RESUMEN

Treatment of sleep disorders promotes the long-term use of commercially available sleep inducers that have several adverse effects, including addiction, systemic fatigue, weakness, loss of concentration, headache, and digestive problems. Therefore, we aimed to limit these adverse effects by investigating a natural product, the extract of the Hibiscus syriacus Linnaeus flower (HSF), as an alternative treatment. In the electric footshock model, we measured anxiety and assessed the degree of sleep improvement after administering HSF extract. In the restraint model, we studied the sleep rate using PiezoSleep, a noninvasive assessment system. In the pentobarbital model, we measured sleep improvement and changes in sleep-related factors. Our first model confirmed the desirable effects of HSF extract and its active constituent, saponarin, on anxiolysis and Wake times. HSF extract also increased REM sleep time. Furthermore, HSF extract and saponarin increased the expression of cortical GABAA receptor α1 (GABAAR α1) and c-Fos in the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus (VLPO). In the second model, HSF extract and saponarin restored the sleep rate and the sleep bout duration. In the third model, HSF extract and saponarin increased sleep maintenance time. Moreover, HSF extract and saponarin increased cortical cholecystokinin (CCK) mRNA levels and the expression of VLPO c-Fos. HSF extract also increased GABAAR α1 mRNA level. Our results suggest that HSF extract and saponarin are effective in maintaining sleep and may be used as a novel treatment for sleep disorder. Eventually, we hope to introduce HSF and saponarin as a clinical treatment for sleep disorders in humans.

Background: Prenatal stress has been shown to affect the cognition of offspring, including memory and learning abilities.Methods: In the current study, the long-term effects of chronic prenatal exposure to the physical or psychological stress on locomotion and attention were evaluated by using open field test (OFT) and prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle reflex (ASR). In addition, the level of corticosterone was measured after the ASR trial.Results: Male and female rodents that underwent prenatal physical and psychological stress had an augmented velocity in OFT, and only male animals showed an increased ASR. Neither male nor female offsprings had an alteration in the level of corticosterone and PPI values regardless of the stress type.Conclusion: Our results revealed that exposure to stress during the development of fetus increases ASR in a sex-dependent manner. This finding might implicate the effect of prenatal stress on attention in male offspring regardless of the stress type.

Stress Recovery Theory (SRT) suggests that time spent in nature reduces stress. While many studies have examined changes in stress physiology after exposure to nature imagery, nature virtual reality, or nature walks, this study is the first to examine changes in heart rate (HR) and vagally mediated HR variability, as assessed by Respiratory Sinus Arrythmia (RSA), after a longer duration of nature exposure. Consistent with SRT, we hypothesized that immersion in nature would promote stress recovery, as indexed by an increase in RSA and a decrease in HR. We also predicted that exposure to nature would improve self-reported mood. We used a within-subjects design (N = 67) to assess changes in peripheral physiology before, during, and after a 5-day nature trip. Results demonstrated a significant decrease in RSA and a significant increase in HR during the trip compared to before or after the trip, suggesting that immersion in nature is associated with a shift toward parasympathetic withdrawal and possible sympathetic activation. These results were contrary to our hypotheses and may suggest increased attentional intake or presence of emotions associated with an increase in sympathetic activation. We also found an improvement in self-reported measures of mood during the trip compared to before or after the trip, confirming our hypotheses and replicating previous research. Implications of this study are discussed in the context of SRT.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Psychological therapies have showed benefits for both glycemic control and psychological outcomes in people with diabetes. However, the effects of mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) on glycemic control and psychological outcomes are inconsistent across studies, and the evidence for MBI has not been summarized. We aimed to identify the effects of MBI on glycemic control and psychological outcomes in people with diabetes by carrying out a systematic review and meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six databases (Pubmed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane, Web of science and PsycINFO) were searched from inception to October 2019. Randomized controlled trials of MBI for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes were included. Two authors independently extracted relevant data and assessed the risk of bias, with a third reviewer as arbitrator. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were also carried out. RESULTS: Eight studies with 841 participants met the eligibility criteria. Meta-analysis showed that MBI can slightly improve glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c; -0.25%, 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.43 to -0.07) and diabetes-related distress (-5.81, 95% CI -10.10 to -1.52) contribute to a moderate effect size in reducing depression (standardized mean difference -0.56, 95% CI -0.82 to -0.30) and stress (standardized mean difference -0.53, CI -0.75 to -0.31). Subgroup analyses showed greater HbA1c reductions in subgroups with baseline HbA1c levels <8% and follow-up duration >6 months. Mixed effects were observed for anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: MBI appears to have benefits on HbA1c, depression, stress and diabetes-related distress in people with diabetes. More rigorous studies with longer follow-up duration are warranted to establish the full potential of MBI.

Although extremely low-frequency electric fields (ELF-EF) have been utilised for therapeutic purposes, the biological effect and the underlying mechanism of ELF-EF have not been elucidated. Here, we developed a mouse model of immobilisation-induced increase in glucocorticoid (GC) to evaluate the effect of ELF-EF. Mice were exposed to 50-Hz 10 kV/m EF via a parallel plate electrode and immobilised as needed. The ELF-EF suppressed the immobilisation-induced increase in blood GC level. Here, the results of 32 tests using the model were pooled and analysed. The suppressive effect of ELF-EF on immobilisation-induced increase in GC was reproduced, and the GC level was slightly higher in the ELF-EF-treated mice than in the sham-controlled mice, a novel observation. The immobilisation-induced increase in lactate dehydrogenase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, and glutamic pyruvic transaminase, markers of tissue damage, was suppressed by co-treatment with EF in the biochemical tests using the same plasma sample. In the metabolome analysis, the changes in corticosterones, leukotrienes, and hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids, markers of inflammation, showed a pattern similar to that of the plasma GC level. Thus, ELF-EF suppresses the stress response that causes an increase in the GC level and slightly promotes GC production in the absence of stress. Moreover, the suppressive effect of ELF-EF on induced stress response might be involved in stress-induced tissue damage or inflammation in immobilised mice. Overall, the model and the data help explore the biological effect of ELF-EF and explain the stress-relieving effect of EF. They would be useful in determining the medical applications of EF in humans and animals.

Mustard leaf (Brassica juncea var. crispifolia L. H. Bailey) has been reported to have psychological properties such as anti-depressant activities. However, studies on chronic stress and depression caused by restraint have not been conducted. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of a mustard leaf (ML) extract on chronic restraint stress (CRS) in mice. Male mice were subjected to a CRS protocol for a period of four weeks to induce stress. The results showed that the ML extract (100 and 500 mg/kg/perorally administered for four weeks) significantly decreased corticosterone levels and increased neurotransmitters levels in stressed mice. Apoptosis by CRS exposure was induced by Bcl-2 and Bax expression regulation and was suppressed by reducing caspase-3 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase expression after treatment with the ML extract. Our results confirmed that apoptosis was regulated by increased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Additionally, cytokine levels were regulated by the ML extract. In conclusion, our results showed that the ML extract relieved stress effects by regulating hormones and neurotransmitters in CRS mice, BDNF expression, and apoptosis in the brain. Thus, it can be suggested that the studied ML extract is an agonist that can help relieve stress and depression.

Early life and adulthood stress increase vulnerability for mental illness, and eventually trigger depression. N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have antidepressant effects, but their effect on rats exposed to combined stress has been not investigated. This study aimed to investigate whether n-3 PUFA supplementation had antidepressant-like effects in rat models of depression induced by a combination of chronic mild stress (CMS) and maternal separation (MS) through the modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and neurotransmission. Rats were fed the n-3 PUFA diet during the pre-weaning or post-weaning period or for lifetime, and allocated to different groups based on the type of induced stress: non-stress (NS), CMS + MS, or CMS alone. N-3 PUFA improved the depressive behaviors of the CMS alone and CMS + MS groups and modulated the HPA-axis by reducing the circulating adrenocorticotropic hormone, corticosterone, and corticotropin-releasing factor expression, and increasing glucocorticoid receptor expression. N-3 PUFA also modulated brain phospholipid fatty acid concentration, thus reducing inflammatory cytokines; improved the serotonergic pathway, thus increasing the expression of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB), serotonin-1A receptor, and serum levels of serotonin; but did not affect glutamatergic neurotransmission. Furthermore, n-3 PUFA decreased the hippocampal expression of microRNA-218 and -132, increased that of microRNA-155, and its lifetime supplementation was more beneficial than pre- or post-weaning supplementation. This study suggests that n-3 PUFA has an antidepressant effect in rats exposed to combined stress, through the improvement of the HPA-axis abnormalities, the BDNF-serotonergic pathway, and the modulation of microRNAs.

Cognitive impairment has been widely recognized as a common symptom of chronic stress. Ginsenoside Rd (GRd), the major active compound in Panax ginseng, was previously reported in various neurological researches. However, little research is available regarding on the effect of GRd on cognitive improvement in mice subjected to chronic stress. In the present study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of GRd in chronic restraint stress (CRS)-induced cognitive deficits and explored the potential mechanism in male C57BL/6J mice. Our results demonstrated that oral administration of GRd for 28 days markedly increased the spontaneous alternation in Y-maze and the relative discrimination index in novel object or location recognition tests following CRS. Additionally, GRd treatment considerably increased the antioxidant enzymes activities in the hippocampus. The expression levels of hippocampus and serum inflammation factors in the CRS groups were also counter-regulated by GRd treatment. Meanwhile, GRd treatment could reverse CRS-induced the decrease in phosphorylated phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), camp-reflecting element binding protein (CREB), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) expression in the hippocampus. These findings provided evidences that GRd improves cognitive impairment in CRS mice by mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation, while upregulating the hippocampal BDNF-mediated CREB signaling pathway.

: We aimed to test the hypothesis that serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D) concentration is associated with mental health and life stress measures in young adults and investigate gender and racial disparities in these associations. This study comprised 327 black and white participants. Depression, trait anxiety, perceived stress, and hostility were measured by the following validated instruments: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (CMHS). Linear regression was used to estimate correlations between serum 25(OH)D concentration and mental health measurements in the total population and in subgroups stratified by gender and race. In this sample (28.2 ± 3.1 years, 52% female, 53% black), serum 25(OH)D concentration was negatively related to BDI, STAI, PSS, total CMHS score, and the majority of CMHS subscale scores (p-values < 0.05). Stratified by gender, most of these associations remained significant only in women (p-values < 0.05). Stratified by race, higher 25(OH)D concentrations in white participants were significantly related to lower BDI, STAI, PSS, and CMHS-cynicism subscales (p-values < 0.05); 25(OH)D concentrations in the black participants were only inversely associated with CMHS and most CMHS subscales (p-values < 0.05) but not with BDI, STAI, and PSS. We present novel findings of consistent inverse relationships between serum 25(OH)D concentration and various measures of mental health and life stress. Long-term interventional studies are warranted in order to investigate the roles of vitamin D supplementation in the prevention and mitigation of depression, anxiety, and psychological stress in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Wintering is associated with distress to humans who work in the isolated and confined environment of Antarctica and yoga has been proved helpful for coping with stress. Therefore, a study was conducted on 14 winter expedition members of Indian Scientific Antarctic Expedition (2016) to find out the effects of yoga on stress-related markers. METHODS: Participants were divided into yoga, and control (non-yoga) groups. The yoga group practiced yoga for 10 months (from January to October 2016) daily in the morning for an hour. The Resilience test questionnaire was administrated at baseline and endpoint of the study. Blood samples were collected during the study at different intervals for the estimation of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), serotonin and cortisol using ELISA. RESULTS: A trend of improvement was observed in the resilience test score in the yoga group. From January to October, 8-OHdG serum values in the yoga group declined by 55.9% from 1010.0 ± 67.8 pg/mL to 445.6 ± 60.5 pg/mL (Mean ± SD); in the control group, the decline was 49.9% from 1060.4 ± 54.6 pg/mL to 531.1 ± 81.8 pg/mL. In serotonin serum levels in the yoga group, there was a 3.1% increase from 6.4 ± 1.6 ng/mL to 6.6 ± 0.4 ng/mL while no increase was noticed in the control group. Cortisol values in the yoga group decreased by 19.9% from 321.0 ± 189.6 ng/mL to 257.1 ± 133.8 ng/mL; in the control group it increased by 2.8% from 241.2 ± 51.8 ng/mL to 247.8 ± 90.9 ng/mL. CONCLUSIONS: It could be concluded from the present study that following 10 months yoga practice may be useful for better resilience and management of stress-related blood markers for the polar sojourners.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Danzhi Xiaoyao Powder (DZXY) is a classical prescription, that has been extensively used in traditional Chinese medicine (TMC) to treat depression for many years. However, the mechanism of DZXY is still unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim was to investigate the mechanism of the antidepressant effect of DZXY on a rat model of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty male SD (Sprague-Dawley) rats with similar open field test (OFT) results were randomLy divided into a control group (n = 10) and an experimental group (n = 30). A depression model was established in the experimental group using the CUMS method. After the CUMS model was established successfully, the rats were randomLy divided into a depression model group and a DZXY group. The DZXY group was fed DZXY, while the depression model group and control group were given an equal amount of 0.5% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose suspension. Intragastric administration was performed once daily for 14 consecutive days. Animal weight, the sugar preference test, the open field test and the forced swimming test were used to evaluate the modeling effect and the antidepressant effect of DZXY. After the experiment, the plasma of rats was collected and the changes in plasma metabolites were analyzed by UPLC/Q-TOF-MS. The UPLC/Q-TOF-MS spectra data were evaluated by pattern recognition analysis to determine the changes in endogenous metabolites in the rat plasma samples. RESULTS: The results of the behavioral investigation showed that the rat model of depression was successfully replicated and that DZXY had an antidepressant effect. Using the UPLC-MS/MS metabolomics platform, partial least squares (PLS) and orthogonal partial least squares (OPLS), metabolic profile models (R2 and Q2 ≥ 0.5) of rat plasma were successfully constructed. The model could distinguish among the control group, the depression model group and the DZXY group. Finally, 38 differential metabolites were identified in the plasma. According to KEGG (http://www.kegg.jp) pathway analysis, amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism, purine metabolism, the prolactin signaling pathway and bile secretion were enriched and represented the main metabolic pathways influenced in the plasma. CONCLUSIONS: This study successfully established a CUMS depression model. A total of 38 differential metabolites associated with depression were identified in the plasma of rats, 24 of which were modulated by DZXY. These results suggest that DZXY can improve excitability and play an antidepressant role by regulating phenylalanine metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, porphyrin metabolism, D-arginine and D-ornithine metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis and steroid biosynthesis.

PURPOSE: Because the results of studies investigating the relation between human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and the effects of psychological stress are inconsistent, this study was conducted to expand on previous research by analyzing patient stress levels, serum immune parameters, and cortisol levels in patients with clinical HPV manifestations. It also looked for differences in clinical manifestations of HPV depending on patient level of experienced stress. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 213 subjects (94 women and 119 men aged ≥18 years; average age, 41 years) with clinical manifestations of HPV infection (165 subjects with extragenital manifestations and 48 with genital manifestations) who were treated at the Department of Dermatovenerology, Karlovac General Hospital, from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2015. Psychological, neurohormonal and immune parameters (serum values of leukocytes, alpha2-globulins, beta-globulins, albumins, and proteins), and serum cortisol levels were analyzed. Questionnaires were used to determine patients' perception of stress: the Recent Life Changes Questionnaire, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the Brief Cope Test. One group of subjects had confirmed stressful experiences, defined by the Recent Life Changes Questionnaire as a period of 1 year with at least 500 life change units; the control group included patients with no significant stressful experiences. FINDINGS: Patients with confirmed significant stress experience had a statistically significant higher degree of perception of stress. There were no statistically significant differences in terms of the impact of stress on clinical HPV manifestations (genital and extragenital), sex, lesional duration, or recurrence. In patients with significant stress experience, significantly higher values of leukocytes (6.68 × 109/L), alpha2-globulins (6.85 g/L), and beta-globulins (7.33 g/L) were observed. Adaptive coping and a lower perception of stress significantly reduced the chances of having extragenital manifestations by 2.63 times. A higher perception of stress significantly increased the likelihood of genital manifestations. IMPLICATIONS: Although this study found that stress increased the values of leukocytes, alpha2-globulins, and beta-globulins, no evidence was found that it affected clinical manifestations of HPV infection. The redundancy of the immune system could account for this finding. This study is among the first to investigate the correlation between psychological, neurohormonal, and immune indicators of stress.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Zoujin pill (ZJP), a medication used to treat gastrointestinal disorders since the 15th Century in China, have been reported to exert anti-depressant effects in various models. STUDY AIM: To assess the effects of ZJP on gastrointestinal function and depressive behavior in rats under chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), and to examine the underlying mechanisms related to brain-gut axis. METHODS: The rats suffered the stressor once daily for 5 weeks. ZJP (0.6 and 1.2 g/kg) and fluoxetine (15 mg/kg) as positive control were administered to the rats through gastric intubation once daily for 5 consecutive weeks. The anti-depression effects were compared by performing sucrose preference tests and open field tests. Gastrointestinal motility was investigated by determining the gastrointestinal transit rate and by electrogastrogram. The serum levels of the gastrointestinal hormone (GAS, MOT, VIP, SP), inflammatory cytokine (IL-1ß, IL-6; , TNFα) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) were assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. For monoamine neurotransmitters (NE, 5-HT, DA), the levels were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography and electrochemical detection in conjunction, which was applied on the samples taken from the hypothalamus, hippocampus, and striatum. RESULTS: The depression-like symptoms among rats under CUMS were significantly relieved by ZJP administration (0.6 and 1.2 g/kg). Gastrointestinal motility was also improved by restoring gastric electrical rhythm and promoting gastrointestinal propulsion. The ZJP at 0.6 g/kg dosage obviously up-regulated 5-HT and DA levels in hippocampus. The ZJP at 1.2 g/kg dosage could increase 5-HT and DA levels in hypothalamus, striatum, and hippocampus, while down-regulated the NE level in hypothalamus and hippocampus. ZJP also reversed the alterations in serum gastrointestinal hormones. Furthermore, treatment with ZJP significantly reduced levels of IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α and increased serum GLP-1 compared with the CUMS group. Fluoxetine also exerted similar anti-depressant effects in the absence of effects on gastrointestinal motility and the levels of serum hormone, inflammatory cytokine and GLP-1. CONCLUSION: ZJP imposed anti-depressant and gastrointestinal regulating functions in rats under CUMS, suggesting potential clinical application. .

Neuromedin U (NMU) is a highly conserved neuropeptide that has been implicated in the stress response. To better understand how it influences various aspects of the stress response, we studied the effects of intracerebroventricular NMU-8 administration on stress-related behavior and activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in male C57BL/6J mice. We investigated these NMU-8 effects when mice remained in their home cage and when they were challenged by exposure to forced swim stress. NMU-8 administration resulted in increased grooming behavior in mice that remained in their home cage and in a significant increase in c-Fos immunoreactivity in the paraventricular hypothalamus (PVH) and arcuate nucleus (ARC). Surprisingly, NMU-8 administration significantly decreased plasma corticosterone concentrations. Furthermore, NMU-8 administration increased immobility in the forced swim test in both naïve mice and mice that were previously exposed to swim stress. The effect of NMU-8 on c-Fos immunoreactivity in the PVH was dependent on previous exposure to swim stress given that we observed no significant changes in mice exposed for the first time to swim stress. In contrast, in the ARC we observed a significant increase in c-Fos immunoreactivity regardless of previous stress exposure. Interestingly, NMU-8 administration also significantly decreased plasma corticosterone concentrations in mice that were exposed to single forced swim stress, while this effect was no longer observed when mice were exposed to forced swim stress for a second time. Taken together, our data indicate that NMU-8 regulates stress responsiveness and suggests that its effects depend on previous stress exposure.

Introduction: Sleep disturbance and sleep disruption are associated with chronic, low grade inflammation and may underpin a range of chronic diseases in night shift workers. Through modulation of the intestinal microbiota, probiotic supplements may moderate the effects of sleep disruption on the immune system. The aim of this study was to examine 14 days of daily probiotic supplementation on the acute response of acute phase proteins and immune markers to sleep disruption associated with night shift work (Australia and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry: 12617001552370). Methods: Individuals (mean age 41 ± 11 yrs; 74% female) performing routine night shift were randomly assigned to a probiotic group (1 × 1010 colony forming units (CFU) Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 or 1 × 1010 CFU Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis UABla-12) or placebo (n= 29 per group). Participants undertook a 14-day supplementation period that coincided with a period of no night shifts followed by two consecutive night shifts. Blood samples were collected prior to the start of supplementation (V1), prior to commencing the first night shift (V2), after the first night shift (V3) and after the second night shift (V4). Serum was assessed for markers of stress (cortisol), acute phase response (C reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate, pentraxin), adhesion markers (serum E-selectin, mucosal vascular addressin cell adhesion molecule 1 (MAdCAM-1), and serum cytokines (interleukin (IL)-1ra, IL-1ß, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-10). Sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and a Fitbit activity tracker. Results: The groups were well balanced on key markers and the probiotic strains were well tolerated. The 14-day supplementation period that coincided with typical night-day sleep-wake cycles leading up to night shift (V1 to V2) was associated with significant changes in the placebo group in the concentration of serum cortisol (p = 0.01), pentraxin (p = 0.001), MAdCAM-1 (p = 0.001), and IL-1ra (p=0.03). In contrast, probiotic supplementation moderated changes in these serum markers from V1 to V2. No significant interaction effects (time by group) were observed for the serum markers prior to and after night shift work following probiotic supplementation due to the substantial changes in the serum markers that occurred during the normal sleep period from V1 to V2. Conclusions: Probiotics may moderate the effects of anticipatory stress on the immune system in the lead up to night shift.

This study tests a group-based secular contemplative practice intervention, Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT), with parents of young children. We report on a randomized controlled preliminary efficacy study. Certified teachers administered CBCT for 20 hr across 8 to 10 weeks in two cohorts of parents with infants and young children. The intervention group was compared to a waitlist control group. Thirty-nine parents and their children, who ranged in age from 4 months to 5 years, were evaluated at pre- and postintervention (n = 25 intervention, n = 14 waitlist control) on hair cortisol concentration. Parents also completed self-administered questionnaires at both time points regarding demographics, physical symptoms of stress, parenting stress, self-compassion, and mindfulness. Children of parents in the CBCT group experienced significant decreases in cortisol at the postintervention assessment, as compared with the control group. However, parent cortisol and self-report measures did not significantly change other than a small effect on clinical levels of parenting stress. CBCT may be a positive new way to intervene with parents to lower infants' and young children's cumulative physiological stress.


Este estudio puso a prueba una práctica de intervención contemplativa secular con base en un grupo, el Entrenamiento Compasivo con Base Cognitiva (CBCT), con padres de niños pequeños. Nosotros reportamos sobre un estudio de efectividad preliminar controlado al azar. Maestros titulados administraron el CBCT por 20 horas a lo largo de 8-10 semanas en dos grupos de padres con infantes y niños pequeños. El grupo de intervención fue comparado con un grupo de control en lista de espera. Treinta y nueve padres y sus niños, que oscilaban en edad de 4 meses a 5 años, fueron evaluados antes y después de la intervención (n=25 grupo de intervención, n=14 grupo de control en lista de espera) en cuanto a la concentración de cortisol en el cabello. Los padres también completaron cuestionarios auto-administrados en ambos momentos temporales con respecto a información demográfica, síntomas físicos de estrés, estrés de crianza, auto-compasión, así como plena conciencia. Los niños de padres en el grupo CBCT experimentaron una significativa disminución de cortisol al momento de la evaluación posterior a la intervención, tal como se les comparó con el grupo de control. Sin embargo, el cortisol de los padres y las medidas de auto-reporte no cambiaron significativamente. El CBCT pudiera ser una nueva manera positiva de intervenir con padres para reducir el estrés fisiológico cumulativo de infantes y niños pequeños.


Cette étude a testé une intervention de pratique contemplative séculaire et basée sur un groupe, la Formation de Compassion Cognitive (abrégé ici selon l'anglais CBCT), avec des parents de jeunes enfants. Cet article porte sur une étude d'efficacité préliminaire randomisée et contrôlée. Des formateurs certifiés ont procédé à une CBCT de 20 heures réparties sur 8-10 semaines chez deux cohortes de parents avec des nourrissons et des jeunes enfants. Le groupe d'intervention a été comparé à un groupe de contrôle en liste d'attente. Trente-neuf parents et leurs enfants, allant de 4 mois à 5 ans d'âge, ont été évalués avant et après l'intervention (n=25 intervention, n=14 contrôle de liste d'attente) sur la concentration de cortisol capillaire. Les parents ont également rempli des questionnaires auto-administrés aux deux temps d'évaluation, concernant des données démographiques, les symptômes physiques de stress, le stress de parentage, l'auto-compassion et la pleine conscience. Les enfants de parents du groupe CBCT ont fait preuve de baisses de niveau de cortisol importantes à l'évaluation post-intervention en comparaison au groupe de contrôle. Cependant le cortisol parental et les mesures auto-rapportées n'ont pas changé de manière importante. La CBCT peut être une nouvelle manière positive d'intervenir avec les parents afin de faire baisser le stress physiologique cumulatif des nourrissons et des jeunes enfants.

OBJECTIVES: There is currently no evidence that whether magnesium supplementation would improve stress-induced hyperglycemia (SIH) in critically ill patients. In this study, effects of magnesium loading dose on insulin resistance (IR) indices were evaluated in critically ill patients without diabetes having SIH. METHODS: Seventy critically ill patients with SIH were assigned to receive a loading dose of magnesium (7.5 g of magnesium sulfate in 500 mL normal saline as intravenous infusion over an 8-hour period) or placebo. Changes in baseline of serum and intracellular magnesium and serum adiponectin (AD) levels, homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR), and HOMA-AD ratio were assessed in this study. RESULTS: Serum and intracellular magnesium levels increased significantly in patients in the magnesium group (P < .001). At day 3, there were significant differences between the magnesium group and the placebo group in the mean changes from baseline in the HOMA (between-group difference: -0.11; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.19 to -0.01; P = .02), the AD (between-group difference: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.41-1.48; P = .04), and the HOMA-AD ratio (between-group difference: -0.03; 95% CI: -0.04 to -0.01; P < .001). CONCLUSION: In the present study, a single-loading dose of intravenous magnesium improved IR indices in critically ill patients with SIH.

We developed an experimental system to characterize the suppressive effect of extremely low-frequency (ELF) electric fields (EFs) on the stress response. We assessed differences in the EF effects by age and gender. Control, EF-alone, immobilization-alone, and co-treated groups were subjected to an EF (50 Hz, 10 kV/m). Co-treated mice were exposed to the EF for 60 min, with immobilization during the latter half. Our results indicate that the suppressive effects of ELF EFs on the stress response in immobilized mice occur regardless of gender or age. As stress plays an important role in the onset and progression of various diseases, these findings may have broad implications for understanding the efficacy of EFs in animal, and perhaps human, health. Background Nowadays, yoga is endorsed and advised routinely to stay fit and healthy, as well as control many chronic diseases including diabetes type 2, hypertension, coronary artery diseases, etc. Now, our assumption is that those who do regular yoga have different persona than who do not do yoga regularly. We planned to test our hypothesis scientifically, and therefore baseline physiological characteristics with stress and inflammation levels in long-term and short-term meditators and healthy novice controls were analyzed. Methods In this retrospective analysis, 97 male participants were included for their Baseline analysis. Fifteen apparently healthy subjects practicing preksha meditation (since >5 years, at least 5 days a week) were included as long-term meditators (LTMs); 58 subjects who attended one of our short-term yoga-based lifestyle intervention programs for 2 weeks were included as short-term meditators (STMs); 24 male novice subjects, who did not participate in any yogic intervention, were included as healthy controls. Here, we analyzed the Baseline plasma levels of stress and inflammatory markers, cortisol, ß-endorphin, interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in long-term meditators vs. short-term meditators vs. healthy controls. Outcome measures The study parameters body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), plasma levels of stress and immune markers, cortisol, ß-endorphin (ß-Ed), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), were assessed in all the three groups at baseline. Results Significant (p<0.05) differences were observed at baseline for plasma levels of stress and inflammatory markers as well as body mass index and systolic blood pressure among LTM vs. STM vs. healthy controls. Conclusions Our observations suggest that the subjects who do regular yoga-meditation practice have better stress & inflammation status than comparable age matched healthy controls.
