In the current study, the anti-inflammatory and analgesic potential of Alnus nitida (leaves and fruits) was evaluated in the Sprague-Dawley rat. Traditionally, A. nitida was used for the treatment of inflammatory ailments. However, A. nitida leaves and fruits have not been yet reported regarding any potential medicinal effects. Leaves/fruits of A. nitida were extracted with methanol and fractionated to attain n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions. These extracts were then evaluated for in vivo analgesic and anti-inflammatory potential. For in vivo anti-inflammatory activity, carrageenan-induced paw edema assay, Freunds' complete adjuvant-induced edema, xylene-induced ear edema and histamine-induced paw edema models were used in rats, which showed significant (p < 0.01) reduction (70−80%) in edema in comparison of inflammatory controls. On other hand, for the analgesic assessment, hot plate assay and acetic acid-induced writhing tests were used, which showed a significant (p < 0.01) rise in latency time (40−60%) as compared with pain-induced controls. These results were comparable with standard drugs in a concentration-dependent manner and no mortality or toxicity was observed during all experiments. Then, for the identification of chemical constituents gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was performed, which indicated the presence of neophytadiene, 3,7,11,15-Tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1-ol, phytol and vitamin E, justifying the use of A. nitida to treat inflammatory disorders.

The aim of this study was to identify polyphenolic compounds contained in ethanol and water extracts of black alder (Alnus glutinosa L.) acorns and evaluate their anti-cancer and antimicrobial effects. The significant anti-cancer potential on the human skin epidermoid carcinoma cell line A431 and the human epithelial cell line A549 derived from lung carcinoma tissue was observed. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of alder acorns inhibited the growth of mainly Gram-positive microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus mutans) and yeast-like fungi (Candida albicans, Candida glabrata), as well as Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Citrobacter freundii, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) strains. The identification of polyphenols was carried out using an ACQUITY UPLC-PDA-MS system. The extracts were composed of 29 compounds belonging to phenolic acids, flavonols, ellagitannins and ellagic acid derivatives. Ellagitannins were identified as the predominant phenolics in ethanol and aqueous extract (2171.90 and 1593.13 mg/100 g DM, respectively) The results may explain the use of A. glutinosa extracts in folk medicine.

An experimentally proven novel analytical approach for chromatographic analysis of diarylheptanoids in grey alder (Alnus incana) and black alder (Alnus glutinosa) bark matrices was established. A method for qualitative and quantitative determination of oregonin (dominant diarylheptanoid) and semiquantitative analysis of related diarylheptanoids from alder bark using a photodiode array (PDA) detector coupled to a high-resolution mass spectrometer (QTOF-MS) was developed. A comparison of different liquid chromatography detectors (UV, MS and ELS) showed that only a combination of them is applicable for comprehensive analysis of multicomponent extracts. A total of sixteen different diarylheptanoids were simultaneously identified and semi-quantified in alder bark extracts. This is the first report of the method for individual and total diarylheptanoid determination in alder bark extracts, discussed in detail. The liquid chromatography complex is suggested as a tool for the reliable identification and quality control of the diarylheptanoids containing extracts isolated from the Alnus species and their dominant component - oregonin. The semiquantitative methodology established, and the dominant compound quantification provided means for assessing comparative sample complexities.

Alnus sibirica extracts (ASex) have long been used in Oriental medicine to treat various conditions. To provide a scientific basis for this application and the underlying mechanism, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of ASex in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro model was established using human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) treated with inflammatory stimulants (lipopolysaccharide, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interferon-gamma). Lactate dehydrogenase and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction showed that ASex inhibited the increased expression of acute-phase inflammatory cytokines. The in vivo model was established by inducing skin inflammation in NC/Nga mice via the repeated application of house dust mite (HDM) ointment to the ears and back of the mice for eight weeks. HDM application increased the severity of skin lesions, eosinophil/mast cell infiltration, and serum immunoglobulin E levels, which were all significantly decreased by ASex treatment, demonstrating the same degree of protection as hydrocortisone. Overall, ASex showed excellent anti-inflammatory effects both in vitro and in vivo, suggesting its potential as an excellent candidate drug to reduce skin inflammation.

JNK and p38 are important mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) that respond to stress stimuli. The stress-activated MAPKs associated with apoptotic cell death play vital roles in mammalian cells. Alnus hirsuta, which contains abundant diarylheptanoids derivatives, is a valuable medicinal plant. The CHCl3 extract (AHC) containing platyphyllenone (1) and platyphyllone (3) as main compounds showed in vitro anticancer effects. We report the biological activities of A. hirsuta extract associated with the regulation of apoptosis and JNK and p38 in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Levels of phospho-JNK and phospho-p38 by AHC treatment were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). ROS production, apoptotic effect, and DNA contents of the cells were measured by flow cytometry. The two diarylheptanoids 1 and 3 and the AHC extract exhibited cytotoxic effects on MCF-7 cells in MTT assay, with IC50 values of 18.1, 46.9, 260.0 µg/mL, respectively. AHC induced ROS generation and elevated the endogenous levels of phospho-JNK and phospho-p38. AHC resulted in apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. We suggest that the antitumor effect of A. hirsuta extract is achieved by apoptosis promotion and cell cycle arrest mediated by the activation of JNK and p38 signaling pathway via ROS generation.

The effects of Alnus sibirica (AS) extracts on cytokine expression induced by inflammatory stimulants were examined in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) and RAW264.7 cells. The anti-oxidative effect and effect on cell viability of AS extracts were evaluated, and four extracts with the highest anti-oxidative effects were selected. HDFs and RAW264.7 cells were treated with inflammatory stimulants, and the expression of cytokines involved in acute (IL-6 and IL-10) and chronic (IL-18) inflammation, the initiation of the immune response (IL-33), and non-specific immune responses (IL-1ß, IL-8, and TNF-α) were determined using a reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. LPS increased the expression of all the cytokines, except for IL-18; however, AS extracts, particularly AS2 and AS4, reduced this increase, and TNF-α treatment markedly increased the expression of cytokines related to non-specific immune responses. IFN-γ treatment induced no significant changes, except for increased IL-33 expression in HDFs. AS extracts inhibited the increase in the expression of IL-33 and other cytokines in HDFs. Thus, the exposure of HDFs and RAW264.7 cells to inflammatory stimulants increased the expression of cytokines related to all the inflammatory processes. HDFs are involved not only in simple tissue regeneration but also in inflammatory reactions in the skin. AS2 and AS4 may offer effective therapy for related conditions.

In this study, we investigated the phenolic composition of the crude extract (MeOH 80 %) of Alnus cordata (Loisel.) Duby stem bark (ACE) and its antioxidant and skin whitening properties. RP-LC-DAD analysis showed a high content of hydroxycinnamic acids (47.64 %), flavanones (26.74 %) and diarylheptanoids (17.69 %). Furthermore, ACE exhibited a dose-dependent antioxidant and free-radical scavenging activity, expressed as half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50 ): Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC, IC50 1.78 µg mL-1 )>Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC, IC50 3.47 µg mL-1 )>2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH, IC50 5.83 µg mL-1 )>ß-carotene bleaching (IC50 11.58 µg mL-1 )>Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP, IC50 17.28 µg mL-1 ). Moreover, ACE was able to inhibit in vitro tyrosinase activity (IC50 77.44 µg mL-1 ), l-DOPA auto-oxidation (IC50 39.58 µg mL-1 ) and in an in vivo model it exhibited bleaching effects on the pigmentation of zebrafish embryos (72 h post fertilization) without affecting their development and survival. In conclusion, results show that A. cordata stem bark may be considered a potential source of agents for the treatment of skin disorders due to its bleaching properties and favorable safety profiles, associated to a good antioxidant power.

Alnus sibirica (AS) is geographically distributed in Korea, Japan, Northeast China, and Russia. Various anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-atopic dermatitis and anti-cancer biological effects of AS have been reported. Enzymatic hydrolysis decomposes the sugar bond attached to glycoside into aglycone which, generally, has a superior biological activity, compared to glycoside. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the extract (EAS) from AS was processed and the isolated compounds were investigated-hirsutanonol (1), hirsutenone (2), rubranol (3), and muricarpon B (4). The structures of these compounds were elucidated, and the biological activities were assessed. The ability of EAS and the compounds (1-4) to scavenge 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and Nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) superoxide, and to inhibit NO production was evaluated in vitro. EAS showed more potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity than AS. All investigated compounds showed excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract caused by high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and epithelial barrier dysfunction. Alnus japonica Steud. (Betulaceae) has been used in traditional Asian medicine. However, the potential of A. japonica for the treatment of intestinal inflammation has not been investigated. This study investigated the effects of ethanol extract from A. japonica bark (AJE) on colonic mucosa injury in mice with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis. Treatment with AJE ameliorated pathological damage and the histopathologic features of DSS-induced colitis. The administration of AJE also inhibits DSS-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines expression, including interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2. Notably, AJE administration attenuated the reduction of tight junction proteins, zonula occludens (ZO)-1 and occludin, in DSS-induced colitis. In addition, AJE increased heme oxygenase (HO)-1 expression and prevented DSS-induced apoptosis in colonic epithelial cells. Furthermore, in vitro studies demonstrated that AJE inhibits TNF-α-induced IL-8, IL-1ß, and COX-2 expression in human intestinal epithelial HT-29 cells and tert-butyl hydroperoxide-induced reduction of ZO-1 and occludin expression in human intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cells. AJE-induced HO-1 protein expression was also found in both HT-29 and Caco-2 cells. Taken together, our findings demonstrated that AJE inhibits intestinal inflammation and protects against intestinal barrier disruption in mice with DSS-induced colitis in vivo and human intestinal epithelial cells in vitro. These results suggest that AJE might have beneficial effects for the treatment of IBD.

Phytochemical isolation of fermented Alnus sibirica (FAS) which was produced by using Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. argentoratensis, exhibited multiple and different composition compared with the original plant. Anti-allergic contact dermatitis (anti-ACD)/anti-atopic dermatitis (anti-AD) activities (visual observation and regulation of Th1/Th2 cytokines and IgE in blood) of FAS and the barks of Alnus sibirica extract (AS) and the two diarylheptanoids, hirsutenone (1) and muricarpon B (2), which are major components of FAS, were measured in vitro and in vivo. FAS, AS and the two compounds showed potent anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-ACD and anti-AD activity. In particular, FAS showed more potent biological activity than AS. Thus, fermentation might be a prominent way to enhance the biological activity compared with the original plant. In addition, compounds (1) and (2) might be developed as functional materials or herbal medicines for ACD and AD.

CONTEXT: Contact with pollen is the major reason for the development of allergic symptoms on the ocular surface leading to a significant increase of allergic diseases worldwide. Environmental changes such as increased ultraviolet (UV) radiation and air pollution are discussed as contributory causes for this increase. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effect of UV light on the histamine content of pollen and examined if an irradiation of pollen affects the viability and proliferation of conjunctival cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Alder (Alnus glutinosa) and hazel (Corylus avellana) pollen were irradiated for different time periods with sunlight, UV-A or UV-B light and the histamine content was analysed and compared with non-irradiated pollen. Conjunctival epithelial cells (CHANG cells) were exposed to irradiated and non-irradiated pollen followed by an assessment of cell viability with the colorimetric MTS test and the impedance-based measurement of cell proliferation using the xCELLigence real-time analysis system. RESULTS: UV light irradiation increased the histamine level of alder and hazel pollen in a dose-dependent manner. CHANG cells treated with irradiated pollen induced a statistically significant higher decrease of cell viability than treatment with non-irradiated pollen. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that UV light is able to alter pollen thus making them more harmful for conjunctival cells.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the antioxidant activity and anti-adipogenic effect of extracts from Alnus firma (A. firma), which is an edible plant that grows in mountainous areas. The total phenolic, flavonoid and anthocyanin content as well as the antioxidant activity of a 70% ethanolic extract of A. firma (AFE) was assessed. Furthermore, the effects of AFE on lipid accumulation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production during adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 cells were investigated. The results revealed that the total phenolic, flavonoid and pro-anthocyanidin content of AFE as 436.26±3.30 mg gallic acid equivalents/g, 73.82±0.54 mg quercetin equivalents/g and 149.25±6.06 mg catechin equivalents/g, respectively. In addition, AFE exerted significant antioxidant effects in terms of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical scavenging activity, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activity, reducing power, oxygen radical absorbance capacity and nitric oxide radical scavenging activity. As for its anti-adipogenic activity, AFE significantly inhibited ROS production and lipid accumulation during adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 cells compared with those in control cells. In addition, AFE regulated adipogenic transcription factors including peroxisome proliferator­activated receptor-γ, CCAAT/enhance-binding protein α and adipocyte protein 2. These results indicated that A. firma is a potential candidate for a functional food supplement.

Fermentation of Alnus sibirica (AS) stems using Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. argentoratensis was conducted and three compounds isolated from the Alnus species were identified for the first time, 7-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-heptan-3-one, 1-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-7-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-heptan-3-one and 4-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-butan-2-one, along with 14 known compounds. The anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory abilities of AS and fermented AS (FAS) as well as the isolated phenolic compounds from FAS were investigated. FAS showed stronger anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities than non-fermented AS.

RESUMEN

The genus Alnus (Betulaceae) is comprised of more than 40 species. Many species of this genus have a long history of use in folk medicines. Phytochemical investigations have revealed the presence of diarylheptanoids, polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids and other compounds. Diarylheptanoids, natural products with a 1,7-diphenylheptane structural skeleton, are the dominant constituents in the genus, whose anticancer effect has been brought into focus. Pure compounds and crude extracts from the genus exhibit a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities both in vitro and in vivo. This paper compiles 273 naturally occurring compounds from the genus Alnus along with their structures and pharmacological activities, as reported in 138 references.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Stem bark of Alnus nitida (Spach) Endl. (family Betulaceae) is used by local communities in northern areas of Pakistan as a remedy for swelling, injuries and pain. However no pharmacological study of this plant has been reported to confirm these activities. In this study anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect of A. nitida stem bark have been evaluated. METHODS: Powder of the stem bark of A. nitida was extracted with methanol (ANBM) and partitioned in escalating polarity to get the n-hexane (ANBH), chloroform (ANBC), ethyl acetate (ANBE) and the residual soluble aqueous (ANBA) fractions. The methanol extract and derived fractions were evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity by using in vitro heat induced albumin denaturation assay and various in vivo assays; carrageenan-induced hind paw edema method, Freunds' complete adjuvant induced arthritis, histamine induced paw edema and xylene induced ear edema in Sprague Dawley rat. The extracts/fractions were also evaluated for analgesic effects by using hot plate analgesic test and acetic acid induced writhing test in rat. The ANBM composition was analyzed by HPLC-DAD and GC-MS analysis. RESULTS: Results of heat induced albumin denaturation activity indicated that among the extract/fractions ANBC at concentration range of 100-500µg/ml remarkably protected the heat induced albumin denaturation. The pretreatment with ANBC significantly reduced the carrageenan induced edema with 90.81±1.6% after 4h, comparing with 86.63±3.42% reduction produced by the reference drug diclofenac potassium. Histopathological alterations of the gastric and hind paw were decreased with the extract/fractions. Furthermore, anti-inflammatory effects of ANBC were evident in Freunds' complete adjuvant induced arthritis, histamine induced paw edema and xylene induced ear edema. The latency time in hot plate analgesic assay with ANBC (61.59±0.38%) after 90min was comparable to standard drug morphine (69.31±2.67%) and aspirin (67.24±2.08%). Similarly ANBC significantly (p<0.01) inhibited the pain sensation in acetic acid induced writhing test in rat. HPLC-DAD analysis of ANBM indicated the presence of gallic acid, catechin and rutin while the GC-MS analysis of ANBM indicated the presence of 30 compounds predominantly of neophytadiene, 3,7,11,15 tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1-ol, phytol, vitamin E and linalool. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggested that the presence of polyphenols, sterols, terpenoids and other constituents might contributed towards the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of the crude methanol extract of A. nitida bark and its derived fractions. This study endorsed the folklore use of A. nitida bark for inflammation related disorders.

RESUMEN

Fractionation of the ethyl acetate crude extract of the fermented male flowers of Alnus sieboldiana resulted in the isolation of two diaryiheptanoids and six flavonoids. Yashabushidiol A, yashabushidiol B and naringenin were known constituents of the male flowers of A. sieboldiana while kaenipferol, quercetin, pinocembrin dimethyl ether, 5,7-dimethoxy-3-hydroxyflavanone and 5,7-dimethoxy-3-hydroxyflavone were isolated for first time from the fermented mile flowers of A. sieboldiana. The isolated compounds were characterized using NMR and HRMS and compared with available literature. -.

Diarylheptanoids from the barks of Alnus viridis ssp. viridis (green alder) and Alnus glutinosa (black alder) were explored for anti-quorum sensing activity. Chemicals with anti-quorum sensing activity have recently been examined for antimicrobial applications. The anti-quorum sensing activity of the selected diarylheptanoids was determined using two biosensors, namely Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and Chromobacterium violaceum CV026. Although all of the investigated compounds negatively influenced the motility of P. aeruginosa PAO1, four were able to inhibit biofilm formation of this human opportunistic pathogen for 40-70 %. Three of the diarylheptanoids (3, 4, and 5) negatively influenced the biosynthesis of pyocyanin, which is under the control of quorum sensing. Platyphyllenone (7) and hirsutenone (5) were able to inhibit the biosynthesis of violacein in C. violaceum CV026, with 5 being able to inhibit the synthesis of both biopigments. Only one of the tested diarylheptanoids (1) was shown to significantly decrease the production of acyl homoserine lactones (AHL) in P. aeruginosa PAO1, more specifically, production of the long chain N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-l-HSL. On the other side, four diarylheptanoids (2-5) significantly reduced the synthesis of 2-alkyl-4-quinolones, part of the P. aeruginosa quinolone-mediated signaling system. To properly assess therapeutic potential of these compounds, their in vitro antiproliferative effect on normal human lung fibroblasts was determined, with doses affecting cell proliferation between 10 and 100 µg/mL. This study confirms that the barks of green and black alders are rich source of phytochemicals with a wide range of biological activities that could further be exploited as natural agents against bacterial contaminations and infections.

BACKGROUND: Alnus nitida (Spach) Endl. is traditionally used for inflammatory disorders. Diarylheptanoids constituents having diverse therapeutically importance including hepato-protective was reported in A. nitida. The aim of this study was to explore the antioxidant and hepato-protective profile of A. nitida stem bark's crude methanol extract (ANM). METHODS: Crude methanol extract of A. nitida stem bark and its derived fractions were assessed for phytochemical classes and in vitro antioxidant profiling by multidimensional assays. Hepato-protective assessment of ANM was investigated on rats, which were made hepatotoxic using carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Additionally HPLC-DAD analysis of ANM, and its derived ethyl acetate and aqueous fraction was carried out to determine the presence of active constituents. RESULTS: Qualitative analysis of crude extract-and its fractions depicted the presence of terpenoids, saponins, coumarins, phenols and flavonoids. Maximum quantity of total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) was recorded in ANM and its derived fractions; n-hexane (ANH), chloroform (ANC), ethyl acetate (ANE) and the residual aqueous (ANA). ANM exhibited the best total antioxidant capacity, total reducing power, and scavenging of DPPH and OH radicals. ANE and ANA exhibited strong scavenging potential for iron chelation, nitric oxide and ß-carotene bleaching assay. ANM treatment converse the activities of serum-marker enzymes and lipid profile, altered by CCl4 treatment in rat. CCl4 induced hepatic-cirrhosis in rat resulted in decrease of antioxidant enzyme activities such as catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione reductase-which were restored towards the normal level with ANM. Similarly diminished level of reduced glutathione while enhanced level of lipid peroxides, hydrogen peroxide and nitrite in liver of cirrhotic rats was normalized by treatment of ANM. The histopathological studies of liver tissues also represented that ANM possessed the hepato-protective activity. HPLC-DAD analysis against eight known standards confirmed the presence of gallic acid, catechin and rutin in ANM and in ANA while in ANE gallic acid was only detected. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of antioxidants, restoration of various antioxidant enzymes and histopathological studies, the recent study concludes that antioxidant potential of A. nitida bark might protect the liver damages.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Alnus species have been used for the treatment of rheumatism, hemorrhoids and for wound healing in folk medicine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Aqueous and methanol extracts of A. glutinosa (L.) Gaertner subsp. glutinosa, A. orientalis Decne. var. orientalis and A. orientalis var. pubescens Dippel leaves were evaluated for their wound healing, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. In vivo wound models of linear incision and circular excision were performed. "Inhibition of acetic acid-induced capillary permeability", "carrageenan-induced hind paw edema" and T"PA-induced ear edema" assays were applied to determine the anti-inflammatory effects. For the antioxidant activity assessment, DPPH and ABTS radicals scavenging effect, reducing power and denaturation of nonspecific hydroxyl radical-targeted 2-deoxyribose were used. In vitro inhibitory effects on enzymes hyaluronidase, collagenase and elastase were evaluated. The methanol extract of the leaves of A. glutinosa subsp. glutinosa (MB), the most potent extract, was fractionated by bioassay-guided fractionation technique. The structure of the isolated compound was determined as shikimic acid by using NMR and IR analyses. RESULTS: MB increased the wound tension by 42.79% value and provided a contraction by 51.58%. Wound tension, contraction capacity and tissue hydroxyproline levels were increased with the application of the fraction EtOAc: MeOH (Fr. D), subfraction D27-38 and shikimic acid. In the "inhibition of acetic acid-induced capillary permeability" assay, MB, Fr. D, subfraction D27-38 and shikimic acid inhibited the permeability with significant inhibition values of 30.22%, 32.46%, 38.24% and 27.19%, respectively. In carrageenan-induced hind paw edema model, MB displayed 29.1% inhibition. Likewise, Fr. D, subfraction D27-38, and shikimic acid were found to exhibit remarkable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Shikimic acid exhibited significant inhibitory effect (38.24%) on the hyaluronidase enzyme. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first and unique study that investigates wound healing, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of some Alnus taxons growing in Turkey. According to the results, shikimic acid was found to be the major compound responsible from the activity.

RESUMEN

Analysis of the volatile components present in the fresh male and female flowers and young leaves shows that 2-phenylethanol is the major component in all these three organs, which play a significant role in the strong resinous aromatic odor. The male flowers contained styrene as a second major compound. The level of styrene does not affect the male flowers odor concentration. The level of ß-phenylethyl cinnamate and trans-methyl cinnamate in the fermented male flowers decreased as the fermentation time increased. This was due to the Penicillium enzymatic action on the fermented male flowers.
