RESUMEN

In this study, the ultrasonic-microwave pretreatment was defined as a processing technology in the production of tribute citrus powder, and it could increase the flavonoid compounds in the processing fruit powder. A total of 183 upregulated metabolites and 280 downregulated metabolites were obtained by non-targeted metabolomics, and the differential metabolites was mainly involved in the pathways of flavonoid biosynthesis, flavone and flavonol biosynthesis. A total of 8 flavonoid differential metabolites were obtained including 5 upregulated metabolites (6"-O-acetylglycitin, scutellarin, isosakuranin, rutin, and robinin), and 3 downregulated metabolites (astragalin, luteolin, and (-)-catechin gallate) by flavonoids-targeted metabolomics. The 8 flavonoid differential metabolites participated in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathways, flavone and flavonol biosynthesis pathways, and isoflavonoid biosynthesis pathways. The results provide a reference for further understanding the relationship between food processing and food components, and also lay a basis for the development of food targeted-processing technologies.

Phytonutrients (PTN) namely saponins (SP) and condensed tannins (CT) have been demonstrated to assess the effect of rumen fermentation and methane mitigation. Phytonutrient pellet containing mangosteen, rambutan, and banana flower (MARABAC) and lemongrass including PTN, hence these plant-phytonutrients supplementation could be an alternative plant with a positive effect on rumen fermentation. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of supplementation of MARABAC and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) powder on in vitro fermentation modulation and the ability to mitigate methane production. The treatments were arranged according to a 3 × 3 Factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design. The two experimental factors consisted of MARABAC pellet levels (0%, 1%, and 2% of the total substrate) and lemongrass supplementation levels (0%, 1%, and 2% of the total substrate). The results of this study revealed that supplementation with MARABAC pellet and lemongrass powder significantly improved gas production kinetics (P < 0.01) and rumen fermentation end-products especially the propionate production (P < 0.01). While rumen methane production was subsequently reduced by both factors. Additionally, the in vitro dry matter degradability (IVDMD) and organic matter degradability (IVOMD) were greatly improved (P < 0.05) by the respective treatments. MARABAC pellet and lemongrass powder combination showed effective methane mitigation by enhancing rumen fermentation end-products especially the propionate concentration and both the IVDMD and IVOMD, while mitigated methane production. The combined level of both sources at 2% MARABAC pellet and 2% lemongrass powder of total substrates offered the best results. Therefore, MARABAC pellet and lemongrass powder supplementation could be used as an alternative source of phytonutrient in dietary ruminant.

Sarcopenia is an age-related loss of muscle mass and function for which there is no approved pharmacological treatment. We tested direct efficacy by evaluating grip strength improvement in a sarcopenia mouse model rather than drug screening, which inhibits specific molecular mechanisms. Various physiological functions of ginseng berries are beneficial to the human body. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of steamed ginseng berry powder (SGBP). SGBP administration increased myotube diameter and suppressed the mRNA expression of sarcopenia-inducing molecules. SGBP also reduced the levels of inflammatory transcription factors and cytokines that are known to induce sarcopenia. Oral administration of SGBP improved muscle mass and physical performance in a mouse model of sarcopenia. In summary, our data suggest that SGBP is a novel therapeutic candidate for the amelioration of muscle weakness, including sarcopenia.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Chaihu Shugan Powder (CHSGP) has significant clinical efficacy in the treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD), but the specific mechanism requires further study. AIM OF STUDY: The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of CHSGP on FD rats and the underlying mechanism of the effect on interstitial cells of cajal (ICC) mitophagy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The tail-clamping stimulation method was utilized to establish an FD rat model in vivo. Gastric emptying rate and small intestinal propulsion rate test, H&E staining, and Immunohistochemistry were conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effects of CHSGP on FD rats. In vitro, the regulatory effect of CHSGP on CCCP-mediated ICC mitophagy was further investigated by CCK8, Transmission electron microscope, immunofluorescence co-staining, Quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blot to reveal the potential mechanisms of CHSGP inhibited ICC mitophagy. RESULTS: Animal experiments provided evidence that CHSGP promoted gastric motility, increased ICC numbers, reduced Parkin expression, and elevated USP30 expression in FD rats. In vitro, further mechanism research demonstrated that CHSGP decreased LC3Ⅱ/LC3Ⅰ、PINK1、Parkin、PHB2 protein expression and increased USP30 protein expression. Furthermore, CHSGP increased Mfn2 protein expression by suppressing activation of the PINK1/Parkin pathway when USP30 is knocked down, consequently reducing CCCP-induced ICC mitophagy. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that CHSGP may treat FD against CCCP-induced ICC mitophagy by the up-regulation of via PINK1/Parkin pathway.

Brain damage caused by ethanol abuse may lead to permanent damage, including severe dementia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ginger powder on ethanol-induced cognitive disorders by examining oxidative damage and inflammation status, and the gene expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A receptors in the hippocampus of male rats. 24 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated randomly to four groups as follows control, ethanol (4g/kg/day, by gavage), ginger (1g/kg/day, by gavage), and ginger-ethanol. At the end of the study, memory and learning were evaluated by the shuttle box test. Moreover, to explore mechanisms involved in ethanol-induced cognitive impairment and the protective effect of ginger, the expression of Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), NMDA receptor, and GABA-A receptor was measured along with inflammatory and oxidative biomarkers in the hippocampus tissue. The results showed that ethanol could induce cognitive impairment in the ethanol group, while pretreatment with ginger could reverse it. The gene expression of the NF-κB/ Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α/Interleukin (IL)-1ß pathway and NMDA and GABA-A receptors significantly increased in the ethanol group compared to the control group. While pretreatment with ginger could significantly improve ethanol-induced cognitive impairment through these pathways in the ginger-ethanol group compared to the ethanol group (P < 0.05). It can be concluded that ginger powder could ameliorate ethanol-induced cognitive impairment by modulating the expression of NMDA and GABA-A receptors and inhibiting oxidative damage and the NF-κB/TNF-α/IL-1ß pathway in the rat hippocampus.

The most frequent adverse effects of AFB1 in chicken are low performance, the depression of the immune system, and a reduced quality of both eggs and meat, leading to economic losses. Since oxidative stress plays a major role in AFB1 toxicity, natural products are increasingly being used as an alternative to mineral binders to tackle AFB1 toxicosis in farm animals. In this study, an in vivo trial was performed by exposing broilers for 10 days to AFB1 at dietary concentrations approaching the maximum limits set by the EU (0.02 mg/kg feed) in the presence or absence of turmeric powder (TP) (included in the feed at 400 mg/kg). The aims were to evaluate (i) the effects of AFB1 on lipid peroxidation, antioxidant parameters, histology, and the expression of drug transporters and biotransformation enzymes in the liver; (ii) the hepatic accumulation of AFB1 and its main metabolites (assessed using an in-house-validated HPLC-FLD method); (iii) the possible modulation of the above parameters elicited by TP. Broilers exposed to AFB1 alone displayed a significant increase in lipid peroxidation in the liver, which was completely reverted by the concomitant administration of TP. Although no changes in glutathione levels and antioxidant enzyme activities were detected in any treatment group, AFB1 significantly upregulated and downregulated the mRNA expression of CYP2A6 and Nrf2, respectively. TP counteracted such negative effects and increased the hepatic gene expression of selected antioxidant enzymes (i.e., CAT and SOD2) and drug transporters (i.e., ABCG2), which were further enhanced in combination with AFB1. Moreover, both AFB1 and TP increased the mRNA levels of ABCC2 and ABCG2 in the duodenum. The latter changes might be implicated in the decrease in hepatic AFB1 to undetectable levels (

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease in middle-aged and elderly people. In particular, increasing evidence has showed that astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of PD. As a precious traditional Chinese medicine, bear bile powder (BBP) has a long history of use in clinical practice. It has numerous activities, such as clearing heat, calming the liver wind and anti-inflammation, and also exhibits good therapeutic effect on convulsive epilepsy. However, whether BBP can prevent the development of PD has not been elucidated. Hence, this study was designed to explore the effect and mechanism of BBP on suppressing astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammation in a mouse model of PD. PD-like behavior was induced in the mice by intraperitoneal injection of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) (30 mg·kg-1) for five days, followed by BBP (50, 100, and 200 mg·kg-1) treatment daily for ten days. LPS stimulated rat C6 astrocytic cells were used as a cell model of neuroinflammation. THe results indicated that BBP treatment significantly ameliorated dyskinesia, increased the levels of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and inhibited astrocyte hyperactivation in the substantia nigra (SN) of PD mice. Furthermore, BBP decreased the protein levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and up-regulated the protein levels of takeda G protein-coupled receptor 5 (TGR5) in the SN. Moreover, BBP significantly activated TGR5 in a dose-dependent manner, and decreased the protein levels of GFAP, iNOS and COX2, as well as the mRNA levels of GFAP, iNOS, COX2, interleukin (IL) -1ß, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in LPS-stimulated C6 cells. Notably, BBP suppressed the phosphorylation of protein kinase B (AKT), inhibitor of NF-κB (IκBα) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) proteins in vivo and in vitro. We also observed that TGR5 inhibitor triamterene attenuated the anti-neuroinflammatory effect of BBP on LPS-stimulated C6 cells. Taken together, BBP alleviates the progression of PD mice by suppressing astrocyte-mediated inflammation via TGR5.

Jing-Fang powder ethyl acetate extract (JFEE) and its isolated C (JFEE-C) possess favorable anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties; however, their inhibitory effects on T cell activity remain unknown. In vitro, Jurkat T cells and primary mouse CD4+ T cells were used to explore the regulatory effects of JFEE and JFEE-C as well as their potential mechanisms on activated T cells. Furthermore, T cell-mediated atopic dermatitis (AD) mouse model was established to confirm these inhibitory effects in vivo. The results showed that JFEE and JFEE-C inhibited T cell activation by suppressing the production of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) without showing cytotoxicity. Flow cytometry showed the inhibitory effects of JFEE and JFEE-C on the activation-induced proliferation and apoptosis of T cells. Pretreatment with JFEE and JFEE-C also decreased the expression levels of several surface molecules, including CD69, CD25, and CD40L. Moreover, it was confirmed that JFEE and JFEE-C inhibited T cell activation by downregulating the TGF-ß-activated kinase 1 (TAK1)/nuclear kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB)/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways. The combination of these extracts with C25-140 intensified the inhibitory effects on IL-2 production and p65 phosphorylation. The oral administration of JFEE and JFEE-C notably weakened AD manifestations, including the infiltration of mast cells and CD4+ cells, epidermis and dermis thicknesses, serum levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), and gene expression levels of T helper (Th) cells-related cytokines in vivo. The underlying mechanisms of the inhibitory effects of JFEE and JFEE-C on AD were related to attenuating T cell activity through NF-κB/MAPK pathways. In conclusion, this study suggested that JFEE and JFEE-C exhibited anti-atopic efficacy by attenuating T cell activity and might possess a curative potential for T cell-mediated diseases.

BACKGROUND: Complex interactions that occur among starch, protein, and fat during food processing affect the taste, texture, and digestibility of starch-based food. The physicochemical properties of starch, in particular its slow digestibility, are greatly influenced by processing techniques such as extrusion and roller-drying. This study investigated the effects of various food ingredients and additives on the digestion properties of maize starch treated with extrusion and roller drying. It designed a nutritional formula to develop low glycemic index products. RESULTS: The extruded group containing raw maize starch, soybean protein isolate, soybean oil, lecithin and microcrystalline cellulose in the ratio of 580:250:58:20:3 had the best slow digestion properties. Nutritional formulas were designed at the above ratio, with supplements including calcium casein peptide, multi-vitamins, sodium ascorbate, fructooligosaccharides, xylitol, and peanut meal. The sample containing 10% peanut meal and a 1:3 ratio of fructooligosaccharides and xylitol additions obtained the highest sensory evaluation scores. An obvious slow digestion effect was observed in samples produced from the optimal formula. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study could contribute to the development and production of a low glycemic index, nutritional powder. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

In the present study, we evaluated the antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant effects of garlic and dill in comparison with atorvastatin to combat lipogenesis in broiler chickens. A total of 400 1-day-old chicks (Ross 308 strain) were randomly distributed into four experimental diets. Dietary treatments included a control diet, the control diet plus atorvastatin at 20 mg/kg, the control diet plus garlic dry powder (GDP) at 7.5 g/kg, and the control diet plus dill dry powder (DDP) at 7.5 g/kg. Chicks were maintained on experimental diets for 42 days under the recommended environmental conditions set out by the strain management manual. The results showed that weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and duodenal, jejunal, and ileal dimensions of villi (height, width, and the surface absorptive area) were improved by in-feed atorvastatin, GDP, or DDP when compared to the control (P < 0.05). The inclusion of atorvastatin or phytobiotic products increased circulatory levels of nitric oxide (NO) but decreased circulatory levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), triacylglycerol (TAG), and low-density lipoproteins cholesterol (LDL), with concomitant reductions in the T, R, and S waves amplitudes in the Lead 2 electrocardiogram (ECG) (P < 0.05). Dietary supplements caused an up-regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) but reduced the expression of key hepatic lipogenic enzymes (fatty acid synthase (FAS) and hydroxy-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) (P < 0.05). In conclusion, feed supplementation with atorvastatin, GDP, or DDP suppressed lipogenesis, enhanced antioxidant response, and improved gut and cardio-pulmonary function in broiler chicks subjected to hypobaric hypoxia.

Goishi tea is a unique Japanese post-fermented tea produced in Kochi prefecture. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the supplementation of energy-restricted diet with Goishi tea leaves affects body weight, visceral fat accumulation, and fecal lipids in diet-induced obese rats. 18 male Wistar rats were fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks. Subsequently, the diet-induced obese rats were fed a low-energy diet containing 1% (G1 group) or 3% (G3 group) of Goishi tea leaf powder, or without any tea extracts (C group) for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, body weight and body fat ratio were significantly lower in the G3 group than in the C group. Plasma insulin levels were significantly higher in the C group than in the G1 and G3 groups, whereas plasma leptin levels were significantly lower in the G3 group than in the C group. In addition, the lipid absorption rate was significantly lower in the G3 group than in the C and G1 groups. In conclusion, the administration of Goishi tea leaves under dietary restrictions might contribute to body weight reduction and inhibition of lipid absorption, as a diet therapy to help prevent obesity and metabolic syndrome. The pathogenesis of recurrent oral ulcers (ROU) is complex, with a long duration of illness and challenging to cure. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM),"heat accumulation in the heart-spleen" is one of the main causative factors. Jiaweidaochi powder (JWDCP) is based on the ancient Chinese medicine formula JWDCS, with the addition of Tongcao and gypsum and the removal of Mu Tong. It is generally used to treat "heat accumulation in the heart-spleen." Previous studies have demonstrated that it effectively reduces recurrence rates and is anti-inflammatory in modulating immunity. The ROU rats' model for JWDCP intervention treatment had been established, and histological tests revealed that JWDCP has a therapeutic effect on the pathological changes in the oral mucosa. In addition, the methylation levels of peripheral blood IFNG gene were detected by bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSP), and the methylation levels of the IFNG promoter region in the model group and each dose group were lower than those in the control group. However, no significant methylation differences were observed. Furthermore, the results of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and RNA quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that JWDCP could reduce IFN-γ and IL-4 protein concentrations, with high GATA-3 mRNA production, T-bet mRNAproduction was upgraded, elevated IL-4 mRNA levels, and reduced IFN-γ mRNA levels after treatment (P < 0.001). The expression of transcription factor T-betmRNA and GATA-3 gene mRNA was accompanied by changes in IFN-γmRNA and IL-4mRNA, demonstrating that Th2 type differentiation in RAS suppresses the body's immunity and that the imbalance of transcription factor expression further leads to Th1/Th2 drift. JWDCP is likely to reduce the protein concentration by regulating the imbalance of transcription factors and enhancing antioxidant capacity, thus achieving therapeutic effects. Treatment of recurrent oral ulcer models is not sufficient to reset IFNG methylation levels, correlating with the refractoriness of ROU, further confirming the complexity of epigenetic mechanisms and that epigenetic alterations in specific mediators may persist locally.

Background and Purpose: Atherosclerosis is the main pathophysiological foundation of cardiovascular disease, which was caused by inflammation and lipid metabolism disorder, along with vascular calcification. Aortic calcification leads to reduced plaque stability and eventually causes plaque rupture which leads to cardiovascular events. Presently, the drug to treat aortic calcification remains not to be available. Ganoderma lucidum spore powder (GLSP) is from Ganoderma lucidum which is a Traditional Chinese Medicine with the homology of medicine and food. It has multiple pharmacological effects, but no research on aortic calcification during atherosclerosis was performed. This study investigated the effects of GLSP on atherosclerosis and aortic calcification and revealed the underlying mechanism. Methods: In vivo, 8-week-aged male LDLR-/- mice were fed a high-fat diet to induce atherosclerosis along with aortic calcification. Simultaneously, the mice were treated with GLSP at the first week of HFD feeding to determine the protection against early and advanced atherosclerosis. Subsequently, the mice tissues were collected to evaluate the effects of GLSP on atherosclerosis, and aortic calcification, and to reveal the underlying mechanism. In vitro, we determined the major components of GLSP triterpenes by HPLC, and subsequently assessed the protective effects of these main active components on lipid metabolism, inflammation, and calcification in RAW264.7 and HASMC cells. Results: We observed GLSP attenuated plaque area and aortic calcification in the mice with early and advanced atherosclerosis. GLSP reduced the number of foam cells by improving ABCA1/G1-mediated cholesterol efflux in macrophages. In addition, GLSP protected against the aortic endothelium activation. Moreover, GLSP inhibited aortic calcification by inactivating RUNX2-mediated osteogenesis in HASMCs. Furthermore, we determined the major components of GLSP triterpenes, including Ganoderic acid A, Ganoderic acid B, Ganoderic acid C6, Ganoderic acid G, and Ganodermanontriol, and found that these triterpenes promoted ABCA1/G1-mediated cholesterol efflux and inhibited inflammation in macrophage, and inactivated RUNX2-mediated osteogenesis in VSMC. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that GLSP attenuates atherosclerosis and aortic calcification by improving ABCA1/G1-mediated cholesterol efflux and inactivating RUNX2-mediated osteogenesis in LDLR-/- mice. GLSP may be a potential drug candidate for the treatment of atherosclerosis and vascular calcification.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of diabetes with plant ingredients such as in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an alternative to classical chemotherapy. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the hypoglycemic effect of Trichosanthes pericarpium powder (TP) and intestinal bacteria transplantation in type 2 diabetic mice. The relationship between intestinal bacteria transplantation and improvement in insulin resistance was also investigated. METHODS: The polyphenols and terpenoids in the TP were identified by LC-MS/MS. Streptozotocin was used to induce a mouse model of type 2 diabetes. Diabetic mice were treated with different doses of TP and the intestinal bacteria obtained from the high-dose TP group for four weeks. RESULTS: As a result, FBG levels were found to be significantly reduced in diabetic mice, weight gain and organ enlargement were alleviated, and insulin resistance was significantly improved. TP administration also improved the disorder in intestinal bacteria in diabetic mice. Besides, TP can increase the liver AMPK, SIRT1, GLUT1, and GLUT4 gene expression, while down-regulated PEPCK and G6Pase gene expression suggest a potential mechanism for hypoglycemia in diabetic mice. CONCLUSION: Oral administration of Trichosanthes pericarpium powder in the treatment of diabetes may be achieved by restoring hepatic function, improving insulin resistance, and the dynamic balance of intestinal bacteria.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Yuanzhi Powder (YZP), a classical Chinese medicine formula, is good at tonifying heart-Qi and improving cognitive ability. YZP has been reported to show therapeutic effect on alleviating the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was conducted to observe the effects of YZP on improving the cognitive abilities of SAMP8 mice, and explore the involved mechanisms on inhibiting the excessive accumulation of phosphorylated tau. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty SAMP8 mice were randomly divided into five groups: AD group, AD + DO group, AD + YZP group, AD + LAC group and AD + LAC + YZP group. Age-matched SAMR1 mice were served as CTL group. AD + LAC group and AD + LAC + YZP group received 1 µg Lactacystin solution via intra-cerebroventricular injection. All mice (except the CTL group and AD + LAC group) were intragastrically administrated for 8 consecutive weeks. Then, the Morris Water Maze (MWM) test was conducted for evaluation of learning and memory abilities. The pathological changes of hippocampal CA1 were observed by Hematoxylin & eosin (H&E) staining. The expression of 26S proteasome in the hippocampus was measured by Western Blot (WB) and immunohistochemistry (IHC). The expressions of total tau (Tau5) and hyperphosphorylated tau (pS199, pT231 and pS396) were detected by WB. The aggregation of hyperphosphorylated tau and the binding ability of tau protein to microtubules were evaluated respectively by immunostaining and Thioflavin-S staining and double-label immunofluorescence. RESULTS: SAMP8 mice showed serious cognitive impairment in behavioral tests. However, treatment of YZP significantly ameliorated the cognitive deficits of SAMP8 mice. The H&E staining suggested that YZP could protect against neuronal loss in SAMP8 mice. The IHC and WB results showed that YZP increases 26S proteasome expression in SAMP8 mice and 26S proteasome expression was effectively inhibited by Lactacystin. Meanwhile, The WB results demonstrated that YZP can inhibit the expression of hyperphosphorylated tau (pT231, pS396 and pS199). Furthermore, the immunostaining and Thioflavin-S staining and double-label immunofluorescence results indicated that YZP attenuates the excessive aggregation of hyperphosphorylated tau and enhances the binding ability of tau to stabilize microtubules in SAMP8 mice. CONCLUSIONS: YZP could enhance cognitive performance and learning of AD, ameliorate tau pathology and significantly improve the binding ability of tau to microtubules, based potentially on inhibiting the excessive aggregation of hyperphosphorylated tau via the 26Sproteasome pathway but not necessarily the only one.

Insects have become essential models in studying human metabolic diseases, mainly due to their low maintenance cost and available tools. Both mutations and modified diets induce metabolic states similar to human obesity and diabetes. Here, we explore the effect of a high-calorie, high-fat diet on the metabolism of the beetle Tribolium castaneum. Supplementation of the wheat flour diet with powdered egg yolk for 3 weeks increased the total triacylglycerol and accelerated larval development. In addition, this diet increased the triacylglycerol levels of adult beetles. However, this egg yolk supplementation did not alter the larvae's total glucose levels or lipogenic capacity and ATP citrate lyase activity. The diet also did not change the expression profile of several lipid and carbohydrate metabolism genes and insulin-like peptides. Thus, we conclude that the diet supplemented with egg yolk induces increased fat without causing diabetes phenotypes, as seen in other hypercaloric diets in insects.

This study investigated the effect of different storage temperatures (35-55 °C) on the bioactive substances and antioxidant properties of Hyeronima macrocarpa berries loaded on nanocellulose. NC was extracted from banana pseudo-stems and presented an interesting surface and porosity properties. The acidified ethanol extract showed better anthocyanin extraction (1317 mg C3G eq./100 g FW) and was used for the preparation of the powdered product, which presented an intense and uniform magenta color, with CIELAB parameters of L* = 59.16, a* = 35.61, and b* = 7.08. The powder exhibited significant stability at storage temperatures of 35 and 45 °C, in which there was no significant loss of anthocyanins or a decrease in antioxidant capacity. In addition, the color was stable for up to 4 months without adding any preservative agent. The anthocyanin-rich extract of H. macrocarpa reached an estimated shelf-life of 315 days (stored at 35 °C), as a result of the impregnation process between the extract and NC, with the ability to protect the bioactives from degradation, due to NC surface properties.

In this study, the influence of a partial substitution of corn with carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) pulp powder on broiler performance, intestinal microbiota, carcass traits, and meat quality, was investigated. Two dietary treatments were compared: the control group received a diet containing basically corn, soybean meal, and wheat bran for all the breeding periods while the experimental group received the same starter diet as the control group and grower and finisher diets containing 3% and 7% of carob pulp powder, respectively. Growth performance (weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio), carcass traits, lactic acid bacteria, and total coliforms were determined. Physicochemical parameters, proximate composition, fatty acid profiles, lipid oxidation index, and sensory characteristics of broiler thigh and breast muscles were determined. Dietary supplementation with carob pulp powder did not show an effect (P > 0.05) on growth performance and carcass traits except for slaughter yield and breast relative weight. An increase in sum lactic acid bacteria count and a decrease in total coliforms were observed in the experimental group. No effect (P > 0.05) of dietary carob was observed on pH, cooking losses, ash, mineral, and protein contents in breast and thigh muscles from broilers. However, the experimental diet decreased (P < 0.05) moisture and fat contents in thigh muscles but not in breast muscles. Both muscles from the experimental group of birds exhibited lower palmitic and oleic acids contents, and higher linoleic and linolenic acids levels than those from the control group. Whereas the polyunsaturated fatty acid contents in broiler breast and thigh meat was increased by dietary carob, the concentration of lipid oxidation products decreased in this group. The dietary intervention had no significant effect on the sensory profile of breast and thigh muscles. Thus, carob pulp powder can be applied to broiler diet at 7% as a nonconventional feed with no negative impact on growth performance and carcass traits and to increase the degree of unsaturation with no negative impact on oxidative stability or sensory traits.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the effects of mate tea [Ilex paraguariensis] on the redox state and biochemical parameters of salivary glands in diabetic male rats. DESIGN: Twenty-four male Wistar rats (3 months old) were randomly divided into groups (n = 8 per group): control rats that received water (C); diabetic rats that received water (D); diabetic rats treated with mate tea (DMT). The treated streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were given mate tea powder by intragastric gavage at a dose of 20 mg/kg daily for 28 days. Content of total protein, amylase, oxidative lipid damage, measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), oxidative protein damage, measured as protein carbonyl, total antioxidant capacity, uric acid, reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were examined by the spectrophotometric method in the parotid and submandibular glands. RESULTS: The D group showed lower total protein, amylase, TBARs, protein carbonyl, total antioxidant capacity, GSH, uric acid, and GPx than the C group in both salivary glands, as well as higher SOD and CAT activities. The DMT group showed higher total protein, amylase, total antioxidant capacity, GSH, uric acid, and GPx than the D group in both salivary glands. Moreover, mate tea increased SOD in the parotid gland and CAT in the submandibular gland of diabetic rats but did not influence TBARs and protein carbonyl in either salivary gland compared to D group. CONCLUSION: Mate tea increased tissue protein synthesis and improved antioxidant defenses in the salivary glands of streptozotocin-induced diabetic male rats.

Brewer's spent yeast (BSY) Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been explored as a bio-vehicle for the encapsulation of bioactive compounds and as a delivery system. The main objectives of this work were to encapsulate carotenoids from pumpkin peel extract using BSY as an encapsulating agent and to evaluate the influence of ultrasound treatment on the carotenoid incorporation, stability and release. The powders produced by atomization of the suspension of BSY in the extract from pumpkin peels showed physical and microbiological stability during storage, presenting low values of water activity (<0.406), moisture content (<7.0%) and hygroscopicity (<6.8 g per 100 g), characteristics of greatest importance for powder formulations. Regarding the chemical stability of the incorporated carotenoids, there was a decline in carotenoid content in the first 30 days (p ≤ 0.01), although stabilization was achieved up to the 75th day. The best retention of carotenoids (273.3 µg g-1 of particles) was obtained by applying ultrasound treatment before atomization, which probably led to the adsorption of carotenoids onto yeasts. Ultrasound also showed a positive effect on the color protection of powders during storage and on the protection of compounds under simulated gastrointestinal digestion. BSY released the carotenoids gradually during the digestion and higher carotenoid release occurred in the intestinal phase with bioaccessibility values of 26.9 and 30.3%. Yeasts are a suitable carrier material and show promising characteristics for technological application.
