Introduction: Cyanoacrylate, used as a topical adhesive for wound closure in clinical settings, can result in poor cosmetic outcome on application to skin. Lack of formal medical or dermatological training among social media influencers poses risks of improper diagnosis, incorrect treatments, ineffective home remedies, and potential self-injury or long-term skin effects, especially among adolescents. Case presentation: The authors present a case of a young girl with a persistent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after using cyanoacrylate on her chin as a home remedy to reduce her double chin problem after learning from a video on social media. Biopsy findings were consistent with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in dermis. Clinical discussion: Application of cyanoacrylate over skin can result in allergic reactions, burn injuries, infections, itching, skin blistering, and aesthetic issues. Persistent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can be a poor cosmetic outcome on application of cyanoacrylate over skin. Conclusion: Inadequate social media safety regulations require healthcare professionals to be aware of social trends among adolescents and to encourage them for open conversations and professional help-seeking during times of distress in this digital era.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is common among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and has considerable adverse impacts on disease progression and health outcomes. Mindfulness-based intervention is a promising complementary approach to address patients' psychological needs and promote holistic well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the effects of a social media-based mindfulness psycho-behavioral intervention (MCARE) on psychological distress, psychological stress, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and cardiovascular risk factors among patients with ACS. METHODS: This study was a 2-arm, parallel-group randomized controlled trial. We recruited 178 patients (mean age 58.7, SD 8.9 years; 122/178, 68.5% male) with ACS at 2 tertiary hospitals in Jinan, China. Participants were randomly assigned to the MCARE group (n=89) or control group (n=89). The 6-week intervention consisted of 1 face-to-face session (phase I) and 5 weekly WeChat (Tencent Holdings Ltd)-delivered sessions (phase II) on mindfulness training and health education and lifestyle modification. The primary outcomes were depression and anxiety. Secondary outcomes included psychological stress, HRQoL, and cardiovascular risk factors (ie, smoking status, physical activity, dietary behavior, BMI, blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood glucose). Outcomes were measured at baseline (T0), immediately after the intervention (T1), and 12 weeks after the commencement of the intervention (T2). RESULTS: The MCARE group showed significantly greater reductions in depression (T1: ß=-2.016, 95% CI -2.584 to -1.449, Cohen d=-1.28, P<.001; T2: ß=-2.089, 95% CI -2.777 to -1.402, Cohen d=-1.12, P<.001) and anxiety (T1: ß=-1.024, 95% CI -1.551 to -0.497, Cohen d=-0.83, P<.001; T2: ß=-0.932, 95% CI -1.519 to -0.346, Cohen d=-0.70, P=.002). Significantly greater improvements were also observed in psychological stress (ß=-1.186, 95% CI -1.678 to -0.694, Cohen d=-1.41, P<.001), physical HRQoL (ß=0.088, 95% CI 0.008-0.167, Cohen d=0.72, P=.03), emotional HRQoL (ß=0.294, 95% CI 0.169-0.419, Cohen d=0.81, P<.001), and general HRQoL (ß=0.147, 95% CI 0.070-0.224, Cohen d=1.07) at T1, as well as dietary behavior (ß=0.069, 95% CI 0.003-0.136, Cohen d=0.75, P=.04), physical activity level (ß=177.542, 95% CI -39.073 to 316.011, Cohen d=0.51, P=.01), and systolic blood pressure (ß=-3.326, 95% CI -5.928 to -0.725, Cohen d=-1.32, P=.01) at T2. The overall completion rate of the intervention (completing ≥5 sessions) was 76% (68/89). Positive responses to the questions of the acceptability questionnaire ranged from 93% (76/82) to 100% (82/82). CONCLUSIONS: The MCARE program generated favorable effects on psychological distress, psychological stress, HRQoL, and several aspects of cardiovascular risk factors in patients with ACS. This study provides clues for guiding clinical practice in the recognition and management of psychological distress and integrating the intervention into routine rehabilitation practice. BACKGROUND: Social support is essential to promoting optimal health outcomes for women with breast cancer. However, an estimated 12% of women with breast cancer simultaneously experience intimate partner violence (IPV; physical, psychological, or sexual abuse by an intimate partner). Women who experience IPV during breast cancer may lack traditional social support, and thus seek out alternative sources of support. Online community forums, such as Reddit, can provide accessible social connections within breast cancer-specific communities. However, it is largely unknown how women with breast cancer use Reddit to describe and seek support for experiences of IPV. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore how patients with breast cancer describe toxic relationships with their partners and immediate family members on Reddit. METHODS: This exploratory, cross-sectional, topic-modeling study analyzed textual data from 96 users in the r/breastcancer subreddit in February 2023. The meaning extraction method, inclusive of principal component analysis, was used to identify underlying components. Components were subjected to sentiment analysis and summative content analysis with emergent categorical development to articulate themes. RESULTS: Seven themes emerged related to toxic relationships: (1) contextualizing storytelling with lymph nodes, (2) toxic behavior and venting emotions, (3) abandonment and abuse following diagnosis, (4) toxic relationships and social-related fears, (5) inner strength and navigating breast cancer over time, (6) assessing social relationships and interactions, and (7) community advice and support. Toxic relationships were commonly characterized by isolation, abandonment, and emotional abuse, which had profound emotional consequences for patients. Reddit facilitated anonymous venting about toxic relationships that helped patients cope with intense feelings and stress. Exchanging advice and support about navigating toxic relationships during breast cancer were core functions of the r/breastcancer community. CONCLUSIONS: Findings emphasized the value of Reddit as a source of social support for patients with breast cancer experiencing toxic relationships. Clinicians who understand that many patients with breast cancer experience toxic relationships and considerable psychological sequelae are better prepared to support their patients' holistic well-being. Further investigation of Reddit as a possible resource for advice, information, and support has the potential to help inform clinical practice and subsequently, patient health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: A healthy nutrition in pregnancy supports maternal health and fetal development, decreasing the risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Guidance by prenatal care professionals can increase women's awareness regarding the importance of nutrition in pregnancy and thereby contribute to a reduced risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the needs, wishes and preferences of pregnant women regarding the interprofessional guidance on nutrition in pregnancy. METHODS: Using a qualitative approach and a purposive maximum variation sampling strategy, 25 pregnant women were recruited to participate in six semi-structured, guideline-oriented online focus groups. In addition, two semi-structured, guideline-oriented interviews, with a midwife and an obstetrician, were conducted. The focus groups and interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Transcripts were analysed using a systematic deductive-inductive approach to qualitative content analysis according to Kuckartz. RESULTS: Focus group participants covered diverse perspectives in terms of their age, different models of prenatal care as well as dietary forms from omnivorous to vegan. The majority of women perceived the guidance on nutrition during pregnancy as insufficient. Involved healthcare professionals, namely midwives and obstetricians, should provide more consistent information, especially to avoid uncertainties exacerbated by the internet and social media. There is a need for individual nutrition information regarding dietary supplements and the specifics of different dietary forms during pregnancy, such as a vegan diet. The majority of participants supported the integration of a free-of-charge professional nutrition counselling in prenatal care. Interviews with experts identified time pressure and the complexity of nutrition as a topic as the main obstacles in consultation settings. Both midwife and obstetrician emphasised the need for improved professional education on nutrition in pregnancy in their respective studies. CONCLUSION: Professional guidance for pregnant women on nutrition and uncertainties going along with certain forms of diet during pregnancy could alleviate the burden and overwhelming amount of web-based information. Additionally, information adapted to the needs, wishes and preferences of pregnant women would improve prenatal care through a more personalised approach. The quality of nutrition guidance in pregnancy should be improved by the implementation of this topic in the education of involved healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Social media is a popular source of information about food and nutrition. There is a high degree of inaccurate and poor-quality nutrition-related information present online. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality and accuracy of nutrition-related information posted by popular Australian Instagram accounts and examine trends in quality and accuracy based on author, topic, post engagement, account verification and number of followers. METHODS: A sample of posts by Australian Instagram accounts with ≥ 100,000 followers who primarily posted about nutrition was collected between September 2020 and September 2021. Posts containing nutrition-related information were evaluated to determine the quality and accuracy of the information. Quality was assessed using the Principles for Health-Related Information on Social Media tool and accuracy was assessed against information contained in the Australian Dietary Guidelines, Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition database, Nutrient Reference Values and Metafact. RESULTS: A total of 676 posts were evaluated for quality and 510 posts for accuracy, originating from 47 Instagram accounts. Overall, 34.8% of posts were classified as being of poor quality, 59.2% mediocre, 6.1% good and no posts were of excellent quality. A total of 44.7% of posts contained inaccuracies. Posts authored by nutritionists or dietitians were associated with higher quality scores (ß, 17.8, CI 13.94-21.65; P < 0.001) and higher accuracy scores (OR 4.69, CI 1.81-12.14, P = 0.001) compared to brands and other accounts. Information about supplements was of lower accuracy (OR 0.23, CI 0.10-0.51, P < 0.001) compared to information about weight loss and other nutrition topics. Engagement tended to be higher for posts of lower quality (ß -0.59, P = 0.012), as did engagement rate (ß -0.57, P = 0.016). There was no relationship between followers or account verification and information quality or accuracy and no relationship between engagement and accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: Nutrition-related information published by influential Australian Instagram accounts is often inaccurate and of suboptimal quality. Information about supplements and posts by brand accounts is of the lowest quality and accuracy and information posted by nutritionists and dietitians is of a higher standard. Instagram users are at risk of being misinformed when engaging with Australian Instagram content for information about nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Use of legal and illegal muscle-building drugs and dietary supplements has been linked to many adverse health and social outcomes. Research has shown that social media use is associated with the use of these drugs and dietary supplements; however, it remains unknown whether social media companies have specific policies related to the content and advertising of muscle-building drugs and dietary supplements on their platforms. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the content and advertising policies of eight popular social media companies related to muscle-building drugs and dietary supplements. METHODS: Content and advertising policies for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, and Reddit were analyzed in November 2022 to determine whether there were any provisions related to legal (e.g., whey protein) and illegal (e.g., anabolic-androgenic steroids) muscle-building drugs and dietary supplements. Policies were classified as either none, restricted, or prohibited. RESULTS: All eight social media platforms had explicit policies prohibiting user-generated content and advertising of illicit drugs and substances (e.g., anabolic-androgenic steroids). User-generated content and advertising policies related to legal muscle-building dietary supplements across the platforms varied; however, none of the eight social media companies had a specific policy regarding user content. CONCLUSIONS: Findings underscore the need for stronger social media content and advertising policies related to legal muscle-building dietary supplements.

BACKGROUND: Social media usage has been ubiquitous and extensively integrated into the daily lives of student nurses. However, there exists a paucity of understanding regarding the influence of social media on student nurses' personal and professional development. OBJECTIVE: To examine the influence of social media on student nurses' personal and professional values. DESIGN: A systematic mixed-studies review. METHODS: English language published studies were sourced from hand searches and seven electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, ProQuest Dissertation and Theses Global, Scopus, and Web of Science) from the inception of each database to January 2023. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies were included. Two main themes and eight subthemes were derived through thematic synthesis. The first main theme, Shaping Student Nurses into Nurses, included four subthemes: 1.1) Personal Development, 1.2) Professional Development, 1.3) Advocacy, and 1.4) Networking. The second main theme, Repercussions of Social Media Usage, included four subthemes: 2.1) Frustrations, 2.2) Discriminative Feelings, 2.3) Compulsive feelings, and 2.4) Consequences of Inappropriate Usage. CONCLUSION: The ubiquitous utilization of social media among the current generation of student nurses, for personal, educational, and professional purposes, has precipitated transformative effects conducive to their holistic development. Notwithstanding the potential perils associated with privacy violation and inappropriate usage, educational institutions can develop pedagogical strategies and guidelines in collaboration with healthcare institutions and professionals, aimed at the incorporation of social media within the educational curricula and the prospective workplace environments of student nurses.

In many criminal cases, outcomes rely on eyewitness evidence. Exposure to misleading information after an event reduces the accuracy of witnesses' memories. In some circumstances, warnings about misinformation can protect witnesses. As social media is a growing source of misleading information, this study examined the effect of misleading post-event information delivered via a social media-style video, as well as the utility of a minimal versus detailed warning. Participants (N = 145) watched a video showing an electrician stealing items from a client's home. Next, they received one of three pre-warnings regarding forthcoming misleading information: a minimal warning indicating that caution should be taken, a detailed warning specifying the presence of misleading information, or no warning. Participants received the misleading information via a social media video or a standard text-based narrative. Finally, they completed a recognition test. Although delivery method did not affect errors for misleading items, detailed warnings were only effective against text-based misleading information. Participants were more confident about their correct than incorrect responses for misleading items; confidence was not affected by delivery method or warning. This experiment is the first to demonstrate people's susceptibility to misleading post-event information delivered in a social media-style video using an eyewitness paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Social Media Influencers (SMIs) are a fashionable way of marketing products by creating electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM) on social media. The marketing of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) by SMIs is becoming increasingly popular and gaining credibility within consumers on social media platforms. Nonetheless, advising about healthcare products on social media should be examined as it is different from endorsing other kinds of commercial products. The aim of this study is to develop a model that provides the underlying mechanisms of the stimuli of SMIs on social media towards consumers' purchase intention of CAMs. METHODS: This study used best fit framework synthesis methods to develop the model. A priori theory selection was conducted by identifying a BeHEMoTh strategy (Behavior of Interest, Health context, Exclusions and Models or Theories) to systematically approach identifying relevant models and theories relative to the research aim. Further evidence derived from primary research studies that describe the behavior identified is coded against selected a priori theory to develop the model. RESULTS: This study presents a novel model for understanding the purchase behavior of CAMs using SMIs as a marketing strategy. The model included two well-known theories (theory of planned behaviour theory and source credibility theory) as well as extensive existing research from a multidisciplinary perspective. The model is exclusively designed to help identify elements affecting perceived source credibility and factors that have an influence over consumers' preferences to purchase CAMs by taking into consideration SMIs' endorsements. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides unique insights introducing new research areas to health literature and offers, new roles for healthcare professionals in this digital era by gaining new skills and competencies required to provide more credible and accurate information about CAMs. The study also highlights the new marketing era of online health-related product endorsements and recommends that policymakers and researchers carefully evaluate the impact of SMI's on the use of CAMs, as well as to regulate the content of these promotional materials.

BACKGROUND: Psychedelic substances have demonstrated promise in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Significant media coverage has been dedicated to psychedelic medicine, but it is unclear whether the public associates psilocybin with its potential therapeutic benefits. The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in depression, anxiety, and substance abuse in the general population. OBJECTIVE: This study attempts to link increases in interest in these disorders with increases in interest in psilocybin using Google Trends. METHODS: Weekly interest-over-time Google Trends data for 4 years, from the week of March 11, 2018, to the week of March 6, 2022, were obtained for the following terms: "psilocybin," "psychedelic therapy," "cannabis," "cocaine," "antidepressant," "depression," "anxiety," and "addiction." Important psilocybin-related news and the declaration of the pandemic were noted. Trends data for each of the queried terms were plotted, and multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the slope of the prepandemic and postpandemic data with 95% CIs. Nonparametric Tau-U analysis was performed correcting for baseline trends. Results from this test were used to make inferences about the pre- and postpandemic trends and inferences about the change in overall level of searches between the 2 groups. RESULTS: Tau values for prepandemic data were significant for stable trends, all ranging -0.4 to 0.4. Tau values for postpandemic data showed positive trends for "psilocybin," "psychedelic therapy," and "antidepressant." All other trends remained stable in the range of -0.4 to 0.4. When comparing Tau values for pre- and postpandemic data, overall increases in relative search volume (RSV) were seen for "psilocybin," "psychedelic therapy," and "anxiety," and overall decreases in RSV were seen for "depression," "addiction," and "cocaine." Overall RSVs for "cannabis" and "antidepressant" remained stable as Tau values ranged between -0.4 and 0.4. In the immediate aftermath of the declaration of the pandemic, drop-offs in interest were seen for all terms except for "anxiety" and "cannabis." After the initial shock of a global pandemic, "psilocybin" and "psychedelic therapy" groups demonstrated increases in interest trends and overall RSV. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that overall interest in "psilocybin" and "psychedelic therapy" increased at higher rates and to higher levels after than before the declaration of the pandemic. This is consistent with our hypothesis that interest increased for these treatments after the pandemic as incidence of depression, anxiety, and addiction increased. However, there may be other drivers of interest for these topics, since interest in antidepressants-the typical pharmacologic treatments for depression and anxiety-followed the expected pattern of drop-off and accelerated interest back to prepandemic levels. Interest in "psilocybin" and "psychedelic therapy" may have also been partially driven by popular culture hype and novelty, explaining why interest increased at a higher rate post pandemic and continued to grow, surpassing prior interest.

Background: Onychomycosis is the most frequently diagnosed nail condition in clinical practice. With the growing popularity of TikTok and online health information-seeking behavior, it is imperative to understand onychomycosis-related content on this platform. Objective: Our objective was to assess content and quality of the most popular onychomycosis-related content on TikTok. Methods: We queried TikTok for videos using the search terms "onychomycosis" and "nail fungus" for the top 100 videos by view count, with DISCERN scoring used to rate videos for quality. Results: Average DISCERN score was 1.77 and dermatologists posted videos with the highest mean score (2.56). Most of the videos were educational (72%) and/or related to treatment (69%). Home remedies were recommended more often (58%) than FDA-approved therapies (7%). Physician versus nonphysician posted videos had higher mean DISCERN score (2.28 vs. 1.44) (p < 0.001), greater view number (1,209,953 vs. 343,993) (p < 0.05), and more often discussed medical therapy (p < 0.05). Conclusion: While social media is a valuable resource for providing medical information to an interminable audience, there are significant shortcomings. Therefore, we recommend that dermatologists advise patients against relying on social media for medical information and consider using social media to provide accessible evidence-based health education on onychomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Hypertriglyceridemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Internet usage in China is increasing, giving rise to large-scale data sources, especially to access, disseminate, and discuss medical information. Social media listening (SML) is a new approach to analyze and monitor online discussions related to various health-related topics in diverse diseases, which can generate insights into users' experiences and expectations. However, to date, no studies have evaluated the utility of SML to understand patients' cognizance and expectations pertaining to the management of hypertriglyceridemia. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to utilize SML to explore the disease cognition level of patients with hypertriglyceridemia, choice of intervention measures, and the status quo of online consultations and question-and-answer (Q&A) search platforms. METHODS: An infosurveillance study was conducted wherein a disease-specific comprehensive search was performed between 2004 and 2020 in Q&A search and online consultation platforms. Predefined single and combined keywords related to hypertriglyceridemia were used in the search, including disease, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment indicators; lifestyle interventions; and therapeutic agents. The search output was aggregated using an aggregator tool and evaluated. RESULTS: Disease-specific consultation data (n=69,845) and corresponding response data (n=111,763) were analyzed from 20 data sources (6 Q&A search platforms and 14 online consultation platforms). Doctors from inland areas had relatively high voice volumes and appear to exert a substantial influence on these platforms. Patients with hypertriglyceridemia engaging on the internet have an average level of cognition about the disease and its intervention measures. However, a strong demand for the concept of the disease and "how to treat it" was observed. More emphasis on the persistence of the disease and the safety of medications was observed. Young patients have a lower willingness for drug interventions, whereas patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia have a clearer intention to use drug intervention and few patients have a strong willingness for the use of traditional Chinese medicine. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this disease-specific SML study revealed that patients with hypertriglyceridemia in China actively seek information from both online Q&A search and consultation platforms. However, the integrity of internet doctors' suggestions on lifestyle interventions and the accuracy of drug intervention recommendations still need to be improved. Further, a combined prospective qualitative study with SML is required for added rigor and confirmation of the relevance of the findings.

BACKGROUND: Social media platforms are increasingly being used to disseminate messages about prenatal health. However, to date, we lack a systematic assessment of how to evaluate the impact of official prenatal health messaging and campaigns using social media data. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to review both the published and gray literature on how official prenatal health messaging and campaigns have been evaluated to date in terms of impact, acceptability, effectiveness, and unintended consequences, using social media data. METHODS: A total of 6 electronic databases were searched and supplemented with the hand-searching of reference lists. Both published and gray literature were eligible for review. Data were analyzed using content analysis for descriptive data and a thematic synthesis approach to summarize qualitative evidence. A quality appraisal tool, designed especially for use with social media data, was used to assess the quality of the included articles. RESULTS: A total of 11 studies were eligible for the review. The results showed that the most common prenatal health behavior targeted was alcohol consumption, and Facebook was the most commonly used source of social media data. The majority (n=6) of articles used social media data for descriptive purposes only. The results also showed that there was a lack of evaluation of the effectiveness, acceptability, and unintended consequences of the prenatal health message or campaign. CONCLUSIONS: Social media is a widely used and potentially valuable resource for communicating and evaluating prenatal health messaging. However, this review suggests that there is a need to develop and adopt sound methodology on how to evaluate prenatal health messaging using social media data, for the benefit of future research and to inform public health practice.

Background and aims In the age of social media, a vast amount of information is widely and easily accessible. Platforms such as Instagram allow its users to post pictures and videos that can reach millions of users. This could be utilized by healthcare providers to provide education to a vast number of the population about a disease such as hypothyroidism with an easily digestible infographic. However, this easy accessibility comes with the risk of rampant misinformation. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of Instagram posts, the type of information, and the quality and reliability of information posted about hypothyroidism. Methodology This is a cross-sectional observational study that was conducted over the course of days on Instagram. Top posts meeting inclusion criteria under seven different hypothyroidism-related hashtags were surveyed for content and social media metrics by the authors utilizing Google Forms. The quality and reliability of the posts were analyzed using the global quality scale and DISCERN scales, respectively. The data were exported to an Excel sheet and analyzed using the SPSS software version 21.0 (Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). Results A total of 629 posts met the inclusion criteria of which 62.5% were images and 37.5% were reels. The content heavily focused on the medical aspect of hypothyroidism with posts about symptoms (46.1%), prevention (39.59%), cause/etiology (36.41%), and treatment (34.34%). The median DISCERN score which reflects the reliability of the posts uploaded was highest for doctors at 3 and the least reliable posts were uploaded by dieticians, naturopathic doctors, and patients. This study found that the quality of posts uploaded by nutritionists and naturopathic doctors with a median Global Quality Score (GQS) score of 3. Conclusions There is a need to establish a quality control body that regulates the quality and reliability of the posts to curb misinformation and help patients gain easy access to reliable resources that will aid their decision-making.

BACKGROUND:  TikTok is a popular platform that can be used for medical insights. However, spreading inaccurate information about diagnosing or treating medical conditions can undermine the quality of patient care. Our assessment focused on the discourse surrounding knee osteoarthritis on TikTok, with two primary objectives: 1) identifying the creators behind osteoarthritis-related content, and 2) examining whether a connection exists between the reach of video content and the strength of recommendations provided. METHODS:  The top 100 TikTok videos were chosen based on likes on March 29, 2023. Posts were identified using the hashtag ("#Osteoarthritis"). Videos were classified by the following: number of likes, comments, shares, date of upload, uploader (medical professional, non-medical professional, or business), and video content (medical treatment, home remedy, personal story). Treatments were rated according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline for Osteoarthritis using the strength of evidence criteria (1-4 stars). Descriptive and univariate analyses were performed. RESULTS:  Among the top videos, 67.7% were uploaded by medical professionals. Private companies, despite having the highest average likes (29,681.2) and shares (1,367.5) per video, had a limited average evidence strength of 2.13. Physician-created videos had the second-highest average number of likes (25,440.1) and shares (1,224.5) per video with a strength of evidence of 3.03. Non-medical professional videos had the lowest evidence support (0.89). Medical treatments, the most liked and shared content, had the lowest evidence strength (1). There was no statistically significant correlation between the number of likes (p=0.808), comments (p=0.647), or shares (p=0.439) to the strength of evidence regarding the intervention. DISCUSSION:  TikTok can be unreliable for knee osteoarthritis treatment information. It is common to find non-physicians sharing medical advice on the platform, with medical treatments demonstrating the weakest level of supporting evidence. Orthopaedic surgeons should advise their patients that TikTok treatment recommendations may not align with established guidelines.

The impact of maternal trait mindfulness on the development of preschoolers' social competence is receiving increasing attention from researchers. However, the mediating mechanisms that link maternal mindfulness to preschoolers' social competence are still not well understood. This study examined the mediating effect of maternal self-control and problematic social media use on the association between maternal trait mindfulness and preschoolers' social competence. We administered 407 mothers of preschoolers in China a questionnaire to assess their trait mindfulness, self-control, problematic social media use, and the degree of social competence of their children. After controlling for demographic variables, the results showed that (1) Maternal trait mindfulness was positively related to preschoolers' social competence; (2) Maternal self-control and problematic social media use independently mediated the relationship between maternal trait mindfulness and preschoolers' social competence; and (3) Maternal self-control and problematic social media use play a chain-mediating role between maternal trait mindfulness and preschoolers' social competence. These findings have enhanced our understanding of how maternal trait mindfulness influences preschoolers' social competence and holds important implications for interventions aimed at enhancing preschoolers' social competence.

BACKGROUND: After 3 years of its zero-COVID policy, China lifted its stringent pandemic control measures with the announcement of the 10 new measures on December 7, 2022. Existing estimates suggest 90%-97% of the total population was infected during December. This change created a massive demand for COVID-19 medications and treatments, either modern medicines or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore (1) how China's exit from the zero-COVID policy impacted media and the public's attention to COVID-19 medications; (2) how social COVID-19 medication discussions were related to existing model estimates of daily cases during that period; (3) what the diversified themes and topics were and how they changed and developed from November 1 to December 31, 2022; and (4) which topics about COVID-19 medications were focused on by mainstream and self-media accounts during the exit. The answers to these questions could help us better understand the consequences of exit strategies and explore the utilities of Sina Weibo data for future infoveillance studies. METHODS: Using a scrapper for data retrieval and the structural topic modeling (STM) algorithm for analysis, this study built 3 topic models (all data, before a policy change, and after a policy change) of relevant discussions on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. We compared topic distributions against existing estimates of daily cases and between models before and after the change. We also compared proportions of weibos published by mainstream versus self-media accounts over time on different topics. RESULTS: We found that Weibo discussions shifted sharply from concerns of social risks (case tracking, governmental regulations, etc) to those of personal risks (symptoms, purchases, etc) surrounding COVID-19 infection after the exit from the zero-COVID policy. Weibo topics of "symptom sharing" and "purchase and shortage" of modern medicines correlated more strongly with existing susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) model estimates compared to "TCM formulae" and other topics. During the exit, mainstream accounts showed efforts to specifically engage in topics related to worldwide pandemic control policy comparison and regulations about import and reimbursement of medications. CONCLUSIONS: The exit from the zero-COVID policy in China was accompanied by a sudden increase in social media discussions about COVID-19 medications, the demand for which substantially increased after the exit. A large proportion of Weibo discussions were emotional and expressed increased risk concerns over medication shortage, unavailability, and delay in delivery. Topic keywords showed that self-medication was sometimes practiced alone or with unprofessional help from others, while mainstream accounts also tried to provide certain medication instructions. Of the 16 topics identified in all 3 STM models, only "symptom sharing" and "purchase and shortage" showed a considerable correlation with SEIR model estimates of daily cases. Future studies could consider topic exploration before conducting predictive infoveillance analysis, even with narrowly defined search criteria with Weibo data.

Introduction: Social media has developed exponentially over the last decade as a means for individuals and patients to connect to others and has provided a unique opportunity for physicians to provide broader information to the general public to attempt to positively modify health behavior. The purpose of this study was to assess the patient's perception of spinal cord injury (SCI) on social media. Methods: Instagram and Twitter social media platforms were analyzed to determine posts written by patients with SCI. The initial search for Instagram posts tagged with "#spinalcordinjury" yielded over 270,000 posts in April 2021. Posts pertaining to the patient's experience were retrospectively collected from January 2020 to April 2021. Twitter posts that included "#spinalcordinjury," "@spinalcordinjury," and "spinal cord injury" were retrospectively collected in April 2021. One hundred seventeen tweets were found that were directly from a patient with SCI. Themes associated with patients' experiences living with SCI were coded. Results: The most common theme on Instagram was spreading positivity and on Twitter was the appearance of the wheelchair (75.8% and 37.3%, respectively). Other common themes on Instagram were the appearance of a wheelchair (71.8%), recovery or rehabilitation (29.9%), and life satisfaction (29.0%). Prevalent themes on Twitter included spreading positivity (23.2%) and recovery or rehabilitation (21.3%). Conclusion: The prevalence of themes of positivity and awareness may indicate the utilization of social media as a support mechanism for patients living with SCI. Identification of prevalent themes is important for the holistic treatment of SCI survivors.

BACKGROUND: This research extends prior studies by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare on pandemic-related risk perception, concentrating on the role of trust in health authorities and its impact on public health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The paper aims to investigate variations in trust levels over time and across social media platforms, as well as to further explore 12 subcategories of political mistrust. It seeks to understand the dynamics of political trust, including mistrust accumulation, fluctuations over time, and changes in topic relevance. Additionally, the study aims to compare qualitative research findings with those obtained through computational methods. METHODS: Data were gathered from a large-scale data set consisting of 13,629 Twitter and Facebook posts from 2020 to 2023 related to COVID-19. For analysis, a fine-tuned FinBERT model with an 80% accuracy rate was used for predicting political mistrust. The BERTopic model was also used for superior topic modeling performance. RESULTS: Our preliminary analysis identifies 43 mistrust-related topics categorized into 9 major themes. The most salient topics include COVID-19 mortality, coping strategies, polymerase chain reaction testing, and vaccine efficacy. Discourse related to mistrust in authority is associated with perceptions of disease severity, willingness to adopt health measures, and information-seeking behavior. Our findings highlight that the distinct user engagement mechanisms and platform features of Facebook and Twitter contributed to varying patterns of mistrust and susceptibility to misinformation during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: The study highlights the effectiveness of computational methods like natural language processing in managing large-scale engagement and misinformation. It underscores the critical role of trust in health authorities for effective risk communication and public compliance. The findings also emphasize the necessity for transparent communication from authorities, concluding that a holistic approach to public health communication is integral for managing health crises effectively.

BACKGROUND: The increasing integration of digital technologies into daily life has spurred a growing body of research in the field of digital psychology. This research has shed light on the potential benefits and drawbacks of digital technologies for mental health and well-being. However, the intricate relationship between technology and psychology remains largely unexplored. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of mindfulness-based mobile apps on university students' anxiety, loneliness, and well-being. Additionally, it sought to explore participants' perceptions of the addictiveness of these apps. METHOD: The research utilized a multi-phase approach, encompassing a correlational research method, a pretest-posttest randomized controlled trial, and a qualitative case study. Participants were segmented into three subsets: correlations (n = 300), treatment (n = 60), and qualitative (n = 20). Data were gathered from various sources, including the social anxiety scale, well-being scale, social media use integration scale, and an interview checklist. Quantitative data was analyzed using Pearson correlation, multiple regression, and t-tests, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. RESULTS: The study uncovered a significant correlation between social media use and the variables under investigation. Moreover, the treatment involving mindfulness-based mobile apps led to a reduction in students' anxiety and an enhancement of their well-being. Notably, participants held various positive perceptions regarding the use of these apps. IMPLICATIONS: The findings of this research hold both theoretical and practical significance for the field of digital psychology. They provide insight into the potential of mindfulness-based mobile apps to positively impact university students' mental health and well-being. Additionally, the study underscores the need for further exploration of the intricate dynamics between technology and psychology in an increasingly digital world.
