RESUMEN

The use of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) in aquaculture has been increasing gradually over the past few years. SeNPs enhance immunity, are highly effective against pathogens, and have low toxicity. In this study, SeNPs were prepared using polysaccharide-protein complexes (PSP) from abalone viscera. The acute toxicity of PSP-SeNPs to juvenile Nile tilapia and their effect on growth performance, intestinal tissue structure, antioxidation capacity, hypoxic stress, and Streptococcus agalactiae infection were investigated. The results showed that the spherical PSP-SeNPs were stable and safe, with an LC50 of 13.645 mg/L against tilapia, which was about 13-fold higher than that of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3). A basal diet supplemented with 0.1-1.5 mg/kg PSP-SeNPs improved the growth performance of tilapia juveniles to a certain extent, increased the intestinal villus length, and significantly enhanced the activities of liver antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and catalase (CAT). PSP-SeNPs also enhanced the resistance of tilapia to hypoxic stress and Streptococcus agalactiae infection, with supplementation at 0.1-0.3 mg/kg exerting more obvious effects than 1.5 mg/kg. However, PSP-SeNPs at a concentration of 4.5 mg/kg and Na2SeO3 at 0.3 mg/kg negatively affected the growth, gut health, and the activity of the antioxidant enzymes of tilapia. Quadric polynomial regression analysis revealed that 0.1-1.2 mg/kg was the optimal PSP-SeNP supplementation concentration for tilapia feeds. The findings of this study lay a foundation for the application of PSP-SeNPs in aquaculture.

RESUMEN

Restriction of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in Indonesia reduces broiler production due to bacterial diseases. Some poultry farmers have attempted to replace AGP with phytogenic compounds, such as tannin as an in-feed additive. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the effects of tannin administration on the production performance, viscera weight, and lipoprotein levels of tropically-raised broiler chickens. Cobb Strain broiler chicks aged one day were used in an experiment with a completely random design, three treatments, and four replicate pens, each containing nine birds. Three dietary treatments were assigned to the birds: basal diet (negative control), basal diet+0.03% Zn Bacitracyn (positive control), and basal diet+0.05% tannin for the starter phase of 1-21 days and the grower phase of 22-42 days, respectively. Tannin supplementation significantly increased the feed conversion ratio in all phases relative to the control group. Tannin supplementation in the diet significantly reduced daily feed intake during the grower phase, final body weight, carcass weight, intestine weight, liver weight, and total visceral weight, compared to the control group. Tannin had lower levels of aspartate aminotransferase but higher levels of low-density lipoprotein and alanine aminotransferase. Tannin addition in broiler diets might not improve growth performance and health. Therefore, it is not suggested as a substitute for AGPs in broiler diets.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Autotransfusion (AT) in trauma laparotomy is limited by concern that enteric contamination (EC) increases complications, including infections. Our goal was to determine if AT use increases complications in trauma patients undergoing laparotomy with EC. METHODS: Trauma patients undergoing laparotomy from October 2011-November 2020 were reviewed. Patients were excluded if they did not receive blood in the operating room, did not have a full thickness hollow viscus injury, or died <24 h from admission. AT and non-AT patients were matched. Outcomes were compared. RESULTS: 185 patients were included, 60 received AT, and 46 pairs were matched. After matching, demographics were similar. No differences were noted in septic complications (33 vs 41%, p = 0.39), overall complications (59% vs 54%, p = 0.67), or mortality (13 vs 6%, p = 0.29). CONCLUSIONS: AT use in contaminated trauma laparotomy fields was not associated with a higher rate of complications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Warm-antibody AIHA is known to complicate solid organ (SOT) and HSCT, the disease maybe refractory to standard therapy. Immunosuppressive therapies as well as IVIG, and rituximab have been the main stay of treatment. Over the past decade, B-lymphocyte targeted, anti-CD-20 antibody has been recognized in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and utilized in AIHA. Bortezomib, a proteasome inhibitor that causes apoptosis of plasma cells, is an appealing targeted therapy in secondary AIHA and has demonstrated efficacy in HSCT patients. From our experience, we advocate for early targeted therapy that combines B cell with plasma cell depletion. CASE REPORT: We describe a 4-year-old-girl with stage III neuroblastoma, complicated with intestinal necrosis needing multivisceral transplant developed warm AIHA 1-year after transplantation, and following an adenovirus infection. She received immunoglobulin therapy, rituximab, sirolimus, plasmapheresis, and long-term prednisolone with no sustained benefit while developing spinal fractures related to the latter therapy. She received bortezomib for intractable AIHA in combination with rituximab with no appreciable adverse effects. Three years later the child remains in remission with normal reticulocyte and recovered B cells. In the interim, she required chelation therapy for iron overload related to blood transfusion requirement during the treatment of AIHA. CONCLUSION: We propose early targeted anti-plasma cell therapy with steroid burst, IVIG, rituximab, and possible plasmapheresis may reduce morbidity in secondary refractory w-AIHA.

RESUMEN

This study elucidated the function role of dietary selenium-enriched yeast (SeY) supplementation on growth performance, immune function, and antioxidant capacity in weaned pigs exposure to oxidative stress. Thirty-two similarity weight pigs were randomly divided into four treatments: (1) nonchallenged control, (2) control+SeY, (3) control+diquat, and (4) control+SeY+diquat. The period of experiment was 21 days; on day 16, pigs were injected with diquat or sterile saline. Results revealed that oxidative stress was notably detrimental to the growth performance of piglets, but SeY supplementation ameliorated this phenomenon, which might be regarding the increasing of body antioxidant capacity and immune functions. In details, SeY supplementation improved the digestibility of crude protein (CP), ash, and gross energy (GE). Moreover, the serum concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6), glutamic-pyruvic transaminase(GPT), and glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) were reduced via SeY supplemented, and serum concentrations of immunoglobulins A (IgA), IgG, and activities of antioxidant enzymes such as the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) ,and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were improved in the diquat-challenged pigs (P < 0.05). In addition, SeY supplementation acutely enhanced the activities of these antioxidant enzymes in the liver and thymus upon diquat challenge, which involved with the upregulation of the critical genes related antioxidant signaling such as the nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-related factor 2 (Nrf-2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) (P < 0.05). Importantly, we also found that SeY supplementation apparently reduced the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations in the liver, thymus, and serum (P < 0.05). Specifically, the expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) in the liver and thymus were downregulated by SeY upon diquat challenge. These results suggested that SeY can attenuate oxidative stress-induced growth retardation, which was associated with elevating body antioxidant capacity, immune functions, and suppressed inflammatory response.

RESUMEN

This study reports on the purification and characterization of a digestive α-amylase from blue crab (Portunussegnis) viscera designated Blue Crab Amylase (BCA). The enzyme was purified to homogeneity by ultrafiltration, Sephadex G-100 gel filtration and Sepharose mono Q anion exchange chromatography, with the final purification fold of 424.02, specific activity of 1390.8 U mg-1 and 27.8% recovery. BCA, showing a molecular weight of approximately 45 kDa, possesses desirable biotechnological features, such as optimal temperature of 50 °C, interesting thermal stability which is enhanced in the presence of starch, high stability towards surfactants (Tween 20, Tween 80 and Triton X-100), high specific activity, quite high storage and broad pH range stability. The enzyme displayed Km and Vmax values, of 7.5 ± 0.25 mg mL-1 and 2000 ± 23 µmol min-1 mg-1 for potato starch, respectively. It hydrolyzed various carbohydrates and produced maltose, maltotriose and maltotetraose as the major end products of starch hydrolysis. In addition, the purified enzyme was successfully utilized for the improvement of the antioxidant potential of oat flour, which could be extended to other cereals. Interestingly, besides its suitability for application in different industrial sectors, especially food industries, the biochemical properties of BCA from the blue crab viscera provide novel features with other marine-derived enzymes and better understanding of the biodegradability of carbohydrates in marine environments, particularly in invasive alien crustaceans.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is effective in symptom and quality of life improvement of chronic asthma, but the efficacy differences between different acupoints are uncertain. In terms of the theory of Meridian-viscera Association, the study aims to investigate the different effectiveness between acupoints in Lung meridian and the acupoints in Heart meridian, so as to provide the evidence to develop a better prescription of the acupuncture treatment of chronic persistent asthma. METHODS: This study is a multicentral randomized controlled trial. A total of 68 chronic persistent asthma patients will be randomly allocated into two groups: the Lung meridian group and the Heart meridian group. This trial will include a 2-week baseline period, a 4-week treatment period with 12 sessions' acupuncture, and an 8-week follow-up period. The primary outcome is the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ). Secondary outcomes are the Asthma Control Test (ACT), Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF), and Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 s (FEV1). The AQLQ and ACT will be collected at baseline, week 4, week 8, and week 12 after randomization. PEF, FEV1, the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) will be assessed at baseline and week 4. DISCUSSION: The results will provide evidence for acupuncture prescription selection and the clinical efficacy improvement. The results of this trial will also be used to determine whether or not a full definitive trial will go ahead, which will further confirm the theory of Meridian-viscera Association. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes is an intermediate metabolic state between normoglycemia and diabetes. Without intervention, prediabetes often progresses to diabetes and prediabetes is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, renal disease, and dementia. Lifestyle modification play a major role in controlling prediabetes. But lifestyle interventions are often with poor compliance and side effects of drugs are often be dislike by people. As a non-invasive therapy with no side effects, abdominal massage (AM), also called viscera massage in China, has been used to treat prediabetes and obesity-associated diseases. The gut microbiota has been recognized as an important factor in the development of metabolic diseases. Individuals with prediabetes have aberrant intestinal microbiota character. Colonic transport time and stool consistency are strongly associated with gut microbiota. Viscera massage can ease constipation by reducing colonic transport time and promoting intestinal motility. We can infer that viscera massage can modulate composition of gut microbiota affects human metabolism. So, in this trial, we will explore the mechanism of viscera massage on prediabetes from the perspective of intestinal microbiota. METHODS AND DESIGN: Eighty prediabetes individuals will be recruited for this study. Eighty prediabetes individuals will be divided into lifestyle intervention group and viscera massage + lifestyle intervention group by a simple random method. Each group will have 40 individuals. The manipulation of the viscera massage + lifestyle intervention group will be mainly carried out through rubbing the abdomen, kneading abdomen, vibrating abdomen, and pressing the abdomen, 30 minutes per time, once a day, with 2 days off every 5 days. Lifestyle interventions will be performed by combining pushing healthy lifestyle guidance information through Wechat application and giving face-to-face advice together daily. The lifestyle intervention group will receive healthy lifestyle intervention only. All the intervention will be conducted for 4 weeks. Weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio will be measured at the last day of every week. Triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting blood-glucose, 2-hour post-meal blood glucose (2hPG) and glycosylated hemoglobin, fasting insulin and insulin resistance index will be tested at the first day and last day of the intervention course. The fecal samples of subjects will be gathered at the first day and last day of the intervention course and will be performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomic detection. Finally, the effect and potential mechanism of viscera massage on prediabetes will be discussed in combination with all the results. DISCUSSION: The results of this study will be used to verify the effect of AM on prediabetes and explore the mechanism of AM on prediabetes from the perspective of gut microbiota.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has long been used to treat chronic stable angina pectoris (CSAP), but the acupuncture prescription for CSAP varies. This trial will compare the therapeutic effects between the acupoints on the Heart Meridian and the acupoints on the Lung Meridian for treating CSAP, so as to provide a better prescription for acupuncture treatment of CSAP. METHODS: This is a multicenter randomized controlled trial. A total of 148 CSAP patients will be randomly allocated into two groups through central randomization in a 1:1 ratio. This trial will include a 2-week screening period, a 4-week treatment period, and a 4-week follow-up period. The primary outcome is the frequency of angina attacks from baseline to 4 weeks after inclusion. Secondary outcomes include the frequency of angina attacks from baseline to 4 weeks after acupuncture treatment, the pain intensity of angina, total ischemia burden, heart rate variability, QT dispersion, the score of Seattle Angina Questionnaire, and the score of Short-Form of McGill Pain Questionnaire. These outcome measures will be evaluated at baseline, at the end of acupuncture treatment, and at the end of follow-up. DISCUSSION: We hypothesize that the effectiveness of puncturing at acupoints on the Heart Meridian will not be the same as those on the Lung Meridian. The results will provide further evidence of Meridian-Viscera Association theory and references for acupoints selection in the clinical practice. RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy difference of electroacupuncture at lower he-sea point and he-sea matching front-mu points for the treatment of gastroparesis. METHODS: A total of 63 patients with gastroparesis were randomly divided into a lower he point group (group A, 32 cases, 2 cases dropped off) and a he matching mu points group (group B, 31 cases, 1 case dropped off). The group A was treated with electroacupuncture at Zusanli (ST 36), and the group B was treated with electroacupuncture at Zusanli (ST 36) and Zhongwan (CV 12). Both groups were treated with continuous wave (2 Hz in frequency) for 30 min, once a day, 5 times a week for 3 weeks. The gastroparesis cardinal symptom index (GCSI) score, gastric half-emptying time (T1/2) and the 180 min gastric residual rate of the two groups before and after treatment were observed, and the clinical effective rate was compared. RESULTS: After treatment, the total GCSI scores, T1/2 and the 180 min gastric residual rates in both groups were lower than those before treatment (P<0.01), and the 180 min gastric residual rate and T1/2 in the group A were lower than those in the group B (P<0.05). The total effective rate was 93.3% (28/30) in the group A, which was superior to 70.0% (21/30) in the group B (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture at lower he-sea point and he-sea matching front-mu points can both be used to treat gastroparesis, but electroacupuncture at Zusanli (ST 36) has a better effect. The acupoints of Zusanli (ST 36) and Zhongwan (CV 12) may have antagonistic effects.

RESUMEN

With the discussion on the origins and the evolution of Star Twelve Points, combined with ancient astronomical stellar map, it is realized that the three-dimensional spatial diagram of Star Twelve Points can be approximately regarded as a Big Dipper map from the side view. Under the direction of image thinking, the function of Big Dipper was compared with the function of Star Twelve Points. Furthermore, according to "the opening-closing-pivoting" theory in The Inner Canon of Huangdi and the theory of "qi cycle in round" proposed by HUANG Yuan-yu, the mechanisms of Star Twelve Points on adjusting functional activities of qi and the movement of viscera-meridian-qi-blood is elaborated, providing a new idea for acupuncture clinical treatment of miscellaneous diseases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The primo vascular system (PVS) is a novel network composed of primo nodes (PNs) and primo vessels (PVs). Currently, its anatomy is not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to elucidate the three-dimensional PN-PV structure. METHODS: Organ-surface PVS tissue was isolated from healthy and anemic rats. The tissues were analyzed by X-ray microcomputed tomography (CT), hematoxylin and eosin staining, and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: From CT images, we identified one or more bundles in a PV. In the PN, the bundles were enlarged and existed in isolation and/or in anastomosis. The transverse CT images revealed four areas of distinct intensities: zero, low, intermediate, and high. The first two were considered to be the sinuses and the subvessels of the PVS and were identified in the hematoxylin and eosin-stained PN sections. The enlargement of the PN from anemic rats was associated with an increase in the intermediate-intensity area. The high-intensity area demarcated the bundle and was overlapped with the mesothelial cells. In scanning electron microscopy, the PV bundles branched out, tapering down to a single bundle at some distance from the PN. Each bundle was composed of several subvessels (∼5 µm). Clustered round microcells (1-25 µm), scattered flat oval cells (∼15 µm), and amorphous extracellular matrix were observed on the surface of the PVS tissue. CONCLUSIONS: The results newly showed that the primo bundle is a structural unit of both PVs and PNs. A bundle was demarcated by high CT intensity and mesothelial cells and consisted of multiple subvessels. The PN bundles contained also sinuses.

RESUMEN

Thirty five barrows (initial body weight [BW]: 15.1 ± 1.0 kg) were used to determine the effect of partially replacing Gly + Ser with Thr in reduced crude protein (CP) diets on growth performance, protein deposition in carcass and viscera, and skin collagen abundance during the late nursery phase to 25 kg BW. Pigs were individually fed one of five iso-nitrogenous diets (n = 7) for 21 d. The basal diet met estimated essential amino acids (AA) requirements by using all essential AA plus Gly and Ser in free form (CON; 12.1% CP; as-fed, analyzed contents). The remaining four diets were formulated by reducing total Gly and Ser concentrations to 60% or 20% of the CON diet. The N removed with Gly and Ser was replaced with either crystalline Thr or Glu. Total analyzed Thr made up either 1.59% (T1; 12.5% CP) or 2.34% (T2; 12.2% CP) of the Thr-supplemented diets, and total analyzed Glu made up either 3.47% (G1; 12.7% CP) or 4.64% (G2; 12.9% CP) of the Glu-supplemented diets. Pigs were slaughtered on day 21 to determine body composition and skin collagen abundance via bright field microscopy. Overall, average daily gain (ADG) and G:F and final carcass weights were greater for pigs fed diets supplemented with Glu (G1 + G2) vs. those fed diets supplemented with Thr (T1 + T2; P < 0.05, P = 0.060, and P = 0.050 for ADG, G:F, and final carcass weight, respectively); intermediate values were observed for CON. Nitrogen retention in carcass plus viscera and the AA profile of deposited protein in the carcass were not influenced by dietary treatment. Pigs fed the T2 and G2 diets had greater retention of Thr (vs. CON and G2) and Glu (vs. CON and T2) in the viscera protein, respectively (P < 0.05). The apparent utilization efficiency of standardized ileal digestible Thr for protein deposition in carcass plus viscera was less for pigs fed T2 (15.1%) vs. those fed CON (56.7%) or G2 (58.6% ± 2.9%) diets (P < 0.001). Only pigs fed T1 had skin collagen abundance not different from CON; pigs fed G1, G2, and T2 had reduced skin collagen abundance compared with CON and T1 (P < 0.01). Using Glu as an N source when Gly and Ser were reduced to 60% and 20% of CON in reduced CP diets maintained ADG for pigs between 15 and 25 kg BW, whereas supplying Thr as a N source reduced ADG and carcass weight. When dietary Gly and Ser were supplied at 60% of CON, only Thr supplementation rescued skin collagen abundance. Therefore, supplemental Thr at excess levels is not sufficient to replace N from Gly and Ser in reduced CP diets fed to late nursery pigs, despite supporting skin collagen abundance as a secondary indicator of Gly status.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the underlying mechanism of action of Tongxieyaofang decoction in rats with visceral hypersensitivity using proteomics technology. METHODS: Twenty-four female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: control group, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) group and Tongxieyaofang treatment group. An IBS model, characterized as visceral hypersensitivity, was established using the odour of mothballs as conditional stimulation and colorectal distension combined with classic physical restraint as non-conditional stimulation. Rats were intragastrically treated with Tongxieyaofang (2 or 4 mL·kg-1·d-1) for 4 weeks. On the 45th day, the rats were dissected and the colonic mucosal proteins were extracted. Differential protein spots were screened by fluorescent two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE), and identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Western blotting experiments were performed to verify the changes observed in 2D-DIGE and MALDI-TOF-MS. RESULTS: It was found that the visceral sensitivity of rats in the Tongxieyaofang treatment group (4 mL/kg) was lower than that in the IBS group (P < 0.01). Sixty-one protein spots were differentially expressed between the IBS group and the Tongxieyaofang treatment group. Of these, 23 spots were upregulated in the Tongxieyaofang treatment group, while 38 spots were downregulated. Three specific proteins were successfully identified from the five protein spots with the most obvious changes. The two upregulated proteins were transgelin (TAGLN) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (Aldh2) and the downregulated protein was cytokeratin 8 (CK8). CONCLUSION: Tongxieyaofang can dose-dependently ameliorate visceral hypersensitivity in rats and the mechanism of action may involve the upregulation of TAGLN and Aldh2 and the downregulation of CK8.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The usefulness of sericin as pleurodesis agent has previously been described. Present study aims to compare sericin pleurodesis regarding success, effectiveness, tolerability, and side-effects. METHODS: Adult, 12-week-old Wistar-albino rats (n=60), divided to five groups as sericin, talcum-powder, doxycycline, silver-nitrate and control. Agents were administrated through left thoracotomy, rats sacrificed twelve-days after. RESULTS: Highest ratio of collagen fibers was observed in sericin group, and the intensity was higher than talcum-powder group (p<0.05). Compared to silver nitrate, sericin group displayed better mesothelial reaction, and multi-layer mesothelium was also better (p<0.05). Foreign body reaction and emphysema were less frequent in sericin group (p<0.05). The presence of biological tissue in parenchyma was less prominent in sericin group (p<0.05). Foreign body reaction on thoracic wall was less common in sericin group (p<0.05). Presence of biological tissue glue in thoracic wall was less prominent in sericin group (p<0.05). Glomerular degeneration was lower in sericin group compared to the silver nitrate group (p<0.05), and tubular degeneration was less common in sericin group than talcum group (p<0.05). Pericarditis was less common in sericin group compared to the other groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: As an intrinsic, natural glue protein, sericin protects the lung parenchyma and tissues, and its glue-like characteristics enable pleurodesis. The success of sericin in pleurodesis was demonstrated in the present study based on investigations of the pleurae. Being cost-effective and better tolerated agent associated with a low potential of side effects, sericin is more effective, less expensive and provides more lung parenchyma protection.

RESUMEN

Sea cucumbers are an important ingredient of traditional folk medicine in many Asian countries, which are well-known for their medicinal, nutraceutical, and food values due to producing an impressive range of distinctive natural bioactive compounds. Triterpene glycosides are the most abundant and prime secondary metabolites reported in this species. They possess numerous biological activities ranging from anti-tumour, wound healing, hypolipidemia, pain relieving, the improvement of nonalcoholic fatty livers, anti-hyperuricemia, the induction of bone marrow hematopoiesis, anti-hypertension, and cosmetics and anti-ageing properties. This study was designed to purify and elucidate the structure of saponin contents of the body wall of sea cucumber Holothuria lessoni and to compare the distribution of saponins of the body wall with that of the viscera. The body wall was extracted with 70% ethanol, and purified by a liquid-liquid partition chromatography, followed by isobutanol extraction. A high-performance centrifugal partition chromatography (HPCPC) was conducted on the saponin-enriched mixture to obtain saponins with a high purity. The resultant purified saponins were analyzed using MALDI-MS/MS and ESI-MS/MS. The integrated and hyphenated MS and HPCPC analyses revealed the presence of 89 saponin congeners, including 35 new and 54 known saponins, in the body wall in which the majority of glycosides are of the holostane type. As a result, and in conjunction with existing literature, the structure of four novel acetylated saponins, namely lessoniosides H, I, J, and K were characterized. The identified triterpene glycosides showed potent antifungal activities against tested fungi, but had no antibacterial effects on the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. The presence of a wide range of saponins with potential applications is promising for cosmeceutical, medicinal, and pharmaceutical products to improve human health.

RESUMEN

The theory that meridians connect the upper and lower, interior and exterior of the whole human body comes from the clinical experience of acupuncture therapy mainly by choosing the acupoints of 12 regular meridians at the four limbs. During the process of merging the theories of meridians and Zangfu-organs (viscera), the expression of the intrinsic relationship of such connection gradually becomes more and more complicated. Therefore, the study on the correlation between the meridian and viscus should start from the characteristics of the meridian theory itself, and discriminate the "reasonable and unreasonable" components of the related theoretical descriptions in the literature in order to explore the scientific values of this correlation. Based on this viewpoint, the present article makes a brief analysis on this proposition from the following two angles of view: the understan-ding of such proposition and the historical evolution of the meridian theory.

RESUMEN

The correlation between meridians and viscera is the key content of the meridian theory in acupuncture medicine. This paper introduces the close relationship between the meridians running on the body surface and viscera from ancient lite-rature, modern experimental studies (such as acupoint sensitization, neuro-endocrine-immune networks, etc.), and clinical application in the treatment of various conditions with acupuncture, moxibustion, Guasha (scraping) therapies, etc. We also presented some related research ideas (i.e., taking the clinical treatment as the forerunner, paying more attention to multi-disciplinary integration, combining clinical and basic research together, doing research from tridimensional point of review, and making full use of advanced technology, etc.) in order to provide a possibly favorable help for researchers to further reveal the scientific mechanisms underlying correlation between the meridian and viscera in the future.

RESUMEN

The meridians and Zangfu-organs (viscera) are two major systems in the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). They were primarily emerged together in simple form possibly in the Han Dynasty shown by the unearthed silk manuscripts of Changsha Mawangdui Han Tomb, and became a systematic theory in classical book "Neijing" (The Yellow Emperor's Internal Classic). After classification of the meridians' disease manifestations described in book "Ling Shu-Jing Mai" (Miraculous Pivot: Meridians) we found that more than half of the manifestations appear along the running course of meridians. The symptoms and signs of disorders of the meridians correlated with viscera which have the same name in western medicine account for approximately 10%, and the rest pathologic manifestations correlated with the viscera in terms of TCM are approximately 30%. Current researches about meridian and viscera mainly focus on viscera, particularly on the stomach and heart. The researches on meridians and viscera that use real-time effects of acupuncture as indicators have a complicated relationship with the nerve segments, which presented as that "multiple meridians control one viscus" and the specificity of meridian. Our chronic experiment about blocking the meridians suggested an association between meridian and pathologic manifestations of viscera. Physical index measurement and mathematical analysis can verify certain patterns of meridian-physical appearances, which would be a direction for future meridian research. The stabilities of visceral functions rely on negative feedback regulation, which are probably realized by way of somatic and visceral afferent and efferent nerves and volume transmission of the tissue fluid channels of meridians. Therefore, signals of acupuncture stimulation of the distant acupoints might be transmitted to the central nervous system through neurohumor relay, open of the "negative feedback channels of meridians", achieving a bidirectional regulation, and at the same time, producing a phenomenon of "sensation propagated along the meridian" during signal transmission.
