Dietary supplementation of vitamin E (VitE) in a synthetic or natural form was examined. Forty-eight lambs were assigned (n = 16) to either a grain-based diet at moderate (MOD, 42 mg∙kg-1 VitE as all-rac α-tocopheryl acetate) or supranutritional (SUP, 285 mg∙kg-1 of vitE) levels of synthetic VitE or a lucerne hay-based diet (LUC; 37 mg∙kg-1 VitE) for 8 weeks. Meat from the LUC group had lower muscle n-6 and PUFA levels compared to meat from the MOD and SUP groups. Despite a similar VitE intake, muscle VitE was higher for LUC compared to MOD, while SUP lambs showed the highest VitE. Lipid oxidation did not differ between groups. For fresh meat, redness tended to be higher in LUC fed lambs than the other two groups, but brownness formation was only lower than the SUP group. For aged meat colour stability, redness tended to be higher in lambs fed SUP and LUC, whereas highest browning occurred in the MOD group.

Summary: Adolescents (Ad) constitute a difficult to manage population among individuals suffering from asthma. The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence, clinical characteristics and age of onset of allergic sensitization and clinical symptoms in a sample of atopic Ad living in the Campania region (Southern Italy). Sixteen Allergy units or Centers belonging to the Italian Association of Hospital and Territorial Allergologists (AAIITO, Campania region) participated in this cross-sectional study. A case report form (CRF) was specifically designed for this study and commercial allergen extracts used for screening SPTs were provided by ALK-Abelló Group (Milan, Italy). A total of 443 patients were examined (females, f 220, 49.6 %; males, m 223, 50.3%). Dust mites represent the most common sensitizing agents in allergic Ad living in Campania region (Dermatoph. pteronyssinus 67.4% and Dermatoph. farinae 66.5%), followed by Parietaria (58.9%), grasses (45.8%), Artemisia vulgaris (16.7%), Olea Europaea (32.2%), dog dander (17.1%), cat dander (20.0%), Alternaria alternata (8.1%), Cupressus sempervirens (4.9%), Betula pendula (4.7%), other allergens (19.4%). An interesting comparison has been made between clinical data of our Ad with data of elderly patients (E). The role of allergic sensitization is significantly higher in Ad compared to E. Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is the first sensitizing allergen in Ad and the last in E. Parietaria constitutes the first sensitizing pollen both in Ad and E, the percentage of sensitization is higher in Ad. Another important difference is the higher prevalence of As, as only symptom, in E compared to Ad (19.7% versus 7.6%). In conclusion, our findings confirm the high prevalence and clinical significance of airway allergic sensitization in the adolescents living in Campania region.

RESUMO

Metal oxide nanoparticles, hybridized with various polymeric chemicals, represent a novel and breakthrough application in drug delivery, hyperthermia treatment and imaging techniques. Radiolabeling of these nanoformulations can result in new and attractive dual-imaging agents as well as provide accurate in vivo information on their biodistribution profile. In this paper a comparison study has been made between two of the most promising hybrid core-shell nanosystems, bearing either magnetite (Fe3O4) or cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) cores, regarding their magnetic, radiolabeling, hyperthermic and biodistribution properties. While hyperthermic properties were found to be affected by the metal-core type, the radiolabeling ability and the in vivo fate of the nanoformulations seem to depend critically on the size and the shell composition.

The expression and distribution of the mRNA coding for galanin precursor, preprogalanin (ppGAL), were analysed in several rat hypothalamic nuclei (periventricular, paraventricular, supraoptic, dorsomedial and arcuate nuclei and the lateral hypothalamic area) during development by an in situ hybridization technique and computer-assisted grain counting over individual cells. ppGAL mRNA (expressed as number of grains/100 microns2) was detectable from postnatal day (PD) 1 in all the nuclei considered, and the amount of transcript per cell was 6-11 times less than in the adult. ppGAL mRNA progressively increased from PD8 to 14 to 21. The level of ppGAL mRNA in all the nuclei at PD21 was about half that in adulthood, except in the dorsomedial nucleus, where the difference was no more than 20%. As an index of the activity of galanin-containing neurons, we measured the basal and K(+)-evoked in vitro release of galanin-like immunoreactivity from hypothalamic slices of PD14, 21 and 90 rats by radioimmunoassay. Basal release of galanin-like immunoreactivity remained at the same level from PD14 to PD90, but the response to KCl (50 mM) stimulation was lower at PD14 (approximately 90%) and PD21 (> 200%) than at PD90 (350%). Basal and K(+)-evoked release was sensitive to tetrodotoxin, indicating a neuronal origin. This study provides the first evidence that the increase in ppGAL mRNA during the ontogeny of hypothalamic nuclei is associated with an increase in galaninergic neuronal function.
