Introduction: type 2 Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease with devastating effects on patients and results in numerous healthcare challenges in terms of its management and the cost burden among the affected. Successful management involves maintaining optimal glycemic control to prevent complications, with adherence to antidiabetic medications playing a crucial role in achieving this objective. Additionally, maintaining a healthy electrolyte balance is key for overall well-being and physiological function. However, the correlation between glycated hemoglobin and electrolyte balance remains under investigated, particularly in patients with suboptimal adherence. The aim of this research was to study the relationship between glycated hemoglobin and electrolytes among diabetic patients with poor adherence to antidiabetic medications. Methods: this study was conducted at Samburu County Referral Hospital in Samburu County, Kenya. We employed a descriptive cross-sectional design focusing on adult diabetic patients aged 18 years and above who had visited the diabetic clinic over a three-month period. To evaluate their adherence levels, we employed a Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8. Seventy-two diabetic patients who got adherence level scores of < 6 were categorized as having low adherence and their blood samples were collected for measuring glycated hemoglobin levels and electrolytes levels particularly potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and chloride. Relationship between electrolytes and glycated hemoglobin among diabetic patients with poor adherence to antidiabetics was determined using Karl Pearson correlation. Results: among the study participants, the lowest hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) level recorded was 5.1% while the highest was 15.0% and the majority (41.7%) fell within the HbA1c range of 5-7%. A high proportion of individuals (58.3%) with poor adherence to antidiabetics had elevated HbA1c levels, indicating poor glycemic control. The correlations observed between glycated hemoglobin and electrolytes which included magnesium, sodium, chloride, calcium and phosphorus was r= -0.07, -0.32, -0.05 -0.24 and -0.04 respectively. Conclusion: this study concluded that there is a relationship between electrolytes and glycated hemoglobin among diabetic patients with poor adherence to antidiabetics. A statistically significant negative correlation was observed between glycated hemoglobin and calcium level (r=-0.2398 P ≤0.05) and also sodium (r=-0.31369 P≤0.05). A negative correlation (P≥0.05) was observed between phosphorus, magnesium, chloride and potassium with HbA1c levels though not statistically significant.

Osteoporosis stands out as a prevalent skeletal ailment, prompting exploration into potential treatments, including dietary strontium ion supplements. This study assessed the efficacy of supplementation of three strontium forms-strontium citrate (SrC), strontium ranelate (SrR), and strontium chloride (SrCl)-for enhancing bone structure in 50 female SWISS mice, aged seven weeks. In total, 40 mice underwent ovariectomy, while 10 underwent sham ovariectomy. Ovariectomized (OVX) mice were randomly assigned to the following groups: OVX (no supplementation), OVX + SrR, OVX + SrC, and OVX + SrCl, at concentrations equivalent to the molar amount of strontium. After 16 weeks, micro-CT examined trabeculae and cortical bones, and whole-bone strontium content was determined. Results confirm strontium administration increased bone tissue mineral density (TMD) and Sr content, with SrC exhibiting the weakest effect. Femur morphometry showed limited Sr impact, especially in the OVX + SrC group. This research highlights strontium's potential in bone health, emphasizing variations in efficacy among its forms.

In this study, Fe0@Fe3O4 was synthesized and used to remove U(VI) from groundwater. Different experimental conditions and cycling experiments were used to investigate the performance of Fe0@Fe3O4 in the U(VI) removal, and the XRD, TEM, XPS and XANES techniques were employed to characterize the Fe0@Fe3O4. The results showed that the U(VI) removal efficiency of Fe0@Fe3O4 was 48.5 mg/g that was higher than the sum of removal efficiency of Fe0 and Fe3O4. The uranium on the surface of Fe0@Fe3O4 mainly existed as U(IV), followed by U(VI) and U(V). The Fe0 content decreased after reaction, while the Fe3O4 content increased. Based on the results of experiments and characterization, the enhanced removal efficiency of Fe0@Fe3O4 was attributed to the synergistic effect of Fe0 and Fe3O4 in which Fe3O4 accelerated the Fe0 corrosion that promoted the progressively formation of Fe(II) that promoted the reduction of adsorbed U(VI) to U(IV) and incorporated U(VI) to U(V). The performance of Fe0@Fe3O4 at near-neutrality condition was better than at acidic and alkalic conditions. The chloride ions, sulfate ions and nitrate ions showed minor effect on the Fe0@Fe3O4 performance, while carbonate ions exhibited significant inhibition. The metal cations showed different effect on the Fe0@Fe3O4 performance. The removal efficiency of Fe0@Fe3O4 decreased with the number of cycling experiment. Ionizing radiation could regenerate the used Fe0@Fe3O4. This study provides insight into the U(VI) removal by Fe0@Fe3O4 in aqueous solution.

RESUMEN

The study of the localization of secondary metabolites in both plants and the cell cultures on the intravital sections is hampered by the difficulty of obtaining thin, correctly oriented sections. Techniques for fixing tissues in resins allow these difficulties to be overcome. Properly selected tissue fixation techniques allow using different dyes to identify the compound of interest. In addition, some components of tissue fixation can act as fixatives and as a dye for identifying secondary metabolites. For example, osmium tetroxide, which fixes lipids in tissues, stains phenolic compounds black. This paper describes methods for the detection of phenolic compounds in morphogenic callus culture of buckwheat using osmium tetroxide, Toluidine Blue O dye, and ferric chloride as dyes in epoxy resin-embedded cell culture with double fixation of the material and when material fixed in Karnovsky's fixative.

Quenching is an important step to terminate disinfection during preparation of disinfected water samples for the analysis of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). However, an incomplete quenching might result in continued reactions of residual chlorine, whereas an excessive quenching might decompose target DBPs. Therefore, an adequate quenching to achieve simultaneous disinfection termination and DBP preservation is of particular importance. In this study, the two-stage reaction kinetics of chlorine and three commonly used quenching agents (i.e., ascorbic acid, sodium thiosulfate, and sodium sulfite) were determined. Stopping quenching during the first stage prevented interactions of residual chlorine with natural organic matter. Complete quenching was achieved by minimizing the quenching time for ascorbic acid and sodium sulfite, while limiting the quenching time to less than 3 min for sodium thiosulfate. At the optimized quenching times, the molar ratios (MRs) of quenching agent to chlorine were 1.05, 1.10, and 0.75 for ascorbic acid, sodium sulfite, and sodium thiosulfate, respectively. The destructive effects of the three quenching agents on total organic halogen (TOX) followed the rank order of ascorbic acid (33.7-64.8 %) < sodium sulfite (41.6-72.8 %) < sodium thiosulfate (43.3-73.2 %), and the destructive effects on aliphatic DBPs also followed the rank order of ascorbic acid (29.5-44.5 %) < sodium sulfite (34.9-51.9 %) < sodium thiosulfate (46.9-53.2 %). For total organic chlorine (TOCl) and aliphatic DBPs, the quenching behavior itself had more significant destructive effect than the quenching agent type/dose and quenching time, but for total organic bromine (TOBr), the destructive effect caused by quenching agent type/dose and quenching time was more significant. High-dose, long-duration quenching enhanced the reduction of TOX, but had little effect on aliphatic DBPs. Additionally, the three quenching agents reduced the levels of halophenols (except for tribromophenol), while maintained or increased the levels of tribromophenol, halobenzoic/salicylic acids, and halobenzaldehydes/salicylaldehydes. To achieve adequate quenching for overall DBP analysis in chlorinated water samples, it is recommended to use ascorbic acid at a quenching agent-to-chlorine MR of 1.0 for a quenching time of < 0.5 h.

During a series of pathology surveys in four production complexes of a U.S. broiler integrator, the technical services veterinarians of an animal health company noted a high incidence of severe gizzard erosions and ulcerations (GEU), prompting further clinical investigation and a battery trial. No growth-promoting antibiotics or ionophore coccidiostats were used during the period of these surveys. All used tribasic copper chloride (TBCC) at ≤120 ppm added copper in broiler rations. Clostridium perfringens was isolated from 83% and 67% of gizzard lesions cultured in two complexes, and cecal C. perfringens most probable number determinations were higher in severely affected than in mildly affected or unaffected birds. Histopathology revealed both acellular koilin fusion defects characteristic of copper toxicity, as well as inflammatory cell infiltrates. Intralesional bacilli suggestive of C. perfringens were noted in 78% of affected flocks examined. Species E Aviadenovirus was isolated from one bird in one complex, and that bird had a single intranuclear inclusion body; no other flocks had Adenoviruses isolated or detected on PCR, nor any inclusion bodies. Other viruses detected were thought to be incidental. A pilot study using feed with supplemental copper from TBCC or copper sulfate and challenge with one of the isolated C. perfringens strains reproduced the lesions. A battery study was conducted with an unchallenged negative control group fed a diet with 16 ppm added copper, a group fed the control diet and orally challenged with 108 organisms of a field strain of C. perfringens at 21 and 22 days, and a group treated with the same diet containing 250 ppm added copper from TBCC and orally challenged with C. perfringens. Birds were necropsied at 23 and 28 days. All challenged groups developed lesions, with those receiving both TBCC and C. perfringens having significantly higher gross and histopathological lesion scores than the unchallenged negative controls. Lesions were qualitatively similar to those in the field and contained suspected C. perfringens bacilli. Because the levels of TBCC used in the commercial birds and in the battery trial generally have been considered safe, and because C. perfringens is usually regarded as a pathogen of the lower GI tract, the possible association of these two agents with GEU is a novel observation and warrants further investigation.

Durante una serie de estudios de patología en cuatro complejos de producción de un integrador de pollos de engorde de los Estados Unidos, veterinarios de servicio técnico de una empresa de salud animal observaron una alta incidencia de erosiones y ulceraciones severas de la molleja (GEU), lo que motivó una mayor investigación clínica y un estudio en batería. BACKGROUND: Breast carcinoma is the second leading cause of cancer related-deaths among women. Given its high incidence and mortality rates, searching for innovative treatments represents a formidable challenge within the medical and pharmaceutical industries. This study delves into the preparation, characterization, and anticancer properties of silver chloride nanoparticles (AgCLNPs) as a novel therapeutic approach for breast cancer cells, employing a biological synthesis method. METHODS: This investigation, utilized spirulina platensis extract to synthesize silver chloride nanoparticles (AgCLNPs-SP). The formation, size, and structure of the nanoparticles were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray crystallography (XRD), and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Additionally, the apoptotic and anticancer properties of AgCLNPs-SP were thoroughly examined. RESULTS: The results, revealed AgCLNPs-SP to exhibit a spherical, morphology with a size range of 40-70 nm, primarily silver and chlorine. The dose-dependent response of AgCLNP-SP against MDA-MB231 cells was ascertained using the MTT Assay, with an IC50 value of 34 µg/mL. Furthermore, the Annexin V-FITC/ PI apoptosis assay demonstrated a significant proportion of early apoptosis (43.67%) in MDA-MB231 cells. This apoptosis process was substantiated by up-regulation in mRNA expression levels of P53, CAD, and Bax genes, alongside a down-regulation of the of bcl2 gene expression. Additionally, an augmented production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), cell cycle analysis, Hoechst staining assay, and evaluated levels of Caspase - 3, -8 and - 9 were observed in AgCLNPs-SP-treated MDA_MB231 cancer cells. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the results suggest that AgCLNPs-SP may be a promising agent for treating breast cancer.

In this study, recovery of phenolic substances with Soxhlet extraction, (SE) ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAS), and supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) extraction methods from chemical sludge obtained with chemical precipitation (FeCl3/PACS, Ca(OH)2/PACS, perlite/PACS, FeCl3/cationic polyelectrolyte) of lemon processing wastewater was investigated. The effect of used coagulants/flocculants and pH on COD and total phenolic substance content (TPC) removal was researched. Recovered phenolic substance profiles were also determined with HPLC-DAD. Additionally, response surface methodology was used to determine optimum treatment conditions. ANOVA analysis showed that pH is a more important variable than coagulant/flocculant doses for all chemical precipitation experimental sets. The highest removal efficiencies for COD and TPC was obtained in FeCl3/PACS (COD: 72.0 %, TPC: 93.7 %). Optimum dose values were determined as pH: 4, FeCl3: 3000 mg/L, PACS: 400 mg/L for FeCl3/PACS, pH: 6.5, Ca(OH)2: 1500 mg/L, PACS: 300 mg/L for Ca(OH)2/PACS, pH: 5.5, PACS: 7000 mg/L, perlite: 50 g/L for perlite/PACS, pH: 4.5, FeCl3: 500 mg/L, polyelectrolyte: 4 mg/L for FeCl3/polyelectrolyte. TPC removal efficiencies were determined as 55 %, 35 %, 57 % and 58 % in these conditions, respectively. Maximum TPC in extracts was determined as 39.03 mg GAE/g extract, 8.81 mg GAE/g extract, and 4.34 mg GAE/g extract for SE, UAS, and SC-CO2, respectively. TPC recovery efficiencies (RTPC) for all chemical sludge were SE > UAS > SC-CO2. Additionally, the TPC profile has shown a difference depending on the extraction method. According to the results of this study, it was concluded that the coagulation-flocculation process may be a suitable alternative for fruit juice processing industry wastewater in terms of both reducing environmental pollution and recovering polyphenolics from formed sludge. Consequently, this study presented a different perspective on the recovery from wastes with valuable substance recovery from chemical sludge.

The iron materials are commonly employed to enhance resource recovery from waste activated sludge through anaerobic digestion (AD). The influence of different iron sources, such as Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and FeCl3 on methane production and phosphorus transformation in AD systems with thermal hydrolyzed sludge as the substrate was assessed in this study. The results indicated that iron oxides effectively promote methane yield and methane production rate in AD systems, resulting in a maximum increase in methane production by 1.6 times. Soluble FeCl3 facilitated the removal of 92.3% of phosphorus from the supernatant through the formation of recoverable precipitates in the sludge. The introduction of iron led to an increase in the abundance of bacteria responsible for hydrolysis and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. However, the enrichment of microbial communities varied depending on the specific irons used. This study provides support for AD systems that recover phosphorus and produce methane efficiently from waste sludge.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is an effective treatment for several renal disorders, including renal transplant rejection. However, repeated plasma exchanges can result in various metabolic disturbances and complications. We present a 61-year old male with a medical history of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, successfully treated multiple myeloma, and a post-mortem kidney transplantation 7 months prior to presentation. The patient was hospitalized with an antibody-mediated transplant rejection for which treatment with methylprednisolone, TPE with a 40 g/L albumin solution as a replacement fluid, and intravenous immunoglobulins was initiated. After four TPE treatments, the patient developed gastrointestinal complaints and muscle weakness. Despite daily oral bicarbonate supplementation, laboratory tests revealed a hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis: bicarbonate 11.7 mmol/L, chloride 111 mmol/L, and sodium 138 mmol/L. Metabolic acidosis due to citrate accumulation was ruled out with a normal total-to-ionized calcium ratio. After treatment with intravenous bicarbonate supplementation, the symptoms disappeared. Analysis of the albumin solution showed a chloride concentration of 132 mmol/L. This is the first case that describes severe metabolic acidosis after multiple sessions of TPE with an albumin solution in a patient with impaired renal function. The hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis is the result of administration of large volumes of an albumin solution with high chloride concentrations. Special attention should be paid to the acid-base balance during TPE in patients with impaired renal function. Future research should investigate the incidence of hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis during TPE in patients with impaired renal function.

Ricca assays allow the direct introduction of compounds extracted from plants or the organisms that attack them into the leaf vasculature. Using chromatographic fractionation of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) leaf extracts, we found glutamate was the most active low mass elicitor of membrane depolarization. However, other known elicitors of membrane depolarization are generated in the wound response. These include unstable aglycones generated by glucosinolate (GSL) breakdown. None of the aglycone-derived GSL-breakdown products, including nitriles and isothiocyanates, that we tested using Ricca assays triggered electrical activity. Instead, we found that glutathione and the GSL-derived compound sulforaphane glutathione triggered membrane depolarizations. These findings identify a potential link between GSL breakdown and glutathione in the generation of membrane depolarizing signals. Noting that the chromatographic fractionation of plant extracts can dilute or exchange ions, we found that Cl- caused glutamate receptor-like3.3-dependent membrane depolarizations. In summary, we show that, in addition to glutamate, glutathione derivatives as well as chloride ions will need to be considered as potential elicitors of wound-response membrane potential change. Finally, by introducing aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) extracts or the flagellin-derived peptide flg22 into the leaf vasculature we extend the use of Ricca assays for the exploration of insect/plant and bacteria/plant interactions.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the effects of 6-gingerol-rich fraction of Zingiber officinale (6-GIRIFZO) on mercury chloride (HgCl2)-induced neurotoxicity in Wistar rats. Thirty -five male Wistar rats weighing between (150-200 g) were divided randomly into five groups (n = 7): group 1: control, received 0.5 mL of normal saline, group 2: received HgCl2 (5 mg/kg), group 3: received N-acetylcysteine (NAC) (50 mg/kg) as well as HgCl2 (5 mg/kg), group 4: received 6-GIRIFZO (100 mg/kg) and HgCl2 (5 mg/kg), group 5: had 6-GIRIFZO (200 mg/kg) and HgCl2 (5 mg/kg), consecutively for 14 days. On the day14, the rats were subjected to behavioural tests using a Morris water maze and novel object recognition tests. The rats were then euthanized to obtain brain samples for the determination of biochemical parameters (acetylcholinesterase (AchE), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), tumor necrosis factor- alpha (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin-6 (IL-6)) using standard methods. The result revealed a significant increase in escape latency and a significant decrease in recognition ratio in the rats that were exposed to HgCl2 only. However, 6-GIRIFZO produced a significant reduction in the escape latency and (p < 0.05) increase in the recognition ratio. Similarly, HgCl2 exposure caused a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the brain SOD, GPx, CAT, GSH with increased brain levels of MDA, NO, AchE, TNF-α, NF-κB, IL-1ß and IL-6. Similarly to the standard drug, NAC, 6-GIRIFZO (100 and 200 mg/kg) significantly (p < 0.05) increased brain SOD, GPx, CAT, and GSH levels with decreased concentrations of MDA, NO, AchE, TNF-α, NF-κB, IL-1ß and IL-6. Also, pre-treatment with 6-GIRIFZO prevented the HgCl2-induced morphological aberrations in the rats. This study concludes that 6-GIRIFZO prevents HgCl2-induced cognitive deficit via reduction of brain inflammation as well as oxidative stress in rats.

We have previously shown that an excess of deoxycorticosterone acetate and high sodium chloride intake (DOCA/salt) in one-renin gene mice induces a high urinary Na/K ratio, hypokalemia, and cardiac and renal hypertrophy in the absence of hypertension. Dietary potassium supplementation prevents DOCA/salt-induced pathological processes. In the present study, we further study whether DOCA/salt-treated mice progressively develop chronic inflammation and fibrosis in the kidney and whether dietary potassium supplementation can reduce the DOCA/salt-induced renal pathological process. Results showed that (1) long-term DOCA/salt-treated one-renin gene mice developed severe kidney injuries including tubular/vascular hypertrophy, mesangial/interstitial/perivascular fibrosis, inflammation (lymphocyte's immigration), proteinuria, and high serum creatinine in the absence of hypertension; (2) there were over-expressed mRNAs of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), fibronectin, collagen type I and III, interferon-inducible protein-10 (IP-10), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP1), transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), osteopontin, Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB)/P65, and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1; and (3) dietary potassium supplementation normalized urinary Na/K ratio, hypokalemia, proteinuria, and serum creatinine, reduced renal hypertrophy, inflammations, and fibrosis, and down-regulated mRNA expression of fibronectin, Col-I and III, TGF-ß, TNF-α, osteopontin, and ICAM without changes in the blood pressure. The results provide new evidence that potassium and sodium may modulate proinflammatory and fibrotic genes, leading to chronic renal lesions independent of blood pressure.

The presence of 3-monochloropropane-1,2 diol ester (3-MCPDE) and glycidyl ester (GE) in processed palm oils is of concern, as these oils are widely used for edible purposes. The mitigation method studied here optimizes the removal of chloride through water washing of crude palm oil (CPO), to limit the formation of 3-MCPDE. The contaminant removal obtained via washing CPO supports the quantitative findings. By utilizing 5% water in the washing step, water-soluble chlorides in CPO are removed by up to 76%, resulting in a 71% reduction of 3-MCPDE to within statutory limits. In this study, a linear correlation was developed between the chloride and the corresponding 3-MCPDE with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99. Using the correlations, 1.0 mg/kg of 3-MCPDE in refined, bleached and deodorized palm oil (RBDPO) will be obtained from CPO with 1.2 mg/kg chloride with 7% wash water usage. The study also showed minor GE reduction between 7 and 11% was attained after water washing.

The presented "PubChemQC B3LYP/6-31G*//PM6" data set is composed of the electronic properties of 85,938,443 molecules, encompassing a broad spectrum of molecules from essential compounds to biomolecules with a molecular weight up to 1000. These molecules account for 94.0% of the original PubChem Compound catalog as of August 29, 2016. The electronic properties, including orbitals, orbital energies, total energies, dipole moments, and other pertinent properties, were computed by using the B3LYP/6-31G* and PM6 methods. The data set, available in three formats, namely, GAMESS quantum chemistry program files, selected JSON output files, and a PostgreSQL database, provides researchers with the ability to query molecular properties. It is further subdivided into five subdata sets for more specific data. The first two subsets encompass molecules with carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen with molecular weights under 300 and 500, respectively. The third and fourth subsets incorporate molecules with carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur, fluorine, and chlorine, with molecular weights under 300 and 500, respectively. The fifth subset comprises molecules with carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur, fluorine, chlorine, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, with a molecular weight of under 500. The coefficients of determination for the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gap range from 0.892 (for CHON500) to 0.803 (for the whole data set). These comprehensive results pave the way for applications in drug discovery and materials science, among others. BACKGROUND: γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a bioactive compound produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The diversity of GABA production in the Lactococcus genus is poorly understood. Genotypic and phenotypic approaches were therefore combined in this study to shed light on this diversity. A comparative genomic study was performed on the GAD-system genes (gadR, gadC and gadB) involved in GABA production in 36 lactococci including L. lactis and L. cremoris species. In addition, 132 Lactococcus strains were screened for GABA production in culture medium supplemented with 34 mM L-glutamic acid with or without NaCl (0.3 M). RESULTS: Comparative analysis of the nucleotide sequence alignments revealed the same genetic organization of the GAD system in all strains except one, which has an insertion sequence element (IS981) into the PgadCB promoter. This analysis also highlighted several deletions including a 3-bp deletion specific to the cremoris species located in the PgadR promoter, and a second 39-bp deletion specific to L. cremoris strains with a cremoris phenotype. Phenotypic analysis revealed that GABA production varied widely, but it was higher in L. lactis species than in L. cremoris, with an exceptional GABA production of up to 14 and 24 mM in two L. lactis strains. Moreover, adding chloride increased GABA production in some L. cremoris and L. lactis strains by a factor of up to 16 and GAD activity correlated well with GABA production. CONCLUSIONS: This genomic analysis unambiguously characterized the cremoris phenotype of L. cremoris species and modified GadB and GadR proteins explain why the corresponding strains do not produce GABA. Finally, we found that glutamate decarboxylase activity revealing GadB protein amount, varied widely between the strains and correlated well with GABA production both with and without chloride. As this protein level is associated to gene expression, the regulation of GAD gene expression was identified as a major contributor to this diversity.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the primary health problems linked to the decrease of acetylcholine in cholinergic neurons and elevation in oxidative stress. Myco-fabrication of ZnO-NPs revealed excellent biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory potentials. This study aims to determine if two distinct doses of myco-fabricated ZnO-NPs have a positive impact on behavioral impairment and several biochemical markers associated with inflammation and oxidative stress in mice that have been treated by aluminum chloride (AlCl3) to induce AD. Sixty male mice were haphazardly separated into equally six groups. Group 1 was injected i.p. with 0.5 ml of deionized water daily during the experiment. Mice in group 2 received AlCl3 (50 mg/kg/day i.p.). Groups 3 and 4 were treated i.p. with 5 and 10 mg/kg/day of ZnO-NPs only, respectively. Groups 5 and 6 were given i.p. 5 and 10 mg/kg/day ZnO-NPs, respectively, add to 50 mg/kg/day AlCl3. Results showed that the AlCl3 caused an increase in the escape latency time and a reduction in the time spent in the target quadrant, indicating a decreased improvement in learning and memory. Moreover, acetylcholinesterase enzyme (AChE) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin 1ß (IL-1ß) levels were significantly increased, and the content of glutathione (GSH), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), as well as levels of serotonin and dopamine, were decreased in brain tissues only in AlCl3 treated mice. However, treatment of mice with myco-fabrication of ZnO-NPs at doses of 5 or 10 mg/kg improves learning and memory function through ameliorate all the previous parameters in the AD mice group. The low dose of 5 mg/kg is more effective than a high dose of 10 mg/kg. In accordance with these findings, myco-fabricated ZnO-NPs could enhance memory and exhibit a protective influence against memory loss caused by AlCl3.

INTRODUCTION: Hemodialysis uses municipal water that must be strictly purified and sterilized to be used for that procedure. Large amounts of decontaminants are often used, such as chlorine, and if these compounds are not subsequently removed they can be transferred to the blood of patients causing complications including methemoglobinemia. METHODS: In this case series study, dialysis patients in one unit were evaluated. We reviewed clinical characteristics and laboratory findings obtained on the day when the water supply was disinfected with chlorine, with the aim to quantify methemoglobin concentrations. Our objective was to characterize the clinical presentation and management of patients who presented with methemoglobinemia on a specific index day. We also reviewed reported cases in the literature regarding this underreported complication. RESULTS: Eight patients who presented with chlorine intoxication were evaluated. The methemoglobin concentrations were between 1.3% and 7.9% (reference value 0-1%). We believe this to be caused by water containing 0.78 mg/L of total chlorine. Seven patients presented with cyanosis, 4 with dizziness, 6 with dark brown blood, 4 with dyspnea, and 4 with headache and hemolytic anemia. Subjects were treated with supplemental oxygen, methylene blue, intravenous vitamin C, blood transfusions, and increased doses of erythropoietin. No patient died, and all continued with their usual hemodialysis sessions. CONCLUSION: Acute chlorine intoxication transferred by the water used during hemodialysis sessions can present with methemoglobinemia accompanied by cyanosis, oxygen desaturation, and hemolytic anemia. Chlorine levels should be carefully monitored in the water used for hemodialysis treatment.

Cementitious composite is one of the most widely used construction materials around the world, but cement production is accompanied by energy waste and CO2 emission. Wollastonite, a natural fibrous silicate mineral, can be a potential supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) for cementitious composite owing to its similar calcium silicate system, and it has an eco-friendly and convenient production process. Furthermore, its unique fibrous structure can possibly act as reinforcement for the cement matrix. In view of this, this study aimed to investigate the effects of different sizes (the median diameter of 3 µm, 6 µm, 9 µm and 12 µm) and contents (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% by mass) of wollastonite combined with 5% silica fume on the mechanical strength, durability and microstructure of cementitious composite by compressive test, flexural test, shear test, rapid chloride migration test, sulfate corrosion test, X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The results showed that the strength and durability of samples increased and then decreased as wollastonite content increased. An addition of 10% wollastonite into the cement matrix increased compressive strength, flexural strength and shear strength by 6.22%, 29.3% and 18.4%, respectively. However, an addition of 5% wollastonite was found to be more beneficial for improving resistance to chloride and sulfate corrosion. Additionally, samples prepared with 3 µm wollastonite performed better, which can be attributed to the fact that the small size of wollastonite contributed to both the filling effect and the skeletal support and bridging effect of microfibers. The CO2 emissions of cementitious composites decreased as the wollastonite percentage increased. The findings confirm that natural wollastonite as SCMs for cementitious composite has performance enhancement and environmental benefits, however, it is recommended that the wollastonite content should not exceed 15%.
