RESUMEN

NAD(P)H-quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) is an essential redox enzyme responsible for redox balance and energy metabolism. Despite of its importance, the brain contains high capacity of polyunsaturated fatty acids and maintains low levels of NQO1 expression. In this study, we examined how levels of NQO1 expression affects cell survival in response to toxic insults causing mitochondrial dysfunction and ferroptosis, and whether NQO1 has a potential as a biomarker in different stressed conditions. Following treatment with rotenone, overexpressed NQO1 in SH-SY5Y cells improved cell survival by reducing mitochondrial reductive stress via increased NAD+ supply without mitochondrial biogenesis. However, NQO1 overexpression boosted lipid peroxidation following treatment with RSL3 and erastin. A lipid droplet staining assay showed increased lipid droplets in cells overexpressing NQO1. In contrast, NQO1 knockdown protected cells against ferroptosis by increasing GPX4, xCT, and the GSH/GSSG system. Also, NQO1 knockdown showed lower iron contents and lipid droplets than non-transfectants and cells overexpressing NQO1, even though it could not attenuate cell death when exposed to rotenone. In summary, our study suggests that different NQO1 levels may have advantages and disadvantages depending on the surrounding environments. Thus, regulating NQO1 expression could be a potential supplementary tool when treating neuronal diseases.

Nitraria roborowskii Kom (NRK), with high economic and ecological value, is mainly distributed in the Qaidam Basin, China. However, research on its chemical components and bioactivities is still rare. In this study, its chemical constituents (52) including 10 ß-carboline alkaloids, nine cyclic peptides, three indole alkaloids, five pyrrole alkaloids, eight phenolic acids and 17 flavonoids were identified tentatively using UPLC-triple-TOF-MS/MS. Notablely, one new ß-carboline alkaloid and five new cyclic peptides were confirmed using MS/MS fragmentation pathways. In addition, experiments in vitro indicated that NRK-C had strong maltase and sucrase inhibitory activities (IC50 of 0.202 and 0.103 mg/mL, respectively). Polysaccharide tolerance experiments confirmed NRK-C (400 mg/kg) was associated with decreased postprandial blood glucose (PBG) in diabetic mice. These results suggested that NRK fruit might be used as a functional ingredient in food products.

This study reports the isolation of four new ß-carboline alkaloids (1-4) and six previously identified alkaloids (5-10) from the roots of Peganum harmala L. Among these compounds, 1 and 2 were characterized as rare ß-carboline-quinazoline dimers exhibiting axial chirality. Compound 3 possessed a unique 6/5/6/7 tetracyclic ring system with an azepine ring, and compound 4 was a novel annomontine ß-carboline. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic data and quantum mechanical calculations. The biosynthetic pathways of 1-3 were proposed. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of some isolates against four cancer cell lines (HL-60, A549, MDA-MB-231, and DU145) was evaluated. Notably, compound 4 exhibited significant cytotoxicity against HL-60, A549, and DU145 cells with IC50 values of 12.39, 12.80, and 30.65 µmol·L-1, respectively. Furthermore, compound 2 demonstrated selective cytotoxicity against HL-60 cells with an IC50 value of 17.32 µmol·L-1.

This study reports valuable information regarding the presence and concentration of a series of photoactive ß-carboline (ßCs) alkaloids (norharmane, harmane, harmine, harmol, harmaline, and harmalol) and their distribution across the floral age and organs of Passiflora caerulea. UHPLC-MS/MS data reported herein reveal that the ßCs' content ranged from 1 to 110 µg kg-1 , depending on the floral organ and age. In certain physiologically relevant organs, such as anthers, ßCs' content was one order of magnitude higher than in other organs, suggesting a special role for ßCs in this specific organ. ßCs' content also varied in a structure-dependent manner. Alkaloids bearing a hydroxyl group at position C(7) of the main ßC ring were present at concentrations one order of magnitude higher than other ßC derivatives investigated. UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy of the flower extracts provided complementary information regarding other biologically relevant groups of chromophores (phenolic/indolic derivatives, flavonoids/carotenes, and chlorophylls). Since flowers are constantly exposed to solar radiation, the presence of photoactive ßCs in floral organs may have several (photo)biological implications that are further discussed.

PURPOSE: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a worldwide health problem. Oral phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5I) are used in its first-line treatment. This study aimed to compare the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment with PDE5I treatment and determine the patient-dependent factors affecting the efficacy of the HBO treatment and duration of action of HBO treatment. METHODS: Adult male patients who presented to the HBO unit for HBO treatment with non-urological indications and had ED based on the International Index for Erectile Function (IIEF-5) constituted the target population of this study. Participants were given HBO treatment (Group 1), no treatment (Group 2), or daily oral tadalafil 5 mg treatment (Group 3). The treatment duration was 1 month. Patients were assessed by IIEF-5 both initially and after the completion of 1 month. RESULTS: There were significant increases in the mean IIEF-5 scores of the patients in Group 1 and Group 3 (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). However, there was no significant improvement in Group 2 (p = 0.496). Also, the post-treatment IIEF-5 scores of Group 1 and Group 3 were significantly higher than Group 2 (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the IIEF-5 scores and ∆IIEF-5 values of Group 1 and Group 3 (p = 0.166, p = 0.093). Evaluation regarding comorbidities revealed that patients with the peripheral vascular disease did not improve with HBO treatment (p = 0.285). CONCLUSION: HBO can improve erectile functions, and it can be a reasonable alternative for patients who cannot use PDE5Is due to comorbidities or treatment side effects.

his comprehensive review is designed to evaluate the anticancer properties of ß-carbolines derived from medicinal plants, with the ultimate goal of assessing their suitability and potential in cancer treatment, management, and prevention. An exhaustive literature survey was conducted on a wide array of ß-carbolines including, but not limited to, harmaline, harmine, harmicine, harman, harmol, harmalol, pinoline, tetrahydroharmine, tryptoline, cordysinin C, cordysinin D, norharmane, and perlolyrine. Various analytical techniques were employed to identify and screen these compounds, followed by a detailed analysis of their anticancer mechanisms. Natural ß-carbolines such as harmaline and harmine have shown promising inhibitory effects on the growth of cancer cells, as evidenced by multiple in vitro and in vivo studies. Synthetically derived ß-carbolines also displayed noteworthy anticancer, neuroprotective, and cognitive-enhancing effects. The current body of research emphasizes the potential of ß-carbolines as a unique source of bioactive compounds for cancer treatment. The diverse range of ß-carbolines derived from medicinal plants can offer valuable insights into the development of new therapeutic strategies for cancer management and prevention.

Targeting bioactive compounds to prevent lipid droplet accumulation in the liver, we explored an antioxidative extract from vanilla bean (Vainilla planifolia) after chemo-selective derivatization through heating and acid modification. The chemical analysis of vanilla bean extract through chemoselective derivatization resulted in the identification of sixteen compounds (34-50) using LC-MS/MS analysis. A ß-carboline alkaloid with a piperidine C-ring and a vanillin moiety at C-1 (34) was identified by molecular networking and diagnostic fragmentation filtering approaches. ß-carboline alkaloid 34 exhibited significant inhibitory activity of lipid droplet accumulation (LDAI) in oleic acid-loaded hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells. The LDAI activity was associated with both activation of lipolysis and suppression of lipogenesis in the cells. The study indicates that crude plant extracts, following chemoselective derivatization, may contain bioactive compounds that could be beneficial in preventing hepatosteatosis and could serve as a source of lead compounds for drug development. This approach may be useful to investigate other mixtures of natural products and food resources.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of dumai (governor meridian) moxibustion combined with low-dose tadalafil in the treatment of ED with decline of vital gate fire. METHODS: We enrolled in this study 130 ED patients with decline of vital gate fire who met the inclusion criteria and equally randomized them into a control and an experimental group, the former treated with low-dose tadalafil tablets at 5 mg once a day while the latter by dumai moxibustion once a week in addition, all for 4 weeks. Of the total number of subjects, 62 in the control group and 63 in the experimental group completed the experiment. We recorded the scores on IIEF-5, Erection Quality Scale (EQS), Erection Hardness Scale (EHS), TCM symptoms and Treatment Satisfaction Scale (TSS) as well as the penile hemodynamic parameters peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV) and resistance index (RI) before and after treatment and compared them between the two groups. RESULTS: The total response rate was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control (87.30% vs 66.13%, P < 0.05). IIEF-5, EQS, EHS and TSS scores, PSV and RI were markedly increased while TCM symptoms and EDV remarkably decreased in both groups after treatment (P < 0.05), even more significantly in the experimental than in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Dumai moxibustion combined with low-dose tadalafil can improve erectile function, increase penile blood flow velocity and alleviate clinical symptoms in ED patients with decline of vital gate fire, with definite clinical effect and safety.

ß-carbolines (harman and norharman) are potentially mutagenic and have been reported in some vegetable oils. Sesame seed oil is obtained from roasted sesame seeds. During sesame oil processing, roasting is the key procedure to aroma enhancement, in which ß-carbolines are produced. Pressed sesame seed oils cover most market share, while leaching solvents are used to extract oils from the pressed sesame cake to improve the utilization of the raw materials. ß-carbolines are nonpolar heterocyclic aromatic amines with good solubility in leaching solvents (n-hexane); therefore, the ß-carbolines in sesame cake migrated to the leaching sesame seed oil. The refining procedures are indispensable for leaching sesame seed oil, in which some small molecules can be reduced. Thus, the critical aim is to evaluate the changes in ß-carboline content during the refining of leaching sesame seed oil and the key process steps for the removal of ß-carbolines. In this work, the levels of ß-carbolines (harman and norharman) in sesame seed oil during chemical refining processes (degumming, deacidification, bleaching and deodorization) have been determined using solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The results indicated that in the entire refining process, the levels of total ß-carbolines greatly decreased, and the adsorption decolorization was the most effective process in reducing ß-carbolines, which might be related to the adsorbent used in the decolorization process. In addition, the effects of adsorbent type, adsorbent dosage and blended adsorbent on ß-carbolines in sesame seed oil during the decolorization process were investigated. It was concluded that oil refining can not only improve the quality of sesame seed oil, but also reduce most of the harmful ß-carbolines.

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) oxidizes neurotransmitters and xenobiotic amines, including vasopressor and neurotoxic amines such as the MPTP neurotoxin. Its inhibitors are useful as antidepressants and neuroprotectants. This work shows that diluted soy sauce (1/3) and soy sauce extracts inhibited human MAO-A and -B isozymes in vitro, which were measured with a chromatographic assay to avoid interferences, and it suggests the presence of MAO inhibitors. Chromatographic and spectrometric studies showed the occurrence of the ß-carboline alkaloids harman and norharman in soy sauce extracts inhibiting MAO-A. Harman was isolated from soy sauce, and it was a potent and competitive inhibitor of MAO-A (0.4 µM, 44 % inhibition). The concentrations of harman and norharman were determined in commercial soy sauces, reaching 243 and 52 µg/L, respectively. Subsequently, the alkaloids 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-ß-carboline-3-carboxylic acid (THCA) and 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-ß-carboline-3-carboxylic acid (MTCA) were identified and analyzed in soy sauces reaching concentrations of 69 and 448 mg/L, respectively. The results show that MTCA was a precursor of harman under oxidative and heating conditions, and soy sauces increased the amount of harman under those conditions. This work shows that soy sauce contains bioactive ß-carbolines and constitutes a dietary source of MAO-A and -B inhibitors.

Two new ß-carboline alkaloids, anemonilins A and B (1-2), and two known ß-carboline alkaloids, flazine (3) and 4-(9H-ß-carbolin-l-yl)-4-oxo-butyric acid (4), were isolated from the roots of Anemone altaica. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated with spectroscopic and spectrometric methods (1D and 2DNMR, HRESIMS). Compounds 2 and 4 significantly attenuated the growth inhibition induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in normal rat kidney tubule epithelioid (NRK52e) cells (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). Furthermore, compound 2 significantly reduced the apoptosis (p < 0.05) and the caspase-3/9 expression of NRK52e cells induced by LPS.

Two new ß-carboline alkaloids (1-2), 1-pyrrolidone propionyl-ß-carboline (1) and 1-(3-hydroxy-2-oxopiperidine-1-ethyl)-4,8-dimethoxyl-ß-carboline (2), named kumujantine W and J respectively, together with ten known compounds (3-12) were isolated from the stems of Picrasma quassioides (D. Don) Benn. Their structures were elucidated from spectral data including 1D and 2D NMR, UV, IR, HR-ESI-MS spectroscopic analysis and ECD calculations as well as by comparison to the reference databases or literature. The anti-inflammatory effects of these alkaloids (1-12) and six other ß-carboline alkaloids (13-18) in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells were evaluated by measuring nitric oxide (NO) concentrations. Among them, compounds 1, 3, 6, 15, and 17 could inhibit the secretion of NO, displaying significant anti-inflammatory activity without affecting cell viability in vitro, and 3D-QSAR analysis further revealed the influence of groups on the activity in ß-carboline alkaloids.

Highly active and novel antifungal compounds are continuously researched from natural products for pesticide development. Picrasma quassioides (D. Don) Benn, a species of Simaroubaceae, is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat colds and upper respiratory infections. In this study, the active ingredients of P. quassioides and their antifungal activities against plant pathogenic fungi are investigated to explore the practical application of the plant in the agricultural field. The results showed that the extracts of P. quassioides exhibited highly significant preventive and curative effects on apple valsa canker (AVC) with a reduction of lesion diameter were 80.28% and 83.63%, respectively, and can improve the resistance of apple trees to a pathogen. Five antifungal compounds, namely, canthin-6-one (T1), nigakinone (T2), 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one (T3), 1-methoxycarbonyl-ß-carboline (T4), and 1-methoxycarbonyl-3-methoxyl-ß-carboline (T5), are isolated from P. quassioides using the bioassay-guided method. This is the first report of 1-methoxycarbonyl-3-methoxyl-ß-carboline as a natural product. Canthin-6-one shows strong in vitro inhibitory activity against 11 species of plant pathogenic fungi, and their EC50 values range from 1.49 to 8.80 mg/L. The control efficacy of canthin-6-one at 2000 mg/L are 87.88% and 94.37% against AVC and 80.10% and 84.73% against apple anthracnose (C. gloeosporioides), respectively. Additionally, V. mali is observed after treatment with cannin-6-one, although microscopic. This is the first study on the control of the secondary metabolites of P. quassioides against plant fungal diseases. The results show that P. quassioides is a potential resource for the development of botanical fungicides.

Monoamine oxidases (MAOs) are an important group of enzymes involved in the degradation of neurotransmitters and their imbalanced mode of action may lead to the development of various neuropsychiatric or neurodegenerative disorders. In this work, we report the results of an in-depth computational study in which we performed a static and a dynamic analysis of a series of substituted ß-carboline natural products, found mainly in roasted coffee and tobacco smoke, that bind to the active site of the MAO-A isoform. By applying molecular docking in conjunction with structure-based pharmacophores and molecular dynamics simulations coupled with dynamic pharmacophores, we extensively investigated the geometric aspects of MAO-A binding. To gain insight into the energetics of binding, we used the linear interaction energy (LIE) method and determined the key anchors that allow productive ß-carboline binding to MAO-A. The results presented herein could be applied in the rational structure-based design and optimization of ß-carbolines towards preclinical candidates that would target the MAO-A enzyme and would be applicable especially in the treatment of mental disorders such as depression.

Ayahuasca is an Amazonian drink, which contains ß-carboline alkaloids and N,N-dimethyltryptamine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the healing potential of decoctions of a commercial mixture, four individual plants and four mixtures of two plants used in the ayahuasca preparation. Thus, the cytotoxic potential of the samples was evaluated and a wound-healing assay was performed with a NHDF cell line. Subsequently, a parallel artificial membrane permeability assay was also performed, to verify if any psychoactive compound could be absorbed by skin fibroblasts. The integrity and permeability of the cell layer were also evaluated, using the transepithelial electrical resistance assay and Lucifer yellow permeability assay, respectively. The compounds absorbed by the cell layer were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a diode array detector. The results showed that only one sample showed cytotoxicity and all the others promoted the migration of skin fibroblasts. Additionally, it was also verified that ß-carbolynic alkaloids and N,N-dimethyltriptamine were not absorbed by the cell layer, and in general, did not interfere with its permeability and integrity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study where ayahuasca's wound-healing potential was evaluated.

Ayahuasca is a psychoactive and psychedelic decoct composed mainly of Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis plant species. The beverage is rich in alkaloids and it is ritualistically used by several indigenous communities of South America as a natural medicine. There are also reports in the literature indicating the prophylaxis potential of Ayahuasca alkaloids against internal parasites. In the present study, Ayahuasca exhibited moderate in vitro activity against Trypanosoma cruzi trypomastigotes (IC50 95.78 µg/mL) compared to the reference drug benznidazole (IC50 2.03 µg/mL). The ß-carboline alkaloid harmine (HRE), isolated from B. caapi, was considered active against the trypomastigotes forms (IC50 6.37), and the tryptamine N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), isolated from P. viridis was also moderately active with IC50 of 21.02 µg/mL. Regarding the in vivo evaluations, no collateral effects were observed. The HRE alone demonstrated the highest trypanocidal activity in a dose-responsive manner (10 and 100 mg/kg). The Ayahuasca and the association between HRE and DMT worsened the parasitaemia, suggesting a modulation of the immunological response during the T. cruzi infection, especially by increasing total Immunoglobulin (IgG) and IgG1 antibody levels. The in silico molecular docking revealed HRE binding with low energy at two sites of the Trypanothione reductase enzyme (TR), which are absent in humans, and thus considered a promissory target for drug discovery. In conclusion, Ayahuasca compounds seem to not be toxic at the concentrations of the in vivo evaluations and can promote trypanocidal effect in multi targets, including control of parasitaemia, immunological modulation and TR enzymatic inhibition, which might benefit the treatments of patients with Chagas' disease. Moreover, the present study also provides scientific information to support the prophylactic potential of Ayahuasca against internal parasites.

BACKGROUND: Patients with neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) need alternative therapies after failure of first-line therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This phase II trial evaluated lurbinectedin, a selective inhibitor of oncogenic transcription, at 3.2 mg/m2 as a 1-h intravenous infusion every 3 weeks in 32 NETs patients treated in the second- or third-line setting. The primary efficacy endpoint was overall response rate (ORR) according to RECIST v1.1 assessed by the investigators. Secondary endpoints included duration of response (DoR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and safety. RESULTS: Two of 31 evaluable patients had confirmed partial responses (ORR = 6.5%; 95%CI, 0.8-21.4%). Median DoR was 4.7 months (95% CI, 4.0-5.4 months), median PFS was 1.4 months (95% CI, 1.2-3.0 months) and median OS was 7.4 months (95% CI, 3.4-16.2 months). Lurbinectedin showed an acceptable, predictable and manageable safety profile. The most common grade 3/4 toxicity was neutropenia (40.6%; grade 4, 12.4%; febrile neutropenia, 3.1%). CONCLUSIONS: Considering the exploratory aim of this trial that evaluated a heterogeneous population of NETs patients, and the signs of antitumour activity observed (two confirmed partial responses and seven long disease stabilisations), further development of lurbinectedin is warranted in a more selected NETs population. Eurycoma longifolia (EL) and Eurycoma harmandiana (EH) are natural medicinal plants belonging to the Simaroubaceae family, and are well-known for their ability to enhance male sexual performance. The present study investigated the phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitory activity of intact roots of EL and EH. Additionally, canthin-6-one alkaloids, ß-carboline alkaloids, and quassinoids were also screened for PDE-5 inhibitory activity. We developed in vitro root and callus cultures of EL and EH to determine their PDE-5 inhibitory activity. Our results indicated that canthin-6-one alkaloids, which include canthin-6-one-9-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside, 9-methoxycanthin-6-one, canthin-6-one, and 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one, exhibited PDE-5 enzymatic inhibitory activity, with IC50 values of 2.86±0.23, 3.30±1.03, 4.31±0.52, and 4.66±1.13 µM, respectively. The ethanolic extract of the intact roots of EL and EH, and the in vitro root culture of EH had large amounts of canthin-6-one alkaloids (1.50±0.04, 2.12±0.03, and 3.48±0.08 mg/g dry weight, respectively), and showed potent PDE-5 inhibition. Our findings indicate that in vitro root cultures of EH may be used to replace intact plants, and canthin-6-one-9-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside should be further investigated for development as a health supplement.

CdpNPT from Aspergillus fumigatus is a fungal indole prenyltransferase (IPT) with remarkable substrate promiscuity to generate prenylated compounds. Our first investigation of the catalytic potential of CdpNPT against a ß-carboline, harmol (1), revealed that the enzyme also accepts 1 as the prenyl acceptor with dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) as the prenyl donor and selectively prenylates the C-6 position of 1 by the "regular-type" dimethylallylation to produce 6-(3-dimethylallyl)harmol (2). Furthermore, our X-ray crystal structure analysis of the C-His6-tagged CdpNPT (38-440) truncated mutant complexed with 1 and docking studies of DMAPP to the crystal structure of the CdpNPT (38-440) mutant suggested that CdpNPT could employ the two-step prenylation system to produce 2.

BACKGROUND: Canthin-6-one (CO) is an active ingredient found in Picrasma quassioides (D.Don) Benn. (PQ) that displays various biological activities including anti-inflammatory properties. Several studies reported PQ displayed neuroprotective activities, but its effects on astrocytes have not yet been investigated. Astrocytes are crucial regulators of neuroinflammatory responses under pathological conditions in the central nervous system (CNS). Proinflammatory astrocytes can induce the blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown, which plays a key role in the progression of neurodegenerative disorder (ND). PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of CO in LPS-induced astrocyte activation and its underlying mechanisms in protecting the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in vitro. METHODS: Mouse astrocytes (C8-D1A) were activated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) with or without CO pretreatment. Effects of CO on astrocyte cell viability, secretions of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and nitric oxide (NO) were determined. Intracellular transcriptions and translations of proinflammatory mediators, molecular signaling, [Ca2+] and the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were evaluated by RT-PCR, western blotting, and flow cytometry, respectively. Astrocyte-conditioned medium (ACM) was further prepared for incubating endothelial monolayer (bEnd.3) grown on transwell. Endothelial disruptions were evaluated by transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER), FITC-dextran permeability and monocyte adhesion assays. Endothelial tight junctions (TJs) and molecular signaling pathways were evaluated by immunofluorescence staining and western blotting. RESULTS: CO attenuated LPS-induced expression of astrocytic proinflammatory mediators (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, NO) and inhibited deleterious molecular activities including inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), p-NFκB and p-STAT3 in astrocytes. Incubation of ACM collected from CO-treated astrocytes significantly ameliorated endothelial disruptions, reduced expressions of endothelial cytokine receptors (IL-6R, gp130 (IL-6RB), TNFR and IL-1R), suppressed proinflammatory pathways, MAPKs (p-AKT, p-MEK, p-ERK, p-p38, p-JNK) and p-STAT3, restored endothelial stabilizing pathways (p-Rac 1) and upregulated beneficial endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates for the first time CO exhibited potent protective effects against astrocyte-mediated proinflammatory responses and associated endothelial barrier disruptions.
