RESUMO

To seek viable alternatives to antibiotics, we determined the combinatorial effects of Lactobacillus and a quorum quenching enzyme (QQE) on broiler growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune responses, and cecal microbial populations. In total, 360 one-day-old male broilers (Ross 308) were randomly allotted to 3 dietary treatments, with 12 replicate pens/treatment and 10 birds/replicate pen. Dietary treatments lasted 42 d and comprised: corn-soybean meal basal diet (control group, CON); control plus antibiotic growth promoter supplement group (AGP); and control plus Lactobacillus and QQE supplement group (LQ). Dietary LQ supplementation significantly increased final body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG) when compared with CON and AGP groups between 22 and 42 d and 1 to 42 d (P < 0.05). No significant differences were observed for serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels between treatments (P > 0.05). A higher concentration of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) was observed on d 42 in the LQ group (P = 0.06). Feeding LQ significantly increased serum immunoglobulins (IgA and IgG) levels when compared with other treatments (P < 0.05). A statistical trend was also observed for increased cecal butyrate levels (P = 0.06) in the LQ group. Bacterial α-diversity was unaffected by dietary treatments (P > 0.05). However, from principal component analysis (PCoA), the microbial community structure was different between the LQ and AGP groups. Diet supplemented with LQ significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the relative abundance of Synergistota and Proteobacteria and significantly (P < 0.05) increased the proportion of Ruminococcaceae and Faecalibacterium. Thus, supplemental LQ improved growth performance, immune status, and modulated intestinal microbial communities in broilers. We provide a new perceptive on antibiotic substitutes in the poultry industry.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of resveratrol on methanogenesis and microbial flora in Dorper × thin-tailed Han cross-bred ewes. In experiment 1, ten ewes (67.2 ± 2.24 kg BW) were assigned to two dietary treatments, a basal diet and a basal diet supplemented with resveratrol (0.25 g/head·day), to investigate the effect of resveratrol on nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance. In experiment 2, six ewes (64.0 ± 1.85 kg BW) with ruminal cannulae were assigned to the identical dietary treatments used in experiment 1 to investigate supplementary resveratrol on ruminal fermentation and microbial flora using qPCR. The results showed that supplementary resveratrol improved the digestibility of organic matter (OM; p < 0.001), nitrogen (N; p = 0.007), neutral detergent fibre (NDF; p < 0.001) and acid detergent fibre (ADF; p < 0.001). The excretion of faecal N was reduced (p = 0.007), whereas that of urinary N increased (p = 0.002), which led to an unchanged N retention (p = 0.157). Both CO2 and CH4 output scaled to digestible dry matter (DM) intake decreased from 602.5 to 518.7 (p = 0.039) and 68.2 to 56.6 (p < 0.001) respectively. Ruminal pH (p = 0.341), ammonia (p = 0.512) and total volatile fatty acid (VFA) (p = 0.249) were unaffected by resveratrol. The molar proportion of propionate increased from 13.1 to 17.5% (p < 0.001) while that of butyrate decreased from 11.0 to 9.55% (p < 0.001). The ratio of acetate to propionate (A/P) decreased from 5.44 to 3.96 (p < 0.001). Supplementary resveratrol increased ruminal population of Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus albus and Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens (p < 0.001) while decreased protozoa and methanogens. In conclusion, dietary resveratrol inhibited methanogenesis without adversely affecting ruminal fermentation.

This paper reports on comparative investigation of structure and luminescence properties of tetragonal LiYF(4) and BaYF(5), and hexagonal NaYF(4) phosphors codoped with Er(3+)/Yb(3+) by a facile hydrothermal synthesis. The products were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Intense visible emissions centered at around 525, 550 and 650 nm, originated from the transitions of (2)H(11/2) --> (4)I(15/2), (4)S(3/2) --> (4)I(15/2), and (4)F(9/2) --> (4)I(15/2) of Er(3+), respectively, have been observed in all the samples upon excitation with a 980 nm laser diode, and the involved mechanisms have been explained. Based on the green up-conversion emission performance, the Yb(3+) concentrations of Er(3+)/Yb(3+)-codoped LiYF(4), BaYF(5), and NaYF(4) phosphors have been optimized to be 10, 20, and 20 mol*%, respectively. The quadratic dependence of fluorescence on excitation laser power has confirmed that two-photon contribute to up-conversion of the green-red emissions.
