Ion chromatography (IC) is a novel high performance liquid chromatographic technique that is suitable for the separation and analysis of ionic substances in different matrix samples. Since 1975, it has been widely used in many fields, such as the environment, energy, food, and medicine. IC compensates for the separation limitations of traditional gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography and can realize the qualitative analysis and quantitative detection of strongly polar components. This chromatographic technique features not only simple operations but also rapid analysis. The sensors used in IC are characterized by high sensitivity and selectivity, and the technique can simultaneously separate and determine multiple components. Several advances in IC instrumentation and chromatographic theories have been developed in recent years. IC can analyze various types of samples, including ions, sugars, amino acids, and organic acids (bases). Chinese herbal medicines are typically characterized by highly complex chemical compositions and may contain carbohydrates, proteins, alkaloids, and other active components. They also contain toxic residues such as sulfur dioxide, which may be produced during the processing of medicinal materials. Therefore, the analysis and elucidation of the precise chemical constituents of Chinese herbal medicines present key problems that must be resolved in modern Chinese herbal medicine research. In this context, IC has become an important method for analyzing and identifying the complex components of Chinese herbal medicines because this method is suitable for detecting a single active ingredients among complex components. This paper introduces the different types and principles of IC as well as research progress in this technique. As the applications of IC-based methods in pharmaceutical science, cell biology, and microbiology increase, further development is necessary to expand the applications of this technique. The development of innovative techniques has enabled IC technologies to achieve higher analytical sensitivity, better selectivity, and wider application. The components of Chinese herbal medicines can be divided into endogenous and exogenous components according to their source: endogenous components include glycosides, amino acids, and organic acids, while exogenous components include toxic residues such as sulfur dioxide. Next, the applications of IC to the complex components of Chinese herbal medicines in recent decades are summarized. The most commonly used IC technologies and methods include ion exchange chromatography and conductivity detection. The advantages of IC for the analysis of alkaloids have been demonstrated. This method exhibits better characteristics than traditional analytical methods. However, the applications of IC for the speciation analysis of inorganic anions are limited. Moreover, few reports on the direct application of the technique for the determination of the main active substances in Chinese herbal medicines, including flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, and steroids, have been reported. Finally, this paper reviews new IC technologies and their application progress in Chinese herbal medicine, focusing on their prospects for the effective separation and analysis of complex components. In particular, we discuss the available sample (on-line) pretreatment technologies and explore possible technologies for the selective and efficient enrichment and separation of different components. Next, we assess innovative research on solid-phase materials that can improve the separation effect and analytical sensitivity of IC. We also describe the features of multidimensional chromatography, which combines the advantages of various chromatographic techniques. This review provides a theoretical reference for the further development of IC technology for the analysis of the complex chemical components of Chinese herbal medicines.

This study examines the feasibility of replacing SO2 in a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wine with a green tea extract. The treatments included the control with no preservatives (C), the addition of green tea extract at 0.1 and 0.2 g/L (T1 and T2), and an SO2 treatment at 50 mg/L (T3). Five monomeric phenolic compounds were detected in the green tea extract used for the experiment, and their concentrations ranged in the order (-)-epigallocatechin gallate > (-)-epigallocatechin > (-)-epicatechin > (-)-epicatechin gallate > gallic acid. At the studied addition rates, these green tea-derived phenolic compounds contributed to ∼70% of the antioxidant capacity (ABTS), ∼71% of the total phenolic index (TPI), and âˆ¼ 84% of tannin concentration (MCPT) of the extract dissolved in a model wine solution. Among wine treatments, T1 and T2 significantly increased the wine's colour absorbance at 420 nm, MCPT, gallic acid and total monomeric phenolic content. TPI and ABTS were significantly higher in wines with preservatives (i.e., T2 > T1 â‰… T3 > C, p < 0.05). These variations were observed both two weeks after the treatments and again after five months of wine aging. Additionally, an accelerated browning test and a quantitative sensory analysis of wine colour and mouthfeel attributes were performed after 5 months of wine aging. When exposed to excessive oxygen and high temperature (50 °C), T1 and T2 exhibited ∼29% and 24% higher browning capacity than the control, whereas T3 reduced the wine's browning capacity by ∼20%. Nonetheless, the results from sensory analysis did not show significant variations between the treatments. Thus, using green tea extract to replace SO2 at wine bottling appears to be a viable option, without inducing a negative impact on the perceptible colour and mouthfeel attributes of Sauvignon Blanc wine.

In this paper, we present a new donor-π bridge-acceptor type fluorescent probe, MIB, which bears two organelle-targeted groups, namely positively charged benzothiazole group for mitochondria and morpholine moiety for lysosomes. In aqueous solution, the nucleophilic addition of HSO3- (as SO2 donor) to MIB blocked its long-range π-conjugation and ICT process and resulted in significant optical signal changes (blue-shifted UV absorbance and fluorescence), which enabled colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent detection of HSO3- with high selectivity and sensitivity (detection limit of 63.15 nM). MIB offers obvious advantages of good water-solubility, fast response time (within 1 min), unique dual lysosome/mitochondria targeting capability and has been applied to the sensing of endogenous and exogenous SO2 in live cells through fluorescent imaging. In addition, the proposed probe has been utilized for the determination of bisulfite in real water, food and herbal medicine samples, showing good recovery (91.45 % - 109.3 %) and precision.

India relies heavily on coal-based thermal power plants to meet its energy demands. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) emitted from these plants and industries is a major air pollutant. Analysis of spatial and temporal changes in SO2 using accurate and continuous observations is required to formulate mitigation strategies to curb the increasing air pollution in India. Here, we present the temporal changes in SO2 concentrations over India in the past four decades (1980-2020). Our analysis shows that the Central and East India, and Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) are the hotspots of SO2, as these regions house a cluster of thermal power plants, petroleum refineries, steel manufacturing units, and cement Industries. Thermal power plants (51%), and manufacturing and construction industries (29%) are the main sources of anthropogenic SO2 in India. Its concentration over India is higher in winter (December-February) and lower in pre-monsoon (March-May) seasons. The temporal analyses reveal that SO2 concentrations in India increased between 1980 and 2010 due to high coal burning and lack of novel technology to contain the emissions during the period. However, SO2 shows a decreasing trend in recent decade (2010-2020) because of the environmental regulations and implementation of effective control technologies such as the flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) and scrubber. Since 2010, India's renewable energy production has also been increased substantially when India adopted a sustainable development policy. Therefore, the shift in energy production from conventional coal to renewable sources, solid environmental regulation, better inventory, and effective technology would help to curb SO2 pollution in India. Both economic growth and air pollution control can be performed hand-in-hand by adopting new technology to reduce SO2 and GHG emissions.

This study presents a comparison of SO2 concentrations simulated by a dispersion model, using as input both emission data inventories of the Mexican petroleum company Petroleos Mexicanos and emissions estimated by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument on board of the Aura satellite, contrasting results with data measured by an on-ground sensor located in the city of Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico, during the month of February 2013. The emissions used came from both oil extraction facilities located in the Gulf of Mexico and oil installations located on land. The days selected to be modeled were those when the winds had a northern component, and there was an observable emission detected by the Aura satellite coming from the emission sources. Evaluation analysis of the results showed that satellite data overestimate SO2 concentration, while the inventories of Petroleos Mexicanos underestimate it. Good correlations (r, r2, and concordance index) were observed between simulated and measured concentrations when the winds had a high frequency of directions of northern component and not-so weak speeds. It is recommended that Mexican oil company calculates more precise and updated emission inventories, considering not only a higher sulfur content of the gas emitted to the atmosphere and its combustion process but also from other existing sources of SO2 emission in this region.

Objective: To evaluate how asthma-related emergency department visits (AREDV), air pollutant levels, pollen counts, and weather variables changed from 2001 to 2008 in the Bronx, NY. Methods: 42,065 daily AREDV values (1 January 2001 to 31 December 2008) were collected using our institution's Clinical Looking Glass software. Daily values of sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), temperature, and humidity were obtained from the National Climatic Data Center's Bronx station. Daily tree pollen counts were obtained from the Armonk counting station near the Bronx. Median values for each variable were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test to compare 2001-2004 and 2005-2008 values. Simple linear regression examined associations between AREDV and individual pollutants. Due to seasonal variations of the variables, each season was considered separately. Results: There were significant decreases for AREDV, SO2, CO, and humidity for all seasons, and for NO2 in the spring and winter. Significant increases occurred for O3 in the spring, fall, and winter; for temperature in the summer and winter; and for tree pollen in the spring. Significant positive associations were found between AREDV and SO2, CO, NO2, and humidity, respectively, while significant negative associations were found between AREDV and O3 and temperature, respectively. Conclusions: From 2001 to 2008, significant: a) decreases in AREDV, SO2, CO, and humidity for all seasons, and decreases in NO2 for the spring and winter; and b) increases in O3, temperature, and spring tree pollen were observed. By tracking and anticipating environmental and pollutant changes, efforts can be made to minimize AREDV.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a hazardous residue in sulfur-fumigated herbs. Standards limiting SO2 content have been adopted worldwide for quality control of sulfur-fumigated herbs, and herbs with less SO2 are believed to be better. However, the standards are based only on the safe dose of SO2 and may not characterize changes in herbal quality, thereby the efficacy and toxicity, resulting from sulfur fumigation. To confirm this, here the correlation of residual SO2 content with the quality/efficacy/toxicity of sulfur-fumigated herb was investigated, and ginseng was selected as a pilot study object. Four sulfur-fumigated ginseng samples with different SO2 contents were systemically compared regarding their quality, anti-inflammatory, anti-shock and anti-stress efficacies, as well as acute and chronic toxicities. The results demonstrated that the SO2 content did not correlate with the quality, efficacy and toxicity changes of ginseng; more specifically, less SO2 residue did not indicate higher quality, better efficacy nor weaker toxicity. This fact suggests that SO2 content cannot characterize the variations in quality, efficacy and toxicity of sulfur-fumigated herbs. Therefore, the standard limiting SO2 content alone may be inadequate for quality control of sulfur-fumigated herbs, and new standards including other indicators that can exactly reflect herbal efficacy and safety are necessary.

To study the effect of different storage time on the chemical compositions and sulfur dioxide residues of sulfur-fumigated Gastrodiae Rhizoma (GR), and provide scientific basis for solving the quality and safety issues of sulfur-fumigated traditional Chinese medicinal materials. GR, sulfur-fumigated GR and its medicinal slices were stored under the same conditions, and then 8 active ingredients and sulfur dioxide residues were measured respectively. The results showed that the content of gastrodins in sulfur-fumigated GR and its medicinal slices was significantly lower than that in the non-fumigated GR. Moreover, the content of sulfur dioxide residue in sulfur-fumigated GR was significantly higher than that in its medicinal slices. That is to say, sulfur fumigation degree had significantly higher effect on GR quality as compared with its medicinal slices. During the whole storage time (8 months), the content of the eight chemical components in GR was not changed greatly in general. However, after the storage for 4 months, the content of 8 components and sulfur dioxide residues in all of GR samples were significantly changed. In particular, the content of sulfur dioxide residue in GR medicinal materials decreased up to 50% or more.

Prior research has indicated that pollen might be linked to suicide mortality although the few studies that have been undertaken to date have produced conflicting findings and been limited to Western settings. This study examined the association between the level of airborne pollen and suicide mortality in Tokyo, Japan in the period from 2001 to 2011. The daily number of suicide deaths was obtained from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, with pollen data being obtained from the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health. A time-stratified case-crossover study was performed to examine the association between different levels of pollen concentration and suicide mortality. During the study period there were 5185 male and 2332 female suicides in the pollen season (February to April). For men there was no association between airborne pollen and suicide mortality. For women, compared to when there was no airborne pollen, the same-day (lag 0) pollen level of 30 to <100 grains per cm2 was associated with an approximately 50% increase in the odds for suicide (e.g. 30 to <50 grains per cm2: odds ratio 1.574, 95% confidence interval 1.076-2.303, p=0.020). The estimates remained fairly stable after adjusting for air pollutants and after varying the cut-points that defined the pollen levels. Our results indicate that pollen is associated with female suicide mortality in Tokyo.

Levels, origins and potential risks due to different air pollutants (ozone, SO2 and particle-borne metals) in NW Spain were investigated in eight locations affected by different emission sources. All monitored locations suffered the influence of traffic and industrial emissions, being this influence more important in urban locations. Although average values of the estimated hazard index (HI) due to particle-borne metals showed values lower than one, maximum values of this parameter exceeded this safety limit in urban locations. In general, Ni and As were identified as those metals most contributing to the HI. Furthermore, the presence of industrial emission episodes produced a significant increase in the magnitude of the HI in two of the seven urban areas. Therefore, the frequency and intensity of these episodes should be further investigated. Finally, levels of airborne and particle-borne pollutants were integrated with the aim of providing a comprehensive assessment of health risk. According to an established indexing system, air quality can be classified from good to moderate, being the southern urban locations (the most densely populated and industrialised ones) presenting the worst values. However, either the high or the low influence of acute and chronic-effect pollutants on air quality depends on the location.

In this study, concentration of SO2 from a gas refinery located in complex terrain was calculated by the steady-state, AERMOD model, and nonsteady-state CALPUFF model. First, in four seasons, SO2 concentrations emitted from 16 refinery stacks, in nine receptors, were obtained by field measurements, and then the performance of both models was evaluated. Then, the simulated results for SO2 ambient concentrations made by each model were compared with the results of the observed concentrations, and model results were compared among themselves. The evaluation of the two models to simulate SO2 concentrations was based on the statistical analysis and Q-Q plots. Review of statistical parameters and Q-Q plots has shown that, according to the evaluation of estimations made, performance of both models to simulate the concentration of SO2 in the region can be considered acceptable. The results showed the AERMOD composite ratio between simulated values made by models and the observed values in various receptors for all four average times is 0.72, whereas CALPUFF's ratio is 0.89. However, in the complex conditions of topography, CALPUFF offers better agreement with the observed concentrations.

As an important treatment method, sulfur fumigation plays an essential role in the production and preservation of traditional Chinese herbal medicines. Although there is strict regulation on the use of sulfur dioxide, the abuse of sulfur dioxide still occurred from time to time. And the public faces a high risk of exposure. Because of the poor precision and tedious preparation procedures of traditional recommended titration, the accurate and convenient determination of sulfur dioxide in Chinese herbal medicines is still a critical analytical task for medicines safety and the public health. In this study, an accurate, high-throughput, and convenient method for the absolute determination of SO2 in Chinese herbal medicines based on triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) technique is developed. The study compared the quantitative ability for sulfur when the ICP-MS operated under traditional single quadrupole (QMS) mode and novel triple quadrupole (MS/MS) mode with three Reaction/Collision cell condition (no gas, helium, and oxygen). The result indicated that when the concentration of sulfate ranging from 0.5 to 100 mg · L⁻¹, isotopic ³4S can be selected as quantitative ion either the ICP-MS operated under the QMS mode or MS/MS mode. The use of helium in the Reaction/Collision cell decreased the single intensity of background ions. Better than QMS mode, the MS/MS mode can effectively reduced background interference. But there are no significant differences about the linear range and limit of detection. However, when the ICP-MS operated under MS/MS mode and oxygen was used as reaction gas in the Reaction/Collision cell, the ICP-MS/MS provided an interference-free performance, the linear range and limit of detection improved significantly. Either ³²S or ³4S exhibits an excellent linearity (r > 0.999) over the concentration range of 0.02-100 mg · L⁻¹, with a limit of detection of 5.48 and 9.76 µg · L⁻¹ for ³²S¹6O4²â» and ³4S¹6O4²â», respectively. The Chinese herbal medicines was treated using microwave digestion added 6 mL nitric acid and 2 mL hydrogen peroxide before analysis. The amount of nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide were optimized. The method was validated using Chinese herbal standard reference material GBW10020. The sample was treated and detected in six parallel, and the average concentrations obtained using the developed method (0.42% ± 0.01%) is in excellent agreement with the standard concentration (0.41%± 0.03%). The study demonstrates an accurate and convenient approach for the quantification of SO2 in Chinese herbal medicines.

A thermophilic biofilter was employed to treat the flue gas generated from sludge drying process, and the performance in both the start period and the stationary phase was studied under the gas flow rate of 2 700-3 100 m3 x h(-1) and retention time of 21.88-25.10 s. The results showed that the thermophilic biofilter could effectively treat gases containing sulfur dioxide, ammonia and volatile organic compounds (VOC). The removal efficiencies could reach 100%, 93.61% and 87.01%, respectively. Microbial analysis indicated that most of the population belonged to thermophilic bacteria. Paenibacillus sp., Chelatococcus sp., Bacillus sp., Clostridium thermosuccinogenes, Pseudoxanthomonas sp. and Geobacillus debilis which were abundant in the thermophilic biofilter, had the abilities of denitrification, desulfurization and degradation of volatile organic compounds.

The goal of this study was to analyze the influence of pollutants (concentrations of NO2, SO2, and soot in the air) and meteorological parameters (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, air pressure, cloud index) on Urticaceae pollen type emission measured in the region of Subotica, Serbia. The concentrations of the air pollutants, Urticaceae pollen, and meteorological parameters were measured over a 5-year period (2009-2013), followed by a statistical analysis of the values obtained. For most of the years examined, the concentration of NO2 correlates significantly with the concentration of Urticaceae pollen type. It was also established that air temperature, humidity, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, and cloud index have an influence on Urticaceae pollen type emission, while SO2 and soot do not contribute.

CONTEXT: Asian dust events are associated with increased asthma incidence, asthma exacerbation, decreased lung function and increased risk for hospitalization. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Asian dust events on asthma exacerbation by socioeconomic status using national health insurance claims data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-crossover design was used to analyze asthma-related national health insurance claims, air pollutant and climate data from 2007 to 2013 in Seoul and Incheon, Korea. We stratified our analysis by socioeconomic status (health insurance versus medical aid subscribers) and calculated the maximum air pollutant levels and average climate values per day. The number of asthma-related visits to medical institutions per day was compared between "event" and "control" days. RESULTS: Compared with "control days", the average number of asthma-related visits to medical institutions decreased on "event" days and increased 1-5 d thereafter. The number of visits by health insurance subscribers also decreased on "event" days and increased 1-5 d thereafter, while the number of visits by medical aid subscribers did not change on "event" days but increased 1-4 d thereafter. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Our study confirms that Asian dust events result in an increased number of asthma-related visits to medical institutions. This effect differed by socioeconomic status.

The residual content of sulfur dioxide is frequently regarded as the exclusive indicator in the safety evaluation of sulfur-fumigated edible herbs. To examine the feasibility of such assessment criteria, here the variations in residual sulfur dioxide content during sulfur-fumigation and the potential mechanisms involved were investigated, using Angelicae Sinensis Radix (ASR) as a model herb. The residual sulfur dioxide content and ten major bioactive components in sulfur-fumigated ASR samples were dynamically examined at 13 successive time points within 72 h sulfur-fumigation. The relationship between the content variation tendency of sulfur dioxide and the ten chemicals was discussed. The results suggested that sulfur dioxide-involved chemical transformation of the original components in ASR might cause large consumption of residual sulfur dioxide during sulfur-fumigation. It implies that without considering the induced chemical transformation of bioactive components, the residual sulfur dioxide content alone might be inadequate to comprehensively evaluate the safety of sulfur-fumigated herbs.

This study was undertaken to determine whether there was an association between fine particle matter (PM(2.5)) levels and daily outpatient department visits (OPD) for headaches in Taipei, Taiwan. Daily OPD visits for headaches and ambient air pollution data for Taipei were obtained for the period 2006-2011. The relative risk of visits for OPD headaches was estimated using a case-crossover approach, controlling for weather variables, day of the week, seasonality, and long-term time trends. For the single-pollutant model (without adjustment for other pollutants), increased OPD visits for headaches were significantly associated with levels of PM(2.5) both on warm days (>23°C) and cool days (<23°C), with an interquartile range rise associated with a 12% (95% CI = 10-14%) and 3% (95% CI = 1-5%) elevation in OPD visits for headaches, respectively. In the two-pollutant models, PM(2.5) remained significant after inclusion of sulfur dioxide (SO2) or ozone (O3) on both warm and cool days. This study provides evidence that higher levels of PM(2.5) increase the risk of OPD visits for headaches in Taipei, Taiwan.

An ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS) combined with reference herb method was developed to rapidly screen commercial sulfur-fumigated ginseng. Sufur-fumigated ginseng reference herb was prepared using genuine ginseng by conventional procedure. Then the reference sulfur-fumigated ginseng sample was analyzed by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS to identify characteristic marker components. 25-hydroxyl-Re sulfate with higher abundance was se- lected as marker compound from 8 characteristic components identified in sulfur-fumigated ginseng reference herb. The fragmentation of 25-hydroxyl-Re sulfate was extensively investigated, fragment ion m/z 879.44 with higher intensity was chosen as the characteristic ion of sulfur-fumigated ginseng. The response of ion m/z 879. 44 was improved by optimizing the MS conditions so that this ion could be used as the characteristic marker ion for screening purpose in ion extracting screening mode. The established approach was successfully applied to inspect 21 commercial ginseng samples collected from different cities in China It was found that the chemical profiles of 9 samples were similar to that of sulfur-fumigated ginseng reference herb, and the characteristic ion m/z 879. 44 of 25-hydroxyl-Re sulfate was also detected in these samples, suggesting that there were nearly 43% ginseng samples analyzed being sulfur-fumigated. This findng agreed well with the results of sulfur dioxide residues of these 21 commercial ginseng samples determined with the method documented in Chinese Pharmacopeia Compared with the method documented in Chinese Pharmacopeia, the proposed approach is more rapid and specific for screening sulfur-fumigated ginseng. SFDA of China should strengthen the enforcement to prohibit ginseng being sulfur-fumigated, so that ginseng and it preparations could be effectively and safely benefit to the health of human beings.

The contents of adenosine, gastrodin, 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, parishin and sulfur dioxide residue were compared in differently-processed Gastrodiae Rhizoma to provide the basis for a reasonable processing method of Gastrodiae Rhizoma. The analysis was performed on a Merck Purospher STAR column (4.6 mm x 250 mm, 5 µm) with a mobile phase consisting of methanol and water (containing 0.1% formic acid) under gradient elution at a flow rate of 1.0 mL x min(-1). The eluates were detected at 270 nm, and the column temperature was 35°C. The content of adenosin, gastrodin, 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, 4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde and parishin in processing of boiling or sulfur-fumigated were lower than that of in processing of steaming. Furthermore, the sulfur dioxide residue of sulphur-fumigated groups exceed 400 mg x kg(-1). This stable and reliable method will contribute to the quality control of different processed Gastrodiae Rhizoma.

To compare the differences of the active ingredient contents and the sulfur dioxide residue in Astragali Radix before and after sulfur fumigation and provide a basis for establishing an alternative processing method. Astragali Radix, harvested at the same time in Longxi Gansu, were processed with different methods. high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine the contents of the active ingredients in Astragali Radix and the revised method of the pharmacopoeia of China in 2011 was applied to determine the sulfur dioxide residue. The results show that the three-fold sulfur-fumigation group has the highest level of astragaloside IV and the dried sulfur-fumigation group with 10% water has the lowest level; the content of calycosin-7-O-ß-D-glucoside is the highest in naturally dried group and the lowest in the group of sulfur fumigating for 3 times; the sulfur dioxide residue of all sulfur-fumigation groups exceeds certain limit significantly and the group of sulfur fumigating for 3 times reaches the highest level.
