BACKGROUND: Taste changes are commonly reported by people with cancer undergoing radio- or chemotherapy. Taste changes may compromise dietary intake and nutritional status. OBJECTIVE: To understand whether or not taste change is associated with cancer diagnosis or treatment modality in adults. METHODS: A systematic literature search up to December 31, 2019, was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and PsycInfo (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews protocol no. CRD42019134005). Studies in adults with cancer objectively assessing the effect of a cancer diagnosis or chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy treatment on taste function compared with healthy controls or within participant changes were included. Additional outcomes were food liking, appetite, dietary intake, nutritional status, and body composition. Reference lists of relevant articles were searched to identify additional articles. Quality was assessed using the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics quality criteria checklist. RESULTS: A total of 24 articles were included, one of which consisted of two studies that reported the effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy separately. From the total 25 studies reported in 24 published articles, 14 studies examined effects of radiotherapy, and remaining 11 studies examined chemotherapy. There is limited evidence of a cancer diagnosis per se contributing to taste dysfunction. Impaired taste function was reported in almost all radiotherapy studies, occurring as early as Week 3 of treatment and lasting for 3 to 24 months posttreatment. During chemotherapy, impairment of taste function was less consistently reported, occurring as early as the first few days of chemotherapy, and persisting up to 6 months posttreatment. Taxane-based chemotherapy was reported to affect taste function more than other treatments. Several studies reported reduced liking for food, appetite, and dietary intake. Only one study reported nutritional status of participants, finding no association between taste function and nutritional status. No studies examined associations between taste changes and body composition. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights the importance of considering treatment modality in practice. Research is required to identify factors contributing to taste alteration and to inform evidence-based interventions.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hypothalamic-pituitary (HT-P) dysfunction is one of the most common endocrine late effects following cranial radiotherapy. However, there are currently no specific data describing this complication in adult-onset cancer patients after whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT). The present cohort study aims to establish the prevalence of HT-P axis dysfunction in this group of patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-six cancer patients previously treated with WBRT (median follow-up=20.5 months) received standardized endocrine check-up focusing on HT-P function. RESULTS: In 50% of the patients, impaired hypothalamic-pituitary function was detected during follow-up. While functional loss of a single hormonal axis was evident in 34.6% of patients, 7.7% showed an impairment of multiple endocrine axes, and one patient developed adrenocorticotropic hormone deficiency. Hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction did not directly correlate with the applied WBRT total doses. CONCLUSION: In our cohort, hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction appeared to be common after WBRT and was diagnosed as early as 6 months following radiation. This finding highlights the need for routine endocrine follow-up even in patients with limited life expectancy.

BACKGROUND: Limited treatment options are available for oral mucositis, a common, debilitating complication of cancer therapy. We examined the association between daily delivery time of radiotherapy and the severity of oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer. METHODS: We used electronic medical records of 190 patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma who completed radiotherapy, with or without concurrent chemotherapy, at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (Buffalo, NY) between 2015 and 2017. Throughout a 7-week treatment course, patient mouth and throat soreness (MTS) was self-reported weekly using a validated oral mucositis questionnaire, with responses 0 (no) to 4 (extreme). Average treatment times from day 1 until the day before each mucositis survey were categorized into seven groups. Multivariable-adjusted marginal average scores (LSmeans) were estimated for the repeated- and maximum-MTS, using a linear-mixed model and generalized-linear model, respectively. RESULTS: Radiation treatment time was significantly associated with oral mucositis severity using both repeated-MTS (n = 1,156; P = 0.02) and maximum-MTS (n = 190; P = 0.04), with consistent patterns. The severity was lowest for patients treated during 8:30 to <9:30 am (LSmeans for maximum-MTS = 2.24; SE = 0.15), increased at later treatment times and peaked at early afternoon (11:30 am to <3:00 pm, LSmeans = 2.66-2.71; SEs = 0.16/0.17), and then decreased substantially after 3 pm. CONCLUSIONS: We report a significant association between radiation treatment time and oral mucositis severity in patients with head and neck cancer. IMPACT: Although additional studies are needed, these data suggest a potential simple treatment time solution to limit severity of oral mucositis during radiotherapy without increasing cost.

OBJECTIVE: to study the hirudotherapy efficacy in presbyacuzis praecox in clean-up workers (CUWs) of the Chornobyl disaster (ChD) during the post-accident years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From archive data of previously examined 8,136 males' CUWs we selected among them 129 persons with the determined presbyacuzis praecox during the post-accident years. According to the physical dosime- try data the individual radiation of received by CUWs during the work on a rotational scheme in the Chornobyl exclu- sion zone from the end of 1986 to 1992-1994 amounted to 0.21-0.50 Gy. The examinations were carried out using a modern standard set of audiometric, vestibulometric and electrophysiological methods. Two forms of sensory and neural hearing loss in the elderly were distinguished, namely the presbyacuzis and presbyacuzis praecox. Prior to work in the exclusion zone, patients' auditory and vestibular functions were within normal range. Among 129 patients, 68 ones with presbyacuzis praecox were included in two main age groups (aged 40-49 and 50-59 yrs) and were treated using hirudotherapy, taking into consideration their coagulation hemostasis. Other 61 patients of analogical age groups were treated by allopathotherapy. For the analysis of results obtained, techniques of variational statistics were used. RESULTS: Direct correlation (r = 0.71) between inhibitory processes in central areas of the auditory analyzer in pres- byacuzis praecox in CUWs was established by electrophysiology and by speech audiometry data obtained before the treatment. Hyperacusis signs were detected in CUWs of two main and two control groups. Following the use of two treatment schemas, a significant improving of auditory functions was found (p < 0.05) according to tone and speech audiometries. The positive hirudotherapy effect concerning hearing functions was registered in 88% cases (in 59 CUWs among 68 ones); if allopathotherapy had been used, such effect was found in 65% cases (in 45 control patients among 61 ones of control group). The duration of allopathotherapy effect reached 6-9 months comparing to 12-18 months of hiruditherapy one, being twice longer. Improving the patients' coagulation hemostasis, hirudotherapy activated cardiovascular activity favoring the increase of social adequacy in CUWs with presbyacuzis praecox. CONCLUSIONS: It has been shown that hirudotherapy as a kind of naturopathy has significant advantages over alopa- totherapy by the absence of side effects, 23.0% higher and twice as long as improvement of auditory functions. Hirudotherapy, as an effective therapeutic and recreational measures, should be more widely implemented in clini- cal practice in order to minimize the development and progression of diseases in the special population of people who have been exposed to ionizing radiation due to the Chornobyl catastrophe to continue their vitality.

Oncology treatment-related diarrhea and malnutrition appear together in oncological patients because of the disease itself, or the treatments that are administered for it. Therefore it is essential to carry out a nutritional treatment. Enteral nutrition formulas, containing peptides and medium chain triglycerides, can facilitate absorption in cases of malabsorption. There are few references to the use of enteral nutrition in the clinical society guidelines of patient management with oncology treatment-related diarrhea (OTRD). A bibliographic review of the studies with oligomeric enteral nutrition in OTRD found only nine studies with chemotherapy (all with the same oligomeric formula in which oral mucositis improves, while the rest of the outcomes show different results), and eight studies with radiotherapy (with different products and very heterogeneous results). We hereby present our action algorithm to supplement the diet of OTRD patients with an oligomeric enteral nutrition formula. The first step is the nutritional assessment, followed by the assessment of the functional capacity of the patient's intestine. With these two aspects evaluated, the therapeutic possibilities available vary in degrees of complexity: These will range from the usual dietary recommendations, to supplementation with oral oligomeric enteral nutrition, along with complete enteral nutrition with oligomeric formula, and up to potentially total parenteral nutrition.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the preventive effect of parotid gland (PG) massage for PG damage during the I therapy, we prospectively investigated the serum amylase value and salivary gland scintigraphy (SGS) after I therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred patients with thyroidectomized differentiated thyroid cancer who underwent high-dose I therapy were enrolled in the clinical trial and randomized into 2 groups (PG massage group and nonmassage group). The serum amylase value was obtained before and 24 hours after I therapy, and the SGSs were also taken just before and at 8 months after the I therapy. Change in serum amylase value and SGS was compared between PG massage and nonmassage groups. RESULTS: The difference value of serum amylase was significantly lower in PG massage group than in nonmassage group (P = 0.0052). Worsening of PG function on SGS was observed in 43 (45.3%) of the 95 patients. The incidence rate of PG abnormality on F/U SGS was significantly lower in PG massage group than in nonmassage group (odds ratio, 0.3704; P = 0.0195). In the multiple regression analysis, PG massage significantly affected the abnormality on the 8-month F/U SGS (rpartial = -0.2741, P = 0.0090) after adjusting for clinical variables (age, sex, TNM stage, TSH preparation methods for the I therapy, and I dose). CONCLUSIONS: PG gland massage significantly reduced the incidence rates of salivary gland dysfunction on the 8-month F/U SGS and the level of the serological marker of salivary gland destruction after I therapy. Therefore, PG gland massage could alleviate salivary gland damage related to I therapy.

Although radiation therapy (RT) is a feasible treatment approach for early colorectal cancer, RT is considerably toxic to normal tissues due to the increased reactive oxygen species production, which can induce tissue damage. Ginseng, a natural antioxidant agent, exhibits the protective effects against ionizing radiation (IR)-induced damage in in vitro and in vivo models. The explosive puffing of ginseng has been investigated as a process to improve the efficacy of ginseng due to the resulting physicochemical changes in its functional components. In this study, we provided the evidence for promotion in the beneficial role of puffed ginseng extract (PGE) and associated mechanisms of action, in comparison with white ginseng extract (WGE), against IR-induced colorectal injury, using in vivo study on a mouse model. To study the role of PGE in preventing IR-induced damage, we examined colorectal injury and apoptotic changes in mice exposed to 137Cs at 8 Gy. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that PGE had an increased total ginsenoside concentration with new generation of Rg3, Rg5, and Rk1, compared with the concentrations in WGE. Administering PGE, but not WGE, significantly ameliorated IR-induced colorectal cell death through negative regulation of apoptotic signaling pathways. These antiapoptotic effects of PGE were linked to the capacity to suppress the p53-mediated DNA damage response and NF-κB-mediated apoptotic signaling. Moreover, IR-induced oxidative stress in the colorectal epithelium was markedly reduced by PGE administration. Collectively, this study establishes a mechanism of action by which PGE counteracts IR-induced colorectal injury as a novel radioprotective agent.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) account for the majority of deaths worldwide. Radiation-induced heart diseases (RIHD) is one of the side effects following exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). Exposure could be from various forms such as diagnostic imaging, radiotherapy for cancer treatment, as well as nuclear disasters and nuclear accidents. RIHD is mostly observed after radiotherapy for thoracic malignancies, especially left breast cancer. RIHD may affect the supply of blood to heart muscles, leading to an increase in the risk of heart attacks to irradiated persons. Due to its dose-limiting consequence, RIHD has a negative effect on the therapeutic efficacy of radiotherapy. Several methods have been proposed for protection against RIHD. In this paper, we review the use of natural products, which have shown promising results for protection against RIHD.

AIM: To investigate the role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the management of patients with radiation induced urinary bladder injury (radiation cystitis). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 23 patients with late radiation induced urinary bladder injury who were evaluated and treated using hyperbaric oxygen therapy and bladder instillation. Before and after treatment, all patients underwent cystoscopy with the bladder mucosa biopsy. - RESULTS: In all patients, the treatment resulted in positive outcomes manifested by resolution of hematuria, alleviation of dysuria, decrease in urination frequency to 6.5 +/- 0.5 times a day, increase the bladder capacity, which ultimately improved patients the quality of life. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was well tolerated, there were no adverse effects. Morphological studies confirmed positive clinical changes following hyperbaric oxygen therapy. CONCLUSION: The study findings support wider use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the management of radiation cystitis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to present long-term results of mandibular growth in pediatric parotid gland carcinoma survivors treated with interstitial brachytherapy. PROCEDURE: Twenty-five survivors of pediatric parotid gland carcinoma treated with iodine-125 seed interstitial brachytherapy were included for quantitative analysis, including three dimensional (3D) cephalometry and measurement of mandibular volume. RESULTS: 3D cephalometry showed that the median fore-and-aft increments of the lengths of the condyle, the ramus, and the body of the mandible were 1.23, 0.19, and 1.66 mm for the affected side, respectively, and were 1.37, 1.95, and 3.42 mm for the unaffected side, respectively. The difference in increments of the ramus was statistically significant between the affected side and the unaffected side (P = 0.003; P < 0.05). Moreover, mandibular volume measurements showed that the median fore-and-aft increments of the volumes of the condyle, the ramus, and the body of the mandible were 290.62, 220.14, and 1706.40 mm3 for the affected side, respectively, and were 269.15, 370.40, and 1469.86 mm3 for the unaffected side, respectively. The difference in increments was statistically significant between the affected side and the unaffected side for the ramus (P = 0.005; P < 0.05) and the body (P = 0.043; P < .05). CONCLUSION: Mandibular growth was affected by interstitial brachytherapy, especially for the ramus, in pediatric parotid gland carcinoma survivors treated with interstitial brachytherapy. Nevertheless, the impact was mild in these survivors.

Purpose Assess the effectiveness of an orofacial myofunctional therapeutic program in patients with oral or oropharyngeal cancer submitted to adjuvant radiotherapy through pre- and post-program comparison of maximum mandibular opening. Methods Prospective study involving five adult patients and five elderly patients postoperatively to oral cavity/oropharynx surgery who were awaiting the beginning of radiotherapy or had undergone fewer than five treatment sessions. The study participants had their maximum jaw opening measured using a sliding caliper at the beginning and end of the program. Two mobility exercises and three mandibular traction exercises were selected and weekly monitored presentially for 10 weeks. Descriptive data and pre- and post-therapy comparative measures were statistically analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results Ten patients (two women and eight men) with mean age of 58.4 years, median of 57.0 years, completed the therapeutic program. They presented mean maximum mandibular opening of 31.6 ± 11.7 and 36.4 ± 8.0 mm pre- and post-therapy, respectively (p =0.021). Conclusion The proposed orofacial myofunctional therapeutic program increased the maximum jaw opening of patients referred to adjuvant radiotherapy for oral cavity or oropharynx cancer treatment.

National space agencies and private corporations aim at an extended presence of humans in space in the medium to long term. Together with currently suboptimal technology, microgravity and cosmic rays raise health concerns about deep-space exploration missions. Both of these physical factors affect the cardiovascular system, whose gravity-dependence is pronounced. Heart and vascular function are, therefore, susceptible to substantial changes in weightlessness. The altered cardiovascular function in space causes physiological problems in the postflight period. A compromised cardiovascular system can be excessively vulnerable to space radiation, synergistically resulting in increased damage. The space radiation dose is significantly lower than in patients undergoing radiotherapy, in whom cardiac damage is well-documented following cancer therapy in the thoracic region. Nevertheless, epidemiological findings suggest an increased risk of late cardiovascular disease even with low doses of radiation. Moreover, the peculiar biological effectiveness of heavy ions in cosmic rays might increase this risk substantially. However, whether radiation-induced cardiovascular effects have a threshold at low doses is still unclear. The main countermeasures to mitigate the effect of the space environment on cardiac function are physical exercise, antioxidants, nutraceuticals, and radiation shielding.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar, por meio da comparação entre a abertura máxima mandibular, a efetividade de programa terapêutico miofuncional oral em pacientes com câncer de boca ou orofaringe submetidos à radioterapia adjuvante. Método Estudo prospectivo envolvendo cinco pacientes adultos e cinco idosos em pós-operatório de cirurgia de boca/orofaringe que aguardavam início da radioterapia ou até a quinta sessão. No início e no final do programa, os participantes tiveram suas medidas de abertura máxima mandibular mensuradas por meio de paquímetro e foram selecionados cinco exercícios - dois de mobilidade e três de tração mandibular - com controle presencial durante oito semanas, perfazendo um total de dez semanas. Dados descritivos e a comparação das medidas pré e pós-fonoterapia por meio do teste de Wilcoxon foram considerados na análise dos dados. Resultados Dez pacientes finalizaram o programa terapêutico (duas mulheres e oito homens), com média de idade de 58,4 anos, mediana de 57,0 anos. Apresentaram média de abertura máxima mandibular de 31,6 ± 11,7 mm antes do tratamento e 36,4 ± 8,0 mm no pós-terapia (p=0,021). Conclusão O programa terapêutico miofuncional oral proposto promoveu aumento da abertura máxima vertical da mandíbula de pacientes submetidos à radioterapia e/ou quimioterapia adjuvante para tratamento de câncer de boca e orofaringe.


ABSTRACT Purpose Assess the effectiveness of an orofacial myofunctional therapeutic program in patients with oral or oropharyngeal cancer submitted to adjuvant radiotherapy through pre- and post-program comparison of maximum mandibular opening. Methods Prospective study involving five adult patients and five elderly patients postoperatively to oral cavity/oropharynx surgery who were awaiting the beginning of radiotherapy or had undergone fewer than five treatment sessions. The study participants had their maximum jaw opening measured using a sliding caliper at the beginning and end of the program. Two mobility exercises and three mandibular traction exercises were selected and weekly monitored presentially for 10 weeks. Descriptive data and pre- and post-therapy comparative measures were statistically analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results Ten patients (two women and eight men) with mean age of 58.4 years, median of 57.0 years, completed the therapeutic program. They presented mean maximum mandibular opening of 31.6 ± 11.7 and 36.4 ± 8.0 mm pre- and post-therapy, respectively (p =0.021). Conclusion The proposed orofacial myofunctional therapeutic program increased the maximum jaw opening of patients referred to adjuvant radiotherapy for oral cavity or oropharynx cancer treatment.

Astronauts are exposed to charged particles during space travel, and charged particles are also used for cancer radiotherapy. Premature ovarian failure is a well-known side effect of conventional, low linear energy transfer (LET) cancer radiotherapy, but little is known about the effects of high LET charged particles on the ovary. We hypothesized that lower LET (16.5 keV/µm) oxygen particles would be less damaging to the ovary than we previously found for iron (LET = 179 keV/µm). Adult female mice were irradiated with 0, 5, 30 or 50 cGy oxygen ions or 50 cGy oxygen plus dietary supplementation with the antioxidant alpha lipoic acid (ALA). Six-hour after irradiation, percentages of ovarian follicles immunopositive for γH2AX, a marker of DNA double strand breaks, 4-HNE, a marker of oxidative lipid damage and BBC3 (PUMA), a proapoptotic BCL-2 family protein, were dose dependently increased in irradiated mice compared to controls. One week after irradiation, numbers of primordial, primary and secondary follicles per ovary were dose dependently decreased, with complete absence of follicles in the 50 cGy groups. The ED50 for primordial follicle destruction was 4.6 cGy for oxygen compared to 27.5 cGy for iron in our previous study. Serum FSH and LH concentrations were significantly elevated in 50 cGy groups at 8 week. Supplementation with ALA mitigated the early effects, but not the ultimate depletion of ovarian follicles. In conclusion, oxygen charged particles are even more potent inducers of ovarian follicle depletion than charged iron particles, raising concern for premature ovarian failure in astronauts exposed to both particles during space travel.

Cognitive impairments after brain irradiation seriously affect quality of life for patients, and there is currently no effective treatment. In this study using an irradiated rat model, the role of electroacupuncture was investigated for treatment of radiation-induced brain injury. Animals received 10 Gy exposure to the entire brain, and electroacupuncture was administered 3 days before irradiation as well as up to 2 weeks postirradiation. Behavioral tests were performed one month postirradiation, and rats were then sacrificed for histology or molecular studies. Electroacupuncture markedly improved animal performance in the novel place recognition test. In the emotion test, electroacupuncture reduced defecation during the open-field test, and latency to consumption of food in the novelty suppressed feeding test. Brain irradiation inhibited the generation of immature neurons, but did not cause neural stem cell loss. Electroacupuncture partially restored hippocampal neurogenesis. Electroacupuncture decreased the amount of activated microglia and increased resting microglia in the hippocampus after irradiation. In addition, electroacupuncture promoted mRNA and protein expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus. In conclusion, electroacupuncture could improve cognitive function and hippocampal neurogenesis after irradiation, and the protective effect of electroacupuncture was associated with the modulation of microglia and upregulation of BDNF in the hippocampus.

Exposure of the heart to ionizing radiation can cause adverse myocardial remodeling. In small animal models, local heart irradiation causes persistent alterations in cardiac mitochondrial function and swelling. POLY-MVA is a dietary supplement that contains a palladium lipoic acid complex that targets mitochondrial complex I and has been demonstrated to have greater redox potential than lipoic acid alone. POLY-MVA improves mitochondrial function and anti-oxidant enzyme activity in the aged rat heart. In this study, we tested whether POLY-MVA can mitigate cardiac effects of ionizing radiation. Adult male rats were exposed to local heart X rays with a daily dose of 9 Gy for 5 consecutive days. Eighteen weeks after irradiation, POLY-MVA was administered orally at 1 ml/kg bodyweight per day during weekdays, for 6 weeks. Alterations in cardiac function as measured with echocardiography coincided with enhanced mitochondrial swelling, a reduction in mitochondrial expression of complex II, manifestations of adverse remodeling such as a reduction in myocardial microvessel density and an increase in collagen deposition and mast cell numbers. POLY-MVA enhanced left ventricular expression of superoxide dismutase 2, but only in sham-irradiated animals. In irradiated animals, POLY-MVA caused a reduction in markers of inflammatory infiltration, CD2 and CD68. Moreover, POLY-MVA mitigated the effects of radiation on mitochondria. Nonetheless, POLY-MVA did not mitigate adverse cardiac remodeling, suggesting that this tissue remodeling may not be alleviated by altering cardiac mitochondria alone. However, we cannot exclude the possibility that an earlier onset of POLY-MVA administration may have more profound effects on radiation-induced cardiac remodeling.

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of oral glutamine (Gln) supplementation on clinical and survival outcomes of patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC). MATERIALS/METHODS: Between 2010 and 2014, 122 stage III NSCLC patients were retrospectively analyzed. All patients received curative intent chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Prophylactic oral Gln powder was applied at a dose of 10 g tid. Effect of oral Gln supplementation in the prevention of severe (≥grade 2-3) acute radiation-induced esophagitis (ARE) and weight loss, and their relation with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) was measured. RESULTS: Median follow-up was 13.14 months (range; 1.97-55.36). Fifty-six (46%) patients had received oral Gln. Severe ARE was significantly lower in Gln-supplemented group (30% vs 70%; p = 0.002). Gln-free patients demonstrated a higher weight loss (p = 0.0001). In multivariate analysis hemoglobin (hb) level (<12 g/dL; p = 0.01) and nodal stage (N3; p = 0.01) were poor prognostic factors that affect OS; Weight loss (p = 0.06) and Gln-free (p = 0.05) reached nearly significant levels that poorly affect OS. Similarly, nodal stage (N3, p = 0.014) and Gln-free (p = 0.035) were poor prognostic factors that affect DFS. Weight loss (≥2%, p = 0.06) and hb level (<12 g/dL, p = 0.07) reached borderline significance that poorly affect DFS. Nodal stage (N3) was the only poor prognostic factor that affect OS and DFS in univariate analysis (p = 0.01, p = 0.009; respectively). CONCLUSION: Oral Gln supplementation significantly reduces grade 2-3 esophagitis and weight loss and also no negative impact on tumor control and survival outcomes in patients with LA-NSCLC.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of radioactive iodine ablation therapy on voice quality of patients diagnosed with well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma. METHODS: We enrolled 36 patients who underwent total or subtotal thyroidectomy due to well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Voice recordings from patients were analyzed for acoustic and aerodynamic voice. The Voice Handicap Index-10 was used for subjective analysis. The control group consisted of 36 healthy participants. Results taken before and after therapy were compared statistically. RESULTS: There were no differences in the results taken before and after therapy for the radioactive iodine ablation group. The Voice Handicap Index-10 results did not differ between groups before and after therapy. CONCLUSION: Radioactive iodine ablation therapy has no effect on voice quality objectively or subjectively.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines patient reported outcome measures of women undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) after breast-conserving therapy. METHOD: Included were 57 women treated with HBOT for late radiation-induced tissue toxicity (LRITT) referred in the period January 2014-December 2015. HBOT consisted of (on average) 47 sessions. In total, 80 min of 100 % O2 was administered under increased pressure of 2.4 ATA. Quality of life was assessed before and after treatment using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-BR23, and a NRS pain score. RESULTS: Fifty-seven women were available for evaluation before and after treatment. Before HBOT, patients had severe complaints of pain in the arm/shoulder (46 %), swollen arm/hand (14 %), difficulty to raise arm or move it sideways (45 %), pain in the area of the affected breast (67 %), swollen area of the affected breast (45 %), oversensitivity of the affected breast (54 %), and skin problems on/in the area of the affected breast (32 %); post HBOT, severe complaints were still experienced in 17, 7, 22, 15, 13, 15, and 11 % of the women, respectively. Differences were all significant. The NRS pain score improved at least 1 point (range 0-10) in 81 % of the patients (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In these breast cancer patients treated with HBOT for LRITT, the patient-reported outcomes were positive and improvements were observed. HBOT was a well-tolerated treatment for LRITT and its side-effects were both minimal and reversible.

AIMS: Radiation-induced heart damage (RIHD) is becoming an increasing concern for patients and clinicians due to the use of radiotherapy for thoracic tumor. Chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (CIHH) preconditioning has been documented to exert a cardioprotective effect. Here we hypothesized that CIHH was capable of attenuating functional and structural damage in a rat model of RIHD. MAIN METHODS: Male adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: control, radiation, CIHH and CIHH plus radiation. Cardiac function was measured using Langendorff perfusion in in vitro rat hearts. Cardiac fibrosis, oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) was assessed by quantitative analysis of protein expression. KEY FINDINGS: No significant difference between any two groups was observed in baseline cardiac function as assessed by left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP), left ventricular developing pressure (LVDP) and the derivative of left ventricular pressure (±LVdp/dt). When challenged by ischemia/reperfusion, LVEDP was increased but LVDP and ±LVdp/dt was decreased significantly in radiation group compared with controls, accompanied by an enlarged infarct size and decreased coronary flow. Importantly, CIHH dramatically improved radiation-induced damage of cardiac function and blunted radiation-induced cardiac fibrosis in the perivascular and interstitial area. Furthermore, CIHH abrogated radiation-induced increase in malondialdehyde and enhanced total superoxide dismutase activity, as well as downregulated expression levels of ERS markers like GRP78 and CHOP. SIGNIFICANCE: CIHH pretreatment alleviated radiation-induced damage of cardiac function and fibrosis. Such a protective effect was closely associated with suppression of oxidative stress and ERS responses.
