RESUMEN

The aim of the study was to optimize the seat for a personal vehicle equipped with a crankset mechanism, meant for everyday use. The inclination of the seat backrest was selected on the basis of theoretical considerations. Then dynamic tests were carried out on a group of young, healthy men in order to verify the ergonomic aspects of the seat position in relation to the crankset and determine the efficiency of the human-mechanism system with a load of 50 W. The data obtained from the dynamic tests were subject to statistical analysis. Research has shown that higher seat positions result in statistically higher efficiencies. In addition, a holistic analysis of the personal vehicle design problem shows that the upper position of the seat is also the best. The results of the research can be used to optimize personal vehicles using human force as a drive.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to quantify the postures and to assess the musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) risk in physiotherapists repeating a manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) over a three-month period. The underlying hypothesis was that there would be Generic Postures (GP) that would be repeated and could be used to more simply describe repetitive and long-duration complex activities. METHODS: The posture of five physiotherapists performing five 20-min MLD at their workplace was captured by two cameras. From the recordings, the adopted postures were extracted every 5 s and quantified through 13 joint angles, that is, 6594 analyzed postures. Rapid Upper Limb (RULA) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) were used to assess MSDs risks. A hierarchical analysis was used to define GP. RESULTS: Seven GP were identified through mean values and standard deviation. GP ergonomic assessment showed a low to moderate MSD risk (RULA between 3 and 6 and REBA between 2 and 7). High neck (>20°) and trunk (>15°) flexion were observed for all GP. High shoulder abduction and flexion (>40°) were evidenced for GP3 to GP5. GP1 was the most used (34%) and presented the lowest ergonomic scores (RULA: 4.46 ± 0.84; REBA: 5.06 ± 1.75). GP3 to GP6 had frequency of between 10 and 20%. GP5, GP6, and GP7 obtained the highest ergonomic scores (RULA>5; REBA>7). All physiotherapists use different GP combinations to perform MLD. CONCLUSION: MLD could be described as a combination of GP. Ergonomic analysis showed that MLD exposes physiotherapists to low at moderate MSD risks.

Those who practice, and teach, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and those who are training in this realm, as well as in many other disciplines, often endure debilitating physical stress and strain as a result of their practices. [Bishop, 2023] Despite the attention paid to issues such as proper adjustments for loupe magnification, optimal footwear, attention to 'micro-breaks', and paying attention to the ergonomics of performing long and intense operations, many surgeons still suffer discomfort and debility, and, even, disability. [Dalagher, 2019, Epstein, 2018, Alleblas, 2017, Giagio, 2019, Norasi, 2021] Dealing with those challenges should include what those practitioners can do outside of the operating room to increase their comfort and resilience, as well as what can be done in the operating room. One approach to dealing with these issues is to utilize the lessons and benefits of yoga. [Tribble, 2016].

Workplaces are increasingly evaluating the use of wearables for ergonomic assessment and providing biofeedback as a real-time postural intervention to improve workers' posture. However, the effectiveness of such intervention systems has yet to be thoroughly investigated in different types of industrial tasks. This study tested the immediate effects of using vibrotactile feedback in simulated construction work tasks including lifting-lowering, shoveling, and tying rebar, to investigate the potential for such an intervention as a way to instruct workers in reducing excessive trunk flexion exposures. Fourteen male participants completed simulated work tasks with three different feedback locations, namely, no feedback, back, and wrist. The results demonstrate that the 95th, 90th, and 50th percentiles of trunk flexion angles are significantly lower for lifting-lowering and shoveling tasks when the feedback system is used. No significant postural changes were observed for the rebar tying task at any combination of percentile and feedback location. The rating of perceived exertion (RPE) for each task did not differ significantly between feedback conditions. Productivity remained the same with the feedback for lifting-lowering and rebar tying, while it was significantly reduced (4.5% of working rate reduction) in shoveling. Participants rated the wrist as the most preferred feedback location. The results of this study suggest that vibrotactile feedback has potential as an effective postural intervention for ergonomic risk factors in selected construction work tasks. Implications for the future design of real-time wearable, sensor-based vibrotactile feedback systems for postural control intervention during dynamic work tasks are discussed.

Importance: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are common among otolaryngologists and can be associated with decreased productivity, missed workdays, and reduced quality of life. Ergonomic risk for surgeons is elevated during common otolaryngology procedures; current ergonomic interventions lack the ability to provide real-time feedback. The ability to quantify and mitigate ergonomic risk during surgery may reduce work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Objective: To quantify the association of vibrotactile biofeedback with intraoperative ergonomic risk to surgeons during tonsillectomy. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional study was conducted between June 2021 and October 2021 at a freestanding tertiary care children's hospital and included 11 attending pediatric otolaryngologists. Data analysis was conducted from August to October 2021. Interventions: Real-time quantification of ergonomic risk during tonsillectomy and the use of a vibrotactile biofeedback posture monitor. Main Outcomes and Measures: Association of vibrotactile biofeedback with objective measures of ergonomic risk. Assessment tools included the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment, craniovertebral angle, and time spent in an at-risk posture. Results: Eleven surgeons (mean [SD] age 42 [7] years; 2 women [18%]) performed 126 procedures with continuous posture monitoring in the presence (80 [63%]) and absence (46 [37%]) of vibrotactile biofeedback. No complications or delays associated with the device were reported. Intraoperative vibrotactile biofeedback was associated with improved Rapid Upper Limit Assessment neck, trunk, and leg scores by 0.15 (95% CI, 0.05-0.25), improved craniovertebral angle by 1.9 (95% CI, 0.32-3.40), and decreased overall time spent in an at-risk posture by 30% (95% CI, 22%-39%). Conclusions and Relevance: The results of this cross-sectional study suggest that use of a vibrotactile biofeedback device to quantify and mitigate ergonomic risk for surgeons is feasible and safe while performing surgery. Vibrotactile biofeedback was associated with reduced ergonomic risk during tonsillectomy and may have a role in improving surgical ergonomics and preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders are prevalent among physiotherapists. They perform many repetitive tasks in awkward postures that require a high muscle load. This issue was often addressed through subjective analysis (questionnaire) but rarely using postural evaluation combined with an ergonomic assessment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article was to decompose draining lymphatic massage performed by physiotherapists in generic postures (GP) to quickly assess the musculoskeletal disorder risk. METHODS: Based on numeric video recorded in frontal and sagittal planes, 3360 postures were defined from 20-minutes lymphatic drainage massage performed by 7 physiotherapists over a period of 6 months. A hierarchical cluster analysis was applied to define the GP. RESULTS: Seven GP were identified, which were described by their average joint angles, variability and relative frequency. GP6, GP4 and GP2 had the highest frequencies (17.6%, 16.9% and 16.8% respectively). Trunk and neck were essentially flexed (neck: 17.0±10.0° for GP1; trunk: 20.4±8.7° for GP4). Shoulder flexion and abduction ranged from 15° (GP7) to 60° (GP4). Mean and variability of RULA score completed the analysis. The highest scores were computed for GP2 and GP3 (respectively 5.5±1.3 and 5.8±1.2, p < 0.05). GP4 had the lowest (4.0±1.1, p < 0.05). The results suggest that massages have to be monitored. Attention should be paid to the postures used to prevent the occurrence of MSDs. CONCLUSION: The massages could be described as a combination of generic posture for a rapid ergonomic assessment.

Este discute a representatividade da disciplina Psicologia do Esporte nos cursos de Psicologia e Educação Física em instituições de ensino superior reconhecidas pelo MEC e situadas na região Sul do país. Foi realizado um estudo documental, com base nos currículos das Instituições. Os resultados revelaram que no Sul do Brasil 21,02% dos cursos de Psicologia, 41,96% dos cursos de bacharelado em Educação Física e apenas 14,83% dos cursos de licenciatura em Educação Física apresentam a disciplina Psicologia do Esporte em sua grade curricular. Observou-se que a disciplina é ofertada mais frequentemente em regime obrigatório nos cursos de bacharelado em Educação Física. Nos cursos de Psicologia, quando ofertada, costuma ser optativa. Os resultados evidenciam uma maior oferta da disciplina para os estudantes de Educação Física, em relação aos de Psicologia, o que pode estar relacionado ao próprio contexto de surgimento da disciplina e sua popularização no meio acadêmico. Para que esse panorama possa mudar e se possa oferecer uma formação adequada no curso de Psicologia para fomentar essa opção de carreira, há necessidade de se repensar o currículo e o próprio perfil do egresso, de forma a dar mais oportunidade aos estudantes para que conheçam as bases teóricas e os campos de aplicação da Psicologia do Esporte. Tal lacuna pode acarretar a fragilização da disseminação desse conhecimento aos estudantes de graduação e a consequente ocupação do mercado de trabalho.(AU)


This study discusses the representativeness of Sports Psychology in Psychology and Physical Education courses at higher education institutions from Southern Brazil. A documentary study was conducted based on the institutions' curricula. Results show that 21.02% of the Psychology major, 41.96% of the bachelor's in Physical Education, and only 14.83% of the license in Physical Education offer Sports Psychology in their curricula. Sports Psychology is most often offered as a compulsory subject in the bachelor's program in Physical Education, whereas Psychology courses offer it mainly as an elective. Physical Education students have greater contact with the discipline when compared with Psychology students, which may be explained by its context of development and popularization in the academic environment. To change this scenario and offer adequate education in the Psychology programs to foster this career option, institutions must rethink their curriculum and the graduate profile itself. This would give students better opportunity to get to know its theoretical bases and fields of application. Such a gap can hinder the dissemination of this knowledge to undergraduate students and the consequent labor market occupation.(AU)


El objetivo de este estudio es discutir la representatividad de la materia Psicología del Deporte en los cursos de Psicología y Educación Física en instituciones de educación superior de la región Sur de Brasil, reconocidas por el Ministerio de Educación (MEC). Se realizó un estudio documental, basado en los planes de estudio de las instituciones. Los resultados revelaron que, en el Sur de Brasil, el 21,02% de los cursos de Psicología, el 41,96% de los cursos de licenciatura en Educación Física y sólo el 14,83% de los cursos de profesorado en Educación tienen la materia Psicología del Deporte en sus planes de estudio. Se observó que la materia Psicología del Deporte se ofrece con mayor frecuencia como asignatura obligatoria en los cursos de licenciatura en Educación Física. Cuando se ofrece en los cursos de Psicología, es una materia optativa. Los resultados muestran una mayor oferta para los estudiantes de Educación Física en comparación con Psicología, lo que puede estar relacionado con el contexto del surgimiento de la Psicología del Deporte como materia y su popularización en el ámbito académico. Para que este escenario cambie y sea posible ofrecer una formación adecuada en el curso de Psicología con el fin de fomentar esta opción de carrera, es necesario repensar el plan de estudios y el perfil del egresado, así los estudiantes tendrán más oportunidades de conocer sus bases teóricas y sus campos de actuación. Tal brecha puede debilitar la difusión de este conocimiento a los estudiantes de grado y la consecuente ocupación en el mercado laboral.(AU)

STUDY DESIGN: Invited literature review BACKGROUND: Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in adults, and research shows that people living with arthritis experience work instability, loss of independence, financial difficulties, and overall decreased quality of life. Current nonpharmacological treatments can be beneficial for short term relief; however, the evidence on these long-term treatments is limited. Ergonomic modifications have been used in the workplace to address musculoskeletal conditions to ensure proper fit of one's environment, and research shows that these modifications can decrease pain and injury and increase work productivity. A broader perspective on ergonomic approaches may be important to supporting individuals with arthritis within hand therapy. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This review proposes an expanded perspective on ergonomic approaches within hand therapy and explores published literature to identify potential benefits of applying ergonomic approaches for individuals with upper extremity arthritis. METHODS: A systematic search and screening process was conducted to identify articles that implemented an ergonomic approach for the support of individuals with upper extremity osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. RESULTS: A total of 34 articles described interventions that employed ergonomics including task-based or general ergonomics (n = 17), contextualized supports (n = 8), or holistic, lifestyle approaches (n = 9). Only one study focused solely on individuals with osteoarthritis, whereas interventions for individuals with rheumatoid arthritis showed positive outcomes across these categories. Situational learning, building of patient self-efficacy, and development of new habits and routines are vital for carryover and implementation to support performance in daily life. CONCLUSION: There is an opportunity for hand therapists to extend the scope of interventions provided as part of an ergonomic approach to supporting patients. Specifically, therapists can consider use of emerging technologies and telehealth that promote contextualization and follow-up for long-term outcomes.

Children spend over 70% of their school day sitting, most of the time in the classroom. Even when meeting physical activity guidelines but sitting for long uninterrupted periods, children are at risk of poorer health outcomes. With an approach to create an active learning environment through the implementation of sit-stand tables, this exploratory mixed-methods study aims to evaluate a holistic concept for reducing sedentary time in schools by implementing sit-stand tables as well as to examine the feasibility and didactic usability in classroom settings. Children from eight German schools aged 7 to 10 in primary schools and 11 to 13 in secondary schools (n = 211), allocated into control and intervention groups, were included in the study, as well as teachers (n = 13). An accelerometer was used as a quantitative measure to assess sitting and standing times and sport motoric tests were taken. Qualitative interviews were performed with teachers regarding feasibility and acceptance of the sit-stand tables. Independent t-test analysis adjusted for age, sex and school type found that sitting times of children in the intervention group could be reduced (by 30.54 min per school day of 6 h, p < 0.001) within all school and age levels. Overall, implementing sit-stand tables in classrooms serves as a feasible and effective opportunity to reduce sedentary behaviour and create an active learning environment.

OBJECTIVES: Despite a rise in automation, workers in the petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing industry are potentially exposed to various chemicals through inhalation while performing routine job duties. Many factors contribute to the degree of exposure experienced in this setting. The study objective was to characterize the impact of workplace conditions, anthropometric variability, and task orientation on exposure for a simulated routine operations task. METHODS: A chemical exposure laboratory simulation study was designed to evaluate the dependent variable of chemical exposure level in the breathing zone for methane and sulfur hexafluoride. The independent variables were (i) posture of the worker, (ii) worker anthropometry, (iii) process configuration, and (iv) gas density. RESULTS: Pipe height was a significant predictor of gas concentration measured in the breathing zone when located in a position that encouraged the gas to enter the breathing zone of the worker. Worker anthropometry had a major impact; tall worker's (male) chemical concentrations exceeded those of the short worker (female) for methane simulations but the opposite resulted for sulfur hexafluoride. Also, worker posture had a significant impact on gas exposure where nonneutral postures were found to have higher levels of chemical concentration. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings indicate that the breathing zone location is altered by posture and worker height, which changes the exposures relative to the emission source depending on the gas density of the chemicals that are present. As a result, qualitative risk assessment cannot be performed accurately without accounting for these factors. Practically, controls may need to account for worker size differences and posture adaptations.

OBJECTIVE: Massage therapy involves pervasive ergonomic hazards with the majority of massage therapists (MTs) experiencing adverse musculoskeletal health issues. A variety of barriers and facilitators exist that can impact the efficacy of safety programs. METHODS: A longitudinal study to characterize individual and organizational barriers and facilitators that influence the implementation of self-care techniques designed to reduce musculoskeletal health issues. RESULTS: MTs who reported time as abarrier implemented 0.9 fewer selfcare items despite wanting to make these changes (P  = 0.003) and 1.4 fewer self-care items when management was identified as a barrier (P < 0.001). Almost 20% of the MTs reported switching jobs which was associated with implementing 1.1 fewer self-care items (P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that organizational factors plays a critical role in workplace safety which can be used to improve working conditions faced by MTs.

Traffic police riders are exposed to prolonged static postures causing significant angular deviation of the musculoskeletal, including the lumbar angle (L1-L5). This postural alteration contributes to awkward posture, musculoskeletal disorders and spinal injury, especially in the lower back area, as it is one of the most severe modern diseases nowadays. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of lumbar support with a built-in massager system on spinal angle profiles among traffic police riders. A randomised controlled trial (pre-testpost-test control design) was used to assess spinal angle pattern while riding the high-powered motorcycle for 20 minutes. Twenty-four traffic police riders were randomly selected to participate and 12 riders were assigned to the control group and 12 riders to the experimental group. The pre-test and post-test were conducted at a one-week interval. Each participant was required to wear a TruPosture Smart Shirt (to monitor spinal posture). The TruPosture Apps recorded the spinal angle pattern. The data indicated that the police riders using motorcycle seat with lumbar support and built-in massager system showed a huge improvement in maintaining posture which only involves slight spinal angle deviation changes from the spinal reference angle throughout the 20 minutes ride. The data collected then were analysed using the Mann-Whitney test and Wilcoxon signed-ranked test to verify a statistically significant difference between and within the control and experimental groups. There were significant differences in all sensors between the control group and experimental groups (p<0.05) and within the experimental group. According to the findings, it can be said that the ergonomic intervention prototype (lumbar support with built-in massager system) successfully helps to maintain and improve the natural curve of the spinal posture. Knowledge of how to design digital systems that are ergonomically sound, high in usability, and optimized for the user, context, and task has existed for some time. Despite this, there are still too many examples of new digital health care systems that are poorly designed and that could negatively affect both the work environment of health care staff and patient safety. This could be because of a gap between the theoretical knowledge of design and ergonomics and the practical implementation of this knowledge in procuring and developing digital health care systems. Furthermore, discussions of digitalization are often at a general level and risk neglecting the nature of direct interaction with the digital system. This is problematic since it is at this detailed level that work environment and patient safety issues materialize in practice. In this paper, we illustrate such issues with two scenarios concerned with contemporary electronic health care records, based on field studies in two health care settings. We argue that current methods and tools for designing and evaluating digital systems in health care must cater both to the holistic level and to the details of interaction and ergonomics. It must also be acknowledged that health care professionals are neither designers nor engineers, so expectations of them during the development of digital systems must be realistic. We suggest three paths toward a more sustainable digital work environment in health care: (1) better tools for evaluating the digital work environment in the field; (2) generic formulations of qualitative requirements related to usability and for adaptation to the user, context, and task, to be used in procurement; and (3) the introduction of digital ergonomics as an embracing concept capturing several of the ergonomic challenges (including physical, cognitive, and organizational aspects) involved in implementing and using digital systems.

OBJECTIVES: To apply a human factors approach, the study of interactions between humans and complex systems, to investigate patient preparedness, satisfaction, and perceived usability with sacral neuromodulation (SNM) and develop interventions aimed at improving patient experience. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients with overactive bladder undergoing staged SNM were observed, and data including pre-operative preparedness, satisfaction, perceived usability and barriers impacting patient experience were collected. Interventions were developed and an additional ten patients were observed. All patients were English-speaking and at least 18 years of age. RESULTS: Pre-intervention patients had difficulty understanding the risks of the procedure, did not know what to expect post-operatively and were unsatisfied with pre-operative materials. Interventions included: A pre-procedure educational video and informational sheet, detailed discharge instructions; and a nursing inservice. Pre-operative preparedness (Stage I: U = 100, z = 3.785, P = .000; Stage II: U = 80, z = 2.864, P = .003), post-operative satisfaction (Stage I: U = 100, z = 3.788, P = .000; Stage II: U = 77.5, z = 2.665, P = .006.) and perceptions of usability (Stage I: U = 77.00, z = 2.056, P = .043.; Stage II: U = 80.50, z = 2.308, P = .019) increased significantly after the intervention. CONCLUSION: Our observations highlight the value of implementing a human factors approach to identify and mitigate barriers impacting patient experiences with SNM. Through the implementation of systems-level interventions (ie, interventions that impact the non-clinical aspects of surgery such as patient and/or staff education), significant improvements can be made.

Dental professionals often perform physically and mentally demanding therapeutical procedures. They work maintaining muscular imbalance and asymmetrical positions for a long time. The aim of the study was to describe the prevalence and the factors associated to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) among Italian dental professionals and the most affected body regions. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between March 2019 and February 2020. The Nordic Musculoskeletal questionnaire (NMQ) was implemented with questions related to working habits (dental occupation, working hours per week and per days, years of work) and lifestyle (practiced physical activity, including frequency and duration, mobilization activities, and knowledge of ergonomic guidelines) was used. The-chi square test was carried out to detect any statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). Logistic regression was carried out to detect the most significant factors associated to WMSD occurrence. A total of 284 questionnaires have been used for the analysis. A high proportion of dental professionals (84.6%) were affected by WMSD in the last 12 months. A higher prevalence was found in females (87%) when compared to males (80%). The prevalence of WMSD was correlated to the working hours/day and hour/week, with a higher risk for operators working >5 h/day and >30 h/week. In addition, a high prevalence was found in operators working for 2-5 years after graduation. Most of the surveyed dental professionals practiced physical activity (70.1%) but only a few had satisfactorily knowledge of ergonomic guidelines (12.7%). Interestingly, participants who practiced yoga or stretching as physical activities demonstrated lower WMSD (77%) when compared to other physical activities (84%). We can highlight that generic physical activities have no functional effect on WMSD for dental professionals. The most affected body areas were neck (59.9%), shoulders (43.3%), lumbar region (52.1%), dorsal region (37.7%) and wrists (30.6%). Considering the magnitude of the problem, there is an urgent need to implement the education in ergonomics among dental professionals, that may be achieved by teaching biomechanics, posturology and integrative functional therapies (such as yoga) during the university education and by promoting holistic health of dental operators.

Informal traditional medicine markets are trading and processing hubs for a range of plant, animal and mineral materials; however, little is known regarding the occupational risks associated with the processing and handling of these products. The aim of this study was to identify the workplace hazards of the traditional medicine trade. A walk-through observation of the workplace was conducted by two independent observers with formal training in workplace risk evaluation. Ergonomic, physical, chemical, biological and environmental hazards were identified from the handling of plant, animal and/or mineral products. The study gives an insight into a unique and diverse sector.

Electronic sports (esports), or competitive video gaming, is a rapidly growing industry and phenomenon. While around 90% of American children play video games recreationally, the average professional esports athlete spends 5.5 to 10 h gaming daily. These times and efforts parallel those of traditional sports activities where individuals can participate at the casual to the professional level with the respective time commitments. Given the rapid growth in esports, greater emphasis has been placed on identification, management, and prevention of common health hazards that are associated with esports participation while also focusing on the importance of health promotion for this group of athletes. This review outlines a three-point framework for sports medicine providers, trainers, and coaches to provide a holistic approach for the care of the esports athlete. This esports framework includes awareness and management of common musculoskeletal and health hazards, opportunities for health promotion, and recommendations for performance optimization.

RESUMEN

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONS Based on a 45-year career as a practitioner in industrial ergonomics, I offer in this paper a personal memoir on how ergonomics came to the shop floor in North America, involving ordinary workers in an early effort to prevent what was at the time an unknown problem - work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders. The actions included the beginning of a low-tech, practical improvement process that is still effective today. In total, the experience can provide encouragement to everybody to be confident in their ability when trying new endeavors and to remember that small initial steps can eventually lead to major change.
