RESUMO

This study was designed to investigate the effect of 630 ~ 650-nm red light on treating second-degree burns on lower limbs of glucocorticoid-dependent patients. Sixty-two glucocorticoid-dependent patients with the second-degree burns on lower limbs were divided into the control group (n = 25) and the observation group (n = 37) according to the treatment sequence and the patients' willingness. The patients in both groups were conventionally treated with 1% sulfadiazine silver cream dressing, with the only difference that the observation group received an additional 630-650-nm red light irradiation for 20 min before dressing. Each group was observed for 21 days, and observation ended if the wound healing was terminated. The wound healing rates, wound secretions, marginal response, and pain/itching levels were monitored and assessed. Compared with the control group, the observation group showed higher wound healing rate, fewer wound secretions, and more relief in marginal response. Clinical observation showed that 630-650-nm red light could effectively reduce wound purulent drainage/discharge, relieve the marginal response as well as pain, and promote wound healing.

BACKGROUND: Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM) is an herb used in Chinese medicine formulations for promoting blood circulation and minimizing vascular stasis. It has been successfully utilized in treating cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, thromboembolism, and angina. OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to study the effect of SM injections in autologous fat grafting to the breast. METHODS: Fifteen women who elected to undergo breast augmentation with autologous fat grafting were included in this study. Of these, 10 were given intravenous infusions of SM for 4 weeks perioperatively, and the remaining 5 did not receive herbal infusion. The increase in breast volume after fat grafting was measured in both the groups using a three-dimensional scanner. Breast tissue specimens were harvested just before the second fat injection procedure and were analyzed by the immunofluorescence staining test. RESULTS: All of the patients showed improvement in breast volume after fat grafting. The fat graft retention rate in the SM group was 60.06 ± 16.12%, whereas that in the non-SM group was 34.04 ± 11.15%. In addition, the SMG showed good breast morphology and absence of cyst formation. CONCLUSIONS: SM has the potential to increase the retention rate of fat grafts in breast augmentation.

OBJECTIVES: Therapeutic effect of many selectable methods applied in clinical practice for treating hypertrophic scar (HS) is not still so satisfactory. Meanwhile, a few medicines may lead to several undesirable complications. The traditional Chinese medicine, Rg3, has been reported for multiple antitumor effects previously. We have conducted series of animal experiments and confirmed the inhibitory effect of Rg3 in HS before. The aim of this study was to further verify the conclusions of previous studies and reveal the specific functional mechanisms of Rg3. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The HS specimens were obtained from the patients aged from 15 to 36 years without systemic diseases and the primary cultured cells were isolated from the scar tissue and expanded in vitro. In every experiment, hypertrophic scar fibroblasts (HSFs) were divided into three groups and respectively cultured in medium with or without different Rg3 concentrations (50, 100 µg/ml). Cell viability assay, flow cytometry analysis (FCM), quantitative PCR, cell migration assay, immunofluorescence staining, western blot and ELISA were employed. RESULTS: The outcomes demonstrated that Rg3 could suppress cell proliferation, vascularization and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition of HSFs in vitro by TGF-ß/SMAD and Erk signaling pathways. Significant statistical differences were between control group and Rg3-treated groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: This study provides sufficient in vitro evidences for Rg3 as a promising drug in the treatment of human HS.
