RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of beetroot juice supplementation (BEET) on neuromuscular fatigue etiology during simulated soccer match play. In a randomized, double-blind, crossover design, 13 soccer players completed the Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test (LIST). Players received either BEET (2×150 mL; ∼8 mmol/L nitrate) or placebo (PLA) for 7 days (6 days prior to the experimental session and on the day of trial, 2 h before LIST). Neuromuscular assessments were performed at baseline, 45 min (half time: HT), and 90 min (full time: FT) following LIST. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and twitch responses, delivered through electrical femoral nerve stimulation, were used to assess peripheral (quadriceps resting twitch force Qtw,pot) and central fatigue (voluntary activation, VA). Compared with baseline, MVC Qtw,pot and VA values decreased in PLA and BEET conditions at HT and FT (P < 0.05). Compared with PLA, the decrease in MVC and Qtw,pot was significantly attenuated with BEET at HT and FT (P < 0.001). Likewise, BEET attenuated the decrease in VA at HT (P < 0.001, d = 1.3) and FT (P < 0.001, d = 1.5) compared with the PLA condition. Chronic beetroot juice supplementation attenuates neuromuscular fatigue development during simulated soccer matches, and this is due to both central and peripheral factors. Consequently, chronic beetroot may optimize physical performance.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine if peripheral fatigue is adjusted during knee extensor (KE) exercise in order not to surpass a critical threshold patient with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the consequences of this mechanism on the force-duration relationship. METHODS: Eleven T1D individuals randomly performed two different sessions in which they performed 60 maximum voluntary contractions (MVC; 3 s contraction, 2 s relaxation). One trial was performed in the non-fatigued state (CTRL) and another after fatiguing neuromuscular stimulation of the KE (FNMES). Peripheral and central fatigue were quantified by the difference between pre and post exercise in quadriceps voluntary activation (ΔVA) and potentiated twitch (ΔPtw). Critical torque (CT) was determined as the average force of the last 12 contractions, whereas W' was calculated as the area above the CT. RESULTS: Although FNMES led to a significant decrease in potentiated twitch (Ptw) before performing the 60-MVCs protocol (p < 0.05), ΔVA (∼ -7.5%), ΔPtw (∼ -39%), and CT (∼816 N) post-MVCs were similar between the two conditions. The difference in W' between CTRL and FNMES was correlated with the level of pre-fatigue induced in FNMES (r2 = 0.60). In addition, W' was correlated with ΔPtw (r2 = 0.62) in the CTRL session. CONCLUSION: Correlative results in the present study indicate that regulating peripheral fatigue mechanisms at a critical threshold limit W'. Additionally, peripheral fatigue during KE exercise is limited to an individual threshold in T1D patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of functional electrical stimulation (FES) on muscle strength, fatigue, muscle mass, and quality of life (QoL) in older patients with COVID-19. METHODS: Older patients with COVID-19 were randomly divided into the following 2 groups: real FES (intervention group, n = 20) and sham FES (control group, n = 20). These patients received FES concurrent with the voluntary contraction of muscles for 10 consecutive sessions. Ultrasound imaging, pressure biofeedback, Chalder fatigue scale, and QoL were utilized to measure muscle mass, muscle strength, chronic fatigue, and QoL, respectively. Evaluations were performed at the beginning, immediately, and 1 month after the end of intervention. RESULTS: All variables showed statistically significant improvement immediately and 1 month after the intervention in the real FES group (P < .05). However, the tibialis anterior muscle mass and fatigue significantly improved immediately after the intervention in the sham FES group. However, the tibialis anterior and rectus femoris muscles strength and rectus femoris muscle mass were not significantly changed immediately and 1 month after the intervention (P > .05). There were significant differences in muscle mass, physical fatigue, muscle strength, and QoL between groups with more efficacy of real FES (P < .05). CONCLUSION: For this sample of patients, FES improved fatigue, muscle strength, muscle mass, and QoL in older adults with COVID-19.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if aging would lead to greater decline in neuromuscular function during a fatiguing task under severe whole-body hyperthermia conditions. METHODS: Twelve young (aged 19-21 years) and 11 older (aged 65-80 years) males were enrolled in the study, which comprised a randomized control trial under a thermoneutral condition at an ambient temperature of 23°C (CON) and an experimental trial with passive lower body heating in 43°C water (HWI-43°C). Changes in neuromuscular function and fatigability, and physical performance-influencing factors such as psychological, thermoregulatory, neuroendocrine, and immune responses to whole-body hyperthermia were measured. RESULTS: A slower increase in rectal temperature, and a lower heart rate, thermal sensation, and sweating rate were observed in older males than young males in response to HWI-43°C trial (p < 0.05). Nevertheless, prolactin increased more in response to hyperthermia in young males, while interleukin-6 and cortisol levels increased more in older males (p < 0.05). Peripheral dopamine levels decreased in older males and increased in young males in response to hyperthermia (p < 0.05). Surprisingly, older males demonstrated greater neuromuscular fatigability resistance and faster maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque recovery after a 2-min sustained isometric MVC task under thermoneutral and severe hyperthermic conditions (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Neuromuscular performance during fatigue-provoking sustained isometric exercise under severe whole-body hyperthermia conditions appears to decline in both age groups, but a lower relative decline in torque production for older males may relate to lower psychological and thermophysiological strain along with a diminished dopamine response and prolactin release.

AIM: To quantify the physiological demands and impact of muscle function t of the Fran workout, one of the most popular CrossFit benchmarks. METHODS: Twenty experienced CrossFitters-16 male: 29 (6) years old and 4 female: 26 (5) years old- performed 3 rounds (with 30-s rests in between) of 21-21, 15-15, and 9-9 front squats to overhead press plus pull-up repetitions. Oxygen uptake and heart rate were measured at baseline, during the workout, and in the recovery period. Rating of perceived exertion, blood lactate, and glucose concentrations were assessed at rest, during the intervals, and in the recovery period. Muscular fatigue was also monitored at rest and at 5 minutes, 30 minutes, and 24 hours postexercise. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was performed to compare time points. RESULTS: Aerobic (52%-29%) and anaerobic alactic (30%-23%) energy contributions decreased and the anaerobic lactic contribution increased (18%-48%) across the 3 rounds of the Fran workout. Countermovement jump height decreased by 8% (-12 to -3) mean change (95% CI), flight duration by 14% (-19 to -7), maximum velocity by 3% (-5 to -0.1), peak force 4% (-7 to -0.1), and physical performance (plank prone 47% [-54 to -38]) were observed. CONCLUSIONS: It appears that the Fran workout is a physically demanding activity that recruits energy from both aerobic and anaerobic systems. This severe-intensity workout evokes substantial postexercise fatigue and corresponding reduction in muscle function.

PURPOSE: We investigated whether a 4-wk period of respiratory muscle endurance training (RMET) or respiratory muscle sprint interval training (RMSIT) would lead to an attenuation of inspiratory muscle and quadriceps fatigue after a bout of high-intensity cycling compared with a placebo intervention (PLAT), as predicted by the respiratory metaboreflex model. METHODS: Thirty-three active, young healthy adults performed RMET, RMSIT, or PLAT. Changes in inspiratory muscle and quadriceps twitches in response to a cycling test at 90% of peak work capacity were assessed before and after training. EMG activity and deoxyhemoglobin (HHb, via near-infrared spectroscopy) of the quadriceps and inspiratory muscles were also monitored during the cycling test, along with cardiorespiratory and perceptual variables. RESULTS: At pretraining, cycling reduced the twitch force of the inspiratory muscles (86% ± 11% baseline) and quadriceps (66% ± 16% baseline). Training did not attenuate the drop in twitch force of the inspiratory muscles (PLAT, -3.5 ± 4.9 percent-points [p.p.]; RMET, 2.7 ± 11.3 p.p.; RMSIT, 4.1 ± 8.5 p.p.; group-training interaction, P = 0.394) or quadriceps (PLAT, 3.8 ± 18.6 p.p.; RMET, -2.6 ± 14.0 p.p.; RMSIT, 5.2 ± 9.8 p.p.; group-training interaction P = 0.432). EMG activity and HHb levels during cycling did not change after training for either group. Only RMSIT showed a within-group decrease in the perception of respiratory exertion with training. CONCLUSIONS: Four weeks of RMET or RMSIT did not attenuate the development of exercise-induced inspiratory or quadriceps fatigue. The ergogenic effects of respiratory muscle training during whole-body exercise might be related to an attenuation of perceptual responses.

Fatigue is a common physiological response that is closely related to energy metabolism. Polysaccharides, as excellent dietary supplements, have been proven to have a variety of pharmacological activities. In this study, A 23.007 kDa polysaccharide from Armillaria gallica (AGP) was purified and performed structural characterization, including analysis of homogeneity, molecular weight and monosaccharide composition. Methylation analysis is used to analyze the glycosidic bond composition of AGP. The mouse model of acute fatigue was used to evaluate the anti-fatigue effect of AGP. AGP-treatment improved exercise endurance in mice and reduced fatigue symptoms caused by acute exercise. AGP regulated the levels of adenosine triphosphate, lactic acid, blood urea nitrogen and lactate dehydrogenase, muscle glycogen and liver glycogen of acute fatigue mice. AGP affected the composition of intestinal microbiota, the changes of some intestinal microorganisms are correlated with fatigue and oxidative stress indicators. Meanwhile, AGP reduced oxidative stress levels, increased antioxidant enzyme activity and regulated the AMP-dependent protein kinase/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 signaling pathway. AGP exerted an anti-fatigue effect through modulation of oxidative stress, which is related to intestinal microbiota.

PURPOSE: Despite early development of muscle fatigue, ischemic preconditioning is gaining popularity for strength training combined with low-load resistance exercise. This study investigated the effect of low-level laser (LLL) on postcontraction recovery with ischemic preconditioning. METHODS: Forty healthy adults (22.9 ± 3.5 yr) were allocated into sham (11 men, 9 women) and LLL (11 men, 9 women) groups. With ischemic preconditioning, they were trained with three bouts of intermittent wrist extension of 40% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). During the recovery period, the LLL group received LLL (wavelength of 808 nm, 60 J) on the working muscle, whereas the sham group received no sham therapy. MVC, force fluctuations, and discharge variables of motor units (MU) for a trapezoidal contraction were compared between groups at baseline (T0), postcontraction (T1), and after-recovery (T2). RESULTS: At T2, the LLL group exhibited a higher normalized MVC (T2/T0; 86.22% ± 12.59%) than that of the sham group (71.70% ± 13.56%; P = 0.001). The LLL group had smaller normalized force fluctuations (LLL, 94.76% ± 21.95%; sham, 121.37% ± 29.02%; P = 0.002) with greater normalized electromyography amplitude (LLL, 94.33% ± 14.69%; sham, 73.57% ± 14.94%; P < 0.001) during trapezoidal contraction. In the LLL group, the smaller force fluctuations were associated with lower coefficients of variation of interspike intervals of MUs (LLL, 0.202 ± 0.053; sham, 0.208 ± 0.048; P = 0.004) with higher recruitment thresholds (LLL, 11.61 ± 12.68 %MVC; sham, 10.27 ± 12.73 %MVC; P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: LLL expedites postcontraction recovery with ischemic preconditioning, manifesting as superior force generation capacity and force precision control for activation of MU with a higher recruitment threshold and lower discharge variability.

This study aimed to analyse unilateral countermovement jumps (CMJ) performance and muscle soreness in lower limbs, as well as to compare lower limb asymmetry over 48h after a stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) fatigue protocol. Fourteen judo athletes performed unilateral CMJ on each leg before, and after the 5th and 10th sets over 24h and 48h of an SSC-fatigue protocol. The SSC protocol reduced CMJ performance after the 5th set and 10th sets, especially in the weaker limb (p < 0.05), but returned to the baseline values after 24h. Asymmetry increased for peak force, peak power, and mean power after the 5th set compared to the baseline (p < 0.05) and remained higher for peak force after the 10th set (p = 0.019), returning to the baseline values after 24h (p < 0.05). Soreness increased for the lower body at post, 24h, and 48h compared to the baseline (p < 0.05). In conclusion, a fatiguing SSC protocol can result in increased bilateral asymmetries in judo athletes, but after 24h and 48h of the protocol the bilateral asymmetry returned to the baseline values, with only muscle soreness still elevated.

ABSTRACT: Kilohertz-frequency alternating current is used to minimize muscle atrophy and muscle weakness and improve muscle performance. However, no systematic reviews have evaluated the best Kilohertz-frequency alternating current parameters for this purpose. We investigated the effects of the carrier frequency, burst duty cycles, and burst durations on evoked torque, perceived discomfort, and muscle fatigue. A search of eight data sources by two independent reviewers resulted in 13 peer-reviewed studies being selected, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, and rated using the PEDro scale to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies. Most studies showed that carrier frequencies up to 1 kHz evoked higher torque, while carrier frequencies between 2.5 and 5 kHz resulted in lower perceived discomfort. In addition, most studies showed that shorter burst duty cycles (10%-50%) induced higher evoked torque and lower perceived discomfort. Methodological quality scores ranged from 5 to 8 on the PEDro scale. We conclude that Kilohertz-frequency alternating current develops greater evoked torque for carrier frequencies between 1 and 2.5 kHz and burst duty cycles less than 50%. Lower perceived discomfort was generated using Kilohertz-frequency alternating currents between 2.5 and 5 kHz and burst duty cycles less than 50%.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in combination with blood flow restriction (BFR) enhances muscle hypertrophy and force-generating capacity. The present study aimed to investigate the acute effects of BFR and NMES, both in isolation and in combination, on muscle thickness (MT) and fatigue in the lower body of 20 young healthy subjects. Different stimuli were applied for 25 min, defined by the combination of BFR with high- and low-frequency NMES, and also isolated BFR or NMES. Changes in MT were then evaluated by ultrasound of the rectus femoris (RF) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles at the end of the session (POST) and 15 min later (POST 15'). Lower limb fatigue was evaluated indirectly by strength performance. Results showed that RF MT was higher under the combined protocol (BFR + NMES) or isolated BFR than under NMES - regardless of the frequency - both at POST (p ≤ 0.018) and POST 15' (p ≤ 0.016). No significant changes in MT were observed under isolated NMES or BFR at POST 15' when compared with basal values (p ≥ 0.067). No significant differences were observed for VL MT between conditions (p = 0.322) or for fatigue between conditions (p ≥ 0.258). Our results indicate that a combination of BFR and NMES acutely increases MT in sedentary subjects. Also, although not significantly, BFR conditions had a greater tendency to induce fatigue than isolated NMES.HighlightsThe combination of blood flow restriction (BFR) and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) produces higher acute cell swelling than the isolated application of either NMES or BFR.BFR in isolation appears to produce greater cell swelling than NMES, regardless of the frequency used.BFR conditions had a greater tendency to induce fatigue than isolated NMES.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Skiing is a sport that demands the high performance of motor coordination with high energy consumption, factors that strongly influence muscle fatigue. Athletes who experience this phenomenon tend to present a decline in performance, generating psychological irritability and impairment in concentration. Diet is closely related to athletic performance, but the proper prescription for skiing athletes still lacks studies. Objective: To explore the methods of recovery from sports fatigue in skiers by providing up-to-date perspectives for effective nutritional intervention during the recovery stage. Methods: Seven young male skiers were selected as research subjects, and caloric intake, among other conditions, was recorded in detail. After three weeks, indices of body weight, body fat rate, serum metabolism, cardiopulmonary capacity, and energy metabolism, among other relevant information, were duly recorded and compared. Results: The intervention did not significantly impact lean body mass indices (p>0.05). The athletes' body weight decreased significantly, and the body fat rate decreased significantly after the nutritional intervention; The analyzed biomarkers were positively impacted, except the urea nitrogen concentration that showed a tendency to increase after the nutritional intervention, an effect that may be linked to the proportional increase of protein intake. Conclusion: The proposed nutritional intervention positively impacted the skiers' energy metabolism, directly impacting the athletes' recovery from sports fatigue. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment outcomes.


RESUMO Introdução: O esqui é um esporte que exige alto desempenho de coordenação motora com um elevado consumo de energia, fatores que influenciam fortemente a fadiga muscular. Atletas que experienciam esse fenômeno, tendem a apresentar um declínio no nível do desempenho, gerando irritabilidade psicológica e prejuízos na concentração. A dieta está intimamente relacionada ao desempenho atlético, porém a receita adequada para os atletas em esqui ainda carece de estudos. Objetivo: Explorar os métodos de recuperação da fadiga esportiva nos esquiadores fornecendo perspectivas atualizadas para uma intervenção nutricional eficaz durante a etapa de recuperação. Métodos: Sete jovens esquiadores do sexo masculino foram selecionados como sujeitos da pesquisa, e a ingestão calórica, entre outras condições foram detalhadamente registradas. Após três semanas, índices de peso corporal, taxa de gordura corporal, metabolismo sérico, capacidade cardiopulmonar, metabolismo energético, entre outras informações relevantes foram devidamente registradas e comparadas. Resultados: A intervenção não impactou significativamente nos índices de massa magra corporal (p>0,05). O peso corporal dos atletas diminuiu significativamente e a taxa de gordura corporal diminuiu significativamente após a intervenção nutricional; os biomarcadores analisados foram positivamente impactados, a exceção da concentração de nitrogênio ureico que apresentou tendência de alta após a intervenção nutricional, efeito que pode estar atrelado ao aumento proporcional da ingesta proteica. Conclusão: A proposta de intervenção nutricional apresentou impactos positivos no metabolismo energético dos esquiadores, impactando diretamente na recuperação da fadiga esportiva dos atletas. Nível de evidência II; Estudos terapêuticos - investigação dos resultados do tratamento.


RESUMEN Introducción: El esquí es un deporte que exige un alto rendimiento de coordinación motora con un elevado consumo de energía, factores que influyen fuertemente en la fatiga muscular. Los deportistas que experimentan este fenómeno, tienden a presentar un descenso en el nivel de rendimiento, generando irritabilidad psicológica y daños en la concentración. La dieta está estrechamente relacionada con el rendimiento deportivo, pero la prescripción adecuada para los atletas de esquí aún carece de estudios. Objetivo: Explorar los métodos de recuperación de la fatiga deportiva en los esquiadores proporcionando perspectivas actualizadas para una intervención nutricional eficaz durante la etapa de recuperación. Métodos: Se seleccionaron siete jóvenes esquiadores varones como sujetos de investigación, y se registró detalladamente la ingesta calórica, entre otras condiciones. Al cabo de tres semanas, se registraron y compararon debidamente los índices de peso corporal, el índice de grasa corporal, el metabolismo sérico, la capacidad cardiopulmonar y el metabolismo energético, entre otros datos relevantes. Resultados: La intervención no tuvo un impacto significativo en los índices de masa corporal magra (p>0,05). El peso corporal de los atletas disminuyó significativamente y el índice de grasa corporal disminuyó significativamente después de la intervención nutricional. Los biomarcadores analizados tuvieron un impacto positivo, con la excepción de la concentración de nitrógeno ureico que mostró una tendencia a aumentar después de la intervención nutricional, efecto que puede estar relacionado con el aumento proporcional de la ingesta de proteínas. Conclusión: La propuesta de intervención nutricional presentó impactos positivos en el metabolismo energético de los esquiadores, impactando directamente en la recuperación de la fatiga deportiva de los atletas. Muscle fatigue is a risk factor for developing musculoskeletal disorders during low-load repetitive tasks. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of muscle fatigue on power spectrum changes of upper limb and trunk acceleration and angular velocity during a repetitive pointing task (RPT) and a work task. Twenty-four participants equipped with 11 inertial measurement units, that include acceleration and gyroscope sensors, performed a tea bag filling work task before and immediately after a fatiguing RPT. During the RPT, the power spectrum of acceleration and angular velocity increased in the movement and in 6-12 Hz frequency bands for sensors positioned on the head, sternum, and pelvis. Alternatively, for the sensor positioned on the hand, the power spectrum of acceleration and angular velocity decreased in the movement frequency band. During the work task, following the performance of the fatiguing RPT, the power spectrum of acceleration and angular velocity increased in the movement frequency band for sensors positioned on the head, sternum, pelvis, and arm. Interestingly, for both the RPT and work task, Cohens' d effect sizes were systematically larger for results extracted from angular velocity than acceleration. Although fatigue-related changes were task-specific between the RPT and the work task, fatigue systematically increased the power spectrum in the movement frequency band for the head, sternum, pelvis, which highlights the relevance of this indicator for assessing fatigue. Angular velocity may be more efficient to assess fatigue than acceleration. The use of low cost, wearable, and uncalibrated sensors, such as acceleration and gyroscope, in industrial settings is promising to assess muscle fatigue in workers assigned to upper limb repetitive tasks.

Citrulline malate (CM) has been shown to improve muscle performance in healthy participants during a single exercise session. Yet, within the framework of exercises repeated at close time interval, the consequences of CM ingestion on mechanical performance are controversial and the bioenergetics side remains undocumented. The aim of this double-blind placebo-controlled study was to evaluate in vivo the effect of short-term (7 doses in 48 h) oral administration of CM upon gastrocnemius muscle function and bioenergetics using non-invasive multimodal NMR techniques in healthy rats. The experimental protocol consisted of two 6-min bouts of fatiguing exercise spaced by an 8-min recovery period. CM treatment did not affect the basal bioenergetics status and increased the half-fatigue time during the first exercise bout. With exercise repetition, it prevented PCr cost alteration and decreased both the glycolytic ATP production and the contractile ATP cost in working muscle, but these changes were not associated to any improvement in mechanical performance. In addition, CM did not influence the replenishment of high-energy phosphorylated compounds during the post-exercise recovery periods. Therefore, short-term CM administration enhances muscle bioenergetics throughout fatiguing bouts of exercise repeated at close time interval but this enhancement does not benefit to mechanical performance.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of submaximal isometric neck muscle fatigue and manual therapy on wrist joint position sense (JPS) within healthy individuals and individuals with subclinical neck pain (SCNP). METHODS: Twelve healthy participants and 12 participants with SCNP were recruited. Each group completed 2 sessions, with 48 hours between sessions. On day 1, both groups performed 2 wrist JPS tests using a robotic device. The tests were separated by a submaximal isometric fatigue protocol for the cervical extensor muscles (CEM). On day 2, both groups performed a wrist JPS test, followed by a cervical treatment consisting of manual therapy (SCNP) or neck rest (20 minutes, control group) and another wrist JPS test. Joint position sense was measured as the participant's ability to recreate a previously presented wrist angle. Each wrist JPS test included 12 targets, 6 into wrist flexion and 6 into wrist extension. Kinematic data from the robot established absolute, variability, and constant error. RESULTS: Absolute error significantly decreased (P = .01) from baseline to post-fatigue in the SCNP group (baseline = 4.48 ± 1.58°; post-fatigue = 3.90 ± 1.45°) and increased in the control group (baseline = 3.12 ± 0.98°; post-fatigue = 3.81 ± 0.90°). The single session of manual cervical treatment significantly decreased absolute error in participants with SCNP (P = .004). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that neck pain or fatigue can lead to altered afferent input to the central nervous system and can affect wrist JPS. Our findings demonstrate that acute wrist proprioception may be improved in individuals with SCNP by a single cervical manual therapy session.

Intramuscular hydrogen ion (H+ ) and inorganic phosphate (Pi) concentrations were dissociated during exercise to challenge their relationships with peripheral and central fatigue in vivo. Ten recreationally active, healthy men (27 ± 5 years; 180 ± 4 cm; 76 ± 10 kg) performed two consecutive intermittent isometric single-leg knee-extensor trials (60 maximal voluntary contractions; 3 s contraction, 2 s relaxation) interspersed with 5 min of rest. Phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31 P-MRS) was used to continuously quantify intramuscular [H+ ] and [Pi] during both trials. Using electrical femoral nerve stimulation, quadriceps twitch force (Qtw ) and voluntary activation (VA) were quantified at rest and throughout both trials. Decreases in Qtw and VA from baseline were used to determine peripheral and central fatigue, respectively. Qtw was strongly related to both [H+ ] (ß coefficient: -0.9, P < 0.0001) and [Pi] (-1.1, P < 0.0001) across trials. There was an effect of trial on the relationship between Qtw and [H+ ] (-0.5, P < 0.0001), but not Qtw and [Pi] (0.0, P = 0.976). This suggests that, unlike the unaltered association with [Pi], a given level of peripheral fatigue was associated with a different [H+ ] in Trial 1 vs. Trial 2. VA was related to [H+ ] (-0.3, P < 0.0001), but not [Pi] (-0.2, P = 0.243), across trials and there was no effect of trial (-0.1, P = 0.483). Taken together, these results support intramuscular Pi as a primary cause of peripheral fatigue, and muscle acidosis, probably acting on group III/IV muscle afferents in the interstitial space, as a contributor to central fatigue during exercise. KEY POINTS: We investigated the relationship between intramuscular metabolites and neuromuscular function in humans performing two maximal, intermittent, knee-extension trials interspersed with 5 min of rest. Concomitant measurements of intramuscular hydrogen (H+ ) and inorganic phosphate (Pi) concentrations, as well as quadriceps twitch-force (Qtw ) and voluntary activation (VA), were made throughout each trial using phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31 P-MRS) and electrical femoral nerve stimulations. Although [Pi] fully recovered prior to the onset of the second trial, [H+ ] did not. Qtw was strongly related to both [H+ ] and [Pi] across both trials. However, the relationship between Qtw and [H+ ] shifted leftward from the first to the second trial, whereas the relationship between Qtw and [Pi] remained unaltered. VA was related to [H+ ], but not [Pi], across both trials. These in vivo findings support the hypotheses of intramuscular Pi as a primary cause of peripheral fatigue, and muscle acidosis, probably acting on group III/IV muscle afferents, as a contributor to central fatigue.

OBJECTIVE: A critical limitation in clinical applications using functional electrical stimulation (FES) for rehabilitation exercises is the rapid onset of muscle fatigue. Spatially distributed sequential stimulation (SDSS) has been demonstrated to reduce muscle fatigue during FES compared to conventional single electrode stimulation (SES) in single joint movements. Here we investigated the fatigue reducing ability of SDSS in a clinical application, i.e., FES-rowing, in able-bodied (AB) participants. METHODS: FES was delivered to the quadriceps and hamstring of 15 AB participants (five female, ten male) for fatiguing FES-rowing trials using SES and SDSS, participants rowed with voluntary arm effort while endeavoring to keep their legs relaxed. Fatigue was characterized by the time elapsed until a percent decrease occurred in power output (TTF), as well as the trial length indicating the time elapsed until the complete stop of rowing. RESULT: Trial length was significantly longer in SDSS rowing than in SES (t-test, , d=0.71 ), with an average SDSS:SES trial length ratio of 1.31 ± 0.47. TTF SDSS was significantly longer than TTF SES with a median TTF SDSS :TTF SES ratio of 1.34 ranging from 1.03 to 5.41 (Wilcoxon Ranked Sum, , r=0.62 ). No rower experienced a decrease in TTF with SDSS. CONCLUSION: SDSS reduced fatigue during FES-rowing when compared to SES in AB individuals, resulting in a lengthened FES-rowing period by approximately 30%. Application of SDSS would increase the effectiveness of FES-rowing as rehabilitative exercise for individuals with paralyses.

To investigate the effect of two photobiomodulation approaches on trunk flexor performance after incisional hernia repair and to compare the effects of both wavelengths. Forty-five patients were randomly distributed after isokinetic trunk flexor assessments into infrared laser, red laser, and placebo groups. Each patient received laser treatment followed by a traditional physical therapy program. In laser treatment, 24 points in both recti were irradiated by infrared or red laser light with the following parameters; 0.6 J per point, 214.28 J/cm2 as energy density, and 17.85 W/cm2 as intensity, while the control group received a placebo approach. All groups received clinical treatments at a rate of 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks; in addition, the physical therapy program was continued on other days for all groups. Isokinetic trunk flexor strength was measured before treatment and 4 weeks after treatment as in each measurement, fatigue protocol was designed, and the trunk flexor strength was measured before fatigue test while the trunk flexor resistance to fatigue was measured after fatigue test. After 4 weeks, pre-and post-fatigue trunk flexor strengths in both laser groups were significantly increased compared to pre-and post-fatigue trunk flexor strength in the placebo group, respectively, and there was no significant difference between the two laser groups. Photobiomodulation approaches enhance trunk flexor response to exercise after incisional hernia repair. This enhancement leads to greater strength and more fatigue resistance for the trunk flexors in photobiomodulation groups compared to the placebo group and no difference between the two photobiomodulation effects.

Motor imagery (MI) shares psychological and physiological similarities with the physical practice of the same action. Yet, it remains unclear whether fatigue elicited by exercise impairs MI ability. Fourteen participants performed MI of a self-paced walking sequence of 22 m before and after a resistance exercise eliciting muscle fatigue from upper and lower limbs, selectively. We indexed MI ability using psychometric and behavioral methods. Electromyography of the quadriceps was also recorded during physical practice trials of the walking sequence. For both experimental conditions, we recorded improved temporal congruence between MI and physical practice of the walking sequence (9.89 %, 95 % CI [7.03, 12.75], p < 0.01). Vividness decreased immediately after the fatiguing exercise (6.35 %, 95 % CI [5.18, 7.51], p < 0.05), before rapidly returning to pre-fatigue values during recovery trials. The results challenge the hypothesis of an effect of acute fatigue elicited by a resistance exercise on MI ability, i.e. restricted to MI tasks focusing fatigued effectors. The beneficial effects of fatigue conditions on the psychometric and behavioral indexes of MI ability are discussed in the broader context of psychobiological fatigue models linking perceived exertion with the reallocation of attentional resources. The general perception of fatigue, rather than local muscle fatigue, appeared linked to the acute effects of resistance exercise on MI ability.

BACKGROUND: Tart cherry supplementation has been shown to enhance recovery from strenuous exercise due to its antioxidant properties. The majority of these studies used tart cherry juice, with a significant calorie content. The primary purpose of this study was to assess whether powdered tart cherry extract with minimal calorie content reduces oxidative stress and enhances recovery following intense resistance exercise. METHODS: Thirteen men (mean age: 26.2 ± 5.3 years; height: 184.3 ± 8.2 cm; weight: 92.9 ± 15.6 kg) performed a demanding resistance exercise protocol consisting of 6 sets of 10 repetitions of barbell back squat with 80% 1RM. The protocol was performed once following 7 days of 500 mg of tart cherry extract and once following placebo. Serum protein carbonyl (PC) content, creatine kinase activity (CK) and creatine kinase myocardial band content (CK-MB) were used to assess oxidative stress, skeletal and cardiac muscle damage respectively. Muscle soreness was assessed by visual analog scale. Physical performance was measured by countermovement jump power and handgrip dynamometer strength. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in PC in the placebo (PL) condition when compared to the Tart Cherry (TC) condition at Immediate Post (IP) (PL: 0.4 ± 0.3 vs. TC: - 0.4 ± 0.2 nmol∙mg- 1; p < 0.001), 1 h (PL: 0.3 ± 0.3 vs. TC: - 0.7 ± 0.3 nmol∙mg- 1; p < 0.001) and 24 h (PL: 0.1 ± 0.4 vs. TC: - 0.3 ± 0.5 nmol∙mg- 1; p = 0.010). There was a significant increase in CK activity in PL when compared to the TC at IP (PL: 491.1 ± 280 vs. TC: 296.3 ± 178 U∙L- 1; p = 0.008) and 3 h (PL: - 87 ± 123 vs. TC: 43.1 ± 105.3 U∙L- 1; p = 0.006). There was a significant (p = 0.003) increase in CKMB concentration in PL when compared to the TC (PL: 21.6 ± 12.4 vs. TC: - 0.3 ± 11.8 ng∙ml- 1; p = 0.006) at 1 h post. There was a significant increase in handgrip strength in TC when compared to PL (PL: - 2 ± 5.1 vs. TC: 1.7 ± 3 kg; p = 0.017) at 24 h post. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that tart cherry extract reduced oxidative stress and markers of muscle and cardiac damage following intense resistance exercise. This occurred along with a prevention of the decrease in handgrip strength seen following the intense exercise protocol, indicating a potential reduction in central fatigue. These benefits were seen with minimal energy intake.
