OBJECTIVES: Constipation is the infrequent or difficult emission of hard, dry faeces and is a common digestive condition in cats. Psyllium is a low-fermentable fibre, with soluble and insoluble components and water-holding properties. It forms a mucilaginous gel with water and is used for the symptomatic treatment of constipation in various species. This study evaluated the effect of dietary psyllium on faecal characteristics in cats. METHODS: Healthy neutered adult cats (six female and three male, aged 3.3-4.4 years) were consecutively fed a dry extruded diet containing either 6% psyllium (test) or 6% cellulose (control) for 10 days each. During the last 3 days (the collection days) of both feeding periods, bowel movements and faecal scores were recorded, and faeces were collected to measure wet weight and moisture. The statistical analysis used linear mixed models with diet, day and their interaction as fixed effects and animal as a random term. RESULTS: The test diet was associated with significantly more bowel movements per day over 3 days (P = 0.0052) and on collection day 2 (P = 0.0229) than the control diet. The mean faecal score was higher (softer faeces) over all three collection days (P <0.0001) and on collection days 1, 2 and 3 (P = 0.0011, P = 0.0349, P = 0.0003, respectively) for the test diet vs the control diet; the total faecal wet weight (P = 0.0003) and faecal moisture (%) were also higher (P = 0.0426) for the test diet. Faeces associated with the test diet often had a dry shell and soft interior, which increased the faecal score. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Psyllium promoted more bowel movements and higher faecal moisture and faecal score in healthy cats, consistent with a previous uncontrolled clinical trial in constipated cats. Together, the studies support the use of dietary psyllium for managing cats with constipation.

This study aimed to determine the impact of a fiber supplement on body weight and composition in individuals with obesity with specific genetic polymorphisms. It involved 112 adults with obesity, each with at least one minor allele in the FTO, LEP, LEPR, or MC4R polymorphism. Participants were randomized to receive either a fiber supplement (glucomannan, inulin, and psyllium) or a placebo for 180 days. The experimental group showed significant reductions in body weight (treatment difference: -4.9%; 95% CI: -6.9% to -2.9%; p < 0.01) and BMI (treatment difference: -1.4 kg/m2; 95% CI: -1.7 to -1.2; p < 0.01) compared to placebo. Further significant decreases in fat mass (treatment difference: -13.0%; 95% CI: -14.4 to -11.7; p < 0.01) and visceral fat rating (treatment difference: -1.3; 95% CI: -1.6 to -1.0; p < 0.01) were noted. Homozygous minor allele carriers experienced greater decreases in body weight (treatment difference: -3.2%; 95% CI: -4.9% to -1.6%; p < 0.01) and BMI (treatment difference: -1.2 kg/m2; 95% CI: -2.0 to -0.4; p < 0.01) compared to heterozygous allele carriers. These carriers also had a more significant reduction in fat mass (treatment difference: -9.8%; 95% CI: -10.6 to -9.1; p < 0.01) and visceral fat rating (treatment difference: -0.9; 95% CI: -1.3 to -0.5; p < 0.01). A high incidence of gastrointestinal events was reported in the experimental group (74.6%), unlike the placebo group, which reported no side effects. Dietary supplementation with glucomannan, inulin, and psyllium effectively promotes weight loss and improves body composition in individuals with obesity, particularly those with specific genetic polymorphisms.

Present investigation deals with the synthesis of psyllium based copolymeric hydrogels and evaluation of their physiochemical and biomedical properties. These copolymers have been prepared by grafting of poly(vinyl phosphonic acid) (poly (VPA)) and poly(acrylamide) (poly(AAm)) onto psyllium in the presence of crosslinker N,N-methylene bis acrylamide (NNMBA). These copolymers [psyllium-poly(VPA-co-AAm)-cl-NNMBA] were characterized by field emission-scanning electron micrographs (FE-SEM), electron dispersion X-ray analysis (EDAX), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)- differential thermal analysis (DTG). FESEM, AFM and XRD demonstrated heterogeneous morphology with a rough surface and an amorphous nature. Diffusion of ornidazole occurred with a non-Fickian diffusion mechanism, and the release profile data was fitted in the Korsemeyer-Peppas kinetic model. Biochemical analysis of hydrogel properties confirmed the blood-compatible nature during blood-polymer interactions and revealed haemolysis value 3.95 ± 0.05 %. The hydrogels exhibited mucoadhesive character during biomembrane-polymer interactions and demonstrated detachment force = 99.0 ± 0.016 mN. During 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl reagent (DPPH) assay, free radical scavenging was observed 37.83 ± 3.64 % which illustrated antioxidant properties of hydrogels. Physiological and biomedical properties revealed that these hydrogels could be explored for drug delivery uses.

Gel forming dietary fibre like psyllium (PS) is effective in slowing down rate of digestion as well as absorption of glucose thereby reducing the postprandial glucose level and hence is used to develop functional foods for diabetic patients. The fortification level is however limited which otherwise elicit unwanted rheological response and poor sensorial quality in final product. In the present study this limitation was overcome by improving the functionality of the fibre by gamma radiation processing of the polysaccharides. We assessed the changes in rheological properties of radiation processed PS (RPPS) at different doses which enabled us to optimise the irradiation dose and levels of fortification of the RPPS in wheat flour for preparation of Indian unleavened bread (chapati). We observed that PS processed at a dose of 25 kGy could be incorporated to a level as high as 14 % in wheat flour yielding a sensorially better product compared to unfortified wheat flour. Further, the most striking effect observed for RPPS fortified chapati was reduction in the release of glucose upon subjecting to simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Finally, clinical and in vitro fermentation studies also confirmed a low GI value and high gastrointestinal tolerance of RPPS fortified chapati.

The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis regarding the effect of recommended (6.5 mg/kg) or enhanced (13 mg/kg) level of CuNPs in the diet in combination with different types of dietary fibre-cellulose (control), inulin, pectin or psyllium-on selected biological parameters of intestinal integrity in rats. Rats were randomly divided into 10 groups. The first two groups were fed a control diet that contained cellulose, and a mineral mixture with standard or enhanced content of CuCO3. Experimental groups were fed a diet supplemented with CuNPs (6.5 or 13 mg/kg) and combined with different types of fibre (cellulose, pectin, inulin or psyllium). After the feeding period, blood and small intestine samples were collected for further analysis. Replacing CuCO3 by CuNPs in the diet positively reduced the level of lactic acid and apoptosis markers in the small intestine; however, it also resulted in the intensification of DNA oxidation. The most beneficial effect on DNA repair mechanisms is related to inulin, while pectin has the greatest ability to inhibit inflammatory processes that induce the apoptotic death of cells in the small intestine. Our results suggest that dietary fibre supplementation protects the small intestine against potentially harmful, oxidative effects of CuNPs by intensifying the intestinal barrier.

This study aimed to determine how the addition of psyllium fiber to steamed and roasted wheat-based flat dough pieces affected the in vitro starch digestibility. Wheat flour was replaced with 10% psyllium fiber in the preparation of fiber-enriched dough samples. Two distinct methods of heating were utilised: steaming (100 °C, 2 min & 10 min) and roasting (100 °C, 2 min & 250 °C, 2 min). Rapidly digestible starch (RDS) fractions reduced significantly in both steamed and roasted samples, whereas slowly digestible starch (SDS) fractions increased significantly only in samples roasted at 100 °C and steamed for 2 min. The roasted samples had a lower RDS fraction than the steamed samples only when fiber was added. This study demonstrated the effect of processing method, duration, temperature, formed structure, matrix and the addition of psyllium fiber on in vitro starch digestion by altering starch gelatinization, gluten network, and consequently enzyme access to substrates.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can cause gut microbiota dysbiosis and thus impair intestinal barrier function. Disruption of intestinal homeostasis facilitates the production of enterogenic toxins, which exacerbate CKD-induced uremic toxicity and inflammation. Dietary fiber, by targeting the gut-kidney axis, could be used for CKD treatment. Psyllium seed husk (PSH) extracted from the seeds of Plantago ovata contains highly branched, gel-forming arabinoxylan. Positive effects of PSH on host physiology have been demonstrated but whether it also acts on the microbial ecosystem in CKD patients is unknown. In this study, the effects of dietary PSH on the gut microbiota, intestinal barrier function, systemic inflammation, uremic toxins, and renal injury were investigated in 5/6 nephrectomy (5/6Nx) CKD rats. Blood, feces, and kidney and colon tissues were collected from PSH-treated and control rats and subjected to biochemical and histological analyses, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, and 16SrRNA sequencing. PSH supplementation reduced serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels, and attenuated renal tubular interstitial injury, in 5/6Nx rats. 16SrRNA sequencing showed that PSH improved the gut microbiota and intestinal barrier function in addition to down-regulating serum interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, and indoxyl sulfate levels. Together, these results demonstrate the potential of PSH supplementation for treating CKD, including by improving intestinal microecology, reducing uremic toxin levels and systemic inflammation, and delaying disease progression.

The article reflects the potential for correcting intestinal microbiota disorders in the complex therapy of patients with COVID-19. It has been noted that the inclusion of dietary fiber in the diet contributes to protection against disruption of the integrity of the intestinal barrier and may limit bacterial translocation into the systemic circulation. The possibility of using psyllium (Mucofalk) is reflected, the action of which is realized both through its sorption, cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory properties in viral lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, and through stimulation of the own beneficial intestinal microbiota. The paper presents studies of the prospects for the use of probiotics, synbiotics in the complex therapy of patients with COVID-19. Detailed data are provided on the mechanisms of the positive effect of short-chain fatty acid preparations on reducing the severity of the disease in patients with COVID-19. It was noted that taking the drug Zacofalk leads to a significant increase in its own butyrate-producing microbiota (Faecalibacterium prausnitzii) and suppression of the growth of opportunistic flora with pro-inflammatory activity. The results of a recent study are presented showing that in patients with a mild course of COVID infection with respiratory and intestinal symptoms, the administration of Zakofalk for 30 days (3 tablets per day) led to significantly faster stool normalization (by day 7), persistent normalization of the frequency and consistency of stools by the 21st day and a significantly more pronounced regression of bloating and abdominal pain, as well as a decrease in the risk of developing post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome.

Chronic constipation is highly prevalent worldwide and may be managed with two green or three gold kiwifruit daily. It is unknown whether a smaller standard serve of gold kiwifruit (two daily) is as effective in constipation management. The study aimed to improve chronic constipation with two gold kiwifruit and psyllium in lieu of a placebo daily over four weeks. Adult participants (18-65 years) with functional constipation (FC, n = 11), constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C, n = 13), and healthy controls (n = 32) were block-randomized to the treatment order: gold kiwifruit (2/day) or psyllium (fiber-matched, 7.5 g/day) for four weeks, followed by four weeks washout before crossover. Outcomes included alterations of Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) domains and weekly complete spontaneous bowel movements (CSBM) as part of a larger study. Both interventions reduced GSRS constipation domain scores in all subjects compared to baseline values (p = 0.004). All participants reported significantly more weekly CSBM (p = 0.014). Two gold kiwifruit decreased straining (p = 0.021). Two gold kiwifruit daily are as effective as fiber-matched psyllium in treating constipation in adults and should be considered as a treatment option.

In this study, a strategy involving psyllium husk powder (PHP) was proposed to alleviate the textural deterioration of protein gels under low-sodium conditions. Results revealed that myofibrillar protein (MP) in 0.3 M NaCl could accommodate more PHP to achieve better gels properties compared with that of 0.6 M NaCl. The 3 % addition of PHP could lessen the textural deterioration of gels at 0.3 M NaCl because of the insertion of PHP into the hydrophobic cavity of MP. Consequently, the reduction in protein viscoelasticity and the thermal stability of the head and tail of myosin improved. α-Helix structures unfolded, intermolecular forces formed, and proteins aggregated. Molecular docking predicted hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions as the main forces to stabilize the conformation of composites. Experiments further verified that hydrophobic interactions and disulfide bonds were the main forces that stabilized the structure of MP-PHP composite gels.

Gastrointestinal tract diseases are characterized by an imbalance in physiological functions, which may involve inflammatory and metabolic pathways and trigger chronic, multifactorial, and idiopathic inflammatory disorders. The association of probiotics with prebiotics has the potential to remedy these afflictive conditions, because they attenuate or even block the adhesion of pathogenic microorganisms in the enteric environment. This article highlights the importance of using probiotics associated with fibers from Psyllium as prebiotics to maintain a healthy intestinal microbiota. We also present the technologies and encapsulating materials involved in coating to increase the survival rate of these strains when exposed to the gastrointestinal tract. The importance of products containing probiotics and fibers from Psyllium as prebiotics becomes increasingly evident when there is a health bias. Emerging health challenges and advances in research will drive selective approaches in biotechnology to discover and evaluate new probiotics and prebiotics that can potentially contribute to human health.

Bone tissue engineering is an emerging technology that has been developed in recent years to address bone abnormalities by repairing, regenerating and replacing damaged/injured tissues. In present work, we report the fabrication and characterization of porous luffa-based composite scaffolds composed of Luffa cylindrica (sponge gourd) powder (LC)/hydroxyapatite (HA), psyllium husk (PH) and gelatin (G) in various combinations (w/v) i.e. 3% LC, 5% LC and control (C) (without luffa powder) by using freeze-drying method. The structural stability of the scaffolds was obtained after chemically crosslinking them with glutaraldehyde (GTA), which was identified via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The hydrophilic behavior of the samples was quantified by water contact angle measurements. The average pore size of the scaffolds was observed in a range of 20-240 µm. As per the obtained data, the apparent and effective porosities were estimated as ∼57.08 ± 4.38%, ∼50.58 ± 4.09%, ∼59.45 ± 1.60% and 51.37 ± 3.36%, 47.94 ± 4.57% and 53.09 ± 5.45% for 3% LC, 5% LC and control (C) scaffolds, respectively. The scaffolds were found to be noticeably stable for 50 days at 37 °C in a lysozyme solution. The liquid retention capacity of the scaffolds revealed that the luffa-based scaffolds gained lower retention capacity compared to the control (C) scaffold; indicating an increase in scaffold stiffness due to the addition of luffa. Compressive strength study demonstrated that the mechanical stability of the fabricated luffa-based scaffolds got increased significantly from ∼1.5 to ∼9.5 MPa, which is comparable to that of trabecular bone. In addition, proliferation and viability analysis of MG-63 osteoblast-like cells revealed a significant level of cellular compatibility i.e. approaching ∼64% proliferation by 6th day in vitro compared to control. Thus, the obtained results demonstrate that the fabricated novel luffa-based scaffolds exhibit good cytocompatibility, remarkable porosity and excellent mechanical strength comparable to native human bone. Therefore, we anticipate that the developed luffa-based scaffolds could be a promising candidate for bone tissue engineering applications.

Diabetes mellitus has become a major public health concern all over the world. Vildagliptin is one of the antidiabeticdrug that can overcome the existing problem of this prevalent disease. Present study aims to synthesize and investigate the role of vildagliptin-loaded core-shell nanoparticle of grafted psyllium and alginate (VG@P/A-NPs) in anti-diabetes application. FTIR, SEM, XRD, 13CNMR and zeta analyzer were used for characterization of the core-shell nanoparticles (VG@P/A-NPs). The synthesized acrylamide-grafted-psyllium was also optimized through varying grafting parameters such as acrylamide and ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) concentration, time and temperature to obtain the maximum yield of acrylamide-grafted-psyllium. Rheological analysis of pure psyllium, grafted psyllium and alginate were also performed. For biological studies, the first cytotoxicity of grafted psyllium and VG@P/A-NPs were examined on human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549 in which it was observed that VG@P/A-NPs did not exhibited any toxicity. The antidiabetic potential of VG@P/A-NPs was investigated by glucose uptake assay, using TNF-α induced insulin resistance skeletal cell model using mouse muscle L6 cell line. The insulin signaling impaired cell line displayed a highly significant (p < 0.0001) dose-dependent increase in glucose uptake after treatment with increasing doses of VG@P/A-NPs.The drug release behavior of VG@P/A-NPs was examined at various pH and the highest drug release (98 %) was obtained at pH (7.4). The drug release kinetic data was following the Higuchi (R2 = 0.9848) kinetic model, suggesting the release of drug from vildagliptin-loaded grafted psyllium-alginate core-shell nanoparticles (VG@P/A-NPs) as a square root of time-dependent process and diffusion controlled. This study provides an economical and environment-friendly approach towards the synthesis of VG@P/A-NPs with antidiabetes applications.

BACKGROUND: Safe and effective weight control strategies are needed to curtail the current obesity epidemic worldwide. Increasing dietary fibre has shown positive results with weight loss as well as in the reduction of metabolic syndrome risk factors. However, fibre can act as an inhibitor to the bioavailability of micronutrients in the gastrointestinal tract. While there is a substantial amount of scientific research into psyllium fibre, PolyGlycopleX (PGX®) is a novel fibre and as yet the effects of PGX® on micronutrient status is not well researched. AIM: To determine whether 3-months' supplementation with 15 g of psyllium or PGX® fibre daily affects micronutrient status of overweight and obese adults. METHODS: Overweight and obese individuals with a BMI between 25-40 kg/m2 and aged between 18 and 65 years, but otherwise healthy, were instructed to consume a 5 g sachet of psyllium, PGX® fibre or a rice flour placebo three times a day for 52 weeks as part of a larger long-term study. Blood sample data for the first 3 months were analysed for associations between serum micronutrient levels and psyllium fibre and/or PGX® supplements. RESULTS: No significant differences between fibre supplement groups and micronutrient status were found after 3 months at p > 0.05. Dietary intake of vitamin C was significantly lower for PGX® at 3 months compared to baseline and compared to control (p < 0.05). Folate was significantly lower in the control group after 3 months (p < 0.05). In the psyllium group, folate, sodium, zinc and magnesium intake decreased after 3 months (p < 0.05). A limitation of dietary intake data (tertiary measure) is the potential for inaccurate self-reporting, although reduced nutrient intake could be due to the satiating effect of dietary fibre. CONCLUSIONS: There were no significant between group differences in serum micronutrient concentrations after a 3-month psyllium fibre or PGX® supplementation intervention of 15 g per day. Fibre supplementation is unlikely to compromise the nutritional status of overweight and obese individuals in the short term. BACKGROUND: Pelvic floor dyssynergia (PFD) is one of the causes of chronic constipation. Laxative-based therapies are not very effective in treating this type of constipation. The therapeutic effectiveness of three therapeutic strategies, including biofeedback (BOF) alone, BOF+ fiber laxative (psyllium), and BOF +osmotic laxative (polyethylene glycol; [PEG]), was assessed in patients with constipation secondary to PFD. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with constipation were included during a period from 2017 to 2018. Thirty-two patients were treated with BOF alone, 25 patients received BOF+ fiber laxative (psyllium), and 31 patients received BOF+ osmotic laxative (PEG) for 2 to 3 months. A checklist was used to compare outcomes before and after the interventions. RESULTS: Satisfaction rates from the treatments were 60.83%, 46.88%, and 41.32% in the BOF, BOF + psyllium, and BOF + PEG groups, respectively. Women had a higher satisfaction rate compared to men. Defecation quality improved, and the frequency of enema usage decreased (p <0.05) in all the groups after intervention. Difficulty in evacuation, need for digitation, and return to the toilet after defecation significantly improved in the BOF alone group. Using laxatives reduced straining during evacuation and increased the duration of defecation. All the three regimens reduced rectal bleeding (p <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Combinations of laxatives with BOF did not offer significant therapeutic benefit. As laxatives may cause dissatisfaction and incomplete/prolonged defecations in patients with PFD, adding laxatives to the BOF regimen is not recommended for these patients.

BACKGROUND: Starch digestibility in foods strongly depends on the structure, other ingredients and processing conditions used. This study aimed to investigate the effect of psyllium fiber on gelatinization, crystallinity and in vitro digestibility of starches having different crystalline structures (A, B and C). Wheat, potato and tapioca starches with and without added psyllium fiber were heated at 90 °C for 10 min at three different solid:water (w:v) ratios (1:1, 1:2 and 1:5). The added fiber content was 50% (dry base) in the solid fraction for the fiber-added samples. RESULTS: Wheat, potato and tapioca starches showed different structural, morphological and starch digestibility properties. The effect of cooking and fiber addition on starch digestion differed for the starch types, mainly wheat starch. Psyllium addition during cooking decreased the rapidly digestible starch (RDS) fractions while increasing the slowly digestible starch (SDS) and remaining/resistant starch (RS) fractions. The effect of psyllium fiber addition was not limited to restricting the swelling and gelatinization of starch granules during heating. Psyllium fiber effectively restricted the mobility of digestive enzymes during digestion. CONCLUSION: Understanding the relationship between psyllium and starch digestibility for different types of starch could assist in designing food formulations with lower starch digestibility. These in vitro data, however, should be confirmed by in vivo studies. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) frequently resort to natural products, or request doctors to prescribe them, to relieve their symptoms, due to the poor efficacy and tolerability of several traditional drugs. Products containing fiber are among the most used and their clinical efficacy is discussed here based on the most recent scientific evidence. AREAS COVERED: A literature search was carried out to identify the most significant publications in order to deal with the topics of the general characteristics of fibers and the scientific evidence underlying their therapeutic use, the properties of ispaghula husk and the mechanisms by which this product carries out its therapeutic actions. EXPERT OPINION: The most recent clinical guidelines on the management of IBS consider ispaghula husk, a product containing soluble fiber, as a reasonable first line therapy for IBS patients with symptoms. In contrast, products containing insoluble fibers, particularly wheat bran, do not appear to be useful in treating IBS symptoms. The clinical data on the use of prebiotics in IBS are still inconclusive. However, low daily amounts of fructo-oligosaccharides or ß-galacto-oligosaccharides (also known as trans-galacto-oligosaccharides) may be effective in improving IBS symptoms; further trials are needed to definitively establish their clinical usefulness.

Psyllium gum is a hydrocolloid found in the husk of seeds from Plantago ovata. Psyllium husk has been used in traditional medicine in areas of India and China. Its consumption has been shown to provide nutritional benefits, such as the capacity to reduce the glycaemic index, to minimize the risk of cardiovascular diseases, to decrease cholesterol and constipation problems and others. Thus, interest in the incorporation of psyllium in food products is twofold. First, it can be a natural alternative to the use of other gums and hydrocolloids considered additives. Second, it can be used to improve the nutritional properties of products in which it is incorporated. However, for this purpose, it is necessary to add great quantities of psyllium. This review analyses the potential use of psyllium in distinct food products, considering its advantages and inconveniences as well as possible solutions for undesired effects. Among the analyzed products there are bakery products and, in particular, gluten-free breads where psyllium has been used as a gluten substitute. The incorporation of psyllium into dairy products such as yogurts and those derived from fruits, among others, is also addressed.

Refined foods are commonly depleted in certain bioactive components that are abundant in 'natural' (plant) foods. Identification and addition of these 'missing' bioactives in the diet is, therefore, necessary to counteract the deleterious impact of convenience food. In this study, multiomics approaches were employed to assess the addition of the popular supplementary soluble dietary fibers inulin and psyllium, both in isolation and in combination with a refined animal feed. A 16S rRNA sequencing and 1H NMR metabolomic investigation revealed that, whilst inulin mediated an increase in Bifidobacteria, psyllium elicited a broader microbial shift, with Parasutterella and Akkermansia being increased and Enterorhabdus and Odoribacter decreased. Interestingly, the combination diet benefited from both inulin and psyllium related microbial changes. Psyllium mediated microbial changes correlated with a reduction of glucose (R -0.67, -0.73, respectively, p < 0.05) and type 2 diabetes associated metabolites: 3-methyl-2-oxovaleric acid (R -0.72, -0.78, respectively, p < 0.05), and citrulline (R -0.77, -0.71, respectively, p < 0.05). This was in line with intestinal and hepatic carbohydrate response (e.g., Slc2a2, Slc2a5, Khk and Fbp1) and hepatic lipogenesis (e.g., Srebf1 and Fasn), which were significantly reduced under psyllium addition. Although established in the liver, the intestinal response associated with psyllium was absent in the combination diet, placing greater significance upon the established microbial, and subsequent metabolomic, shift. Our results therefore highlight the heterogeneity that exists between distinct dietary fibers in the context of carbohydrate uptake and metabolism, and supports psyllium containing combination diets, for their ability to negate the impact of a refined diet.
