RESUMO

Globally, Indigenous populations have been impacted by colonization. Populations who have endured colonization are at higher risk of developing chronic diseases. Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission emphasizes reducing barriers to participation in physical activity and recommends the creation of culturally relevant and supportive policies and programing. Physical activity is a cornerstone in health promotion and public health to combat chronic diseases; however, in Canada, Indigenous developed physical activity programing is sparse, and those targeting women are non-existent in some regions. Makoyoh'sokoi (The Wolf Trail Program) is an 18-week long, holistic wellness program that was created by and for Indigenous women. Makoyoh'sokoi was developed by communities following extensive consultation and cultural oversight. Makoyoh'sokoi's core program consists of 12 weeks of weekly physical activity programing and health education, followed by another 6 weeks of weekly health education. Notably, communities have control over the program to modify based on individual needs and challenges. Programs commence and conclude with a ceremony with Elders giving a blessing and opening each other to connection. The goals of Makoyoh'sokoi are to empower women, improve health outcomes, and to implement a sustainable program by training a network of community members in their respective communities to facilitate delivery.

RESUMO

Clinical nurse leader (CNL)-integrated care delivery is an emerging nursing model, with growing adoption in diverse health systems. To generate a robust evidence base for this promising nursing model, it is necessary to measure CNL practice to explicitly link it to observed quality and safety outcome improvements. This study used a modified Delphi approach with an expert CNL panel to develop and test the face, content, and construct validity of the CNL Practice Survey instrument.

RESUMO

Images of physicians, patients, and medical instruments were placed on Graeco-Roman funerary monuments, altars and fresco paintings. These representations are examined here to determine whether there existed a standard convention by which physicians were depicted in order that the lay and possibly illiterate viewers could identify what the scene represented. Greek physicians were frequently shown with cupping vessels, midwives were seen with birthing stools, while Roman physicians were often shown with various surgical implements. It is argued that the correlation between the types of objects depicted with the medical practitioner was deliberately made by the artist to signify the nature of medicine the individual practiced, so that the viewer could identify the role the practitioner had in their society.

Proteotoxic stress (PS) is generated in cells under a variety of conditions involving accumulation of misfolded proteins. To avoid the toxicity of unmitigated PS, cells activate the heat shock response (HSR). HSR involves upregulation of factors such as ubiquitin and the non-housekeeping chaperone Hsp70 which assist with metabolism of aberrant proteins. The PS-HSR axis is a potential anticancer treatment target since many tumor cells display constitutive PS and dependence on HSR due to their rapid rates of proliferation and translation. In fact, induction of PS via stimulation of protein misfolding (hyperthermia), inhibition of proteasomes (bortezomib) or inhibition of Hsp90 (geldanamycin) have all been considered or used for cancer treatment. We found that combination of bortezomib with an inducer of protein misfolding (hyperthermia or puromycin) resulted in enhanced PS. HSR was also induced, but could not mitigate the elevated PS and the cells died via largely p53-independent apoptosis. Thus, combination treatments were more cytotoxic in vitro than the component single treatments. Consistent with this, combination of non-toxic doses of puromycin with bortezomib significantly increased the antitumor activity of bortezomib in a mouse model of multiple myeloma. These results provide support for using combination treatments that disrupt the balance of PS and HSR to increase the therapeutic index of anticancer therapies.

OBJECTIVE: To determine dietary supplementation practices and opinions, preferred means for dietary supplement (DS) education, and antidoping opinions among elite Canadian athletes varying in age and gender. DESIGN: A descriptive, cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Elite athlete training centers in Calgary, Canada and surrounding area. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 582 high-performance athletes (314 male, 268 female). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: High-performance athletes representing 27 sports with a mean age of 19.96+/-3.91 years completed a validated questionnaire assessing DS practices and opinions by recall. Sport categories included varsity, Canadian Sport Centre Calgary (CSCC), and National Sport School (NSS). RESULTS: There was extensive DS use, with 88.4% of participants taking>or=1 DS (mean of 3.08+/-1.87 DS per user) during the previous 6 months. Overall, sport drinks (22.4%), sport bars (14.0%), multivitamins and minerals (13.5%), protein supplements (9.0%), and vitamin C (6.4%) were most frequently reported. Older athletes were significantly more likely to report greater DS usage; to be advised by teammates, health food store retailers, and magazines; to prefer supplementation education via individual interviews; to claim awareness of anti-doping rules; and to perceive anti-doping compliance. Relative to gender, significant differences were observed for the types of DS reported; supplementation advisors; justifications for DS use; and awareness of anti-doping regulations. CONCLUSIONS: Utilization of this validated and reliable questionnaire has the potential for broad use and provides insight into the factors that influence DS use in elite athletes.

RESUMO

Leptin, a hormone made by adipocytes, is an important circulating signal for the regulation of body weight. A review of the scientific literature (PubMed Search 1994 to 2005) for studies examining the relationship among leptin, pediatric obesity and the impact of exercise intervention programmes on leptin concentrations are summarized. The potential utility of leptin as a biomarker for identifying children at risk of obesity is discussed. This literature review demonstrated that (1) leptin directly interacts with the hypothalamus for energy balance regulation; (2) the measurement of free, bound and total leptin as well as soluble leptin receptor concentration are critical for our understanding of obesity in children; and (3) leptin concentration may be an important factor for determining intervention programme responsiveness in pediatric obesity.
