INTRODUCTION: Promoting healthy ageing is a global priority. Active Participation Centres are potentially key in fostering psychosocial and emotional health, contributing to a fulfilling and active lifestyle for older adults. AIMS: The study explores self-perceived health, perceptions of sociocultural participation, emotions that emerged when sociocultural participation, and preferences among older adults engaged in community socio-cultural activities from an Active Participation Centre. METHODS: We realised a hermeneutic study; interviews with nine older participants were conducted. Hermeneutic considerations were employed for data analysis. RESULTS: Findings reveal the centre's significance as a therapeutic space, positively influencing emotional well-being, fostering social connections, and offering diverse activity preferences. CONCLUSION: This study underscores the nuanced interplay between sociocultural engagement and self-perceived health, emphasising the need for holistic approaches to promote well-being among older adults attending Active Participation Centres.

BACKGROUND: Social psychoneuroimmunology suggests an interplay between social deficits (loneliness and isolation) and chronic inflammation, but the direction of these relationships remains unclear. We estimated the reciprocal associations of social deficits and social engagement with levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), compared the consistency of the findings depending on the biological sampling method used, and examined the modifying role of phenotypic and genotypic depression. METHODS: We used longitudinal nationally representative data from the US (Health and Retirement Study, 3 waves, 2006-16) and England (English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, 4 waves, 2004-18). Loneliness, social isolation, and social engagement were self-reported. CRP was measured using dried blood spots (US) and venous blood samples (England). Cross-lagged panel models were fitted and tested interactions with phenotypic depression (above-threshold depressive symptom scores) and genotypic depression (polygenic score for major depressive disorder). RESULTS: We included 15,066 participants (mean age = 66.1 years, SD = 9.8) in the US and 10,290 (66.9 years, SD = 10.5) in England. We found reciprocal associations between loneliness and CRP using dried blood spots and venous blood samples. Higher CRP predicted higher subsequent loneliness and higher loneliness predicted elevated CRP. Both phenotypic and genotypic depression modified this reciprocal association. There were also reciprocal associations for social engagement in venous blood samples: higher CRP predicted lower social engagement and greater social engagement predicted lower subsequent CRP. Associations between social isolation and CRP were inconsistent and unidirectional. CONCLUSIONS: Loneliness may increase chronic inflammation, whereas social engagement may reduce inflammation. As these relationships were reciprocal, there may be a loop between inflammation, loneliness, and social engagement. This loop was stronger in those with depression or at high genetic risk for major depressive disorder. This relationship for loneliness was present in both blood sampling methods despite contrasting methods of CRP measurement, indicating that the finding is not attributable to measurement bias in biomarkers.

INTRODUCTION: Promoting individuals' health across different life spans has always been key to a holistic nursing practice. Seniors are a diverse population who go through many physical and mental changes as they age. During the last decade, assisted living facilities (ALFs) have dramatically increased in numbers to provide care and living services in a home-like environment. AIM: The aim of this descriptive exploratory study was to explore the quality of life as perceived by seniors who reside in assisted living facilities (ALFs). DESIGN: This study utilized a descriptive exploratory design to investigate the quality of life of seniors living in ALFs. METHODS: Seventeen residents from two ALFs were interviewed to gather their perspectives on the quality of their lives while living in an ALF. The interviews were conducted by the researcher and were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Three major themes surfaced from residents' descriptions: 'physical environment', 'social environment' and 'home-like atmosphere'. The quality of life in ALFs was found to be predominantly an outcome of the exchange between the personal capability of residents to adapt to changes and the capacity of the facility to meet residents' diverse needs. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Participants who discussed their quality of life in ALFs provided profound insights into this aspect of their lives. The findings from this study can potentially enlighten ALF stakeholders and enhance the quality of life for seniors residing in these facilities.

Chronic oxidative stress has been consistently linked to age-related diseases, conditions, and degenerative syndromes. Specifically, the brain is the organ that significantly contributes to declining quality of life in ageing. Since the body cannot completely counteract the detrimental effects of oxidative stress, nutraceuticals' antioxidant properties have received significant attention in recent years. This study assesses the potential health benefits of a novel combination of glutathione, vitamin D3, and N-acetylcysteine. To examine the combination's absorption and biodistribution and confirm that it has no harmful effects, the bioavailability of the mixture was first evaluated in a 3D model that mimicked the intestinal barrier. Further analyses on the blood-brain barrier was conducted to determine the antioxidant effects of the combination in the nervous system. The results show that the combination reaches the target and successfully crosses the blood-brain and intestinal barriers, demonstrating enhanced advantages on the neurological system, such as a reduction (about 10.5%) in inflammation and enhancement in cell myelination (about 20.4%) and brain tropism (about 18.1%) compared to the control. The results support the cooperative effect of N-acetylcysteine, vitamin D3, and glutathione to achieve multiple health benefits, outlining the possibility of an alternative nutraceutical approach.

Inefficient glucose metabolism and decreased ATP production in the brain are linked to ageing, cognitive decline, and neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). This study employed thermodynamic analysis to assess the effect of fish oil supplementation on glucose metabolism in ageing brains. Data from previous studies on glucose metabolism in the aged human brain and grey mouse lemur brains were examined. The results demonstrated that Omega-3 fish oil supplementation in grey mouse lemurs increased entropy generation and decreased Gibbs free energy across all brain regions. Specifically, there was a 47.4% increase in entropy generation and a 47.4 decrease in Gibbs free energy in the whole brain, indicating improved metabolic efficiency. In the human model, looking at the specific brain regions, supplementation with Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) reduced the entropy generation difference between elderly and young individuals in the cerebellum and particular parts of the brain cortex, namely the anterior cingulate and occipital lobe, with 100%, 14.29%, and 20% reductions, respectively. The Gibbs free energy difference was reduced only in the anterior cingulate by 60.64%. This research underscores that the application of thermodynamics is a comparable and powerful tool in comprehending the dynamics and metabolic intricacies within the brain.

The microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum (PT) is distinguished by its rich nutrient profile, characterized by well-documented neuroprotective activities, including fucoxanthin (FX), a major carotenoid and polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 PUFA). The current study aims to evaluate the protective effects of a standardized extract of PT (Mi136) containing 2% FX on cognitive function, oxidative stress, and inflammation parameters in a mouse model of accelerated aging. Seventy-two (72) male mice were randomly assigned to the blank control group (BC), negative control group (NC), and four similar microalgae extract of PT groups (branded as BrainPhyt™) with different human equivalent doses to evaluate potential dose-response effects. From day 01 to day 51, mice in the BC group were injected with a 0.9% normal saline solution, while mice in all other groups were subcutaneously injected with D-galactose (D-Gal) at a dose of 150 mg/kg once per day, five days per week. Results indicated that, for the three higher microalgae extract of PT dose groups, spatial cognitive function, swim latency, and step-through latency impairments induced by chronic D-Gal intoxication were significantly and fully inhibited, with mean values similar to those in the BC group during each day of testing. Similar benefits were observed in biochemical analysis, specifically regarding brain and plasma levels of lipid peroxidation, TNF-α, and IL-6 markers. These data underscore the positive effects of a standardized extract of PT containing 2% FX on cognitive function parameters such as spatial working memory, long-term memory, and short-term memory through the regulation of oxidative stress and inflammation pathways.

During ageing, the permeability of the intestinal barrier increases, the integrity of the intestinal barrier decreases, and the physiology of intestinal cells changes. Furthermore, intestinal inflammation and excessive oxidative stress are both likely to cause systemic diseases. Ginseng oligopeptides have a positive significant effect in terms of improving human health and delaying ageing, but their role in the ageing of the intestine has not been studied much. In our experiment, we constructed a gut-on-a-chip model and induced senescence of the chip with H2O2 so as to explore the effects of ginseng oligopeptides on the senescent intestine. The experimental results showed that ginseng oligopeptides had no obvious effects on the integrity of the intestine, including the TEER value and the expression of tight junction proteins. However, ginseng oligopeptides might have other positive effects, such as inhibiting excessive cell proliferation, promoting mucin secretion, and increasing the antioxidant capacity of the intestine, to improve intestinal health.

A comparative study between Nitrogen (N2) and Argon (Ar) plasma is carried out to investigate its effect on surface morphology, hydrophilicity, permeate flux and ageing of cellulose nitrate polymeric membranes in the present work. Langmuir probe and Optical Emission Spectroscopy are used to characterize the plasma. The SEM analysis reveals the noticeable macro-void creations and pore enlargement for both N2 and Ar plasma. The AFM analysis shows a higher surface roughness for Ar plasma treatment as compared to N2 plasma treatment. XPS analysis confirms the changes in the polymer matrix along with the incorporation of various functional groups on the membrane surface as a result of the plasma treatment. A better hydrophilic nature with prolonged plasma treatment is observed for Ar plasma as compared to N2 plasma treatment. The present results show a higher permeate flux with a high rejection rate for Ar plasma treatment in comparison to N2 plasma, which might be due to the pore size and pore area enlargement of the membrane. The hydrophobic recovery for both the plasma-treated membranes is found significant for the initial ageing period of 7 days and found almost stable in nature after 7 days. A diffusion-based theoretical model is developed to study the hydrophobic recovery of plasma-treated membranes. A strong alignment between experimental and theoretical results is observed in the present work. The Cake Filtration model, derived from the Hermia model, is identified as the most suitable model for describing the fouling mechanisms for the present work.

Although Japan's healthcare delivery system is highly regarded internationally, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed its structural problems. Behind these issues lies a history of medical care provisions supported mainly by an unrestricted, "free labeling" system, and independently financed private hospitals. In addition, patients have a high degree of freedom of choice under the Japanese medical insurance system, making it difficult to provide comprehensive and continuous health management from initial diagnosis and treatment (primary care), specialized treatment, to supporting a return to home, providing nursing care and lifestyle support. As Japan becomes a "super-aged" society with individuals over 65 making up over 30% of the population, the nature of medical care will have to undergo major changes. Medical care's basic function must still be the treatment and cure of patients, but the system will also have to provide support. That means conceiving of care in a way that treats a person's life with dignity and does not sacrifice life for treatment. The implementation of a family doctor function and the clarification of the functions and roles of small and medium-sized community-based hospitals that support this function, as well as the establishment of a community comprehensive care network with multidisciplinary cooperation that goes beyond medical care, should also be set forth in future regional medical care plans.

Malnutrition affects approximately one quarter of UK adults aged 65 years and over. As the global demographic shift continues, malnutrition is expected to increase. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are used both to prevent and to treat malnutrition. However, their effectiveness is compromised by poor adherence, and it is not well understood what contributes to this. Therefore, the current research was designed to explore ONS adherence from the parallel perspectives of ONS as a prescribed "medication" and as a food supplement/substitute. Eighteen older adults (13F, 5M; mean age = 73.4 yr; range: 70-80 yr) participated in focus groups (three in-person and one online), to investigate experiences of taking prescribed medications, including dietary supplements, and what should be factors to consider in supporting regular intake of ONS for trial development, as well as any potential improvements to products. Focus group sessions were recorded and then transcribed. Thematic Analysis was applied to the transcripts by the first author, and themes were discussed in depth, using exemplar quotes from participants. Five dominant themes were identified from the data: Disgust, Palatability and Acceptance; End-of-Life Care; Resistance to Medicines; Rituals and Reminders; and Real Food Displacement. Nutritional supplements were characterised as "disgusting", "manufactured", and associated with serious, chronic illness, as well as end-of-life care, in contrast to probiotics which were linked with health and wellness. The sweet taste of ONS was identified as a barrier to intake, given that it is generally associated with a signal to stop eating, and low hunger. As a group, participants tried to "avoid taking medicines", and viewed the need to have them negatively, yet most regularly took prescribed medication and/or vitamin supplements. Participants identified several, rituals and reminders to take medicines, including meal-based, or time-of-day-based prompts (e.g., before, with or after meals). To improve adherence, savoury products were suggested, as well as a more person-centred approach to individual nutritional needs and preferences. Overall, the group discussion mainly identified barriers to intake, but that improving taste, adding to "real food" (not replacing meals), and offering variety of flavour and form (e.g., savoury soups as well as sweet drinks) could be included in future trials to improve appeal and therefore intake. Future work should continue to explore how best to formulate, market and/or prescribe ONS, and how this might vary for malnutrition prevention vs treatment strategies.

Introducción Las quejas subjetivas de memoria (QSM) pueden ser una señal inicial de un posterior deterioro de las funciones cognitivas. Sin embargo, no se han publicado estudios poblacionales cubriendo toda España para conocer la prevalencia de las QSM. El objetivo del presente estudio fue conocer la prevalencia de las QSM en la población general residente en España >50 años y, también qué actuaciones se llevaban a cabo al respecto. Materiales y métodos Se realizaron entrevistas mediante un cuestionario online/Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) a una muestra representativa a nivel nacional >50 años. La encuesta constaba de 34 ítems divididos en 2 bloques. Se consideró presencia de QSM cuando en la pregunta 1 el sujeto contestaba que ‘Sí’ tenía algún problema de memoria. Resultados Se entrevistó a 2.300 personas (53,7% mujeres; 23,9% ≥75 años). El 31% contestaron que consideraban que tenían un problema de memoria (sin diferencias entre sexos, media de tiempo con problemas de memoria de 3,0 años). Se observó mayor prevalencia de QSM en ≥75 años (44%). El 90% no incluían ningún alimento específico en su dieta para sus problemas de memoria, y tampoco estaban tomando productos farmacéuticos, complementos de la dieta o suplementos nutricionales (92%). El 78% de los entrevistados con QSM no han consultado a profesionales sanitarios por sus problemas de memoria. Conclusiones Las QSM tienen una prevalencia considerable en nuestro medio, afectando a casi un tercio de los individuos >50 años. La mayoría de los entrevistados con quejas de memoria no buscó el consejo/recomendación de profesionales sanitarios con respecto a las mismas. (AU)


Introduction Subjective memory complaints (SMC) might be an early sign of further deterioration in cognitive functions. However, no population studies have been published covering all Spain to determine the SMC prevalence. The objective of the present study was to determine the SMC prevalence in the general population residing in Spain >50 years of age and also which related actions were done. Materials and methods Interviews were conducted with a nationally representative sample >50 years of age using an online/computer assisted web interview (CAWI) questionnaire. The survey consisted of 34 items divided into two blocks. Presence of SMC was considered when in question 1 the subject answered that “Yes” he had some memory problem. Results Two thousand three hundred people (53.7% women; 23.9% ≥75 years old) were interviewed. 31% answered that they considered they had a memory problem (no differences between sexes, mean time with memory problems of 3.0 years). A higher prevalence of SMC was observed in ≥75 years old (44%). 90% did not include any specific foods in their diet for their memory problems, neither were taking any pharmaceuticals, diet supplements or nutritional supplements (92%). 78% of those interviewed with SMC have not consulted health professionals for their memory problems. Conclusions SMC are considerably prevalent in our environment affecting almost a third of people ≥50 years of age. Most of the interviewees with SMC did not go to health professionals to manage their SMC. (AU)

The aggregation of blood platelets is the pivotal step that leads to thrombosis. The risk of thrombotic events increases with age. Available data suggest that minerals taken with diet can affect the course of thrombosis. However, little is known about the relationship between platelet aggregability and mineral intake with diet among elderly people. Thus, we evaluated the associations between the reactivities of platelets to arachidonic acid, collagen or ADP and the estimated quantities of minerals consumed as a part of the daily diet in 246 subjects aged 60-65 years (124 men and 122 women). The found simple (not-adjusted) Spearman's rank negative correlations are as follows: 1. arachidonate-dependent aggregation and the amounts of potassium, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, copper and manganese; 2. collagen-dependent aggregation and the amounts of potassium, phosphorus, iron and zinc; and 3. ADP-dependent aggregation and the amounts of potassium, phosphorus and zinc. The negative associations between ADP-dependent platelet reactivity and the amount of potassium, phosphorus and zinc and between collagen-dependent aggregability and the amount of phosphorus were also noted after adjusting for a bunch of cardiovascular risk factors. Overall, in older subjects, the intake of minerals with diet is negatively related to blood platelet reactivity, especially in response to ADP. Diet fortification with some minerals may possibly reduce the thrombotic risk among elderly patients.

The rapid pace of population ageing worldwide has prompted the need to better understand the ageing process. The current study, titled the Longitudinal Follow-up of the CHI (LFC) study, was a 3-year follow-up study of an earlier study titled the Community Health and Intergenerational (CHI) study. The LFC study looked to examine longitudinal changes in their cognitive functioning and psychosocial outcomes across the 3-year period. Additionally, the current study built upon the earlier CHI study by collecting neuroimaging data and exploring the long-term effects of non-pharmacological interventions, which were not examined in the prior study. A total of 653 community-dwelling participants from the baseline CHI study cohort were invited to take part in the LFC study, where they underwent a battery of neuropsychological assessments, psychosocial questionnaires, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan and a voice recording segment. The current study would holistically track longitudinal changes in cognitive functioning and psychosocial outcomes in the ageing population in Singapore. Unique associations between linguistics and neuroimaging data alongside cognitive and psychosocial outcomes would be explored. This study also serves to guide the development of new interventions for older adults and assist in improving the well-being of the local and global ageing population.

Unlike other vitamins, vitamin D3 is synthesised in skin cells in the body. Vitamin D3 has been known as a bone-related hormone. Recently, however, it has been considered as an immune vitamin. Vitamin D3 deficiency influences the onset of a variety of diseases. Vitamin D3 regulates the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) through binding to vitamin D receptors (VDRs) in immune cells. Since blood levels of vitamin D3 (25-OH-D3) were low in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, there has been growing interest in the importance of vitamin D3 to maintaining a healthy condition. On the other hand, phytochemicals are compounds derived from plants with over 7000 varieties and have various biological activities. They mainly have health-promoting effects and are classified as terpenoids, carotenoids, flavonoids, etc. Flavonoids are known as the anti-inflammatory compounds that control TNF-α production. Chronic inflammation is induced by the continuous production of TNF-α and is the fundamental cause of diseases like obesity, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, heart and brain diseases, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer. In addition, the ageing process is induced by chronic inflammation. This review explains the cooperative effects of vitamin D3 and phytochemicals in the suppression of inflammatory responses, how it balances the natural immune response, and its link to anti-ageing effects. In addition, vitamin D3 and phytochemicals synergistically contribute to anti-ageing by working with ageing-related genes. Furthermore, prevention of ageing processes induced by the chronic inflammation requires the maintenance of healthy gut microbiota, which is related to daily dietary habits. In this regard, supplementation of vitamin D3 and phytochemicals plays an important role. Recently, the association of the prevention of the non-disease condition called "ME-BYO" with the maintenance of a healthy condition has been an attractive regimen, and the anti-ageing effect discussed here is important for a healthy and long life.

As the ageing population grows and forms a significant category of over 65s in many societies, along with it comes the risk of developing physical and psychological degenerative changes. This presents many challenges for health and social care services in not only identifying those at risk but also managing that risk to try to preserve health and independence for as long as possible. Screening for frailty has supported services to identify those that may be at risk of hospitalisation, requiring long term care or support services at home in older age. Frailty can be exacerbated by the risk of nutritional deficiencies and more severe malnutrition. Therefore, screening for frailty should also include a nutritional assessment, which can be supported by a recognition of the need for nutritional support along with other holistic frailty management.

PURPOSE: As people living with thalidomide embryopathy (TE) are now entering their seventh decade, we examine the impact of ageing and the prevalence of comorbid health conditions reported in holistic needs assessments (HNAs) by individuals with TE, compare it with an age-matched sample of the general population, and explore the relationship between comorbidities and TE pattern of impairment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The HNA categories were mapped and compared to those of the Health Survey for England (HSE) and analysed across four impairment groups (A-D). RESULTS: 94% (392/415) of individuals with TE residing in the UK participated in the HNA and consented to a secondary analysis of the data. Less than 2% (5/392) reported no comorbidities; 94% reported nervous system problems; including pain, pins and needles and numbness. Individuals with TE reported a significantly greater number of health comorbidities, including musculoskeletal problems, than the age-matched HSE population. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with TE report significantly more health and well-being concerns than the general population of a similar age. Long-term monitoring is needed to ensure that support and rehabilitation services can meet their evolving needs.


People living with thalidomide's teratogenic effects are now entering their seventh decade.As they age, these individuals experience the long-term consequences linked to over-use of certain joints, including musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain.An understanding of the lived experience of TE with increasing age has the potential to inform the planning and provision of adequate and appropriate rehabilitation services moving forward.Adoption of a holistic approach to rehabilitation could help people living with TE to maintain functional independence as they enter their seventh decade.

BACKGROUND: Cellular senescence has been regarded as a therapeutic target for ageing and age-related diseases. Several senotherapeutic agents have been proposed, including compounds derived from natural products which hold the translational potential to promote healthy ageing. This systematic review examined the association of dietary ingredients with cellular senescence in animals and humans, with an intent to identify dietary ingredients with senotherapeutic potential. METHODS: This systematic review was registered at PROSPERO International prospective register of systematic reviews (Reg #: CRD42022338885). The databases PubMed and Embase were systematically searched for key terms related to cellular senescence, senescence markers, diets, nutrients and bioactive compounds. Intervention and observational studies on human and animals investigating the effects of dietary ingredients via oral administration on cellular senescence load were included. The SYRCLE's risk of bias tool and Cochrane risk of bias tool v2.0 were used to assess the risk of bias for animal and human studies respectively. RESULTS: Out of 5707 identified articles, 83 articles consisting of 78 animal studies and 5 human studies aimed to reduce cellular senescence load using dietary ingredients. In animal studies, the most-frequently used senescence model was normative ageing (26 studies), followed by D-galactose-induced models (17 studies). Resveratrol (8 studies), vitamin E (4 studies) and soy protein isolate (3 studies) showed positive effects on reducing the level of senescence markers such as p53, p21, p16 and senescence-associated ß-galactosidase in various tissues of physiological systems. In three out of five human studies, ginsenoside Rg1 had no positive effect on reducing senescence in muscle tissues after exercise. The risk of bias for both animal and human studies was largely unclear. CONCLUSION: Resveratrol, vitamin E and soy protein isolate are promising senotherapeutics studied in animal models. Studies testing dietary ingredients with senotherapeutic potential in humans are limited and translation is highly warranted.

The ageing process is associated with alterations of systemic trace element (TE) homeostasis increasing the risk, e.g. neurodegenerative diseases. Here, the impact of long-term modulation of dietary intake of copper, iron, selenium, and zinc was investigated in murine cerebellum. Four- and 40-wk-old mice of both sexes were supplied with different amounts of those TEs for 26 wk. In an adequate supply group, TE concentrations were in accordance with recommendations for laboratory mice while suboptimally supplied animals received only limited amounts of copper, iron, selenium, and zinc. An additional age-adjusted group was fed selenium and zinc in amounts exceeding recommendations. Cerebellar TE concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry. Furthermore, the expression of genes involved in TE transport, DNA damage response, and DNA repair as well as selected markers of genomic stability [8-oxoguanine, incision efficiency toward 8-oxoguanine, 5-hydroxyuracil, and apurinic/apyrimidinic sites and global DNA (hydroxy)methylation] were analysed. Ageing resulted in a mild increase of iron and copper concentrations in the cerebellum, which was most pronounced in the suboptimally supplied groups. Thus, TE changes in the cerebellum were predominantly driven by age and less by nutritional intervention. Interestingly, deviation from adequate TE supply resulted in higher manganese concentrations of female mice even though the manganese supply itself was not modulated. Parameters of genomic stability were neither affected by age, sex, nor diet. Overall, this study revealed that suboptimal dietary TE supply does not substantially affect TE homeostasis in the murine cerebellum.

BACKGROUND: Selenium is an essential trace mineral. The main function of selenoprotein P (SELENOP) is to transport selenium but it has also been ascribed anti-oxidative effects. METHODS: To assess the association of repeated measurements of serum SELENOP concentration with all-cause and cause-specific mortality serum SELENOP was measured at baseline and 5-year follow-up in 7,186 and 4,164 participants of the ESTHER study, a German population-based cohort aged 50-74 years at baseline. RESULTS: During 17.3 years of follow-up, 2,126 study participants (30%) died. The relationship of serum SELENOP concentration with all-cause mortality was L-shaped, with mortality being significantly higher at SELENOP concentrations < 4.1 mg/L, which is near the bottom tertile's cut-off (4.2 mg/L). All-cause mortality of participants in the bottom SELENOP tertile was significantly increased compared to subjects in the top tertile (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.35 [1.21-1.50]). SELENOP in the bottom tertile was further associated with increased cardiovascular mortality (1.24 [1.04-1.49]), cancer mortality (1.31 [1.09-1.58]), respiratory disease mortality (2.06 [1.28-3.32]) and gastrointestinal disease mortality (2.04 [1.25-3.32]). The excess risk of all-cause mortality for those in the bottom SELENOP tertile was more than twice as strong in men as in women (interaction of SELENOP and sex; p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: In this large cohort study, serum SELENOP concentration was inversely associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Consistent inverse associations with multiple mortality outcomes might be explained by an impaired selenium transport and selenium deficiency in multiple organs. Trials testing the efficacy of selenium supplements in subjects with low baseline SELENOP concentration are needed. The bulk of research on microfiltered seawater (SW) is based on its short-term effects. However, the long-term physiological adaptations to combining SW and resistance training (RT) are unknown. This study aimed to analyse the impact of an RT program using elastic bands combined with SW intake on hepatic biomarkers, inflammation, oxidative stress, and blood pressure in post-menopausal women. Ninety-three women voluntarily participated (age: 70 ± 6.26 years; body mass index: 22.05 ± 3.20 kg/m2; Up-and-Go Test: 6.66 ± 1.01 s). RT consisted of six exercises (32 weeks, 2 days/week). Nonsignificant differences were reported for hepatic biomarkers except for a reduction in glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) in both RT groups (RT + SW: p = 0.003, ES = 0.51; RT + Placebo: p = 0.012, ES = 0.36). Concerning oxidative stress, vitamin D increased significantly in RT + SW (p = 0.008, ES = 0.25). Regarding inflammation, interleukin 6 significantly decreased (p = 0.003, ES = 0.69) in RT + SW. Finally, systolic blood pressure significantly decreased in both RT groups (RT + placebo: p < 0.001, ES = 0.79; RT + SW: p < 0.001, ES = 0.71) as did diastolic blood pressure in both SW groups (RT + SW: p = 0.002, ES = 0.51; CON + SW: p = 0.028, ES = 0.50). Therefore, RT + SW or SW alone are safe strategies in the long term with no influences on hepatic and oxidative stress biomarkers. Additionally, SW in combination with RT positively influences vitamin D levels, inflammation, and blood pressure in older women.
