BACKGROUND: Clay art therapy can be used as part of rehabilitation for chronic stroke patients. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine the effect of clay therapy on hopelessness and depression levels in chronic stroke patients who receive physical therapy and compare them to patients who only receive physical therapy. METHODS: This randomized controlled study was conducted between August 1st - September 28th, 2022 in Turkiye, with 60 patients who agreed to participate in the study and met the inclusion criteria, which were chronic stroke patients who received physical therapy. The patients were divided into two groups (30 in the experimental group, 30 in the control group) with the control group receiving only their routine physical therapy and rehabilitation (5 days a week, 40 sessions in total), while the experimental group received their routine physical therapy and rehabilitation program as well as clay therapy twice a week, 60 min per session, for 8 weeks. Demographic information of all the participants was recorded, and the Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Hopelessness Scale were administered before and after treatment. RESULTS: The patients' depression posttest scores (t(58) = -11.386; p = 0.000 < 0,05), and hopelessness posttest scores (t(58) = -10.247; p = 0.000 < 0,05) differed significantly based on their groups. The control group's depression posttest scores (x¯ =25,033) and hopelessness posttest scores (x¯ =15,000) were higher than the experimental group's depression posttest scores (x¯ =9,067) and hopelessness posttest scores (x¯ =8,000). The control group's feeling about the future posttest scores (x¯ =2,967) were higher than the experimental group's posttest scores (x¯ =0,967). The control group's loss of motivation posttest scores (x¯ =6,400) were higher than the experimental group's posttest scores (x¯ =2,667). CONCLUSION: It was seen that clay therapy, in addition to physical therapy, was effective in reducing depression and hopelessness in chronic stroke patients.

The aim of this in vivo study was to investigate the effects of a novel mycotoxin detoxifier whose formulation includes clay (bentonite and sepiolite), phytogenic feed additives (curcumin and silymarin) and postbiotics (yeast products) on the health, performance and redox status of weaned piglets under the dietary challenge of fumonisins (FUMs). The study was conducted in duplicate in the course of two independent trials on two different farms. One hundred and fifty (150) weaned piglets per trial farm were allocated into two separate groups: (a) T1 (control group): 75 weaned piglets received FUM-contaminated feed and (b) T2 (experimental group): 75 weaned piglets received FUM-contaminated feed with the mycotoxin-detoxifying agent from the day of weaning (28 days) until 70 days of age. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs), protein carbonyls (CARBs) and the overall antioxidant capacity (TAC) were assessed in plasma as indicators of redox status at 45 and 70 days of age. Furthermore, mortality and performance parameters were recorded at 28, 45 and 70 days of age, while histopathological examination was performed at the end of the trial period (day 70). The results of the present study reveal the beneficial effects of supplementing a novel mycotoxin detoxifier in the diets of weaners, including improved redox status, potential hepatoprotective properties and enhanced growth performance.

Rice husk, an agricultural waste from the rice industry, can cause serious environmental pollution if not properly managed. However, rice husk ash (RHA) has been found to have many positive properties, making it a potential replacement for non-renewable peat in soilless planting. Thus, this study investigated the impact of a RHA composite substrate on the growth, photosynthetic parameters, and fruit quality of cucumber (Yuyi longxiang variety) and melon (Yutian yangjiaomi variety). The RHA, peat, vermiculite, and perlite were blended in varying proportions, with the conventional seedling substrate (peat:vermiculite:perlite = 1:1:1 volume ratio) serving as the control (CK). All plants were cultivated in barrels filled with 10L of the mixed substrates. The results from this study found that RHA 40 (RHA:peat:vermiculite:perlite = 4:4:1:1 volume ratio) significantly enhanced substrate ventilation and positively influenced the stem diameter, root activity, seedling index, chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), and transpiration rate (Tr) of cucumber and melon plants. Additionally, plant planted using RHA 40, the individual fruit weight of cucumber and melon found to increase by 34.62% and 21.67%, respectively, as compared to the control. Aside from that, both cucumber and melon fruits had significantly higher sucrose, total soluble sugar, vitamin C, and soluble protein levels. This subsequently improved the activity of sucrose synthase and sucrose phosphate synthase in both cucumber and melon. In conclusion, the RHA 40 found to best promote cucumber and melon plant growth, increase plant leaf photosynthesis, and improve cucumber and melon fruit quality, making it a suitable substrate formula for cucumber and melon cultivation in place of peat.

Relapse and unresectability have become the main obstacle for further improving hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment effect. Currently, single therapy for HCC in clinical practice is limited by postoperative recurrence, intraoperative blood loss and poor patient outcomes. Multidisciplinary therapy has been recognized as the key to improving the long-term survival rate for HCC. However, the clinical application of HCC synthetic therapy is restricted by single functional biomaterials. In this study, a magnetic nanocomposite hydrogel (CG-IM) with iron oxide nanoparticle-loaded mica nanosheets (Iron oxide nanoparticles@Mica, IM) is reported. This biocompatible magnetic hydrogel integrated high injectability, magnetocaloric property, mechanical robustness, wet adhesion, and hemostasis, leading to efficient HCC multidisciplinary therapies including postoperative tumor margin treatment and percutaneous locoregional ablation. After minimally invasive hepatectomy of HCC, the CG-IM hydrogel can facilely seal the bleeding hepatic margin, followed by magnetic hyperthermia ablation to effectively prevent recurrence. In addition, CG-IM hydrogel can inhibit unresectable HCC by magnetic hyperthermia through the percutaneous intervention under ultrasound guidance.

Bacillus sensu lato were screened for their capacity to mineralize organic phosphorus (P) and promote plant growth, improving nitrogen (N) and P nutrition of soybean. Isolates were identified through Type Strain Genome Server (TYGS) and Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI). ILBB95, ILBB510 and ILBB592 were identified as Priestia megaterium, ILBB139 as Bacillus wiedmannii, ILBB44 as a member of a sister clade of B. pumilus, ILBB15 as Peribacillus butanolivorans and ILBB64 as Lysinibacillus sp. These strains were evaluated for their capacity to mineralize sodium phytate as organic P and solubilize inorganic P in liquid medium. These assays ranked ILBB15 and ILBB64 with the highest orthophosphate production from phytate. Rhizocompetence and plant growth promotion traits were evaluated in vitro and in silico. Finally, plant bioassays were conducted to assess the effect of the co-inoculation with rhizobial inoculants on nodulation, N and P nutrition. These bioassays showed that B. pumilus, ILBB44 and P. megaterium ILBB95 increased P-uptake in plants on the poor substrate of sand:vermiculite and also on a more fertile mix. Priestia megaterium ILBB592 increased nodulation and N content in plants on the sand:vermiculite:peat mixture. Peribacillus butanolivorans ILBB15 reduced plant growth and nutrition on both substrates. Genomes of ILBB95 and ILBB592 were characterized by genes related with plant growth and biofertilization, whereas ILBB15 was differentiated by genes related to bioremediation. Priestia megaterium ILBB592 is considered as nodule-enhancing rhizobacteria and together with ILBB95, can be envisaged as prospective PGPR with the capacity to exert positive effects on N and P nutrition of soybean plants.

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases, and current treatment regimens suffer from limited efficacy, nonspecific toxicity, and chemoresistance. With the advantages of good biocompatibility, large specific surface area, excellent cation exchange capacity, and easy availability, clay minerals have been receiving ever-increasing interests in cancer treatment. They can act as carriers to reduce the toxic side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs, and some of their own properties can kill cancer cells, etc. Compared with other morphologies clays, layered clay minerals (LCM) have attracted more and more attention due to adjustable interlayer spacing, easier ion exchange, and stronger adsorption capacity. In this review, the structure, classification, physicochemical properties, and functionalization methods of LCM are summarized. The state-of-the-art progress of LCM in antitumor therapy is systematically described, with emphasis on the application of montmorillonite, kaolinite, and vermiculite. Furthermore, the property-function relationships of LCM are comprehensively illustrated to reveal the design principles of clay-based antitumor systems. Finally, foreseeable challenges and outlook in this field are discussed.

Dealkalization is a prerequisite to converting bauxite residue into non-hazardous materials that can be used for various upcycling applications. Structural alkali (Na+) lodged inside the densely packed aluminosilicate-cages of sodalite, the dominant desilication product from refining alumina, is a common culprit in the persistence of strong alkalinity of bauxite residue. The present study unravelled chemical and mineralogical processes involved in sodalite dealkalization, driven by organic and inorganic acids. These acids have different H+ dissociation coefficients and their anions have different chelation abilities with surface metal atoms of aluminosilicate minerals. The efficacy of sodium removal by exposure to the acids was found not only dependent on the acid strength (pKa), but also on the chelating property of dissociated conjugate anions. Following an initial H+-Na+ exchange, Na+ removal from sodalite was correlated with partial hydrolysis of aluminosilicate network and resultant chelating reactions with acid anions. The selection of organic and inorganic acids whose conjugate bases possess good chelating capability in the pH buffer zone 7-9 (e.g., oxalate or phosphate), would provide significant aid to the dealkalization process. The findings in this study are crucial in understanding the conversion of bauxite residue into a soil-like growth media (technosol) for sustainable mined land rehabilitation.

Hydraulic conductivity of the overlap region of two needle-punched sodium bentonite (Na-B) geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) permeated with CaCl2 solutions under confining stresses of 20, 100, 250, and 500 kPa were evaluated. One of the GCLs consisted of a uniform layer of Na-B encapsulated between a nonwoven (NW) and a woven (W) geotextile, and the other one consisted of NW geotextiles on both sides. Supplemental bentonite was placed within the overlap region. Experiments were conducted with 10, 20, and 50 mM CaCl2 solutions representing dilute and aggressive leachates. The results indicate that in most of the scenarios there is a possibility that the flow is not completely vertical (meaning flow passes through the overlap region horizontally). As the confining stress increased, the horizontal flow through the overlap region for GCLs reduced effectively when permeated with deionized water and 10 mM CaCl2 solution, whereas the reduction of horizontal flow was limited to 20 mM and 50 mM CaCl2 solutions.

Environmental problems associated with chemical catalysts to fulfil an ever-increasing energy demand have led to the search for an alternative environment friendly heterogeneous catalyst. If a catalyst being used in the biodiesel production is not environment friendly, then the environment is being contaminated in another way while trying to avoid pollution caused by burning of fossil fuels. The present study reports the use of nano-magnetic catalyst Fe/SnO supported on feldspar for the transesterification of various non-edible feedstocks oil, including Pongamia pinnata (karanja), Carthamus oxyacantha (wild safflower), Citrullus colocynthis (bitter apple), Sinapis arvensis (wild mustard) and Ricinus communis (castor). The optimized transesterification parameter was oil to methanol ratio (1:5, 1:10, 1:15, 1:20 and 1:25), catalyst amount (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5%), temperature (40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 °C), and reaction times (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min). The biodiesel yield was found to be more than 97% for all the tested feedstocks with a maximum biodiesel yield of 98.1 ± 0.6% obtained for bitter apple seed oil under optimum conditions (oil to methanol ratio of 1:10, catalyst amount of 1% at 50 °C for 120 min). The catalysts used for transesterification were magnetically extracted after completion of the reaction. Different physico-chemical parameters like pour point, density, cloud point, iodine value, acid value, saponification and cetane number were determined and the quality of all the biodiesel samples were found to be in the standard range (ASTM D6751 and EN 1404). Different techniques like XRD, FTIR, SEM and EDX were used to characterize the prepared nano-magnetic (Fe/SnO/Feldspar) catalyst.

Functionalization of natural clay minerals for high value-added pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications receives significant research attention worldwide attributable to a rising demand and ongoing search for green, efficient, economically sustainable and ecofriendly geomaterials. Fibrous clays, i.e. palygorskite and sepiolite, are naturally-occurring hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate clay minerals with 2:1 layer-chain microstructure and one-dimensional nanofibrous morphology. Due to their unique structural, textural and compatibility features, over the past decade, fibrous clays and their organic modified derivatives are increasingly used in the dermopharmaceutical and cosmetic fields as excipients, active agents or nanocarriers to develop novel skin delivery systems or to modify drug release profile for enhanced health effects. This comprehensive review presents the up-to-date information on fibrous clays used in topically-applied products for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes with the focus on their performance-related structural characteristics and the underlying mechanisms. The recent advancement of fibrous clay-based skin delivery systems was summarized in wide range of applications including pelotherapy, wound healing, antimicrobial action, coloration and UV protection. An overview of the commonly used topically-applied dosage forms (powders, hydrogels, films, peloids and Pickering emulsion) as well as the toxicological aspects was also included, which might provide guidance to the design and development of fibrous clay-based skin delivery systems.

A modified sodium bentonite geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) designed for acid-and-alkaline resistance was evaluated for its potential application in the containment of bauxite residue leachate. A modified fluid loss test was employed to quickly evaluate the hydraulic conductivity (k) of the GCL using distilled water, tap water, and four bauxite liquors (BLs, leachate from bauxite residue reservoirs). The effects of swelling capacity of bentonite, prehydration, hydraulic gradient (i), ionic strength (I), and relative abundance of monovalent and multivalent cations (RMD) on the hydraulic conductivity of the GCL were analyzed. The results indicated that the BLs significantly decreased free swell index of the bentonite. As compared to increasing i, prehydration obviously enhanced hydraulic performance of the GCL. The four BLs increased k of the GCL by a factor of 4-12 relative to the tap water permeation condition, and the resultant k exceeded upper limit of 5.0 × 10-11 m/s for GCLs. The increase in k was attributed to compression in diffuse double layer of the bentonite and dissolution in clay minerals in ion-rich and hyperalkaline BLs, manifesting that further modification on the GCL is needed. The I was found a better indicator than the RMD on correlation with chemical compatibility of the GCL.

A new adsorbent that combines mineral vermiculite with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was used for Cd2+ removal. The influence of vermiculite presence on the toxic effects of Cd2+ to Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast was evaluated as a function of the microorganisms' respiratory activity (CO2 production). The Cd2+ toxicity increased with prolonged exposure time reaching the LC50 value of 857 and 489 mg L-1 after 30 and 120 min, respectively. The yeast managed to bioaccumulate 25.0 ± 0.6 mg g-1 of Cd2+ at the initial Cd2+ concentration of 741.9 mg L-1; the maximum Cd2+ adsorption capacity of vermiculite reached 25 ± 5 mg g-1. The addition of the mineral decreased the cations toxic effect; the LC20 value in vermiculite absence attained approximately 200 mg L-1 after 30 min and decreased to 80 mg L-1 after 2 h, while in the bio-mineral system it was at the level of 435 ± 50 mg L-1 without a significant change in time. The mineral provided a superior living environment for the yeast by removing part of the cations, releasing essential microelements and providing a protective, clay hutch-like habitat for the cells.

BACKGROUND: Mica drugs, a group of herbo-metallic traditional preparations comprising biotite mica as the major mineral ingredient, are prescribed for skin disorders and respiratory ailments and other chronic conditions in South Asian countries, particularly India and Sri Lanka. Mica-based drugs (Abhrak drugs) are subjected to unique and varied preparation procedures and the bioactivity of the drugs can be affected by drug-processing conditions, the ingredients used and the mica composition. The current study aimed to evaluate and compare, on the basis of their physical and chemical characteristics, the antimicrobial potential of two commercial mica drugs AbBb (Abhrak bhashma) and AbCh (Abhrak Chenhuram) and two mica drugs ABL1 (Abhrak Bhasma Laboratory Prepared 1) and ABL2 (Abhrak Bhasma Laboratory Prepared 2) prepared in the laboratory under different conditions. METHODS: Antimicrobial activity of all four drugs was assessed at 10 mg/ml concentration against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherischia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and Candida albicans using well diffusion assay, agar dilution assay and Miles and Misra method. Major and trace metal constituents of the drug samples were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry. Mineralogical properties, bacteria-mineral interactions, morphological changes in microbes and the surface characteristics of the drugs were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: The drugs ABL1, ABL2 and AbBh exhibited antimicrobial activity against only Gram-positive organisms (S. aureus and MRSA) when tested with Miles and Misra method (broth method). Mineralogical studies (XRD) revealed that biotite mica was altered into secondary clay minerals and iron oxides in the commercial drug AbCh while the other three drugs had altered mica and iron oxide phases. The essential elements (Na, K, Ca and Mg) required for microbial functions were present in varying extents in all four drugs while they were present in exceedingly high amounts in AbCh having comparatively high cation-exchange capacity, consistent with the observation that AbCh was inactive against all the microbes tested. The three drugs (ABL1, ABL2 and AbBh) showing antimicrobial activity contained comparatively high amounts of Fe, Zn and Cu that are known to display antimicrobial properties at high concentrations. SEM studies revealed that the drug particles adhered and entrapped the bacterial species, presumably modifying the physiochemical characteristics of the bacteria and eventually causing lethality. CONCLUSION: Three of the four mica drugs inhibited the tested Gram-negative bacteria and the antibacterial activity of the mica drugs depends on their constituents and the methods of preparation.

Fluorine (F) enrichment originating from natural sources is difficult to remove using chemical washing methods due to the large chemical-resistant residual fraction. This study evaluates the feasibility of using a froth-flotation separation method to remediate soil with a high F concentration caused by mica weathering, and it investigates the optimal conditions for this process, including pH of the slurry, collector dosage, and sample mechanical preparation strategy. The established optimum conditions are pH 3.5, 300 mg/kg collector dosage (tallow amine acetate), which can effectively separate quartz and mica, and a sieving-and-milling strategy that involves discarding particles of size < 0.05 mm, milling those in the range of 0.5-2.0 mm (until < approx. 0.3 mm), and mixing particles with sizes in the range of 0.05-0.5 mm. The target contamination level of 400 mg/kg for the test soil was not met after the first flotation separation process. However, after milling the residue of the first process and subjecting it to a second flotation separation process, the required contamination level was achieved. Consequently, the proposed froth-flotation separation process can be used as a successful alternative technique to remediate F-enriched soils from natural origin that have highly chemical-resistant forms.

RESUMEN

Activity concentrations of 42 different feldspathic dental ceramic powders were determined using a gamma spectrometer with an HPGe detector. The average 238U, 232Th and 226Ra activity concentrations of the specimens were 126 ± 8 Bq kg-1, 5.6 ± 0.5 Bq kg-1 and 12.7 ± 1.2 Bq kg-1, respectively. The average 40K activity was found as 2855 ± 89 Bq kg-1 ranging from 2252 ± 70 Bq kg-1 to 3522 ± 110 Bq kg-1 due to high potassium content in dental ceramics. None of the activity concentration measurements exceeded the limits by EC and ISO.

Litter sanitation treatments and feed supplements that stimulate bird growth. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of zeolite (z) and halloysite (h) in feed and rye straw litter on growth performance, meat quality in chickens. 500 males Ross 308 were allocated to 5 groups (10 replicates). Feed for groups 2-5 was supplemented with halloysite and zeolite (25:75). The content of aluminosilicates in the feed was different depending on the feeding phase: 0.5, 1, 1.5, or 2%. The following doses were used in litter: 2, 0.800 kg/m2 h; 3, 0.400 kg/m2 h and 0.400 kg/m2 z; 4, 0.800 kg/m2 z; 5, 0.200 kg/m2 h, and 0.600 kg/m2 z. Growth, and meat quality were analysed. Body weight and body weight gain were higher in groups 2-5 than in group 1, while feed intake was lower in groups 1 and 2 (p < 0.05). Body weight, the weight of carcass, and most of its elements were higher in the experimental groups (p < 0.05). Breast muscles from group 1 were characterised by better water-holding capacity and higher protein content, while those from 4 had higher content of collagen and water (p < 0.05). Breast muscles from group 3 were characterized by lower yellowness than in 2 (p < 0.05). Leg muscles from group 1 were characterized by lower redness than in 4 (p < 0.05). Water-holding capacity was better in group 3 and protein content was higher in 2 (p < 0.05). The content of fat in leg muscle was lower in all experimental groups compared to control (p < 0.05). This indicates the suitability of aluminosilicates in poultry management practice, with better growth and meat quality.

BACKGROUND: Fresh mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) are highly perishable and easily lose quality during storage. The packaging system can retard the deterioration of fresh mushrooms. However, water vapor transmission rates of commodity plastic films are lower than the transpiration rate of mushrooms, resulting in increased moisture condensation in the package and perishability of mushrooms due to microbial growth. A possible solution for controlling the humidity level in the package is to use a hygroscopic material. Acid leaching can improve the chemical and physical properties of expanded vermiculite (EV). The aim of this study was to develop a novel hygroscopic agent from acidified expanded vermiculite (AEV) and calcium chloride (CaCl2 ) that has a high moisture absorption capacity and maintains a powdered form in the packaging system for fresh mushrooms. RESULTS: Our findings revealed that leaching EV with hydrochloric acid increased porosity and hydrophilicity. The combination of AEV:CaCl2 at 6:4 (w/w, AEV/CS40) showed the highest moisture adsorption capacity at 1.724 ± 0.03 g water per gram of material. Then, 1.55 g of AEV/CS40 was applied to the mushroom packaging and stored at 4 °C. The results indicated that AEV/CS40 could delay mushroom deterioration in terms of color change, firmness, pH, total soluble solids, and microbial growth. CONCLUSION: The study findings indicate that the alternative solid hygroscopic material obtained by combining AEV with CaCl2 has potential for use as a hygroscopic material for preserving the quality of white button mushrooms. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

In this study, polyurethane (PU) composite foams were modified with 2 wt.% of vermiculite fillers, which were themselves modified with casein, chitosan, and potato protein. The impact of the fillers on selected properties of the obtained composites, including their rheological (foaming behavior, dynamic viscosity), thermal (temperature of thermal decomposition stages), flame-retardant (e.g., limiting oxygen index, ignition time, heat peak release), and mechanical properties (toughness, compressive strength (parallel and perpendicular), flexural strength) were investigated. Among all the modified polyurethane composites, the greatest improvement was noticed in the PU foams filled with vermiculite modified with casein and chitosan. For example, after the addition of modified vermiculite fillers, the foams' compressive strength was enhanced by ~6-18%, their flexural strength by ~2-10%, and their toughness by ~1-5%. Most importantly, the polyurethane composites filled with vermiculite filler and modified vermiculite fillers exhibited improved flame resistance characteristics (the value of total smoke release was reduced by ~34%, the value of peak heat release was reduced by ~25%).

Mycotoxins are naturally occurring toxins that can affect livestock health and performance upon consumption of contaminated feedstuffs. To mitigate the negative effects of mycotoxins, sequestering agents, adsorbents, or binders can be included to feed to interact with toxins, aiding their passage through the gastrointestinal tract (GI) and reducing their bioavailability. The parietal cell wall components of Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been found to interact in vitro with mycotoxins, such as, but not limited to, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), and to improve animal performance when added to contaminated diets in vivo. The present study aimed to examine the pharmacokinetics of the absorption of radiolabeled AFB1 in rats in the presence of a yeast cell wall-based adsorbent (YCW) compared with that in the presence of the clay-based binder hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate (HSCAS). The results of the initial pharmacokinetic analysis showed that the absorption process across the GI tract was relatively slow, occurring over a matter of hours rather than minutes. The inclusion of mycotoxin binders increased the recovery of radiolabeled AFB1 in the small intestine, cecum, and colon at 5 and 10 h, revealing that they prevented AFB1 absorption compared with a control diet. Additionally, the accumulation of radiolabeled AFB1 was more significant in the blood plasma, kidney, and liver of animals fed the control diet, again showing the ability of the binders to reduce the assimilation of AFB1 into the body. The results showed the potential of YCW in reducing the absorption of AFB1 in vivo, and in protecting against the damaging effects of AFB1 contamination.

Lemon essential oils (LEO), as natural bacteriostatic agents, show significant loss in the preparation processes of food packaging materials, therefore, an effective encapsulation of LEO is urgent for realizing the protection. In this study, LEO was absorbed by thermally stable and porous vermiculite (VML) to form LEO/VML complex, which is further coupled with konjac glucomannan-grafted-poly (acrylic acid)/polyvinyl alcohol (KGM-g-PAA/PVA) composite. KGM-g-PAA/PVA bacteriostatic water-absorbing pad was prepared via electrospinning technique, which can minimize the loss of LEO. The VML (1 g) can significantly reduce LEO loss and achieve sustained control LEO release from the pad, which follows the predominant mechanism of Fick diffusion law. The sustained control LEO release from the pad can effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli during storage, thus prolonging shelf life of chilled pork for 3 day. This study suggests that KGM-g-PAA/PVA pad may have a great potential in the field of intelligent packaging.
