RESUMO

Abstract The aim of the present study is to assess the effects of selenium nanoparticles on the growth, hematology and nutrients digestibility of Labeorohita fingerlings. Fingerlings were fed with seven isocaloric sunflower meal-based diet supplemented with different concentrations of nanoparticles naming T1 to T7 (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 mg/kg), with 5% wet body weight while chromic oxide was used as an indigestible marker. After experimentation for 90 days T3 treated group (1mg/kg -1Se-nano level) showed the best result in hematological parameters (WBCs 7.97 ×103mm-3, RBCs 2.98 ×106 mm-3 and Platelet count 67), nutrient digestibility (crude protein: 74%, ether extract: 76%, gross energy: 70%) and growth performance (weight gain 13.24 g, weight gain% 198, feed conversion ratio 1.5, survival rate 100%) as compared to the other treatment groups. Specific growth rates were found significantly higher in T5 than in other groups. The present study indicated positive effect of 1 mg/kg Se-nanoparticles on growth advancement, hematological parameters, and nutrients digestibility of L. rohita fingerlings.

RESUMO

Noise exposure may damage the synapses that connect inner hair cells with auditory nerve fibers, before outer hair cells are lost. In humans, this cochlear synaptopathy (CS) is thought to decrease the fidelity of peripheral auditory temporal coding. In the current study, the primary hypothesis was that higher middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR) thresholds, as a proxy measure of CS, would be associated with smaller values of the binaural intelligibility level difference (BILD). The BILD, which is a measure of binaural temporal coding, is defined here as the difference in thresholds between the diotic and the antiphasic versions of the digits in noise (DIN) test. This DIN BILD may control for factors unrelated to binaural temporal coding such as linguistic, central auditory, and cognitive factors. Fifty-six audiometrically normal adults (34 females) aged 18 - 30 were tested. The test battery included standard pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, MEMR using a 2 kHz elicitor and 226 Hz and 1 kHz probes, the Noise Exposure Structured Interview, forward digit span test, extended high frequency (EHF) audiometry, and diotic and antiphasic DIN tests. The study protocol was pre-registered prior to data collection. MEMR thresholds did not predict the DIN BILD. Secondary analyses showed no association between MEMR thresholds and the individual diotic and antiphasic DIN thresholds. Greater lifetime noise exposure was non-significantly associated with higher MEMR thresholds, larger DIN BILD values, and lower (better) antiphasic DIN thresholds, but not with diotic DIN thresholds, nor with EHF thresholds. EHF thresholds were associated with neither MEMR thresholds nor any of the DIN outcomes, including the DIN BILD. Results provide no evidence that young, audiometrically normal people incur CS with impacts on binaural temporal processing.

RESUMO

Sleep deprivation (SD) impairs memory due to disturbing oxidative stress parameters. Selenium is a main component of several antioxidant enzymes and provides a neuroprotective effect. The present study aimed to investigate the potential neuroprotective effect of chronic selenium administration on cognitive impairments induced by chronic SD. Adult male Wister rats were randomly assigned into five groups (n = 12/group). The SD was induced in rats using modified multiple platform model. Selenium (6 µg/kg of animal's body weight) was administered to rats via oral gavage for 6 weeks. The spatial learning and memory were assessed using the radial arm water maze (RAWM). Moreover, we measured the levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and GSH/GSSG, catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus. The results indicate that short- and long-term memory were impaired by chronic sleep deprivation (P < 0.05), while selenium administration prevented this effect. Moreover, selenium normalized antioxidants activities which were reduced by SD such as: catalase (P < 0.05), and SOD (P < 0.05), and significantly enhanced the ratio of GSH/GSSG in sleep-deprived rats (P < 0.05), without significant alteration of BDNF (P > 0.05), GSH (P > 0.05), or TBARS levels (P > 0.05). In conclusion, chronic SD induced memory impairment, and chronic treatment with selenium prevented this impairment by normalizing antioxidant enzymes activities in the hippocampus.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To clinically evaluate colour change of ceramic orthodontic brackets with the use of coloured beverages as ceramic brackets' resistance to discoloration has become a major concern. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective two parallel groups-split mouth randomized trial with a 1:1 allocation ratio. Two equal groups including 40 adolescent patients from the orthodontic department (Faculty of Dentistry, Mansoura University, Egypt), scheduled for maxillary premolar extractions were bonded with 2 types of mono-crystalline ceramic brackets: Type 1 (Inspire ICETM) and Type 2 (Radiance PlusTM). Participants in each group were asked to rinse with either black tea or Cola. After extraction, the colour of the 80 debonded brackets was compared to that of 20 control brackets from each type by spectrophotometer according to the international standard CIELAB colour space (CIE L*a*b*). The latter consists of three coordinates: L* (lightness value), a* and b* (the colour channels). The total colour difference ΔE* is the distance between two colours in this three-dimensional colour space. The colour change was also assessed by digital image analysis according to the RGB model. RESULTS: Type 1 brackets showed mean ΔE* values of 2.24±0.25 in black tea and 1.76±0.1 in Cola groups (P<0.001), while Type 2 brackets showed means of 1.99±0.15 in black tea and 1.56±0.1 in Cola groups (P<0.001). The mean RGB values were 174.3±12.02 in black tea and 185.6±6.9 in the Cola groups of type 1 brackets (P<0.001), while were 166.5±17.8 in black tea and 190.8±8.9 in Cola groups of type 2 brackets (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Black tea showed more significant effect than Cola on the two bracket types. Bracket type affected the colour change in each beverage group.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The Chars Tobacco Assessment Project 2018 is a holistic survey conducted in the chars (riverine islands) of Gaibandha in Northern Bangladesh, covering 985 households over 24 clusters. The survey was conducted with two objectives: (1) to assess levels of tobacco consumption and evaluate prevailing socio-economic, behavioral and health status of the chars population, and (2) to look at the effectiveness of advocacy campaigns to reduce tobacco consumption through behavioral nudges via randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in rural Bangladesh. The study site was purposively chosen due to its high tobacco consumption rate, and the geographical segregation of the chars aided in reducing spillovers for RCT design. DATA DESCRIPTION: In addition to detailed information on tobacco (smoking and smokeless) consumption and perception, data was collected on: household composition, housing and plot ownership, consumption, risks and shocks coping, dowry, farm production, loans, savings and lending, labor income, asset holdings, migration and remittance, anthropometry, respiratory diseases, co-morbidities, reproductive history, risk and time preference. Unique to the dataset are carbon monoxide readings for accurate short term smoking measurement and FEV1 and PEF values for identification of long term lung damage. The data is representative only for the chars of Gaibandha.

RESUMO

Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) is a biologically active ingredient, which is isolated from a popularChinese medicinal plant. It has been used effectively to treat ischemic heart problems, cerebrovascular and thrombotic vascular diseases. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of TMP on calciumsensing receptors in pulmonary artery smooth muscle in chickens. For this purpose forty day-old chicks were distributed into five groups: the control group, the hypoxia group (kept under low Oxygen treatment), and TMP groups (kept under low Oxygen treatment along with treatment of different concentrations of TMP). The pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells were also cultured on 6-well plates in high glucose culture medium and divided into the same five groups. We used in vivo and in vitro study models by applying immunohistochemistry, RT-qPCR assay and Western blotting analysis. Our results showed that pre-incubation with hypoxia markedly stimulated the activation of calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). The TMP decreased the mRNA and protein levels of CaSR. Treatment with TMP clearly inhibited the activation of all CaSR in a dose-dependent manner. Our data demonstrated that TMP can down-regulate the expression of CaSR. Therefore, these findings provide a new target to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) under hypoxic conditions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To measure prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Saudi Arabia, unveil the life style, nutritional habits and status, as well as identify the potential risk factors. Method: A school-based survey targeting Saudi school students and employees was conducted during the  period from 2013 to 2014 using multistage cluster random sample in Central, Western and Eastern regions. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and difference between various population subgroups were calculated. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the predictors of potential risk factors. Results: Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 49.5% in students and 44% in employees. Life style was not adequate to protect against vitamin D depletion. Unhealthy nutritional habits were widespread, some manifested in childhood while others manifested later in life. Living in the Eastern region, females, 16-19 years of age, low economic class, obese and lack of omega 3 supplements were risk factors in students. Employees living in the Eastern region, females, middle-income class, carbonated soft drink consumers, and lack of multivitamin supplements were at higher risk. Conclusion: There is a need for a health awareness program using evidence-based recommendations. Screening for early detection and correction of the condition should be proposed to be part of the national health strategy. There is need for identifying the burden of vitamin D deficiency on other diseases to control and improve the prognosis of these conditions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and vitamin D insufficiency (VDI) are significant health problems all over the world. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of VDD and VDI in children and adolescents residing in 8 provinces in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and to also investigate calcium homeostasis in these subjects. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2110 participants aged between 6 and 15 years. Information on socio-demographic status, anthropometric measurements, knowledge about vitamin D, color of the skin, dietary intake, sun exposure experience, smoking, and physical activity were collected through a questionnaire given to the parents of all subjects. The subjects were divided into three groups as vitamin D deficient, vitamin D insufficient, and vitamin sufficient according to their blood level of vitamin D [VDD ≤25 nmol/L (25 hydroxy vitamin D), VDI >25-50 nmol/L, and VDS >50 nmol/L]. RESULTS: VDD was highly prevalent in this group of children. 95.3 of the subjects had either VDD (45.5%) or VDI (49.9%). The prevalence rate of VDD combined with VDI was higher in females (97.8%) compared to males (92.8%) (p<0.001). Only 1.6% had significant hypocalcaemia. Children with dark skin had lower concentrations of vitamin D and higher concentrations of parathormone. A positive correlation was observed between 25 hydroxy vitamin D level and serum calcium, inorganic phosphate, and alkaline phosphatase concentrations. onclusion: The results showed a high prevalence of VDD and VDI in Saudi children with significantly higher prevalence in girls. These findings necessitate the set-up of a national program for vitamin D supplementation and health education for this vulnerable group.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) is important because NAFLD patients have a 1.7-fold increase in standardised age and gender matched mortality. Currently treatment is based on life style modification and managing comorbid associating disease. Other medications remain experimental. Essential phospholipid (EPL) is a nutrient for the liver, helping to maintain vitality of cell membranes where the vast majority of liver activities are regulated. We performed a randomised open label study to evaluate EPL as an adjuvant nutrient to the treatment of primary NAFLD or NAFLD with comorbid disease. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Three groups of NAFLD patients were recruited: lone (n=113), diabetes mellitus type 2 (n=107) and mixed hyperlipidaemia (n=104). Diagnosis was established by excluding other chronic liver diseases. A standard diet and physical activity plan were advised to all patients. 1800mg of EPL a day was given for 24weeks, followed by 900mg for 48weeks. RESULTS: Essential phospholipid EPL led to a significant improvement of symptoms and a mean reduction of ALT of 50.8IU and AST of 46.1IU per patient (p<0.01). Abdominal ultrasonography indicated normalisation in 4.6% and a shift from grade II to grade I in 24% of patients. Liver stiffness measurement indicated an improvement in 21.1%, with a mean reduction in the LSM of 3.1K Pascal/patient. Reducing the dosage after six months led to a limited relapse in 43.8-63.2% of patients, for lone and NAFLD with co-morbid conditions. CONCLUSION: Essential phospholipid (EPL) as a nutritional supplement resulted in a significant improvement in clinical parameters and transaminases for all NAFLD patients. Ultrasound and LSM revealed modest improvement. There is a need for uninterrupted maintenance to avoid relapse.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The standard triple therapy for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori consists of a combination of a proton pump inhibitor at a standard dose together with two antibiotics (amoxicillin 1000 mg plus either clarithromycin 500 mg or metronidazole 400 mg) all given twice daily for a period of 7-14 days. Recent reports have shown a dramatic decline in the rate of H. pylori eradication utilizing standard triple therapy from 95% down to 70-80%. AIMS: Our study was designed to evaluate the effect of adding a probiotic as an adjuvant to common regimens used for H. pylori eradication. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An open label randomized observational clinical study was designed to test three different regimens of H. pylori eradication treatment: Standard triple therapy with a concomitant probiotic added at the same time (n = 100), starting the probiotic for 2 weeks before initiating standard triple therapy along with the probiotic (n = 95), and the third regimen consists of the probiotic given concomitantly to sequential treatment (n = 76). The three arms were compared to a control group of patients treated with the traditional standard triple therapy (n = 106). RESULTS: The eradication rate for the traditional standard therapy was 68.9%, and adding the probiotic "Bifidus infantis" to triple therapy, led to a successful rate of eradication of 83% (P < 0.001). Pre-treatment with 2 weeks of B. infantis before adding it to standard triple therapy increased the success rate of eradication to 90.5%. Similar improvement in eradication rate was noted when B. infantis was added as an adjuvant to the sequential therapy leading to an eradication rate of 90.8%. CONCLUSION: Adding B. infantis as an adjuvant to several therapeutic regimens commonly used for the eradication of H. pylori infection significantly improves the cure rates.

RESUMO

The concentration of heavy metals including Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni and Fe in different parts of Rosmarinus officinalis medicinal plant grown in Jordan were evaluated. Medicinal plant samples and soil samples were collected from three different zones in Jordan (Irbid, Al-Mafraq and Ma'an). Samples were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) after chemical treatments using acid digestion procedures. Heavy metal levels in washed and unwashed in each part of R. officinalis were analyzed and compared statistically. Results show that concentrations of investigated heavy metals were varied from plant part to another part of R. officinalis. For example, Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd in most parts of R. officinalis in the three zones were concentrated in the following order: flowers, leaves, stems, whereas Pb, Ni and Fe were concentrated in order as follows: leaves, flowers and stems. Heavy metal concentrations in soil samples was evaluated and correlated with their levels in R. officinalis. Two standard reference materials of plant (SRM 1790a; spinach leaves and CRM 281; rye grass) and one standard reference materials of soil (GBW 07406) were examined to validate the method used. Results show that high recoveries were obtained.

RESUMO

Ten Gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial cultures were recovered from nine water, mud, and soil samples collected from the Dead Sea shore at Suwaymah. All bacterial cultures were able to grow at 10% NaCl and at 45 degrees C. They were able to grow in nutrient media supplemented with 1250 ppm of Zn. Most of them, except cultures 2 and 8, were able to grow in nutrient medium supplemented with 1000 ppm of Cu. After 2 wk of incubation of these 10 cultures at different concentrations (5, 25, 100, and 500 ppm), stock solutions of both Zn and Cu elements, the maximum absorption using atomic absorption spectrometry for Zn was achieved by culture 7 at 11.2%, 1.0%, 38.4%, and 84.54%, respectively, from the previous stock solutions, whereas the maximum absorption of the same concentration of Cu was achieved by culture 3 at 6.2%, 55.56%, 85.66%, and 90.82%, respectively, of the different concentrations. After 3 wk of incubation, the estimated absorption for Zn was achieved by cultures 2, 9, and 10 at 19.2%, 16.68%, 42.92%, and 76.5%, 18.2%, 21.56%, 32.22%, and 77.43%, and 20.8%, 23.52%, 32.22%, and 82.84% of the previous stocks. The maximum absorption of the same concentration of Cu was achieved by culture 3 at 32.6%, 49.88%, 90.44%, and 91.86%, respectively. The accumulation of the absorbed metals was found to be maximum in the protoplast of all cultures. The accumulation at the cell wall was maximum for cultures 2 and 6 for Zn and Cu, respectively, and between the cell wall and the plasma membrane, it was maximum for cultures 2 and 8 for Zn and Cu, respectively.
