Dementia is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In this study, we analyzed the association of periodontal treatment with the risk of death in patients with dementia. The analyzed data were obtained by linking the National Health Insurance Corporation claims data between 2002 and 2018 to the Statistics Korea death registry. In total, 1,131,406 patients with dementia aged ≥ 65 years had undergone dental treatment during the study period. Time-dependent Cox proportional hazards model was performed. The mortality rate was approximately 10% among the patients with dementia. The 17-years cumulative survival rates for patients who received periodontal treatment and their untreated counterparts were 83.5% and 71.5%, respectively. The crude hazard ratio of the periodontal group was approximately twice as high as that of the non-periodontal group (1.99; P < 0.001). Furthermore, in the regression model that was adjusted for socio-demographic variables and systematic chronic diseases, the risk of death in the non-periodontal group was approximately 1.83 times higher than that of the periodontal group (P < 0.00). These findings suggest that preventive periodontal treatment may decrease mortality risk in older people with dementia.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the scientific evidence on the impact of photobiomodulation adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment on individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement was followed. A protocol was registered in the International Prospective Registry of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO #CRD42022310756). The research was carried out in seven databases, with no restrictions regarding the year of publication. Our work included studies that compared periodontal clinical parameters among individuals undergoing non-surgical periodontal therapy associated with photobiomodulation and a control group of individuals undergoing non-surgical periodontal treatment. Study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment (RoB 2.0) were performed by two review authors. Meta-analysis was performed. Mean difference (MD) and a 95% confidence interval (CI) were provided. Three hundred forty-one studies were identified, of which eight studies were included. The meta-analysis demonstrated that photobiomodulation adjunctive to periodontal therapy in individuals with diabetes resulted in a greater reduction in probing depth and greater attachment gain in comparison to periodontal treatment alone (p < 0.05). The included studies exhibited a low risk of bias. Photobiomodulation adjunct to periodontal therapy contributes to the improvement of periodontal clinical parameters in individuals with T2DM.

Introduction: The tea plant, Camellia sinensis, is one of the most popular non-alcoholic beverages in the world. The main components of Camellia sinensis include amino acids, fatty acids, phenolic compounds, flavins and purine alkaloids (xanthines). For this reason, in the field of medicine, Camellia sinensis has been used as an anticancer, anxiolytic, antidiabetic, antiobesity, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, chemopreventive, cytotoxic and apoptogenic, genoprotective, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, hemato-protective, and in wound healing, among other uses. Objective: To carry out a systematic review of the use of C. sinensis as supportive therapy in the treatment of oral disorders. Materials and Methods: This systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines. The search was carried out in the PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Academic databases. Articles from studies of Camellia sinensis were reviewed and those from a secondary source, such as literature review articles, were excluded Results: A total of 12 full-text articles were selected for review, in which the properties of Camellia sinensis are detailed. Conclusions: According to the bibliography reviewed, C. sinensis exhibits anticariogenic properties, applications in the treatment of dental erosion, applications in the treatment of gingivitis and bacterial plaque, and applications in the prevention of oral cancer; however, more controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety of use.


Introducción: La planta del té es una de las bebidas no alcohólicas más populares en todo el mundo. Entre los principales componentes de Camellia sinensis tenemos los aminoácidos, ácidos grasos, compuestos fenólicos, flavinas y alcaloides de purina (xantinas). Por ello en medicina, la Camellia sinensis se ha utilizado como anticancerígeno, ansiolítico, antidiabético, antiobesidad, antiinflamatorio, analgésico, antipirético, quimiopreventivo, citotóxico y apoptógeno, genoprotector, hepatoprotector, nefroprotector, hematoprotector, cicatrizantes de heridas, entre otros. Objetivo: Realizar una revisión sistemática del uso de C. sinensis como apoyo en el tratamiento de afecciones bucales. Materiales y Métodos: Esta revisión sistemática se llevó a cabo siguiendo los lineamientos PRISMA. La búsqueda se realizó en las bases de datos PubMed, Science Direct y Google Academic. Se revisaron los artículos de estudios de Camellia sinensis y se excluyeron aquellos de fuente secundaria, como los de revisión de la literatura. Resultados: Se seleccionaron un total de 12 artículos de texto completo para la revisión. En los que se detalla las propiedades de la Camellia sinensis. Conclusión: De acuerdo a la bibliografía revisada, la C. sinensis exhibió efecto anticariogénico, aplicación en el tratamiento de la erosión dental, aplicación en el tratamiento de gingivitis y placa bacteriana, y aplicación en la prevención del cáncer bucal, sin embargo, se necesitan realizar más ensayos clínicos controlados que confirmen su efectividad y seguridad de uso.

Introdução: A Doença Periodontal tem caráter multifatorial, já que depende de condições microbiológicas, imunogenéticas e sistêmicas do hospedeiro. Representa inflamação crônica das estruturas de suporte e proteção dental. Desencadeia uma complexa estimulação imunológica, bem como a produção de citocinas inflamatórias, que mediam a destruição óssea e de tecido conjuntivo, provocando perda dental e complicações à distância. A compreensão da etiopatogênese, permitiu os conceitos de modulação, que referem-se às modificações dos aspectos danosos da resposta inflamatória. Objetivo: O presente artigo tem como objetivo realizar uma revisão dos estudos sobre as principais terapêuticas adjuvantes na modulação da resposta imune frente à doença periodontal. Revisão de Literatura: Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura, onde foram selecionados artigos científicos em inglês, publicados entre os anos 2005 a 2020, por meio das bases de dados PubMed e ScienceDirect. No decorrer das buscas, foram utilizadas as palavraschaves "Inflamation", "Periodontal Disease", "Subantimicrobial Dose of Doxycycline", "Periodontal Disease", "Host Response Modulation". Resultados e Conclusão: A literatura é bem promissora em relação à terapia de controle complementar da doença periodontal. Dessa forma, novas pesquisas nessa área podem trazer inúmeros beneficos aos pacientes, sendo, assim, um novo caminho para o contorno da resistência bacteriana(AU)


Introduction: Periodontal disease has a multifactorial character, depending on the host's microbiological, immunogenetic and systemic conditions. It represents chronic inflammation of dental support and protection structures. It triggers a complex immune stimulation, as well as the production of inflammatory cytokines, which mediate bone and connective tissue destruction, causing tooth loss and complications at a distance. The understanding of etiopathogenesis allowed the concepts of modulation, which refers to the modifications of the harmful aspects of the inflammatory response. This article has the escape of conducting a review of studies on the main mechanisms of modulation against periodontal disease. Objective: This article aims to rev iew the studies on the main modulation mechanisms in the face of periodontal disease. Literature Review: A literature review was carried out in which scientific articles were selected in English, published between 2005 and 2020, through the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases. During the searches, the keywords "Inflammation", "Periodontal Disease", "Subantimicrobial Dose of Doxycycline", "Periodontal Disease", "Host Response Modulation". Results and Conclusion: The literature is very promising with complementary control therapy for periodontal disease. Thus, new research in this area can bring countless benefits to patients, thus being a new way to bypass bacterial resistance(AU)

OBJECTIVES: P4 Medicine is based on a proactive approach for clinical patient care incorporating the four "pillars" of prediction, prevention, personalization, and participation for patient management. The purpose of this review is to demonstrate how the concepts of P4 medicine can be incorporated into the management of periodontal diseases (particularly periodontitis) termed P4 periodontics. METHODS: This is a narrative review that used current literature to explore how P4 periodontics can be aligned with the 2018 Classification of Periodontal Diseases, current periodontal treatment paradigms, and periodontal regenerative technologies. RESULTS: The proposed model of P4 periodontics is highly aligned with the 2018 Classification of Periodontal Diseases and represents a logical extension of this classification into treatment paradigms. Each stage of periodontitis can be related to a holistic approach to clinical management. The role of "big data" in future P4 periodontics is discussed and the concepts of a treat-to-target focus for treatment outcomes are proposed as part of personalized periodontics. Personalized regenerative and rejuvenative periodontal therapies will refocus our thinking from risk management to regenerative solutions to manage the effects of disease and aging. CONCLUSIONS: P4 Periodontics allows us to focus not only on early prevention and intervention but also allow for personalized late-stage reversal of the disease trajectory and the use of personalized regenerative procedures to reconstruct damaged tissues and restore them to health. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: P4 Periodontics is a novel means of viewing a holistic, integrative, and proactive approach to periodontal treatment.

The link between oral health and adverse pregnancy outcomes has been suggested by numerous epidemiological studies. More recent studies indicate the relationship between severity of periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Two virulence mechanisms are proposed: direct invasion of oral microorganisms or their components into the fetal-placenta unit and inflammatory mediators produced in the oral cavity affecting the fetal-placenta unit. While interventional periodontal therapy still yielded contradictory results, animal studies suggest that maternal supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids protects the fetus by suppressing inflammation as well as bacteria proliferation in the placenta. This article reviews the recent epidemiological, mechanistic, interventional, and therapeutic studies of oral health and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Background and Objectives: Gum disease represents the condition due to the dental plaque and dental calculus deposition on the surfaces of the teeth, followed by ulterior destruction of the periodontal tissues through the host reaction to the pathogenic microorganisms. The aim of study was to present aspects regarding the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as an adjuvant therapy for the treatment of periodontal disease, started from the already certified benefits of HBOT in the general medicine specialties. Materials and Methods: The participant patients in this study (71) required and benefited from specific periodontal disease treatments. All patients included in the trial benefited from the conventional therapy of full-mouth scaling and root planing (SRP) within 24 h. HBOT was performed on the patients of the first group (31), in 20 sessions, of one hour. The patients of the control group (40) did not benefit from HBO therapy. Results: At the end of study, the included patients in HBOT group presented significantly better values of oral health index (OHI-S), sulcus bleeding index (SBI), dental mobility (DM), and periodontal pocket depth (PD) than the patients of the control group. Conclusions: HBOT had beneficial effects on the oral and general health of all patients, because in addition to the positive results in periodontal therapy, some individual symptoms of the patients diminished or disappeared upon completion of this adjuvant therapy.

Introducción: El uso de plasma rico en plaquetas para la regeneración de defectos óseos periodontales constituye una terapéutica eficaz. Objetivo: Identificar la evolución de pacientes con lesiones endoperiodontales tratados con plasma rico en plaquetas. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo y longitudinal de 11 adultos con enfermedad endoperiodontal y tratamiento endodóntico finalizado, atendidos en la consulta de Periodoncia y Medicina Regenerativa del Hospital General Docente Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso de Santiago de Cuba, desde febrero del 2018 hasta diciembre del 2019, quienes requerían intervención quirúrgica periodontal y cumplían los criterios para recibir plasma rico en plaquetas. A tal efecto, se analizaron variables sociodemográficas, clínicas, radiográficas y de respuesta terapéutica, las que fueron expresadas estadísticamente por medio de frecuencias absolutas y relativas y de la media aritmética. Resultados: En la serie resultaron más frecuentes, antes de la terapia, el sangrado al sondaje (81,8 %), las características alteradas de las encías (72,7 %), la movilidad dentaria (72,7 %) y las bolsas periodontales de 7 a 9 milímetros, con pérdida ósea en el tercio apical (63,6 %); todo lo cual se revirtió a menores porcentajes luego de 6 meses de tratamiento. Conclusiones: La evolución de los pacientes afectados por lesiones periodontales fue satisfactoria con el empleo del plasma rico en plaquetas, lo que se evidenció clínica y radiográficamente.


Introduction: The use of platelets rich-plasm for the regeneration of periodontal bony defects constitutes an effective therapy. Objective: To identify the clinical course of patients with endoperiodontal lesions treated with platelets rich-plasm. Methods: An observational, descriptive and longitudinal study of 11 adults with endoperiodontal disease and concluded endodontics treatment was carried out. They were assisted in the Periodontics and Regenerative Medicine Service of Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from February, 2018 to December, 2019; who required periodontal surgical intervention and fulfilled the approaches to receive platelets rich-plasm. To such an effect, sociodemographic, clinical, radiographic and of therapeutic response variables were analyzed, which were statistically expressed by means of absolute and relative frequencies and of mean arithmetic. Results: In the series, bleeding on probing (81.8 %), altered characteristics of the gums (72.7 %), dental mobility (72.7 %) and 7 to 9 millimeters periodontal bags, with bony loss in the third apical (63.6 %) were more frequent before therapy; all of which was reverted to lower percentages after 6 months of treatment. Conclusions: The clinical course of the patients affected by periodontal lesions was satisfactory with the use of platelets rich-plasm, which was clinical and radiographically evidenced.

Periodontal diseases are highly prevalent and can affect high percentage of the worlds' population. Oxidative stress and inflammation play an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Nowadays, more attention has been focused on the herbal remedies in the field of drug discovery. Green tea is an important source of polyphenol antioxidants. It has long been used as a beverage worldwide. The most interesting polyphenol components of green tea leaves that are related with health benefits are the catechins. Taken together, this review suggested that green tea, with its wide spectrum of activities, could be a healthy alternative for controlling the damaging reactions seen in periodontal diseases.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Melatonin is an indolamine that is primarily secreted by the pineal gland. It has immunomodulatory as well as antioxidant properties. It is a potent anti-oxidant that protects against inflammation and cellular damage caused by reactive oxygen species, also has potent angiogenic function that adds on to the benefits of melatonin. As a result of these actions, melatonin may be useful as an adjuvant in the treatment of various conditions in the oral cavity. The aim of this study is to systematically evaluate the role of melatonin in periodontal disease. METHODS: An extensive review of the scientific literature was carried out using PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar and the Cochrane base. Research articles were collected upto December 2017. RESULTS: Melatonin may have beneficial effects in certain inflammatory oral pathologies, mainly periodontal diseases where they inhibit bone resorption destroy reactive oxygen species, stimulates osteoblastic differentiation. Salivary melatonin could also act as a risk indicator for periodontal diseases. CONCLUSION: Many studies showed that the melatonin levels in GCF, Saliva, Serum of patients suffering from chronic periodontitis is lowered suggesting that may play a pivotal role in protecting the tissue from damage caused by oxidative stress. However, there exists no data on the concentration needed, method of application for potential benefits. Randomized clinical trials in this field are needed to fill the lacunae and better improve our understanding.

As a result of aging populations, in the future, dental practitioners will be caring for more older adults than ever before. These older adults, especially in developed countries, will demand a greater number of dental services, driven by increased tooth retention and an expectation of excellent oral healthcare throughout the life course. Further, the global rise in the prevalence and incidence of chronic diseases will increase the risk and/or severity of oral diseases and add a layer of complexity to the management of oral diseases in older adults. More older adults will be at a higher risk of periodontal disease and root caries as a result of reduced tooth loss and edentulism. This article reviews information on periodontitis and root caries, oral diseases which reflect the cumulative risk of the individual, and which are best addressed through prevention. Oral healthcare providers must embrace the concept of lifelong emphasis on prevention, as well as participation as active members of a healthcare team which provides healthcare for older adults in various settings (eg, hospital/clinic-based care, community-based settings, and long-term care facilities). National guidelines that address oral health are being considered by some countries, and if these are implemented they will increase the accessibility to oral health for older adults. In parallel to this, revisions of existing older adult insurance schemes (eg, the inclusion of routine oral healthcare in the US Medicare program) would promote the maintenance of a functional dentition that is pain-free and conducive to general health. The opportunity exists to implement a holistic approach to oral health that will align oral health with general health and emphasize that true health can only be achieved with the inclusion of oral health.

BACKGROUND: It is established that inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) by promoting insulin resistance and impaired beta cell function in the pancreas. Among the hypothesized independent risk factors implicated in the pathogenetic basis of disease, periodontal infection has been proposed to promote an amplification of the magnitude of the advanced glycation end product (AGE)-mediated upregulation of cytokine synthesis and secretion. These findings suggest an interrelationship between periodontal disease and type 2 diabetes, describing poor metabolic control in subjects with periodontitis as compared to nondiabetic subjects and more severe periodontitis in subjects with T2DM as compared to a healthy population, with a significant positive correlation between periodontal inflammatory parameters and glycated hemoglobin level. Results from clinical trials show that periodontal treatment is able to improve glycemic control in subjects with diabetes. Many therapeutic strategies have been developed to improve periodontal conditions in conjunction with conventional treatment, among which ozone (O3) is of specific concern. The principal aim of this trial was to compare the clinical effectiveness of an intensive periodontal intervention consisting of conventional periodontal treatment in conjunction with ozone gas therapy in reducing glycated hemoglobin level in type 2 diabetic patients and standard periodontal treatment. METHODS: This study was a 12-month unmasked randomized trial and included 100 patients aged 40-74 years older, with type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosed. All the patients received conventional periodontal treatment, or periodontal treatment in conjunction with ozone gas therapy in a randomly assigned order (1:1). The primary outcome was a clinical measure of glycated hemoglobin level at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months from randomization. Secondary outcomes were changes in periodontal inflammatory parameters. RESULTS: At 12 months, the periodontal treatment in conjunction with ozone gas therapy did not show significant differences than standard therapy in decreasing glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) level and the lack of significant differences in balance is evident. CONCLUSIONS: Although the change was not significant, periodontal treatment in conjunction with the gaseous ozone therapy tended to reduce the levels of glycated hemoglobin. The study shows a benefit with ozone therapy as compared to traditional periodontal treatment.

Objetivo: revisar a literatura quanto ao uso de soluções no reservatório líquido do ultrassom (US) para o tratamento das doenças periodontais, avaliando as contribuições dessa associação e as soluções mais eficazes para essa terapêutica. Métodos: foi realizada pesquisa bibliográfica nas bases de dados Public Medline (PubMed), Lilacs, Science Direct e ISI web of knowledge. As palavras-chave utilizadas foram: "periodontal disease", "ultrasonic", "cooling solution", "antimicrobial" e "irrigation". Como critérios de inclusão, foram selecionados estudos prospectivos, retrospectivos, caso controle, transversal e relatos de casos, publicados em inglês. Resultados: após pesquisa e minuciosa revisão por título e resumo de cada estudo, 15 estudos foram selecionados para avaliação dos desfechos investigados. As principais soluções associadas ao US foram povidono-iodo (PVPI), clorexidina, óleos essenciais, bicarbonato de sódio. O irrigante mais utilizado foi o PVPI, seguido por clorexidina e óleos essenciais. Os agentes podem conferir discretas melhoras no nível clínico de inserção e profundidade de sondagem, porém os resultados são controversos, já que nem todos os ensaios demonstraram efeitos positivos. Uma importante evidência observada foi em relação à redução dos níveis de microrganismos derivados do aerossol do US quando essas substâncias foram utilizadas no reservatório de água, sendo esse um aspecto positivo de seu uso como solução refrigerante ao US. Considerações finais: de modo geral, não puderam ser confirmados benefícios adicionais dos irrigantes antimicrobianos nos principais parâmetros periodontais avaliados, porém não se pode descartar o potencial uso desses agentes para a redução da dispersão de microrganismos advindos do aerossol, promovendo assim maior proteção ao paciente e ao profissional.(AU)


Objective: to review the literature regarding the use of solutions in the liquid ultrasonic (US) reservoir devices for the treatment of periodontal diseases, evaluating the benefits of this association, and the most effective solution for this therapy. Methods: bibliographic research was carried out in the Public Medline (PubMed), Lilacs, Science Direct, and ISI web of knowledge databases. The keywords used were: "periodontal disease", "ultrasonic", "cooling solution", "antimicrobial", and "irrigation". Inclusion criteria were prospective, retrospective, case-control, cross-sectional studies, and case reports published in English. Results: after a meticulous analysis of each paper by title and summary, 15 studies were selected for further investigation of clinical outcomes. The main solutions associated with US devices as coolant were PVPI, Chlorhexidine, Essential Oils and Sodium Bicarbonate. The most used coolant agent was PVPI, followed by chlorhexidine and essential oils. It has been shown that irrigating solutions can provide improvements in the clinical attachment level and probing depth, but the results are controversial since not all trials showed positive effects. Important evidence observed was the reduction of the levels of microorganisms derived from the US aerosol when these substances were used as a cooling solution. Conclusions: in general, additional benefits of coolant solutions could not be confirmed in the main periodontal parameters evaluated, however, the potential use of these agents to reduce the dispersion of microorganisms derived from the aerosol cannot be ruled out, thus promoting additional protection to the patient and professional.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Specific behaviors associated with pain in cats with oral disease have not been consistently studied. The aim of this exploratory study was to identify pain-induced behaviors in cats before and after treatment of oral disease using video assessment. Twenty-four cats (6 ± 3.3 years old; 4.9 ± 1.7 kg) were included in a prospective, blinded, randomized clinical trial. Cats were equally divided into minimal (G1: minimal dental treatment) or severe (G2: multiple dental extractions) oral disease groups. After acclimation at day 0, they underwent oral examination, radiographs, scaling, and dental extractions under general anesthesia (anesthetic protocol: acepromazine, hydromorphone, propofol, isoflurane, meloxicam, and local anesthetic blocks; day 1), and were discharged at day 6. Cats were filmed remotely for 10 min using a wide-angle glass lens camera before surgery (baseline) and throughout the study at different time points (36 h of video recording). The videos consisted of four parts namely general, playing, feeding and post-feeding behaviors. A board-certified behaviorist evaluated the duration/frequency of different behaviors based on an ethogram, which were analyzed using linear mixed models and a generalized linear model, respectively (p < 0.05). RESULTS: In comparison with baseline, duration of "not pawing the face" was significantly shorter at day 3 in G2. These cats spent significantly longer time "standing" and "laying" at days 3 and 6, respectively; G1 spent significantly less time "walking" and "standing" at days 3 and 4, respectively and significantly longer time "immobile" at day 3. Duration of "no/slow tail movement" was significantly longer in G2 than G1 at day 5. Duration of "pawing the ribbon" (playing) was significantly shorter in G2 than G1 at day 1. Feeding and post-feeding behaviors with soft food were not significantly different between groups or over time. Frequency of "difficulty grasping dry food" was significantly higher in G2 than G1 up to day 6. Frequency of post-feeding "head shaking" was significantly higher in both groups at day 6 when compared with baseline. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified pain-induced behaviors in cats undergoing treatment of oral disease. These behaviors may be used to differentiate painful versus pain-free cats in clinical practice.

RATIONALE: Halitosis is an unpleasant odor that emanates from the mouth. Studies show halitosis returns in a week, after treatment with PDT. Probably, bacteria living in the periodontal sulcus could recolonize the dorsum of the tongue. Until nowadays, there are no study in adult population that associates halitosis and periodontal treatment with follow-up evaluation. The aim of this randomized, controlled, single-blinded clinical trial is to treat oral halitosis in healthy adults with photodynamic therapy (PDT), associated with periodontal treatment and follow them up for 3 months. PATIENT CONCERNS:: the concerns assessments will be done over the study using anamnesis interviews and specific questionnaire. DIAGNOSES:: halitosis will be evaluated by OralChroma. INTERVENTIONS: The participants (n = 40) with halitosis will be randomized into 2 groups: G1-treatment with PDT (n = 20) or G2-cleaning of the tongue with a tongue scraper (n = 20). OUTCOMES: Halitosis will be evaluated by measuring volatile sulfur compounds using gas chromatography. After the treatments, a second evaluation will be performed, along with a microbiological analysis (RT-PCR) for the identification of the bacteria T. denticola. The assessment of halitosis and the microbiological analysis will be repeated. After that, patients will receive periodontal treatment. The participants will return after 1 week and 3 months for an additional evaluation. Quality of life will be measured by Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14). LESSONS: This protocol will determine the effectiveness of phototherapy regarding the reduction of halitosis in adults. clinicaltrials.gov NCT03996915. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This protocol received approval from the Human Research Ethics Committee of Universidade Nove de Julho (certificate number: 3.257.104). The data will be published in a peer-reviewed periodical.

La instrumentación mecánica durante el tratamiento periodontal trae consigo la formación de escombros microcristalinos que inhiben la adhesión tisular a la superfi cie radicular y favorece la proliferación bacteriana, lo cual perjudica los resultados del tratamiento periodontal a corto y largo plazo. Hoy en día el acondicionamiento radicular con el uso de biomodifi cadores es una opción de tratamiento adicional en el tratamiento de la periodontitis y el tratamiento de cobertura radicular. El objetivo del presente estudio es realizar una revisión de la literatura acerca de las aplicaciones y del acondicionamiento radicular con ácido cítrico, tetraciclina, EDTA y láser en el tratamiento periodontal no quirúrgico y quirúrgico (AU)

Recent reviews and meta-analyses of the literature over the past quarter-century have failed to provide enough evidence to prove or disprove the actual utility of photonic therapy in periodontitis, alone or adjunctive to conventional approaches. This apparent paradox has been explained by the many physical, molecular, biological, anatomical, and technical variables of photonic treatments, which can differ in light-emitting devices (laser or LED), wavelengths, irradiation power and modes, clinical objectives, follow-up times, disease grading, and assessment methods. This multi-faceted, controversial scenario has led practitioners to underestimate the actual potential of photonic therapy in periodontal diseases. In this critical appraisal of the literature, we have briefly summarized the main photonic therapies and instruments used in Periodontology, highlighting their main characteristics and limitations. Then, we have tried to identify and discuss the key methodological issues which can have an impact on the outcome of photonic therapies. Our main goal was to identify the best parameters, settings, and methodologies to perform effective periodontal photonic treatments and to extrapolate some recommendations for clinical use. Should these recommendations find a consensus among periodontologists and be adopted in future clinical studies, they will hopefully contribute to dissipate the present confusion and uncertainty on this complex matter.

This fuller impact of the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy within dentistry is taking greater notice with newer research findings. There are new advancements in research regarding postradiotherapy cases, osteonecrosis of the jaw, osteomyelitis, periodontal disease, and dental implants. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can even be used in conjunction with other procedures such as bone grafting. Although the research and clinical utility has come a long way, there are several complications to be mindful of during the application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Fundamento: existe una gama de productos naturales, dentro de los que están los fitoterapéuticos, donde se destaca la manzanilla para tratar la enfermedad periodontal inflamatoria debido a la acción antiinflamatoria, cicatrizante, antialérgica, analgésica, antiséptica y bacteriostática que esta planta posee. Se ha demostrado que la manzanilla actúa también sobre la placa dentobacteriana, principal factor de riesgo de la enfermedad periodontal y es utilizada para el tratamiento de procesos agudos y crónicos periodontales. Objetivo: establecer las bases científicas del empleo de la manzanilla en el tratamiento de las enfermedades periodontales.Métodos: la búsqueda de la información se realizó en un periodo de seis meses y se emplearon las siguientes palabras: manzanilla, matricaria recutita; a partir de la información obtenida se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de un total de 150 artículos publicados en las bases de datos PubMed, Hinari, SciELO y Medline mediante el gestor de búsqueda y administrador de referencias EndNote, de ellos se utilizaron 52 citas seleccionadas para realizar la revisión, 40 de ellas de los últimos cinco años. Resultados: la manzanilla es nativa en muchos países de Europa, y se cultivan en países como Alemania, Egipto, Francia, España, Italia, Marruecos, y en partes de Europa del Este. Las diversas plantas de manzanilla son muy distintas y requieren su propio conjunto de condiciones para crecer. Sus propiedades, acciones terapéuticas y principios activos varían de una especie a otra. Conclusiones:la Matricaria chamomilla y la Phania matricarioides son de probada eficacia terapéutica en el tratamiento de enfermedades periodontales agudas y crónicas(AU)


Background: there is a range of natural products, including phytotherapeutic, which highlights the chamomile to treat inflammatory periodontal disease due to the anti-inflammatory, healing, antiallergic, analgesic, antiseptic and bacteriostatic that this plant possesses. It has been shown that chamomile also acts on dentobacterial plaque, the main risk factor for periodontal disease and is used for the treatment of acute and chronic periodontal processes. Objective: to establish the scientific basis of the use of chamomile in the treatment of periodontal diseases. Methods: the search of the information was carried out in a period of six months and the following words were used: chamomile, matricaria recutita; Based on the information obtained, a bibliographic review was made of a total of 150 articles published in the PubMed, Hinari, SciELO and Medline databases by means of the search manager and the EndNote reference manager. Of these, 52 selected citations were used to perform the review, 40 of them from the last five years. Results: Chamomile is native to many countries in Europe, and is grown in countries such as Germany, Egypt, France, Spain, Italy, Morocco, and in parts of Eastern Europe. The various chamomile plants are very different and require their own set of conditions to grow. Its properties, therapeutic actions and active principles vary from one species to another. Conclusions: Matricaria chamomilla and Phania matricarioides are of proven therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of acute and chronic periodontal diseases(AU)
