RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Widespread use of the internet has fundamentally altered the way people access health information and communicate with health providers. Pregnant women are a group who are particularly highly motivated to seek out information online. However, where mothers actually obtain their information, who they trust to supply it, and whether or not it actually fulfils their needs is often unclear. This paper examines the experiences of women accessing advice and information on pregnancy and childbirth through a dedicated social-media platform, mediated by qualified midwives. The study formed part of a larger research project that focussed on professionally moderated online learning in maternity care, and the role of online communities. This paper reports on aspects of midwife mediated information provision in the context of these online communities. METHODS: Two secret (i.e. private / invitation only) Facebook groups were created. Both groups were moderated by 2 qualified midwives. One group had 17 mothers and the other 14 mothers. Both groups ran for 35 weeks. DATA AND ANALYSIS: The data included the written and spoken words of group participants and midwife-moderators in i) face-to-face (n = 4) and online (n = 4) post-intervention focus groups; ii) one-to-one interviews with group participants and midwife moderators (n = 24); iii) the complete corpus of text-based interaction across both groups; iv) a sub-set of private message sessions (n = 24) between individual participants and midwife-moderators. Thematic analysis was applied to the combined dataset. FINDINGS: Participants found engagement with midwives and other pregnant women via a social media group convenient and accessible. The groups provided a safe space for the sharing and validation of maternity relevant information. Members trusted their midwife-moderators to ensure information was reliable. For many members, the group became the primary source of pregnancy related information. CONCLUSION: Midwife-mediated social media groups offer a highly effective way of providing individualised information provision and social support for pregnant woman. Access to a group can also significantly impact on perceptions of relational continuity.

Objective: The growing use of purchase online via Internet retailers favours the access to potentially toxic natural products. It also contributes to the quick dissemination of the claims made by the retailers on efficacy and safety, these claims being not always based upon reliable information. Here, we have conducted an online search to find Spanish-language retail websites for Chinese herbal medicine and we have analysed them for the quality of product information and the potential health risks. Methods: I) Online search in Google España to find Spanish-language retail websites for Chinese herbal medicine in which we analysed both the claims regarding possible health benefits and adequate safe use indications II) Identification of potentially toxic herbs in the websites III) Quantification of Chinese herbal medicines withdrawn by the Agencia Española de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios (AEMPS). Results: 1) Only one third of the 30 Spanish-language retail websites found which sell Chinese herbal medicine observe the law, given that the other websites include illegal Western disease claims as marketing tools, 2) Five websites provide some safety information, 3) Two websites offer potentially toxic herbs and 4) Chinese herbal medicine adulterated with sibutramine, silfenafil or their analogues make a considerable percentage of the total products withdrawn by the AEMPS. Conclusion: Online health seekers should be warned about misinformation on retail websites for Chinese herbal medicine and directed to a Spanish government Web site for guidance in safely navigating the Internet for buying Chinese herbal medicine (AU)

RESUMEN

The explosion in the immuno-oncology field, exemplified by the clinical implementation of immune checkpoint inhibitor blockade and other immunotherapeutic strategies was quickly recognized by the Italian biomedical community, thanks to the networking activities of the Italian Network for Tumor Biotherapy (NIBIT), which has been active since 2004 in the diffusion of new scientific and clinical findings in the fields of tumor immunology and immunotherapy. Numerous activities of NIBIT have also helped to overcome the hurdles associated with the clinical implementation of cancer immune-biotherapeutic strategies at the national and international levels. Looking forward, a concerted interaction of NIBIT with existing European networks focused on cancer bio-immunotherapy will further contribute to the development of improved therapies in the immuno-oncology field. This Introduction briefly summarizes the history and objectives of NIBIT, as well as the current activities of the Network.

RESUMEN

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) developed the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) to monitor population trends in cancer communication practices, information preferences, health risk behaviors, attitudes, and cancer knowledge. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognized HINTS as a unique data resource for informing its health communication endeavors and partnered with NCI to field HINTS-FDA 2015. HINTS-FDA 2015 was a self-administered paper instrument sent by mail May 29 to September 8, 2015, using a random probability-based sample of U.S. postal addresses stratified by county-level smoking rates, with an oversampling of high and medium-high smoking strata to increase the yield of current smokers responding to the survey. The response rate for HINTS-FDA 2015 was 33% (N = 3,738). The yield of current smokers (n = 495) was lower than expected, but the sampling strategy achieved the goal of obtaining more former smokers (n = 1,132). Public-use HINTS-FDA 2015 data and supporting documentation have been available for download and secondary data analyses since June 2016 at http://hints.cancer.gov . NCI and FDA encourage the use of HINTS-FDA for health communication research and practice related to tobacco-related communications, public knowledge, and behaviors as well as beliefs and actions related to medical products and dietary supplements.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: MotherToBaby Utah is a teratogen information service that provides support for pregnant and breastfeeding women and healthcare providers regarding risks of exposures to medications, infections, herbals, homeopathic and dietary medications, chemicals and other substances. Calls are anonymous and free of charge. This study was undertaken to examine the volume and classification of calls regarding exposures during pregnancy and breastfeeding. METHODS: Data were extracted from calls requesting information about medication use and other exposures to pregnant and breastfeeding women, between January 1 2009 and December 31 2012. Descriptive statistics were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 27,299 calls regarding 46,031 exposures were identified in this study population. The majority of calls were made by the exposed individual (82.1 %); 13.0 % were made by a healthcare provider and 4.9 % were made by a family member or acquaintance. The majority of calls concerned pregnancy (65.8 %) versus breastfeeding (34.2 %). Exposure during the current pregnancy was the subject of 88.6 % of calls. For calls where trimester information was available, the percentage of calls for first, second and third trimesters were 44.1, 32.5 and 23.4 %, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study found analgesics, cold medications, herbals, homeopathic, and dietary medications were of the topic of concern for the majority of the calls regarding exposure during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding. Teratogen information services gather and provide important educational resources for both patients and healthcare providers. As the majority of calls concern nonprescription drugs and vaccines, these data provide insight into a lack of education on these subjects that should be addressed during prenatal care.

INTRODUCTION.- The objective has been to reflect the degree of satisfaction shown by the patient with the information received when starting a new treatment. It was based on the type of information and the level of training of the person who provides the information. METHODOLOGY.- Cross-sectional study, carried out in 10 community pharmacies of Albacete and Jaén from the 1st of April to the 31st of May 2009. Patients or their carers completed a survey about satisfaction for each one of the new medicines prescribed. Data obtained was analyzed with SPSS. RESULTS.- 318 valid surveys were collected. In 76,7% of the cases, patients stated to be satisfied with the information received. The level of satisfaction was higher when information was given hand written to the patient in comparison with verbal or computerized written. More over a significant increase of satisfaction was seen when written information was accompanied by verbal one. Satisfaction was greater in acute treatments than in chronic treatments and also when information was given by a consultant. However this difference was found not to be statiscally significant. DISCUSION.- When only computerized written information is supplied, nearly half of the patients are not satisfied and only one third of them understand everything about the new treatment. These findings are very significant for us due to the high number of computerized prescriptions we have to deal within our pharmacies(AU)

RESUMEN

Opinions about the therapeutic efficacy of medicinal herbs differ significantly. Some reported herbal efficacies at low doses of active ingredients suggest a need for investigating whether these are because of placebo or multi-ingredient synergistic effects. This review discusses the opinions, methods and outcomes of herbal synergism investigations and analyzes indications from 48 in vivo tests and 106 rigorous clinical trials. Analyses of ingredient-mediated interactions at molecular and pathway levels indicate multi-ingredient synergism in 27 of the 39 reported cases of herbal synergism with available ingredient information. Synergistic actions may be responsible for the therapeutic efficacy of a substantial number of herbal products and their mechanisms may be studied by analyzing ingredient-mediated molecular interactions and network regulation.

RESUMEN

Individual belief and knowledge about cancer were shown to influence coping and compliance of patients. Supposing that the Internet information both has impact on patients and reflects patients' information needs, breast cancer web sites in English and German language were evaluated to assess the information quality and were compared with each other to identify intercultural differences. Search engines returned 10 616 hits related to breast cancer. Of these, 4590 relevant hits were analysed. In all, 1888 web pages belonged to 132 English-language web sites and 2702 to 65 German-language web sites. Results showed that palliative therapy (4.5 vs 16.7%; P=0.004), alternative medicine (18.2 vs 46.2%; P<0.001), and disease-related information (prognosis, cancer aftercare, self-help groups, and epidemiology) were significantly more often found on German-language web sites. Therapy-related information (including the side effects of therapy and new studies) was significantly more often given by English-language web sites: for example, details about surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, immune therapy, and stem cell transplantation. In conclusion, our results have implications for patient education by physicians and may help to improve patient support by tailoring information, considering the weak points in information provision by web sites and intercultural differences in patient needs.

RESUMEN

Use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is growing in the United States. Children are a part of this trend, with adolescent self-care exceeding adult use. As a result, the necessity of educating pediatricians on CAM practices has become clear. This paper describes the Pediatric Integrative Medicine Education (PIME) project with a focus on the creation of HolisticKids.org, a Website designed to educate pediatric residents. HolisticKids.org also addresses the needs and interests of medical students, fellows, faculty, and community-based care providers who work with children and CAM. An outstanding aspect of this effort is its interdisciplinary nature, involving physicians, pharmacists, dieticians, nurses, medical librarians, and Web specialists. Collaboration is mirrored on an institutional level, where the participating institutions include Children's Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School, Boston Medical Center, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Now in the third year of development, this Web-based education project demonstrates how integrative medical education can contribute to pediatric care for diverse families and complement cultural competency efforts. Ongoing efforts focus on adding content, developing evaluation techniques, and disseminating this resource to the health sciences community.

RESUMEN

Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) uses information technology (IT) to drive its Integrated Care strategy. IT enables the sharing of relevant health information between care providers. This information sharing is critical to closing the gaps between fragmented areas of the health system. The tragic case of James Whakaruru demonstrates how people have been falling through those gaps. The starting point of the Integrated Care strategic initiative was the transmission of electronic discharges and referral status messages from CMDHB's secondary provider, South Auckland Health (SAH), to GPs in the district. Successful pilots of a Well Child system and a diabetes disease management system embracing primary and secondary providers followed this. The improved information flowing from hospital to GPs now enables GPs to provide better management for their patients. The Well Child system pilot helped improve reported immunization rates in a high health need area from 40% to 90%. The diabetes system pilot helped reduce the proportion of patients with HbA1c rang:9 from 47% to 16%. IT has been implemented as an integral component of an overall Integrated Care strategic initiative. Within this context, Integrated Care IT has helped to achieve significant improvements in care outcomes, broken down barriers between health system silos, and contributed to the establishment of a system of care continuum that is better for patients.

RESUMEN

UNLABELLED: This paper is an integrated analysis of newspaper coverage, epidemiological rates, and recent social history of six prominent diseases. HYPOTHESES: Newspaper coverage of a disease has three developmental stages (emergence, maturation, and decline & death). Trends in newspaper coverage of a disease reflect trends in its mortality, prevalence, and incidence. Magnitudes of newspaper coverage of diseases reflect their differential mortality rates. DATA: Using the LEXIS-NEXIS news archive for major U.S. newspapers, we retrieve articles about cancer, heart disease, AIDS, diabetes, Alzheimer disease, and arthritis for the period 1977-1997. We also obtain mortality, prevalence, and incidence trends for the six diseases. RESULTS: During the two decades, newspaper coverage emerges for AIDS and Alzheimer disease and is in the mature stage for the other diseases; declines begin for heart disease and AIDS. Trends in news coverage closely parallel mortality trends, and less consistently prevalence and incidence trends. Sharp downturns and upturns in mortality are mirrored in news volume. High-mortality diseases prompt both the most news coverage and the largest proportions of articles with death topics. CONCLUSION: Newspaper coverage of diseases is responsive to their mortality levels and trends.

RESUMEN

Although historically a major concern of both the artist and the scientist was the observation of nature, the two disciplines split when science became more wedded to mathematics and quantification. Today, with visualization, art and science can again together provide a view of the natural world. A prototype curriculum for a new multidisciplinary science--Health Information Science--incorporates aspects of computer science, cognitive psychology, bioengineering, biomedical visualization, medicine, dentistry, anthropology, mathematics, library science, and the visual arts.
