RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of heat stress in late gestation independent of maternal reduced feed intake on performance, blood hormones and metabolites, and immune responses of dairy calves from birth through weaning. A total of 30 multiparous Holstein cows at 45 d before expected calving were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups: (1) thermal neutral (CL, n = 10) conditions with ad libitum feed intake (10% of refusals on an as-fed basis); (2) pair-fed thermal neutral (CLPF, n = 10) conditions to reduce feed intake to levels similar to the heat stress (HS) group while reared under thermoneutral conditions (80% of the CL group); or (3) heat stress (HS, n = 10) conditions with ad libitum feed intake. Pair-feeding was conducted to quantify the confounding effects of dissimilar feed intake. Calves (10/group) born to cows that were exposed to cooling (IU-CL), pair-feeding (IU-CLPF), or heat stress (IU-HS) were used from birth through weaning. After birth, all the calves were managed under identical conditions. IU-HS calves had lower birth weight, and hip height at birth and 14 d of age. Compared with IU-CL and IU-CLPF calves, IU-HS calves had lower serum concentration of IgG and apparent efficiency of IgG absorption but higher serum insulin concentrations. Cortisol concentration in serum was higher in IU-HS and IU-CLPF calves compared to IU-CL calves. The neutrophil percentage was lower in IU-CL calves than in IU-HS and IU-CLPF calves. Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio was higher in IU-HS calves compared to IU-CLPF and IU-CL calves. The mRNA expression of TNFα of IU-HS calves was downregulated compared with IU-CL and IU-CLPF calves. In summary, maternal HS during late gestation reduces calf birth weight and dramatically alters blood hormones and metabolites, but its effect on immune system function was not independent of maternal reduced feed intake.

The study is part of a research effort investigating potential associations between genomic variation and fertility of Holstein cows. The objective was to compare the reproductive performance of Holstein cows in 3 categories of 2 reproductive indices (RI) that were developed for the allocation of cows in a ranking for potential fertility, based on the predicted probability of pregnancy. The associations between categories of the developed indices and multiple fertility variables in a large multistate population of Holstein cows were tested. In addition, we analyzed associations among the RI categories with milk yield and survival. Based on phenotypic information from individual cows, 2 reproductive indices (RI1 and RI2) were developed, representing a predicted probability that a cow will become pregnant at first artificial insemination postpartum, as a function of explanatory variables used in a logistic model. Data from a total of 11,733 cows calving in 16 farms located in 4 regions of the United States (Northeast, Midwest, Southeast, and Southwest) were available. Cows were enrolled at parturition and monitored weekly for reproductive events, health status, milk yield, and survival. To develop the indices, potential significant effects were initially tested by univariate analyses. Effects with P ≤ 0.05 were offered to the multivariate analysis, and the final models were determined through backward elimination, considering potentially significant interactions. The final model for RI1 included the random effect of farm and a complement of significant fixed effects as explanatory variables influencing a pregnancy outcome: (1) incidence of retained fetal membranes; (2) metritis; (3) clinical endometritis; (4) lameness at 35 days in milk (DIM); (5) resumption of postpartum ovulation by 50 DIM; (6) season of calving; and (7) parity number. The model for RI2 included (1) parity number; (2) body condition score at 40 DIM; (3) incidence of retained fetal membranes; (4) metritis; (5) resumption of postpartum ovulation by 50 DIM; (6) region; (7) subclinical ketosis; (8) mastitis; (9) clinical endometritis; and (10) milk yield at the first milk test after calving; as well as the interaction effects of postpartum resumption of ovulation by 50 DIM × region; mastitis × region; and milk yield at the first milk test after calving × parity number. Multivariate logistic regression, ANOVA, and survival analysis were used to test the correspondence between the resulting RI and individual fertility, milk yield, and survival from the population. To facilitate the analyses, the resulting RI values were categorized as low for cows in the lowest quartile, medium for cows within the interquartile range, or high for cows in the top quartile. We found consistent agreement between categories of the predicted RI and the measures of fertility and survival collected from individual cows. We conclude that the proposed RI represent a viable approach to refine the allocation of cows into potential low- and high-fertility populations.

Prenatal heat stress during late gestation exerts long-term effects on growth and productivity of the dairy calf. Further, direct exposure to heat stress during the preweaning period impairs calf thermoregulation and performance. We examined the effects of heat stress abatement during the prenatal period, postnatal period, or both on calf performance. We hypothesized that calves exposed to pre- and postnatal heat stress abatement would perform most optimally in terms of thermoregulation, growth, and health responses when compared with calves that are heat-stressed at any time in the pre- or postnatal periods. Holstein calves born to heat-stressed (HT) or cooled (CL) dams during late gestation (44 ± 5 d; prenatal HT or CL) were exposed to heat stress or cooling postnatally for 56 d (postnatal HT or CL), resulting in 4 treatments: HT-HT, HT-CL, CL-HT, and CL-CL; n = 12/treatment. Calves were administered 4 L of pooled colostrum and after 2 d of age allotted 10 L/d milk replacer and up to 3 kg/d concentrate in automatic feeder group pens (n = 6/pen). Postnatal cooling was achieved by 2 fans (average wind speed 2 m/s). Thermoregulatory responses (respiration rate and heart rate; rectal, body, and skin temperature), feed intake, growth parameters including average daily gain and medication events were recorded, and blood samples were collected weekly. Thermoregulatory responses were lower in postnatal CL calves compared with postnatal HT. In the afternoon, HT-HT calves had the highest respiration rate and rectal temperature, HT-CL calves had the lowest respiration rate, and CL-HT calves had the lowest heart rate compared with the other treatment groups. Prenatal CL calves weighed more at birth and weaning with a tendency for greater average daily gain compared with prenatal HT calves, whereas postnatal CL calves had increased milk replacer and concentrate intake and a tendency for reduced fever, infection, and total medication events relative to postnatal HT. Prenatal HT calves were esophageal tube fed more often than prenatal CL. Blood hematocrit and 24-h serum IgG concentration were greater in prenatal CL calves relative to prenatal HT. Prenatal heat stress abatement improves weight gain, hematocrit, and immunoglobulin transfer, whereas postnatal heat stress abatement modulates thermoregulatory responses, feed intake, and calf health. This study is the first to characterize the combined effects of pre- and postnatal heat stress or active cooling on the dairy calf.

The supply of methionine (Met) in late pregnancy can alter mRNA abundance of genes associated with metabolism and immune response in liver and polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) of the neonatal calf. Whether prenatal supply of Met elicits postnatal effects on systemic inflammation and innate immune response of the calf is not well known. We investigated whether enhancing the maternal supply of Met via feeding ethyl-cellulose rumen-protected Met (RPM) was associated with differences in calf innate immune response mRNA abundance in PMN and systemic indicators of inflammation during the first 50 d of life. Calves (n = 14 per maternal diet) born to cows fed RPM at 0.09% of diet dry matter per day (MET) for the last 28 ± 2 d before calving or fed a control diet with no added Met (CON) were used. Blood for biomarker analysis and isolation of PMN for innate immune function assays and mRNA abundance was harvested at birth (before colostrum feeding) and at 7, 21 and 50 d of age. Whole blood was challenged with enteropathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli 0118:H8) and phagocytosis and oxidative burst of neutrophils and monocytes were quantified via flow cytometry. Although concentration of haptoglobin and activity of myeloperoxidase among calves from both maternal groups increased markedly between 0 and 7 d of age followed by a decrease to baseline at d 21 the responses were lower in MET compared with CON calves. Nitric oxide concentration decreased markedly between 0 and 7 d regardless of maternal group but MET calves tended to have lower overall concentrations during the study. In vitro phagocytosis in stimulated neutrophils increased markedly over time in both CON and MET calves but responses were overall greater in MET calves. Oxidative burst in both neutrophils and monocytes increased over time regardless of maternal treatment. The mRNA abundance of lactate dehydrogenase (LDHA) signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and S100 calcium binding protein A8 (S100A8) in PMN was overall greater in MET calves. Overall data suggest that increasing the maternal supply of Met during late pregnancy could affect the neonatal calf inflammatory status and innate immune response. Although changes in mRNA abundance could play a role in coordinating the immune response the exact mechanisms merit further study.

AIMS To assess the effect of the administration of two oral Ca boluses on concentrations of total Ca, ß-hydoxybutyrate (BHB) and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in serum, and urine pH, in recently calved pasture-fed dairy cows. METHODS Friesian or Friesian cross Jersey cows from one dairy farm were blocked by age and randomly assigned to no treatment (control; n=14), or treatment (n=13) with two oral Ca boluses administered approximately 12 hours apart, with the first bolus being given within 14 hours of calving. Each bolus weighed 198 g and contained 43 g of Ca; 31 g of Ca from calcium chloride and 12 g of Ca from calcium sulfate. Cows were enrolled over three calendar days, and all cows were managed in one group during the 24-hour study period. Blood samples were collected at 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20 and 24 hours after the initial treatment. Serum from each time point was analysed for concentrations of total Ca, and from 0, 12, and 24 hours for NEFA and BHB. Urine was collected at 0, 12 and 24 hours for pH measurement and pH was categorised as <7 or ≥7. The effect of treatment on percentage change in concentrations of Ca in serum relative to 0 hours, and concentrations of NEFA, BHB and urine pH, was examined using multivariable repeated measures mixed models with cow as a random effect. RESULTS In the final multivariable model for percentage change in concentrations of Ca, there was an interaction between time and treatment (p=0.004), with the percentage increase being higher in treatment than control cows at 1, 2, 4, 8 and 13 hours. At 12 hours, 5/13 (41%) treated cows had a urine pH <7compared to 0/12 (0%) control cows (p<0.001), and at 24 hours 13/13 (100%) treated cows had urine pH <7 compared to 0/12 (0%) control cows (p<0.001). Over the 24-hour period, mean concentrations of NEFA or BHB in serum were similar in treated and control cows (p>0.3). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Oral treatment with two Ca boluses increased concentrations of total Ca in serum and decreased urine pH in pasture-fed cows. This bolus has the potential to reduce the prevalence and duration of subclinical hypocalcaemia in recently calved cows.

AIMS To estimate the herd-level prevalence of subclinical hypocalcaemia within 3 days of calving, to determine cow and herd-level risk factors for this condition, and associations with reproductive performance, in pasture-based cows in New Zealand. METHODS Between 10 and 15 clinically healthy cows ≥3-years-old (n=1,051) were enrolled from 76 spring-calving dairy herds. Blood samples were collected from all cows on 1 or 2 days within 3 days of calving, and assayed for total concentrations of Ca in serum. Subclinical hypocalcaemia was defined as concentrations of Ca in serum ≤2.14 mmol/L, and herd-level prevalence was the percentage of sampled cows with subclinical hypocalcaemia. Breeding and pregnancy diagnosis data were obtained for each cow to calculate reproductive outcomes. Herd-level data about management practices were collected from farmers at enrolment. Associations between cow-level variables, and reproductive outcomes, and subclinical hypocalcaemia were examined using multivariable logistic regression mixed models. Associations between herd-level variables and prevalence of subclinical hypocalcaemia were examined using a multivariable linear regression model. RESULTS Mean herd-level prevalence of subclinical hypocalcaemia was 52 (95% CI=49-55)%. Risk of subclinical hypocalcaemia at the cow-level was associated with an interaction between age of cow and interval from calving to sampling (p=0.03). Increasing age of cow was associated with increased risk of subclinical hypocalcaemia, and cows sampled on the day of calving had an increased risk compared with cows sampled 1 or 2 days after calving. Increased herd-level prevalence of subclinical hypocalcaemia was associated with feeding grass silage (p=0.06) or maize silage (p=0.004), and feeding increasing amounts of elemental Mg in the form of magnesium oxide (p=0.02). The mean farmer-reported herd-level prevalence of clinical hypocalcaemia was 2.9 (95% CI=2.1-3.8)%. Subclinical hypocalcaemia was not associated with any of the reproductive outcomes measured. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE There was a high prevalence of subclinical hypocalcaemia in the pasture-fed, spring-calving dairy herds sampled and a large between-herd variation in prevalence. Subclinical hypocalcaemia increased with increasing age, and declined with time postpartum. Herd-level prevalence was associated with feeding grass silage and maize silage to pre-calving cows and with increasing amounts of supplemented magnesium oxide. Subclinical hypocalcaemia was not associated with reproductive outcomes.

Exposure to heat stress during late gestation exerts negative carryover effects on the postnatal performance of the calf. In this study, we evaluated the health, growth, and activity patterns of calves born to cows exposed to heat stress (HT, provided only shade, n = 31) or cooling (CL, fans, soakers, and shade, n = 29) during late gestation (∼46 d, maternal dry period). Calves' body weight, rectal temperature, suckling reflex, and movement scores were recorded at birth, and calves were fed 6.6 L of maternal colostrum in 2 meals. Blood samples were collected at birth (before feeding), 24 h after birth, and at d 10 and 28 of age. Calves were housed in individual pens, fed pasteurized milk (6 L/d), and had ad libitum access to grain and water until weaning (49 d). Activity was assessed during the first week of life (wk 1), at weaning (wk 7), and in the first week postweaning (wk 8) using electronic data loggers. Health and body weight were monitored weekly. At birth, calves born to CL cows were heavier (41.9 vs. 39.1 ± 0.8 kg), their temperature was lower (38.9 vs. 39.3 ± 0.08°C), and they were more efficient at absorbing IgG than HT calves. Suckling reflex and movement score at birth were not different between groups, but calves born to CL cows spent more time (50 min/d) standing in the first week of life as a result of longer standing bouts. In wk 7 and 8, calves born to CL cows had less frequent standing bouts than HT heifers, but CL heifers maintained greater total daily standing time (36 min/d) due to longer (7 min/bout) standing bouts. All calves were healthy, but HT heifers tended to have higher (looser) fecal scores on d 10. Heifers born from CL cows gained 0.2 kg/d more from birth to weaning, weighed 4 kg more at weaning, and had greater concentrations of IGF-1 than HT calves, particularly on d 28. In utero heat stress during late gestation had immediate and prolonged effects on passive immunity, growth, and activity patterns in dairy calves.

The objectives of this study were 1) to compare the effects of a ME () or a NE () system for rationing ewes during late gestation on ewe and progeny performance and 2) to investigate incremental increases in NE allocation above 100% of recommendation during late gestation on ewe and progeny performance. Fifty-two twin-bearing ewes ( = 13 per treatment) were rationed to either 100% of recommended ME requirements (100% ME) or 100, 110, or 120% of recommended NE requirements (100% NE, 110% NE, and 120% NE) from d 112 of gestation to parturition. Mean energy intake, measured as ME and NE, from Day 112 of gestation to parturition was higher in all NE treatments compared with 100% ME ewes ( = 0.01). Ewes offered the 3 NE treatments had a higher live weight at parturition compared with 100% ME ewes ( = 0.02), with 100% NE and 120% NE ewes still being heavier than 100% ME ewes at 35 d postpartum ( = 0.02). Increasing NE allowance resulted in a linear decrease in the level of BCS loss prepartum ( = 0.01) and a linear increase in the level of BCS loss postpartum ( = 0.01). There was no difference observed between any of the treatments in total colostrum produced to 18 h postpartum ( = 0.29) or in total colostrum intake to 18 h postpartum ( = 0.27). Increasing maternal NE allowance led to a linear increase in lamb serum IgG concentration at 24 h postpartum ( = 0.03). The estimated milk production of 120% NE ewes tended to be higher than all other treatments at wk 6 of lactation ( = 0.08). Colostral SFA levels from 100% ME ewes was lower than that of all 3 NE treatments ( = 0.01), and unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) levels in colostrum of the 100% ME ewes were lower than those of the 100% NE ewes ( = 0.01). Cumulative levels of milk SFA, UFA, and MUFA did not differ between treatments ( = 0.19). Lamb growth rates during the first 5 wk postpartum were unaffected by treatment ( = 0.18) as were days to slaughter ( = 0.34). It can be concluded that both ME and NE systems used in this study are appropriate for formulating ewe diets during late gestation. Increasing NE allocation above 100% altered the pattern of body reserve mobilization during late gestation and early lactation without observed variations in lamb performance during this time.

Calves born to cows exposed to heat stress during late gestation (i.e., the dry period) have lower birth weight and weaning weight and compromised passive immune transfer compared with those born to dams that are cooled. However, it is unknown if heat stress in utero has carryover effects after weaning. The objective was to evaluate the effect of heat stress (HT) or cooling (CL) in late gestation dairy cows on the survival, growth, fertility, and milk production in the first lactation of their calves. Data of animals obtained from previous experiments conducted during 5 consecutive summers in Florida were pooled and analyzed. Cows were dried off 46d before expected calving and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments, HT or CL. Cooled cows were housed with sprinklers, fans, and shade, whereas only shade was provided to HT cows. Within 4h of birth, 3.8 L of colostrum was fed to calves from both groups of cows. All calves were managed in the same manner and weaned at 49d of age. Birth weight and survival of 146 calves (HT=74; CL=72) were analyzed. Additionally, body weight, growth rate, fertility, and milk production in the first lactation from 72 heifers (HT=34; CL=38) were analyzed. As expected, HT calves were lighter (means ± SEM; 39.1±0.7 vs. 44.8±0.7kg) at birth than CL calves. Cooled heifers were heavier up to 1yr of age, but had similar total weight gain (means ± SEM; 305.8±6.3 vs. 299.1±6.3kg, respectively) compared with HT heifers. No effect of treatment was observed on age at first insemination (AI) and age at first parturition. Compared with CL heifers, HT heifers had a greater number of services per pregnancy confirmed at d 30 after AI, but no treatment effect was observed on number of services per pregnancy confirmed at d 50 after AI. A greater percentage of CL heifers reached first lactation compared with HT heifers (85.4 vs. 65.9%). Moreover, HT heifers produced less milk up to 35wk of the first lactation compared with CL heifers (means ± SEM; 26.8±1.7 vs. 31.9±1.7kg/d), and no difference in body weight during lactation was observed (means ± SEM; HT: 568.4±14.3kg; CL: 566.5±14.3kg). These data suggest that heat stress during the last 6wk of gestation induces a phenotype that negatively affects survival and milk production up to and through the first lactation of offspring.

In the semiarid region of Brazil, in areas with vegetation composed mainly of Poincianella pyramidalis, several cases of congenital malformation and reproductive losses were observed in goats and sheep from 2012 to 2014. To determine the teratogenic effect of P. pyramidalis, two groups of eight goats each were used. Goats from Group 1 received fresh P. pyramidalis, harvested daily, as the only roughage during the whole breeding and pregnancy period. Goats in Group 2 (control) received Cynodon dactylon (tifton) hay free choice. Ultrasound examination for pregnancy diagnosis was performed every 28 days. Four goats from Group 1 were pregnant on day 28 but not on day 56, suggesting embryonic death or abortion. Another goat from Group 1 died at day 70 of pregnancy, and the fetuses exhibited micrognathia. The other three goats bore six kids, three of which showed bone malformations in the limbs, spine, ribs, sternum, and head, including arthrogryposis, scoliosis and micrognathia. One kid also showed hypoplasia of the left pulmonary lobes. In the control group, all goats bore a total of 13 kids and none of them exhibited malformations. These results demonstrated that P. pyramidalis causes congenital malformations and other reproductive losses in goats.

Periparturient dairy cows experience metabolic challenges that result in a negative energy balance (EB) and a range of postpartum health problems. To compensate for the negative EB, cows mobilize fatty acids from adipose tissues, which can lead to fatty liver disease, a periparturient metabolic disorder. Flavonoids, such as quercetin (Q), are polyphenolic substances found in all higher plants and have hepatoprotective potential and the ability to prevent or reduce lipid accumulation in the liver. In ruminants, few studies on the metabolic effects of Q are available, and thus this study was conducted to determine whether Q has beneficial effects on EB, lipid metabolism, and hepatoprotective effects in periparturient dairy cows. Quercetin was supplemented intraduodenally to circumvent Q degradation in the rumen. Cows (n=10) with duodenal fistulas were monitored for 7wk. Beginning 3wk before expected calving, 5 cows were treated with 100mg of quercetin dihydrate per kilogram of body weight daily in a 0.9% sodium chloride solution for a total period of 6wk, whereas the control cows received only the sodium chloride solution. The plasma flavonoid levels were higher in the Q-treated cows than in the control cows. A tendency for higher postpartum (pp) than antepartum (ap) plasma flavonoid levels was observed in the Q-treated cows than in the controls, which was potentially caused by a reduced capacity to metabolize Q. However, the metabolic status of the Q-treated cows did not differ from that of the control cows. The pp increases in plasma aspartate aminotransferase and glutamate dehydrogenase activities were less in the Q-treated cows than in the control cows. The Q had no effect on energy expenditures, but from ap to pp the cows had a slight decline in respiratory quotients. Irrespective of the treatment group, the oxidation of fat peaked after calving, suggesting that the increase occurred because of an increased supply of fatty acids from lipomobilization. In conclusion, supplementation with Q resulted in lower pp plasma aminotransferase and glutamate dehydrogenase, which indicated reduced liver damage. However, the direct effects of Q on the liver and the implications for animal performance remain to be investigated.

Iodine deficiency can impair the reproductive performance of livestock and affect perinatal mortality of offspring, yet diagnosis of deficiency is complicated and guidelines for I supplementation are imprecise. We challenged pasture-grazing pregnant ewes with a long-acting I supplement and a goitrogenic forage, then monitored their I status during gestation and lactation and in their lambs from birth to weaning. Approximately 46 d into gestation, 376 ewes were assigned to 6 groups comprising 3 supplementation levels × 2 diet regimens. On d 0 the groups received an intramuscular injection of iodized oil providing 0, 300, or 400 mg of I. They grazed until d 23, then half of each supplementation group were fed brassica kale until d 85, then all groups returned to pasture for lambing (parturition approximately d 99) and remained there until weaning (d 192). Serum total I concentration (STIC) was measured repeatedly in 8 'monitor' ewes per group and in their lambs and in milk sampled postpartum. Severity of goiter was determined as the thyroid-weight:birth-weight (TW:BW) ratio in 82 newborn dead lambs. Mean ± SE STIC for all ewes was initially 42 ± 2 (range 24 to 105) µg/L. Diet did not affect I concentrations in ewe serum or milk. Responses to iodized oil were proportional to dose level; STIC increased to approximately 150 and 240 µg/L for the 300- and 400-mg I groups and remained greater than 0-mg I groups for 161 d (P < 0.05). Milk contained 26, 271, and 425 µg I/L for the 0-, 300-, and 400-mg I groups, respectively. Mean STIC of lambs from supplemented ewes did not differ by diet; concentrations for the 300- and 400-mg I groups were 237 and 287 µg I/L at birth, and by weaning all groups were similar (62 ± 3 µg/L). Lamb STIC measured at birth correlated with exposure to I in utero (R(2) = 0.59), which was estimated from the area under the curve (AUC) of ewe STIC measured during the last 99 d of gestation. Thyroid enlargement in lambs affecting the TW:BW ratio was a sensitive indicator of maternal nutrition, being greater with kale feeding (1.27 vs. 0.51 g/kg) and lesser with I supplementation (0.35 vs. 1.44 g/kg). Results support the use of STIC as a biochemical criterion. It was sensitive to the effects of I supplementation with responses in ewes and lambs proportional to dose level and it reflected the relationship between ewe and lamb I metabolism. However STIC did not discriminate between groups of ewes fed pasture vs. goitrogenic forage during pregnancy.

Calves born to cows exposed to heat stress during the dry period and fed their dams' colostrum have compromised passive and cell-mediated immunity compared with calves born to cows cooled during heat stress. However, it is unknown if this compromised immune response is caused by calf or colostrum intrinsic factors. Two studies were designed to elucidate the effects of colostrum from those innate to the calf. The objective of the first study was to evaluate the effect of maternal heat stress during the dry period on calf-specific factors related to immune response and growth performance. Cows were dried off 46 d before expected calving and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: heat stress (HT; n=18) or cooling (CL; n=18). Cows of the CL group were housed with sprinklers, fans and shade, whereas cows of HT group had only shade. After calving, the cows were milked and their colostrum was frozen for the subsequent study. Colostrum from cows exposed to a thermoneutral environment during the dry period was pooled and stored frozen (-20 °C). Within 4h of birth, 3.8L of the pooled colostrum from thermoneutral cows was fed to calves born to both HT and CL cows. Day of birth was considered study d 0. All calves were exposed to the same management and weaned at d 49. Blood samples were collected before colostrum feeding, 24h after birth and twice weekly up to d 28. Total serum IgG concentrations were determined. Body weight was recorded at birth and at d 15, 30, 45, and 60. Relative to CL calves, HT calves were lighter at birth (38.3 vs. 43.1 kg), but no difference in weight gain was observed at d 60. Additionally, HT calves had lower apparent efficiency of IgG absorption (26.0 vs. 30.2%), but no differences were observed for total IgG concentration. The objective of the second study was to evaluate the isolated effect of the colostrum from HT cows on calf immune response and growth performance. The experimental design was identical to the first study, but all calves were born to cows under thermoneutral conditions during the dry period. At birth, calves were blocked by sex and birth weight and then randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments, which meant they received pooled colostrum from HT cows or CL cows. No treatment effect was observed on passive immune transfer or on postnatal growth. Thus, heat stress during the last 6 wk of gestation negatively affects the ability of the calf to acquire passive immunity, regardless of colostrum source.

The present study was conducted during 2005 and 2006 on 200 Nili-Ravi buffaloes kept in two agroecological zones (irrigated [zone 1] and rain-fed [zone-2]) of Punjab, Pakistan, with the objective to determine the level of trace minerals (Cu, Fe, Zn, Se) in serum of the buffaloes suffering from vaginal prolapse and to compare them with their healthy counterparts. In each zone 50 buffaloes suffering from prepartum vaginal prolapse during their seventh month of gestation were identified through survey. Vaginal prolapse-affected buffaloes belonging to zone 1 were identified as group VPB1 (N = 50), whereas buffaloes belonging to zone 2 were recognized as VPB2 (N = 50). The buffaloes of control group in zone 1 and zone 2 were identified as NCB1 and NCB2, respectively. The blood samples in all four groups of buffaloes were collected three times, i.e., first when these animals were in the eighth month of gestation, second during the eighth to ninth month of gestation, and finally when these animals were in the ninth or later month of gestation. The mean serum copper concentrations in buffaloes of group VPB1 were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in comparison with NCB1 and NCB2, whereas there were nonsignificant differences (P > 0.05) in copper concentrations between VPB1 and VPB2. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) of iron concentration in VPB1 compared with NCB1 and NCB2. Similarly, VPB2 also had significantly lower (P < 0.05) iron concentrations compared with NCB1 and NCB2. Serum zinc concentrations were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in animals of the VPB1 group when compared with NCB1 and NCB2. Similarly, lower zinc concentrations were observed in VPB2 in comparison with NCB1 and NCB2. There was significantly lower (P < 0.05) zinc concentration in affected buffaloes (VPB1 and VPB2) from the ninth month of gestation to term when compared with those in the eighth to ninth mo of gestation, and with those not yet in the eighth month of gestation. Serum selenium concentration were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in control group buffaloes (NCB1 and NCB2) in comparison with vaginal prolapse-affected buffaloes (VPB1 and VPB2). During different stages of gestation, mean serum selenium concentrations varied nonsignificantly (P > 0.05) within each group of buffalo. Based on information obtained from this study, it was concluded that the low serum concentration of copper and selenium are linked to increased incidence of vaginal prolapse in buffaloes during the last trimester of gestation.

Lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity was measured in 48 Egyptian water buffaloes four weeks pre-parturient. The activity was significantly low in 37 buffaloes (77.1%). Four weeks post-partum, clinical examination revealed that 23 buffaloes had the clinical signs of ketosis (K) while 14 had the clinical signs of parturient-haemoglobinuria (PHU). Serum samples were collected from 5 buffaloes of each group (K and PHU) besides 5 clinically healthy buffaloes with normal LCAT (control). Glucose level was significantly reduced in K and PHU groups while the phosphorous (P) level was significantly reduced in PHU group compared to control. There were significant reductions in the total cholesterol, free cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein and albumin in K and PHU groups; whereas, significant increases in AST, GGT, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) in K and PHU groups were detected. Therefore, LCAT could be a predictor for metabolic disorders in Egyptian water buffaloes.

Beef cow-calf herds are the most common livestock operation in Western Canada. Beef cows also have the greatest opportunity for direct contact with their environment through continuous sampling of the air, water, vegetation, and soil. These factors combine to make cow-calf herds a potentially useful sentinel of environmental change. Researchers individually tracked more than 33,000 cows in 205 beef cow-calf herds from spring 2001 to the end of the calving season in 2002 to examine the potential effects of emissions from the oil and gas industry on productivity. This article describes the study design and methodology of the Western Canada Study, with emphasis on herd-selection criteria and study implementation, the collection of herd-production data, and the challenges of tracking individual animals in a large prospective observational study-as the Western Canada Study is the largest on-farm study of its kind in North American cow-calf herds to date. The primary objective of this project was to examine the potential association between reproductive success and cumulative chronic exposure to sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic compounds in beef herds. Herd-selection criteria included potential exposure to oil and gas facilities, herd size, quality of available records, an established relationship with a local veterinary clinic, and participant interest. With the cooperation of local herd owners and veterinarians, on-farm collection of detailed individual animal data was successful in this group of cow-calf operations. Of the 212 herds initially selected to participate, complete calving season data for 2002 were available for 203 herds (96%). Individual animal records were available for more than 98% of eligible cows for each measurement period throughout the study. Herd-production records were rated as satisfactory or better in 94% of the herds. These process outcomes confirm the practicality of using cow-calf herds as sentinel populations for environmental exposures and support the validity of subsequent research on these animal populations.

During the late part of 2000 and early months of 2001, project veterinarians recruited 205 beef herds to participate in a study of the effects of emissions from the upstream oil and gas industry on cattle reproduction and health. Researchers developed herd-selection criteria to optimize the range of exposure to facilities, including oil and gas wells, battery sites, and gas-gathering and gas-processing facilities across the major cattle-producing areas of Western Canada. Herds were initially selected on the basis of a ranking system of exposure potential on the basis of herd-owner reports of the locations of their operations in relation to oil and gas industry facilities. At the end of the study, researchers summarized data obtained from provincial regulatory agencies on facility location and reported flaring and venting volumes for each herd and compared these data to the original rankings of herd-exposure potential. Through this selection process, the researchers were successful in obtaining statistically significant differences in exposure to various types of oil and gas facility types and reported emissions among herds recruited for the study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to get information on post mortem diagnoses of sows found dead or euthanised and to understand the diagnoses aetiology (causative background). Moreover, the study was to evaluate the association between the clinical symptoms observed on farm and post mortem findings. METHODS: A large Swedish herd was studied from January to September 2006. During the 32-week period 3.9% of the removed sows and gilts (old enough to be mated) were found dead, 12.0% were euthanised and the rest were sent to slaughter. Of 32 sows/gilts found dead 17 (53%) were post mortem examined, and of 98 sows euthanised 79 (81%) were examined. The 96 examined carcasses were after 70 sows and 26 gilts. The findings at examination were together with data from the herd monitoring program PigWin Sugg the base for the descriptive statistics presented. RESULTS: The average parity number at removal was 2.8 for those found dead and 2.1 for those euthanised. The highest number euthanised and found dead was in parity 0 (gilts). The main proportion of post mortem examinations was made on sows being in the period = 28 d of gestation at death (37.5%), followed by weaning to next service period (24.0%). Arthritis, with an incidence of 36.4% was the most common main finding of pathological-anatomical diagnosis (PAD). Of sows/gilts found dead were circulatory/cardiac failure (23.5%) and trauma related injuries (23.5%) most common PAD. The most commonly observed clinical symptom and reason for euthanasia of the sows/gilts was lameness. Notably, in 43% of the cases with PAD arthritis, the clinical symptoms suggested it being a fracture. Further one or more abscesses (38.5%) and teeth injuries (31.0%) were common findings when also incidental findings were included. CONCLUSION: This post mortem study based on carcasses from sows/gilts found dead or euthanised showed that arthritis was a significant problem in the studied herd and that post mortem examination was important to get proper diagnosis.

Perinatal mortality and stillbirths were investigated in an extensively managed herd of Friesian cows and heifers calving over a 2-year period: 504 cows were calved and 215 heifers. Cows were bred to Friesian and Jersey bulls using natural service. The perinatal fetal mortality rate was 7.5% for cows and 30% for heifers. An experienced stockman managed these calvings and veterinary assistance was required only on nine occasions. All stillborn fetuses were examined post-mortem by the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Carmarthen and no infectious agent was identified on any occasion. Thyroid hyperplasia was found in two fetuses. In blood samples taken from 10 late pregnant heifers, mean glutathione peroxidase values were 7.9 +/- 1.7 IU/ml Packed Cell Volume (PCV). Tissues from eight fetuses were submitted to the University of Liverpool for histopathological examination; all presented lesions consistent with myocardial degeneration and necrosis of the left ventricle. Following treatment of 205 late pregnant heifers with sodium selenite and vitamin E, the overall perinatal mortality rate in these cattle fell to below 11%.

Recent work has suggested that the recommended intakes of vitamin E for dairy cattle need to be increased, particularly in dry cows. However, these suggestions are based on data from cattle in the USA, which may have significantly different oxidative stresses than European cattle. This study, which involved 594 cattle on three dairy farms, was designed to determine the effect of increased vitamin E supplementation on the health and fertility of UK dairy cows. Cattle were randomly allocated to receive either two intramuscular injections of 2100 mg of vitamin E (and 7 g of sodium selenite) 2 weeks before calving and on the day of calving, or no additional vitamin E supplementation. Although supplementation had no effect on milk yield, reproductive efficiency, or incidence of uterine infections, supplemented cattle had a lower risk of culling and a lower rate of mastitis. These figures were economically significant but not statistically significant at the 10% level. Supplementation reduced the incidence of retained fetal membranes from 6.5% to 3%, an effect which was almost significant at the 5% level. If these data are representative they suggest that vitamin E recommendations for UK cattle should be reassessed.
