We recently reported enhanced parasympathetic activation at rest throughout pregnancy associated with regular yoga practice. The present study presents a secondary analysis of data collected within a prospective cohort study of 33 pregnant women practicing yoga once weekly throughout pregnancy and 36 controls not involved in formal pregnancy exercise programs. The objective was to assess the impact of prenatal yoga on the autonomic nervous system stress response. Healthy pregnant women with singleton pregnancies were recruited in the first trimester. There was no significant difference in the maternal body mass index (BMI) between the yoga group and the controls (24.06 ± 3.55 vs. 23.74 ± 3.43 kg/m2, p = 0.693). Women practicing yoga were older (28.6 ± 3.9 vs. 31.3 ± 3.5 years, p = 0.005) and more often nulliparous (26 (79%) vs. 18 (50%), p = 0.001). We studied heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in the time domain (SDNN, standard deviation of regular R-R intervals, and RMSSD, square root of mean squared differences of successive R-R intervals) and frequency domain (ln(LF/HF), natural logarithm of low-frequency to high-frequency power), as well as synchronization indices of heart rate, blood pressure and respiration during and immediately following acute psychological stress of a standardized mental challenge test. Measurements were performed once per trimester before and after yoga or a 30 min moderate-intensity walk. Statistical comparison was performed using three-way analyses of variance (p < 0.05 significant). Time domain HRV parameters during and following mental challenge in the yoga group were significantly higher compared to the controls regardless of the trimester (F = 7.22, p = 0.009 for SDNN and F = 9.57, p = 0.003 for RMSSD, respectively). We observed no significant differences in the yoga group vs. the controls in terms of ln(LF/HF) and synchronization indices. Regular prenatal yoga practice was associated with a significantly reduced sympathetic response to mental challenge and quicker recovery after acute psychological stress. These effects persisted throughout pregnancy with regular practice.

Reports on autonomic responses to transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) and osteopathic manipulative techniques have been equivocal, partly due to inconsistent interpretation of heart rate variability (HRV). We developed a mechanistic framework for the interpretation of HRV based on a model of sinus node automaticity that considers autonomic effects on Phase 3 repolarization and Phase 4 depolarization of the sinoatrial action potential. The model was applied to HRV parameters calculated from ECG recordings (healthy adult humans, both genders) before (30 min), during (15 min), and after (30 min) a time control intervention (rest, n = 23), taVNS (10 Hz, 300 µs, 1-2 mA, cymba concha, left ear, n = 12), or occipitoatlantal decompression (OA-D, n = 14). The experimental protocol was repeated on 3 consecutive days. The model simulation revealed that low frequency (LF) HRV best predicts sympathetic tone when calculated from heart rate time series, while high frequency (HF) HRV best predicts parasympathetic tone when calculated from heart period time series. Applying our model to the HRV responses to taVNS and OA-D, revealed that taVNS increases cardiac parasympathetic tone, while OA-D elicits a mild decrease in cardiac sympathetic tone.

OBJECTIVES: To observe the therapeutic effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) based on the theory of "qi ascending and descending movement" in patients after general anesthesia laparoscopic cholecystectomy, so as to explore the impact of TEAS on the autonomic nervous system and gastrointestinal function of patients. METHODS: A total of 204 patients scheduled to undergo general anesthesia laparoscopic cholecystectomy were selected and randomly divided into control, double acupoints and multiple acupoints groups, with 68 cases in each group. For patients in the multiple acupoints group, TEAS was applied at Zusanli (ST36), Tiantu (CV22), Danzhong (CV17), Zhongwan (CV12), Taichong (LR3), and Neiguan (PC6) 30 min before anesthesia induction until the end of the surgery. In the double acupoints group, TEAS was applied only at ST36 and PC6. No electrical stimulation was applied in the control group. The postoperative bloating, bowel sound recovery time, first farting time, first defecation time, length of hospital stay, nausea and vomiting were compared among the three groups. Heart rate variability was monitored by twelve-lead electrocardiogram to evaluate the autonomic nervous function of the patients, including the low frequency power/high frequency power ratio (LF/HF), the standard deviation of all sinus RR intervals (SDNN), and the root mean square of difference between successive normal RR intervals (RMSSD). RESULTS: At 6 h and 24 h after surgery, the symptoms of bloating, nausea and vomiting in the multiple acupoints group and double acupoints group were significantly improved compared to the control group (P<0.05), and the multiple acupoints group was superior to the double acupoints group (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the bowel sound recovery time, first farting time, first defecation time, and length of hospital stay were significantly shorter (P<0.05) in the multiple acupoints group and double acupoints group, and the multiple acupoints group was superior to the double acupoints group (P<0.05). At 1 d and 2 d after surgery, compared with the control group, LF/HF was decreased (P<0.05) while SDNN and RMSSD were increased (P<0.05) in the multiple acupoints group and double acupoints group, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: TEAS treatment based on the theory of "qi ascending and descending movement" can relieve gastrointestinal dysfunction, reduce early postoperative sympathetic nerve excitement and maintain parasympathetic nerve tension in patients after general anesthesia laparoscopic cholecystectomy, thereby promoting gastrointestinal function recovery.

Tai Chi serves as an effective exercise modality for enhancing autonomic regulation. However, a majority of existing studies have employed the single routine (SR) protocol as the basis for health interventions. The extent to which the gong routine application (GRA) protocol achieves similar levels of exercise load stimulation as traditional single practice routines remains uncertain. Therefore, this study the distinct characteristics of autonomic load stimulation in these different protocols, thus providing a biological foundation to support the development of Tai Chi health promotion intervention programs. we recruited a cohort of forty-five university students to participate in the 15 min GRA protocol and SR protocol. We collected heart rate and heart rate variability indicators during periods of rest, GRA protocol, and SR protocol utilizing the Polar Scale. Additionally, we assessed the mental state of the participants using the BFS State of Mind Scale. In summary, the autonomic load is lower in the GRA protocol compared to the SR protocol, with lower sympathetic activity but higher parasympathetic activity in the former. Results are specific to college students, additional research is necessary to extend support for frail older adults. It is advised to incorporate GRA protocol alongside SR protocol in Tai Chi instruction. This approach is likely to enhance Tai Chi skills and yield greater health benefits.

BACKGROUND: High blood pressure (BP) is a non-communicable disease that is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. High BP can be managed by both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Non-pharmacological treatment, such as slow-breathing training (SBT), has been shown to reduce BP. However, there are few studies on the effect of SBT on both cardiac activation and oxidative stress in people with high BP. OBJECTIVES: To explore the effect of SBT on cardiac autonomic function (i.e., heart rate variability: HRV) and neuroendocrine response (i.e., salivary cortisol). METHODS: One hundred people (including 89 women) with high BP were randomly assigned to either a control (n = 50) or intervention group (n = 50). The intervention program was conducted for 30 min per day, for 5 days per week, for 4 weeks, with a total of 20 sessions of the SBT at the rate of 10 times per minute, whereas the control group was required to continue with their daily routine. HRV, BP, and salivary cortisol were measured before and after the intervention program. A two-way mixed ANOVA was performed for within-group and between-group comparisons over time. RESULTS: Of the 100 participants, 71 individuals completed the study. The participants in the intervention group had a lower BP and salivary cortisol levels compared to those in the control group (p < .05). Further, those participants showed an increase in the standard deviation of normal R-R intervals after the 4-week intervention program (p < .05). CONCLUSION: This study provided evidence demonstrating the effect of SBT on cardiac autonomic and stress reactivity, which has important implications for health promotion in people with high BP. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of Fuzheng Qingdu Decoction (FZQDD) on the autonomic function and cancer-related symptoms of patients with advanced gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy to verify its clinical efficacy. METHODS: Sixty-two patients with stage III or IV gastric cancer were included in this study. The patients were divided into 2 groups: the chemotherapy (33 patients) and chemotherapy with FZQDD (29 patients) groups. The primary outcome was the autonomic function of the patients before and after the interventions. The parameters that were used to assess autonomic function were deceleration capacity (DC) and acceleration capacity (AC) of heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV), which comprised standard deviation of the normal-normal interval (SDNN), root mean square of successive interval differences (RMSSD), low-frequency power (LF), high-frequency power (HF), total power (TP), and LF-HF ratio. The secondary outcomes were cancer-related symptoms and the quality of life. RESULTS: DC and HRV parameters (ie, SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF, and TP) were significantly decreased in the chemotherapy group; however, AC significantly increased after the interventions. No significant differences were observed in the DC, AC, and HRV parameters before and after the interventions in the chemotherapy with FZQDD group. Nevertheless, the changes in DC, AC, and HRV parameters (SDNN, RMSSD, HF, and TP) before and after the interventions were statistically significant between both the groups. FZQDD significantly improved the cancer-related symptoms and the quality of life of the patients. CONCLUSIONS: Oxaliplatin combined with S-1 (tegafur, gimeracil, and oteracil potassium) can impair autonomic modulation in patients with advanced gastric cancer. FZQDD can alleviate autonomic dysfunction by increasing the parasympathetic activity and decreasing the sympathetic tone, helping patients restore the dynamic sympathovagal balance, and significantly improving the cancer-related symptoms and the quality of life of patients.

BACKGROUND: Both noninvasive transauricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) and traditional medical practice (TMP), such as auriculotherapy, use the auricle as a starting point for stimulation, but with two different conceptual frameworks: taVNS depends on vagal afferences to account for its effects, whereas TMP requires stimulation of the ear with high topographical accuracy regardless of the afferent nerves. The aim of this study was to measure heart rate variability (HRV) and cold water-induced vasodilation (CIVD) after puncturing two different ear points with the same afference but that should have opposite effects according to TMP. METHODS: Ten healthy subjects were investigated in this single-blinded crossover study over three sessions. In the first session, sympathetic activation was performed via cold water immersion of the right hand, with recordings taken from multiple fingers. HRV was assessed in the time domain (square root of the mean squared differences of NN intervals (RMSSD)) and frequency domain (low (LF) and high frequencies (HF)). In the second and third sessions, the same skin immersion test was performed, and mechanical stimulation was applied to the ear at two different points on the internal surface of the antitragus, one with alleged parasympathetic activity and the other with alleged sympathetic activity. The stimulation was done with semipermanent needles. RESULTS: Stimulation of the point with alleged parasympathetic activity immediately resulted in a significant decrease in RMSSD in 75% of the subjects and in LF in 50% of the subjects, while stimulation of the point with alleged sympathetic activity resulted in an increase in HF and RMSSD in 50% of the subjects. Stimulation of these points did not affect the CIVD reflex. The 20 min cold water immersion induced an immediate decrease in LF and the LF/HF ratio and an increase in HF. The skin temperature of the nonimmersed medius significantly decreased when the contralateral hand was immersed, from 34.4 °C to 31.8 °C. CONCLUSIONS: Stimulation of two different ear points innervated by the same afferent nerves elicited different HRV responses, suggesting somatotopy and a vagal effect beyond vagal afferences. Several studies have demonstrated promising results of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) in treating various disorders; however, no mechanistic studies have investigated this technique's neural network and autonomic nervous system effects. This study aims to describe how taVNS can affect EEG metrics, HRV, and pain levels. Healthy subjects were randomly allocated into two groups: the active taVNS group and the sham taVNS group. Electroencephalography (EEG) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) were recorded at baseline, 30 min, and after 60 min of 30 Hz, 200-250 µs taVNS, or sham stimulation, and the differences between the metrics were calculated. Regarding vagal projections, some studies have demonstrated the role of the vagus nerve in modulating brain activity, the autonomic system, and pain pathways. However, more data is still needed to understand the mechanisms of taVNS on these systems. In this context, this study presents methods to provide data for a deeper discussion about the physiological impacts of this technique, which can help future therapeutic investigations in various conditions.

While trauma-focused psychotherapies have been shown effective in youth with PTSD, the relationship between treatment response and alterations in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) associated with PTSD, remains incompletely understood. During neutral and personalized trauma script imagery heart rate (HR), pre-ejection period (PEP) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) were recorded in youth aged 8-18 with PTSD or partial PTSD (n = 76) and trauma-exposed controls (TEC) (n = 27) to determine ANS activity and stress reactivity. Within the patient group, 77.6% met the full DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for PTSD, the remaining 22.4% met the criteria for partial PTSD. Youth with (partial) PTSD were subsequently treated with eight sessions of either trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. PTSD severity was assessed using the Clinician-Administered PTSD scale for Children and Adolescents to divide patients into responders and non-responders. Youth with (partial) PTSD relative to TEC had higher overall HR during both neutral and trauma imagery (p = .05). Youth with (partial) PTSD showed RSA decrease during trauma imagery relative to neutral imagery, the reverse of TEC (p = .01). Relative to non-responders, responders demonstrated a significant baseline to posttreatment increase of RSA response to stress only when employing a ≥ 50% response criterion (p = .05) and not with the primary ≥ 30% criterion (p = .12). Our results suggest overall higher HR and sympathetic nervous system activity as well as vagal withdrawal in response to stress in youth with (partial) PTSD and only provide partial support for normalization of the latter with successful trauma-focused psychotherapy.

Cardiovascular rhythms representing functional states of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are insufficiently reflected by the current physiological model based on low and high frequency bands (LF, HF, resp.). An intermediate (IM) frequency band generated by a brainstem pacemaker was included in systemic physiological ANS analyses of forehead skin perfusion (SP), ECG, and respiration. Data of 38 healthy participants at T0 and T1 (+1 week) before, during, and following osteopathic cranial vault hold (CVH) stimulation were analyzed including momentary frequencies of highest amplitude, amplitudes in low (0.05-0.12 Hz), IM (0.12-0.18 Hz), and high (0.18-0.4 Hz) frequency bands, and established heart rate variability (HRV) metrics. During CVH, LF interval durations increased, whereas IM/HF band durations decreased significantly. Amplitudes increased significantly in all frequency bands. A cluster analysis found one response pattern dominated by IM activity (47% of participants) with highly stable 0.08 Hz oscillation to CVH, and one dominated by LF activity (0.10 Hz) at T0, increasing to IM activity at T1. Showing frequency ratios at ≈3:1, respiration was not responsible for oscillations in PPG during CVH. HRV revealed no significant responses. Rhythmic patterns in SP and respiration matched previous findings on a reticular "0.15 Hz rhythm". Involvement of baroreflex pathways is discussed as alternative explanation.

Functional somatic syndromes (FSSs) represent a clinically important group of disorders that are often stress-related. Their autonomic pathophysiology, including reduced heart rate variability (HRV), has been reported. However, the response pattern to mental stress and recovery in FSSs remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to clarify the pattern of autonomic stress response and recovery to mental arithmetic stress in patients with FSS compared to that in healthy controls. This cross-sectional study included 79 patients with FSS who visited the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine at a university hospital in Japan and 39 healthy controls. Following a mood questionnaire and obtaining epidemiologic information, HRV was measured during three periods (5 min each): relaxation baseline resting, stress (mental arithmetic task), and post-stress recovery period. The HRV analysis included inter-beat interval, low frequency power, and high frequency power. Compared to healthy controls, patients with FSS exhibited significantly higher scores on the mood questionnaire, prolonged duration of illness, and decreased functionality in daily activities. While the healthy control group showed a pronounced stress response pattern with a significant decrease in vagal HRV and recovery, the FSS group showed a "flat" vagal stress response pattern, and the HRV in the FSS group was lower at relaxation baseline, remained low during the stress, and did not change post stress. Patients with severe FSS exhibit an altered stress response pattern. Our results could provide significant clues for the diagnosis and treatment of such patients, as well as useful insights into the relationship between stress and illness.

Dissociative symptoms, such as depersonalization and derealization, are experienced by about half of individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Theoretical models propose that acute dissociation is accompanied by specific behavioral, physiological, and experiential alterations and contributes to unfavorable PTSD symptom course. Yet, empirical evidence is scarce. Here, we explored associations between dissociative and behavioral, physiological, and experiential threat responses as well as effects of dissociative responding on PTSD symptom course. Individuals with PTSD (N = 71) participated in a preregistered script-driven imagery study including exposure to standardized, detail-enriched trauma, and neutral scripts. Stabilometry, eye-tracking, facial electromyography, autonomic psychophysiology, and self-report data were collected. Moreover, PTSD symptoms were assessed before and 3 months after testing. Analyses did not link acute dissociation to bodily and facial immobility or staring in response to trauma scripts. However, dissociation displayed an inverted U-shaped relationship with heart rate and was linked to higher nonspecific skin conductance fluctuation and higher high-frequency heart rate variability in response to trauma scripts. Moreover, acute dissociation was linked to higher self-reported negative affect responses to trauma scripts and displayed a U-shaped relationship with unfavorable PTSD symptom course. While results did not confirm hypothesized behavioral markers of dissociation, they do support defense-cascade model assumptions of an inverted U-shaped relationship between dissociation and psychophysiological arousal resulting from a progression of parasympathetic versus sympathetic dominance with increasing dissociation. On an experiential level, results did not confirm posttraumatic dissociation-induced emotional numbing, questioning theoretical notions. The observed nonlinear associations may help explain the heterogeneity of prior findings and might inform an updated conceptualization of posttraumatic dissociation. OBJECTIVE: To understand research advances and frontiers of acupuncture regulation on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) over the past decade through a bibliometric analysis. METHODS: Publications related to acupuncture regulation on the ANS were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace software was used to analyze the datasets and generate knowledge maps. RESULTS: A total of 445 relevant publications published between 2013 and 2022 were included in this bibliometric analysis. The number of annual publications fluctuated from 2013 to 2016 but increased gradually from 2016 to 2022. China produced the highest number of publications, while the USA established the most extensive cooperation relationships. China Academy of Chinese Medical Science was the most productive institution. Chen Jiande D.Z. was the most prolific author and Rong Peijing holds the most extensive cooperation network. Han Jisheng was the most co-cited author. Relevant research involved mechanism exploration and clinical efficacy research, and "anti-inflammatory effect" was the most active research topic, especially cholinergic anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The most cited references mainly focused on inflammation. Gastrointestinal and cardiovascular disorders were the most active medical conditions studied in this field. CONCLUSIONS: Research related to acupuncture regulation on the ANS mainly focused on anti-inflammation, and regulating gastrointestinal and cardiovascular function over the past decade. However, the mechanisms of the autonomic effects of acupuncture need further investigation. High-quality clinical studies are required to determine the optimal parameters of acupuncture for clinical application.

Background: Tai Chi, originating in China, is a mind-body exercise that integrates mind training, Qi training, and body training. While Tai Chi practice has demonstrated beneficial physical and psychological health benefits, how it achieves effects has been less studied. In recent years, some researchers have begun to explore the potential of heart rate variability (HRV) changes as balancing the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to achieve results, but only a few studies have directly tested how Tai Chi impacts HRV, and results have been mixed. Objective: This study systematically evaluates the effects of Tai Chi on HRV. Methods: Electronic databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and EBSCOhost direct from inception until December 2020 were searched to obtain eligible studies. The primary outcomes examined were HRV parameters (time domain and frequency domain), and secondary analysis was whether breathing was emphasized during Tai Chi interventions. Results: Based on the 11 randomized controlled trials included comparing Tai Chi with non-active control condition, meta-analyses showed significantly beneficial effects on HRV parameters (low-frequency power [LF], mean difference [MD] = -200.40, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 365.31 to -35.49, p = 0.02; normalized low-frequency power [nLF], MD = -7.39, 95% CI: -12.48 to -2.29, p = 0.004; total power [TP], MD = -649.82, 95% CI: -1180.54 to -119.11, p = 0.02; very low-frequency power [VLF], MD = -200.55, 95% CI: -349.63 to -51.46, p = 0.008; root mean square of the square sum of the difference between adjacent normal heartbeat intervals [RMSSD], MD = 2.59, 95% CI: -7.23 to 12.41, p < 0.0001; standard deviation of the heartbeat interval [SDNN], MD = 8.33, 95% CI: 0.69 to 15.98, p = 0.03). The effect of Tai Chi on certain HRV parameters compared with active control conditions was less favorable (nLF, MD = 6.42, 95% CI: 3.74 to 9.09, p < 0.00001; normalized high-frequency power [nHF], MD: -6.13, 95% CI: -8.76 to -3.50, p < 0.00001; low-frequency/high-frequency power ratio [LF/HF], MD = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.68 to 1.33, p < 0.00001). In addition, studies describing an emphasis on breathing in the Tai Chi intervention showed positive impact on HRV (nLF, MD = -3.22, 95% CI: -5.32 to -1.12, p = 0.003; nHF, MD = 3.80, 95% CI: 0.80 to 6.81, p = 0.01; SDNN, MD = 5.55, 95% CI: 4.85 to 6.25, p < 0.00001). Conclusions: Meta-analysis results showed that Tai Chi compared with non-active control conditions has a positive impact on key HRV parameters associated with the ANS balance. However, active control condition comparisons showed greater HRV improvements than for Tai Chi. Considering the limited number of studies and their heterogeneity, further robust studies are necessary to verify findings and investigate differential effects of Tai Chi on HRV.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of music on heart rate recovery (HRR) and heart rate variability (HRV) after intense exertion. METHODS: Five hundred male students enrolled at Yongin University, Korea, underwent a cycling test to assess aerobic capacity; 180 students with equal scores were selected for a music intervention, which was conducted after vigorous exercise. The 180 participants were randomized into three music groups and a control group; the participants in each music group listened to music at three different tempos: slow (lento) (n = 45), moderate (moderato) (n = 45), and fast (allegretto) (n = 45). The control group did not listen to music (n = 45). After the test, data on cardiac recovery and HRV were gathered and modeled. RESULTS: The results revealed no significant variation in HRR and HRV indexes between the four cohorts (p > .05), and no significant differences were observed in the anaerobic power cycling indexes during strenuous exercise (p > .05). The music intervention had a significant impact on HR, low-frequency power (LF), high-frequency power (HF), normalized LF (LFnorm ), normalized HF (HFnorm ), and the LF/HF ratio during recovery (p < .05). CONCLUSION: After rigorous activity, listening to allegretto music improved HRR and restored HRV equilibrium, which is critical to preventing and minimizing arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.

PURPOSE: Self-myofascial release (SMR) is a form of self-massage aiming to release tension, improve blood flow, and alleviate muscle soreness. This study aimed to determine whether a single session of SMR could impact cardiovascular parameters at rest and during a cold pressor test (CPT). METHODS: Twenty male participants (aged 26 ± 2 years) underwent a 20-min SMR and a 20-min seated control condition (CON) on two separate test days in a randomized order. Peripheral and central blood pressure (BP), total peripheral resistance (TPR), pulse wave velocity (PWV), heart rate (HR), root mean square of successive RR interval differences (RMSSD), and the quotient of low-frequency power and high-frequency power (LF/HF) were measured both at rest and during a CPT before (t0), 2 min (t1), and 20 min (t2) after the SMR and CON. RESULTS: Time × condition interactions could be detected for peripheral and central diastolic BP, TPR, HR, and RMSSD. Following the SMR, peripheral diastolic BP, central diastolic BP, TPR, and RMSSD were reduced, while HR was increased compared to the CON. Regarding the CPT time × condition interactions could be detected for peripheral, and central diastolic BP, with lower values after SMR. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study suggest that a single bout of SMR confers favorable cardiovascular benefits in healthy normotensive individuals. Furthermore, SMR can attenuate the hemodynamic reactivity to a stress test. Future research should address whether regular SMR leads to chronic adaptations similar to regular, moderate aerobic exercise, massage therapy, and static stretching.

In order to systematize the modern literature data on the effectiveness of biofeedback in the treatment of patients with depressive disorders, clinical efficacy and prospects for use in psychiatric practice, publications in the MEDLINE / PubMed, eLibrary databases from 2013 to 2023, as well as relevant references in the reference lists of the analyzed articles, were selected by the keywords «biofeedback¼, «depression¼, «depression therapy¼, «electroencephalogram¼, «non-drug treatments for depression¼. The analysis of data has shown that the biofeedback method demonstrates a certain therapeutic potential in the treatment of depression. It can be used to augment therapy in case of insufficient therapeutic effect, with low patient compliance, as well as poor tolerability of psychopharmacotherapy and in the presence of residual symptoms after pharmacological treatment. The method allows the correction of the psycho-emotional state, improves the balance between the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system, and contributes to a more stable clinical effect. At the same time, further studies are needed, with the inclusion of large samples of patients from various nosological groups and with an analysis of the comparability of the effects of various biofeedback protocols.

OBJECTIVE: Crohn's disease (CD) can be associated with a wide range of extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs), including neurological ones. Published studies differ in their conclusions about the epidemiology and etiopathogenesis of neurological EIMs. The aims of this study were to demonstrate the presence and find risk factors of peripheral (somatic and autonomic) neuropathy patients with severe CD on anti-TNFα biological therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A clinical examination focusing on detection of peripheral sensor-motor nervous dysfunction (including Sudoscan) and examination of autonomic nervous system dysfunction (using Ewing´s battery tests and spectral analysis) together with laboratory tests and collection of demographic data followed by administration of questionnaires were performed on a total of 30 neurologically asymptomatic outpatients with severe CD on anti-TNFα biological therapy. RESULTS: Peripheral sensor-motor nervous function via clinical neurological examination was pathological in 36.7% and Sudoscan in 33.3% of cases. Statistically significant associations between vibration perception test and age, CD and biological therapy duration, body mass index and Crohn's Disease Activity Index were proved while statistically significant associations between temperature perception test and age and BMI were proved as well. Additionally, a decrease of total protein in a patient´s serum below the physiological cut-off in the 6 months prior to measurement was associated with a pathological result of a Sudoscan. Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy based on Ewing´s battery tests was present in 56.7% of patients, no statistically significant risk factors were found. Our peripheral neuropathy questionnaire correlated with the results of the Sudoscan test and some tests of the clinical examination of peripheral sensor-motor nervous function (discriminatory contact perception test, temperature perception test). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated a relatively high prevalence of peripheral (especially autonomic) neuropathy and verified some risk factors for the development of peripheral somatic neuropathy in asymptomatic patients with severe form of CD on anti-TNFα biological therapy.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of moxibustion and acupuncture of combined "Biao-Ben" acupoints (Biao indicates pathogenic factors of disease, Ben refers to body constitution) on a rat model of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). METHODS: Forty female SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups:normal group, model group, moxibustion group, and acupuncture group, with 10 rats in each group. The IBS-D rat model was established by administering acute-chronic stress combined with folium sennae gavage for 28 days. Rats in the moxibustion group received moxibustion at bilateral "Zusanli"(ST36), "Guanyuan"(CV4), and "Neiguan"(PC6), while those in the acupuncture group received acupuncture at the same acupoints, both for 15 min every time, once a day. The treatments were administered for 21 days. The loose stool rate was observed. Colonic pain threshold and colonic distension threshold were measured by a self-made balloon catheter. Total distance traveled and grid crossing numbers were observed by open field test. Heart rate variability(HRV) time domain indexes SDANN and PNN50 were acguired by using electrophysiological recorder. Histopathological changes in the colon tissue were observed after HE staining. Contents of interleukin-6(IL-6), IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α) in serum were detected by ELISA. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, rats in the model group showed increased loose stool rate(P<0.05), decreased pain threshold and distension threshold(P<0.05), reduced total distance traveled and grid crossing numbers in the open field test(P<0.05), decreased HRV time domain indexes SDANN and PNN50(P<0.01, P<0.05), and elevated levels of serum IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α contents(P<0.05). Compared with the model group, the moxibustion group and acupuncture group showed decreased loose stool rate(P<0.05), increased total distance traveled and grid crossing numbers in the open field test(P<0.05), increased pain threshold and distension threshold(P<0.05), increased SDANN and PNN50 (P<0.05), and decreased levels of serum IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α contents(P<0.05). Compared with the acupuncture group, the moxibustion group showed further decreased loose stool rate(P<0.05), increased total distance traveled and grid crossing numbers in the open field test(P<0.05), increased pain threshold and distension threshold(P<0.05), increased SDANN and PNN50(P<0.05), and decreased levels of serum IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α contents(P<0.05). No significant pathological changes were observed in the colon tissue of rats in each group. CONCLUSIONS: Moxibustion of combined "Biao-Ben" acupoints is more effective in regulating HRV and serum IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α contents in the IBS-D rat model. Based on the combined "Biao-Ben" acupoints method, moxibustion has better therapeutic effects on IBS-D than acupuncture.

High Ventilation Breathwork (HVB) refers to practices employing specific volitional manipulation of breathing, with a long history of use to relieve various forms of psychological distress. This paper seeks to offer a consolidative insight into potential clinical application of HVB as a treatment of psychiatric disorders. We thus review the characteristic phenomenological and neurophysiological effects of these practices to inform their mechanism of therapeutic action, safety profiles and future clinical applications. Clinical observations and data from neurophysiological studies indicate that HVB is associated with extraordinary changes in subjective experience, as well as with profound effects on central and autonomic nervous systems functions through modulation of neurometabolic parameters and interoceptive sensory systems. This growing evidence base may guide how the phenomenological effects of HVB can be understood, and potentially harnessed in the context of such volitional perturbation of psychophysiological state. Reports of putative beneficial effects for trauma-related, affective, and somatic disorders invite further research to obtain detailed mechanistic knowledge, and rigorous clinical testing of these potential therapeutic uses.
