgeons. We therefore propose a study to assess the interest of introducing the RFID localization technique at the Jean PERRIN comprehensive cancer center. METHODS: This is a single-center prospective trial designed to assess the interest in introducing the RFID localization technique at the Jean Perrin center. It aims to show the superiority of the RFID technique in terms of patient tolerance compared to the gold-standard (hook wire). A sequential inclusion in time will be performed: 20 inclusions in the gold-standard group, then 20 patients in the RFID group before repeating the inclusion scheme. Any patient requiring preoperative localization will receive a senology consultation. The RFID tag will be placed during this consultation. The hook wire localization will be done the day before the surgery. Patients will fill out a Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HAD) questionnaire at the time of inclusion. They will then fill out a satisfaction questionnaire in 2 steps: during the placement of the device (RFID tag or hook wire) or during the postoperative consultation at 1 month. Radiologists and surgeons will fill out a questionnaire to evaluate the localization technique, respectively after the localization and surgery procedures. DISCUSSION: The RFID study is the first study in France which specifically assesses the interest of the RFID localization in terms of patients comfort. Patient comfort is one of the key elements to take into consideration when managing patients in oncology and new technologies such as RFID tags could improve it. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov ID; NCT04750889 registered on February 11, 2021.

Buckwheat kernels were susceptible to be contaminated by heat-resistant spores. This study aimed to investigate effects of radio frequency (RF) heating, ultraviolet (UV) light and their combination treatment on the inactivation of B. cereus spores and quality attributes of buckwheat kernels. Results showed that Weibull model well fitted the inactivation curves of B. cereus spores under RF heating or UV light, and both of the two techniques had a tailing phenomenon (n < 1) in the decontamination process. But the inactivation levels of spores significantly increased by the combined treatments of RF and UV, regardless of the treatment sequence. Treatment by individual RF heating at 105 °C for 30 min or UV exposure at 5.00 mW/cm2 for 60 min resulted in >2.0 log CFU/g reduction of B. cereus spores. The similar inactivation effect could be achieved with shorter processing times by combined treatments (RF temperature-holding time + UV intensity-irradiation time: 85-10 + 3.50-10, 90-0 + 2.25-10, and 95-5 + 1.00-10). Besides, the colors, antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activities of buckwheat were not significantly deteriorated after these combined treatments, but the enzymatic activities were reduced, which was beneficial for long-term storage. Therefore, the proposed sequential treatment of RF heating and UV light in this study holds great potential to assure the food safety of grains.

This study investigated the potential of yeast extract and radio frequency (RF) treatment as a strategy of reducing salt and enhancing saltiness perception for Lentinus edodes bud. The results of E-nose demonstrated yeast extract and RF treatment improved the saltiness of Lentinus edodes bud. Meanwhile, yeast extract and RF treatment significantly decreased the addition of salt (P < 0.05), and led to the formation of special flavor substances, whereas amino acid nitrogen content decreased. On the other hand, sensory attribute, hardness, total flavonoid and phenolic content, antioxidant capacity of L. edodes buds significantly (P < 0.05) increased after the yeast extract combined with RF treatment. In addition, the modification of water distribution, the formation of dense structure, uniform microstructure and Na+ distribution were observed in treated sample, causing the enhancement of saltiness perception. Accordingly, the alteration of properties contributed to higher sensory properties of texture, taste, flavor, and overall acceptability.

Ocimum basilicum L. is an antiviral and immunity boosting medicinal plant and culinary herb. Potential use of sweet basils in COVID 19 prevention and management is making its demand rise. This study is aimed at germination potential enhancement of sweet basil seeds. Reported study is evidenced with scientific data of radio-frequency cold plasma treatment using Ar + O2 feed gas. O. basilicum seeds, placed inside the rotating glass bottle, were directly exposed to RF (13.56 MHz) plasma produced in Ar + O2 feed gas. Seed treatment was done using RF source power (60 W, 150 W, 240 W), process pressure (0.2 mbar, 0.4 mbar, 0.6 mbar), and treatment time (5 min, 10 min, 15 min) at different combinations. Results show that, the most efficient treatment provide up to â¼89 % of the germination percentage which is an enhancement by 32.3 % from the control. SEM images revealed slight shrinkage in the seed size with eroded appearance over the seed. Enhancement of lipid peroxidation, show that oxidation of seed coat may propagate internally. Water imbibition analysis, of the treated seeds, was carried out for 2-12 hours. Further analysis of seed weight, on every one hour, after soaking shows enhanced water absorption capability except the treatment at 240 W, 0.6 mbar and 15 min. Plasma treatment enhanced carbohydrate content and protein content which is reported to be due to increased primary metabolism. Whereas, increased activity of secondary metabolism results in the enhancement of enzymatic (catalase) and non-enzymatic antioxidants (proline). Vital growth parameters, such as SVI I and SVI II, got amplified by 37 % and 133 % respectively after treatment. Ameliorative effects of plasma treatment are found highly significant with a positive and significant correlation value (p < 0.01) between germination percentages, SVI I, SVI II, carbohydrate, protein and proline show their interrelationship. Ar + O2 plasma treatment is found to bring forth significant changes in the O. basilicum seeds which eventually enhanced the germination potential and it could be a very promising technology for the medicinal crop.
RESUMEN
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has triggered a huge transformation in the use of existing technologies. Many innovations have been made in the field of contact tracing and tracking. However, studies have shown that there is no holistic system that integrates the overall process from data collection to the proper analysis of the data and actions corresponding to the results. It is critical to identify any contact with infected people and to ensure that they do not interact with others. In this research, we propose an IoT-based system that provides automatic tracking and contact tracing of people using radio frequency identification (RFID) and a global positioning system (GPS)-enabled wristband. Additionally, the proposed system defines virtual boundaries for individuals using geofencing technology to effectively monitor and keep track of infected people. Furthermore, the developed system offers robust and modular data collection, authentication through a fingerprint scanner, and real-time database management, and it communicates the health status of the individuals to appropriate authorities. The validation results prove that the proposed system identifies infected people and curbs the spread of the virus inside organizations and workplaces.

A new radio frequency heating-assisted enzymatic extraction (RF-E) method is applied for the determination of phenolic compounds in Akebia trifoliata flowers, compared with hot water, acidified ethanol (EtOH), and enzymatic-assisted (EA) extractions. Non-anthocyanin polyphenol profiles, antibacterial, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory, anti-inflammatory activities, and structures of extracts are evaluated. Results show no significant differences in the extraction of total flavonoid content (15.85-16.63 mg QEs/g) and ACE inhibitory activity (51.30-52.86%) between RF-E and EA extracts. RF-E extract shows the highest anti-inflammatory activities. FTIR and UV spectra reveal that acidified EtOH treatment has a significant effect on the structure of the extract due to its highest flavonoid content (20.33 mg QEs/g), thus it has the highest antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Sixteen non-anthocyanin polyphenols are identified by UPLC-PDA-TOF-ESI-MS and RF pre-treatment did not cause significant compound degradation. The chemometric analysis shows that enzymatic hydrolysis significantly increased biological activities, and the presence of non-anthocyanin polyphenols correlates well with ACE inhibitory and anti-inflammatory activities. Accordingly, A trifoliata flowers have potential as reagents for the food and pharmaceutical industries due to their abundant polyphenols that could be extracted efficiently using RF-E.

Introduction: Postacne erythema, also referred to as postinflammatory erythema, is a common sequela in acne patients. At present, there is no specific treatment for postacne erythema, and some treatment drugs can even aggravate facial erythema. Objective: Our research sought to evaluate the efficacy of a combination therapy of LED red and blue light, radiofrequency (RF) and intense pulsed light (IPL) for the treatment of postacne erythema. Methods: Patients were treated with red and blue light for 2 weeks, followed by RF for 4 treatments over 8 weeks. Finally, patients were treated with intense pulsed light for 16 weeks. Therapeutic outcomes were evaluated by erythema index, postacne erythema severity grading and clinical photography. Results: After 3 stages of treatment, the percentage of excellent subjects was 79.2%, the percentage of good subjects was 17.2%, and the total effective rate was 96.4%. The mean erythema index decreased from 496.17±79.11 to 89.32±81.58 (p<0.01) after treatment. The postacne erythema lesions were rated clear in 22.4%, faint erythema in 74.4%, dull red in 2.8% and deep red only in 0.4% of subjects after three-stage treatments. Conclusion: Our results show that the combination of red and blue light therapy, RF therapy and IPL therapy is more effective than other treatments reported for facial postacne erythema.
RESUMEN
In this study, drying of grated potato in a hot air-assisted radio frequency system (HA-RF) and the associated effects on the final potato flour quality were studied. The drying behavior of the grated potatoes at different electrode distances (70-90 mm) and sample thickness (2-4 cm) was investigated. The safe drying (without burning tendency) of the maximum amount of sample (1000 g) in a reasonable drying time was carried out at 80 mm of electrode gap and 4 cm of sample thickness. HA-RF drying kinetics were studied and compared with hot air (HA) and radio frequency (RF) (without hot air) drying methods. HA-RF drying increased drying rate and shortened drying time by about 58% and 70% compared to HA and RF drying, respectively. The properties of the final potato flour obtained after HA-RF drying were also compared with those produced by RF, HA, and freeze drying. The flour obtained by HA-RF was superior to RF and HA dried samples with better retention of cellular microstructure and color. The drying method significantly affected the functional properties, thermal characteristics, pasting properties, and other characteristics of potato flours. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: HA-RF as an alternative drying technology was used for the first time to produce potato flour. The functional, thermal, and structural properties of the HA-RF dried product were compared with those dried by HA, RF, and freeze drying. The results of this study ensured very useful information for the use of potato flour obtained by different drying methods in the development of products with specific functional and rheological properties.

Wild bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L. var. abbreviata S.) is a kind of Chinese herbal medicine and is also a vegetable and fruit that people eat daily. Wild bitter gourd has many bioactive components, such as saponin, polysaccharide, and protein, and the extract is used to adjust blood sugar in patients with diabetes. The objective of this study was to investigate simultaneous hot air-assisted radio frequency (HARF) drying and pasteurization for bitter gourd extract, and then to evaluate its effects on blood sugar of type II diabetic mice. The results showed that the solid-liquid ratio of the wild bitter gourd powder to water was 1:10 and it was extracted using focused ultrasonic extraction (FUE) for only 10 min with 70 °C water. Then, 1 kg of concentrated bitter gourd extract was mixed with soybean fiber powder at a ratio of 2:1.1. It was dried by HARF, and the temperature of the sample could reach above 80 °C in only 12 min to simultaneously reduce moisture content (wet basis) from 58% to 15% and achieve a pasteurization effect to significantly reduce the total bacterial and mold counts. Type II diabetic mice induced by nicotinamide and streptozocin (STZ) for two weeks and then were fed four-week feeds containing 5% RF-dried wild gourd extract did not raise fasting blood glucose. Therefore, the dried powder of wild bitter gourd extracts by HARF drying had a hypoglycemic effect.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: A large amount of evidence shows that excessive fat intake can increase the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. The main purpose of this study was to use radio frequency (RF) technology to prepare low-fat French fries. RESULTS: RF treatment for 10 min significantly decreased the force required to cut potatoes and inhibited the enzymatic browning of fresh-cut potatoes. Moreover, RF treatment increased the hardness, gumminess, and chewiness of French fries from 388.55 g, 85.67, and 33.27 to 776.93 g, 159.36, and 70.11, respectively. Furthermore, RF treatment for 10 min reduced the oil content of French fries by 28.0% compared to that of the control group. This result was related to the pre-gelatinized potato starch content after RF treatment. Pre-gelatinized starch forms a 'protective film', that prevents oil from entering the fries during frying. CONCLUSION: Moderate RF treatment (10 min) reduced the oil content of French fries without making their texture significantly different from that of commercial French fries. These findings may provide a new perspective for the application of RF technology in the development of low-fat fried foods. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

The design, fabrication, and characterization of wafer-scale, zero-bias power detectors based on 2D MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs) are demonstrated. The MoS2 FETs are fabricated using a wafer-scale process on 8 µm-thick polyimide film, which, in principle, serves as a flexible substrate. The performances of two chemical vapor deposition MoS2 sheets, grown with different processes and showing different thicknesses, are analyzed and compared from the single device fabrication and characterization steps to the circuit level. The power-detector prototypes exploit the nonlinearity of the transistors above the cut-off frequency of the devices. The proposed detectors are designed employing a transistor model based on measurement results. The fabricated circuits operate in the Ku-band between 12 and 18 GHz, with a demonstrated voltage responsivity of 45 V W-1 at 18 GHz in the case of monolayer MoS2 and 104 V W-1 at 16 GHz in the case of multilayer MoS2 , both achieved without applied DC bias. They are the best-performing power detectors fabricated on flexible substrate reported to date. The measured dynamic range exceeds 30 dB, outperforming other semiconductor technologies like silicon complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor circuits and GaAs Schottky diodes.
RESUMEN
Microbial contamination is a persistent problem for grain industry. Many studies have shown that radio frequency (RF) heating can effectively reduce pathogens populations in low moisture foods, but there is a lack on the efficacy to decontaminate natural microbiome. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of different RF heating conditions on natural microbial populations and physicochemical properties of buckwheat. In this study, 30 buckwheat samples collected from 10 different Provinces in China were analyzed for their microbial loads, and the samples with the highest microbial populations were used for further study to select the suitable RF heating conditions. The results showed that microbial loads in tested buckwheat kernels were in the range of 3.4-6.2 log CFU/g. Samples from Shanxi (SX-3) had significantly higher microbial counts than other samples. The selected four temperature-time combinations: 75 °C-20 min, 80 °C-10 min, 85 °C-5 min, and 90 °C-0 min of RF heating could reduce microbial counts to <3.0 log CFU/g in buckwheat kernels at 16.5% w.b. moisture content. Furthermore, the reduction populations of the inoculated pathogens (Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Cronobacter sakazakii, and Bacillus cereus) reached 4.0 log CFU/g under the above conditions, and almost 5.0 log CFU/g especially at high temperature-short holding time combinations (85 °C-5 min and 90 °C-0 min). Besides, physicochemical properties evaluation also showed the insignificant color changes and nutrients loss after RF treatment at 90 °C-0 min. Therefore, the RF heating at 90 °C-0 min holds greater potential than the other lower temperature-longer holding time combinations for applications in buckwheat pasteurization.

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the frequency of visits to a mineral feeder equipped with radio-frequency identification (RFID). In Exp. 1, twelve heifers (Braford, Brahman, and White Angus; n = 4/breed) were fitted with RFID ear tags and placed into a pasture with access to a RFID-equipped mineral feeder. Number of visits were greater (P ≤ 0.05) during daytime than the night period. Brahman and Braford heifers favored (P ≤ 0.05) daytime than night period. White Angus heifers did not display a specific period preference (P = 0.32). In Exp. 2, Black Angus and Brahman cows (n = 15 and 19, respectively) were placed into a pasture with access to a RFID-equipped mineral feeder. Brahman cows made more (P < 0.01) visits to the mineral feeder than Black Angus cows. There were no breed differences on the number of visits during the morning (P = 0.25) and night (P ≤ 0.25) periods, but Brahman cows made more (P ≤ 0.05) visits to the mineral feeder in the afternoon period than Black Angus cows. In Exp. 3, the location of the mineral feeder was tested using 3 groups of Bos indicus-influenced heifers (n = 12/group). The mineral feeder was moved weekly within pasture. The number of visits to the mineral feeder differed for each location (P < 0.001) with visits being greatest when mineral feeder was placed near supplement and water, followed by center of the pasture, and lastly in the shade.

A radio frequency microelectromechanical system switch (MSS) manufactured by the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process is presented. The MSS is a capacitive shunt type. Structure for the MSS consists of coplanar waveguide (CPW) lines, a membrane, and springs. The membrane locates over the CPW lines. The surface of signal line for the CPW has a silicon dioxide dielectric layer. The fabrication of the MSS contains a CMOS process and a post-process. The MSS has a sacrificial oxide layer after the CMOS process. In the post-processing, a wet etching of buffer oxide etch (BOE) etchant is employed to etch the sacrificial oxide layer, so that the membrane is released. Actuation voltage for the MSS is simulated using the CoventorWare software. The springs have a low stiffness, so that the actuation voltage reduces. The measured results reveal that actuation voltage for the MSS is 10 V. Insertion loss for the MSS is 0.9 dB at 41 GHz and isolation for the MSS is 30 dB at 41 GHz.
RESUMEN
Radio frequency (RF) treatment technology has now been studied and used for kinds of food products as its rapid and volumetric heating effects. It is meaningful to study the characteristics of potato drying with a new RF treatment method. In this study, intermitted RF combined treatments were used to get high-efficiency dehydration effects for potato drying, but the impact and mechanism of RF radiation on drying efficiency or quality is still unknown. To explore the drying characteristics, the effects of different RF radiation and the associated intermittent periods on the characterization of color, crystalline, thermal, pasting, rheology, and structural properties of potato flour were systematically studied. Longer RF radiation period (7 min) has a positive effect on drying efficiency and quality. The effect of intermittent period was not as significant as that of RF radiation, but a slightly increasing trend of the quality properties with intermittent period also indicated the tempering effect. The combined action of RF intermittent treatment on potato drying was found and investigated in this study, which may support RF drying processing improvement.

Vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) is a chronic dermatological disease of unclear etiology characterized by severe itching and progressive atrophy. Long-term topical corticosteroid is the first-line treatment for VLS. However, this treatment requires patient compliance, is associated with adverse side effects, and some patients do not respond to corticosteroids. Treatment with thermal and photothermal technologies have been studied as alternative or complementary therapies to improve VLS symptoms and skin trophism. Microablative fractional radiofrequency (MFR) is used in dermatology to improve tissue trophism. It has also been used in gynecological patients to treat vulvovaginal atrophy by stimulating dermal neocollagenesis and neoelastinogenesis. We present the case of a 39-year-old woman with refractory VLS who was treated with local applications of microablative fractional radiofrequency. She had satisfactory, long-term, improvement of symptoms and vulvar trophism, and stopped using corticosteroids.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided thermal ablations have become one of the main options for treating benign thyroid nodules. To determine efficacy of thermal ablation of benign thyroid nodules, we performed a meta-analysis of studies with long-term follow-up of more than 3 years. METHODS: Databases were searched for studies published up to August 25, 2019, reporting patients with benign thyroid nodules treated with thermal ablation and with follow-up data of more than 3 years. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed according to PRISMA guidelines. The analysis yielded serial volume reduction rates (VRRs) of ablated nodules for up to 3 years or more, and adverse effect of ablation during follow-up. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and laser ablation (LA) were compared in a subgroup analysis. RESULTS: The pooled VRRs for ablated nodules showed rapid volume reduction before 12 months, a plateau from 12 to 36 months, and more volume reduction appearing after 36 months, demonstrating long-term maintenance of treatment efficacy. Thermal ablation had an acceptable complication rate of 3.8%. Moreover, patients undergoing nodule ablation showed no unexpected delayed complications during the follow-up period. In the subgroup analysis, RFA was shown to be superior to LA in terms of the pooled VRR and the number of patients who underwent delayed surgery. CONCLUSION: Thermal ablations are safe and effective methods for treating benign thyroid nodules, as shown by a long follow-up analysis of more than 3 years. In addition, RFA showed superior VRRs compared with LA for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules, with less regrowth and less delayed surgery.

In order to determine the level of cell damage in cancerous cells, current cytogenetic tests have limitations such as time consumption and high cost. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the ability of nonlinear refractive (NLR) index as a predictor of breast cell damage caused by magneto-plasmonic nanoparticle based thermo-radiotherapy treatments. MCF-7 breast cancer cells were subjected individually to the treatment of radiation, radio-frequency (RF) hyperthermia, and radiationâ¯+â¯RF hyperthermia. These treatments were repeated in the presence of magneto-plasmonic nanoparticle (Au@IONP). The MTT and nonlinear optical assays were used to evaluate the damage induced by different treatment modalities. The results of MTT were correlated with Z-scan, as the magnitude of nonlinear refraction increased with higher intensity of induced cell damages. In this regard, the lowest cell viability (38 %,) and highest magnitude of NLR index (+28.12) were obtained from combination of radiation (at 4â¯Gy dose) and hyperthermia treatment in the presence of nanoparticles. The proposed optical index (NLR) indicated high capability and can be used as an auxiliary tool to monitor induced cell damage during different treatment strategies. This technique is fast, noninvasive, does not impose cost, and finally does not waste materials.

This research explored the application of combined radio frequency and hot air drying (RF-HAD) technology on corn seeds. Drying characteristics and seed vigor were investigated at different RF electrode gaps (140, 150 and 160 mm). To better demonstrate the feasibility of applying RF-HAD on corn seeds, tempering-intermittent hot air drying (HAD) was studied as a comparison. Reduced electrode gap corresponding to elevated average heating rate and power efficiency resulted in decreased seeds vigor and specific energy consumption. The assistance of RF significantly increased the drying rate of corn seeds and reduced drying duration by up to 70% compared with HAD. A higher dehydrogenase activity (DHA) but a lower germination percentage (GP) was observed in RF-HAD samples as compared with HAD ones. Corn seeds were promoted to be dormant by RF-HAD according to dormancy-breaking results and isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) analysis.

There are approximately 12 000 new individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) each year, and close to 200 000 individuals live with a SCI-related disability in the United States. The majority of patients with SCI have bladder dysfunction as a result of their injury, with over 75% unable to void volitionally following their injury. In patients with traumatic SCI, intermittent catheterization is commonly recommended, but a lack of adherence to clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) has been observed, with up to 50% discontinuing CIC within 5 yr of injury. The Finetech Brindley Bladder System (FBBS) is an implantable sacral nerve stimulator for improving bladder function in patients with SCI, avoiding the need for CIC. The FDA-approved implantation (Humanitarian Device Exemption H980008) of the FBBS is combined with a posterior rhizotomy to reduce reflex contraction of the bladder, improving continence. However, the posterior rhizotomy is irreversible and has unwanted effects; therefore, the current FDA-approved implantation is being studied without rhizotomy as part of a clinical trial (Investigational Device Exemption G150201) (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02978638). In this video, we present a case of a 66-yr-old female who presented 40-yr status post-T12 SCI, resulting in complete paraplegia and neurogenic bladder not satisfactorily controlled with CIC. We demonstrate the operative steps to complete the implantation of the device without rhizotomy in the first patient enrolled as part of the clinical trial Electrical Stimulation for Continence After SCI (NCT02978638). Appropriate IRB and patient consent were obtained.
