RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Inadequate trunk function is the underlying cause of many problems such as impaired balance and mobility. Although there have been trunk-based physiotherapy approaches in recent years, almost all of these approaches focus on motor problems. This study aims to investigate the effects of sensory training combined with trunk-centered Bobath exercises on trunk control and proprioception, balance, gait, and the activity of daily living (ADL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a randomized controlled trial included with twenty-seven stroke patients. Participants were separated into two groups, Group 1; 'sensory training combined with trunk-centered Bobath exercises' and Group 2; 'trunk-centered Bobath exercises'. Trunk-centered Bobath exercises were used for motor training. Sensory training included transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation and a set of exercises that provide tactile and proprioceptive stimulation. Trunk Impairment Scale, Trunk Reposition Error, Berg Balance Scale, 2-minute walk test, and Barthel Index were used to assess trunk control, trunk proprioception, balance, gait, and ADL respectively. RESULTS: Intra-group analysis results showed that trunk control, trunk proprioception, balance, gait, and ADL improved in both groups after treatment (p < 0.05). The changes in the Trunk Reposition Error values of the participants in Group 1 before and after treatment was found to be significantly higher than Group 2 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicated that the application of trunk-centered motor training is effective in improving trunk proprioception and trunk control, balance, gait, and ADL in stroke patients. Also, sensory training combined with trunk-centered motor training was found more effective in improving trunk proprioception than solely motor training.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of cervical mobilization on joint position sense, balance and gait in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. METHODS: Sixteen MS patients received traditional rehabilitation and traditional rehabilitation+cervical mobilization treatments in different orders, 2 days a week for 4 weeks. For the cervical mobilization, joint traction and shifts with myofascial release techniques were applied. Joint position sense was evaluated from the bilateral knee and ankle joints with a digital goniometer, balanced with the Berg Balance Test (BBT), the Functional Reach Test, and gait with the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) and the Timed 25-Foot Walk Test. RESULTS: Improvements were determined in joint position sense, balance, gait with both treatment methods (p < 0.05). With the addition of cervical mobilization to traditional treatment, there was observed to be an increased effect carried over in knee joint position sense and BBT (p < 0.05). The BBT and DGI scores improved in the group applied with cervical mobilization following the washout period (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Cervical mobilization could be effective in improving joint position sense, balance and gait, and accelerated improvements in a short time. The application of cervical mobilization could be a supportive treatment method to improve position sense, balance and gait in patients with MS.

BACKGROUND: ː Early detection of loss of proprioception is essential to prevent injury and maintain professional work activities. However, although many different methods are present for wrist proprioception measurement, these methods' validity and reliability studies are quite limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare the validity and reliability of the goniometer, inclinometer, and joint position sense goniometer methods used in measuring wrist active joint position sense (AJPS). METHODS: ː Thirty-two volunteer healthy participants (64 wrists) between the ages of 19-31 (mean age:23,34 ± 3,84) were included in the study. Wrist AJPS was assessed with an isokinetic dynamometer as a reference standard in addition to an inclinometer, goniometer, and joint position sense goniometer (JPSG). Spearman's Correlation Coefficient was used for validity analysis, and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC3,1) was used to analyze test-retest reliability. RESULTS: ː It was found that the goniometer (p < 0.001, r = 0.529) is a moderately valid method to assess active wrist joint position sense. The JPSG (p < 0.001, r = 0.432) and inclinometer (p = 0.005, r = 0.350) have weak validity. According to the results of ICC3,1 analysis, the goniometer (p < 0.001, ICC3,1 = 0.422) and JPSG (p < 0.001, ICC3,1 = 0.369) were found to have poor reliability in assessing wrist AJPS, and the inclinometer (p = 0,183, ICC3,1 = 0,114) was not found as a reliable method. CONCLUSIONS: ː Our results suggest that the JPSG and inclinometer should not be used in the wrist active joint position sense evaluation because of weak validity and poor reliability. The goniometer can be used in clinics and academic research to evaluate wrist joint position sense if the rater lacks a reliable and valid measurement tool.

Understanding why falls during pregnancy occur at over 25% rate over gestation has clinical impacts on the health of pregnant individuals. Attention, proprioception, and perception of the environment are required to prevent trips and falls. This research aimed to understand how the changes to these neurocognitive processes control obstacle avoidance through gestation. Seventeen pregnant participants were tested five times in 6-week intervals. Participants walked an obstacle course (OC), and we analyzed the crossings over obstacles that were set to 10% of participants' body height. Participants also performed an attentional network test (ANT: performance of specific components of attention), an obstacle perception task (OP: ability to visually define an obstacle and translate that to a body posture), and a joint position sense task (JPS: ability to recognize and recreate a joint position from somatosensation). In the OC task, average leading and trailing foot crossing heights significantly reduced by 13% and 23% respectively, with no change in variation, between weeks 13 and 31 of pregnancy, indicating an increased risk of obstacle contact during this time. The variability in minimum leading foot distances from the obstacle was correlated with all three neurocognition tasks (ANT, OP, and JPS). Increased fall rates in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy may be driven by changes in attention, with additional contributions of joint position sense and environmental perception at various stages of gestation. The results imply that a holistic examination on an individual basis may be required to determine individual trip risk and appropriate safety modifications.

Data on the mechanism of kinesiology taping (KT) for providing mechanical support, facilitating or inhibiting muscles, and increasing functionality in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA) have been contradictory, with no study evaluating acute muscle activation. Our aim in this study was to determine the acute effect of KT applied to the rectus femoris muscle on this muscle's activation, functionality and proprioception in patients with knee osteoarthritis. We divided 40 individuals diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis into two groups: (a) KT group (taping with tension facilitation) and (b) a placebo group (taping with no tension facilitation). We applied taping to the participants' left and right side rectus femoris muscles for 30 minutes, but with muscle facilitation in the KT group and without tension in the placebo group. We assessed participants for muscle activation with surface electromyography (sEMG), for functionality with the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), and for proprioception/joint sense with the Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test (5TSTS) before and after taping. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the groups before these interventions were similar (p > .05). Muscle activation did not change significantly in either group compared to before taping (p > .05), but there were improvements in both knees for proprioception/joint sense (p < .05). Both groups were similar in terms of functionality (5TSTS, TUG) results (p > .05). We concluded that KT applied bilaterally to the rectus femoris did not affect rectus femoris muscle activation and functionality in patients with knee OA, but it did improve proprioception.

OBJECTIVE: Acupuncture or similar needling therapy has long been used to improve well-being, but its effectiveness in management of chronic ankle instability (CAI) is unclear. To investigate the efficacy of acupuncture or similar needling therapy on pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function in individuals with CAI. METHODS: Nine databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EBSCO, PEDro, CNKI, WanFang, and CQVIP) were systematically searched from inception to April 2023. This study included randomized controlled trials involving acupuncture or similar needling therapy as an intervention for individuals with CAI. Data were extracted independently by two assessors using a standardized form. Literature quality and risk bias were assessed by using the PEDro scale. RESULTS: Twelve trials (n = 571) were found, of which the final meta-analysis was conducted with eight. Different studies employ varying treatments, including specific needle types, techniques, and therapeutic frameworks. Compared to control without acupuncture or similar needling therapy, acupuncture or similar needling intervention resulted in improved pain (WMD 1.33, 95 % CI 0.14-2.52, I²=90 %, p = 0.03), proprioception (active joint position sense, WMD 1.71, 95 % CI 0.95-2.48, I²=0 %, p < 0.0001), balance (SMD 0.54, 95 % CI 0.03-1.04, I²=46 %, p = 0.04), and self-reported function (Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (WMD 2.92, 95 % CI 0.94-4.90, I²=78 %, p = 0.004); American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (WMD 9.36, 95 % CI 6.57-12.15, I²=0 %, p < 0.001); Foot and Ankle Ability Measure: activities of daily living (WMD 5.09, 95 % CI 1.74-8.44, I²=0 %, p = 0.003)) for individuals with CAI. CONCLUSIONS: The available evidence suggests that acupuncture or similar needling therapy may improve pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function in individuals with CAI, but more trials are needed to verify these findings. Furthermore, various needles and techniques using in different studies have resulted in methodologic limitations that should be addressed in the future.

The objective of this review was to offer new information on the effectiveness of Schroth method on postural control and balance in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). PubMed, EBSCO, and Google Scholar databases were searched from June 2022 to August 2022 for prospective controlled trials and randomized controlled trials related to effects of Schroth exercises on postural control and balance in patients with AIS. The key words AIS, Schroth, balance, postural control, and proprioception were used. Studies written in English language, in the last decade were included. Seven studies were included in the review, with a total of 244 study subjects. Three studies investigated the effectiveness of Schroth exercises on balance and postural control. Two studies included investigated the effectiveness of Schroth method in combination with additional treatments of bracing and hippotherapy, while two other studies investigated effectiveness of Schroth when compared with Pilates and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). The treatment duration varied from a week to 6 months. From the findings of this review, it is supported that Schroth method can have positive effects on balance and postural control in AIS patients. Further investigation is necessary.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of Mulligan's mobilization with movement (MWM) on elbow proprioception. METHODS: The study included 26 participants in the intervention group and 30 participants in the control group. The intervention group received MWM, while the control group received a sham application. Proprioception was assessed with joint position sense error at baseline, immediately after mobilization, and 30 minutes after mobilization with 70° and 110° of elbow flexion. The hypothesis of interest was the group × time interaction. RESULTS: At 110° of elbow flexion, group × time interaction was significant (F[2, 108] = 11.48, P = .001). In the paired comparisons, there was a statistically significant difference in favor of the control group in the first measurement (P = .003). No difference was detected in other time points (P = 1.00). At 70° of elbow flexion, there was no significant difference between the time point × group interaction (F[2, 108] = 1.37, P = .10). Therefore, no pairwise comparison was made. CONCLUSION: In this study of healthy participants, no immediate difference was found between MWM and sham application on elbow proprioception.

PURPOSE: Proprioception is a self-perceived sense of position and movement of one's body and its deficits can lead to motor control problems such as delayed muscle reflexes. Previous studies have confirmed lumbar proprioception impairments among individuals with Low Back Pain (LBP), which can afflict the normal central sensory-motor control and hence increases the risk of abnormal loading on the lumbar spine. Although the local investigation of proprioception is important, its influence on other joints in a kinetic chain particularly between extremities and spine should not be ignored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the proprioception of knee joint in different trunk positions among females with chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP) and healthy females. DESIGN: The study included 24 healthy subjects and 25 patients with CNSLBP participated in this study. Repositioning error of knee joint in four different lumbar positions including flexion, neutral position, 50% ROM of left rotation and 50% ROM right rotation was evaluated using an inclinometer. Absolute error and constant error were obtained and analyzed. RESULTS: Absolute error in flexion and neutral positions in the individuals with CNSLBP were significantly higher than in healthy individuals; whereas, there was no significant difference in absolute and constant error between the two groups in 50% rotation to either side. CONCLUSION: This study showed that knee joint repositioning accuracy was reduced in patients with CNSLBP compared to healthy ones.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the acute effects of Graston and myofascial release on thoracolumbar fascia (TLF) on lumbar range of motion (ROM), lumbar and cervical proprioception, and trunk muscle endurance in healthy young adults. METHOD: Twenty-four healthy young individuals were included in the study. Individuals were randomly divided into two groups as Graston technique (GT) (n = 12) and myofascial release (MFR) (n = 12). GT group received a fascial treatment with a graston instrument and the MFR group (n = 12) received manual myofascial treatment. Both techniques were applied for 10 min and as a single session. Lumbar ROM (goniometer), lumbar proprioception (digital inclinometer), cervical proprioception (CROM device), and trunk muscle endurance (with McGill Endurance Test) were evaluated before and after treatment. RESULTS: Age, gender and body mass index of individuals in both groups were similar (p > 0.05). In both GT and MFR groups, an increase in ROM in the flexion direction (p < 0.05) and a decrease in the angle of deviation in proprioception in the flexion direction were determined (p < 0.05). Neither technique had a significant effect on cervical proprioception and trunk muscle endurance (p > 0.05). In addition, no difference was found between the effectiveness of Graston and myofascial release (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study showed that Graston and myofascial release applied to TLF in healthy young adults effectively improve lumbar ROM and proprioception in the acute period. Considering these results, both Graston and myofascial release can be used to provide elasticity of TLF and improve proprioceptive return.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the early onset of rehabilitation on restoring the postural stability of patients after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) at the 3rd postoperative month. METHODS: Forty patients after ACLR and twenty healthy controls took part in the investigation. The patients were divided into two groups, depending on the start of their proprioceptive rehabilitation program: an experimental group - on the 5th day after the surgery and a control group - on around the 30th postoperative day. Postural stability was investigated by static posturographic tests on stable and foam surfaces with open and closed eyes. RESULTS: The patients from the experimental group showed lower amplitudes and velocities of the postural sways than the patients from the control group at the 3rd postoperative month. We found that the early start of the proprioceptive rehabilitation affects more the amplitude than the velocity of the postural sway which remains significantly high in both directions compared to the conventional rehabilitation. CONCLUSION: The early start of the rehabilitation has a beneficial role in the recovery of the postural stability in the 3rd postoperative month, especially in more challenging conditions for keeping the equilibrium, which contributes to the minimizes the risk of a second anterior cruciate ligament injury after patients' return to their usual sport and daily activities routine.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a common injury among athletes. Research has reported reduced dorsiflexion range of motion, impairment of proprioception, and decreased muscle strength of the ankle in people with CAI. The aim of this research was to examine the effects of 8-week core stability training on stable and unstable surfaces on ankle muscular strength, proprioception, and dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM) in athletes with CAI. METHODS: Thirty-six athletes with CAI (age 22.42 ± 2.76 years; height 169.11 ± 3.52 cm; weight 68.46 ± 2.75 kg) participated in this study. They were divided into three groups: unstable-surface group (UG) (n = 12), stable-surface group (SG) (n = 12), and control group (CG) (n = 12). The UG and SG performed the core stability exercise protocol for 8 weeks, 3 sessions per week. The CG received their usual care and daily activities. Outcomes were measured pre-sessions and post-sessions. RESULTS: The peak torque showed significant increases in the UG and SG compared with the CG during plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, inversion, and eversion (P < 0.05). There were also significant increases in UG compared with SG (P < 0.05). The proprioception showed significant decreases in UG compared with SG and CG (P < 0.05). The dorsiflexion ROM showed significant increases in UG and SG compared with CG. There were also significant increases in UG compared with SG (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It seems that core stability exercises on trampoline surface helps improve the measured parameters in athletes with ankle instability. Therefore, this type of training is recommended as a therapeutic option for Individuals with CAI.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder injuries are associated with proprioceptive deficits. Elastic kinesiology tape (KT) is used for treating musculoskeletal disorders, including shoulder injuries, as it arguably improves proprioception. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the evidence on the effects of elastic KT on proprioception in healthy and pathological shoulders. METHODS: Four databases (PubMed, WoS, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus) were searched for studies that investigated the effects of elastic KT on shoulder proprioception. Outcome measures were active joint position sense (AJPS), passive joint position sense (PJPS), kinesthesia, sense of force (SoF), and sense of velocity (SoV). Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration RoB tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and the ROBINS-1 for non-RCTs, while the certainty of evidence was determined using GRADE. RESULTS: Eight studies (5 RCTs, 3 non-RCTs) were included, yielding 187 shoulders (102 healthy and 85 pathological shoulders). RoB ranged from low (2 studies), moderate (5 studies), to high (1 study). Elastic KT has a mixed effect on AJPS of healthy shoulders (n=79) (low certainty). Elastic KT improves AJPS (subacromial pain syndrome and rotator cuff tendinopathy, n=52) and PJPS (chronic hemiparetic shoulders, n=13) among pathological shoulders (very low certainty). Elastic KT has no effect on kinesthesia among individuals with subacromial pain syndrome (n=30) (very low certainty). CONCLUSION: There is very low to low certainty of evidence that elastic KT enhances shoulder AJPS and PJPS. The aggregate of evidence is currently so low that any recommendation on the effectiveness of elastic KT on shoulder proprioception remains speculative.

Developing effective supplements and rehabilitation of the impaired tactile and proprioception sensation is a significant challenge. One potential method for improving these sensations in clinical practice is using stochastic resonance with white noise. While transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a simple method, the effect of subthreshold noise stimulation via TENS on sensory nerve thresholds is currently unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether subthreshold TENS can alter afferent nerve thresholds. The electric current perception thresholds (CPT) of A-beta, A-delta, and C fibers were assessed in 21 healthy volunteers during both subthreshold TENS and control conditions. Subthreshold TENS was found to have lower CPT values compared to the control condition for A-beta fibers. No significant differences were observed between subthreshold TENS and control for A-delta and C fibers. Our findings indicated that subthreshold TENS might selectively enhance the function of A-beta fibers.

Recent evidence suggests that imagined auditory and visual sensory stimuli can be integrated with real sensory information from a different sensory modality to change the perception of external events via cross-modal multisensory integration mechanisms. Here, we explored whether imagined voluntary movements can integrate visual and proprioceptive cues to change how we perceive our own limbs in space. Participants viewed a robotic hand wearing a glove repetitively moving its right index finger up and down at a frequency of 1 Hz, while they imagined executing the corresponding movements synchronously or asynchronously (kinesthetic-motor imagery); electromyography (EMG) from the participants' right index flexor muscle confirmed that the participants kept their hand relaxed while imagining the movements. The questionnaire results revealed that the synchronously imagined movements elicited illusory ownership and a sense of agency over the moving robotic hand-the moving rubber hand illusion-compared with asynchronously imagined movements; individuals who affirmed experiencing the illusion with real synchronous movement also did so with synchronous imagined movements. The results from a proprioceptive drift task further demonstrated a shift in the perceived location of the participants' real hand toward the robotic hand in the synchronous versus the asynchronous motor imagery condition. These results suggest that kinesthetic motor imagery can be used to replace veridical congruent somatosensory feedback from a moving finger in the moving rubber hand illusion to trigger illusory body ownership and agency, but only if the temporal congruence rule of the illusion is obeyed. This observation extends previous studies on the integration of mental imagery and sensory perception to the case of multisensory bodily awareness, which has potentially important implications for research into embodiment of brain-computer interface controlled robotic prostheses and computer-generated limbs in virtual reality.

Este artigo pretende conhecer como a rede de cuidados em saúde tem se operacionalizado a partir da percepção de familiares de crianças com demanda de cuidado em saúde mental (SM). Foram realizados dois grupos focais, um com familiares da Atenção Básica (AB) e outro com familiares do Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Infantojuvenil (CAPSij), totalizando 15 participantes. Seguiu-se com a análise lexical do tipo classificação hierárquica descendente, com o auxílio do software R Interface, a fim de análises multidimensionais de textos e questionários (IRaMuTeQ), resultando em cinco classes: A Pílula Mágica; Forças e Fraquezas dos serviços; Procurando por ajuda; Aceitando o diagnóstico da criança e Onde procurei ajuda. Os resultados apontam para dificuldades presentes na AB em identificar e manejar situações de Saúde Mental Infantojuvenil (SMIJ), por meio de uma lógica ainda medicalizante. Ressalta-se que a escola é apresentada como lugar de destaque na produção da demanda por cuidado e a família ainda é pouco convocada à construção das ações. Conclui-se, então, que avanços ainda são necessários para operacionalização de um cuidado pautado nas diretrizes da política de SMIJ.(AU)


This article aims to know how the healthcare network has been operationalized from the perception of family members of children with demand for mental health care (MH). Two focus groups were held, one with family members from Primary Care (PC) and the other with family members from the Child Psychosocial Care Center (CAPSij), totaling 15 participants. A lexical analysis of the descending hierarchical classification type was performed with the help of the software R Interface for multidimensional analyzes of texts and questionnaires (IRAMUTEQ), resulting in five classes: The Magic Pill; Strengths and Weaknesses of services; Looking for help; Accepting the child's diagnosis; and Where did I look for help. The results point to difficulties present in PC in identifying and managing situations of mental health in children and adolescents (MHCA), with a medicalization logic. Note that the school is presented as a prominent place in producing the demand for care, and the family is still not very much involved in the actions. It is, thus, concluded that advances are still needed for operationalization of care guided by MHCA policy guidelines.(AU)


Este artículo tuvo por objetivo conocer cómo opera una red asistencial a partir de la percepción de familiares de niños con demanda de atención en salud mental (SM). Se realizaron dos grupos focales, uno con familiares de Atención Primaria (AP) y otro con familiares del Centro de Atención Psicosocial Infantojuvenil (CAPSij), totalizando 15 participantes. Se realizó análisis léxico del tipo clasificación jerárquica descendente con la ayuda del software Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires (IRAMUTEQ), lo que resultó en cinco clases: "La píldora mágica"; "Fortalezas y debilidades de los servicios"; "En busca de ayuda"; "Aceptar el diagnóstico del niño" y "¿Dónde busqué ayuda?". Los resultados apuntan las dificultades presentes en AP para identificar y manejar situaciones de salud mental infantojuvenil (SMIJ) mediante una lógica aún medicalizante. La escuela tiene un lugar destacado en la producción de la demanda de cuidados y la familia aún no está muy involucrada en la construcción de acciones. Se concluye que se necesitan avances para ofertar una atención guiada por lineamientos de la política del SMIJ.(AU)

OBJECTIVES: Pelvic floor tendons, fascia, and ligaments are rich in proprioceptors. Proprioceptive training can stimulate local proprioceptors to increase neuromuscular responses and promote the recovery of muscle and fascial ligament functions. This study aims to observe the therapeutic effect of proprioception training combined with pelvic floor electrical stimulation biofeedback on postpartum pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD), and to provide evidence for the treatment of postpartum PFD. METHODS: A total of 108 puerpera with postpartum PFD were selected and divided into a control group ( n =50) and an experimental group ( n =58). Puerpera in the control group received pelvic floor electrical stimulation biofeedback treatment. Puerpera in the experimental group received proprioception training combined with pelvic floor electrical stimulation biofeedback treatment. After one course of treatment, the pelvic floor muscle strength, muscle endurance, repetitive contraction ability, rapid contraction ability, percentage of normal vaginal posterior wall elevation, percentage of normal lower abdominal muscle synergistic contraction, percentage of normal reflex contraction during coughing, incidence of stress urinary incontinence (SUI), and staging of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) were compared before and after treatment between the 2 groups. RESULTS: After treatment, all indexes of the 2 groups were better than those before treatment; the pelvic floor muscle strength, muscular endurance, repetitive contraction ability, and rapid contraction ability of the experimental group were better than those of the control group (all P <0.05); the percentage of normal lower abdominal muscle synergistic contraction and percentage of normal reflex contraction during coughing of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group (both P <0.05); the incidence of SUI in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group ( P <0.05); the percentage of POP staging II in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group ( P <0.05). There was no significant difference in the percentage of normal posterior vaginal wall elevation after treatment between the 2 groups ( P >0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Proprioception training combined with pelvic floor electrical stimulation biofeedback could improve the rehabilitation effect of postpartum pelvic floor dysfunction and promote the recovery of pelvic floor function, which possesses important clinical application value.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the reliability and, where possible, the validity of cervicocephalic proprioceptive (CCP) tests in healthy adults and clinical populations. METHODS: A systematic search, utilizing 7 databases from the earliest possible date to April 14, 2021, identified studies that measured reliability of CCP tests. Studies were screened for eligibility, and included studies were appraised using Quality Appraisal Tool for Studies of Diagnostic Reliability (QAREL) and Quality Assessment and Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 Tool (QUADAS-2) tools. Validity outcomes were assessed for included studies. RESULTS: Of 34 included studies, 29 investigated reliability for sense of position tests, 10 involved sense of movement tests, and 1 used a sense of force test. The head to neutral test was reliable and valid when 6 or more repetitions were performed within the test, discriminating between those with and without neck pain. Head tracking tests were reliable with 6 repetitions, and 1 study found discriminative validity in a whiplash population. Studies that found discriminative validity in sense of position reported mean joint position error generally >4.5° in the neck pain group and <4.5° in the asymptomatic group. No sense of force test was applied to a clinical population. Convergent validity analysis showed that these proprioceptive tests have low correlations with each other. CONCLUSION: The reliability and validity of CCP tests for sense of position and movement are dependent upon equipment and repetitions. Six repetitions are generally required for good reliability, and joint position error >4.5° is likely to indicate impairment in sense of position.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intra-rater between-days reliability of the joint position sense error (JPSE) test in asymptomatic men and women, as well as in women with neck pain. METHODS: Fourteen asymptomatic men and 27 women (14 asymptomatic and 13 with neck pain) participated. The JPSE test was performed during right and left cervical rotation (10 trials for each side) in 2 sessions, with at least 7 days between them. The head repositioning error during the JPSE test (in degrees) was measured and used to calculate the intra-rater between-days reliability of the test, evaluated through the intraclass correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman analyses. Independent t tests were calculated to compare the head repositioning errors of asymptomatic women and men. The minimal detectable change was also calculated. RESULTS: The neck pain group showed higher intraclass correlation coefficient values (0.866 and 0.773, good reliability) compared to the asymptomatic men (0.478 and 0.403, poor reliability) and to the asymptomatic women (-0.161 and 0.504, poor and moderate reliability, respectively) for both right and left cervical rotation, respectively. Considering Bland-Altman analyses, the neck pain group showed better agreement between the measurements for right cervical rotation than the asymptomatic groups. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that the methodology used to perform the JPSE test in this study may be a reliable way to assess the proprioception of women with neck pain in clinical settings.

Martial arts routines originated in China and are a traditional sport of the Chinese nation. They are one of the outstanding sports culture representatives in China since ancient times. Excessively difficult movements in some martial arts routines during competitions or training can cause athlete injuries. The purpose of this article is to study the effect of proprioceptive training of ankle joints on preventing ankle injuries in martial arts athletes. Can ankle strength training and ankle proprioceptive training combined with strength training improve the dynamic and static balance of football players? This article analyzes the mechanism and causes of martial arts athletes' injuries and proposes treatment methods for ankle injuries. In the experimental part of this article, 16 martial arts athletes (8 males and 8 females) were selected as research objects, and they were randomly divided into 4 male and female experimental groups and 4 control groups. The experimental group received ankle muscle strength training for 6 weeks, and the control group received ankle muscle strength training and ankle proprioception training. The experimental results prove that ankle proprioceptive training can improve the dynamic and static balance of martial arts athletes and can effectively prevent the occurrence of ankle injury. In this paper, the dynamic balance ability in the biped standing state with eyes closed was tested, and the reductions of the stability index in the front and back directions of the control group and the experimental group were 0.03 and 0.2, respectively. It can be seen that the stability training effect of the experimental group was obvious.
