RESUMEN

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of acupressure applied to hemodialysis patients on the level of daytime sleepiness and sleep quality. The data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. In the study, a total of 12 sessions of acupressure were applied to the Shenmen (HT7), Sanyingjao (Sp6), and Yungquan (KI1) points in the experimental group for 4 weeks. No intervention was applied to the control group. After the acupressure, it was determined that the sleep quality of the experimental group was better than that of the control group and that daytime sleepiness was less compared with the control group. After the acupressure, it was determined that the sleep latency of the experimental group was statistically significantly less and their total sleep duration was higher compared with the control group (P < .05). Although there was a decrease in the sleep quality of the experimental group 1 month after the cessation of the acupressure, it was determined that the sleep quality of the experimental group was better than that of the control group (P < .05). It was concluded that acupressure was an effective nursing intervention in increasing sleep quality and decreasing daytime sleepiness of hemodialysis patients.

RESUMEN

We performed a systematic review to look at the role of alternative or complementary medicine such as music, acupressure, acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and audiovisual distractions to decrease analgesia requirement and alleviate anxiety during SWL. Twenty-three papers(2439 participants) were included: Music (n = 1056.6%), Acupuncture (n = 517.7%), Acupressure (n = 13.8%), TENS (n = 617.2%), and audiovisual distraction (n = 14.6%). Most of the studies showed that complementary therapy, lowered pain, and anxiety with higher patient satisfaction and willingness to undergo the procedure. With its feasibility and convenience, urological guidelines need to endorse it, and more should be done to promote its use in outpatient urological procedures.

RESUMEN

AIMS: The study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial in order to determine the effects of acupressure on acute pain during venipuncture in children. METHODS: The population of the study consisted of children, aged between 9 and 12 years, who received venipuncture between September 2015 and June 2016 at a university hospital in Istanbul. The sample consisted of a total of 90 children, including 45 children in the acupressure group and 45 children in the control group, who met the sample inclusion criteria. The results of the study were obtained by using an information form, the State Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC), the visual analog scale (VAS), and the Faces Pain Scale-Revised (FPS-R). Acupressure was applied to the children in the acupressure group for 10 min before the venipuncture procedure. Pain, heart rate, and oxygen saturation levels of the children in the acupressure and control groups were evaluated both before and after the venipuncture procedure. RESULTS: The children in the acupressure and control groups were found to be similar in terms of age, gender, parents' educational levels and working status, number of venipuncture procedures, and mean anxiety scores. In the evaluation that was conducted before the venipuncture procedure, no statistically significant differences were observed between the heat rates, oxygen saturation levels, and expected pain scores from the venipuncture procedure in the children in the acupressure and control groups. On the other hand, it was observed that the children in the acupressure group (VAS: 19.51 ± 4.98; FPS-R: 2.08 ± 0.41) experienced less pain than the children in the control group (VAS: 47.37 ± 9.89; FPS-R: 4.84 ± 1.08), and there was a significant difference between the two groups (p< .000). LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: Acupressure administration is effective in reducing the pain that is experienced by children during a venipuncture procedure.

RESUMEN

Auricular acupressure (AA) is widely used in East Asia and Europe to manage patients with sleep disturbance. This feasibility study was performed to demonstrate the potential of AA for sleep disturbance in patients with leukemia. Thirty-two patients with leukemia with poor sleep quality received AA 3 times a day for a total of 4 weeks. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality at baseline, at a 2-week intervention, and after a 4-week intervention. Compared with baseline scores, PSQI scores and the use of sleep medicine were significantly improved at week 2 and week 4 (P < .05). As a potential safety therapy, AA could be an alternative or complementary intervention to improve sleep quality for patients with leukemia with sleep disturbance.

RESUMEN

Each year, 40% to 60% of smokers try to quit, but smoking cessation success rate for 1 year was 1% to 9% without professional help and 7% to 40% with professional help. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of group counseling with auricular acupressure on smoking cessation and tobacco withdrawal symptoms. This study is a randomized controlled trial. This study was performed at a university in South Korea. Fifty-five smokers were randomly assigned to 3 groups: group 1 (auricular acupressure + counseling), group 2 (placebo acupressure + counseling), and the control group (self-help smoking cessation). Group counseling and auricular acupressure were undertaken once a week for 6 weeks. The smoking cessation rate in group 1 for 1 year was significantly higher than that in group 2 and the control group (22.2%, 5.3%, and 5.6%, respectively). Tobacco withdrawal symptom scores were significantly decreased in group 1 compared with that in group 2 over 6 weeks (F = 3.2, P = .025). Auricular acupressure with group counseling was effective and group counseling alone was not effective for 1-year smoking cessation.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To manage chemotherapy-induced neuropathy (CIN), this paper explores reliable and valid objectives measures to evaluate the treatment effects of auricular point acupressure (APA). DESIGN/METHOD: This study was a repeated-measures one-group design. Participants received four weeks of APA to manage their CIN. The laboratory-assessed and objective outcomes included quantitative sensory testing, grip and pinch strength, and inflammatory biomarkers. Wilcoxon matched pairs signed-rank tests were conducted to determine change scores of outcomes at pre- vs. post- and pre- vs. 1-month follow-up. Spearman's rho correlation coefficient was used to examine the linear association of score changes of all objective study outcomes. RESULTS: Comparing pre-and-post APA, (1) the mean score of the monofilament for all lower extremity sites tested decreased after APA, indicating sensory improvement; (2) the suprathreshold pinprick stimuli mean scores on the upper extremities increased, except the scores from the index finger and thumb; (3) the pain tolerance of thumb and trapezius areas increased; (4) decreasing IL1ß (p = .05), IFNγ (p = .02), IL-2 (p = .03), IL-6 (p = .05), IL-10 (p = .05), and IP10/CXCL10 (p = .04) were observed pre-post APA. Conditional pain modulation was significantly (p< .05) associated with pain intensity (r = 0.55), tingling (r = 0.59); and IL1ß concentration (r = 0.53) pre-post APA. The sustained effects of 4-week APA were observed at the 1-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Our study findings demonstrated the promising effectiveness of APA in the management of CIN, and these treatment effects can be assessed using reliable and valid objective measures. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: If the efficacy of APA to manage CIN is confirmed in a larger sample, APA has the potential to be a scalable treatment for CIN because it is a reproducible, standardized, and easy-to-perform intervention.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Primary dysmenorrhea is a painful uterine contraction caused by endometrial laceration. Drug therapies and complementary medicine have been used to treat dysmenorrhea. The aim of this study was to investigate and offer an updated perspective on the treatments for dysmenorrhea. METHODS: The present study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA checklist for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The required information was collected based on searches for the following keywords: treatment, primary dysmenorrhea, medicinal plants, chemical drugs, and herbs. Searches were performed on databases Pubmed, Web of Sciences, Scopus, Iran medex, and SID by March 2018 to find literature in the English and Persian languages on this subject without a time limit. RESULTS: This review included 17 papers, 10 of which on complementary medicine, three on drug therapies, and four on acupuncture and acupressure. The largest and smallest samples had 303 and 24 patients, respectively. Length of treatment ranged from one to six months and the measures most commonly used in the studies were the visual analogue scale and clinical efficacy. Reported complications included gastrointestinal events, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and liver and kidney disorders. CONCLUSION: Medicinal plants, drugs, and acupressure seem to suppress pain by reducing the level of prostaglandins, mediating nitric oxide, increasing beta-endorphin levels, blocking the calcium channel, and enhancing circulatory flow through the uterine pathway. Further trials are required to confirm the benefits of the procedures described and ensure the absence of complications.

RESUMEN

This retrospective study investigated the efficacy and safety of escitalopram oxalate (ESO) for the treatment of post-stroke depression (PSD).A total of 115 patients with PSD were included in this study. A total of 65 patients underwent ESO (Intervention group). A total of 50 patients received acupressure (Control group). The outcome measurements included Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), and Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS). In addition, we also recorded the adverse events in this study. At the end of 8-week treatment, ESO showed greater efficacy in depression, measured by MADRS (P < .01); anxiety, measured by HAM-A scale (P < .01); and disability, measured by SDS (P < .01), compared to acupressure. Additionally, there were not significant differences regarding adverse events between two groups (P > .05).The present results indicate that ESO can decrease symptoms of patients with PSD.

RESUMEN

Premenstrual syndrome is the most common of gynaecologic complaints. It affects half of all female adolescents today and represents the leading cause of college/school absenteeism among that population. It was sought to assess the effectiveness of acupressure Vs reflexology on premenstrual syndrome among adolescents. Two-group pre-test and post-test true experimental design was adopted for the study. Forty adolescent girls from Government Girls Secondary School, Erode with pre- menstrual syndrome fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by simple random sampling. A pre-test was conducted by using premenstrual symptoms assessment scale. Immediately after pre-test acupressure Vs reflexology was given once a week for 6 weeks and again post-test was conducted to assess the effectiveness of treatment. Collected data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. In post-test, the mean score of the experimental group I sample was 97.3 (SD = 2.5) and the group II mean score was 70:8 (SD = 10.71) with paired 't' value of 19.2 and 31.9. This showed that the reflexology was more effective than acupressure in enhancing the practice of the sample regarding pre-menstrual syndrome. Statistically no significant association was found between the post-test scores of the sample with their demographic variables. The findings imply the need for educating adolescent girls on effective management of pre-menstrual syndrome.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore client perceptions of the short-term and longer-term effects of shiatsu. DESIGN: The study design was a prospective, 6-month observational, pragmatic study. SETTING: There were 85 shiatsu practitioners in three countries involved in the study: Austria, Spain, and the United Kingdom. SUBJECTS: There were 948 clients receiving shiatsu from 1 of these practitioners. INTERVENTIONS: Shiatsu as delivered by the practitioner in routine practice. OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcomes measures were symptom severity, changes in health care use (baseline, 3 and 6 months), shiatsu-specific effects, uptake of advice (3 and 6 months), achieved expectations and occurrence of adverse events (4-6 days after first session, 3 and 6 months). RESULTS: Six hundred and thirty-three (633) clients provided full follow-up data (a response rate of 67%). A typical shiatsu user was female, in her 40s, in paid employment, and had used shiatsu before. At "first-ever" use, the most typical reason for trying shiatsu was "out of curiosity." At "today's" session, the dominant reason was health maintenance. The most mentioned symptom groups were problems with "muscles, joints, or body structure," "tension/stress," and "low energy/fatigue." Symptom scores improved significantly over the 6 months (all symptom groups, Austria and the United Kingdom; two symptom groups, Spain), with moderate effect sizes (0.66-0.77) for "tension or stress" and "body structure problems" (Austria, the United Kingdom), and small effect sizes (0.32-0.47) for the other symptom groups (Spain, 0.28-0.43 for four groups). Previous users reported significant symptom improvement from "first ever" to baseline with moderate effect sizes. Across countries, substantial proportions (> or = 60%) agreed or agreed strongly with shiatsu-specific benefits. At 6 months, 77%-80% indicated that they had made changes to their lifestyle as a result of having shiatsu, and reductions in the use of conventional medicine (16%-22%) and medication (15%-34%). Ten (10) adverse events were reported by 9 clients (1.4%); none of these clients ceased shiatsu. CONCLUSIONS: Clients receiving shiatsu reported improvements in symptom severity and changes in their health-related behaviour that they attributed to their treatment, suggestive of a role for shiatsu in maintaining and enhancing health.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This paper addresses price elasticity, an indicator for the responsiveness of demand for healthcare to changes in price, in the context of a large public health clinic that provides acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and shiatsu. DESIGN: The study is descriptive and observational. The observations resulted from a "natural experiment" and involved examining utilization before and after a 5 dollars(17%) price increase for all services. Aggregate data were collected on demographics and utilization of 222 clients using services over a 6-month period in 2004. SETTING: Pathways to Wellness is a nonprofit agency that provides complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) services to underserved, low-income clients. The agency administers a clinic that has been operating for the past 15 years and currently provides approximately 1200 treatments per month. OUTCOME MEASURES: Utilization data on number of treatments administered were collected for 3 months prior to the price increase and compared to utilization data for the 3 months after the price increase. Comparisons were made for both the immediate changes in utilization (2-month data) and quarterly changes in utilization (6-month data). RESULTS: Utilization dropped for all three services in the month after the price increase. Values of elasticity associated with the immediate changes were calculated as -0.35 for acupuncture services, -1.31 for Chinese herbal consultations, and -2.34 for shiatsu services, and indicate a wide range of responsiveness. CONCLUSIONS: Values of price elasticities indicate a range of differential responses to change in price for services. The relatively smaller drop in utilization of acupuncture services may be consistent with clients' perceptions of effectiveness or immediacy of treatment symptom relief.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: To compare differences in nausea experience and intensity in women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer between those receiving usual care plus acupressure training and treatment and those receiving only usual care. DESIGN: Single-cycle, randomized clinical trial. SETTING: Outpatient oncology clinic in a major teaching medical center and a private outpatient oncology practice. SAMPLE: Seventeen women participated in the study. The typical participant was 49.5 years old (SD = 6.0), Caucasian (59%), not married/partnered (76%), on disability (53%), born a U.S. citizen (76%), and heterosexual (88%); lived alone (59%); had at least graduated from high school (100%); and had an annual personal income of $50,000 or greater (65%). METHODS: The intervention included finger acupressure bilaterally at P6 and ST36, acupressure points located on the forearm and by the knee. Baseline and poststudy questionnaires plus a daily log were used to collect data. MAIN RESEARCH VARIABLES: Nausea experience measured by the Rhodes inventory of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching and nausea intensity. FINDINGS: Significant differences existed between the two groups in regard to nausea experience (p < 0.01) and nausea intensity (p < 0.04) during the first 10 days of the chemotherapy cycle, with the acupressure group reporting less intensity and experience of nausea. CONCLUSIONS: Finger acupressure may decrease nausea among women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: This study must be replicated prior to advising patients about the efficacy of acupressure for the treatment of nausea.
