RESUMO

Non-pharmacological therapy has gained popularity in the intervention of Alzheimer's disease (AD) due to its apparent therapeutic effectiveness and the limitation of biological drug. A wealth of research indicates that music interventions can enhance cognition, mood and behavior in individuals with AD. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms behind these improvements have yet to be fully and systematically delineated. This review aims to holistically review how music-based intervention (MBI) ameliorates abnormal emotion, cognition decline, and behavioral changes in AD patients. We cover several key dimensions: the regulation of MBIs on cerebral blood flow (CBF), their impact on neurotransmission (including GABAergic and monoaminergic transmissions), modulation of synaptic plasticity, and hormonal release. Additionally, we summarize the clinical applications and limitations of active music-based intervention (AMBI), passive music-based intervention (PMBI), and hybrid music-based intervention (HMBI). This thorough analysis enhances our understanding of the role of MBI in AD and supports the development of non-pharmacological therapeutic strategies.

Based on the concept of quality by design(QbD), this study optimized the processing technology of Ilicis Rotundae Cortex. According to the processing method and ingredient requirements of Ilicis Rotundae Cortex in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the content of syringin and pedunculoside, alcohol extract, fragmentation rate, and moisture content were taken as the critical quality attributes(CQAs). The soaking time, moistening time, and drying time were taken as critical process parameters(CPPs) by single factor tests. The weight coefficients of CQAs were determined by the analytic hierarchy process(AHP)-entropy weighting method, and the comprehensive score was calculated. With the comprehensive score as the response value, Box-Behnken design was employed to establish a mathematical model between CPPs and CQAs, and the design space for the processing of Ilicis Rotundae Cortex was built and verified. The results of ANOVA showed that the mathematical model had the P value below 0.05, the lack of fit greater than 0.05, adjusted R~2=0.910 5, and predicted R~2=0.831 0, which indicated that the proposed model had statistical significance and good prediction performance. Considering the factors in production, the best processing conditions of Ilicis Rotundae Cortex were decoction pieces of about 1 cm soaking for 1 h, moistening for 4 h, and drying at 60-70 ℃ in a blast drier for 2 h. The optimized processing technology of Ilicis Rotundae Cortex was stable and feasible, which can provide a reference for the standardized preparation and stable quality of Ilicis Rotundae Cortex.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anti-invasion efficacy of the ethanol extract of Oldenlandia diffusa Will. (EEOD) on a three-dimensional (3D) human malignant glioma (MG) cell invasion and perfusion model based on microfluidic chip culture and the possible mechanism of action of Oldenlandia diffusa Will. (OD). METHODS: The comprehensive pharmacodynamic analysis method in this study was based on microfluidic chip 3D cell perfusion culture technology, and the action mechanism of Chinese medicine (CM) on human MG cells was investigated through network pharmacology analysis. First, the components of EEOD were analyzed by ultraperformance liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS). Then, cell viability and apoptosis were assessed to determine the optimum concentration of EEOD for invasion experiments, and two-dimensional (2D) migration and invasion abilities of U87 and U251 MG cells were evaluated using scratch wound and Transwell assays. The possible mechanism underlying the effects of EEOD on glioma was analyzed through a network pharmacology approach. RESULTS: Thirty-five compounds of EEOD were detected by UPLC-Q-TOF/MS. EEOD suppressed the viability of MG cells, promoted their apoptosis, and inhibited their migratory and invasive potentials (all P<0.05). Network pharmacology analysis showed that OD inhibited the invasion of MG cells by directly regulating MAPK and Wnt pathways through MAPK, EGFR, MYC, GSK3B, and other targets. The anti-invasion effect of OD was also found to be related to the indirect regulation of microtubule cytoskeleton organization. CONCLUSIONS: ]EEOD could inhibit the invasion of human MG cells, and the anti-invasion mechanism of OD might be regulating MAPK and Wnt signaling pathways and microtubule cytoskeleton organization.

The diurnal variation, gas-particle partitioning, health risks, and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in a northern basin city of China in winter, 2020. The mean concentrations of particulate and gaseous PAHs were 87.90 ng m-3 and 69.65 ng m-3, respectively, and their concentrations were considerably enhanced during the domestic heating period. The relationship between the gas-particle partitioning coefficient of PAHs (KP) and subcooled liquid vapor pressure of PAHs (PL0) indicated organic absorption as the mechanism for this partitioning. However, the dual sorption model confirmed adsorption onto elemental carbon (EC). The health risks indicated by several equivalent parameters showed an important health effect of PAHs, especially of particulate PAHs bound onto PM2.5 during the heating period. Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) were also studied as an auxiliary parameter to evaluate the health impact of PAHs. According to the diagnostic ratios of PAHs and PMF model results, petroleum volatilization and coal combustion were the dominant sources of particulate PAHs during the non-heating and heating periods, respectively. The source apportionment results can help efficiently control PAHs and their health risks.

Mulberry extract has been proven to have the effect of resisting alcohol damage, but its mechanism is still unclear. In this study, the composition of mulberry ethanol extract (MBE) was identified by LC-MS/MS and the main components of MBE were ascertained by measuring. Gastric mucosal epithelial (GES-1) cells were used to elucidate the mechanism of MBE and rutin (the central part of MBE) helped protect against alcohol damage. The results revealed that phenolics accounted for the majority of MBE, accounting for 308.6 mg/g gallic acid equivalents and 108 substances were identified, including 37 flavonoids and 50 non-flavonoids. The treatment of 400 µg/mL MBE and 320 µM rutin reduced early cell apoptosis and the content of intracellular reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde and increased glutathione. The qPCR results indicated that the MBE inhibits the expression of genes in the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, including p38, JNK, ERK and caspase-3; rutin inhibits the expression of p38 and caspase-3. Overall, MBE was able to reduce the oxidative stress of GES-1 cells and regulated apoptosis-related genes of the MAPK pathway. This study provides information for developing anti-ethanol injury drugs or functional foods.

Seventeen triterpenoids including four new lanostane triterpenoids (1-3 and 5) were isolated from the fruiting bodies of Ganoderma lucidum by various chromatographic techniques. Their chemical structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic data, including 1D-NMR, 2D-NMR, and HRESIMS. In addition, the spectral data of compound 4 was reported for the first time. In an in vitro bioassay, most isolated triterpenoids could inhibit the hydrolysis activity of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). Furthermore, there is no cytotoxicity observed for these isolated triterpenoids. Therefore, G. lucidum showed the potential application for anti-neuroinflammation and more FAAH inhibitors may be explored from G. lucidum.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the effect and safety of compound Kushen injection (CKI) as an add-on treatment on the treatment for breast cancer. METHODS: We searched eight major electronic databases from their inception to November 1, 2021, for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing CKI plus chemotherapy with chemotherapy alone. Primary outcomes included objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR), health-related quality of life (HRQoL), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). Secondary outcomes included adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and tumor marker level. We used Cochrane's RevMan 5.3 for data analysis. The GRADEpro was used to appraise the certainty of evidence. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was applied to estimate the required sample size in a meta-analysis and test the robustness of the current results. RESULTS: Thirty RCTs with 2556 participants were totally included. CKI plus chemotherapy showed significant effects in increasing ORR (RR 1.30, 95%CI [1.18, 1.43], I 2 = 27%, n = 1694), increasing DCR (RR 1.21, 95%CI [1.15, 1.28], I 2 = 16%, n = 1627), increasing HRQol as measured by Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) score improvement rate (RR 1.42, 95% CI [1.26, 1.61], I 2 = 37%, n = 1172), increasing the PFS (MD 2.24 months, 95%CI [1.26, 3.22], n = 94) and the OS (MD 2.24 months, 95%CI [1.45, 3.43], n = 94), compared to chemotherapy alone. The results showed that CKI plus chemotherapy had a lower risk of ADRs than that of chemotherapy alone group. The certainty of evidence of the included trials was generally low to very low. TSA for ORR and KPS score improvement rate demonstrated that the current results reached a sufficient power regarding both numbers of trials and participants. CONCLUSIONS: Low certainty of evidence suggested that the combination of CKI and conventional chemotherapy appeared to improve ORR, DCR, and KPS score in breast cancer patients. Conclusions about PFS and OS could not be drawn due to lack of evidence. Additionally, CKI appeared to relieve the risk of ADRs in patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapies. However, due to weak evidence, the findings should be further confirmed in large and rigorous trials.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Fangji Huangqi Decoction (FHD) is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). FHD has been hypothesized to inhibit the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process, which may positively impact breast cancer prevention and treatment. However, its exact mechanism of action is still unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to screen potential targets of FHD for the treatment of EMT in breast cancer through network pharmacology, and to verify their therapeutic effects in vitro experiments and high-throughput second-generation sequencing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data sets of effective components and targets of FHD were established through the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology database. The GeneCards and OMIM databases were used to establish breast cancer-related target datasets, which were then matched with the TCM target data. The interaction between key target proteins was analyzed using the STRING database; the gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases were used to identify the associated biological processes and enriched signal pathways, respectively. The active ingredient disease target network was analyzed using Cytoscape. Finally, next generation sequencing was used to verify the related pathways of FHD intervention in EMT in breast cancer. High-content screening was used to identify the genes/pathways affected by FHD. MDA-MB-231 and HCC-1937 breast cancer cell lines were used to evaluate the impact of FHD on migration, invasion, and EMT. RESULTS: Eighty possible significant targets were identified for the treatment of breast cancer EMT with FHD; GO and KEGG were used to identify 173 cell biological processes associated with breast cancer (P < 0.05), including the NF-κB and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways. The high-throughput sequencing and network pharmacology results were highly consistent. The migration and invasion ability of MDA-MB-231 cells was reduced and their EMT status could be reversed by DSHR2 knockdown. The results of morphology and scratch assays showed that FHD could improve the EMT status of HCC-1973. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides more evidence to support the clinical application of FHD, which has reliable interventional effects on breast cancer EMT. Its therapeutic effects may involve a multi-target, multi-pathway, and multi-mechanism effect.

Fourteen new eudesmane sesquiterpenoids (1, 3-5, 7-16) and seven known analogues were isolated from the whole plant of Artemisia hedinii. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic data analysis and comparison with published NMR data, and their absolute configurations were confirmed by X-ray diffraction experiments and TDDFT ECD calculation. Compounds 1-15 were identified as eudesmane acids, which represent a kind of lactone ring-opening eudesmane-type sesquiterpenes with an acetoxyl or a hydroxy group attached to C-9. Compounds 1 and 2, 5 and 6, and 7 and 8 are three pairs of epimers isomerized at C-3, C-5, and C-11, respectively. Compounds 1-9, 11-13, 15-19, and 21 could influence the proinflammatory phenotype of the M1 macrophage. Among them, compounds 5, 8, 9, 12, 16, and 19 consistently exhibited anti-inflammatory effects, as evidenced by downregulating classic pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-12, IL-6, and IFN-γ in LPS-induced primary bone marrow derived M1 macrophages.

BACKGROUND: Breast pain is one of the most common breast disorders, affecting 41%-69% women in the clinical populations. Chinese herbal medicine (Rupi Sanjie, RPSJ) capsule has been recommended to be commonly used for breast pain in China. This review aimed to systematically collect latest evidence and critically evaluate the eff ;ectiveness and safety of RPSJ capsule for breast pain. METHODS: We searched 6 databases from their inception to June 1, 2020 for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing RPSJ capsule with conventional drug therapies, placebo or no treatment. Primary outcomes were breast pain relief, reduction of breast mass and clinical cure rate. RESULTS: Seventeen RCTs were included in total, involving 2899 participants with breast pain. RPSJ capsule showed a significant effects in shortening duration of the breast pain (MD-6.51 days, 95%CI [-8.57, -4.45], n = 82, 1 trial), shortening the duration of breast mass (MD-5.17 days, 95%CI [-7.56, -2.78], n = 82, 1 trial), improving clinical cure rate (RR 1.55, 95% CI [1.21, 2.00], I² = 64%, n = 1398, 10 trials) and total effective rate (RR 1.08, 95% CI [1.03, 1.14], I² = 71%, n = 2170, 14 trials) compared to Tamoxifen (TAM). The meta-analysis showed that the incidence of total adverse events was higher in TAM group than the RPSJ capsule group (RR 0.30, 95%CI [0.21, 0.42], I² = 49%, n = 2122, 13 trials). CONCLUSIONS: RPSJ capsule appears to be a potentially effective in treating breast pain and seems generally safe for clinical application. However, this potential benefit is inconclusive due to generally weak evidence, and the findings should be further confirmed in large and rigorous trials.

To systemically evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Hongjin Xiaojie Capsules for hyperplastic disease of breast(HDBA), so as to provide the evidence for its clinical application. The inclusion criteria are the RCT of single administration of Hongjin Xiaojie Capsules for treatment of HDBA. We retrieved following databases(CNKI, WanFang, VIP, SinoMed, Cochrane Library and PubMed) from their inception to October 1, 2019. Two researchers independently screened out literatures and extracted data, and assessed the methodological quality of eligible RCT according to the criteria in Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. RevMan 5.3 was used for data analysis, binary data was summarized by risk ratio(RR) with confidence intervals(CI) of 95%, and continuous data were summarized by mean difference(MD) with CI of 95%. To estimate the sample size of systematic review, trial sequential analysis(TSA) was performed base on software TSA v0.9 version. Totally 14 RCTs were included, involving 3 057 patients. The results of Meta-analysis showed a significantly higher cure rate(RR=1.13, 95%CI[1.03, 1.25], P=0.01) and higher total effective rate(RR=1.09, 95%CI[1.05, 1.13], P<0.000 1) in Hongjin Xiaojie Capsules group than those in the Juyuansuan Tamoxifen group. The incidence of adverse events was significantly higher in Juyuansuan Tamoxifen group than that in Hongjin Xiaojie Capsules group(RR=0.28 95%CI[0.16, 0.49], P<0.001), and the adverse events included nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, unclear vision, dizziness and headache. The TSA for the cure rate demonstrated that the current available data reached the expected value. However, due to the low effect intensity of evidence, the pooled results might be affected by high risk bias of trials. The quality of evidence of included trials was generally low or very low. Inverted funnel diagram showed possible publication bias. This review suggested that Hongjin Xiaojie Capsules were potentially effective and safe in treatment of HDBA, especially, the incidences of drug-related adverse events from Hongjin Xiaojie Capsules were significantly lower than those from tamoxifen. However, because of lack of high-quality evidence for drawing a conclusion, more rigorously designed and high-quality trials are needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of Hongjin Xiaojie Capsules.

Two novel quinolone alkaloids (1 and 2) and two novel indole alkaloids (5 and 8), together with eleven known analogues, were isolated from the nearly ripe fruits of Evodia rutaecarpa. Their structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic data, including NMR, HRESIMS, and ECD. Additionally, the anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, and anti-bacterial activities of the isolated alkaloids were evaluated in vitro. Compound 5 as a new alkaloid displayed moderate inhibitory effect against four human cancer cell lines (MCF-7 IC50 = 30.7 µM, Hepg-2 IC50 = 65.2 µM, A549 IC50 = 39.1 µM, and SHSY-5Y IC50 = 24.7 µM), α-glucosidase (IC50 = 23.9 µM) and PTP1B (IC50 = 75.8 µM). Compound 11 showed better inhibitory effect against PTP1B (IC50 = 16.2 µM) compared with that of the positive control. Compounds 5, 13, and 14 showed moderate inhibitory effects against Bacillus cereus with MIC values of 50, 25, and 10 µM, respectively.

Due to the sequelae and recurrence in patients with COVID-19 after recovery. This article, based on the theory of "preventive treatment of diseases" in traditional Chinese medicine, which believes that the three pathogenic factors of epidemic toxin, dampness, and lung deficiency are the fundamental causes of the recurrence of COVID-19. The treatment strategies are to remove pathogenic factors, strengthen qi, nourish yin, clear heat, moisten dryness, and at the same time, reinforce the lung, spleen and kidney, and soothe the liver. Through a variety of treatments such as oral administration, external treatment, and skin absorption, it provides a new idea and method for the management of the recurrence of COVID-19.

MicroRNA-1 (miR-1) stands out as the most prominent microRNA (miRNA) in regulating cardiac function and has been perceived as a new potential therapeutic target. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) are major active constituents of the traditional Chinese medicine based on L. barbarum. The purpose of this study was to exploit the cardioprotective effect and molecular mechanism of LBPs underlying heart failure. We found that LBPs significantly reduced the expression of myocardial miR-1. LBPs improved the abnormal ECG and indexes of cardiac functions in P-V loop detection in transgenic (Tg) mice with miR-1 overexpression. LBPs recovered morphological changes in sarcomeric assembly, intercalated disc and gap junction. LBPs reversed the reductions of CaM and cMLCK, the proteins targeted by miR-1. Similar trends were also obtained in their downstream effectors including the phosphorylation of MLC2v and both total level and phosphorylation of CaMKII and cMyBP-C. Collectively, LBPs restored adverse structural remodelling and improved cardiac contractile dysfunction induced by overexpression of miR-1. One of the plausible mechanisms was that LBPs down-regulated miR-1 expression and consequently reversed miR-1-induced repression of target proteins relevant to myocardial contractibility. LBPs could serve as a new, at least a very useful adjunctive, candidate for prevention and therapy of heart failure.

A previous study reported that Yi Guan Jian (YGJ) may increase the proliferation and differentiation of hepatic oval cells in a rat liver cirrhosis model. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect and mechanism of action of YGJ on inducing hepatic differentiation in bone marrow­derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM­MSCs) via stromal­cell derived factor­1 (SDF­1). Murine BM­MSCs were isolated with whole bone marrow adherence, then identified by immunocytochemical staining and flow cytometry. Passage 2 cells were divided into 8 groups and their differentiation was induced by cell factors added to the medium, including hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), SDF­1 and YGJ. Each of the cell factors was used alone and any two or three of them were combined to establish different cell microenvironments in the different treatment groups. Albumin (ALB) was selected as a hepatocellular marker and cytokeratin­18 (CK­18) as a cholangiocellular marker. The protein and mRNA expression levels of ALB and CK­18 were used to determine the differentiation of BM­MSCs using immunocytochemical staining, western blotting and reverse transcription­quantitative polymerase chain reaction on days 7, 14, 21 and 28 during induction. The relative expression levels of ALB and CK­18 resulted in time­dependent increases in the groups supplemented only with HGF, SDF­1 or YGJ. Combination treatment of any two HGF, SDF­1 and YGJ led to a higher expression of ALB and CK­18 compared with only one cell factor treatment. Additionally, when all three were used in a combined treatment the expression levels of ALB and CK­18 occurred at an earlier time and was higher overall. Therefore, the present study suggested that YGJ had an effect on inducing hepatic differentiation in BM­MSCs via SDF­1 and may act in a synergistic manner with HGF and SDF­1.

Yi Guan Jian decoction (YGD) may induce the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) into hepatocyte-like cells (HLCs); however, the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate this process. To do this, a dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver cirrhosis mouse model was established. The mice from the model group were randomly divided into three subgroups: i) Negative control, ii) hepatocyte growth factor and iii) YGD. The overall health, liver function and histological alterations were monitored. The expression of α­smooth muscle actin (α­SMA), C­X­C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4), extracellular signal­regulated kinase (ERK1/2), nuclear factor κB p65 subunit (NF­κB p65) and ß­catenin were measured by immunohistochemistry, western blotting and reverse transcription­quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Following administration of DMN, the overall health of the mice significantly decreased, with an increase in pathological developments and liver damage resulting in a decrease in liver function. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the expression of α­SMA, CXCR4, ERK1/2, NF­κB p65 and ß­catenin was upregulated. Following treatment with YGD, the overall health, liver function and pathology improved. The mRNA and protein expression levels of CXCR4 and ERK1/2 were upregulated, where as α­SMA, NF­κB p65 and ß­catenin levels were downregulated. The results demonstrated that YGD may induce the differentiation of BMSCs into HLCs to reverse DMN­induced liver cirrhosis; this may be achieved via an upregulation of the SDF­1/CXCR4 axis to activate the mitogen activated protein kinase/ERK1/2 signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of electro-acupuncture on Zusanli (ST 36), Guanyuan (RN 4) in patients with sepsis, and explore its mechanism in term of immune regulation. METHODS: In this prospective randomized controlled trial, 60 patients with sepsis were randomly assigned to the control group and the intervention group equally by block randomization. Patients in the control group received routine treatment and those in the intervention group received electro-acupuncture at bilateral Zusanli and Guanyuan in addition to routine treatment, respectively. The mortality at 28 days, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE)-II score were compared to evaluate the effect, and the levels of T cell subsets (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD4+/CD8+) and monocytes of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR using flow cytometry were compared to explore the mechanism of this combined treatment. RESULTS: Fifty-eight patients completed the trial with 29 in each group. There was no significant difference of mortality in the 28th day between the two groups, with 5 death of 29 patients in the intervention group (17.2%) and 9 of 29 in the control group (31.0%). After treatment, APACHE-II score of both groups was significantly decreased, however, score of the intervention group was lower than the control group (13.28±7.07 vs. 17.10±5.83; P<0.01). The levels of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD4+/CD8+ ratio of the intervention group improved after treatment and were higher than the control group (59.71%±11.94% vs. 52.54%±11.86%; 36.46%±7.60% vs. 31.58%±10.23%; 18.40%±8.82% vs. 23.07%±7.30%; 2.38±1.14 vs. 1.54±0.80, respectively; all P<0.05). The expression of HLA-DR significantly increased after treatment in the intervention group than that in the control group (7.28%±9.26% vs. 1.27%±7.00%; P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Electro-acupuncture at Zusanli and Guanyuan could improve clinical curative effect in patients with sepsis, which might be achieved by regulation of the immune system.

Giant hepatic hemangioma is a benign liver condition that may be treated using surgery. We studied the digital subtraction angiographic (DSA) characteristics of giant hepatic hemangioma, and the effectiveness of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) alone for its treatment. This was a retrospective study of 27 patients diagnosed with giant hepatic hemangioma and treated with TAE alone (using lipiodol mixed with pingyangmycin) at the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University, between January 2010 and March 2013. The feeding arteries were identified using DSA. All patients were followed up for between three weeks and 12 months. Changes in tumor diameter and symptoms were observed. The 27 patients included had giant hepatic hemangiomas ranging from 5.3 to 24.5 cm (mean, 11.24±5.08 cm) in the right (n = 13), left (n = 1) or both (n = 13) lobes. Preoperative hepatic angiography showed multiple abnormal vascular lakes in the early phase, known as the "early leaving but late returning, hanging nut on a twig" sign. On the day after TAE, hepatic transaminase levels were increased (ALT: 22.69±17.95 to 94.88±210.32 U/L; ALT: 24.00±12.37 to 99.70±211.54 U/L; both P<0.05), but not total bilirubin. Six patients complained of abdominal pain, and 12 experienced transient fever. In the months after TAE, tumor size decreased (baseline: 11.24±5.08; 3 months: 8.95±4.33; 6 months: 7.60±3.90 cm; P<0.05), and the patients' condition improved. These results indicated that TAE was effective and safe for treating giant hepatic hemangioma. TAE may be a useful alternative to surgery for the treatment of hepatic hemangioma.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the major neurological diseases of the elderly. How to safely and effectively remove the toxic Aß42 peptide through blood-brain barrier (BBB) is considered to be an effective method for the prevention and treatment of AD. The compounds whose molecule weight is less than 400 Da and the number of hydrogen bonding is less than 10 are more likely to permeate BBB. In our previous study, we have several small molecule compounds which are isolated from n-butanol (NB) extract of Alpinia oxyphylla that are similar with this kind of compounds This study explored the neuroprotective effects of the NB significantly protected against learning and memory impairments induced by Aß(1-42) in Y-maze test, active avoidance test and Morris water maze test. Besides, NB (180 mg/kg, 360 mg/kg) was able to attenuate the neuronal damage and apoptosis in the frontal cortex and hippocampus in mice. In addition, the inhibition of ß-secretase and the level of Aß(1-42) are also involved in the action mechanisms of NB in this experimental model. This study provided an experimental basis for clinical application of A. oxyphylla Miq. in AD therapy.
