The quantitative analysis of multicomponents by single-marker(QAMS) was established for 13 chemical components of Epimedii Folium, including neoglycolic acid, chlorogenic acid, cryo-chlorogenic acid, magnolidine, hypericin, epimedin A, epimedin B, epimedin C, icariin, baohuoside Ⅱ, sagittatoside A, icariin subside Ⅰ, and baohuoside Ⅰ, so as to investigate the feasibility and accuracy of this method in evaluating the quality of Epimedii Folium materials from different origins and different varieties. Through the scientific and accurate investigation of the experimental method, the external standard method was used to determine the content of 13 chemical components in epimedium brevieornu. At the same time, icariin was used as the internal standard, and the relative correction factors of icariin with neoglycolic acid, chlorogenic acid, cryo-chlorogenic acid, magnolidine, hypericin, epimedin A, epimedin B, epimedin C, icariin, baohuoside Ⅱ, sagittatoside A, icariin subside Ⅰ, and baohuoside Ⅰ were established, respectively. The contens of neoglycolic acid, chlorogenic acid, cryo-chlorogenic acid, magnolidine, hypericin, epimedin A, epimedin B, epimedin C, icariin, baohuoside Ⅱ, sagittatoside A, icariin subside Ⅰ, and baohuosideⅠ in Epimedii Folium were calculated by QAMS. Finally, the difference between the measured value and the calculated value was compared to verify the accuracy and scientific nature of QAMS in the determination. The relative correction factor of each component had better repeatability, and there was no significant difference between the results of the external standard method and those of QAMS. With icariin as the internal standard, QAMS simultaneously determining neoglycolic acid, chlorogenic acid, cryo-chlorogenic acid, magnolidine, hypericin, epimedin A, epimedin B, epimedin C, icariin, baohuoside Ⅱ, sagittatoside A, icariin subside Ⅰ, and baohuoside Ⅰ can be used for quantitative analysis of Epimedii Folium.

The utilization of chemical dispersants as a way of mitigating of oil spills in marine eco-system has been extensively documented worldwide. Hence, in this research we have successfully synthesized two amphiphilic asymmetric Dicaionic Ionic Liquids (DILs). The efficacy of these synthesized DILs as dispersants was assessed using the baffled flask test (BFT). The results indicated a dispersant effectiveness ranging from 47.98 % to 79.76 % for the dispersion of heavy crude oil across various temperature ranges (10-30 °C). These dispersant-to-oil ratios (DOR) were maintained at 3: 100 (V%), showcasing promising dispersant capabilities for mitigating heavy crude oil spills. Additionally, acute toxicity tests conducted on Nile tilapia and Oreochromis niloticus have demonstrated the relatively low toxicity of the IL-dispersants, with Lethal Concentration 50 (LC50) values exceeding 100 ppm after 96 h. This suggests a practically slight toxic effect on the tested fish. In summary, the newly developed IL-dispersants are considered to be conducive to environmentally benign oil spill remediation.

St. John's Wort preparations are used for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. They are usually well tolerated but can cause adverse reactions including liver toxicity in rare cases. To date, the mechanism(s) underlying the hepatotoxicity of St. John's Wort extracts are poorly investigated. We studied the hepatocellular toxicity of hypericin and hyperforin as the two main ingredients of St. John's Wort extracts in HepG2 and HepaRG cells and compared the effects to citalopram (a synthetic serotonin uptake inhibitor) with a special focus on mitochondrial toxicity and oxidative stress. In HepG2 cells, hypericin was membrane-toxic at 100 µM and depleted ATP at 20 µM. In HepaRG cells, ATP depletion started at 5 µM. In comparison, hyperforin and citalopram were not toxic up to 100 µM. In HepG2 cells, hypericin decreased maximal respiration starting at 2 µM and mitochondrial ATP formation starting at 10 µM but did not affect glycolytic ATP production. Hypericin inhibited the activity of complex I, II and IV of the electron transfer system and caused mitochondrial superoxide accumulation in cells. The protein expression of mitochondrial superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) and thioredoxin 2 (TRX2) and total and reduced glutathione decreased in cells exposed to hypericin. Finally, hypericin diminished the mitochondrial DNA copy number and caused cell necrosis but not apoptosis. In conclusion, hypericin, but not hyperforin or citalopram, is a mitochondrial toxicant at low micromolar concentrations. This mechanism may contribute to the hepatotoxicity occasionally observed in susceptible patients treated with St. John's Wort preparations.

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes are technologies used in the oil and gas industry to maximize the extraction of residual oil from reservoirs after primary and secondary recovery methods have been carried out. The injection into the reservoir of surface-active substances capable of reducing the surface tension between oil and the rock surface should favor its extraction with significant economic repercussions. However, the most commonly used surfactants in EOR are derived from petroleum, and their use can have negative environmental impacts, such as toxicity and persistence in the environment. Biosurfactants on the other hand, are derived from renewable resources and are biodegradable, making them potentially more sustainable and environmentally friendly. The present review intends to offer an updated overview of the most significant results available in scientific literature on the potential application of biosurfactants in the context of EOR processes. Aspects such as production strategies, techniques for characterizing the mechanisms of action and the pros and cons of the application of biosurfactants as a principal method for EOR will be illustrated and discussed in detail. Optimized concepts such as the HLD in biosurfactant choice and design for EOR are also discussed. The scientific findings that are illustrated and reviewed in this paper show why general emphasis needs to be placed on the development and adoption of biosurfactants in EOR as a substantial contribution to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly oil and gas industry.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common psychiatric disorder in women after childbirth. Per data from epidemiologic studies, PPD affects about 5%-26.32% of postpartum mothers worldwide. Biological factors underlying this condition are multiple and complex and have received extensive inquiries for the roles they play in PPD. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), which is widely used as a complementary and alternative therapy for neurological disorders, possesses multi-component, multi-target, multi-access, and low side effect therapeutic characteristics. CHM has already shown efficacy in the treatment of PPD, and a lot more research exploring the mechanisms of its potential therapeutic effects is being conducted. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This review provides an in-depth and comprehensive overview of the underlying mechanisms of PPD, as well as samples the progress made in researching the potential role of CHM in treating the disorder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Literature was searched comprehensively in scholarly electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, CNKI and WanFang DATA, using the search terms "postpartum depression", "genetic", "hormone", "immune", "neuroinflammation", "inflammation", "neurotransmitter", "neurogenesis", "brain-gut axis", "traditional Chinese medicine", "Chinese herbal medicine", "herb", and an assorted combination of these terms. RESULTS: PPD is closely associated with genetics, as well as with the hormones, immune inflammatory, and neurotransmitter systems, neurogenesis, and gut microbes, and these biological factors often interact and work together to cause PPD. For example, inflammatory factors could suppress the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin by inducing the regulation of tryptophan-kynurenine in the direction of neurotoxicity. Many CHM constituents improve anxiety- and depression-like behaviors by interfering with the above-mentioned mechanisms and have shown decent efficacy clinically against PPD. For example, Shen-Qi-Jie-Yu-Fang invigorates the neuroendocrine system by boosting the hormone levels of hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) and hypothalamic pituitary gonadal (HPG) axes, regulating the imbalance of Treg/T-helper cells (Th) 17 and Th1/Th2, and modulating neurotransmitter system to play antidepressant roles. The Shenguiren Mixture interferes with the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway to enhance the number, morphology and apoptosis of neurons in the hippocampus of PPD rats. Other herbal extracts and active ingredients of CHM, such as Paeoniflorin, hypericin, timosaponin B-III and more, also manage depression by remedying the neuroendocrine system and reducing neuroinflammation. CONCLUSIONS: The pathogenesis of PPD is complex and diverse, with the main pathogenesis not clear. Still, CHM constituents, like Shen-Qi-Jie-Yu-Fang, the Shenguiren Mixture, Paeoniflorin, hypericin and other Chinese Medicinal Formulae, active monomers and Crude extracts, treats PPD through multifaceted interventions. Therefore, developing more CHM components for the treatment of PPD is an essential step forward.

A terrylenedicarboximide-anthraquinone dyad, FTQ, with absorption in the second near-infrared region (NIR-II) is obtained as a high-performance chromophore for photothermal therapy (PTT). The synthetic route proceeds by C-N coupling of amino-substituted terrylenedicarboximide (TMI) and 1,4-dichloroanthraquinone followed by alkaline-promoted dehydrocyclization. FTQ with extended π-conjugation exhibits an optical absorption band peaking at 1140 nm and extending into the 1500 nm range. Moreover, as determined by dielectric spectroscopy in dilute solutions, FTQ achieves an ultrastrong dipole moment of 14.4 ± 0.4 Debye due to intense intramolecular charge transfer. After encapsulation in a biodegradable polyethylene glycol (DSPE-mPEG2000), FTQ nanoparticles (NPs) deliver a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 49% under 1064 nm laser irradiation combined with excellent biocompatibility, photostability, and photoacoustic imaging capability. In vitro and in vivo studies reveal the great potential of FTQ NPs in photoacoustic-imaging-guided photothermal therapy for orthotopic liver cancer treatment in the NIR-II window.

Biosurfactants are surface active molecules generated by various microorganisms, including bacteria, actinobacteria, algae, and fungi. In this study, bacterial strains are isolated from soil contaminated with used motor oil and examined for potential biosurfactant production. A minimum salt medium (MSM), with crude oil as the only carbon source, is used to isolate potential biosurfactant-producing bacterial strains. About 23 strains are isolated, and all are subjected to the primary screening methods for biosurfactant production. Based on the emulsification index, oil displacement, and drop collapse screening methods, two isolates with potential biosurfactant-producing ability are selected for further studies. The synthesis of biosurfactants, crude oil and anthracene biodegradation is carried out with strains DTS1 and DTS2. Both strains show significant outcomes in crude oil degradation. In addition, both strains can utilize anthracene as the sole carbon source. During the degradation course, changes in the growth conditions are continuously monitored by measuring turbidity and pH. In this degradation study, the biosurfactant production aptitude of the isolated strains plays an essential role in increasing the bioavailability of hydrophobic hydrocarbons. These strains are identified down to the molecular level by employing 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and the acquired sequences are submitted to get the accession numbers. These prospective strains can be utilized to remediate hydrocarbon-contaminated environments.

Dietary components have recently received rapidly expanding attention for their potential to halt or reverse the development of many oxidative stress-mediated diseases after exposure to environmental toxicants. 7, 12 dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) is one of the most common environmental pollutants. The present study aimed to evaluate the chemo-preventive effects of broccoli as a nutritional component against DMBA intoxication in rats. A daily dose of aqueous (1 ml/rat) and methanolic (150 mg/kg) broccoli extracts, respectively, was given to 50-day-old female rats for 26 successive weeks after carcinogen intoxication with a single dose of 20 mg/ml of DMBA. DMBA intoxication resulted in a redox imbalance (a decreased GSH level and an increased MDA level) and increased DNA fragmentation in the liver, kidney, and brain. Besides, it affected the level of expression of the bcl2 gene in the liver, kidney, and brain tissue but didn't affect cfos gene expression accompanied by histopathological changes. The aqueous and methanolic broccoli extract supplements ameliorated the adverse effects by increasing the level of GSH, decreasing the MDA level, and reducing DNA fragmentation. Besides, broccoli extracts decreased the expression of bcl2 in the liver and brain and up-regulated bcl2 expression in the kidney, accompanied by lowering NF-κß 65 expression in the liver and brain and γ-catenin expression in the liver and kidney. In conclusion, broccoli as a dietary component had a strong chemoprotective effect against oxidative stress, DNA damage, and genotoxicity induced by DMBA intoxication in rats.

Hypericin can be derived from St. John's wort, which is widely spread around the world. As a natural product, it has been put into clinical practice such as wound healing and depression for a long time. In this article, we review the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and safety of hypericin, aiming to introduce the research advances and provide a full evaluation of it. Turns out hypericin, as a natural photosensitizer, exhibits an excellent capacity for anticancer, neuroprotection, and elimination of microorganisms, especially when activated by light, potent anticancer and antimicrobial effects are obtained after photodynamic therapy. The mechanisms of its therapeutic effects involve the induction of cell death, inhibition of cell cycle progression, inhibition of the reuptake of amines, and inhibition of virus replication. The pharmacokinetics properties indicate that hypericin has poor water solubility and bioavailability. The distribution and excretion are fast, and it is metabolized in bile. The toxicity of hypericin is rarely reported and the conventional use of it rarely causes adverse effects except for photosensitization. Therefore, we may conclude that hypericin can be used safely and effectively against a variety of diseases. We hope to provide researchers with detailed guidance and enlighten the development of it.

A new anthracene-based probe (E)-N'-(1-(anthracen-9-yl)ethylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (AHB) has been efficiently synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic methods. It exhibits extremely selective and sensitive fluorometric sensing of Al3+ ions with a large enhancement in the fluorescent intensity due to the restricted photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism with a chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect. The AHB-Al3+ complex shows a remarkably low limit of detection at 0.498 nM. The binding mechanism has been proposed based on Job's plot, 1H NMR titration, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and density functional theory (DFT) studies. The chemosensor is reusable and reversible in the presence of ctDNA. The practical usability of the fluorosensor has been established by a test strip kit. Further, the therapeutic potential of AHB against Al3+ ion-induced tau protein toxicity has been tested in the eye of Alzheimer's disease (AD) model of Drosophila via metal chelation therapy. AHB shows great therapeutic potential with 53.3% rescue in the eye phenotype. The in vivo interaction study of AHB with Al3+ in the gut tissue of Drosophila confirms its sensing efficiency in the biological environment. A detailed comparison table included evaluates the effectiveness of AHB.

C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) exhibits anti-inflammatory activity besides its natriuretic and diuretic functions. The present study aimed to determine the anticancer and synergistic therapeutic activity of CNP against a 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)/Croton oil-induced skin tumor mouse model. CNP (2.5 µg/kg body weight) was injected either alone and/or in combination with Cisplatin (CDDP) (2 mg/kg body weight) for 4 weeks. The dorsal skin tumor incidences/growth and mortality rate were recorded during the experimental period of 16 weeks. The serum C-reactive protein (CRP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, infiltrating mast cells, and AgNORs proliferating cells count were analyzed in control and experimental mice. Further, the expression profile of marker genes of proliferation, inflammation, and progression molecules were analyzed using Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)/quantitative PCR (qPCR), western blot, and immunohistochemistry. The DMBA/Croton oil-induced mice exhibited 100% tumor incidence. Whereas, CNP alone, CDDP alone, and CNP+CDDP combination-treated mice exhibited 58%, 46%, and 24% tumor incidence, respectively. Also, a marked reduction in the levels of serum CRP and LDH, the number of infiltrating mast cells count and AgNORs proliferating cells count were noticed in the mice skin sections. Further, a significant reduction in both mRNA and protein expression levels of proliferation, inflammation, and progression markers were noticed in CNP (p < 0.01), CDDP (p < 0.01), and CNP+CDDP combination (p < 0.001) treated mice, respectively. The results of the present study suggest that CNP has anticancer activity. Further, the CNP+CDDP treatment has more promising anticancer activity as compared with CNP or CDDP alone treatment, probably due to the synergistic antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory activities of CNP and CDDP.

Petroleum refineries generate oily sludge that contains hazardous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and hence, its proper disposal is of foremost concern. Analysis of the physicochemical properties and functions of indigenous microbes of the contaminated sites are essential in deciding the strategy for bioremediation. This study analyses both parameters at two geographically distant sites, with different crude oil sources, and compares the metabolic capability of soil bacteria with reference to different contamination sources and the age of the contaminated site. The results indicate that organic carbon and total nitrogen derived from petroleum hydrocarbon negatively affect microbial diversity. Contamination levels vary widely on site, with levels of PAHs ranging from 5.04 to 1.66 × 103 µg kg-1 and 6.20 to 5.64 × 103 µg kg-1 in Assam and Gujarat sites respectively, covering a higher proportion of low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs (fluorene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and anthracene). Functional diversity values were observed to be positively correlated (p < 0.05) with acenaphthylene, fluorene, anthracene, and phenanthrene. Microbial diversity was the highest in fresh oily sludge which decreased upon storage, indicating that immediate bioremediation, soon after its generation, would be beneficial. Improvement in the bio-accessibility of hydrocarbon compounds by the treatment of biosurfactant produced by a (soil isolate/isolate) was demonstrated., with respect to substrate utilization.

Microbial remediation is an eco-friendly and promising approach for the restoration of sites contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs). The degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), semi volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the soil samples collected from a petrochemical site by indigenous microbiome and exogenous microbes (Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 204508/S288c, Candida utilis AS2.281, Rhodotorula benthica CBS9124, Lactobacillus plantarum S1L6, Bacillus thuringiensis GDMCC1.817) was evaluated. Community structure and function of soil microbiome and the mechanism involved in degradation were also revealed. After bioremediation for two weeks, the concentration of TPHs in soil samples was reduced from 17,800 to 13,100 mg/kg. The biodegradation efficiencies of naphthalene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, 1,2,3-trichloropropane, 1,2-dichloropropane, ethylbenzene and benzene in soil samples with the addition of S. cerevisiae were 38.0%, 35.7%, 36.2%, 40.4%, 33.6%, 36.2%, 12.0%, 43.9%, 43.3% and 43.0%, respectively. The microbial diversity and community structure were improved during the biodegradation process. S. cerevisiae supplemented soil samples exhibited the highest relative abundance of the genus Acinetobacter for bacteria and Saccharomyces for yeast. The findings offer insight into the correlation between microbes and the degradation of PHC-based pollutants during the bioremediation process.

The research goal was to estimate the level of risk to human health posed by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Vietnamese takeaway coffee. A variety of roasted coffee beans were collected and tested for the presence of PAHs in various takeaway locations throughout Vietnam. Furthermore, the effect of roasting conditions on PAH concentrations in Vietnamese Robusta coffee was also studied and demonstrated. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, a modern, accurate, and fast method, was used to determine the research results. Six PAHs, namely naphthalene, anthracene, pyrene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and benz[a]anthracene, were found in the 100 collected samples, with average concentrations (µg/kg dry weight) of 943.7 ± 40.3, 195.1 ± 4.9, 36.1 ± 1.1, 33.3 ± 2.2, 28.2 ± 1.7, and 2.0 ± 0.1, respectively. It was found that the tested samples were almost free of PAH4 contamination. The research showed that the total value of PAH quantifications in Robusta coffee increased with increasing roasting temperature and decreased with increasing roasting time. In addition, the calculated value of the total hazard quotient (THQ) was less than 1, and the obtained value of the incremental lifetime carcinogenic risk (ILCR) did not exceed 1·10-5, meaning that coffee consumers in Vietnam are safe from exposure to PAHs present in the investigated coffee beans.

BACKGROUND: Hypericin is a prominent secondary metabolite mainly existing in genus Hypericum. It has become a research focus for a quiet long time owing to its extensively pharmacological activities especially the anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and neuroprotective effects. This review concentrated on summarizing and analyzing the existing studies of hypericin in a comprehensive perspective. METHODS: The literature with desired information about hypericin published after 2010 was gained from electronic databases including PubMed, SciFinder, Science Direct, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases and Wan Fang DATA. RESULTS: According to extensive preclinical and clinical studies conducted on the hypericin, an organized and comprehensive summary of the natural and artificial sources, strategies for improving the bioactivities, pharmacological activities, drug combination of hypericin was presented to explore the future therapeutic potential of this active compound. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, this review offered a theoretical guidance for the follow-up research of hypericin. However, the pharmacological mechanisms, pharmacokinetics and structure activity relationship of hypericin should be further studied in future research.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, Curcuma xanthorriza (CX), black cumin seed (BC), and honey have been used by the Indonesian people as medicinal ingredients to treat various health symptoms. CX extracts and BC have been proven in the laboratory as chemopreventive agents, antioxidants, and immunomodulators. In this study, we developed CX extract, BC oil, and honey into herbal honey preparations (CXBCH) and hypothesized that the preparations show chemopreventive activity. The purpose of the study was to determine the CXBCH potential as chemopreventive, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory. METHOD: In this experimental laboratory research, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and cytotoxic activities were tested on human mammary cancer cell lines (T47D cells) while the chemopreventive activity of the CXBCH preparations on Sprague Dawley (SD) rats induced with dimethylbenzene(a)anthracene (DMBA). RESULTS: CXBCH preparations demonstrated immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and cytotoxic activities in T47D, Hela, and HTB-183 cells and in DMBA-induced SD rats, as the preparations inhibited tumor nodule formation, increased the number of CD4, CD8 and CD4CD25 cells, and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, and decreased serum NO levels. CONCLUSIONS: CXBCH preparations display chemopreventive, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties.

The present study provides design guidance for unique multipotent molecules that sense and generate singlet oxygen (1 O2 ). A rhodamine 6G-aminomethylanthracene-linked donor-acceptor molecule (RA) is designed and synthesized for demonstrating wavelength-dependent functionalities as follows; (i) RA acts as a conventional fluorogenic 1 O2 sensor molecule like the commercially available reagent, singlet oxygen sensor green (SOSG), when it absorbs ultraviolet (UV)-visible light and reacts with 1 O2 . (ii) RA acts as a temporally controlled 1 O2 sensing reagent under the longer wavelength (∼700 nm) photosensitization. RA enters an intermediate state after capturing 1 O2 and does not become strongly fluorescent until it is exposed to UV, blue, or green light. (iii) RA acts as an efficient photosensitizer to generate 1 O2 under green light illumination. The spin-orbit charge transfer mediated intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC) process achieves this function, and RA shows a potential cancer-killing effect on pancreatic cancer cells. The wavelength-switchable functionalities in RA offer to promise molecular tools to apply 1 O2 in a spatiotemporal manner.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate effects of Jiangtang Sanhuang tablet (JTSHT) for regulating blood glucose and alleviating islet cell damage in db/db mice and its protective effects against endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and autophagy induced by glycolipid toxicity. METHODS: Forty db/db mice were randomized into 4 groups for daily intragastric administration of saline, JTSHT of 2.64 and 1.32 g/kg, and metformin at 0.225g/kg for 8 weeks, using 10 C57BL/6J mice as the normal control. After the treatments, the metabolic indexes of the mice were measured, and morphological changes of the islet cells were observed. A mouse islet cell line (MIN6) was exposed to high glucose (22 mmol/L glucose) and 0.1 mmol/L palmitic acid, followed by treatment with the sera from JTSHT- or saline- treated SD rats, alone or in combination with SP600125, and the changes in cell apoptosis, ERS and autophagy were evaluated using flow cytometry, RT-qPCR and Western blotting. RESULTS: In db/db mice, treatment with JTSHT significantly improved glucose and lipid metabolism (P < 0.05) and suppressed progressive weight gain (P < 0.05) without significant effect on drinking water volume (P > 0.05). JTSHT was also found to promote repair of islet cell injuries. In the cell experiments, high glucose exposure significantly increased apoptosis rate of MIN6 cells (P < 0.05), which was obviously lowered by treatment with JTSHT-treated rat serum (P < 0.05). Western blotting showed that JTSHT significantly reduced the level of ERS and autophagy caused by glycolipid toxicity in MIN6 cells (P < 0.05). Interference with ERS using SP600125 significantly attenuated the protective effect of JTSHT against MIN6 cell injury, apoptosis and autophagy induced by glycolipid toxicity (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: JTSHT has protective effects against glycolipid toxicity in MIN6 cells possibly by inhibiting ERS and autophagy.

B-N-fused dianthracenylpyrazine derivatives are synthesized to generate new low gap chromophores. Photophysical and electrochemical, crystal packing, and theoretical studies have been performed. Two energetically similar conformers are identified by density functional theory calculations, showing that the core unit adopts a curved saddle-like shape (x-isomer) or a zig-zag conformation (z-isomer). In the solid state, the z-isomer is prevalent according to an X-ray crystal structure of a C6F5-substituted derivative (4-Pf), but variable-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance studies suggest a dynamic behavior in solution. B-N fusion results in a large decrease of the HOMO-LUMO gap and dramatically lowers the LUMO energy compared to the all-carbon analogues. 4-Pf in particular shows significant absorbance at greater than 700 nm while being almost transparent throughout the visible region. After encapsulation in the biodegradable polymer DSPE-mPEG2000, 4-Pf nanoparticles (4-Pf-NPs) exhibit good water solubility, high photostability, and an excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of ∼41.8%. 4-Pf-NPs are evaluated both in vitro and in vivo as photothermal therapeutic agents. These results uncover B-N Lewis pair functionalization of PAHs as a promising strategy toward new NIR-absorbing materials for photothermal applications.

The impacts of crude oil contamination on soil microbial populations were explored in seven different polluted areas near oil and gas drilling sites and refineries of Assam, India. Using high-throughput sequencing techniques, the functional genes and metabolic pathways involved in the bioconversion of crude oil contaminants by the indigenous microbial community were explored. Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations in soil samples ranged from 1109.47 to 75,725.33 mg/kg, while total polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations ranged from 0.780 to 560.05 mg/kg. Pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and anthracene had greater quantities than the maximum permitted limits, suggesting a greater ecological risk, in comparison to other polyaromatic hydrocarbons. According to the metagenomic data analysis, the bacterial phyla Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Bacteroides were the most prevalent among all polluted areas. The most prominent hydrocarbon degraders in the contaminated sites included Burkholderia, Mycobacterium, Polaromonas, and Pseudomonas. However, the kinds of pollutants and their concentrations did not correlate with the abundances of respective degrading genes for all polluted locations, as some of the sites with little to low PAH contamination had significant abundances of corresponding functional genes for degradation. Thus, the findings of this study imply that the microbiome of hydrocarbon-contaminated areas, which are biologically involved in the degradation process, has various genes, operons and catabolic pathways that are independent of the presence of a specific kind of contaminant.
