RESUMO

Phenolic contents of the ethyl acetate extracts prepared from floral buds and opened flowers harvested on Crataegus azarolus trees native in two localities were performed. The antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH' (2,2-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS+ (2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radicals scavenging using spectrophotometric method. The C. azarolus var. aronia (Willd.) Batt., producing yellow fruits, was richer in total phenols (1638.7 +/- 89.9 mg acid gallic/100 g dry weight) according to C. azarolus var. eu-azarolus Maire (1415.5 +/- 23.8 mg acid gallic/100 g dry weight), producing red ones. Ethyl acetate extract from opened flowers has less content in total phenols, proanthocyanidins and flavonoids compared to this from floral buds. Floral buds from the two C. azarolus varieties occurring in Siliana-Djebel Serdj showed the highest radical scavenging activities (2431.8 +/- 32.7 and 2267.7 +/- 22.7 micromol Trolox/100 g dry weight). Hawthorn from Tunisia contains eight antioxidants of phenolic type (chlorogenic acid, hyperoside, rutin, spiraeoside, isoquercitrin, quercetin, (-)-epicatechin and the dimer procyanidin B2). These compounds identified specially in floral bud extracts presented a strong radical-scavenging activity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Screening for Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is recommended in children and young adults. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of patent WPW syndrome in subjects > or =60 years of age. METHODS: Four-hundred and fifty-nine consecutive patients with WPW syndrome, aged 8-80 years, were recruited; 32 (7%) of these patients were > or =60 years of age. The clinical, electrophysiological and therapeutic data for these patients were evaluated. RESULTS: Sixteen men and 16 women, aged 60-81 years (67+/-4.5), were admitted for resuscitated sudden death (1), rapid atrial fibrillation (4), syncope (4), or junctional tachycardia (13); 10 patients were asymptomatic (10). Left lateral bundles of Kent were detected more frequently in patients over 60 years (56%) than in those<60 years of age (40.5%). Reciprocal tachycardia was induced in 58% of subjects<60 years of age and 53% of those > or =60 years old (difference not significant); atrial fibrillation was more frequent in subjects > or =60 years of age (37.5% vs. 19%) (p<0.05). The incidence of malignant forms of WPW syndrome was identical in older and younger subjects. Ablation of the accessory pathway was indicated 18 times; effective ablation of a left bundle of Kent required a second intervention more often in patients > or =60 years of age (22% vs. 5%) (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: WPW syndrome is not uncommon in subjects over 60 years of age (7%). Left lateral accessory pathways, that have similar conduction properties to those in much younger subjects, are common. Ablation of the bundle of Kent is often difficult but is indicated in symptomatic subjects or those with more serious forms of WPW syndrome.

RESUMO

The chemical composition of the volatile fractions obtained by steam distillation from the capitula (C) and the aerial parts of Rhaponticum acaule DC were analysed by GC-MS. From the 57 identified constituents, representing 95.5% and 96.3% of the two oils, respectively, methyl eugenol, epi-13 manool, beta-ionone, beta-bisabolol, 1-octadecanol, phytol and farnesyl acetate were found to be the main components. Furthermore, the oils were tested against six Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and four phytopathogenic fungi. It was found that oils from both parts of R. acaule, and especially that of C, exhibited interesting antibacterial activity, but no antifungal activity was observed.

RESUMO

AIMS: To determine the feasibility and the results of exercise testing (ET) and electrophysiological study (EPS) in outpatient asymptomatic children with a Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. METHODS AND RESULTS: Exercise testing and transesophageal EPS were performed in 55 outpatient asymptomatic children aged 6 to 19 years old (14 +/- 3) with WPW. Wolff-Parkinson-White persisted during maximal exercise. Isoproterenol was not required in five children younger than 10 years old, because they developed a catecholaminergic sinus tachycardia. Maximal rate conducted through accessory pathway (AP) was higher in children younger than 16 years old than in teenagers (P < 0.05). Atrioventricular re-entrant tachycardia (AVRT) was induced in six children; atrial fibrillation (AF) in 12 children. The induction of tachycardias and the dangerous forms (18%) were not influenced by age. After 5 +/- 1 years, one child, 12 year old with inducible rapid AF, had a sudden cardiac arrest; two children became symptomatic after ablation. CONCLUSIONS: Transesophageal EPS was required to determine the prognosis of asymptomatic WPW in children. The maximal rate conducted in AP was higher in children younger than 16 years old than in teenagers; other data did not differ. AVRT was rare; 71% of children had no inducible arrhythmia and were authorized to resume physical activities.

RESUMO

The chemical composition and the in vitro antifungal and antioxidant activity of the essential oil and the methanolic leaf extracts of Teucrium sauvagei Le Houerou, an endemic medicinal plant growing in Tunisia, have been studied. More than 35 constituents having an abundance >or=0.2% were identified in the oil. beta-Eudesmol, T-cadinol, alpha-thujene, gamma-cadinene, and sabinene were the prevalent constituents. Results of the antifungal activity tests indicated that the methanolic extract inhibited the in vitro growth of seven dermatophytes, whereas the essential oil showed average inhibition against only three dermatophytes. In vitro antioxidant properties of the essential oil and the methanolic extract were determined by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)) assays and compared to those of the synthetic antioxidant Trolox. Due to their antifungal and antioxidant properties, the essential oil and the methanolic extract of T. sauvagei may be of use as natural preservative ingredients in food and/or pharmaceutical industries.

RESUMO

To report the frequency and intensity of anemia in a population of pregnant tunisian women. Our retrospective study concern 200 patients collected from january to july 1999 in a population of pregnancies. Mean age was 30.1 years and 68.5% of patients consult in the third trimester with a 33.5% rate of multiparity. The frequency of anemia is 37.5%. Anemia was ferriprive in 97.3% and hypochromic in 24% of cases. Mean ferritinemia is 4.19 ng/ml after 24 weeks of amenorrhea with a marqued decrease in case of multiparity and pregnancy evolution. Mean transferrinemia is significantly low in anemic (3.98 g/dl) versus non anemic (3.60 g/dl) patients (< 0.05). The comparison of anemia with parity, the delay between two pregnancies and term of pregnancy showed a higher risk with multiparity, short delay between two pregnancies and advanced term. The frequency of anemia in tunisian pregnant women is relatively high, prevention is based on iron supplementation and hygienodietetic advices.
