RESUMO

Orychophragmus violaceus (OV) and chicory (Cichorium intybus L., CC) can be used as fresh or dry forage for animals. To determine whether OV and/or CC have beneficial effects on performance and egg quality, a total of 1212 28-wk-old Beijing You Chicken (BYC) laying hens with similar performance were randomly allocated to 4 groups with 3 replicate pens per group, and 101 birds per pen. The birds were fed a basal diet (control), the basal diet + OV (3.507 kg/d/pen), the basal diet + CC (2.525 kg/d/pen), and the basal diet + OV + CC (OVC, 1.7535 kg/d/pen OV + 1.2625 kg/d/pen CC) for 3 wks after one wk of adaptation. The results showed that egg-laying rate was not affected by OV, CC and OVC (p > 0.05), but weekly average egg mass was significantly increased by OV and CC (p < 0.05). The feed egg ratio in the CC group (2.82) was significantly lower than that in the other three groups (p < 0.05). The eggshell thickness (EST), albumen height (AH) and Haugh unit (HU) were decreased by OV and CC (p < 0.05); while yolk color (YC) was increased in the CC and OVC groups (p < 0.05). Egg grade was decreased by OV (p < 0.05). Sensory evaluation showed that there was a trend for increased YC in OV, CC and OVC (p = 0.089). Serum total protein was significantly lower in OV group than those in the control and CC group (p < 0.05); serum albumin content was significantly decreased in OV, CC and OVC groups (p = 0.006). Serum glutathione peroxidase activity in CC and OVC groups was significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the present study suggests that CC had a better effect on the performance of the native laying hens than OV. The OV and CC affected egg quality, while YC was increased in CC and OVC groups. The OVC improved YC and serum antioxidative properties of native laying hens without affecting the performance.

RESUMO

Objective: To clarify the clinical efficacy of first-line oral antiviral drugs tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), and entecavir (ETV) in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and their safety profiles with lipid, bone, and kidney metabolism. Methods: 458 CHB cases diagnosed and treated at the Department of Hepatology of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University from February 2010 to November 2022 were selected. TAF (175 cases), TDF (124 cases), and ETV (159 cases) were used as therapies. At 24 and 48 weeks, the virology, biochemical response, changes in liver stiffness measurement (LSM), and bone, kidney, and blood lipid metabolism safety profiles were compared and analyzed. Results: After 24 and 48 weeks of TAF, TDF, and ETV therapy, HBV DNA load decreased by 3.28, 2.69, and 3.14 log10 IU/ml and 3.28, 2.83, and 3.65 log10 IU/ml, respectively, compared with the baseline, and the differences between the three groups were statistically significant, P < 0.001. The complete virological response rates were 73.95%, 66.09%, 67.19%, and 82.22%, 72.48%, and 70.49%, respectively. The incidence rates of low-level viremia were 16.67%, 21.70%, and 23.08%, while poor response rates were 1.11%, 3.67%, and 4.10%. ALT normalization rates were 64.00%, 63.89%, 67.96%, and 85.33%, 80.56%, 78.64%, respectively, and there was no statistically significant difference among the groups. LSM was significantly improved in patients treated with TAF for 48 weeks, P = 0.022. Serum phosphorus level gradually decreased with the prolongation of TDF treatment. The TAF treatment group had a good safety profile for kidney, bone, and phosphorus metabolism, with no dyslipidemia or related occurrences of risk. Conclusion: There are some differences in the therapeutic effects of first-line anti-HBV drugs. TAF has the lowest incidence of low-level viremia after 48 weeks of treatment and has a good safety profile in kidney, bone, and blood lipid metabolism.

RESUMO

This experiment aimed to study the effects of dietary calcium (Ca) and non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) levels on performance, serum biochemical indices, and lipid metabolism in Beijing You Chicken (BYC), a local chicken. A 3 × 3 factorial design was adopted, dietary Ca levels were 0.66, 0.71, and 0.76%, NPP levels were 0.25, 0.30, and 0.35%. A total of 648 ten-wk-old BYC growing pullets were randomly divided into 9 groups with 6 replicates per group, and 12 birds per replicate. Growth performance, serum biochemical indices, and lipid metabolism indicators from 10 to 16 wk were measured. The results showed as follows: 1) Dietary Ca and NPP alone did not affect growth performance, but the interaction of dietary Ca and NPP affected average feed intake (AFI) of growing pullets (P < 0.05). The AFI was the lowest for the group with 0.71% Ca and 0.25% NPP (3,550.0 g, P = 0.036). 2) Dietary Ca level significantly affected serum P content (P < 0.05); dietary NPP had an influence trend on serum Ca content (P= 0.054). Dietary NPP levels and the interaction of Ca and NPP significantly affected alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity. 3) Dietary Ca levels significantly affected TC content and HDL-C content (P < 0.05). Dietary NPP level significantly affected TG content (P < 0.05), the TG content in 0.25% and 0.30% NPP groups was significantly lower than that in 0.35% NPP group (P < 0.05). The interaction of dietary Ca and NPP significantly affected TG, TC and HDL-C contents (P < 0.05). TG, TC, and LDL-C levels were lower and HDL-C levels were the highest in the group with 0.66% Ca and 0.25% NPP. In summary, appropriate dietary Ca level can regulate serum TG, TC, and HDL-C content. Dietary Ca and NPP levels can be adjusted in pullet phase to avoid excessive obesity during the egg-laying period. This study recommended that dietary 0.66% Ca and 0.25% NPP benefit for the lipid metabolism of BYC growing pullets without affecting the performance.

RESUMO

Objective: To analyze the influencing factors of iron metabolism assessment in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome. Methods: MRI and/or DECT were used to detect liver and cardiac iron content in 181 patients with MDS, among whom, 41 received regular iron chelation therapy during two examinations. The adjusted ferritin (ASF) , erythropoietin (EPO) , cardiac function, liver transaminase, hepatitis antibody, and peripheral blood T cell polarization were detected and the results of myelofibrosis, splenomegaly, and cyclosporine were collected and comparative analyzed in patients. Results: We observed a positive correlation between liver iron concentration and ASF both in the MRI group and DECT groups (r=0.512 and 0.606, respectively, P<0.001) , only a weak correlation between the heart iron concentration and ASF in the MRI group (r=0.303, P<0.001) , and no significant correlation between cardiac iron concentration and ASF in the DECT group (r=0.231, P=0.053) . Moreover, transfusion dependence in liver and cardiac [MRI group was significantly associated with the concentration of iron in: LIC: (28.370±10.706) mg/g vs (7.593±3.508) mg/g, t=24.30, P<0.001; MIC: 1.81 vs 0.95, z=2.625, P<0.05; DECT group: liver VIC: (4.269±1.258) g/L vs (1.078±0.383) g/L, t=23.14, P<0.001: cardiac VIC: 1.69 vs 0.68, z=3.142, P<0.05]. The concentration of EPO in the severe iron overload group was significantly higher than that in the mild to moderate iron overload group and normal group (P<0.001) . Compared to the low-risk MDS group, the liver iron concentration in patients with MDS with cyclic sideroblasts (MDS-RS) was significantly elevated [DECT group: 3.80 (1.97, 5.51) g/L vs 1.66 (0.67, 2.94) g/L, P=0.004; MRI group: 13.7 (8.1,29.1) mg/g vs 11.6 (7.1,21.1) mg/g, P=0.032]. Factors including age, bone marrow fibrosis, splenomegaly, T cell polarization, use of cyclosporine A, liver aminotransferase, and hepatitis antibody positive had no obvious effect on iron metabolism. Conclusion: There was a positive correlation between liver iron concentration and ASF in patients with MDS, whereas there was no significant correlation between cardiac iron concentration and ASF. Iron metabolism was affected by transfusion dependence, EPO concentration, and RS.

RESUMO

The medicinal effects of Hericium erinaceus have been long documented in scientific studies of Eastern traditional medicine. It is widely consumed, because of its nutritional qualities and perceived health benefits. Also, it is rich in ß-glucans, which has been shown to have immunomodulating and antitumor effects. The objective of the present study was to investigate adverse effects, if any, of ß-glucan extract preparation from H. erinaceus in subchronic toxicity and genotoxicity studies. The conduct of these studies was in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and test guidelines established by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In the subchronic toxicity study, Sprague Dawley rats (12/sex/group) were administered (gavage) H. erinaceus ß-glucan extract preparation at dose levels of 0, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg body weight (bw)/day for 90 days. Treatment with H. erinaceus ß-glucan extract preparation did not result in any toxicologically significant treatment-related changes in clinical observations, ophthalmic examinations, body weights, body weight gains, feed consumption, and organ weights. Clinical pathology including hematology, serum chemistry, urinalysisand terminal necropsy (gross or histopathology findings) did not reveal any treatment-related adverse effects. The results of genotoxicity studies as evaluated by gene mutations in Salmonella typhimurium, in vitro chromosome aberrations and in vivo micronucleus test in mice did not reveal any genotoxicity of H. erinaceus ß-glucan extract preparation. Based on the subchronic study, the no observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) for H. erinaceus ß-glucan extract preparation was determined as 2000 mg/kg bw/day, the highest dose tested.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Occupational stress is a common issue faced by workers in every discipline. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies, such as aromatherapy massage or massage, have antistress effects in the literature. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial with triple blinds is to evaluate the immediate effects of lavender aromatherapy massage for improving work stress, burnout, and HRV parameters of female employees in a university. METHODS: A total of 53 subjects in experimental group whereas 57 subjects in control group completed interventions and measurement and led to power of 0.98. Inferential statistics, as independent t-test, paired t-test, and Chi-Square test, were performed to verify the expected relationships. RESULTS: The present study found that subjects in experimental group reported a lower role stress and less inclined to type A personality trait after aromatherapy massage with lavender. For control group, only less inclined to type A personality trait was reported after receiving massage. For burnout, a significant lower personal burnout and work-related burnout were reported after aromatherapy massage whereas only increased client-related burnout was reported in control group. For HRV, both the experimental and control groups reported higher SDNN and RMSSD in time domain after intervention. Contradictory HRT and PSI in time domain were significantly lower after intervention. In frequency domain of HRV, both groups reported significantly higher value in VLF and HF. In addition, the experimental group reported significantly higher value in TP and LF after intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Both the lavender aromatherapy massage and massage did show immediate effect on different dimensions of work stress, burnout, and HRV. These two interventions can be applied as routine leisure activities by personal preference to reduce stresses occurring in work environment.

RESUMO

Gold nanostars (AuNSs), with unique physicochemical properties, are thought to be a promising agent for photothermal therapy (PTT). In this study, we prepared PEGylated gold nanostars (pAuNSs) using the HEPES-reduction method. The high photothermal conversion efficiency (∼80%) and photothermal stability of pAuNSs were demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. 111In-DTPA-pAuNSs were prepared as a radioactive surrogate for the biodistribution studies of pAuNSs. In both microSPECT/CT images and the biodistribution study, the tumor-to-muscle (T/M) ratio reached a maximum at 24 h post intravenous injection of 111In-DTPA-pAuNSs. The high linear correlation between the 111In radioactivity and the gold content in the tumors (R2 0.86-0.99) indicated that 111In-DTPA-pAuNSs were appropriate for noninvasively tracking pAuNSs in vivo after systemic administration. Histological examination after silver enhancement staining clearly illustrated that the accumulated pAuNSs in the tumors were mainly located on the luminal surface of vessels. The mice bearing a SKOV-3 xenograft exhibited remarkable therapeutic efficacy with negligible organ damage after receiving pAuNS-mediated photothermal therapy. Our findings suggested that pAuNSs, together with their radioactive surrogate 111In-DTPA-pAuNSs, are promising for applications in image-guided photothermal therapy.

RESUMO

This study investigated the alterations of mineral metabolism in patients with Graves' disease (GD) who achieved euthyroidism. They had higher fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and phosphorus as compared with healthy subjects. Serum FGF23 was negatively correlated with serum phosphorus. These indicated abnormal mineral metabolism even after 1.6 years of euthyroid status. INTRODUCTION: FGF23 is involved in the mineral homeostasis, especially the regulation of serum phosphorus. Graves' disease (GD) is associated with accelerated bone turnover, hyperphosphatemia, and elevated serum FGF23. Evidence suggested that serum FGF23 decreased after a 3-month treatment of GD. However, it remains unclear whether serum FGF23, serum phosphorus, and other markers of mineral metabolism will be normalized after euthyroid status achieved. METHODS: A total of 62 patients with euthyroid GD and 62 healthy control subjects were enrolled, and the median duration of euthyroid status was 1.6 years. Endocrine profiles including thyroid function test, autoantibodies, serum FGF23, and bone turnover markers were obtained and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Euthyroid GD patients had significantly higher serum FGF23 and phosphorus, and lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels as compared with the control group. Serum FGF23 was significantly and negatively correlated with phosphorus level after adjusted for age, gender, calcium, iPTH, and 25(OH)D in the euthyroid GD group. CONCLUSION: Serum phosphorus and FGF23 levels remain higher in GD patients even after euthyroid status has been achieved for a median of 1.6 years. Serum FGF23 was negatively correlated with serum phosphorus in euthyroid GD patients. Underlying mechanisms warrant further investigations. RESUMO

Objectives: To analyze the cardiac T2* value, liver iron concentration (LIC) , and related laboratory parameters in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) with iron overload and evaluate the changes of organ functions after iron chelation therapy. To explore the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2* in making early diagnosis and assessing organs iron overload. Methods: Retrospective investigation was used to observe the cardiac T2* value, LIC, iron metabolism parameters and related laboratory parameters of 85 MDS patients from Nov 2014 to Jan 2018. Among them, 7 MDS patients with Low/Int-1 have received iron chelation therapy for 6 months during two MRI examinations. The above parameters were collected before and after iron chelation therapy for comparison. Results: Correlations were found between heart T2* value and age (rs=-0.290, P=0.007) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (rs=0.265, P=0.009) . There was a significant negative correlation between heart T2* value and blood transfusion units (rs=-0.701, P<0.001) . There was a significant positive correlation between LIC and serum ferritin (SF) (rs=0.577, P<0.001) . There was also a correlation between LIC and ALT (rs=0.268, P=0.014) and blood transfusion units (rs=0.244, P=0.034) . There was no correlation between heart T2* and pro-BNP, SF (all P>0.05) , and no correlation between LIC and age (P>0.05) . The increase of heart T2* between the normal and abnormal groups was statistically significant (P=0.005) , but the iron overload ratio of the heart T2*<20 ms was not significant between the two groups. There was statistical significance in the proportion of severe liver iron overload (LIC>15 mg/g DW) (P=0.045) . After iron chelation therapy, the values of SF, transferrin saturation, ALT, AST, pro-BNP and LIC of 7 patients were decreased compared with values before iron chelation therapy, and the peripheral blood cell level was increased. However, the changes of LVEF and T2* values after iron chelation were not obvious. Conclusion: MRI T2* may be a predictor of iron overload in patients with MDS in early stage, and may be more valuable compare with LVEF, SF and other laboratory indicators. The safety and repeatability of MRI cardiac T2* examination are recognized, and it can be used as an ideal detection for patients with iron overload.

RESUMO

Patient safety/quality improvement (PS/QI) is the cornerstone of 21st-century health care. Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is excited to provide a dedicated PS/QI primer. The overarching goal for this PS/QI series is to provide a comprehensive and practical resource that assists readers, authors, and peer reviewers in understanding PS/QI research, its unique methodology, and the associated reporting standards for trustworthy performance measures. The target audience includes resident and fellows, faculty from the private sector and academia, and allied health professionals. This inaugural primer reviews PS/QI background as it relates to otolaryngology practice. It explores the history, goals, and development of performance measurement. In addition, it highlights opportunities for integrating PS/QI into otolaryngology practice. Payers will drive patients to quality care based on outcomes. Otolaryngologists have a responsibility to embrace a culture of PS/QI. In doing so, we will define optimal, quality otolaryngology care through objective data and metrics.

RESUMO

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) could be highly selective and noninvasive, with low side effects as an adjuvant therapy for cancer treatment. Because excitation sources such as UV and visible lights for most of the photosensitizers do not penetrate deeply enough into biological tissues, PDT is useful only when the lesions are located within 10 mm below the skin. In addition, there is no prior example of theranostics capable of both PDT and imaging with a single deep-penetrating X-ray excitation source. Here we report a new theranostic scintillator nanoparticle (ScNP) composite in a core-shell-shell arrangement, that is, NaLuF4:Gd(35%),Eu(15%)@NaLuF4:Gd(40%)@NaLuF4:Gd(35%),Tb(15%), which is capable of being excited by a single X-ray radiation source to allow potentially deep tissue PDT and optical imaging with a low dark cytotoxicity and effective photocytotoxicity. With the X-ray excitation, the ScNPs can emit visible light at 543 nm (from Tb3+) to stimulate the loaded rose bengal (RB) photosensitizer and cause death of efficient MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cancer cells. The ScNPs can also emit light at 614 and 695 nm (from Eu3+) for luminescence imaging. The middle shell in the core-shell-shell ScNPs is unique to separate the Eu3+ in the core and the Tb3+ in the outer shell to prevent resonance quenching between them and to result in good PDT efficiency. Also, it was demonstrated that although the addition of a mesoporous SiO2 layer resulted in the transfer of 82.7% fluorescence resonance energy between Tb3+ and RB, the subsequent conversion of the energy from RB to generate 1O2 was hampered, although the loaded amount of the RB was almost twice that without the mSiO2 layer. A unique method to compare the wt % and mol % compositions calculated by using the morphological transmission electron microscope images and the inductively coupled plasma elemental analysis data of the core, core-shell, and core-shell-shell ScNPs is also introduced.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis, disrupted intestinal barrier and chronic inflammation. Given the high and increasing prevalence of obesity worldwide, anti-obesity treatments that are safe, effective and widely available would be beneficial. We examined whether the medicinal mushroom Antrodia cinnamomea may reduce obesity in mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD). METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a HFD for 8 weeks to induce obesity and chronic inflammation. The mice were treated with a water extract of A. cinnamomea (WEAC), and body weight, fat accumulation, inflammation markers, insulin sensitivity and the gut microbiota were monitored. RESULTS: After 8 weeks, the mean body weight of HFD-fed mice was 39.8±1.2 g compared with 35.8±1.3 g for the HFD+1% WEAC group, corresponding to a reduction of 4 g or 10% of body weight (P<0.0001). WEAC supplementation reduced fat accumulation and serum triglycerides in a statistically significant manner in HFD-fed mice. WEAC also reversed the effects of HFD on inflammation markers (interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α), insulin resistance and adipokine production (leptin and adiponectin). Notably, WEAC increased the expression of intestinal tight junctions (zonula occludens-1 and occludin) and antimicrobial proteins (Reg3g and lysozyme C) in the small intestine, leading to reduced blood endotoxemia. Finally, WEAC modulated the composition of the gut microbiota, reducing the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and increasing the level of Akkermansia muciniphila and other bacterial species associated with anti-inflammatory properties. CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with A. cinnamomea produces anti-obesogenic, anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic effects in HFD-fed mice by maintaining intestinal integrity and modulating the gut microbiota.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to investigate the use of a lentil protein isolate-based microcapsule design as a platform for entrapping different types of omega fatty acid-rich oil (e.g. canola, fish and flaxseed oils) and to characterise differences in the physical properties (e.g. moisture content, water activity, colour, wettability, particle size, surface oil and entrapment efficiency), storage stability and in vitro release behaviour of the entrapped oils. All microcapsules displayed similar physical properties regardless of the core material. Free fatty acid content, peroxide value, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and accelerated oxidation test were investigated between the free and encapsulated oils to determine protective effects from microencapsulation and found the wall material provided the greatest protective effect to the fish oils relative to the others. Based on an in vitro release assay, it was proposed that different intrinsic properties of fatty acids (e.g. polarity, conformation, chain length and number of double bonds) led to different release properties under simulated conditions. For instance, more encapsulated canola oil (∼8.9%) was released within simulated gastric fluid, whereas more encapsulated fish oil (∼73.4%) was released within simulated gastrointestinal fluids. Overall, the capsule design used in this study could be potentially used as a universal platform to deliver more healthy oils.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Large-scale studies of utilization of medical services among patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) are lacking. We aimed to investigate the usage of Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) among these patients in Taiwan. METHODS: We analyzed one million samples from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Patients (n = 1814) newly diagnosed with AD in 2001-2010 were divided into TCM users (n = 528) and non-TCM users (n = 1286). RESULTS: Compared with non-TCM users, TCM users were younger, had a higher female:male ratio and higher utilization rate of Western medicine. The median interval between diagnosis and the first TCM consultation was 7.92 months. Donepezil and rivastigmine were commonly prescribed medications. Chinese herbal medicine was the most popular treatment among TCM users. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed the specific usage patterns of TCM and non-TCM medical services among patients with AD. The information could be used for improving the healthcare of patients with AD.

RESUMO

Perceptual-motor performance in prolonged tennis matches may be affected by central fatigue. The purpose of this study was to investigate the supplementation of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), arginine, and citrulline on tennis-specific perceptual-motor performance after a simulated match. Nine male tennis players consumed 0.17 g/kg BCAA, 0.05 g/kg arginine, and 0.05 g/kg citrulline (AA trial), or placebo (PB trial) 1 h before the match. In the perceptual-motor performance test before and after the match, the subjects hit balls to the opposite direction of the examiner's movement. The AA trial showed significantly higher rate of correct direction than the PB trial after the match (AA trial: 93.63 ± 1.28%, PB trial: 69.09 ± 2.40%). The AA trial also demonstrated significantly higher post-match accuracy and consistency than the PB trial. The AA trial showed significantly lower heart rate and ratings of perceive exertion during the match, concurrently with a significantly lower plasma total tryptophan/BCAA ratio. Similar post-match plasma NH3 concentrations were found in both trials while the AA trial was significantly higher in NOx concentration. This study suggested that the supplementation could prevent the decline in perceptual-motor performance through alleviation of central fatigue by BCAA and prevention of excess hyperammonemia by arginine and citrulline.

RESUMO

The overall goal was to encapsulate canola oil using a mixture of lentil protein isolate and maltodextrin with/without lecithin and/or sodium alginate by spray drying. Initially, emulsion and microcapsule properties as a function of oil (20%-30%), protein (2%-8%) and maltodextrin concentration (9.5%-18%) were characterized by emulsion stability, droplet size, viscosity, surface oil and entrapment efficiency. Microcapsules with 20% oil, 2% protein and 18% maltodextrin were shown to have the highest entrapment efficiency, and selected for further re-design using different preparation conditions and wall ingredients (lentil protein isolate, maltodextrin, lecithin and/or sodium alginate). The combination of the lentil protein, maltodextrin and sodium alginate represented the best wall material to produce microcapsules with the highest entrapment efficiency (∼88%). The lentil protein-maltodextrin-alginate microcapsules showed better oxidative stability and had a stronger wall structure than the lentil protein-maltodextrin microcapsules.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: 2,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)furan monoacetate (BHMF-OAc) compound was isolated from the culture filtrate secreted by Streptomyces sp. CEN26, an endophytic actinomycete found in the root nodes of Centella asiatica (L.) Urban. The compound was purified using various chromatographic techniques and bioassay-guided fractionation. The compound was then identified through a structural characterization using (1) H, (13) C-NMR and MS analysis. After the purification and identification process, a series of experiments were conducted in order to test whether the compound affected conidial germination of Alternaria brassicicola. Findings show that the compound inhibited and deformed the conidial germination of A. brassicicola. Its minimal inhibitory concentrations of MIC90 and MIC50 were found to be 100 and 25 ppm respectively. Further experimentation show that the aforementioned concentrations of MIC90 and MIC50 completely suppressed the appressorium formation of the fungal pathogen. Therefore, the BHMF-OAc compound does have antifungal properties that help protect plants from infection by A. brassicicola. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Endophytic Streptomyces sp. CEN26 produces 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan monoacetate (BHMF-OAc), which is a compound that inhibits the infection process of Alternaria brassicicola in cabbage. Such an antifungal property would allow for the use of the BHMF-OAc as an alternative to chemical fungicides.
