RESUMO

While plant microorganisms can promote plants by producing natural antibiotics, they can also be vectors for disease transmission. Contamination from plant management practices and the surrounding environment can adversely affect plants, leading to infections and hindered growth due to microbial competition for nutrients. The recirculation of nutrient-rich fluids can facilitate the transport of microorganisms between vegetables in the hydroponic production system. This issue can be addressed through the application of the decontamination method in the hydroponic liquid. Ultraviolet light (UV-C) has been employed for microbiology, and its effects on lettuce were evaluated in this study. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a decontamination system using UV-C in hydroponic solutions during nutrient recirculation in hydroponics. We evaluated the time required for lettuce plants to reach their maximum height, as well as their pigment content, phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity, and micro and macronutrient levels. The evaluation was conducted under two photoperiods (18 and 20 hours) in lettuce samples exposed to UV-C in the hydroponic fluid, with control groups not exposed to UV-C. The application of the UV-C decontamination system in hydroponic circulation water containing nutrients accelerated plant growth while maintaining nutritional values equal to or higher than those in the control groups without such a system. The results of microorganism control highlight the potential application of this technique for enhancing and expediting vegetable production. This approach reduces production time and enhances nutrient absorption and the content of certain compounds and minerals.

The use of artificial light sources in plants is considered a type of photobiomodulation (PBM), a trend in agriculture and food industries, aiming at decontamination, pest control, and increased production yield. However, literature lacks a broader assessment to address the effects of photon light spectra on plant characteristics. Here, we aimed to describe the effects of visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet light upon Allium cepa, a known bioindicator, under various light doses. Samples irradiated under visible and infrared light did not show cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, or mutagenicity in any of the evaluated doses. Light induction at 460 and 635 nm significantly stimulated root development of the test organism. In contrast, 254 nm irradiation proved to be cytotoxic, genotoxic, and mutagenic. This work reveals and quantifies the spectral response of A. cepa seeds, suggesting that it can be proposed as a model for future research on mechanisms of PBM in plants.

BACKGROUND: tinnitus is a symptom with no specific cause known to date, and there are no associated pharmacogenomics of hearing disorders and no FDA-approved drugs for tinnitus treatment. The effectiveness of drug treatments is not reproducible on idiopathic patients and inexistent in refractory patients. Personalized treatments for these patients are a great clinical need. Our study investigated the outcome of potential alternative and complementary treatment modalities for idiopathic and refractory tinnitus patients. METHODS: we were the first to evaluate the tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) score changes over the course of treatment up to 15 days after complete cessation of treatment for novel transmeatal low-level laser therapy (LLLT) modalities using light alone, as well as LLLT combined with vacuum therapy (VT), ultrasound (US), Ginkgo biloba (GB) and flunarizine dihydrochloride (FD), while also comparing all treatment outcomes with laser puncture (LP), FD alone and GB alone. RESULTS: a positive treatment outcome (superior to a placebo effect) was achieved by using either LP or transmeatal LLLT, whereas short-term antagonistic effects of VT, US, GB and FD when combined with LLLT. For transmeatal LLLT, an improvement in the treatment outcome was observed by increasing the irradiation time from 6 min to 15 min (with 100-mW of applied laser power at 660 nm). Finally, a lasting therapeutic effect higher than the placebo was observed at 15 days after treatment upon combining LLLT with VT, GB or by using FD alone, by using the transmeatal LLLT alone or by using LP. CONCLUSIONS: LP and Transmeatal LLLT can be promising alternative treatments for idiopathic and refractory tinnitus patients. Future studies should investigate the long-term effects of LLLT in tinnitus patients, as well as the dosimetry and wavelength of transmeatal LLLT.

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been studied as an alternative to combat bacterial resistance to the commonly used antibiotics. aPDT requires the use of a photosensitizer and curcumin is one of the more promising, though the usage of natural curcumin can be inconsistent in certain biomedical uses due to differences in soil condition and turmeric age, besides a large quantity of the plant is necessary to obtain useful amounts of the actual molecule. As such, a synthetic analogue is preferred as it is pure, and its components are better characterized. The present work studied photophysical differences in both natural and synthetic curcumin using photobleaching experiments and searched for whether differences existed in aPDT studies against Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed a faster O2 consumption and a singlet oxygen's generation rate lower by the synthetic curcumin, in comparison with the natural derivative. However, no statistical difference was observed when inactivating S. aureus and these results were following a concentration-based pattern. Thus, the use of synthetic curcumin is indicated, as it can be obtained in controlled amounts and with less environmental impact. Although there are small changes in a photophysical context comparing natural versus synthetic curcumins, we did not observe statistical differences in the photoinactivation of S.aureus bacteria, and reproducibility in biomedical contexts is better achieved with the synthetic analogue.

Post-stroke sequelae includes loss functions, such as cognitive and sensory-motor which lead to emotional and social problems, reducing quality of life and well-being. The main aim of our study was to investigate the effects of transcranial laser photobiomodulation together with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in post-stroke patients. We performed a clinical trial and an ex vivo study. For the clinical trial, hemiplegic patients were separated into two groups: Treated Group (TG): Hemiplegics treated with transcranial laser (on) associated with NMES (on) and; Placebo Group (PG): Hemiplegics treated with placebo transcranial laser (off) associated with NMES (on). The cluster prototype includes 12 diode laser beams (4 × 660 nm, 4 × 808 nm and 4 × 980 nm) with average power of 720 mW per cluster applied during one minute, leading to 43.2 J energy per cluster. Fifteen regions for all head were irradiated by cluster, leading to 648 J energy per session. The parameters of NMES of the paretic limbs to generate extension wrist and ankle dorsiflexion were symmetrical biphasic rectangular waveforms, 50 Hz frequency, 250 µs pulse duration, and adjustable intensity to maintain the maximum range of motion (amplitude between 0 and 150 mA). Our clinical trial showed improvement of cognitive function, pain relief, greater manual dexterity, enhancement of physical and social-emotional health which lead to better quality of life and well-being. There was also increased temperature in the treated regions with laser and NMES. For the ex vivo study, the distribution of infrared and red radiation after penetration through the cranium and hemihead of cadavers were showed. Therefore, transcranial laser photobiomodulation associated with NMES can be an important therapeutic resource for rehabilitation after stroke.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate in vitro the efficacy of ultrasound device to remove caries-like dentin and the curcumin-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) to decontaminate the affected dentin. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens (n = 173) of 4 × 4 × 2 mm were first submitted to Knoop surface microhardness to standardize the specimens (29 ± 3 KHN). Artificial caries lesion was induced by Streptococcus mutans strain by biological model for 7 days. Infected dentin was removed (1 min) with the following techniques: dentin excavator, bur at low-speed rotation and ultrasound device. After that, aPDT application was performed using blue LED under 460 nm. Polarized light microscopy (PLM), removal rate (n = 10), cross-sectional microhardness (n = 10), colony forming units per milliliter (CFU) (n = 9) and confocal laser microscopy (CM) (n = 2) were performed. ANOVA with Welch correction, post-hoc Games-Howell and two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post-hoc tests were used. RESULTS: PLM confirmed the caries lesion formation with a depth of ∼147.9 µm. Groups treated with ultrasound showed lower removal rate (p = 0.001). Regardless of the treatment, the microhardness values increased as function of depth (p ≤ 0.05). Carbide bur showed the highest microhardness value, followed by ultrasound and excavator. CFU and CM showed a significant reduction in S. mutans after aPDT application. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound was efficient, since it removed infected dentin, preserving the affected dentin and aPDT can be used as a complementary therapy to decontaminate the affected dentin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Ultrasound device may help the clinician to remove dentin caries-like lesions since it is a conservative technique and provided the removal of infected dentin, preserving the affected dentin. aPDT application may be used as a complimentary technique to promote antibacterial effect and possibly minimize the risk of secondary caries.

A first step for microorganisms to reach the respiratory system and cause infectious disease is colonization in the nasopharynx. Humans inhale a bacterial load of up to 106 per cubic meter of air per day [1], including transient microorganisms between the upper and lower airways. This can lead to lung infections, amounting to billions of dollars in annual direct treatment costs in the United States, depending on the etiologic agent [2,3]. Curcumin has been described as a photosensitizer (PS) that, activated at 450 nm, is efficient against planktonic bacteria [4] and biofilms [5]. At the same time, effects on microbial interactions are commonly detected in the upper respiratory tract and should be considered for the treatment of adenoids [6]. We, therefore, propose in this study to optimize photodynamic therapy (PDT) conditions in vitro by simulating bacterial coinfection conditions in nasal cavities evaluated by the response surface method, where we can evaluate interactions of treatment variables. From this, the clinical case of the treatment of rhinosinusitis was carried out using PDT with nasal lighting. The absence of symptoms that characterize the disease was monitored and evaluated by the Kepler Meyer method. The study points out considerations that can be evaluated for the treatment to be a possibility of clinical indication in the control of rhinosinusitis.

It is postulated that the inflammatory process resulting from SARS-CoV-2 infection is the main cause of smell and taste dysfunctions in patients. In view of this, photobiomodulation, due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, may be a promising therapeutic modality to treat these disorders. In the present case report, we observed clinical improvement in the symptoms of anosmia and ageusia related to COVID-19 after treatment with photobiomodulation. Due to the inflammatory nature of COVID-19 and the anti-inflammatory effects, photobiomodulation antioxidants already proven in the literature make it a promising therapeutic modality, especially sequela COVID-related, including olfactory (anosmia) and taste (ageusia) dysfunction. In the present case report, the patient's olfactory and gustatory functions were re-established after 10 treatment sessions with photobiomodulation.

SUMMARY: Laser photobiomodulation (laser PBM) is known to be able to accelerate burn wound healing in the animal model; however little evidence exists on the action of laser PBM on the expression of important proteins in wound healing in the animal model, such as VEGF and TGF-ß1. The aim of this study was to carry out a systematic review in order to analyse the effect of laser PBM on VEGF and TGF-ß expression during burn wound repair in the animal model. A systematic review was carried out of the EMBASE, PubMed/ MEDLINE and LILACS databases. The studies included were preclinical studies that analysed the action of laser PBM on the expression of VEGF and TGF-ß (1, 2, 3) during burn wound repair in the animal model. The SYRCLE risk of bias tool was used. Random effect models were used to estimate the combined effect. Increased VEGF expression was observed with the use of laser PBM at 4.93 J/cm2 per point in the first two weeks after induction of the burn wound, with greater size of effect in the second week (SDM = 5.72; 95% CI: 3.14 to 8.31, I2 = 0 %; very low certainty of evidence). We also observed that the effect of laser PBM on TGF-ß1 expression was greater than in the control in the first week (SDM = -0.45; 95% CI: -1.91 to 1.02, I2 = 51 %; very low certainty of evidence), but diminished in the third week after induction of the lesion (SDM = -2.50; 95% CI: 3.98 to -1.01, I2 = 0 %; very low certainty of evidence). Laser PBM has an effect on TGF-ß1 and VEGF expression, promoting burn wound repair in the animal model.


RESUMEN: Es sabido que la fotobiomodulación por láser (FBM láser) puede acelerar el proceso de curación de heridas por quemadura en modelo animal, sin embargo aún se carece de mayor evidencia sobre la acción de la FBM láser en la expresión de proteínas importantes en el proceso de curación de heridas en modelo animal, como VEGF y TGF-ß1. Así, el objetivo de este estudio fue realizar una revisión sistemática a fin de analizar el efecto de la FBM láser sobre la expresión de VEGF, TGF-ß durante el proceso de reparación de heridas por quemadura en modelo animal. Se realizó una búsqueda sistemática en las bases de datos EMBASE, PubMed/MEDLINE y LILACS. Se incluyeron estudios preclínicos que analizaron la acción de la FBM láser en la expresión de VEGF, TGF-ß (1, 2, 3) durante el proceso de reparación de heridas por quemadura en modelo animal. Se utilizó la herramienta de riesgo de sesgo SYRCLE. Se utilizaron modelos de efectos aleatorios para estimar el efecto combinado. Observamos aumento de la expresión de VEGF con el uso de FBM láser 4.93 J/cm2 por punto, en las dos primeras semanas tras inducción de la herida por quemadura, con mayor tamaño de efecto en la segunda semana (SDM = 5,72; IC del 95%: 3,14 a 8,31, I2 = 0 %; certeza de la evidencia muy baja). También se observó el efecto de la FBM láser en la expresión del TGF- ß1 que fue mayor que el control en la primera semana (SDM = - 0,45; IC del 95%: -1,91 a 1,02, I2 = 51 %; certeza de la evidencia muy baja), disminuyendo en la tercera semana tras inducción de la lesión (SDM = -2,50; IC del 95%: -3,98 a -1,01; I2 = 0 %; certeza de la evidencia baja). La TFB por láser ejerce influencia en la expresión de TGF-ß1 y VEGF favoreciendo el proceso de reparación de heridas por quemadura en modelo animal.

Background and objective: To determine the effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in the burn wound healing compared with the control or with the use of antibiotics, in animal models. Materials and methods: A systematic search was conducted in EMBASE, MEDLINE, and LILACS databases. Preclinical studies were included that analyzed the effectiveness of PBMT in the burn wound healing, which assessed wound contraction, angiogenesis, proliferation of fibroblasts, and collagen deposition. SYRCLE risk of bias tool was used. Random effects models were used to estimate the pooled effect. Results: Thirty-eight studies were included. PBMT favored wound contraction (mean difference = -11.47, 95% confidence interval -19.87 to -3.08, I2 = 0%; moderate certainty of evidence). PBMT also favored angiogenesis at doses between 11 and 20 J/cm2, and increased the collagenization rate. Conclusions: In animal models, PBMT favored wound contraction, angiogenesis, and collagen deposition in second- and third-degree burn wounds.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Overuse injuries and painful symptoms in athletes and dancers (especially classical ballerinas) may lead to reduced functional performance. However, laser application may reduce pain and increase physical conditioning. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the immediate and long-term effects of infrared laser on classical ballerinas' feet. METHODS: Eight female adults who perform classical ballet training and feel pain in their foot, but report no injuries in the last 6 months participated in the study. Infrared laser (808 nm) was applied on ballerina's feet twice a week during three months. The laser parameters utilized were 100 mW average optical power and spot size of 0.04 cm2 applied during 1 min, leading to 6 J and 125 J/cm2 per point. Thermography, algometry and unipodal static standing balance test were performed. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in plantar arch temperature (1.6 °C for center and 2.3 °C for border, p < 0.05) immediately after laser treatment for all ballerinas. The pressure pain thresholds (PPT) were significantly increased for 5 of 7 analyzed sites (p < 0.05). Regarding to the static standing balance, the time on one-foot showed a significant increases (from 23 ± 12 s to 34 ± 13 s, p < 0.05) only when the test was performed on the left foot (support foot). CONCLUSION: Then, there were pain relief and improvement of functional performance in ballerinas. The possible mechanism of laser action in reducing pain and thus enhancing performance, like higher blood flow of foot due to an increase of cutaneous temperature, will be discussed.

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is promising for oral decontamination. Curcumin has been used as photosensitizer; however, the hydrophobic properties can negatively affect aPDT. This study evaluated the aPDT efficacy using Cur-loaded Pluronic® F-127 micelles against Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans biofilms. Micelles characterization was performed by zeta potential, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Cur concentrations, cell viability by CFU mL-1 and confocal microscopy were determined. Data were analyzed by parametric and nonparametric tests under 5%. Cur-loaded Pluronic® F-127 exhibited spherical shape, suitable particle size (≤100 nm), adequate polydispersity index, best stability, lower photodegradation and autoaggregation compared to unloaded-Cur. Both microorganisms were sensitive to Cur-loaded Pluronic® F-127 micelles aPDT, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 270 µm and 2.1093 µm for S. mutans and C. albicans suspended culture, respectively. Cur-loaded Pluronic® F-127 aPDT exhibited antibacterial/antifungal effect against the biofilms (~3 log10 reduction; P ≤ 0.05); however, similar to unloaded (P ≥ 0.05). Confocal images confirmed these results. Cur-loaded Pluronic® F-127 micelles exhibited good photo-chemical properties and may be a viable alternative to deliver Cur and to improve aPDT effect during the treatment of dental caries. Moreover, Pluronic® micelles can enhance the solubility, stability, permeability and control the release of Cur.

OBJECTIVE: A pressure ulcer (PU) is an area of tissue trauma caused by continuous and prolonged pressure, often associated with hospitalised patients immobilised due to neurological problems, negatively affecting their quality of life, and burdening the public budget. The aim of this study was to report the follow-up, for 45 weeks, of three patients with neurological lesions due to trauma who subsequently developed PUs, and who were treated with a combination of photodynamic therapy (PDT), low level laser therapy (LLLT) and cellulose membrane (CM). METHOD: PDT was mediated by the photosensitiser curcumin on a 1.5% emulsion base. Blue LED light at 450 nm was delivered continuously for 12 minutes at an irradiance of 30mW/cm2 and total energy delivered to the tissue was 22J/cm2. LLLT was performed with 660 nm laser, punctuated and continuous, twice a week with parameters: spot size 0.04cm2, power of 40mW, 10 seconds per point, fluence of 10J/cm2 and irradiance of 1000mW/cm2. RESULTS: All PUs had a significant reduction (range: 95.2-100%) of their area after 45 weeks of follow-up and two PUs had complete healing at 20 weeks and 30 weeks. All of the PUs showed a reduction in contamination with the PDT treatments in different proportions. CONCLUSION: From the results obtained, we conclude that the combination of PDT, LLLT and CM is a promising treatment for PU healing.

Healing wounds represent a major public health problem, mainly when it is infected. Besides that, the antibiotics misuse and overuse favor the development of bacterial resistance. This study evaluated the effects of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) combined with artificial skin on disinfection of infected skin wound in rats. Twenty-four Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 4 groups (n = 6): (i) control-untreated; (ii) aPDT-treated with curcumin-mediated aPDT (blue light); (iii) artificial skin-treated with artificial skin alcohol-based; and (iv) aPDT plus artificial skin-treated with aPDT associated with artificial skin alcohol-based. For the in vivo model, a full-thickness biopsy with 0.80 cm was performed in order to inoculate the microorganism Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). The aPDT was performed with a curcumin gel and a blue LED light (450 nm, 80 mW/cm2) at the dose of 60 J/cm2 and the treatment with alcohol-based artificial skin was done with the topical application of 250 µL. Additional animals were submitted to aPDT combined with the artificial skin. After treatments, the number of colony-forming units (CFU) and the damage area were determined. Data were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey tests. The highest reduction of the bacterial viability was observed in the PDT plus artificial skin group (4.14 log10), followed by artificial skin (2.38 log10) and PDT (2.22 log10) groups. In addition, all treated groups showed higher relative area of wound contraction (36.21% for the PDT, 38.41% for artificial skin, and 35.02% for PDT plus artificial) in comparison with the control group. These findings provide evidence for the positive benefits of aPDT with blue light and curcumin associated with artificial skin to decontaminate and accelerate the wound contraction.

It is estimated over 600 million pharyngotonsillitis (PT) cases worldwide per year and 30% of this total are caused by Streptococcus pyogenes with standard antibiotic treatment. Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) has been studied for the clinical research in infectious diseases. The study aim was to analyze the evolution of aPDT on inactivation of clinical strains of multiple cycles. S. pyogenes and clinical strains isolated from patients with PT were incubated with curcumin in formulation (2.25 mg/ml) and irradiated at 450 nm in Light fluence rates. A mortality was a measure of the counting colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/ml) surviving. Parameters of bacterial biofilm formation, uptake of photosensitizer (PS) and efficacy of antibiotics on survival of bacteria of each cycle were tested. The bacteria profile remains unchanged between 10 aPDT cycles was observed. The bacterial colony survival presented a reduction in capacity to form biofilm due adhesion of strains and PS uptake rate. The antibiotic remained efficient after aPDT cycles. Our in vitro results suggested a low-level of development of PDT resistance, however a decrease of photosensitizer uptake was observed. Furthermore, there is no cross effect on aPDT cycles and the first application of antibiotics.

Combating the Aedes aegypti vector is still the key to control the transmission of many arboviruses, such as Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya. As few products are efficient for Aedes aegypti control, the search for new strategies have become pivotal., t Substances with photodynamic activity, such as curcumin and their formulations, are strongly encouraged, due to their multi-target mechanism of action. In this study, we evaluated the photolarvicidal and ovicidal activity of curcumin in the presence of sucrose (named SC) and d-mannitol (named DMC). To support the understanding of the larvicidal action of these formulations, Raman micro-spectroscopy was employed. We also studied the morphological changes in Danio rerio (Zebrafish) gills, a non-target organism, and demonstrate that this is an environmentally friendly approach. Both SC and DMC presented a high photo-larvicidal potential. DMC showed the highest larval mortality, with LC50-24h values between 0.01 and 0.02 mg.L-1. DMC also significantly decreased egg hatchability, reaching a hatching rate of 10 % at 100 mg.L-1. The analysis of molecular mechanisms via Raman micro-spectroscopy showed that DMC is highly permeable to the peritrophic membrane of the larva, causing irreversible damage to the simple columnar epithelium of the digestive tube. Histological changes found in the D. rerio gills were of minimal or moderate pathological importance, indicating an adaptive trait rather than detrimental characteristics. These findings indicate that curcumin in sugar formulations is highly efficient, especially DMC, proving it to be a promising and safe alternative to control Aedes mosquitoes. Moreover, Raman micro-spectroscopy demonstrated high potential as an analytical technique to understand the mechanism of action of larvicides.

OBJECTIVES: To test the effectiveness of an efficient therapeutic protocol for the total mouth antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) mediated by 450 nm blue LED associated with curcumin in individuals with AIDS. METHODS: Patients were selected by exclusion criteria and randomly distributed in groups to test the effectiveness of antimicrobial aPDT with curcumin 0.75 mg/mL associated with the blue LED (67 mW/cm2, 20.1 J/cm2). Before and after the treatments, samples were collected from the saliva being processed in duplicate in selective culture media. The colonies were counted and the results obtained in log10 CFU/mL were statistically tested (T-paired statistical test, 5%). RESULTS: The log10 CFU/mL of Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., and total count of microorganisms showed statistically significant (p = 0.023; p = 0.001 and p = 0.017, respectively) reduction after treatment in patients with aPDT. CONCLUSION: aPDT was effective in reducing Streptococcusspp. in addition to reducing Staphylococcusspp., enterobacteria and the total count of microorganisms when considering the numbers of TCD4 and TCD8 lymphocytes. The aPDT in the studied protocol was able to control clinically important intraoral microorganisms for AIDS patients, both those with TCD4 lymphocytes above or below 25% of normal and those with TCD8 lymphocytes above 25% of normal.

INTRODUCTION: A mixture of curcuminoids: curcumin, desmethoxycurcumin (DMC), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC) are named natural curcumin. It is a lipophilic photosensitizer (PS) highly soluble in an organic solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Curcumin is a PS used for microbial inactivation using photodynamic action. However, this solvent has high cytotoxicity and is unavailable in formulations for clinical use. This study aimed to investigate the interactions of curcuminoids syrup with Streptococcus sp., a gram-positive coccus and one of the major pharyngeal pathogens, responsible for diseases such as pharyngitis. METHODS: Bacteria were incubated with curcuminoids (natural curcumin, synthetic, DMC, BDMC) at 37 °C in formulations: 1) syrup (water + sucrose) 2) solution alcohol + DMSO. Was centrifuged, and the supernatant collected for absorbance analysis. The results obtained correlating the absorbance with the supernatant to the absorbance of the default concentration. A study of microbial metabolism by growth curve was carried out to justify the result. RESULTS: The incorporation of curcumin in syrup is superior to alcohol/DMSO solution by microorganisms. Curcumin incorporation by S. mutans, S. pyogenes, isolated bacteria was 24, 26, 27 % in syrup and 10, 13, 5 % in alcohol/DMSO, respectively. Also, the presence of carbohydrate in a solution can activate the bacterial metabolism, getting better uptake results and photodynamic inactivation to natural curcumin and DMC. Such finds care optimizes the use of curcumin without complications generated by the solvent.

To evaluate the photobiomodulation (PBM) effect on the cardiovascular autonomic control, analyzed by baroreflex sensitivity (sequence method), during constant load exercise and recovery in diabetic men, we evaluated 11 men with type 2 diabetes (DM2) (40-64 years). The constant workload exercise protocol (TECC) was performed on two different days, 14 days apart from each other, to guarantee PBM washout period. After PBM by light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation (150 J or 300 J or placebo), 10 min of rest (REST) was performed. After this period, the volunteer was positioned on a cycloergometer to start the test (1-min rest, 3-min free-load heating, 6-min constant workload-EXERCISE, 6-min free-load cool-down, 1-min rest) followed by a sitting period of 10 min (RECOVERY). The constant workload corresponded to 80%VO2GET (gas exchange threshold) identified by a previous cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). PBM was applied in continuous mode, contact technique, bilaterally, on both femoral quadriceps and gastrocnemius muscle groups. The electrocardiogram R-R intervals (BioAmp FE132) and the peripheral pulse pressure signals (Finometer PRO) were collected continuously throughout the protocol. Stable sequences of 256 points were chosen at REST, EXERCISE, and RECOVERY. The baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) was computed in time domain according to the sequence method (αseq). The comparison between therapies (150 J/300 J/placebo) and condition (REST, EXERCISE, and RECOVERY) was performed using the ANOVA two-way repeated measures test. There was no interaction between therapy and conditions during the TECC. There was only the condition effect (p < 0.001), showing that the behavior of αseq was similar regardless of the therapy. Photobiomodulation with 150 J or 300 J applied previously to a moderate-intensity TECC in DM2 was not able to promote cardiovascular autonomic control changes leading to an improvement in BRS.

Background and objective: The object of this study was to analyze the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) who were treated simultaneously with ultrasound (US) and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). Materials and methods: This study included 13 patients of both genders, with diagnosis of TMD according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. The patients were treated with equipment consisting of US and PBMT in the same system. The treatment was applied to the left and right sides of the face in the masseter muscle, anterior temporalis muscle, and temporomandibular joint, two sessions per week for a total of eight sessions. The OHRQoL was assessed by the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) at three moments: pretreatment (T0), after the eight treatment sessions (T1), and 30 days after termination of treatment (T2). The Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskall-Wallis, and Spearman's correlation coefficient tests were applied, with a significance threshold of 5%. Results: Psychological discomfort, physical pain, and psychological limitation were the domains where the highest scores were obtained at T0. The total OHIP-14 scores at T1 and T2 were significantly lower than at T0. No statistical differences were observed between T1 and T2. Conclusions: We conclude that synergistic treatment was effective in improving the OHRQoL of patients with TMDs, and that its beneficial effects persisted at 1 month after termination of treatment.
